00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:18.402
Hello and welcome to the latest episode of Inside Out.
00:00:18.643 --> 00:00:26.592
My name is Ian Wilkes and I'm here with the most delightful, stupendous and handsome Mr.
00:00:26.652 --> 00:00:26.993
Bennett.
00:00:28.513 --> 00:00:33.918
We're lucky this is an audio podcast, so they don't know how much you're lying on the handsome part.
00:00:34.740 --> 00:00:47.493
Well, I put my piece into AI, and honestly, it struggled a bit, but it came up with a limit to technology, right, of what AI can do with people's handsome looks.
00:00:47.552 --> 00:00:51.396
But it came back and said, we can't improve upon this handsome fella.
00:00:51.597 --> 00:00:54.780
So I think we've reached the limit of AI.
00:00:54.820 --> 00:00:55.942
You're that handsome.
00:00:56.417 --> 00:00:59.042
I certainly am capable of breaking AI.
00:00:59.942 --> 00:01:01.204
I'm happy to admit that.
00:01:01.646 --> 00:01:06.893
Anyway, it's wonderful to be with you and excited to have this conversation.
00:01:06.933 --> 00:01:09.477
I've just been away in Mexico.
00:01:09.496 --> 00:01:15.286
I went also to another city in Calgary, so we're a little bit late this week on the podcast.
00:01:15.305 --> 00:01:17.649
We want to thank our listeners for being incredibly patient.
00:01:18.209 --> 00:01:21.314
We do our best to organize and structure our podcasts.
00:01:21.894 --> 00:01:23.337
There's a preparation involved.
00:01:23.841 --> 00:01:30.034
And so we thank you for your patience in terms of getting the next podcast, this podcast that we're about to do, getting this one out.
00:01:30.817 --> 00:01:40.947
Very excited about this podcast because as I was flying up from Mexico, I was thinking about what some of the topics we could be discussing.
00:01:41.388 --> 00:01:51.920
And the one thing that kept coming back to me quite frequently, and it's probably because I was away and relaxed with my family and feeling all kind of, you know, always stress-free and quite positive.
00:01:52.379 --> 00:02:04.406
I was thinking and reflecting upon, and actually I had conversations with my family on this, thinking and reflecting upon all of the blessings that the church had brought into my life.
00:02:05.287 --> 00:02:13.878
From the time that I was investigating the church, the teaching, learning experiences as I was investigating the church, joining the church was challenging.
00:02:13.919 --> 00:02:21.348
But going forward, after the first few weeks and months of joining the church, my life transformed, improved.
00:02:21.889 --> 00:02:22.711
I met new friends.
00:02:24.574 --> 00:02:27.677
My life had a sense of purpose and meaning which I didn't have before.
00:02:28.449 --> 00:02:39.503
And I would say for the most part, almost the entire experience or most of the experience in the church was extremely positive to me.
00:02:39.544 --> 00:02:46.692
And I was thinking about we could do a conversation on the many, many qualities and attributes of the church.
00:02:47.633 --> 00:02:53.980
And by way of context, which and context is very, very important.
00:02:54.818 --> 00:03:14.510
The church, as you know, Jim, is facing many challenges, continues to face many challenges, has faced many challenges around policy, doctrine, history, leadership, women in the church, LGBTQ, tax, finance, tithing.
00:03:14.531 --> 00:03:20.920
There seems to be an endless list of issues and problems and challenges with the church.
00:03:21.602 --> 00:03:25.787
And we've covered some of those topics over the last couple of years or so.
00:03:25.806 --> 00:03:37.522
Notwithstanding, there are many, many qualities that the church brings to the world and to the members.
00:03:38.283 --> 00:03:42.990
And I've made just a bit of a list here, and I've made my own list.
00:03:43.510 --> 00:03:47.764
But what I thought we'd do, instead of me kind of reeling them off all the qualities.
00:03:47.783 --> 00:03:58.935
I thought you and I could go back and forward and just kind of highlight some of the qualities, attributes, and the blessings that the church has actually brought into your life and into my life.
00:03:59.694 --> 00:04:33.517
And I want to start off by saying that for me, being a convert to the church and going from an experience of feeling at that time as a young boy, 16 year old, and before that, My experience was a feeling of being alone, lost, little or no purpose, little or no meaning to my life, no direction, very few positive role models in my life, and low self-esteem, virtually no confidence.
00:04:34.759 --> 00:04:49.560
And I think about the blessings from the church and how the church teachings and the culture of the church, the positive teachings, elements of the church actually changed all of those things that I've just mentioned.
00:04:50.261 --> 00:05:01.795
And I think the first thing I could highlight with the church that I felt from the very first time I met the Mormon missionaries and started getting to know some of the members was a sense of friendship.
00:05:04.319 --> 00:06:16.742
And so my friends, I had some good friends growing up, just a few good friends, and I defined friendship as differently now i think from growing up when i was a young boy in yorkshire in that coal mining community in yorkshire friendship then was you know hanging out with your mates and doing fun things after school and um playing soccer or rugby or etc and they were fun times for sure but no real conversations that i had back then you know real close um uh friendships that were talking about other things other than sports and other you know physical activities there was no um emotional or um sharing one's thoughts and feelings about certain things and i certainly had those as a young man and so when i joined the church i felt that that part of me that emotional part of me and the intellectual part of me and my hopes and aspirations for my life i felt that i'd connected with a group of people that was interested in me and cared about me and wanted to be a genuine friend to me.
00:06:17.744 --> 00:06:21.288
And I really felt that almost from day one.
00:06:21.749 --> 00:06:29.016
And so when I went to church and I went into the youth program, and the youth leaders were extraordinary, they were interested in me.
00:06:29.297 --> 00:06:33.982
And I remember sitting down with the, they called it MIA back then.
00:06:34.850 --> 00:06:36.211
MIA member, right?
00:06:36.872 --> 00:06:40.197
And so you had these, you know, I got baptized.
00:06:40.218 --> 00:06:42.781
I had these interview with the, with the branch president at the time.
00:06:42.822 --> 00:06:43.903
It was really interested in me.
00:06:43.944 --> 00:06:47.069
And I was amazed that they were interested in me and my life.
00:06:48.050 --> 00:06:53.437
And I sat down with one of the youth leaders and they asked me about what I want to do with the rest of my life and where do I want to go?
00:06:53.559 --> 00:06:58.125
And it was my work or, you know, I want to go to college.
00:06:58.185 --> 00:07:02.271
And, and so these are questions that I'd never, never, no one had ever asked me before.
00:07:03.533 --> 00:07:03.613
Yeah.
00:07:03.745 --> 00:07:06.730
And so it was a completely different experience.
00:07:06.870 --> 00:07:13.838
And the person that was with me, the youth leader was with me, was just very genuine.
00:07:14.338 --> 00:07:15.279
There's a wonderful spirit.
00:07:15.800 --> 00:07:24.130
And I felt I'd come home and I felt I'd made these new friends and that actually in many ways saved me.
00:07:25.512 --> 00:07:32.161
And I will be forever grateful about these new friends that accepted me for who I was, was interested in me.
00:07:32.898 --> 00:07:35.682
And especially at a time where I needed that.
00:07:35.742 --> 00:07:36.863
And I've never forgotten that.
00:07:37.925 --> 00:07:39.927
And so I think about this actually often.
00:07:40.108 --> 00:07:53.305
I miss many of my friends in the church who have, I think, maybe decided that because I'm not active in the church, that the friendship is probably compromised, which kind of sad breaks my heart in a way.
00:07:54.427 --> 00:07:59.394
But I still retain, you know, obviously quite a few friends, you know, in the church, some at least.
00:08:00.255 --> 00:08:01.177
But that was the...
00:08:01.826 --> 00:08:10.699
One of the first amazing blessings and experiences in my life, and I am grateful to the church for that.
00:08:11.680 --> 00:08:17.889
I can think of many, many other qualities and attributes of the church, but I also want to pass this over to you and ask you...
00:08:20.865 --> 00:08:23.269
How has the church blessed your life over the years?
00:08:23.629 --> 00:08:25.250
You've been in the church your entire life.
00:08:25.290 --> 00:08:31.257
You've had extraordinary parents who've done a wonderful job raising all of you as family members.
00:08:31.298 --> 00:08:52.820
In contrast to my non-functioning family, frankly, very non-functioning, and I'd say dysfunctional family, you had a high-functioning family, wonderful relationships, and a very different youth and experience growing up in the church and a different experience to mine.
00:08:53.259 --> 00:09:10.047
Could you share with me one of your earliest thoughts where you connected the church's teachings, the experience in the church, et cetera, to a very important blessing that came into your life at the early stage of your life?
00:09:10.126 --> 00:09:15.195
And you thought, my goodness, how grateful that you are to be in the church because of this particular blessing.
00:09:15.235 --> 00:09:16.857
Could you think of one?
00:09:18.114 --> 00:09:21.798
My goodness, I had not thought to go there.
00:09:21.837 --> 00:09:26.261
And now, as you say that, something just leaps to mind.
00:09:27.644 --> 00:09:38.134
So I grew up in Southern California, and back in the day, they used to do big, huge pageants in the church.
00:09:38.914 --> 00:09:41.778
We've sort of discontinued some of that, and that makes me sad.
00:09:41.798 --> 00:09:43.659
I think we've discontinued pretty much all of them.
00:09:44.620 --> 00:09:48.255
You know, they had the Hill Cumorah pageant in New York.
00:09:49.277 --> 00:09:55.683
They had some pageant, which I've never seen, but it was down by the Manti Temple.
00:09:55.703 --> 00:10:02.070
And at one point they did a pageant called Third Nephi.
00:10:03.610 --> 00:10:10.018
It was a musical and it was essentially a dramatization of the story of Third Nephi.
00:10:10.038 --> 00:10:14.261
And on this occasion, I was 11 years old.
00:10:15.618 --> 00:10:28.135
And my aunt lived in Westwood, California, and she was assigned to gather children who would play the Nephite children waiting for Christ to come.
00:10:28.176 --> 00:10:38.431
And we were in Los Angeles, and I was already sort of a budding thespian.
00:10:38.471 --> 00:10:41.195
And she says, and you'll get paid.
00:10:41.215 --> 00:10:43.096
It's a paid position.
00:10:43.970 --> 00:10:48.193
I got paid for the entire run of the show.
00:10:48.214 --> 00:10:51.057
I got paid a whopping$5.
00:10:51.977 --> 00:10:57.082
And that just meant the world to me.
00:10:57.263 --> 00:10:59.625
I was like, aha, I'm a paid actor now.
00:10:59.845 --> 00:11:00.426
I've made it.
00:11:00.446 --> 00:11:01.167
I've arrived.
00:11:02.207 --> 00:11:04.909
Anyway, we did this show.
00:11:04.929 --> 00:11:12.717
And I don't even think I saw it because I was backstage.
00:11:13.601 --> 00:11:20.491
for most of it, so I don't even know the bulk of it, but we were taught two songs to sing in the show.
00:11:21.854 --> 00:11:26.801
One of them is a song that has since been included in the children's hymn book.
00:11:27.743 --> 00:11:29.846
It's called I Feel My Savior's Love.
00:11:29.966 --> 00:11:32.448
Are you familiar with I Feel My Savior's Love?
00:11:32.490 --> 00:11:37.876
And this came from this pageant.
00:11:37.917 --> 00:11:39.219
It was written for this pageant.
00:11:40.620 --> 00:11:47.898
And There was another song called The Love of God, which I'm foreshadowing the end of the story.
00:11:47.957 --> 00:11:54.946
But for a very long time, I had not heard since the time that I did the show.
00:11:54.985 --> 00:11:58.470
And it goes something like, The love of God leads me on.
00:11:58.490 --> 00:12:00.652
His precious love fills my song.
00:12:00.692 --> 00:12:01.774
His love is pure.
00:12:01.793 --> 00:12:04.476
How freely it comes that we may all be one.
00:12:04.496 --> 00:12:06.499
I just remember snippets of it.
00:12:06.538 --> 00:12:07.580
I don't remember the whole thing.
00:12:08.520 --> 00:12:08.841
Anyway.
00:12:09.826 --> 00:12:18.738
We were doing this and I have always sort of felt connections to the divine through music.
00:12:19.578 --> 00:12:29.572
And it's one of the reasons why the Tabernacle Choir is so special to me is because I feel that connection every time I go to a Tabernacle Choir rehearsal.
00:12:30.312 --> 00:12:35.120
Every time I have an opportunity to sing just beautiful music with talented spiritual people.
00:12:35.159 --> 00:12:41.730
And it's It's how I connect, and it sort of is rooted in this experience.
00:12:42.572 --> 00:12:50.682
So I remember just the first time the show was put on in the Shrine Auditorium.
00:12:52.144 --> 00:12:55.109
The Academy Awards had been held in the Shrine Auditorium.
00:12:55.188 --> 00:12:57.591
It's just this big, massive space.
00:12:58.653 --> 00:13:02.097
What's very funny is it's right next to the University of Southern California.
00:13:02.594 --> 00:13:06.480
When I was 11 years old, my mother said, would you go to the Shrine Auditorium?
00:13:06.679 --> 00:13:09.504
Whatever you do, do not go outside.
00:13:09.544 --> 00:13:12.809
This is the roughest area in the whole world.
00:13:12.850 --> 00:13:14.192
There are gangs.
00:13:14.852 --> 00:13:18.720
You're going to be killed if you walk outside.
00:13:18.759 --> 00:13:22.085
And so I was terrified of going outside.
00:13:22.125 --> 00:13:29.856
And then years later, I lived on campus at the University of Southern California in my freshman dorm.
00:13:30.658 --> 00:13:33.821
And my first class was at the Performing Arts Annex.
00:13:34.562 --> 00:13:37.966
And I had to walk past the Shrine Auditorium to get to it.
00:13:38.706 --> 00:13:42.490
I thought, I'm now living in the most dangerous place in the world.
00:13:43.312 --> 00:13:44.373
Which it really kind of was.
00:13:44.413 --> 00:13:48.216
I mean, I lived in Los Angeles during the 1992 Rodney King riots.
00:13:49.197 --> 00:13:50.278
That's a whole other story.
00:13:51.120 --> 00:13:54.443
So here I am playing one of the Nephite children.
00:13:55.725 --> 00:13:59.710
The actor who played Jesus was...
00:14:00.322 --> 00:14:05.809
I projected everything I thought or believed about Jesus onto him.
00:14:06.751 --> 00:14:23.977
That when he appeared to the Nephites and we burst into song, I felt this sort of overwhelming connection to the divine and this overwhelming realization that Jesus was real.
00:14:23.998 --> 00:14:29.145
This actor wasn't really Jesus, but there really was a Jesus.
00:14:29.922 --> 00:14:33.706
And Jesus knew me and cared about me.
00:14:33.745 --> 00:14:42.375
And at one point, there was a testimony meeting for the entire cast.
00:14:42.416 --> 00:14:49.364
And we were seated in the Shrine Auditorium with its, I don't know, 3,000, 10,000 seats?
00:14:49.464 --> 00:14:49.884
I don't know.
00:14:50.105 --> 00:14:51.927
It's just this huge space.
00:14:52.606 --> 00:14:55.090
And we were sort of huddled up next to the stage.
00:14:56.572 --> 00:14:56.731
And...
00:14:58.946 --> 00:15:19.408
as we were singing it, or I'm sorry, as at the testimony meeting, uh, the guy who'd written the music was talking and he said, I want you to remember every time you sing the love of God, because you feel something every time you sing that.
00:15:19.427 --> 00:15:28.945
I mean, he just said that to all of us, but it felt like he was boring right into my soul, uh, And I thought, yeah, I do feel something every time I sing that.
00:15:30.046 --> 00:15:34.551
And he said, that which you feel is the love of God.
00:15:36.192 --> 00:15:41.578
And that just sort of kind of exploded into me.
00:15:41.599 --> 00:15:51.129
I mean, I think of the Joseph Smith saying, never did any passage of scripture come with more power to the heart of man than this did at this time to mine.
00:15:51.931 --> 00:15:53.172
That's sort of how I felt.
00:15:53.873 --> 00:15:54.413
And it was...
00:15:54.850 --> 00:16:11.711
the one time I can sort of pinpoint in my youth, in my childhood, where I knew God loved me, I knew God cared about me, and I knew God knew me by name, that I was important to God, me individually, little Jimmy Bennett.
00:16:13.293 --> 00:16:28.443
And it was decades later, probably about 10 years ago, when I went to a state conference, and I don't know where they dug it up, But the state choir had found an arrangement of the song, The Love of God.
00:16:28.484 --> 00:16:31.326
And they started to sing it.
00:16:31.648 --> 00:16:35.292
And instantly, that came back to me.
00:16:35.672 --> 00:16:39.096
Instantly, in that moment, I felt the love of God.
00:16:39.115 --> 00:16:40.758
I knew God loved me.
00:16:40.778 --> 00:16:44.101
I knew God knew me and knew me by name.
00:16:45.383 --> 00:16:47.985
And it was as if no time had passed whatsoever.
00:16:49.128 --> 00:16:50.950
And those kinds of moments...
00:16:51.778 --> 00:16:57.304
Those kinds of connections are things that the church actively facilitates.
00:16:57.365 --> 00:17:12.986
When we talk about the church, and even if we're critical of the church, there is no denying, at least in my life, that the church has facilitated a connection to deity.
00:17:13.886 --> 00:17:27.340
That through the church, through activity in the church, through service in the church, I have been able to essentially be introduced to God and make that connection with God.
