00:00:05.500 --> 00:00:12.099
Welcome to Joyfully Unstoppable, the podcast for women who are ready to succeed without the stress.
00:00:12.570 --> 00:00:20.710
Whether you lead a team, a classroom, a boardroom, or your own big, beautiful life, I am so glad you found us.
00:00:21.050 --> 00:00:26.929
I'm your host, Becky Hamm, executive coach, speaker, and founder of Women Lead Well.
00:00:27.469 --> 00:00:33.829
Join me each week for straight talk, practical tips, and a dash of encouragement.
00:00:34.530 --> 00:00:37.560
Hello, friend, I hope you are having a great day.
00:00:37.789 --> 00:00:45.100
Today, we're talking about an all-too-familiar experience for women leaders, self-doubt.
00:00:45.770 --> 00:00:52.090
And I wanna frame this by saying that you can be a confident person and experience self-doubt.
00:00:52.630 --> 00:00:57.240
You can have strong belief in your abilities and experience self-doubt.
00:00:57.929 --> 00:01:02.929
Self-doubt is just a very natural part of the human condition.
00:01:03.500 --> 00:01:43.441
And while you might wanna just push it away and power through, I would like to offer an alternative today on the podcast that can help you unlock your growth without all of that white-knuckling Self-doubt, especially with accomplished, amazing women who have a track record of success, self-doubt often comes up when the stakes are high, so when you feel like you've got something important to you on the line, when the path is unfamiliar, so if you're operating at a new level or in a new environment, if the future is uncertain, and like hello, what part of all of our futures is not uncertain right now?
00:01:43.941 --> 00:01:52.902
And so self-doubt comes up when things are changing, and as we are trying to orient ourselves with respect to that change.
00:01:53.402 --> 00:01:56.932
But here's what I'm gonna say today, coming back to self-doubt.
00:01:57.432 --> 00:02:07.031
Even in the midst of uncertainty and concern, you can move forward and be effective.
00:02:07.561 --> 00:02:13.391
Certainty and confidence are not conditions of success.
00:02:13.722 --> 00:02:16.102
And I'm gonna say that again because this is really important.
00:02:16.722 --> 00:02:19.502
Certainty is not a condition for success.
00:02:19.521 --> 00:02:28.722
You do not have to have complete information or complete certainty about the situation or the, or what you're doing or the, the outcome of a decision that you're gonna make.
00:02:29.081 --> 00:02:31.292
You can move forward in incomplete information.
00:02:31.532 --> 00:02:37.062
Certainty is not a requirement for success, and neither is confidence.
00:02:37.562 --> 00:02:45.062
Doing it scared is far more likely to bring you a positive result than waiting until you feel confident.
00:02:45.562 --> 00:02:51.641
Virtually every single time, 99.9% of the time, doing it scared will give you a better result.
00:02:52.141 --> 00:03:11.882
Certainty, confidence, not requirements, but the lack of certainty, the lack of confidence, big driver for self-doubt And I wanna spend a moment digging into why we are so likely to, um, be captured by self-doubt.
00:03:11.912 --> 00:03:12.752
I don't know how else to say it.
00:03:12.752 --> 00:03:13.701
There might be a better way.
00:03:13.711 --> 00:03:16.372
Shoot me a comment if you, um, have a better way to phrase that.
00:03:17.012 --> 00:03:17.382
But...
00:03:17.882 --> 00:03:20.181
And this is maybe particularly true for women.
00:03:20.181 --> 00:03:22.151
There might be a gendered element to this.
00:03:22.151 --> 00:03:24.532
I haven't seen any research on it, but it wouldn't surprise me.
00:03:25.032 --> 00:03:30.951
We can feel like we are being thorough and intentional.
00:03:30.951 --> 00:03:41.252
If we have doubts or uncertainty, that is a trigger or a sign to just do more research, just be a little more diligent, just dig a little bit deeper, look into it a little bit more, right?
00:03:41.252 --> 00:03:46.252
It looks like we are being thoughtful and careful and, um, responsible.
00:03:46.752 --> 00:03:50.461
And so when we have that self-doubt, we go looking for more information.
00:03:50.472 --> 00:04:01.872
We default to additional preparation, and how many of us prepare up the wazoo for every encounter we have, and how many of us attribute our success in our careers to careful preparation.
