ABOUT THIS EPISODE
Text if you need me? Prayer or just need encouragement…
Some of the most loving words you’ll ever hear are the ones you don’t want to hear. We’re back with Episode 111 of Jessi Morgan Devotions for the Christian Heart, and Friendship Series Part 3 focuses on Christian accountability: the friends who care enough to tell you the truth with love, not heat.
We start with a real-life moment where a “joke” on social media didn’t land like it was intended, and how a close friendship was repaired through an honest conversation, careful tone, and genuine repentance. It’s a reminder that what looks like “just social media” is often someone’s business, ministry, calling, and livelihood.
Then we turn to Scripture for a powerful model of biblical friendship: Nathan confronting King David after David’s sin with Bathsheba and the cover-up that followed.
If you’ve been praying for deeper Christian friendships, this devotional will help you look for “Nathan friends” and build community through church and Bible study. Subscribe for weekly Christian devotionals, share this with a friend who needs it, and leave a review to help more listeners find the show.

00:00:00.160 --> 00:00:00.880
Hello, hello.
00:00:00.959 --> 00:00:05.120
You're listening to the Jesse Morgan Devotions for the Christian Heart Podcast episode 111.
00:00:05.200 --> 00:00:09.679
This week's devotional is titled The Friendship Series Part 3: Holding You Accountable.
00:00:09.839 --> 00:00:12.320
The Friends Who Love You Enough to Tell You the Truth.
00:00:12.560 --> 00:00:13.519
Let's go.
00:00:14.640 --> 00:00:16.079
Hi, I'm Jesse Morgan.
00:00:16.239 --> 00:00:22.079
I used to just share home decor and renovation tips on social media, but now I'm sharing something even closer to my heart.
00:00:22.239 --> 00:00:24.719
My journey in love for Jesus Christ, my Savior.
00:00:24.960 --> 00:00:28.719
Welcome to the Jesse Morgan Devotions for the Christian Hawk Podcast.
00:00:28.879 --> 00:00:35.119
This is a weekly devotional I started back in May 2024, but the inspiration for it came much earlier.
00:00:35.359 --> 00:00:40.719
It was rooted in a faith journey that began when my daughter was born four months early in 2023.
00:00:40.880 --> 00:00:44.479
Through that challenging time, God worked in ways that truly amazed me.
00:00:44.719 --> 00:00:54.320
On this podcast, I share personal stories of faith woven together with Scripture to show just how incredible God's word can be in our everyday lives.
00:00:54.560 --> 00:01:02.240
My hope is that through these stories, you'll be encouraged, uplifted, and reminded of God's love and presence, no matter what you're going through.
00:01:02.399 --> 00:01:08.640
So I invite you to spend less than 15 minutes with me each week as we reflect on these devotionals together.
00:01:08.879 --> 00:01:10.640
Let's all pray within.
00:01:11.840 --> 00:01:17.120
Holding you accountable, the friends who love you enough to tell you the truth.
00:01:17.359 --> 00:01:19.280
Hello, and welcome back to the podcast.
00:01:19.439 --> 00:01:20.799
I'm so excited to be back.
00:01:21.040 --> 00:01:32.640
Took a nice break for like a month or so, and I'm just so blessed that God has allowed me to keep sharing stories and encouraging others within the name of Jesus.
00:01:32.719 --> 00:01:36.640
So thank you for being here and supporting me, and welcome back to the podcast.
00:01:36.879 --> 00:01:38.319
So let's start.
00:01:38.560 --> 00:01:44.239
Like I said, this episode is about friends who love you enough to tell you the truth.
00:01:44.799 --> 00:01:50.400
One of the greatest gifts God can place in your life, I feel, isn't just a friend who encourages you.
00:01:50.560 --> 00:01:54.000
It's a friend who loves you enough to tell you the truth.
00:01:54.159 --> 00:01:55.120
Let's be honest.
00:01:55.280 --> 00:01:59.519
We all love people who cheer us on, celebrate our victories, and support our dreams.
00:01:59.760 --> 00:02:06.400
But one of the greatest acts of love is having the courage to say, I need to tell you something because I care about you.
00:02:06.719 --> 00:02:11.919
Real friendship isn't built on avoiding uncomfortable conversations.
00:02:12.080 --> 00:02:13.360
It's built on trust.
00:02:13.520 --> 00:02:16.879
And trust grows when honesty is spoken with love.
00:02:17.280 --> 00:02:24.319
One of the things I appreciate most about my close, um, the closest friendships in my life is the transparency.
00:02:24.639 --> 00:02:30.240
We give each other honest opinions, but we also care about how we communicate them.