00:17:28.461 --> 00:17:44.086
And so that's one of the reasons I think why so many people, even the people who are critical of the church or even if they're excommunicated from the church, the cliche is you leave the church and you can't leave it alone.
00:17:45.122 --> 00:18:04.321
But to some degree, you leave the church, and the church can't leave you alone in a good way, in that all of the goodness, all of the teachings, that facilitation of the relationship with the divine, that doesn't just banish when you walk out the door.
00:18:04.583 --> 00:18:05.443
That's still with you.
00:18:06.183 --> 00:18:08.527
So that's my long, lengthy answer to your question.
00:18:09.528 --> 00:18:17.387
But before I throw it back to you, Would you indulge me in telling a more modern story that I think goes along with this?
00:18:19.470 --> 00:18:20.612
Please do.
00:18:21.071 --> 00:18:34.688
Well, and I'm a little, I'm hoping that this podcast comes out after the other person in the story releases their video where they tell this story.
00:18:35.949 --> 00:18:40.314
I think many of our listeners would be acquainted with our friend Nemo the Mormon.
00:18:41.250 --> 00:18:43.412
who we've interviewed on this podcast.
00:18:44.292 --> 00:18:52.301
And when we interviewed him on this podcast, he started talking about his love for music, his connection to the divine that he feels through choral music.
00:18:53.242 --> 00:19:03.875
And I think I even said on the podcast, it may have been afterwards when we were talking, but I think it may even be on the podcast, I said, look, the Tabernacle Choir has what they call musical guests.
00:19:04.836 --> 00:19:12.792
I am allowed to invite people to come to a Tabernacle Choir rehearsal and actually sing with the choir.
00:19:12.813 --> 00:19:15.717
You won't be singing in a performance, but you'll be singing in a rehearsal.
00:19:16.178 --> 00:19:20.825
We'll give you the music and you'll sing along as if you were a member of the choir.
00:19:20.845 --> 00:19:29.557
And near the end of the rehearsal, Mac Wilberg will ask you to stand up and he'll read your bio and everybody will applaud and be glad that you're there.
00:19:29.598 --> 00:19:32.742
And he said, boy, that would be a lot of fun.
00:19:32.823 --> 00:19:37.049
And I said, well, let me know well in advance because it takes forever.
00:19:37.089 --> 00:19:39.554
I booked...
00:19:40.417 --> 00:19:49.528
these guests sometime in the summer of last year, like June, July, or it was probably right after I had talked to Nemo.
00:19:49.567 --> 00:19:51.329
We had talked to Nemo on our podcast.
00:19:52.711 --> 00:19:56.296
And this didn't happen until just a couple of weeks ago.
00:19:56.336 --> 00:19:59.459
March 6th was the day that he had been booked.
00:20:00.519 --> 00:20:08.608
Because he said, yeah, I'd love to do that, and I'm going to be in Utah in March, and I would love nothing more than to sing with the Tab Choir.
00:20:08.648 --> 00:20:11.045
So, I booked this.
00:20:11.464 --> 00:20:14.048
I went through all of the channels to make it happen.
00:20:14.189 --> 00:20:18.474
And then in September, Nemo was excommunicated.
00:20:19.676 --> 00:20:22.902
And he sent me a message and said, is that going to affect anything?
00:20:24.263 --> 00:20:33.056
Well, the first thing he said was, he actually sent me the message before he was excommunicated because he says, do you have to be a member of the church to sing with the choir?
00:20:33.857 --> 00:20:36.000
And I said, no, which is absolutely true.
00:20:36.040 --> 00:20:36.500
In fact...
00:20:36.961 --> 00:20:41.086
They encourage you to invite non-members to sing with the choir.
00:20:41.126 --> 00:20:48.376
I think there's no rule as to the status of the people you invite to sing.
00:20:48.457 --> 00:20:53.041
And if they're non-members, there are none of the conditions that apply to the members.
00:20:53.143 --> 00:21:01.053
If you're a member, you have to be either over 80 years old or live more than 500 miles away from the tabernacle.
00:21:02.054 --> 00:21:03.996
So they don't want people to just invite their...
00:21:05.506 --> 00:21:13.616
friends who live next door to them who are in the church, but they see it as a missionary opportunity, and so they want you to invite non-members.
00:21:15.439 --> 00:21:21.247
Now, excommunicated members, that's a little bit, I would think, a little bit of a gray area.
00:21:21.307 --> 00:21:22.167
I had never asked.
00:21:22.188 --> 00:21:23.068
I hadn't thought about it.
00:21:24.050 --> 00:21:28.616
And he said, it's looking like I'm going to be excommunicated, and I would still love to do this.
00:21:28.737 --> 00:21:32.602
And I said, okay, then tell you what.
00:21:33.153 --> 00:21:40.182
I don't see a problem as long as we don't use this occasion to embarrass the church.
00:21:41.045 --> 00:21:43.887
I think in your bio, we don't talk about your podcast.
00:21:43.928 --> 00:21:45.830
We just talk about your choral experience.
00:21:46.632 --> 00:21:59.869
And I would very much appreciate it if you just didn't let anybody know you were doing this, that you don't go on your podcast and advertise this, that you're not trying to pull a fast one on the church, that you're not trying to embarrass the church.
00:22:00.546 --> 00:22:04.112
And you know, could not have been more gracious, could not have been more understanding.
00:22:04.132 --> 00:22:05.513
No, I understand that.
00:22:05.554 --> 00:22:06.736
That's entirely appropriate.
00:22:07.798 --> 00:22:08.799
I very much want to do this.
00:22:09.441 --> 00:22:12.987
So time goes on and he shows up in Utah.
00:22:13.086 --> 00:22:16.692
I took him out to dinner and then we went to the tabernacle.
00:22:17.974 --> 00:22:26.769
And it's really, really fun to see the choir through somebody else's eyes because you sort of start to take it for granted a little bit.
00:22:27.650 --> 00:22:44.515
You know, you go up and you sit in the choir loft and you really don't get a sense of what the choir sounds like as a full thing because you're in your own little corner of the world and you're listening to the people around you and you just get kind of a warped sense of what the total of it is.
00:22:45.155 --> 00:22:59.079
But when Nemo came, I sat with him out in the choir audience and he was not invited to come and sing in the loft until after sort of the opening There was a little bit of an opening rehearsal.
00:22:59.140 --> 00:22:59.580
Then there was a...
00:23:00.000 --> 00:23:06.269
We always have this sort of short devotional where a member of the choir presidency just shares a spiritual thought.
00:23:07.069 --> 00:23:08.791
And then the rehearsal begins in earnest.
00:23:09.152 --> 00:23:10.914
And that's when he was taken up to sing.
00:23:11.915 --> 00:23:22.548
But as we walked in and as I sat out there and the choir was singing and you could get the full impact and feel it and you could see the look on Nemo's face.
00:23:23.349 --> 00:23:24.131
I mean, he just...
00:23:24.351 --> 00:23:25.071
He was in heaven.
00:23:25.413 --> 00:23:26.134
He was just...
00:23:26.625 --> 00:23:28.307
wow, this is amazing.
00:23:28.888 --> 00:23:31.593
And I just thought, yeah, it really is, isn't it?
00:23:32.653 --> 00:23:36.159
So he ended up getting taken up into the loft.
00:23:37.300 --> 00:23:43.409
And I actually didn't sing in the loft that rehearsal because I was going to be gone on Sunday.
00:23:44.289 --> 00:23:55.685
So for attendance purposes, if you're going to be gone on Sunday, you still come to the rehearsal, but they ask you to sort of sit on the side so that they can get a sense of who's going to be there on Sunday so they know what the choir numbers are going to look like.
00:23:56.769 --> 00:24:12.638
And so I was sitting on the side and one of the guys who he's, he's, I'm not sure what his official title is, but they're most of the people who are volunteers for the choir are former members of the choir.
00:24:13.540 --> 00:24:17.387
You have to end your service of the choir when you reach 60 years old.
00:24:17.407 --> 00:24:18.750
And many of these people are.
00:24:19.009 --> 00:24:21.913
say, oof, I want to do whatever I can to sort of stay involved.
00:24:22.512 --> 00:24:29.599
And so they volunteer, and some of them volunteer in the wardrobe department, and they deal with your suits and women's dresses.
00:24:29.720 --> 00:24:36.487
And other people, this guy is one of the volunteers who essentially arranges choir seating.
00:24:37.607 --> 00:24:47.657
Every Sunday, there are different people who aren't there, and we get put into different chairs to make sure we look good and that there aren't any holes in the presentation.
00:24:47.778 --> 00:24:53.491
And And so this guy is the guy who actually took Nemo and found him a seat.
00:24:54.513 --> 00:24:58.298
And he came to me and he says, your friend looks like he's having a blast.
00:24:59.420 --> 00:25:00.862
And I said, yeah, he does, doesn't he?
00:25:00.902 --> 00:25:01.844
And he did.
00:25:01.884 --> 00:25:03.806
Everybody around him was sort of chatting with him.
00:25:03.846 --> 00:25:05.208
He just seemed to be having a great time.
00:25:05.228 --> 00:25:09.374
And then we were talking and he says, now, is he a member of the church?
00:25:11.135 --> 00:25:15.281
And I got a little nervous and I said, well, let's see.
00:25:15.617 --> 00:25:17.520
How do I finesse this?
00:25:17.740 --> 00:25:19.103
And I decided, you know what?
00:25:19.343 --> 00:25:20.865
What I'm going to do is just tell the truth.
00:25:21.786 --> 00:25:22.747
And I said, he used to be.
00:25:22.787 --> 00:25:26.372
And I said, he was when I booked this.
00:25:27.574 --> 00:25:28.775
And we talked a little.
00:25:29.096 --> 00:25:31.298
And I said, he's since been excommunicated.
00:25:31.338 --> 00:25:32.259
He's a podcaster.
00:25:32.941 --> 00:25:34.722
And he said some things that were controversial.
00:25:34.843 --> 00:25:36.164
And he's since been excommunicated.
00:25:36.184 --> 00:25:37.366
But he still wanted to do this.
00:25:38.107 --> 00:25:39.630
Is that going to be a problem?
00:25:41.392 --> 00:25:42.673
And instantly...
00:25:43.362 --> 00:25:45.403
This guy said, oh, no, no, no, of course not.
00:25:45.604 --> 00:25:46.805
I hope he has a lovely time.
00:25:47.286 --> 00:25:49.228
I mean, there was absolutely no judgment.
00:25:49.327 --> 00:25:51.250
There was absolutely no condemnation.
00:25:52.049 --> 00:25:54.192
When we got in there, I got a text message.
00:25:55.354 --> 00:25:56.974
And it was from a number I didn't recognize.
00:25:57.015 --> 00:25:58.497
And it said, now, is Nemo sitting next to you?
00:25:59.718 --> 00:26:00.778
I went, oh, crud.
00:26:01.179 --> 00:26:01.680
Who's this?
00:26:03.141 --> 00:26:03.701
Am I in trouble?
00:26:04.422 --> 00:26:08.266
And I Googled the number and found out it was a choir member who was cool.
00:26:09.606 --> 00:26:11.229
And I texted back, yes, it's Nemo.
00:26:11.269 --> 00:26:12.430
Please don't get me into trouble.
00:26:13.442 --> 00:26:14.784
And he says, oh, no, no, I want to meet him.
00:26:15.785 --> 00:26:25.659
And so usually after they're introduced, they take them out and take some more pictures with them and they finish the rehearsal doing more music.
00:26:25.778 --> 00:26:31.287
But the guy I was sitting with who does the seating said, your friend looks like he's having way too much fun.
00:26:31.446 --> 00:26:33.108
Can we just leave him until the end of the rehearsal?
00:26:33.328 --> 00:26:34.691
I'm like, yeah, yeah, please do.
00:26:34.730 --> 00:26:36.513
And.
00:26:37.506 --> 00:26:43.711
And so we get to the end of the rehearsal and he comes down and the friend who texted me comes to meet him.
00:26:44.272 --> 00:26:47.056
And a few other people recognized him and it was all positive.
00:26:47.215 --> 00:26:49.519
And they're like, Nemo, hey, it's so fun to see you.
00:26:50.680 --> 00:26:55.684
So it was just the perfect evening until the very end.
00:26:56.986 --> 00:27:01.111
We get to the very end and we're literally walking out the door.
00:27:02.491 --> 00:27:03.874
And this woman who...
00:27:04.673 --> 00:27:06.596
I'm not going to name names.
00:27:06.676 --> 00:27:08.520
I don't want to give anything that might identify her.
00:27:08.641 --> 00:27:09.803
I said, she's a woman.
00:27:09.903 --> 00:27:26.510
So you can try to figure it out from, it wasn't one of the men, but it was a woman who walks up to him and she said something like, um, Nemo in his recording of it says, he said, I recognized you.
00:27:26.550 --> 00:27:30.178
I remember her saying, I know who you are.
00:27:31.298 --> 00:27:42.490
Either way, I'm not sure which one of us is right, but either way, it was very clearly a sarcastic attack or like, aha, I've caught you kind of thing.
00:27:42.509 --> 00:27:44.672
I know who you are.
00:27:44.692 --> 00:27:50.258
And Nemo just tried to play it off and just went, shh, don't tell anyone.
00:27:50.538 --> 00:27:51.779
You know, just like, ha, ha, ha.
00:27:52.701 --> 00:27:56.345
He didn't, I don't think he recognized just how hostile she was being.
00:27:57.625 --> 00:28:00.950
And then she looks at me and she says, and I told Grant.
00:28:02.114 --> 00:28:05.678
Now, Grant is a former member of the choir.
00:28:05.718 --> 00:28:09.021
He actually sang in the choir with me while I'd been here.
00:28:09.082 --> 00:28:15.150
But then he was sort of promoted to become the manager of the men's section.
00:28:15.630 --> 00:28:20.756
There's one man who manages the men's section and one woman who manages the women's section.
00:28:20.796 --> 00:28:26.202
And Grant is sort of the head guy for all of the men in the choir.
00:28:27.263 --> 00:28:28.705
And she says, and I told Grant.
00:28:29.857 --> 00:28:33.923
And then she looked at Nemo and says, well, I hope you had a good time.
00:28:33.962 --> 00:28:35.525
Just like that.
00:28:35.565 --> 00:28:41.732
You know, it's just, it's like, oh, come on, come on.
00:28:41.772 --> 00:28:43.454
Why do you have to be rude?
00:28:44.076 --> 00:28:45.417
Why do you have to be unkind?
00:28:45.458 --> 00:28:50.384
This was such a lovely evening and he didn't hurt anybody.
00:28:50.403 --> 00:28:56.340
He had a great time and And so we walked back to the car, and I just felt terrible.
00:28:56.520 --> 00:28:58.722
And I was apologizing up, down, and sideways.
00:28:58.784 --> 00:29:03.968
It was made a little bit better by another guy who walked up to him, recognized him, and said, hey, Nemo.
00:29:04.067 --> 00:29:05.169
Hey, it's so nice to see you.
00:29:06.830 --> 00:29:15.858
But just this one person had just cast a pall over the entire evening, which was such a lovely evening.
00:29:16.759 --> 00:29:19.583
And so Nemo drives off in his car.
00:29:19.623 --> 00:29:20.763
I drive off in mine.
00:29:20.884 --> 00:29:22.625
And I went, I want to get out in front of this.
00:29:23.425 --> 00:29:26.529
I don't want to just have this percolating out there.
00:29:26.589 --> 00:29:31.916
If I'm in trouble for having invited someone who's been excommunicated to sing with the choir, I want to know now.
00:29:32.277 --> 00:29:35.161
So I found Grant's phone number, and I gave him a call.
00:29:36.162 --> 00:29:37.344
And Grant was very pleasant.
00:29:37.384 --> 00:29:37.804
Hi, Jim.
00:29:37.844 --> 00:29:38.265
How are you?
00:29:38.585 --> 00:29:39.105
Hi, Grant.
00:29:39.165 --> 00:29:39.926
I'm doing well.
00:29:40.007 --> 00:29:44.452
And he just was like, oh, you know, how was your friend?
00:29:44.492 --> 00:29:46.055
Your friend seemed to enjoy it.
00:29:46.576 --> 00:29:48.317
I had also invited another woman.
00:29:49.026 --> 00:29:50.847
It was completely non-controversial.
00:29:50.948 --> 00:29:52.150
I'll tell that story very quickly.
00:29:52.190 --> 00:29:53.451
I didn't know this woman.
00:29:53.652 --> 00:29:59.199
This was somebody I'd met on Twitter who said, my grandmother is dying and her final wish is to sing in the choir.
00:30:00.200 --> 00:30:01.902
And I went, oh, well, I can arrange that.
00:30:03.364 --> 00:30:04.144
You know, I'm a big shot.
00:30:04.765 --> 00:30:07.969
So these are the only musical guests I've ever had were Nemo and this woman.
00:30:09.171 --> 00:30:14.897
She was 85 years old and she had throat cancer and her vocal cords were paralyzed.
00:30:15.874 --> 00:30:18.917
And she just wanted to sit in the choir loft and sing.
00:30:18.938 --> 00:30:27.750
And Mac Wilberg, the choir director, was visibly moved when he read her bio.
00:30:28.251 --> 00:30:33.819
He just told the story of how she'd always wanted to sing with the choir, but she'd never really got the opportunity.
00:30:33.859 --> 00:30:43.513
And now, at the age of 85, with her vocal cords paralyzed, she just wants to sit in the loft and feel the testimonies of all the people around her.