00:04:01.972 --> 00:04:07.842
So that self-doubt just feeds on habits and predispositions that we already possess.
00:04:08.342 --> 00:04:24.531
Self-doubt also gives us the sense that certainty and confidence are available to us, and so it's reassuring to think,"If I just spend a little more time preparing, if I just spend a little bit more time researching or looking for answers." But I wanna say this.
00:04:25.031 --> 00:04:25.552
You can...
00:04:25.562 --> 00:04:26.911
You should do your due diligence.
00:04:26.911 --> 00:04:30.021
Don't make big decisions, like, winging it completely.
00:04:30.521 --> 00:04:39.291
But more information is not necessarily gonna yield a better result, and statistically, we know it, it's not, it doesn't.
00:04:39.932 --> 00:04:43.122
Sometimes, maybe, but not as a rule.
00:04:43.622 --> 00:04:45.752
And I wanna say this, too, when it comes to self-doubt.
00:04:46.182 --> 00:04:47.572
Doubt is a feeling.
00:04:47.581 --> 00:04:48.901
It's an emotion.
00:04:49.262 --> 00:04:52.612
It is not a verdict on your actual readiness.
00:04:53.262 --> 00:04:59.072
It is real because you're feeling it, but it is not necessarily true.
00:04:59.711 --> 00:05:12.262
And this is a key takeaway from our episode today, so if you don't remember anything else, I want you to remember those two things, that confidence and certainty are not indicators of success, and feelings are real, but they are not necessarily true.
00:05:12.762 --> 00:05:15.891
And so let's dive into this a little bit more.
00:05:16.391 --> 00:05:22.262
So let's dive into this a little bit more I want you to stop treating uncertainty as evidence.
00:05:22.762 --> 00:05:25.502
Again, your feeling is real, but it's not necessarily true.
00:05:25.862 --> 00:05:27.812
How do you find the truth?
00:05:28.242 --> 00:05:31.502
Well, you wanna get curious with yourself and start asking some questions.
00:05:31.502 --> 00:05:34.432
You wanna ask,"What do I actually know?
00:05:34.461 --> 00:05:43.232
What do I have evidence to support?" You wanna separate the facts from the story you're telling yourself about those facts.
00:05:43.572 --> 00:05:44.961
And I've got a great download.
00:05:44.961 --> 00:06:10.112
It's a thought-catching journals prompt where when you're when you start to, like, spiral or, or loop on some negative thought, uh, it just gives you a series of questions to ask yourself to stop the spiral, get real clear on what is true, not just the reality of the feeling that you're feeling about something, but get clear and curious about the truth, and then make decisions on the basis of your truth.
00:06:10.612 --> 00:06:16.492
It could be applicable in this if you're dealing with self-doubt, and those, those doubts are looping in your brain, and you can't find a good way forward.
00:06:16.841 --> 00:06:20.081
So I'll link that in the show notes, and let me give you an example of this.
00:06:20.161 --> 00:06:31.391
For example, you might be thinking to yourself, you know, you've got a promotion, and this is your first time tackling a, a big project at this level.
00:06:31.391 --> 00:06:41.531
And you can say, like, there's the fact that you've never led a project this large, or you've never led a team this big, or you've never had a portfolio this complex.
00:06:41.961 --> 00:06:51.411
All of those might be facts But if you're telling yourself the story that I'm not qualified to lead it, well, that's a story.
00:06:51.911 --> 00:06:57.961
And you might have some feelings about that story you're telling yourself, but that story isn't necessarily a fact.
00:06:58.262 --> 00:06:59.531
It's your judgment.
00:07:00.211 --> 00:07:13.891
And so taking the time to peel that story back and look for evidence to confirm it, and essentially vitally important, looking for evidence to discredit it.
00:07:13.971 --> 00:07:15.672
So what is the alternative story?
00:07:15.672 --> 00:07:19.211
The alternative story is I am qualified to lead this project.
00:07:19.262 --> 00:07:21.322
I am qualified to lead this team.
00:07:21.802 --> 00:07:25.512
Well, what evidence can you assemble to prove that story correct?
00:07:26.012 --> 00:07:27.641
It's confirmation bias, right?