00:02:30.560 --> 00:02:35.280
Because of that, we avoid serious conversations over text whenever possible.
00:02:35.520 --> 00:02:38.240
Messages can easily be misread that way.
00:02:38.479 --> 00:02:43.039
Instead, we pick up the phone, we send a voice note, or meet in person.
00:02:43.360 --> 00:02:51.439
I actually love voice notes because you can hear compassion, concern, even hurt in someone's faces.
00:02:51.680 --> 00:02:53.439
Tone matters.
00:02:54.000 --> 00:03:00.319
I really believe it's one of the reasons my friendships have grown stronger over the years.
00:03:00.560 --> 00:03:09.840
Um, I remember making a huge mistake one time with one of my closest friends who has built an incredible business through social media.
00:03:10.159 --> 00:03:16.400
I made a comment that I intended as a joke on her page, and she didn't receive it that way.
00:03:16.639 --> 00:03:18.400
Neither did her audience.
00:03:18.639 --> 00:03:21.759
At first, I honestly didn't understand why she was hurt.
00:03:22.000 --> 00:03:23.599
For a while, we barely spoke.
00:03:23.840 --> 00:03:30.080
Looking back, I'm actually grateful she didn't call me an anger or react out of emotion.
00:03:30.240 --> 00:03:34.879
She gave herself time to process what happened before we even had a conversation.
00:03:35.120 --> 00:03:39.199
When we finally talked, she explained it in a way that I could understand.
00:03:39.599 --> 00:03:45.680
She asked me to imagine someone publicly criticizing my home decor page or my podcast.
00:03:46.000 --> 00:03:48.879
The work I've poured my heart into building.
00:03:49.120 --> 00:03:51.280
That moment she shared that it clicked.
00:03:51.439 --> 00:03:53.039
I finally understood.
00:03:53.360 --> 00:04:04.319
What I had dismissed as a joke and actually minimizing years of hard work, sacrifice, consistency, and the business she had built, I just felt terrible.
00:04:04.560 --> 00:04:06.319
I apologize sincerely.
00:04:06.560 --> 00:04:08.159
We worked through it together.
00:04:08.400 --> 00:04:14.719
Looking back now, what I'm most thankful for isn't simply that she forgave me.
00:04:14.960 --> 00:04:19.680
It's that she loved me enough to tell me the truth, regardless if it hurt or not.
00:04:20.000 --> 00:04:22.319
She could have quietly ended the friendship.
00:04:22.560 --> 00:04:24.959
She could have allowed resentment to grow.
00:04:25.199 --> 00:04:30.639
Instead, she invited me, you know, into a conversation that changed me for the better.
00:04:30.959 --> 00:04:33.199
I'll never make that mistake again.
00:04:33.439 --> 00:04:36.240
Not with her, but or with anyone.
00:04:37.680 --> 00:04:43.199
Today, I have tremendous respect for what my best friend has built.
00:04:43.360 --> 00:04:55.040
Watching her platform continue to grow reminds me that what some people dismiss as just social media is often someone's business, their ministry, calling, or livelihood.
00:04:55.279 --> 00:04:57.920
Her honesty made me better as a friend.
00:04:58.160 --> 00:05:02.560
As I reflected on that experience too, um, I realized something.
00:05:02.879 --> 00:05:07.360
My friend reminded me of someone in scripture, Nathan.
00:05:07.759 --> 00:05:08.560
Interesting, right?
00:05:08.639 --> 00:05:12.480
You would have thought I would have picked somebody a little bit more famous from the Bible, but Nathan.
00:05:12.639 --> 00:05:23.120
Some people wouldn't describe Nathan and David as friends because Nathan was God's prophet, and King David, as we all know, was Israel's chosen king by God.
00:05:23.920 --> 00:05:25.600
But I see something deeper.
00:05:25.839 --> 00:05:32.959
They loved the same God, they respected one another, and Nathan cared too much about David to stay silent.
00:05:33.360 --> 00:05:35.920
To understand this story, we need a little context.
00:05:36.160 --> 00:05:43.120
David was an incredible king who normally went to battle alongside his soldiers, but one season he stayed home.
00:05:43.920 --> 00:05:46.160
This story is probably sounding a little more familiar.
00:05:46.480 --> 00:05:57.279
Instead, he so basically one season he stayed home from battle with his men, and instead of being where God had called him to be, he was missing an action.
00:05:57.680 --> 00:05:59.519
That's when temptation entered.
00:05:59.759 --> 00:06:05.680
David saw Bathsheba bathing, sent for her, and committed adultery with her, as we all know this story.