00:30:44.642 --> 00:30:49.827
And at the end of it, she came away and she said, it was a miracle.
00:30:49.847 --> 00:30:51.730
I was able to sing.
00:30:51.769 --> 00:30:55.394
And for one night, she was able to sing.
00:30:55.413 --> 00:31:00.118
And it was just such a lovely experience, absolutely uplifting.
00:31:00.720 --> 00:31:05.285
And she's still very much an active member of the church, so nobody was going to give her a hard time for that.
00:31:05.345 --> 00:31:09.409
But it was Nemo that was attracting all the attention.
00:31:09.489 --> 00:31:13.693
And when I called Grant, I said, I understand this woman has talked to you.
00:31:15.041 --> 00:31:19.267
And I just wanted to, and he said, oh, did she do that?
00:31:19.646 --> 00:31:20.587
She wasn't supposed to do that.
00:31:21.128 --> 00:31:22.309
Oh, I hope she wasn't rude.
00:31:23.070 --> 00:31:24.972
And I'm like, oh, she absolutely was rude.
00:31:26.013 --> 00:31:27.695
Oh, no, we'll talk to her.
00:31:27.736 --> 00:31:29.817
We'll make sure, we'll smooth that over.
00:31:29.857 --> 00:31:30.558
I'm so sorry.
00:31:30.578 --> 00:31:33.261
He says, Jim, you did absolutely nothing wrong.
00:31:33.342 --> 00:31:35.324
We were very grateful to have him here.
00:31:35.364 --> 00:31:37.425
Please let him know that.
00:31:37.926 --> 00:31:41.349
Please let him know how much we appreciated his enthusiasm.
00:31:41.369 --> 00:31:44.513
I mean, they just could not have been more gracious.
00:31:45.346 --> 00:31:53.478
Well, this thing escalated because I was out of town that weekend and I'd gone down to Southern California with my family.
00:31:53.518 --> 00:31:57.683
We went and watched a tennis tournament in Indian Wells, which is right by Palm Springs.
00:31:59.005 --> 00:32:06.635
And I saw on my phone, on Twitter, there's an account that attacks me.
00:32:06.655 --> 00:32:08.358
He's been attacking me for about four years.
00:32:09.941 --> 00:32:13.286
And they had a picture of Nemo singing in the choir.
00:32:14.402 --> 00:32:25.413
And it was so obvious that the woman who had come and insulted him and been rude to him was the woman who had taken the picture.
00:32:25.453 --> 00:32:27.016
You can see from the camera angle.
00:32:27.556 --> 00:32:28.217
You can just look.
00:32:28.317 --> 00:32:34.242
The person taking the picture had to be sitting where this person sits in the choir loft.
00:32:35.223 --> 00:32:36.986
And it was just, this is Jim Bennett.
00:32:37.026 --> 00:32:39.709
He brings apostates to...
00:32:40.546 --> 00:32:41.906
to sing with the choir.
00:32:42.027 --> 00:32:44.869
Jim, stop bringing apostates to sing with the choir.
00:32:44.930 --> 00:32:45.590
How dare you?
00:32:45.651 --> 00:32:46.330
Blah, blah, blah.
00:32:47.112 --> 00:32:48.432
And I went, oh my goodness.
00:32:48.634 --> 00:32:54.138
And it was at least kind of a relief to know that this woman, I assume this woman ran this account.
00:32:55.000 --> 00:33:02.185
She has since denied it, that she doesn't run it, but she had posted this picture in some private Facebook group.
00:33:03.488 --> 00:33:07.211
Anyway, so then I thought, okay, this is escalating out of control.
00:33:07.250 --> 00:33:09.053
This is just terrible.
00:33:09.073 --> 00:33:10.013
This is embarrassing.
00:33:10.529 --> 00:33:12.051
And so I texted Grant.
00:33:12.893 --> 00:33:14.994
I said, Grant, I just hope to let this die.
00:33:15.035 --> 00:33:20.481
But this post has appeared on Twitter from an account that's been harassing me for four years.
00:33:21.021 --> 00:33:23.664
And now I know that this woman is behind this account.
00:33:23.766 --> 00:33:26.749
And I just, I don't know what to do.
00:33:26.769 --> 00:33:28.451
I really think this is a problem.
00:33:28.590 --> 00:33:30.653
And he says, oh, it absolutely is a problem.
00:33:30.693 --> 00:33:32.035
We will take care of it on Sunday.
00:33:33.436 --> 00:33:37.701
And so after the broadcast on Sunday, I got a call from Grant.
00:33:38.625 --> 00:33:39.307
And he talked to him.
00:33:39.326 --> 00:33:41.891
He says, yes, we sort of read her the riot act.
00:33:41.990 --> 00:33:45.455
If she does steps out of line again and does this again, she's on a short leash.
00:33:46.257 --> 00:33:47.178
She's in big trouble.
00:33:48.078 --> 00:33:56.490
And she said, I just don't think you understand just all the terrible things that Nemo has said about the church.
00:33:58.012 --> 00:33:59.615
And Grant said, really?
00:33:59.635 --> 00:34:01.137
So did Alma the Younger.
00:34:01.157 --> 00:34:03.121
So did Paul.
00:34:03.141 --> 00:34:05.544
He was attacking the early Christians.
00:34:05.564 --> 00:34:06.846
I mean...
00:34:07.074 --> 00:34:25.393
The whole experience was just so encouraging to me because choir leadership, every step of the way, was going out of their way to be inclusive, to be kind, to be welcoming.
00:34:25.432 --> 00:34:32.400
And the thing that kept coming up over and over and over again is, I really hope he had a great experience.
00:34:33.121 --> 00:34:36.096
I really hope that he felt the spirit.
00:34:37.016 --> 00:34:44.288
And good for you, Jim, for giving this guy an opportunity to engage with the church in a positive way.
00:34:44.327 --> 00:34:47.612
And Nemo has since recorded his experience.
00:34:47.934 --> 00:34:57.809
Because the other thing I said to Grant was, I had talked to Nemo about this and told him, hey, don't, can we just not talk about this?
00:34:57.869 --> 00:34:59.431
Can you just not call attention to this?
00:35:00.492 --> 00:35:03.617
And Grant said, tell him to talk about it all he wants.
00:35:04.130 --> 00:35:06.572
Tell him to call as much attention to it as he wants.
00:35:07.454 --> 00:35:08.755
We were grateful to have him here.
00:35:08.795 --> 00:35:10.056
We hope he had a great time.
00:35:11.217 --> 00:35:25.635
So the moral of the story, at least in the context of the discussion we're having here on this episode, is that it is so easy to look at the scandal of the moment.
00:35:26.777 --> 00:35:41.623
We look at all of the things that are happening today in our small, and I think it's a relatively small corner of the online world where we see people who are in trouble with the church or even excommunicated from the church.
00:35:42.965 --> 00:35:55.422
And I think they have sort of a larger outsized, those moments have a larger outsized presence in at least my mind than they do in the world at large.
00:35:55.702 --> 00:36:03.385
I think for the most part, most members of the church go about their business and go about their worship without being troubled by any of this.
00:36:04.166 --> 00:36:17.483
And I often think, okay, well, all the terrible people who are online, the people who attack me relentlessly, the Desnets and those sorts of folks, they have an outsized influence on my perception of the church.
00:36:18.065 --> 00:36:36.757
The reality is I think the vast majority of the members of the church and of the leaders of the church are good, wonderful, decent people who would do anything to help you and do anything to lift you up.
00:36:37.659 --> 00:37:03.902
And so on the whole, you know, when we talk about, we say things that are critical of the church or we point out something that's happening that we're not happy with, I just think it's essential to remember that at its core and the overwhelming majority of the people In this church, this is a force for good.
00:37:03.942 --> 00:37:06.043
These are good people.
00:37:07.344 --> 00:37:13.751
This church does good and even great things and blesses lives and lifts people up.
00:37:14.592 --> 00:37:16.253
And yes, it's not perfect.
00:37:16.855 --> 00:37:18.757
Yes, it falls down on occasion.
00:37:18.836 --> 00:37:19.418
So do I.
00:37:19.458 --> 00:37:21.719
As an individual, all of us do.
00:37:22.820 --> 00:37:33.313
And I think we need to give as much grace to the church as a whole That we give individuals who struggle and fall down and then get back up and try to do good things.
00:37:34.153 --> 00:37:39.721
But I just, throughout my life, in summation here, and then I will shut up.
00:37:40.862 --> 00:37:42.925
I've said enough for two episodes here probably.
00:37:43.726 --> 00:37:51.016
But in summation, the church has blessed my life in immeasurable ways.
00:37:51.876 --> 00:37:55.521
From the time I was born all the way till now.
00:37:56.065 --> 00:37:58.168
And it continues to bless my life.
00:37:59.168 --> 00:38:25.657
And so if there is any doubt about that, if there's anybody listening to this podcast who thinks that Jim Bennett and Ian Wilkes, even though Ian Wilkes is no longer a member of the church, that thinks that we are somehow in any way opposed to the church or don't want the church to flourish and thrive, you're absolutely wrong.
00:38:26.402 --> 00:38:31.170
The reason we're doing this, the reason we engage with this is because we love this church.
00:38:31.389 --> 00:38:35.777
This church has blessed both of our lives, continues to bless our lives.
00:38:36.538 --> 00:38:44.170
And we want to make sure that it continues to do so long after we're gone.
00:38:44.550 --> 00:38:49.177
Continues to do so for our children and grandchildren and for the whole world.
00:38:49.518 --> 00:38:50.300
So there you go.
00:38:50.320 --> 00:38:52.864
I told you big, long stories.
00:38:52.923 --> 00:38:53.864
I answered your question.
00:38:54.465 --> 00:38:57.969
I hijacked it and told the Nemo story, but I just want that out there.
00:38:57.989 --> 00:39:03.434
I want my side of that story out there because I think it makes the church look great.
00:39:04.534 --> 00:39:05.996
I think the church did a great thing here.
00:39:07.818 --> 00:39:07.998
Yeah.
00:39:09.099 --> 00:39:11.581
I want to thank you for sharing that story there with Nemo.
00:39:11.621 --> 00:39:23.313
And as I listened to, I think this is extraordinary conversation and very timely because, you know, we're talking about the blessings that the church brings into our lives.
00:39:24.641 --> 00:39:25.282
And there are many.
00:39:26.664 --> 00:39:34.976
And you shared earlier your connection to deity, to God, to Jesus Christ, and your sense of spirituality through music.
00:39:35.338 --> 00:39:36.179
Very, very important to you.
00:39:36.318 --> 00:39:37.981
It's who you are.
00:39:38.181 --> 00:39:39.804
It's the very core of who you are.
00:39:39.844 --> 00:39:46.193
And Nemo, of course, had clearly a very positive, constructive experience.
00:39:46.213 --> 00:39:50.340
He also connects to his own spirituality through music.
00:39:50.380 --> 00:39:51.742
And so it's a wonderful connection.
00:39:51.905 --> 00:40:00.101
blessing to him and to you to be able to go to the choir and to participate, to listen, and to experience that level of spirituality through music.
00:40:02.505 --> 00:40:11.603
That is a really important area of your life where your life and your family is enriched spiritually through music.
00:40:12.063 --> 00:40:14.007
And the church is phenomenal.
00:40:14.369 --> 00:40:22.340
I mean, You know, the hymns, the choir, you know, the connection with God and the connection with community, the connection with each other.
00:40:22.380 --> 00:40:23.320
Music connects us.
00:40:24.322 --> 00:40:28.108
The words, the lyrics, the sounds, the melodies, the spirituality behind them.
00:40:28.148 --> 00:40:31.932
And it's very, very important to you and to many others for sharing that.
00:40:32.833 --> 00:40:38.541
I think what's extraordinary about this conversation is that as we, our listeners may not know this, but we, our...
00:40:39.202 --> 00:41:11.554
type and level of preparation for these podcasts varies often we have a topic we think about it you do your research i do my research we come to the podcast um usually uh prepared sometimes it's um you know prepared with notes of course other times uh for whatever reason the conversation goes off in a different direction and on often i think at least in a very wonderful direction and i think this podcast is no uh this conversation no exception as i was listening to you and And again, grateful for you sharing your insights and your stories there.
00:41:12.976 --> 00:41:28.153
You touched upon another area, a note that I made in preparation for this conversation, which is perhaps the church's greatest attribute, arguably, the members.
00:41:28.594 --> 00:41:30.777
And I've got that here in my notes here.
00:41:30.797 --> 00:41:37.726
And I want to just kind of add to what you've said, because my life has been incredibly difficult.
00:41:37.954 --> 00:41:42.028
blessed and enriched through the members of the church.
00:41:43.032 --> 00:42:06.358
I could say after 35 years of serving in the church, different callings, different levels, following, leading, serving a mission, being a bishop, serving in the state presidency, working in the auxiliaries, working in some volunteer capacity, like helping hands in Edinburgh where, you know, the state got together in Edinburgh and did a lot of charity work in the Edinburgh stake, et cetera.
00:42:07.519 --> 00:42:23.394
The Young Drivers Challenge that we did in the Dalkeith Ward, numerous endless activities and actions that I've been involved in personally that the vast majority of that experience has been incredibly rewarding and enriching for me.
00:42:23.414 --> 00:42:45.597
And behind that is the extraordinary, Jim, and you know this as much as anyone in the church, any level, the extraordinary love and kindness and sacrifice and caring and commitment and devotion and service, again, that the members provide.
00:42:45.730 --> 00:42:55.143
commit and devote on a very personal level to help others, often without reward, almost always without reward.
00:42:55.925 --> 00:42:57.507
People don't get paid.
00:42:57.547 --> 00:42:59.190
The members don't get paid to do this.
00:43:00.431 --> 00:43:02.173
We're a volunteer.
00:43:02.193 --> 00:43:05.900
I use the word we because I still feel part of the church in many ways.
00:43:05.940 --> 00:43:29.463
We're a volunteer organization, and we rely almost entirely on the kindness of and the volunteerism of the members who give an extraordinary amount of time and energy and resources to support the church and to help and support each other across a range of challenges and issues.
00:43:30.503 --> 00:43:39.713
And I just want to just touch upon that briefly because this experience I want to share with you is, for me at least, describes the...
00:43:40.385 --> 00:43:47.713
extraordinary uniqueness and distinction of the church in how the members can bless our lives at a very personal level.
00:43:48.173 --> 00:43:51.838
I mentioned earlier that when I joined the church, I was in a pretty bad shape emotionally.
00:43:51.878 --> 00:43:56.443
I've shared a bit more of that detail on earlier podcasts.
00:43:57.264 --> 00:44:13.509
A few moments ago, I shared that the incredible value and importance to me of friendships during the church, people actually interested in who I was and me thinking, yeah, why are they so interested?
00:44:13.528 --> 00:44:24.219
And I'm really not worth that much because are my worth more than what I think I am because they're interested in being my friend.
00:44:24.280 --> 00:44:33.128
And it was a very interesting transitional, emotional, spiritual time in my life.
00:44:33.750 --> 00:44:39.534
But there was one, I mentioned that there was a leader, a youth leader that said, Bless my life.
00:44:39.574 --> 00:44:41.797
And I want to mention him by name because he's a wonderful man.
00:44:41.838 --> 00:44:43.800
And I hope he one day he might listen to this.
00:44:44.340 --> 00:44:46.322
His name was Dave Makings, David Makings.
00:44:46.402 --> 00:44:47.784
And he was the young men's advisor.
00:44:47.824 --> 00:44:58.637
And he recognized that I was troubled and that I had these questions about my life and my direction and how I felt about myself.
00:44:59.358 --> 00:45:35.625
And he would actually spend more time with me than the others he would sit down with me and talk and uh he'd sit down uh you know he asked me about my you know i was embarking on a college uh program at the time he was very interested in me about my uh serving a mission uh interested about uh me in terms of my self-esteem self-confidence he was a wonderful uh individual he was a sales manager actually of a um a very successful company that I work for.
00:45:35.664 --> 00:45:41.652
And he had an abundance of leadership skills, a great communicator, a wonderful leader.
00:45:41.672 --> 00:45:54.827
I think he became a bishop in another ward, but a wonderful man that was really interested in people and genuinely interested in actually building people, helping people feel good.
00:45:55.208 --> 00:46:00.034
And he took an interest in me and he was just...
00:46:00.418 --> 00:46:14.099
the first few conversations I find it very difficult to open up, but over time, over a few months of doing activities and him organizing the activities and the events in MIA and, you know, lots of new memories, lots of fun, you know, physical activities.
00:46:14.179 --> 00:46:17.503
And he was also very good at building, doing workshops as well.
00:46:17.583 --> 00:46:20.789
Jimmy did a lot of team building workshops with, with the youth.
00:46:21.469 --> 00:46:31.657
Instead of just doing like a regular program, it was very much about developing, um, What was later described as the SPEC program, if you remember that.
00:46:31.737 --> 00:46:39.826
So the SPEC program and the U program, probably 15 years ago, was spiritual, physical, educational, and community or citizenship.
00:46:40.106 --> 00:46:40.827
I'm trying to remember.
00:46:41.186 --> 00:46:43.228
Spiritual, physical, emotional.
00:46:45.592 --> 00:46:47.193
What was it?
00:46:47.253 --> 00:46:48.153
I thought it was educational.
00:46:48.193 --> 00:46:52.998
But anyway, he kind of practiced that way, way back, you know, when I was growing up.