00:07:27.641 --> 00:07:32.461
When you go out and look for, for data or information, you're gonna find data or information to confirm the belief.
00:07:32.961 --> 00:07:38.831
And so give yourself those two opposing beliefs or those two opposing stories and go look for data.
00:07:39.331 --> 00:07:43.851
And then you can ask yourself objectively, and we'll talk in a minute about leaning on other people.
00:07:44.322 --> 00:07:50.132
Ask them objectively which set of facts, which set of data is most compelling.
00:07:50.632 --> 00:08:03.531
Is it the set of facts and data aligned with the belief that you're not qualified to lead the project or the team, or is the facts and set of data that's aligned with the story that you are, in fact, qualified to lead that project or that team?
00:08:04.031 --> 00:08:05.401
Let me give you another example.
00:08:05.721 --> 00:08:13.072
You're in a meeting and you make a recommendation, and somebody challenges that recommendation in front of your boss.
00:08:13.271 --> 00:08:23.281
So now it's not only that they've challenged you, but there's this dynamic of they're doing it in front of the person who writes your performance evaluation and is responsible for determining whether you get a year-end bonus.
00:08:23.661 --> 00:08:27.451
So the fact is somebody challenged your recommendation.
00:08:27.951 --> 00:08:36.562
The story you might tell yourself coming out of that meeting, Man, everybody thinks I'm incompetent," or,"The boss must not have confidence in me anymore.
00:08:36.572 --> 00:08:45.091
He lost confidence," or,"She lost confidence in me today because that happened." Those are stories, not necessarily facts.
00:08:45.552 --> 00:08:50.961
And so getting curious to ask yourself,"Well, what evidence would corroborate that story?
00:08:51.461 --> 00:09:07.192
What evidence would corroborate the alternative story that the boss has every confidence in me?" Or the story that that person who challenged me actually gave me some pretty good feedback that I'm gonna use to make this proposal stronger for the betterment of the organization.
00:09:07.192 --> 00:09:09.471
What facts would confirm that story?
00:09:09.971 --> 00:09:19.402
And so as a tool, again, download the thought-catching journal prompts and use that series of questions to help you when you find yourself in a moment like this.
00:09:19.902 --> 00:09:30.572
But as a bottom line, write down the evidence that supports your concern as well as the evidence that supports your capability, right?
00:09:30.572 --> 00:09:32.782
What's the belief or the story you're telling yourself?
00:09:33.142 --> 00:09:35.011
What is an alternative story?
00:09:35.282 --> 00:09:41.282
And go looking for evidence to support the different stories and, and compare them.
00:09:41.361 --> 00:09:42.581
Which one makes more sense?
00:09:42.591 --> 00:09:44.672
Which one has the preponderance of evidence?
00:09:45.172 --> 00:09:56.851
The next thing that can help when you are stuck in self-doubt is to get really crystal clear about the actual decision that you are facing first.
00:09:57.101 --> 00:10:01.772
This is like the eat the elephant one bite at a time scenario or recommendation.
00:10:02.272 --> 00:10:16.761
We can feel that self-doubt or that uncertainty because we see the entire picture, and it's big, and particularly in the context of uncertainty, like if a situation is changing and we can't like hammer it down, the whole thing can feel amorphous.
00:10:17.162 --> 00:10:34.542
But oftentimes, that actual next step, the next right step for you to take, is often a lot smaller than the whole, is often easier to get clarity around, and then you just take the next right step.
00:10:34.951 --> 00:10:39.402
And then once you've done that, okay, well, now what's the next right step after that?
00:10:39.841 --> 00:10:42.451
You're not solving the entire problem at once.
00:10:42.471 --> 00:10:45.572
You don't need clarity for the entire thing all at once.
00:10:45.912 --> 00:10:49.562
You're just looking to make the next decision.
00:10:50.062 --> 00:10:54.912
And so you wanna ask yourself, What is the decision in front of me today?
00:10:55.412 --> 00:11:04.892
Do I need to make that decision today or not?" Because it is always viable to delay a decision, unless it is urgent or emergent, right?
00:11:04.892 --> 00:11:07.501
Some decisions you do have to make on a particular timeline.
00:11:07.892 --> 00:11:09.822
But don't assume you have to make a decision today.
00:11:09.822 --> 00:11:13.062
You wanna ask the question,"What's that decision in front of me right now?