00:06:05.920 --> 00:06:12.319
When she became pregnant, David tried to cover up his sin by bringing her husband Uriah home from battle.
00:06:12.480 --> 00:06:16.720
So everyone would assume the baby was his, because he would have gone home to his wife.
00:06:16.879 --> 00:06:22.240
But Uriah refused because his fellow soldiers were still risking their lives.
00:06:22.319 --> 00:06:28.000
So he felt like, how can I go home and see my wife and lay with my wife in a time like this?
00:06:28.560 --> 00:06:32.480
So David did the unthinkable because he was desperate to cover this up.
00:06:32.560 --> 00:06:37.360
He ordered Uriah to be brought to the front line of battle where he was killed.
00:06:37.680 --> 00:06:40.240
Afterward, David took Bathsheba as his wife.
00:06:40.399 --> 00:06:41.839
No one confronted him.
00:06:42.079 --> 00:06:44.720
After all, he was the king.
00:06:44.959 --> 00:06:46.879
But God saw everything.
00:06:47.199 --> 00:06:48.879
So God sent Nathan.
00:06:49.360 --> 00:06:53.680
I often wondered how God instructed Nathan to confront David.
00:06:53.920 --> 00:06:59.600
Um, God did tell Nathan what to say, but I always think about the delivery.
00:06:59.680 --> 00:07:01.439
Like, how did Nathan do this?
00:07:01.519 --> 00:07:04.800
You know, did he kind of do this on his own the way he thought best?
00:07:05.120 --> 00:07:06.879
Because he thought a lot of David.
00:07:07.920 --> 00:07:16.079
So either way, David either way, you know, Nathan didn't walk into the palace just pointing fingers when he confronted David.
00:07:16.240 --> 00:07:20.639
He didn't shame David in front of everyone, he didn't embarrass him publicly.
00:07:21.040 --> 00:07:24.720
Instead, Nathan told David a story.
00:07:25.040 --> 00:07:31.199
A rich man stole the the only little lamb belonging to a poor man.
00:07:31.519 --> 00:07:32.959
He told the story to David.
00:07:33.120 --> 00:07:34.399
David was furious.
00:07:34.639 --> 00:07:37.519
He declared that the rich man deserved punishment.
00:07:37.759 --> 00:07:44.560
Then Nathan directly looked at him and spoke one of the most powerful sentences to me in all of scripture.
00:07:44.800 --> 00:07:46.000
You are that man.
00:07:47.040 --> 00:07:48.319
You are the man.
00:07:48.800 --> 00:07:50.160
Nathan knew David.
00:07:50.399 --> 00:07:51.600
He knew David's heart.
00:07:51.680 --> 00:07:53.839
He knew David responded to stories.
00:07:54.079 --> 00:08:00.160
Rather than attacking him, Nathan helped David see for himself what he had become.
00:08:00.560 --> 00:08:02.240
That moment changed everything.
00:08:02.560 --> 00:08:06.639
David immediately confessed his sin and repented before God.
00:08:07.040 --> 00:08:10.639
Nathan's goal wasn't humiliation, neither was God's.
00:08:10.800 --> 00:08:12.319
It was restoration.
00:08:12.720 --> 00:08:21.040
And that's what real accountability looks like in friendship, looks like in companionship, looks like in relationships.
00:08:21.279 --> 00:08:24.720
Even after David's failure, Nathan didn't abandon him.
00:08:25.759 --> 00:08:40.879
Years, years later, if you look into scripture and towards the end of David's reign, Nathan continued serving David faithfully and even helped ensure that Solomon became king according to God's promise, which was David's son.
00:08:41.440 --> 00:08:44.080
Nathan never stopped caring about David.
00:08:44.320 --> 00:08:50.399
He loved him enough to tell him the truth, to confront him the way he did, even though he was king.
00:08:50.639 --> 00:08:53.919
And I think that's the lesson God wants us to remember.
00:08:54.240 --> 00:08:58.240
Accountability isn't about proving something, someone wrong.
00:08:58.399 --> 00:09:02.399
It's about loving them enough to help them see the truth.
00:09:03.120 --> 00:09:10.240
My friend knew how to reach my heart, and Nathan and God knew how to reach David's.
00:09:10.559 --> 00:09:17.840
Neither conversation was rooted in anger, but both were rooted in love and accountability.
00:09:18.399 --> 00:09:21.919
Real friends don't ignore hard conversations.
00:09:22.159 --> 00:09:25.519
Real friends don't use truth as a weapon.
00:09:25.919 --> 00:09:34.799
Real friends speak truth with wisdom, humility, and compassion because their goal isn't to win the argument.