00:46:53.539 --> 00:46:55.400
So he was very good at...
00:46:57.090 --> 00:47:05.266
talking about how we develop our professional skills or educational knowledge and skills and having a desire to go get an education.
00:47:05.306 --> 00:47:06.789
You know, Ian, go get a degree.
00:47:06.809 --> 00:47:07.371
You can do this.
00:47:08.032 --> 00:47:12.541
He was the first person to say to me at that time, Ian, you can do this.
00:47:13.442 --> 00:47:15.443
You really can be what you want to be.
00:47:15.483 --> 00:47:19.309
If you put your mind to it and you put your work in, you can pass college.
00:47:19.329 --> 00:47:25.976
Because I had so many doubts, so many second guesses, and so many questions about myself and whether I could do something or not.
00:47:26.016 --> 00:47:30.682
And this inner voice that said, Ian, you can't do this.
00:47:30.963 --> 00:47:32.385
It's not who you are.
00:47:32.425 --> 00:47:36.650
And that was almost my entire experience before joining the church.
00:47:36.989 --> 00:47:38.873
But Dave Makins, he was different.
00:47:39.592 --> 00:47:40.675
He said, Ian, you can do this.
00:47:41.335 --> 00:47:42.197
You can be successful.
00:47:42.657 --> 00:47:43.217
What do you want to do?
00:47:43.746 --> 00:47:44.567
How are you going to get there?
00:47:44.706 --> 00:47:45.487
What's your strategy?
00:47:46.228 --> 00:47:47.690
And it got me thinking.
00:47:47.751 --> 00:47:52.295
And I said, Dave, I don't know if I could do this, this college thing.
00:47:53.277 --> 00:47:56.061
And the mission, I said, they want me to serve a mission.
00:47:56.101 --> 00:47:58.563
And he said, well, how do you feel about that?
00:47:58.603 --> 00:47:59.806
What's your relationship with God?
00:47:59.846 --> 00:48:07.414
So he got to the very core of who I was, the very issues and problems that I was going through.
00:48:07.554 --> 00:48:08.817
He listened, he asked questions.
00:48:09.677 --> 00:48:12.041
And we talked about the church and the teaching, the doctrine.
00:48:12.081 --> 00:48:12.862
And by the way, he...
00:48:13.313 --> 00:48:26.811
was the first person that actually taught me more than a song, which is very important, more than a lesson, that I was a child of God and I was worth something.
00:48:28.092 --> 00:48:35.103
And God actually cared for me and was interested in me and that my life had some purpose, some meaning.
00:48:36.244 --> 00:48:40.128
And Dave was the first person to have that conversation with me.
00:48:40.994 --> 00:48:46.663
And to remind me that I wasn't worthless, that I had value, that I could achieve great things.
00:48:46.963 --> 00:48:49.427
And I could do that in the gospel of Jesus Christ.
00:48:49.487 --> 00:48:51.630
I could go to college.
00:48:51.650 --> 00:48:52.550
I could be successful.
00:48:52.731 --> 00:48:53.853
I could get a good job.
00:48:54.014 --> 00:48:55.496
I could provide for myself.
00:48:56.376 --> 00:48:57.818
I could serve in the church.
00:48:58.300 --> 00:49:06.052
He always said that when I'm stronger, that the Lord would require me to help others.
00:49:06.092 --> 00:49:09.556
He said, Ian, when you get into a position where you...
00:49:10.177 --> 00:49:18.327
are on higher ground spiritually and you feel you've got your confidence and your self-esteem, what do you think the Lord wants you to do from there on?
00:49:18.347 --> 00:49:22.010
And I was like, I said, help others.
00:49:22.050 --> 00:49:23.432
He said, exactly, that's what it's about.
00:49:24.534 --> 00:49:34.806
And he shared with me some of his challenges that he experienced as a youth and similar challenges in terms of confidence and self-esteem.
00:49:34.846 --> 00:49:43.228
So it was interesting that he'd gone through a similar experience as I did at that age, you know, 16, 17, 18 years old, et cetera.
00:49:43.248 --> 00:49:48.054
And I don't think I was the only one at that time that felt lost.
00:49:48.155 --> 00:49:56.766
I think, you know, youth, even today, of course, you know, we all go through those experiences where it can be quite intense and you're wondering, you know, what are you going to do for college?
00:49:56.806 --> 00:49:57.728
Or what about your job?
00:49:57.788 --> 00:49:58.829
And where's your life going?
00:49:58.869 --> 00:50:04.436
And I think a lot of young people even today, feel that pressure, right?
00:50:04.516 --> 00:50:06.798
That stress of, you know, what are you doing with life?
00:50:06.838 --> 00:50:12.525
And your friends are going off doing great things and you're like, my goodness, they seem to have that direction and purpose.
00:50:12.585 --> 00:50:17.130
I was very much at all these questions, but Dave Makings was amazing.
00:50:17.190 --> 00:50:21.717
He was, I just felt so blessed to have him in my life.
00:50:21.976 --> 00:50:28.043
And he is the epitome, Jim, of the members in the church, most of the members.
00:50:28.744 --> 00:50:35.072
There is a small difference minority, a small-minded minority in the church that spoil it for others.
00:50:36.295 --> 00:50:43.105
They question, they doubt, and they focus nitpicking on some of the negative.
00:50:44.045 --> 00:50:46.028
That's not been my experience, mostly.
00:50:46.128 --> 00:50:53.800
My experience of the members serving in those different capacities, the members are just the most amazing people on the planet.
00:50:54.001 --> 00:50:54.561
They really are.
00:50:54.581 --> 00:50:56.244
They care for each other.
00:50:56.425 --> 00:50:58.547
I'm not saying they don't talk or gossip about each other.
00:50:58.628 --> 00:51:06.186
I don't know any organization corporate, professional, charity, religious, that doesn't have that gossip element.
00:51:06.505 --> 00:51:11.012
That's something that we have to deal with all the time in the church.
00:51:11.132 --> 00:51:12.793
We're no different than any other organization.
00:51:12.994 --> 00:51:16.097
We all talk about each other positively, negatively.
00:51:16.318 --> 00:51:17.920
That's just human nature.
00:51:18.041 --> 00:51:20.284
We have to have a handle on that.
00:51:21.164 --> 00:51:24.670
We have to learn from Christ and we have to learn from the teachings.
00:51:24.929 --> 00:51:39.268
Whatever religion that we're in, try to look for the good in people And of course, it's important to have those conversations and to openly express our concerns with, if we see an individual's behavior, that's inappropriate.
00:51:39.307 --> 00:51:40.289
We have to address that.
00:51:40.329 --> 00:51:42.351
And we don't have to like everyone.
00:51:42.391 --> 00:51:45.032
We're required to love everyone.
00:51:45.054 --> 00:51:46.315
We don't have to like everyone.
00:51:46.335 --> 00:51:48.416
We're commanded to love each other.
00:51:48.436 --> 00:51:49.838
We're not commanded to like each other.
00:51:50.297 --> 00:51:51.380
But we have to work together.
00:51:51.420 --> 00:51:54.262
And we have to work together in the church for a common good.
00:51:54.322 --> 00:51:56.824
And if you look at your work, there are people at work that you probably don't like.
00:51:58.402 --> 00:52:02.827
you know, every organization, there are people that don't like each other, but they have to work together, you know, professionals.
00:52:03.349 --> 00:52:04.309
In the church, it's the same.
00:52:04.329 --> 00:52:15.324
You put together in these callings and you are required to work together for a common good, a common purpose, to help them bless the lives of your quorum or your auxiliary or if you're a bishop, you know, the ward.
00:52:16.065 --> 00:52:22.875
And hopefully in that experience that you learn and grow and you see the qualities and attributes of the people that you're serving with.
00:52:23.496 --> 00:52:35.998
And so the church is at its greatest strength and continues to be at its greatest through the extraordinary service and kindness and love of its members.
00:52:37.740 --> 00:52:52.824
And it's an incredibly powerful, in my opinion, the most important part of the church is the goodness that exists and continue to exist and grow in many ways within the members of the church.
00:52:53.724 --> 00:53:14.681
And I am incredibly grateful That the church organization, the structure of the church, how it's organized, allowed me, bless my life, to be able to work with others in all kinds of capacities for the benefit of others.
00:53:14.762 --> 00:53:23.818
And in fact, that service and commitment that I devoted, like so many members do, actually came back at me and blessed my life.
00:53:24.833 --> 00:53:34.621
And that's the scriptures, that's the teaching that if you serve others, if you serve and you serve God, you're actually always in debt because you get the blessings.
00:53:35.362 --> 00:53:40.733
So you go out, you sacrifice, you serve, you put the time in, do it through love, do it properly.
00:53:40.773 --> 00:53:50.054
Try not to do it through duty necessarily or guilt or a sense of duty or responsibility, although they're not necessarily bad things.
00:53:50.135 --> 00:53:54.224
The guilt thing is another conversation about why we serve.
00:53:55.266 --> 00:53:58.831
We should serve because we care, we love, and I believe most members do that.
00:53:59.532 --> 00:54:05.824
And when we do that, we work together as a team in that auxiliary and bless the lives of individuals.
00:54:06.284 --> 00:54:07.266
And just a quick story.
00:54:07.626 --> 00:54:19.195
I remember, I think I shared on an early podcast that when I decided to serve a mission, I went to my company boss and told him that I was going to serve this Mormon mission for the Mormon church.
00:54:19.295 --> 00:54:22.380
And he thought I was the most weirdest individual, very angry.
00:54:22.402 --> 00:54:24.063
They'd invested quite a bit of training in me.
00:54:24.143 --> 00:54:28.311
And I was being relatively successful in that technical role.
00:54:29.072 --> 00:54:36.706
And then time came to put my papers in and got called to Scotland.
00:54:37.538 --> 00:54:42.465
And then met with my, I think I had about six weeks before I left to go to Scotland.
00:54:42.485 --> 00:54:51.237
So I got my, I think I got my papers in November 86 or December 86 in January, end of January is when I was heading to the London MPC.
00:54:51.717 --> 00:54:58.106
So that was the time when I got the call to Scotland to go sit down with my boss and tell him, hey, you know, I'm staying with the company.
00:54:58.126 --> 00:54:59.829
I'm going on this Mormon mission.
00:54:59.849 --> 00:55:02.472
They knew I was a member of the church, but didn't show any interest in that.
00:55:02.492 --> 00:55:06.318
And then I, and then I told him the news and he fired me on the spot.
00:55:06.498 --> 00:55:08.862
As I mentioned earlier in the podcast, I was quite shocked.
00:55:08.882 --> 00:55:15.190
I remember going to my desk and seeing it on the movies where you put all your stuff into a box and then you walk.
00:55:15.711 --> 00:55:17.474
I had a company car, so I had no company car.
00:55:17.494 --> 00:55:20.438
And I walked to the bus stop with this cardboard box with my stuff in.
00:55:21.561 --> 00:55:23.023
I felt absolutely numb.
00:55:23.543 --> 00:55:24.666
But anyway, that was the situation.
00:55:24.885 --> 00:55:29.452
But what happened, I had this two months, six weeks or so before I went to Scotland.
00:55:29.954 --> 00:55:47.838
And the bishop there, Bishop Wainwright, amazing leader, and Doris Carlton, who's the lady that is the family member who allowed me to live with them after I was thrown out of my home and joined the church.
00:55:47.898 --> 00:55:54.726
And Doris was wonderful, and Colin, wonderful people who allowed me to stay with their family for a while.
00:55:55.748 --> 00:55:56.750
And then, so...
00:55:57.057 --> 00:56:07.523
this time I had before I went to Scotland, the Bishop Wainwright said, well, look, we need you to work with, we'd like you to work with the Relief Society person who was Doris, so I knew Doris very well.
00:56:08.146 --> 00:56:14.048
And then we, the job was to drive Doris to Sheffield, which is another stake.
00:56:14.590 --> 00:56:15.791
And it was the Bishop's Storehouse.
00:56:16.291 --> 00:56:21.476
And we were, there's like a mini supermarket underneath the foundations of that building in Sheffield.
00:56:21.956 --> 00:56:29.302
And we would push it like a trolley, as they call it in UK, a shopping cart around that supermarket kind of thing.
00:56:29.422 --> 00:56:36.509
And we would then collect food for members in the ward, in the ward that I was in at the time, in the Huddersfield stake.
00:56:36.708 --> 00:56:40.391
And we would collect all that food for about 20 families, Jim.
00:56:40.431 --> 00:56:49.621
And these are families who were struggling financially, who were on welfare, who the bishop had identified as being in need.
00:56:50.181 --> 00:56:53.666
And I worked for six weeks before I came to Scotland with Doris.
00:56:54.407 --> 00:56:56.128
And it was like a weekly thing.
00:56:56.148 --> 00:56:59.012
And I did the driving and I put the stuff into the cart.
00:56:59.411 --> 00:57:04.436
And then we would deliver parcels of food to those members who were in need.
00:57:05.057 --> 00:57:14.697
And it was amazing to be able to see their faces when we knocked on the door and say, hey, here, we've got you some provisions.
00:57:14.757 --> 00:57:15.637
So I've got you some food.
00:57:15.958 --> 00:57:19.346
And these were fairly big boxes.
00:57:19.365 --> 00:57:21.789
There were sometimes two or three boxes because they were families.
00:57:22.731 --> 00:57:57.581
And so I did that for six weeks and did it under the pretext organization of doris who was very organized way more organized than i was and that's what we did and again another um incredible aspect of love and kindness leadership from bishop wainwright to be able to organize that put that food together take it to the families who didn't have much and to see their faces and um emotional in tears they couldn't believe it when they receive that.
00:57:57.681 --> 00:57:58.963
So these are...
00:57:59.724 --> 00:58:01.467
And we could go on forever.
00:58:01.487 --> 00:58:02.969
The podcast is not long enough, frankly.
00:58:03.010 --> 00:58:19.034
But the list of qualities and attributes and blessings that the church, through its organization and through its members, that it continues to provide and deliver to its members is just extraordinary.
00:58:19.074 --> 00:58:23.021
And I could talk all day, frankly, about so many...
00:58:23.521 --> 00:58:25.244
wonderful experiences like that.
00:58:25.264 --> 00:58:27.126
And I've shared, you know, a couple of insights.
00:58:27.547 --> 00:58:45.907
And just in kind of wrapping up my thoughts here at this stage in that conversation, these experiences, Jim, for me, who has gone through all that personal, emotional changes, the interest from the leaders, the support from the leaders, the belief in me that I could be something that I, you know, more than I thought I was of myself.
00:58:46.648 --> 00:58:53.983
And then to provide It's not enough, I think, just to have the word, the conversation, someone sitting in front of you and saying, hey, you can do these things.
00:58:54.764 --> 00:58:55.625
You have to do it.
00:58:55.865 --> 00:59:00.552
You have to get up, get your ass off, you know, the seat, right?
00:59:01.715 --> 00:59:03.538
Get out there and serve.
00:59:04.179 --> 00:59:09.547
And in that service, and this is the thing that saved me, that changed me.
00:59:09.588 --> 00:59:14.856
In that acting on the advising council that I got, Ian, you can do it.
00:59:15.356 --> 00:59:15.938
Now go do it.
00:59:16.353 --> 00:59:21.219
these are the things that you need to do to change how you feel about yourself and have some purpose and meaning in life.
00:59:21.699 --> 00:59:23.340
Here's, you know, you do it through service.
00:59:24.041 --> 00:59:30.047
You go help others and you don't have to wait to be saved to go save someone else.
00:59:30.748 --> 00:59:33.090
The saving of someone else is what actually saves you.
00:59:33.130 --> 00:59:34.831
And that's what happened to me.
00:59:34.891 --> 00:59:40.978
So I'm not anywhere near healed at this stage, you know, with, you know, 17, 18 years old.
00:59:42.679 --> 00:59:56.588
But all those service services, opportunities that I had to help others actually was the thing that healed me, that changed me, that transformed me, that gave me purpose and gave me self-esteem, gave me some confidence.
00:59:57.047 --> 00:59:59.391
I was thought, wow, I can do this.
00:59:59.592 --> 01:00:01.014
I can actually help someone.
01:00:01.034 --> 01:00:02.956
I didn't think I could help anyone.
01:00:02.996 --> 01:00:05.101
I couldn't even help myself in certain areas.
01:00:06.001 --> 01:00:07.724
And then people thought, Ian, thank you.
01:00:07.764 --> 01:00:10.809
And I'm like, wow, I can actually, I can do this.
01:00:11.650 --> 01:00:18.480
And when you start to learn that you can do it yourself without, you know, someone can say they believe in you and you can do it.
01:00:18.519 --> 01:00:19.742
That's one thing that's important.
01:00:20.141 --> 01:00:29.775
But when you see it and you experience it yourself, that you can actually achieve certain things and help others and be successful.
01:00:30.617 --> 01:00:30.878
Yeah.
01:00:31.010 --> 01:00:32.211
in helping others.
01:00:32.853 --> 01:00:35.980
And you see how that transforms their lives and how grateful they are.
01:00:36.019 --> 01:00:39.146
It was, it was, there were times I cried.
01:00:39.166 --> 01:00:45.398
I, you know, I'd been bed at night, I'd pray and I'd cry and I'd open my heart and I would be so grateful.
01:00:45.980 --> 01:00:53.869
And I felt the spirit and I believe the spirit and I still feel that same spirit today is, you know, when I serve and give of others, that's a universal spirit.