00:11:13.101 --> 00:11:14.552
Do I need to make it today?
00:11:15.052 --> 00:11:24.581
What information would materially improve the decision that I'm making?" Not what information would I like to have, what information would be nice to have.
00:11:24.912 --> 00:11:29.272
What information actually informs strong decision-making?
00:11:29.772 --> 00:11:31.371
Do I have that dec- information?
00:11:31.402 --> 00:11:32.841
Can I get that information?
00:11:33.381 --> 00:11:38.802
If I can't get that information, okay, well, what does that mean about the risk that I'm now taking by making a decision?
00:11:39.302 --> 00:11:43.272
And is it worth moving forward in light of that risk?
00:11:43.491 --> 00:11:46.951
Because frankly, a lot of times the answer is yes.
00:11:47.461 --> 00:12:05.062
Accepting the risk, making the decision, and moving forward and iterating or adjusting as necessary is oftentimes the better solution than waiting and losing momentum or losing potential advantage because you waited for too long, waiting for the situation to clarify.
00:12:05.552 --> 00:12:07.481
Again, each circumstance is different.
00:12:07.581 --> 00:12:12.701
My point is, you wanna get curious and not jump to the conclusion that you need to wait for all the information.
00:12:13.201 --> 00:12:18.292
You wanna ask yourself,"What can I learn only by moving forward?
00:12:18.792 --> 00:12:25.572
What am I not gonna know until I take this next step and make this decision?" What is the next action that is within my control?
00:12:25.642 --> 00:12:26.601
So what can I do?
00:12:26.611 --> 00:12:28.182
What's my actual decision space?
00:12:28.682 --> 00:12:36.211
And so ask yourself these questions, scratch at the assumptions that you're making or the stories that you're telling yourself.
00:12:36.711 --> 00:12:52.461
Where you can find important, meaningful information that improves the decision that you're making, get that information, and if it takes a little time, if the decision and the process can accommodate that, then okay, then take the time, then you're doing it for a good reason, right?
00:12:52.461 --> 00:12:53.511
You're not delaying.
00:12:53.851 --> 00:12:55.412
You are informing the decision.
00:12:55.912 --> 00:13:05.162
But you're also not dog paddling, just treading water, hoping the situation is gonna get clearer, information that isn't actually gonna improve the decision will fall from the sky.
00:13:05.662 --> 00:13:09.162
You rarely need enough confidence, right?
00:13:09.211 --> 00:13:13.192
I've said confidence does not affect or improve outcomes.
00:13:13.692 --> 00:13:21.621
You just need to see the decision that is right in front of you and make that decision, and that will then move you forward.
00:13:21.621 --> 00:13:57.831
You'll have different clarity on your next decision And when you're in the moment facing that choice, whatever it is, if you still feel uncertain about that choice, step back from the particulars of that decision and look at your track record and ask yourself, What have I handled before that can prepare me for this?" And that might be substantive, you might have dealt with a similar issue, Or it might just be that you have been in a situation of uncertainty before, made decisions with incomplete information, and figured out how to move forward and continue to make progress.
00:13:58.091 --> 00:14:07.871
So it could be that you have gone through this process before under different circumstances, but you kinda know how to make decisions effectively in uncertainty.
00:14:08.371 --> 00:14:13.022
Ask yourself, when have you figured something out, right?
00:14:13.072 --> 00:14:14.121
I love Marie Forleo.
00:14:14.152 --> 00:14:15.042
We've talked about her before.
00:14:15.062 --> 00:14:16.371
Everything is figureoutable.
00:14:16.761 --> 00:14:21.231
When have you figured something out before in a situation of incomplete information?
00:14:21.731 --> 00:14:24.701
And then I love this question'cause it gets you out of your own head.
00:14:25.142 --> 00:14:29.871
What would somebody who trusts my judgment say that I'm overlooking?
00:14:30.371 --> 00:14:34.072
And if the answer is,"Well, nothing," well then there you go.
00:14:34.192 --> 00:14:37.001
Then you know that it is time to move forward.
00:14:37.501 --> 00:14:46.011
And speaking of thinking of someone who trusts you, it's so important to remember that you never have to do this alone.
00:14:46.511 --> 00:14:51.022
And so think of your mentors, people who know you well.
