ABOUT THIS EPISODE
Why do the best investors almost always back the business operator over the brilliant technologist? I sat down with a venture investor who has been deploying capital since the early days of the internet and has invested through the internet, mobile and cloud waves and now AI, and he pulls back the curtain on how he separates a real technology shift from an overheated segment. This conversation dismantles the idea that AI is just another hype cycle and exposes where the money is actually moving next.

About Mark Rostick
Mark Rostick is Vice President and Senior Managing Director at Intel Capital, where he has been investing since 1999 and serves as a voting member of the investment committee. He helps manage the firm's cloud portfolio and has spent more than two decades backing cloud applications, infrastructure hardware and software, and AI, with holdings including MinIO, Immuta, Lilt, Opaque Systems, Cherre, Tetrate and Beep, and exits including Virtustream, Velostrata, Kazan Networks, Nyansa and Amplidata. He came to venture from careers in law and banking, holds an MBA and a JD from the University of South Carolina, and has sat as a director or board observer across most of the companies he has funded. He is one of the sharpest voices on the economics of technology waves, arguing that the real money is made when the entire curve shifts rather than when capital simply moves along it, and that in enterprise AI the fortunes will be won in the messy middle where adoption, not invention, is the hard part.