01:00:53.949 --> 01:01:11.856
I don't think that's necessarily unique to the church, but that's the thing, Jim, that transformed me that, you know, the church was the vehicle, the structure, the organization, the members and commitment, devotion, um, provided the, um, the leadership, the support, the direction, the experience for someone like me.
01:01:11.876 --> 01:01:22.744
And then the doing bit, the service bit was the thing that, um, had a, extraordinary impact to me and the spirituality that came from that.
01:01:23.364 --> 01:01:28.010
And then it affects how you feel about yourself, what you think about yourself.
01:01:28.811 --> 01:01:32.076
And you start to feel you've got worth and value.
01:01:32.135 --> 01:01:37.523
And then you realize that you're a child of God, that you've got this value, this purpose.
01:01:38.023 --> 01:01:44.793
And so the church does that, all of that that I've tried to communicate.
01:01:44.833 --> 01:01:55.405
And it's difficult for me to articulate and communicate these things because they're very, you know, they're quite emotional for me and it's difficult for me to describe that in words.
01:01:56.447 --> 01:02:19.123
You have to experience it yourself and I know you have, but I would say that is one area of, in my opinion, the most significant area that the church does, continues to do and I'm so, so grateful for all the members in the church, past and present, who have had an extraordinary experience impact on my life.
01:02:19.764 --> 01:02:20.664
I haven't forgotten them.
01:02:20.724 --> 01:02:21.827
I hope they haven't forgotten me.
01:02:22.067 --> 01:02:23.268
I certainly haven't forgotten them.
01:02:23.289 --> 01:02:32.579
And these impressions, these spiritual, spiritual experience lead this indelible, um, eternal, not just in this life, but internal impression upon our various souls.
01:02:33.000 --> 01:02:35.342
And I will never forget these things.
01:02:35.864 --> 01:02:36.784
I don't want to forget them.
01:02:37.146 --> 01:02:38.286
I will always remember them.
01:02:38.606 --> 01:02:39.588
I remember them often.
01:02:39.628 --> 01:02:43.713
And, um, they have transformed my life.
01:02:43.733 --> 01:02:56.266
So I, you know, I, These are the extraordinary blessings that the church brings into people's lives.
01:02:56.487 --> 01:03:09.463
And I just want our listeners to, I know they know that already, but I just want to, even though I'm out of the church, I cannot and will not ever forget or let go of those experiences.
01:03:09.722 --> 01:03:15.190
It's who I am, it's who I want to be, and it shaped the very core of my being and my soul.
01:03:16.898 --> 01:03:20.923
I think those are great last words here for this podcast.
01:03:21.023 --> 01:03:22.525
I think that sums it up nicely.
01:03:22.545 --> 01:03:25.068
I agree with everything you said.
01:03:25.088 --> 01:03:27.172
I really appreciate all of those stories.
01:03:28.233 --> 01:03:33.981
And I'm just so grateful that we get a chance to talk about this kind of thing.
01:03:35.443 --> 01:03:42.534
I just think it's really important that we step back every once in a while and recognize why it is we're doing this.
01:03:43.489 --> 01:03:49.237
Why it is we talk about the church, why it is that we're so focused on this, it's because we love this church.
01:03:50.239 --> 01:03:52.681
It's because this church has blessed our lives.
01:03:52.762 --> 01:03:55.105
This church is a force for good.
01:03:55.144 --> 01:04:01.512
And so I'm very grateful to hear those stories and to share that with you.
01:04:01.753 --> 01:04:11.525
And I'm very grateful to everybody who takes the time to listen to us every week, to hear these stories, because it helps us more than you know.
01:04:11.905 --> 01:04:19.673
The feedback that we get from you just, it just means more to us than you know.
01:04:19.693 --> 01:04:22.155
I don't know how to describe it, but I'm so grateful for it.
01:04:23.097 --> 01:04:29.722
So with that, Ian, do you have any other parting or summation words?
01:04:30.664 --> 01:04:31.284
I don't.
01:04:31.485 --> 01:04:31.784
I don't.
01:04:31.965 --> 01:04:34.007
And I also want to say I want to thank you.
01:04:34.068 --> 01:04:36.050
And I just really appreciate this conversation.
01:04:36.070 --> 01:04:39.152
And I hope to have many more conversations like this as well.
01:04:39.213 --> 01:04:44.918
Because as I said earlier, There's so many great things that the church does, and we forget that.
01:04:44.938 --> 01:04:49.847
It's got all these challenges and problems, but it does so many great things, and I'm so grateful.
01:04:50.268 --> 01:04:51.610
And I want the church to improve.
01:04:51.952 --> 01:04:52.853
I don't want it to go away.
01:04:52.893 --> 01:04:56.586
The things I described, I want it to grow.
01:04:56.806 --> 01:05:00.110
I want all of what I've described to grow and expand and continue.
01:05:00.210 --> 01:05:02.032
I know you can get that in other churches and I get that.
01:05:02.572 --> 01:05:08.577
So I want the church to thrive in a very positive, in a very inclusive, in a very constructive way.
01:05:08.998 --> 01:05:11.380
So I'm very, very grateful to you, Jim, for having these conversations.
01:05:11.500 --> 01:05:15.463
As I said, you know, we've got a long, long list of wonderful experiences in the church.
01:05:16.083 --> 01:05:17.045
I'm grateful to our listeners.
01:05:18.005 --> 01:05:21.768
We appreciate you, all of you out there listening to us and being patient with us.
01:05:21.829 --> 01:05:22.228
Thank you.
01:05:22.248 --> 01:05:32.108
And we are excited to share these experiences And we look forward to seeing you or being with you next week from Jim and I on Inside Out.
01:05:32.248 --> 01:05:33.150
Thank you for joining us.
01:05:34.293 --> 01:05:34.835
God bless.
01:05:34.956 --> 01:05:36.239
Love to you all.
01:05:36.981 --> 01:05:37.521
Thank you, Jim.
01:05:38.103 --> 01:05:40.829
Thank you, Ian.
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:18.402
Hello and welcome to the latest episode of Inside Out.
00:00:18.643 --> 00:00:26.592
My name is Ian Wilkes and I'm here with the most delightful, stupendous and handsome Mr.
00:00:26.652 --> 00:00:26.993
Bennett.
00:00:28.513 --> 00:00:33.918
We're lucky this is an audio podcast, so they don't know how much you're lying on the handsome part.
00:00:34.740 --> 00:00:47.493
Well, I put my piece into AI, and honestly, it struggled a bit, but it came up with a limit to technology, right, of what AI can do with people's handsome looks.
00:00:47.552 --> 00:00:51.396
But it came back and said, we can't improve upon this handsome fella.
00:00:51.597 --> 00:00:54.780
So I think we've reached the limit of AI.
00:00:54.820 --> 00:00:55.942
You're that handsome.
00:00:56.417 --> 00:00:59.042
I certainly am capable of breaking AI.
00:00:59.942 --> 00:01:01.204
I'm happy to admit that.
00:01:01.646 --> 00:01:06.893
Anyway, it's wonderful to be with you and excited to have this conversation.
00:01:06.933 --> 00:01:09.477
I've just been away in Mexico.
00:01:09.496 --> 00:01:15.286
I went also to another city in Calgary, so we're a little bit late this week on the podcast.
00:01:15.305 --> 00:01:17.649
We want to thank our listeners for being incredibly patient.
00:01:18.209 --> 00:01:21.314
We do our best to organize and structure our podcasts.
00:01:21.894 --> 00:01:23.337
There's a preparation involved.
00:01:23.841 --> 00:01:30.034
And so we thank you for your patience in terms of getting the next podcast, this podcast that we're about to do, getting this one out.
00:01:30.817 --> 00:01:40.947
Very excited about this podcast because as I was flying up from Mexico, I was thinking about what some of the topics we could be discussing.
00:01:41.388 --> 00:01:51.920
And the one thing that kept coming back to me quite frequently, and it's probably because I was away and relaxed with my family and feeling all kind of, you know, always stress-free and quite positive.
00:01:52.379 --> 00:02:04.406
I was thinking and reflecting upon, and actually I had conversations with my family on this, thinking and reflecting upon all of the blessings that the church had brought into my life.
00:02:05.287 --> 00:02:13.878
From the time that I was investigating the church, the teaching, learning experiences as I was investigating the church, joining the church was challenging.
00:02:13.919 --> 00:02:21.348
But going forward, after the first few weeks and months of joining the church, my life transformed, improved.
00:02:21.889 --> 00:02:22.711
I met new friends.
00:02:24.574 --> 00:02:27.677
My life had a sense of purpose and meaning which I didn't have before.
00:02:28.449 --> 00:02:39.503
And I would say for the most part, almost the entire experience or most of the experience in the church was extremely positive to me.
00:02:39.544 --> 00:02:46.692
And I was thinking about we could do a conversation on the many, many qualities and attributes of the church.
00:02:47.633 --> 00:02:53.980
And by way of context, which and context is very, very important.
00:02:54.818 --> 00:03:14.510
The church, as you know, Jim, is facing many challenges, continues to face many challenges, has faced many challenges around policy, doctrine, history, leadership, women in the church, LGBTQ, tax, finance, tithing.
00:03:14.531 --> 00:03:20.920
There seems to be an endless list of issues and problems and challenges with the church.
00:03:21.602 --> 00:03:25.787
And we've covered some of those topics over the last couple of years or so.
00:03:25.806 --> 00:03:37.522
Notwithstanding, there are many, many qualities that the church brings to the world and to the members.
00:03:38.283 --> 00:03:42.990
And I've made just a bit of a list here, and I've made my own list.
00:03:43.510 --> 00:03:47.764
But what I thought we'd do, instead of me kind of reeling them off all the qualities.
00:03:47.783 --> 00:03:58.935
I thought you and I could go back and forward and just kind of highlight some of the qualities, attributes, and the blessings that the church has actually brought into your life and into my life.
00:03:59.694 --> 00:04:33.517
00:04:34.759 --> 00:04:49.560
And I think about the blessings from the church and how the church teachings and the culture of the church, the positive teachings, elements of the church actually changed all of those things that I've just mentioned.
00:04:50.261 --> 00:05:01.795
And I think the first thing I could highlight with the church that I felt from the very first time I met the Mormon missionaries and started getting to know some of the members was a sense of friendship.
00:05:04.319 --> 00:06:16.742
00:06:17.744 --> 00:06:21.288
And I really felt that almost from day one.
00:06:21.749 --> 00:06:29.016
And so when I went to church and I went into the youth program, and the youth leaders were extraordinary, they were interested in me.
00:06:29.297 --> 00:06:33.982
And I remember sitting down with the, they called it MIA back then.
00:06:34.850 --> 00:06:36.211
MIA member, right?
00:06:36.872 --> 00:06:40.197
And so you had these, you know, I got baptized.
00:06:40.218 --> 00:06:42.781
I had these interview with the, with the branch president at the time.
00:06:42.822 --> 00:06:43.903
It was really interested in me.
00:06:43.944 --> 00:06:47.069
And I was amazed that they were interested in me and my life.
00:06:48.050 --> 00:06:53.437
And I sat down with one of the youth leaders and they asked me about what I want to do with the rest of my life and where do I want to go?
00:06:53.559 --> 00:06:58.125
And it was my work or, you know, I want to go to college.
00:06:58.185 --> 00:07:02.271
And, and so these are questions that I'd never, never, no one had ever asked me before.
00:07:03.533 --> 00:07:03.613
Yeah.
00:07:03.745 --> 00:07:06.730
And so it was a completely different experience.
00:07:06.870 --> 00:07:13.838
And the person that was with me, the youth leader was with me, was just very genuine.
00:07:14.338 --> 00:07:15.279
There's a wonderful spirit.
00:07:15.800 --> 00:07:24.130
And I felt I'd come home and I felt I'd made these new friends and that actually in many ways saved me.
00:07:25.512 --> 00:07:32.161
And I will be forever grateful about these new friends that accepted me for who I was, was interested in me.
00:07:32.898 --> 00:07:35.682
And especially at a time where I needed that.
00:07:35.742 --> 00:07:36.863
And I've never forgotten that.
00:07:37.925 --> 00:07:39.927
And so I think about this actually often.
00:07:40.108 --> 00:07:53.305
I miss many of my friends in the church who have, I think, maybe decided that because I'm not active in the church, that the friendship is probably compromised, which kind of sad breaks my heart in a way.
00:07:54.427 --> 00:07:59.394
But I still retain, you know, obviously quite a few friends, you know, in the church, some at least.
00:08:00.255 --> 00:08:01.177
But that was the...
00:08:01.826 --> 00:08:10.699
One of the first amazing blessings and experiences in my life, and I am grateful to the church for that.
00:08:11.680 --> 00:08:17.889
I can think of many, many other qualities and attributes of the church, but I also want to pass this over to you and ask you...
00:08:20.865 --> 00:08:23.269
How has the church blessed your life over the years?
00:08:23.629 --> 00:08:25.250
You've been in the church your entire life.
00:08:25.290 --> 00:08:31.257
You've had extraordinary parents who've done a wonderful job raising all of you as family members.
00:08:31.298 --> 00:08:52.820
In contrast to my non-functioning family, frankly, very non-functioning, and I'd say dysfunctional family, you had a high-functioning family, wonderful relationships, and a very different youth and experience growing up in the church and a different experience to mine.
00:08:53.259 --> 00:09:10.047
Could you share with me one of your earliest thoughts where you connected the church's teachings, the experience in the church, et cetera, to a very important blessing that came into your life at the early stage of your life?
00:09:10.126 --> 00:09:15.195
And you thought, my goodness, how grateful that you are to be in the church because of this particular blessing.
00:09:15.235 --> 00:09:16.857
Could you think of one?
00:09:18.114 --> 00:09:21.798
My goodness, I had not thought to go there.
00:09:21.837 --> 00:09:26.261
And now, as you say that, something just leaps to mind.
00:09:27.644 --> 00:09:38.134
So I grew up in Southern California, and back in the day, they used to do big, huge pageants in the church.
00:09:38.914 --> 00:09:41.778
We've sort of discontinued some of that, and that makes me sad.
00:09:41.798 --> 00:09:43.659
I think we've discontinued pretty much all of them.
00:09:44.620 --> 00:09:48.255
You know, they had the Hill Cumorah pageant in New York.
00:09:49.277 --> 00:09:55.683
They had some pageant, which I've never seen, but it was down by the Manti Temple.
00:09:55.703 --> 00:10:02.070
And at one point they did a pageant called Third Nephi.
00:10:03.610 --> 00:10:10.018
It was a musical and it was essentially a dramatization of the story of Third Nephi.
00:10:10.038 --> 00:10:14.261
And on this occasion, I was 11 years old.
00:10:15.618 --> 00:10:28.135
And my aunt lived in Westwood, California, and she was assigned to gather children who would play the Nephite children waiting for Christ to come.
00:10:28.176 --> 00:10:38.431
And we were in Los Angeles, and I was already sort of a budding thespian.
00:10:38.471 --> 00:10:41.195
And she says, and you'll get paid.
00:10:41.215 --> 00:10:43.096
It's a paid position.
00:10:43.970 --> 00:10:48.193
I got paid for the entire run of the show.
00:10:48.214 --> 00:10:51.057
I got paid a whopping$5.
00:10:51.977 --> 00:10:57.082
And that just meant the world to me.
00:10:57.263 --> 00:10:59.625
I was like, aha, I'm a paid actor now.
00:10:59.845 --> 00:11:00.426
I've made it.
00:11:00.446 --> 00:11:01.167
I've arrived.
00:11:02.207 --> 00:11:04.909
Anyway, we did this show.
00:11:04.929 --> 00:11:12.717
And I don't even think I saw it because I was backstage.
00:11:13.601 --> 00:11:20.491
for most of it, so I don't even know the bulk of it, but we were taught two songs to sing in the show.
00:11:21.854 --> 00:11:26.801
One of them is a song that has since been included in the children's hymn book.
00:11:27.743 --> 00:11:29.846
It's called I Feel My Savior's Love.
00:11:29.966 --> 00:11:32.448
Are you familiar with I Feel My Savior's Love?
00:11:32.490 --> 00:11:37.876
And this came from this pageant.
00:11:37.917 --> 00:11:39.219
It was written for this pageant.
00:11:40.620 --> 00:11:47.898
And There was another song called The Love of God, which I'm foreshadowing the end of the story.
00:11:47.957 --> 00:11:54.946
But for a very long time, I had not heard since the time that I did the show.
00:11:54.985 --> 00:11:58.470
And it goes something like, The love of God leads me on.
00:11:58.490 --> 00:12:00.652
His precious love fills my song.
00:12:00.692 --> 00:12:01.774
His love is pure.
00:12:01.793 --> 00:12:04.476
How freely it comes that we may all be one.
00:12:04.496 --> 00:12:06.499
I just remember snippets of it.
00:12:06.538 --> 00:12:07.580
I don't remember the whole thing.
00:12:08.520 --> 00:12:08.841
Anyway.
00:12:09.826 --> 00:12:18.738
We were doing this and I have always sort of felt connections to the divine through music.
00:12:19.578 --> 00:12:29.572
And it's one of the reasons why the Tabernacle Choir is so special to me is because I feel that connection every time I go to a Tabernacle Choir rehearsal.
00:12:30.312 --> 00:12:35.120
Every time I have an opportunity to sing just beautiful music with talented spiritual people.
00:12:35.159 --> 00:12:41.730
And it's It's how I connect, and it sort of is rooted in this experience.