00:14:51.022 --> 00:14:53.201
It could be professional, it could be personal.
00:14:53.471 --> 00:15:02.152
If you're inside the Women's Executive Leadership Lab, you have a beautiful cohort of women who can serve as the sounding board, kind of an informal board of advisors.
00:15:02.451 --> 00:15:13.951
But when that self-doubt kicks in, and again, it will, it is just a human thing, talk with someone who can help you think clearly, but who isn't gonna take the decision away from you.
00:15:14.192 --> 00:15:19.792
And so you might talk with your boss, but if they're gonna get grabby-grabby and try to solve it for you, I would say don't actually talk to your boss.
00:15:20.182 --> 00:15:23.951
At this point, go to them later as you're briefing the decision that you've made.
00:15:24.631 --> 00:15:32.871
But at this point, go to somebody whose judgment you trust and ask them that question that I just told you to reflect on.
00:15:32.871 --> 00:15:35.981
Like, help me identify what I might be missing, what am I overlooking?
00:15:36.481 --> 00:15:39.971
Challenge my assumptions behind my recommendation.
00:15:39.971 --> 00:15:45.672
This is the decision that's in front of me now, this is how I'm thinking about it, what am I missing?
00:15:45.782 --> 00:15:51.562
Challenge my assumptions, challenge this decision, and then, like, do you think I can do this?
00:15:52.062 --> 00:15:57.631
Let them remind you of the times when they've seen you tackle uncertainty and be effective.
00:15:58.131 --> 00:16:02.412
And all of that is just reassuring, right?
00:16:02.451 --> 00:16:13.381
It helps provide a little bit of a reminder of who you are and what you're capable of because that self-doubt, that is just a survival instinct.
00:16:13.381 --> 00:16:17.731
Again, that is just your brain trying to keep you safe by keeping you small, happens to everyone.
00:16:18.231 --> 00:16:24.341
But it feels, it, it feels really powerful when it's happening to us in the moment.
00:16:24.662 --> 00:16:44.721
And so bringing other people in, other women in, who know you and respect you and value what you have to offer, they can help reframe the way you're looking at the situation and help make that feeling of self-doubt a little bit smaller'cause they're putting it into context.
00:16:45.101 --> 00:16:57.802
I want you to do it for yourself, but having someone do that for you is also incredibly powerful And then the last thing that I'm gonna say, and you've heard me say it before, confidence is the result of action.
00:16:57.802 --> 00:16:59.361
It's not the precursor to action.
00:16:59.381 --> 00:17:02.322
And again, confidence is not an indicator of success.
00:17:02.892 --> 00:17:06.082
It just, it, it is a feeling like any other feeling.
00:17:06.432 --> 00:17:09.382
Feelings are real, they are not necessarily true.
00:17:09.842 --> 00:17:12.402
So you've done all of this.
00:17:12.711 --> 00:17:16.221
You have gotten the information that actually informs a strong decision.
00:17:16.231 --> 00:17:21.372
You have scoped that decision down to the one that's right in front of you, like your, your next right step.
00:17:21.791 --> 00:17:23.561
You have thought through the implications.
00:17:23.571 --> 00:17:29.311
You have brought in your trusted board of advisors, and I'm gonna tell you to act.
00:17:29.511 --> 00:17:30.761
Do the thing.
00:17:30.821 --> 00:17:31.582
Don't wait.
00:17:32.082 --> 00:17:33.432
Don't wait till you feel ready.
00:17:33.932 --> 00:17:34.511
Just do it.
00:17:34.521 --> 00:17:35.832
Do it scared.
00:17:36.332 --> 00:17:44.981
And trust me, I walked away from a high-paying, very stable job to launch an executive coaching company.
00:17:45.362 --> 00:17:56.662
I know a thing or two about doing it scared, and I know it's a sh- it's a cheap, easy thing for me to say, but I have walked the walk, and I am telling you, do it scared.
00:17:57.162 --> 00:17:58.051
Do it.
00:17:58.301 --> 00:18:03.751
Get out there, get the reps in, make the decisions, take the action.
00:18:04.071 --> 00:18:07.192
It's gonna work the way you thought it would or it's not.
00:18:07.451 --> 00:18:10.821
Even if it doesn't, that is not the end of the world.