00:09:35.279 --> 00:09:36.879
I know I hit a nerve there.
00:09:37.200 --> 00:09:39.440
Their goal is restoration.
00:09:40.000 --> 00:09:42.639
So today I want to leave you with this thought.
00:09:43.360 --> 00:09:46.080
Don't just pray for friends who encourage you.
00:09:46.399 --> 00:09:48.399
Pray for Nathan friends.
00:09:48.720 --> 00:09:59.840
Friends who love you enough to tell you the truth, friends who refuse to let you settle for less than God's best, friends who will lovingly point you back to Christ whenever you lose your way.
00:10:00.480 --> 00:10:07.600
Because those friendships don't just make life richer, they make us more like Jesus Christ.
00:10:08.399 --> 00:10:18.799
So my other question for you today is when you sit back and you look at the friendships that you have, because God wants us to have friends, wants us to have companionship in this world.
00:10:18.960 --> 00:10:25.679
So when you sit back and you look at the friendships around you, do you feel like those friends are there to really tell you the truth?
00:10:26.000 --> 00:10:33.360
Do you feel like those friends are there to see you get through something hard and they're cheering for you on the other side?
00:10:34.879 --> 00:10:44.320
If you can't answer that question, that might be something that you need to pray about with the Lord and ask God for friends.
00:10:44.720 --> 00:10:51.440
I would say I was a person for the past couple of years, I have wonderful friends.
00:10:52.000 --> 00:10:57.679
And a lot of my friends, like I said, we are we're very transparent, we we really tell each other what we think.
00:10:57.919 --> 00:11:00.159
But the hardest thing for me is distance.
00:11:00.799 --> 00:11:03.120
Some of my closest friends don't live here.
00:11:03.840 --> 00:11:22.960
And um, and I have in the last year have gone through some things recently with just people that you know were friends and thought I thought I was like good friends with them and all that, and and I had to sit back and reflect and be like, Lord, I want local friends, I want people that I can rely on.
00:11:23.120 --> 00:11:29.759
I want to have those relationships, you know, in a closer proximity than just you know, out of state.
00:11:30.080 --> 00:11:36.159
And the best thing I ever did was was really getting into church, joining a Bible study.
00:11:36.399 --> 00:11:38.000
That's the best thing I ever did.
00:11:38.240 --> 00:11:52.559
And it it was a year ago I made that decision, and I'm so thankful for it because I have been through some things recently within my family and my life, and my Bible study group, those women have been such a rock for me.
00:11:52.720 --> 00:11:56.159
I can literally get in our text chat, write up something.
00:11:56.320 --> 00:12:00.240
Hey, I need help, I need this, I need just guidance or just pray for me.
00:12:00.320 --> 00:12:07.840
And they always respond, someone answers, someone helps you, and I hope that I can do I can be the same way for them.
00:12:08.159 --> 00:12:10.240
And I'm so thankful for that.
00:12:10.639 --> 00:12:18.399
And they hold you accountable, they love you, they want what's best for you, and that's the type of friendships that we need in life.
00:12:18.559 --> 00:12:23.600
So if you cannot really sit back and think, do I have a Nathan in my life?
00:12:24.080 --> 00:12:30.720
Maybe it's time to seek that out and have God lead you to your Nathan friend.
00:12:30.879 --> 00:12:32.320
Because there's nothing like that.
00:12:32.480 --> 00:12:35.039
There's nothing so special as a friend like that.
00:12:35.279 --> 00:12:36.240
Let's pray.
00:12:36.480 --> 00:12:39.279
Heavenly Father, I thank you so much for Nathan.
00:12:39.519 --> 00:12:41.440
Thank you for the Nathan friend, Father.
00:12:41.600 --> 00:12:48.879
Thank you for being so supportive of your children finding friendships in this, in this time, in this world.
00:12:49.200 --> 00:12:57.759
Father, we just thank you for being the ultimate father, the ultimate friend, the ultimate, you know, guidance in our life.
00:12:57.840 --> 00:13:03.919
And Father, I just pray that everybody who listens to this podcast today is encouraged and touched.
00:13:04.080 --> 00:13:06.639
And Father, I thank you for your word.
00:13:07.039 --> 00:13:10.159
I thank you for your love and compassion.
00:13:10.399 --> 00:13:13.519
And Father, I just love you and I praise you in Jesus' name.
00:13:13.759 --> 00:13:14.399
Amen.
00:13:14.879 --> 00:13:15.600
Love you all.
00:13:15.759 --> 00:13:16.799
I'm so glad to be back.
00:13:16.960 --> 00:13:17.919