00:12:42.572 --> 00:12:50.682
So I remember just the first time the show was put on in the Shrine Auditorium.
00:12:52.144 --> 00:12:55.109
The Academy Awards had been held in the Shrine Auditorium.
00:12:55.188 --> 00:12:57.591
It's just this big, massive space.
00:12:58.653 --> 00:13:02.097
What's very funny is it's right next to the University of Southern California.
00:13:02.594 --> 00:13:06.480
When I was 11 years old, my mother said, would you go to the Shrine Auditorium?
00:13:06.679 --> 00:13:09.504
Whatever you do, do not go outside.
00:13:09.544 --> 00:13:12.809
This is the roughest area in the whole world.
00:13:12.850 --> 00:13:14.192
There are gangs.
00:13:14.852 --> 00:13:18.720
You're going to be killed if you walk outside.
00:13:18.759 --> 00:13:22.085
And so I was terrified of going outside.
00:13:22.125 --> 00:13:29.856
And then years later, I lived on campus at the University of Southern California in my freshman dorm.
00:13:30.658 --> 00:13:33.821
And my first class was at the Performing Arts Annex.
00:13:34.562 --> 00:13:37.966
And I had to walk past the Shrine Auditorium to get to it.
00:13:38.706 --> 00:13:42.490
I thought, I'm now living in the most dangerous place in the world.
00:13:43.312 --> 00:13:44.373
Which it really kind of was.
00:13:44.413 --> 00:13:48.216
I mean, I lived in Los Angeles during the 1992 Rodney King riots.
00:13:49.197 --> 00:13:50.278
That's a whole other story.
00:13:51.120 --> 00:13:54.443
So here I am playing one of the Nephite children.
00:13:55.725 --> 00:13:59.710
The actor who played Jesus was...
00:14:00.322 --> 00:14:05.809
I projected everything I thought or believed about Jesus onto him.
00:14:06.751 --> 00:14:23.977
That when he appeared to the Nephites and we burst into song, I felt this sort of overwhelming connection to the divine and this overwhelming realization that Jesus was real.
00:14:23.998 --> 00:14:29.145
This actor wasn't really Jesus, but there really was a Jesus.
00:14:29.922 --> 00:14:33.706
And Jesus knew me and cared about me.
00:14:33.745 --> 00:14:42.375
And at one point, there was a testimony meeting for the entire cast.
00:14:42.416 --> 00:14:49.364
And we were seated in the Shrine Auditorium with its, I don't know, 3,000, 10,000 seats?
00:14:49.464 --> 00:14:49.884
I don't know.
00:14:50.105 --> 00:14:51.927
It's just this huge space.
00:14:52.606 --> 00:14:55.090
And we were sort of huddled up next to the stage.
00:14:56.572 --> 00:14:56.731
And...
00:14:58.946 --> 00:15:19.408
as we were singing it, or I'm sorry, as at the testimony meeting, uh, the guy who'd written the music was talking and he said, I want you to remember every time you sing the love of God, because you feel something every time you sing that.
00:15:19.427 --> 00:15:28.945
I mean, he just said that to all of us, but it felt like he was boring right into my soul, uh, And I thought, yeah, I do feel something every time I sing that.
00:15:30.046 --> 00:15:34.551
And he said, that which you feel is the love of God.
00:15:36.192 --> 00:15:41.578
And that just sort of kind of exploded into me.
00:15:41.599 --> 00:15:51.129
I mean, I think of the Joseph Smith saying, never did any passage of scripture come with more power to the heart of man than this did at this time to mine.
00:15:51.931 --> 00:15:53.172
That's sort of how I felt.
00:15:53.873 --> 00:15:54.413
And it was...
00:15:54.850 --> 00:16:11.711
the one time I can sort of pinpoint in my youth, in my childhood, where I knew God loved me, I knew God cared about me, and I knew God knew me by name, that I was important to God, me individually, little Jimmy Bennett.
00:16:13.293 --> 00:16:28.443
And it was decades later, probably about 10 years ago, when I went to a state conference, and I don't know where they dug it up, But the state choir had found an arrangement of the song, The Love of God.
00:16:28.484 --> 00:16:31.326
And they started to sing it.
00:16:31.648 --> 00:16:35.292
And instantly, that came back to me.
00:16:35.672 --> 00:16:39.096
Instantly, in that moment, I felt the love of God.
00:16:39.115 --> 00:16:40.758
I knew God loved me.
00:16:40.778 --> 00:16:44.101
I knew God knew me and knew me by name.
00:16:45.383 --> 00:16:47.985
And it was as if no time had passed whatsoever.
00:16:49.128 --> 00:16:50.950
And those kinds of moments...
00:16:51.778 --> 00:16:57.304
Those kinds of connections are things that the church actively facilitates.
00:16:57.365 --> 00:17:12.986
When we talk about the church, and even if we're critical of the church, there is no denying, at least in my life, that the church has facilitated a connection to deity.
00:17:13.886 --> 00:17:27.340
That through the church, through activity in the church, through service in the church, I have been able to essentially be introduced to God and make that connection with God.
00:17:28.461 --> 00:17:44.086
And so that's one of the reasons I think why so many people, even the people who are critical of the church or even if they're excommunicated from the church, the cliche is you leave the church and you can't leave it alone.
00:17:45.122 --> 00:18:04.321
But to some degree, you leave the church, and the church can't leave you alone in a good way, in that all of the goodness, all of the teachings, that facilitation of the relationship with the divine, that doesn't just banish when you walk out the door.
00:18:04.583 --> 00:18:05.443
That's still with you.
00:18:06.183 --> 00:18:08.527
So that's my long, lengthy answer to your question.
00:18:09.528 --> 00:18:17.387
But before I throw it back to you, Would you indulge me in telling a more modern story that I think goes along with this?
00:18:19.470 --> 00:18:20.612
Please do.
00:18:21.071 --> 00:18:34.688
Well, and I'm a little, I'm hoping that this podcast comes out after the other person in the story releases their video where they tell this story.
00:18:35.949 --> 00:18:40.314
I think many of our listeners would be acquainted with our friend Nemo the Mormon.
00:18:41.250 --> 00:18:43.412
who we've interviewed on this podcast.
00:18:44.292 --> 00:18:52.301
And when we interviewed him on this podcast, he started talking about his love for music, his connection to the divine that he feels through choral music.
00:18:53.242 --> 00:19:03.875
And I think I even said on the podcast, it may have been afterwards when we were talking, but I think it may even be on the podcast, I said, look, the Tabernacle Choir has what they call musical guests.
00:19:04.836 --> 00:19:12.792
I am allowed to invite people to come to a Tabernacle Choir rehearsal and actually sing with the choir.
00:19:12.813 --> 00:19:15.717
You won't be singing in a performance, but you'll be singing in a rehearsal.
00:19:16.178 --> 00:19:20.825
We'll give you the music and you'll sing along as if you were a member of the choir.
00:19:20.845 --> 00:19:29.557
And near the end of the rehearsal, Mac Wilberg will ask you to stand up and he'll read your bio and everybody will applaud and be glad that you're there.
00:19:29.598 --> 00:19:32.742
And he said, boy, that would be a lot of fun.
00:19:32.823 --> 00:19:37.049
And I said, well, let me know well in advance because it takes forever.
00:19:37.089 --> 00:19:39.554
I booked...
00:19:40.417 --> 00:19:49.528
these guests sometime in the summer of last year, like June, July, or it was probably right after I had talked to Nemo.
00:19:49.567 --> 00:19:51.329
We had talked to Nemo on our podcast.
00:19:52.711 --> 00:19:56.296
And this didn't happen until just a couple of weeks ago.
00:19:56.336 --> 00:19:59.459
March 6th was the day that he had been booked.
00:20:00.519 --> 00:20:08.608
Because he said, yeah, I'd love to do that, and I'm going to be in Utah in March, and I would love nothing more than to sing with the Tab Choir.
00:20:08.648 --> 00:20:11.045
So, I booked this.
00:20:11.464 --> 00:20:14.048
I went through all of the channels to make it happen.
00:20:14.189 --> 00:20:18.474
And then in September, Nemo was excommunicated.
00:20:19.676 --> 00:20:22.902
And he sent me a message and said, is that going to affect anything?
00:20:24.263 --> 00:20:33.056
Well, the first thing he said was, he actually sent me the message before he was excommunicated because he says, do you have to be a member of the church to sing with the choir?
00:20:33.857 --> 00:20:36.000
And I said, no, which is absolutely true.
00:20:36.040 --> 00:20:36.500
In fact...
00:20:36.961 --> 00:20:41.086
They encourage you to invite non-members to sing with the choir.
00:20:41.126 --> 00:20:48.376
I think there's no rule as to the status of the people you invite to sing.
00:20:48.457 --> 00:20:53.041
And if they're non-members, there are none of the conditions that apply to the members.
00:20:53.143 --> 00:21:01.053
If you're a member, you have to be either over 80 years old or live more than 500 miles away from the tabernacle.
00:21:02.054 --> 00:21:03.996
So they don't want people to just invite their...
00:21:05.506 --> 00:21:13.616
friends who live next door to them who are in the church, but they see it as a missionary opportunity, and so they want you to invite non-members.
00:21:15.439 --> 00:21:21.247
Now, excommunicated members, that's a little bit, I would think, a little bit of a gray area.
00:21:21.307 --> 00:21:22.167
I had never asked.
00:21:22.188 --> 00:21:23.068
I hadn't thought about it.
00:21:24.050 --> 00:21:28.616
And he said, it's looking like I'm going to be excommunicated, and I would still love to do this.
00:21:28.737 --> 00:21:32.602
And I said, okay, then tell you what.
00:21:33.153 --> 00:21:40.182
I don't see a problem as long as we don't use this occasion to embarrass the church.
00:21:41.045 --> 00:21:43.887
I think in your bio, we don't talk about your podcast.
00:21:43.928 --> 00:21:45.830
We just talk about your choral experience.
00:21:46.632 --> 00:21:59.869
And I would very much appreciate it if you just didn't let anybody know you were doing this, that you don't go on your podcast and advertise this, that you're not trying to pull a fast one on the church, that you're not trying to embarrass the church.
00:22:00.546 --> 00:22:04.112
And you know, could not have been more gracious, could not have been more understanding.
00:22:04.132 --> 00:22:05.513
No, I understand that.
00:22:05.554 --> 00:22:06.736
That's entirely appropriate.
00:22:07.798 --> 00:22:08.799
I very much want to do this.
00:22:09.441 --> 00:22:12.987
So time goes on and he shows up in Utah.
00:22:13.086 --> 00:22:16.692
I took him out to dinner and then we went to the tabernacle.
00:22:17.974 --> 00:22:26.769
And it's really, really fun to see the choir through somebody else's eyes because you sort of start to take it for granted a little bit.
00:22:27.650 --> 00:22:44.515
You know, you go up and you sit in the choir loft and you really don't get a sense of what the choir sounds like as a full thing because you're in your own little corner of the world and you're listening to the people around you and you just get kind of a warped sense of what the total of it is.
00:22:45.155 --> 00:22:59.079
But when Nemo came, I sat with him out in the choir audience and he was not invited to come and sing in the loft until after sort of the opening There was a little bit of an opening rehearsal.
00:22:59.140 --> 00:22:59.580
Then there was a...
00:23:00.000 --> 00:23:06.269
We always have this sort of short devotional where a member of the choir presidency just shares a spiritual thought.
00:23:07.069 --> 00:23:08.791
And then the rehearsal begins in earnest.
00:23:09.152 --> 00:23:10.914
And that's when he was taken up to sing.
00:23:11.915 --> 00:23:22.548
But as we walked in and as I sat out there and the choir was singing and you could get the full impact and feel it and you could see the look on Nemo's face.
00:23:23.349 --> 00:23:24.131
I mean, he just...
00:23:24.351 --> 00:23:25.071
He was in heaven.
00:23:25.413 --> 00:23:26.134
He was just...
00:23:26.625 --> 00:23:28.307
wow, this is amazing.
00:23:28.888 --> 00:23:31.593
And I just thought, yeah, it really is, isn't it?
00:23:32.653 --> 00:23:36.159
So he ended up getting taken up into the loft.
00:23:37.300 --> 00:23:43.409
And I actually didn't sing in the loft that rehearsal because I was going to be gone on Sunday.
00:23:44.289 --> 00:23:55.685
So for attendance purposes, if you're going to be gone on Sunday, you still come to the rehearsal, but they ask you to sort of sit on the side so that they can get a sense of who's going to be there on Sunday so they know what the choir numbers are going to look like.
00:23:56.769 --> 00:24:12.638
And so I was sitting on the side and one of the guys who he's, he's, I'm not sure what his official title is, but they're most of the people who are volunteers for the choir are former members of the choir.
00:24:13.540 --> 00:24:17.387
You have to end your service of the choir when you reach 60 years old.
00:24:17.407 --> 00:24:18.750
And many of these people are.
00:24:19.009 --> 00:24:21.913
say, oof, I want to do whatever I can to sort of stay involved.
00:24:22.512 --> 00:24:29.599
And so they volunteer, and some of them volunteer in the wardrobe department, and they deal with your suits and women's dresses.
00:24:29.720 --> 00:24:36.487
And other people, this guy is one of the volunteers who essentially arranges choir seating.
00:24:37.607 --> 00:24:47.657
Every Sunday, there are different people who aren't there, and we get put into different chairs to make sure we look good and that there aren't any holes in the presentation.
00:24:47.778 --> 00:24:53.491
And And so this guy is the guy who actually took Nemo and found him a seat.
00:24:54.513 --> 00:24:58.298
And he came to me and he says, your friend looks like he's having a blast.
00:24:59.420 --> 00:25:00.862
And I said, yeah, he does, doesn't he?
00:25:00.902 --> 00:25:01.844
And he did.
00:25:01.884 --> 00:25:03.806
Everybody around him was sort of chatting with him.
00:25:03.846 --> 00:25:05.208
He just seemed to be having a great time.
00:25:05.228 --> 00:25:09.374
And then we were talking and he says, now, is he a member of the church?
00:25:11.135 --> 00:25:15.281
And I got a little nervous and I said, well, let's see.
00:25:15.617 --> 00:25:17.520
How do I finesse this?
00:25:17.740 --> 00:25:19.103
And I decided, you know what?
00:25:19.343 --> 00:25:20.865
What I'm going to do is just tell the truth.
00:25:21.786 --> 00:25:22.747
And I said, he used to be.
00:25:22.787 --> 00:25:26.372
And I said, he was when I booked this.
00:25:27.574 --> 00:25:28.775
And we talked a little.
00:25:29.096 --> 00:25:31.298
And I said, he's since been excommunicated.
00:25:31.338 --> 00:25:32.259
He's a podcaster.
00:25:32.941 --> 00:25:34.722
And he said some things that were controversial.
00:25:34.843 --> 00:25:36.164
And he's since been excommunicated.
00:25:36.184 --> 00:25:37.366
But he still wanted to do this.
00:25:38.107 --> 00:25:39.630
Is that going to be a problem?
00:25:41.392 --> 00:25:42.673
And instantly...
00:25:43.362 --> 00:25:45.403
This guy said, oh, no, no, no, of course not.
00:25:45.604 --> 00:25:46.805
I hope he has a lovely time.
00:25:47.286 --> 00:25:49.228
I mean, there was absolutely no judgment.
00:25:49.327 --> 00:25:51.250
There was absolutely no condemnation.
00:25:52.049 --> 00:25:54.192
When we got in there, I got a text message.
00:25:55.354 --> 00:25:56.974
And it was from a number I didn't recognize.
00:25:57.015 --> 00:25:58.497
And it said, now, is Nemo sitting next to you?
00:25:59.718 --> 00:26:00.778
I went, oh, crud.
00:26:01.179 --> 00:26:01.680
Who's this?
00:26:03.141 --> 00:26:03.701
Am I in trouble?
00:26:04.422 --> 00:26:08.266
And I Googled the number and found out it was a choir member who was cool.
00:26:09.606 --> 00:26:11.229
And I texted back, yes, it's Nemo.
00:26:11.269 --> 00:26:12.430
Please don't get me into trouble.
00:26:13.442 --> 00:26:14.784
And he says, oh, no, no, I want to meet him.
00:26:15.785 --> 00:26:25.659
And so usually after they're introduced, they take them out and take some more pictures with them and they finish the rehearsal doing more music.
00:26:25.778 --> 00:26:31.287
But the guy I was sitting with who does the seating said, your friend looks like he's having way too much fun.
00:26:31.446 --> 00:26:33.108
Can we just leave him until the end of the rehearsal?
00:26:33.328 --> 00:26:34.691
I'm like, yeah, yeah, please do.
00:26:34.730 --> 00:26:36.513
And.
00:26:37.506 --> 00:26:43.711
And so we get to the end of the rehearsal and he comes down and the friend who texted me comes to meet him.
00:26:44.272 --> 00:26:47.056
And a few other people recognized him and it was all positive.
00:26:47.215 --> 00:26:49.519
And they're like, Nemo, hey, it's so fun to see you.
00:26:50.680 --> 00:26:55.684
So it was just the perfect evening until the very end.
00:26:56.986 --> 00:27:01.111
We get to the very end and we're literally walking out the door.
00:27:02.491 --> 00:27:03.874
And this woman who...
00:27:04.673 --> 00:27:06.596
I'm not going to name names.
00:27:06.676 --> 00:27:08.520
I don't want to give anything that might identify her.
00:27:08.641 --> 00:27:09.803
I said, she's a woman.