00:18:10.902 --> 00:18:17.372
That just brings you to a new decision about how to move forward from this other place, which isn't the place you wanted to be.
00:18:17.872 --> 00:18:19.231
Okay, fine.
00:18:19.412 --> 00:18:21.451
You can move forward from that place.
00:18:21.951 --> 00:18:27.471
But you never make forward motion if you never take action.
00:18:27.971 --> 00:18:32.061
Do not waste time waiting for certainty that is not gonna come.
00:18:32.741 --> 00:18:41.501
Do not waste your career or your life waiting for confidence that will only come on the other side of action.
00:18:42.001 --> 00:18:43.811
Do the thing.
00:18:44.311 --> 00:18:53.332
And hey, look, if it is still too much for you to do the thing, if you're listening and you're like,"Yeah, I, yeah, I know she's right, but eh," then always reach out, DM me.
00:18:53.770 --> 00:18:56.817
I'm@womenleadwell Across all platforms.
00:18:57.317 --> 00:19:03.397
I would love to gift you a 60-minute coaching call, no strings, no obligations.
00:19:03.488 --> 00:19:14.288
Let's talk it out, and let's see if we can't bring you to a place where you feel committed to taking that next step, even if you don't feel ready.
00:19:14.788 --> 00:19:16.097
So- That's it.
00:19:16.597 --> 00:19:17.847
That's what I've got for you.
00:19:18.347 --> 00:19:22.127
Share your recommendation, even if it scares you to speak in the meeting.
00:19:22.647 --> 00:19:25.768
Submit the application for that new job you want.
00:19:26.067 --> 00:19:28.478
Talk to your boss about that promotion.
00:19:28.847 --> 00:19:33.948
Ask the difficult question that you think is key for that project or that program to succeed.
00:19:34.458 --> 00:19:38.218
Make the dang decision, and then implement it.
00:19:38.817 --> 00:19:40.317
Schedule the conversation.
00:19:40.817 --> 00:19:41.748
Speak your truth.
00:19:42.248 --> 00:19:44.518
You can do it.
00:19:44.817 --> 00:19:48.087
Self-doubt is not an indicator to slow down or stop.
00:19:48.587 --> 00:19:51.637
Self-doubt is just an indicator that you're a human.
00:19:52.137 --> 00:19:52.907
That's all it is.
00:19:53.607 --> 00:19:56.708
It's just your brain trying to keep you safe by keeping you small.
00:19:57.377 --> 00:19:58.557
The feeling is real.
00:19:59.018 --> 00:20:02.387
It is not necessarily true.
00:20:02.887 --> 00:20:06.807
You can find the truth about your circumstance and find your next best step.
00:20:07.448 --> 00:20:11.188
Take that step, and then take the next one after that.
00:20:11.688 --> 00:20:15.188
So the next time self-doubt appears, I want you to remember those four steps.
00:20:15.188 --> 00:20:25.278
You wanna check the facts, separate the evidence from the interpretation or the facts from the feelings, narrow the decision down to what is sitting right in front of you, what you need to do now.
00:20:25.407 --> 00:20:27.238
Remember your evidence.
00:20:27.367 --> 00:20:29.978
Draw on what your experience has already taught you.
00:20:30.607 --> 00:20:31.847
I guess they're five steps.
00:20:32.307 --> 00:20:34.417
Bring in your board of advisors.
00:20:34.758 --> 00:20:42.347
Figure it out for yourself, and then validate or stress-test it with people who you trust, who trust you, and then do the thing.
00:20:42.607 --> 00:20:44.178
Take the action.
00:20:44.678 --> 00:20:47.278
And then let that information guide your next step.
00:20:47.778 --> 00:20:52.067
Now, if this episode spoke to you, I would love for you to share it with a friend.
00:20:52.387 --> 00:20:55.857
We need more women leading from alignment, not adrenaline.
00:20:56.448 --> 00:21:01.508
And if you haven't already, please make sure to like and subscribe so you don't miss next week's drop.
00:21:01.827 --> 00:21:05.627
It really helps my podcast find its way to other women who would enjoy it.

00:21:15.178 --> 00:21:20.907
Until next time, I'm Becky Hamm, and this is Joyfully Unstoppable.