00:27:09.903 --> 00:27:26.510
So you can try to figure it out from, it wasn't one of the men, but it was a woman who walks up to him and she said something like, um, Nemo in his recording of it says, he said, I recognized you.
00:27:26.550 --> 00:27:30.178
I remember her saying, I know who you are.
00:27:31.298 --> 00:27:42.490
Either way, I'm not sure which one of us is right, but either way, it was very clearly a sarcastic attack or like, aha, I've caught you kind of thing.
00:27:42.509 --> 00:27:44.672
I know who you are.
00:27:44.692 --> 00:27:50.258
And Nemo just tried to play it off and just went, shh, don't tell anyone.
00:27:50.538 --> 00:27:51.779
You know, just like, ha, ha, ha.
00:27:52.701 --> 00:27:56.345
He didn't, I don't think he recognized just how hostile she was being.
00:27:57.625 --> 00:28:00.950
And then she looks at me and she says, and I told Grant.
00:28:02.114 --> 00:28:05.678
Now, Grant is a former member of the choir.
00:28:05.718 --> 00:28:09.021
He actually sang in the choir with me while I'd been here.
00:28:09.082 --> 00:28:15.150
But then he was sort of promoted to become the manager of the men's section.
00:28:15.630 --> 00:28:20.756
There's one man who manages the men's section and one woman who manages the women's section.
00:28:20.796 --> 00:28:26.202
And Grant is sort of the head guy for all of the men in the choir.
00:28:27.263 --> 00:28:28.705
And she says, and I told Grant.
00:28:29.857 --> 00:28:33.923
And then she looked at Nemo and says, well, I hope you had a good time.
00:28:33.962 --> 00:28:35.525
Just like that.
00:28:35.565 --> 00:28:41.732
You know, it's just, it's like, oh, come on, come on.
00:28:41.772 --> 00:28:43.454
Why do you have to be rude?
00:28:44.076 --> 00:28:45.417
Why do you have to be unkind?
00:28:45.458 --> 00:28:50.384
This was such a lovely evening and he didn't hurt anybody.
00:28:50.403 --> 00:28:56.340
He had a great time and And so we walked back to the car, and I just felt terrible.
00:28:56.520 --> 00:28:58.722
And I was apologizing up, down, and sideways.
00:28:58.784 --> 00:29:03.968
It was made a little bit better by another guy who walked up to him, recognized him, and said, hey, Nemo.
00:29:04.067 --> 00:29:05.169
Hey, it's so nice to see you.
00:29:06.830 --> 00:29:15.858
But just this one person had just cast a pall over the entire evening, which was such a lovely evening.
00:29:16.759 --> 00:29:19.583
And so Nemo drives off in his car.
00:29:19.623 --> 00:29:20.763
I drive off in mine.
00:29:20.884 --> 00:29:22.625
And I went, I want to get out in front of this.
00:29:23.425 --> 00:29:26.529
I don't want to just have this percolating out there.
00:29:26.589 --> 00:29:31.916
If I'm in trouble for having invited someone who's been excommunicated to sing with the choir, I want to know now.
00:29:32.277 --> 00:29:35.161
So I found Grant's phone number, and I gave him a call.
00:29:36.162 --> 00:29:37.344
And Grant was very pleasant.
00:29:37.384 --> 00:29:37.804
Hi, Jim.
00:29:37.844 --> 00:29:38.265
How are you?
00:29:38.585 --> 00:29:39.105
Hi, Grant.
00:29:39.165 --> 00:29:39.926
I'm doing well.
00:29:40.007 --> 00:29:44.452
And he just was like, oh, you know, how was your friend?
00:29:44.492 --> 00:29:46.055
Your friend seemed to enjoy it.
00:29:46.576 --> 00:29:48.317
I had also invited another woman.
00:29:49.026 --> 00:29:50.847
It was completely non-controversial.
00:29:50.948 --> 00:29:52.150
I'll tell that story very quickly.
00:29:52.190 --> 00:29:53.451
I didn't know this woman.
00:29:53.652 --> 00:29:59.199
This was somebody I'd met on Twitter who said, my grandmother is dying and her final wish is to sing in the choir.
00:30:00.200 --> 00:30:01.902
And I went, oh, well, I can arrange that.
00:30:03.364 --> 00:30:04.144
You know, I'm a big shot.
00:30:04.765 --> 00:30:07.969
So these are the only musical guests I've ever had were Nemo and this woman.
00:30:09.171 --> 00:30:14.897
She was 85 years old and she had throat cancer and her vocal cords were paralyzed.
00:30:15.874 --> 00:30:18.917
And she just wanted to sit in the choir loft and sing.
00:30:18.938 --> 00:30:27.750
And Mac Wilberg, the choir director, was visibly moved when he read her bio.
00:30:28.251 --> 00:30:33.819
He just told the story of how she'd always wanted to sing with the choir, but she'd never really got the opportunity.
00:30:33.859 --> 00:30:43.513
And now, at the age of 85, with her vocal cords paralyzed, she just wants to sit in the loft and feel the testimonies of all the people around her.
00:30:44.642 --> 00:30:49.827
And at the end of it, she came away and she said, it was a miracle.
00:30:49.847 --> 00:30:51.730
I was able to sing.
00:30:51.769 --> 00:30:55.394
And for one night, she was able to sing.
00:30:55.413 --> 00:31:00.118
And it was just such a lovely experience, absolutely uplifting.
00:31:00.720 --> 00:31:05.285
And she's still very much an active member of the church, so nobody was going to give her a hard time for that.
00:31:05.345 --> 00:31:09.409
But it was Nemo that was attracting all the attention.
00:31:09.489 --> 00:31:13.693
And when I called Grant, I said, I understand this woman has talked to you.
00:31:15.041 --> 00:31:19.267
And I just wanted to, and he said, oh, did she do that?
00:31:19.646 --> 00:31:20.587
She wasn't supposed to do that.
00:31:21.128 --> 00:31:22.309
Oh, I hope she wasn't rude.
00:31:23.070 --> 00:31:24.972
And I'm like, oh, she absolutely was rude.
00:31:26.013 --> 00:31:27.695
Oh, no, we'll talk to her.
00:31:27.736 --> 00:31:29.817
We'll make sure, we'll smooth that over.
00:31:29.857 --> 00:31:30.558
I'm so sorry.
00:31:30.578 --> 00:31:33.261
He says, Jim, you did absolutely nothing wrong.
00:31:33.342 --> 00:31:35.324
We were very grateful to have him here.
00:31:35.364 --> 00:31:37.425
Please let him know that.
00:31:37.926 --> 00:31:41.349
Please let him know how much we appreciated his enthusiasm.
00:31:41.369 --> 00:31:44.513
I mean, they just could not have been more gracious.
00:31:45.346 --> 00:31:53.478
Well, this thing escalated because I was out of town that weekend and I'd gone down to Southern California with my family.
00:31:53.518 --> 00:31:57.683
We went and watched a tennis tournament in Indian Wells, which is right by Palm Springs.
00:31:59.005 --> 00:32:06.635
And I saw on my phone, on Twitter, there's an account that attacks me.
00:32:06.655 --> 00:32:08.358
He's been attacking me for about four years.
00:32:09.941 --> 00:32:13.286
And they had a picture of Nemo singing in the choir.
00:32:14.402 --> 00:32:25.413
And it was so obvious that the woman who had come and insulted him and been rude to him was the woman who had taken the picture.
00:32:25.453 --> 00:32:27.016
You can see from the camera angle.
00:32:27.556 --> 00:32:28.217
You can just look.
00:32:28.317 --> 00:32:34.242
The person taking the picture had to be sitting where this person sits in the choir loft.
00:32:35.223 --> 00:32:36.986
And it was just, this is Jim Bennett.
00:32:37.026 --> 00:32:39.709
He brings apostates to...
00:32:40.546 --> 00:32:41.906
to sing with the choir.
00:32:42.027 --> 00:32:44.869
Jim, stop bringing apostates to sing with the choir.
00:32:44.930 --> 00:32:45.590
How dare you?
00:32:45.651 --> 00:32:46.330
Blah, blah, blah.
00:32:47.112 --> 00:32:48.432
And I went, oh my goodness.
00:32:48.634 --> 00:32:54.138
And it was at least kind of a relief to know that this woman, I assume this woman ran this account.
00:32:55.000 --> 00:33:02.185
She has since denied it, that she doesn't run it, but she had posted this picture in some private Facebook group.
00:33:03.488 --> 00:33:07.211
Anyway, so then I thought, okay, this is escalating out of control.
00:33:07.250 --> 00:33:09.053
This is just terrible.
00:33:09.073 --> 00:33:10.013
This is embarrassing.
00:33:10.529 --> 00:33:12.051
And so I texted Grant.
00:33:12.893 --> 00:33:14.994
I said, Grant, I just hope to let this die.
00:33:15.035 --> 00:33:20.481
But this post has appeared on Twitter from an account that's been harassing me for four years.
00:33:21.021 --> 00:33:23.664
And now I know that this woman is behind this account.
00:33:23.766 --> 00:33:26.749
And I just, I don't know what to do.
00:33:26.769 --> 00:33:28.451
I really think this is a problem.
00:33:28.590 --> 00:33:30.653
And he says, oh, it absolutely is a problem.
00:33:30.693 --> 00:33:32.035
We will take care of it on Sunday.
00:33:33.436 --> 00:33:37.701
And so after the broadcast on Sunday, I got a call from Grant.
00:33:38.625 --> 00:33:39.307
And he talked to him.
00:33:39.326 --> 00:33:41.891
He says, yes, we sort of read her the riot act.
00:33:41.990 --> 00:33:45.455
If she does steps out of line again and does this again, she's on a short leash.
00:33:46.257 --> 00:33:47.178
She's in big trouble.
00:33:48.078 --> 00:33:56.490
And she said, I just don't think you understand just all the terrible things that Nemo has said about the church.
00:33:58.012 --> 00:33:59.615
And Grant said, really?
00:33:59.635 --> 00:34:01.137
So did Alma the Younger.
00:34:01.157 --> 00:34:03.121
So did Paul.
00:34:03.141 --> 00:34:05.544
He was attacking the early Christians.
00:34:05.564 --> 00:34:06.846
I mean...
00:34:07.074 --> 00:34:25.393
The whole experience was just so encouraging to me because choir leadership, every step of the way, was going out of their way to be inclusive, to be kind, to be welcoming.
00:34:25.432 --> 00:34:32.400
And the thing that kept coming up over and over and over again is, I really hope he had a great experience.
00:34:33.121 --> 00:34:36.096
I really hope that he felt the spirit.
00:34:37.016 --> 00:34:44.288
And good for you, Jim, for giving this guy an opportunity to engage with the church in a positive way.
00:34:44.327 --> 00:34:47.612
And Nemo has since recorded his experience.
00:34:47.934 --> 00:34:57.809
Because the other thing I said to Grant was, I had talked to Nemo about this and told him, hey, don't, can we just not talk about this?
00:34:57.869 --> 00:34:59.431
Can you just not call attention to this?
00:35:00.492 --> 00:35:03.617
And Grant said, tell him to talk about it all he wants.
00:35:04.130 --> 00:35:06.572
Tell him to call as much attention to it as he wants.
00:35:07.454 --> 00:35:08.755
We were grateful to have him here.
00:35:08.795 --> 00:35:10.056
We hope he had a great time.
00:35:11.217 --> 00:35:25.635
So the moral of the story, at least in the context of the discussion we're having here on this episode, is that it is so easy to look at the scandal of the moment.
00:35:26.777 --> 00:35:41.623
We look at all of the things that are happening today in our small, and I think it's a relatively small corner of the online world where we see people who are in trouble with the church or even excommunicated from the church.
00:35:42.965 --> 00:35:55.422
And I think they have sort of a larger outsized, those moments have a larger outsized presence in at least my mind than they do in the world at large.
00:35:55.702 --> 00:36:03.385
I think for the most part, most members of the church go about their business and go about their worship without being troubled by any of this.
00:36:04.166 --> 00:36:17.483
And I often think, okay, well, all the terrible people who are online, the people who attack me relentlessly, the Desnets and those sorts of folks, they have an outsized influence on my perception of the church.
00:36:18.065 --> 00:36:36.757
The reality is I think the vast majority of the members of the church and of the leaders of the church are good, wonderful, decent people who would do anything to help you and do anything to lift you up.
00:36:37.659 --> 00:37:03.902
And so on the whole, you know, when we talk about, we say things that are critical of the church or we point out something that's happening that we're not happy with, I just think it's essential to remember that at its core and the overwhelming majority of the people In this church, this is a force for good.
00:37:03.942 --> 00:37:06.043
These are good people.
00:37:07.344 --> 00:37:13.751
This church does good and even great things and blesses lives and lifts people up.
00:37:14.592 --> 00:37:16.253
And yes, it's not perfect.
00:37:16.855 --> 00:37:18.757
Yes, it falls down on occasion.
00:37:18.836 --> 00:37:19.418
So do I.
00:37:19.458 --> 00:37:21.719
As an individual, all of us do.
00:37:22.820 --> 00:37:33.313
And I think we need to give as much grace to the church as a whole That we give individuals who struggle and fall down and then get back up and try to do good things.
00:37:34.153 --> 00:37:39.721
But I just, throughout my life, in summation here, and then I will shut up.
00:37:40.862 --> 00:37:42.925
I've said enough for two episodes here probably.
00:37:43.726 --> 00:37:51.016
But in summation, the church has blessed my life in immeasurable ways.
00:37:51.876 --> 00:37:55.521
From the time I was born all the way till now.
00:37:56.065 --> 00:37:58.168
And it continues to bless my life.
00:37:59.168 --> 00:38:25.657
00:38:26.402 --> 00:38:31.170
The reason we're doing this, the reason we engage with this is because we love this church.
00:38:31.389 --> 00:38:35.777
This church has blessed both of our lives, continues to bless our lives.
00:38:36.538 --> 00:38:44.170
And we want to make sure that it continues to do so long after we're gone.
00:38:44.550 --> 00:38:49.177
Continues to do so for our children and grandchildren and for the whole world.
00:38:49.518 --> 00:38:50.300
So there you go.
00:38:50.320 --> 00:38:52.864
I told you big, long stories.
00:38:52.923 --> 00:38:53.864
I answered your question.
00:38:54.465 --> 00:38:57.969
I hijacked it and told the Nemo story, but I just want that out there.
00:38:57.989 --> 00:39:03.434
I want my side of that story out there because I think it makes the church look great.
00:39:04.534 --> 00:39:05.996
I think the church did a great thing here.
00:39:07.818 --> 00:39:07.998
Yeah.
00:39:09.099 --> 00:39:11.581
I want to thank you for sharing that story there with Nemo.
00:39:11.621 --> 00:39:23.313
And as I listened to, I think this is extraordinary conversation and very timely because, you know, we're talking about the blessings that the church brings into our lives.
00:39:24.641 --> 00:39:25.282
And there are many.
00:39:26.664 --> 00:39:34.976
And you shared earlier your connection to deity, to God, to Jesus Christ, and your sense of spirituality through music.
00:39:35.338 --> 00:39:36.179
Very, very important to you.
00:39:36.318 --> 00:39:37.981
It's who you are.
00:39:38.181 --> 00:39:39.804
It's the very core of who you are.
00:39:39.844 --> 00:39:46.193
And Nemo, of course, had clearly a very positive, constructive experience.
00:39:46.213 --> 00:39:50.340
He also connects to his own spirituality through music.
00:39:50.380 --> 00:39:51.742
And so it's a wonderful connection.
00:39:51.905 --> 00:40:00.101
blessing to him and to you to be able to go to the choir and to participate, to listen, and to experience that level of spirituality through music.
00:40:02.505 --> 00:40:11.603
That is a really important area of your life where your life and your family is enriched spiritually through music.
00:40:12.063 --> 00:40:14.007
And the church is phenomenal.
00:40:14.369 --> 00:40:22.340
I mean, You know, the hymns, the choir, you know, the connection with God and the connection with community, the connection with each other.
00:40:22.380 --> 00:40:23.320
Music connects us.
00:40:24.322 --> 00:40:28.108
The words, the lyrics, the sounds, the melodies, the spirituality behind them.
00:40:28.148 --> 00:40:31.932
And it's very, very important to you and to many others for sharing that.
00:40:32.833 --> 00:40:38.541
I think what's extraordinary about this conversation is that as we, our listeners may not know this, but we, our...
00:40:39.202 --> 00:41:11.554
type and level of preparation for these podcasts varies often we have a topic we think about it you do your research i do my research we come to the podcast um usually uh prepared sometimes it's um you know prepared with notes of course other times uh for whatever reason the conversation goes off in a different direction and on often i think at least in a very wonderful direction and i think this podcast is no uh this conversation no exception as i was listening to you and And again, grateful for you sharing your insights and your stories there.
00:41:12.976 --> 00:41:28.153
You touched upon another area, a note that I made in preparation for this conversation, which is perhaps the church's greatest attribute, arguably, the members.
00:41:28.594 --> 00:41:30.777
And I've got that here in my notes here.
00:41:30.797 --> 00:41:37.726
And I want to just kind of add to what you've said, because my life has been incredibly difficult.
00:41:37.954 --> 00:41:42.028
blessed and enriched through the members of the church.
00:41:43.032 --> 00:42:06.358
00:42:07.519 --> 00:42:23.394
The Young Drivers Challenge that we did in the Dalkeith Ward, numerous endless activities and actions that I've been involved in personally that the vast majority of that experience has been incredibly rewarding and enriching for me.
00:42:23.414 --> 00:42:45.597
And behind that is the extraordinary, Jim, and you know this as much as anyone in the church, any level, the extraordinary love and kindness and sacrifice and caring and commitment and devotion and service, again, that the members provide.
00:42:45.730 --> 00:42:55.143
commit and devote on a very personal level to help others, often without reward, almost always without reward.
00:42:55.925 --> 00:42:57.507
People don't get paid.
00:42:57.547 --> 00:42:59.190
The members don't get paid to do this.
00:43:00.431 --> 00:43:02.173
We're a volunteer.
00:43:02.193 --> 00:43:05.900
I use the word we because I still feel part of the church in many ways.
00:43:05.940 --> 00:43:29.463
We're a volunteer organization, and we rely almost entirely on the kindness of and the volunteerism of the members who give an extraordinary amount of time and energy and resources to support the church and to help and support each other across a range of challenges and issues.
00:43:30.503 --> 00:43:39.713
And I just want to just touch upon that briefly because this experience I want to share with you is, for me at least, describes the...
00:43:40.385 --> 00:43:47.713
extraordinary uniqueness and distinction of the church in how the members can bless our lives at a very personal level.
00:43:48.173 --> 00:43:51.838
I mentioned earlier that when I joined the church, I was in a pretty bad shape emotionally.
00:43:51.878 --> 00:43:56.443
I've shared a bit more of that detail on earlier podcasts.
00:43:57.264 --> 00:44:13.509
A few moments ago, I shared that the incredible value and importance to me of friendships during the church, people actually interested in who I was and me thinking, yeah, why are they so interested?
00:44:13.528 --> 00:44:24.219
And I'm really not worth that much because are my worth more than what I think I am because they're interested in being my friend.
00:44:24.280 --> 00:44:33.128
And it was a very interesting transitional, emotional, spiritual time in my life.
00:44:33.750 --> 00:44:39.534
But there was one, I mentioned that there was a leader, a youth leader that said, Bless my life.
00:44:39.574 --> 00:44:41.797
And I want to mention him by name because he's a wonderful man.
00:44:41.838 --> 00:44:43.800
And I hope he one day he might listen to this.
00:44:44.340 --> 00:44:46.322
His name was Dave Makings, David Makings.
00:44:46.402 --> 00:44:47.784
And he was the young men's advisor.
00:44:47.824 --> 00:44:58.637
And he recognized that I was troubled and that I had these questions about my life and my direction and how I felt about myself.
00:44:59.358 --> 00:45:35.625
00:45:35.664 --> 00:45:41.652
And he had an abundance of leadership skills, a great communicator, a wonderful leader.
00:45:41.672 --> 00:45:54.827
I think he became a bishop in another ward, but a wonderful man that was really interested in people and genuinely interested in actually building people, helping people feel good.
00:45:55.208 --> 00:46:00.034
And he took an interest in me and he was just...
00:46:00.418 --> 00:46:14.099
the first few conversations I find it very difficult to open up, but over time, over a few months of doing activities and him organizing the activities and the events in MIA and, you know, lots of new memories, lots of fun, you know, physical activities.
00:46:14.179 --> 00:46:17.503
And he was also very good at building, doing workshops as well.
00:46:17.583 --> 00:46:20.789
Jimmy did a lot of team building workshops with, with the youth.
00:46:21.469 --> 00:46:31.657
Instead of just doing like a regular program, it was very much about developing, um, What was later described as the SPEC program, if you remember that.
00:46:31.737 --> 00:46:39.826
So the SPEC program and the U program, probably 15 years ago, was spiritual, physical, educational, and community or citizenship.
00:46:40.106 --> 00:46:40.827
I'm trying to remember.
00:46:41.186 --> 00:46:43.228
Spiritual, physical, emotional.
00:46:45.592 --> 00:46:47.193
What was it?
00:46:47.253 --> 00:46:48.153
I thought it was educational.
00:46:48.193 --> 00:46:52.998
But anyway, he kind of practiced that way, way back, you know, when I was growing up.
00:46:53.539 --> 00:46:55.400
So he was very good at...
00:46:57.090 --> 00:47:05.266
talking about how we develop our professional skills or educational knowledge and skills and having a desire to go get an education.
00:47:05.306 --> 00:47:06.789
You know, Ian, go get a degree.
00:47:06.809 --> 00:47:07.371
You can do this.
00:47:08.032 --> 00:47:12.541
He was the first person to say to me at that time, Ian, you can do this.
00:47:13.442 --> 00:47:15.443
You really can be what you want to be.
00:47:15.483 --> 00:47:19.309
If you put your mind to it and you put your work in, you can pass college.
00:47:19.329 --> 00:47:25.976
Because I had so many doubts, so many second guesses, and so many questions about myself and whether I could do something or not.
00:47:26.016 --> 00:47:30.682
And this inner voice that said, Ian, you can't do this.
00:47:30.963 --> 00:47:32.385
It's not who you are.
00:47:32.425 --> 00:47:36.650
And that was almost my entire experience before joining the church.
00:47:36.989 --> 00:47:38.873
But Dave Makins, he was different.
00:47:39.592 --> 00:47:40.675
He said, Ian, you can do this.
00:47:41.335 --> 00:47:42.197
You can be successful.
00:47:42.657 --> 00:47:43.217
What do you want to do?
00:47:43.746 --> 00:47:44.567
How are you going to get there?
00:47:44.706 --> 00:47:45.487
What's your strategy?
00:47:46.228 --> 00:47:47.690
And it got me thinking.
00:47:47.751 --> 00:47:52.295
And I said, Dave, I don't know if I could do this, this college thing.
00:47:53.277 --> 00:47:56.061
And the mission, I said, they want me to serve a mission.
00:47:56.101 --> 00:47:58.563
And he said, well, how do you feel about that?
00:47:58.603 --> 00:47:59.806
What's your relationship with God?
00:47:59.846 --> 00:48:07.414
So he got to the very core of who I was, the very issues and problems that I was going through.
00:48:07.554 --> 00:48:08.817
He listened, he asked questions.
00:48:09.677 --> 00:48:12.041
And we talked about the church and the teaching, the doctrine.
00:48:12.081 --> 00:48:12.862
And by the way, he...
00:48:13.313 --> 00:48:26.811
was the first person that actually taught me more than a song, which is very important, more than a lesson, that I was a child of God and I was worth something.
00:48:28.092 --> 00:48:35.103
And God actually cared for me and was interested in me and that my life had some purpose, some meaning.
00:48:36.244 --> 00:48:40.128
And Dave was the first person to have that conversation with me.
00:48:40.994 --> 00:48:46.663
And to remind me that I wasn't worthless, that I had value, that I could achieve great things.
00:48:46.963 --> 00:48:49.427
And I could do that in the gospel of Jesus Christ.
00:48:49.487 --> 00:48:51.630
I could go to college.
00:48:51.650 --> 00:48:52.550
I could be successful.
00:48:52.731 --> 00:48:53.853
I could get a good job.
00:48:54.014 --> 00:48:55.496
I could provide for myself.
00:48:56.376 --> 00:48:57.818
I could serve in the church.
00:48:58.300 --> 00:49:06.052
He always said that when I'm stronger, that the Lord would require me to help others.
00:49:06.092 --> 00:49:09.556
He said, Ian, when you get into a position where you...
00:49:10.177 --> 00:49:18.327
are on higher ground spiritually and you feel you've got your confidence and your self-esteem, what do you think the Lord wants you to do from there on?
00:49:18.347 --> 00:49:22.010
And I was like, I said, help others.
00:49:22.050 --> 00:49:23.432
He said, exactly, that's what it's about.
00:49:24.534 --> 00:49:34.806
And he shared with me some of his challenges that he experienced as a youth and similar challenges in terms of confidence and self-esteem.
00:49:34.846 --> 00:49:43.228
So it was interesting that he'd gone through a similar experience as I did at that age, you know, 16, 17, 18 years old, et cetera.
00:49:43.248 --> 00:49:48.054
And I don't think I was the only one at that time that felt lost.
00:49:48.155 --> 00:49:56.766
I think, you know, youth, even today, of course, you know, we all go through those experiences where it can be quite intense and you're wondering, you know, what are you going to do for college?
00:49:56.806 --> 00:49:57.728
Or what about your job?
00:49:57.788 --> 00:49:58.829
And where's your life going?
00:49:58.869 --> 00:50:04.436
And I think a lot of young people even today, feel that pressure, right?
00:50:04.516 --> 00:50:06.798
That stress of, you know, what are you doing with life?
00:50:06.838 --> 00:50:12.525
And your friends are going off doing great things and you're like, my goodness, they seem to have that direction and purpose.
00:50:12.585 --> 00:50:17.130
I was very much at all these questions, but Dave Makings was amazing.
00:50:17.190 --> 00:50:21.717
He was, I just felt so blessed to have him in my life.
00:50:21.976 --> 00:50:28.043
And he is the epitome, Jim, of the members in the church, most of the members.
00:50:28.744 --> 00:50:35.072
There is a small difference minority, a small-minded minority in the church that spoil it for others.
00:50:36.295 --> 00:50:43.105
They question, they doubt, and they focus nitpicking on some of the negative.
00:50:44.045 --> 00:50:46.028
That's not been my experience, mostly.
00:50:46.128 --> 00:50:53.800
My experience of the members serving in those different capacities, the members are just the most amazing people on the planet.
00:50:54.001 --> 00:50:54.561
They really are.
00:50:54.581 --> 00:50:56.244
They care for each other.
00:50:56.425 --> 00:50:58.547
I'm not saying they don't talk or gossip about each other.
00:50:58.628 --> 00:51:06.186
I don't know any organization corporate, professional, charity, religious, that doesn't have that gossip element.
00:51:06.505 --> 00:51:11.012
That's something that we have to deal with all the time in the church.
00:51:11.132 --> 00:51:12.793
We're no different than any other organization.
00:51:12.994 --> 00:51:16.097
We all talk about each other positively, negatively.
00:51:16.318 --> 00:51:17.920
That's just human nature.
00:51:18.041 --> 00:51:20.284
We have to have a handle on that.
00:51:21.164 --> 00:51:24.670
We have to learn from Christ and we have to learn from the teachings.
00:51:24.929 --> 00:51:39.268
Whatever religion that we're in, try to look for the good in people And of course, it's important to have those conversations and to openly express our concerns with, if we see an individual's behavior, that's inappropriate.
00:51:39.307 --> 00:51:40.289
We have to address that.
00:51:40.329 --> 00:51:42.351
And we don't have to like everyone.
00:51:42.391 --> 00:51:45.032
We're required to love everyone.
00:51:45.054 --> 00:51:46.315
We don't have to like everyone.
00:51:46.335 --> 00:51:48.416
We're commanded to love each other.
00:51:48.436 --> 00:51:49.838
We're not commanded to like each other.
00:51:50.297 --> 00:51:51.380
But we have to work together.
00:51:51.420 --> 00:51:54.262
And we have to work together in the church for a common good.
00:51:54.322 --> 00:51:56.824
And if you look at your work, there are people at work that you probably don't like.
00:51:58.402 --> 00:52:02.827
you know, every organization, there are people that don't like each other, but they have to work together, you know, professionals.
00:52:03.349 --> 00:52:04.309
In the church, it's the same.
00:52:04.329 --> 00:52:15.324
You put together in these callings and you are required to work together for a common good, a common purpose, to help them bless the lives of your quorum or your auxiliary or if you're a bishop, you know, the ward.
00:52:16.065 --> 00:52:22.875
And hopefully in that experience that you learn and grow and you see the qualities and attributes of the people that you're serving with.
00:52:23.496 --> 00:52:35.998
And so the church is at its greatest strength and continues to be at its greatest through the extraordinary service and kindness and love of its members.
00:52:37.740 --> 00:52:52.824
And it's an incredibly powerful, in my opinion, the most important part of the church is the goodness that exists and continue to exist and grow in many ways within the members of the church.
00:52:53.724 --> 00:53:14.681
And I am incredibly grateful That the church organization, the structure of the church, how it's organized, allowed me, bless my life, to be able to work with others in all kinds of capacities for the benefit of others.
00:53:14.762 --> 00:53:23.818
And in fact, that service and commitment that I devoted, like so many members do, actually came back at me and blessed my life.
00:53:24.833 --> 00:53:34.621
And that's the scriptures, that's the teaching that if you serve others, if you serve and you serve God, you're actually always in debt because you get the blessings.
00:53:35.362 --> 00:53:40.733
So you go out, you sacrifice, you serve, you put the time in, do it through love, do it properly.
00:53:40.773 --> 00:53:50.054
Try not to do it through duty necessarily or guilt or a sense of duty or responsibility, although they're not necessarily bad things.
00:53:50.135 --> 00:53:54.224
The guilt thing is another conversation about why we serve.
00:53:55.266 --> 00:53:58.831
We should serve because we care, we love, and I believe most members do that.
00:53:59.532 --> 00:54:05.824
And when we do that, we work together as a team in that auxiliary and bless the lives of individuals.
00:54:06.284 --> 00:54:07.266
And just a quick story.
00:54:07.626 --> 00:54:19.195
I remember, I think I shared on an early podcast that when I decided to serve a mission, I went to my company boss and told him that I was going to serve this Mormon mission for the Mormon church.
00:54:19.295 --> 00:54:22.380
And he thought I was the most weirdest individual, very angry.
00:54:22.402 --> 00:54:24.063
They'd invested quite a bit of training in me.
00:54:24.143 --> 00:54:28.311
And I was being relatively successful in that technical role.
00:54:29.072 --> 00:54:36.706
And then time came to put my papers in and got called to Scotland.
00:54:37.538 --> 00:54:42.465
And then met with my, I think I had about six weeks before I left to go to Scotland.
00:54:42.485 --> 00:54:51.237
So I got my, I think I got my papers in November 86 or December 86 in January, end of January is when I was heading to the London MPC.
00:54:51.717 --> 00:54:58.106
So that was the time when I got the call to Scotland to go sit down with my boss and tell him, hey, you know, I'm staying with the company.
00:54:58.126 --> 00:54:59.829
I'm going on this Mormon mission.
00:54:59.849 --> 00:55:02.472
They knew I was a member of the church, but didn't show any interest in that.
00:55:02.492 --> 00:55:06.318
And then I, and then I told him the news and he fired me on the spot.
00:55:06.498 --> 00:55:08.862
As I mentioned earlier in the podcast, I was quite shocked.
00:55:08.882 --> 00:55:15.190
I remember going to my desk and seeing it on the movies where you put all your stuff into a box and then you walk.
00:55:15.711 --> 00:55:17.474
I had a company car, so I had no company car.
00:55:17.494 --> 00:55:20.438
And I walked to the bus stop with this cardboard box with my stuff in.
00:55:21.561 --> 00:55:23.023
I felt absolutely numb.
00:55:23.543 --> 00:55:24.666
But anyway, that was the situation.
00:55:24.885 --> 00:55:29.452
But what happened, I had this two months, six weeks or so before I went to Scotland.
00:55:29.954 --> 00:55:47.838
And the bishop there, Bishop Wainwright, amazing leader, and Doris Carlton, who's the lady that is the family member who allowed me to live with them after I was thrown out of my home and joined the church.
00:55:47.898 --> 00:55:54.726
And Doris was wonderful, and Colin, wonderful people who allowed me to stay with their family for a while.
00:55:55.748 --> 00:55:56.750
And then, so...
00:55:57.057 --> 00:56:07.523
this time I had before I went to Scotland, the Bishop Wainwright said, well, look, we need you to work with, we'd like you to work with the Relief Society person who was Doris, so I knew Doris very well.
00:56:08.146 --> 00:56:14.048
And then we, the job was to drive Doris to Sheffield, which is another stake.
00:56:14.590 --> 00:56:15.791
And it was the Bishop's Storehouse.
00:56:16.291 --> 00:56:21.476
And we were, there's like a mini supermarket underneath the foundations of that building in Sheffield.
00:56:21.956 --> 00:56:29.302
And we would push it like a trolley, as they call it in UK, a shopping cart around that supermarket kind of thing.
00:56:29.422 --> 00:56:36.509
And we would then collect food for members in the ward, in the ward that I was in at the time, in the Huddersfield stake.
00:56:36.708 --> 00:56:40.391
And we would collect all that food for about 20 families, Jim.
00:56:40.431 --> 00:56:49.621
And these are families who were struggling financially, who were on welfare, who the bishop had identified as being in need.
00:56:50.181 --> 00:56:53.666
And I worked for six weeks before I came to Scotland with Doris.
00:56:54.407 --> 00:56:56.128
And it was like a weekly thing.
00:56:56.148 --> 00:56:59.012
And I did the driving and I put the stuff into the cart.
00:56:59.411 --> 00:57:04.436
And then we would deliver parcels of food to those members who were in need.
00:57:05.057 --> 00:57:14.697
And it was amazing to be able to see their faces when we knocked on the door and say, hey, here, we've got you some provisions.
00:57:14.757 --> 00:57:15.637
So I've got you some food.
00:57:15.958 --> 00:57:19.346
And these were fairly big boxes.
00:57:19.365 --> 00:57:21.789
There were sometimes two or three boxes because they were families.
00:57:22.731 --> 00:57:57.581
00:57:57.681 --> 00:57:58.963
So these are...
00:57:59.724 --> 00:58:01.467
And we could go on forever.
00:58:01.487 --> 00:58:02.969
The podcast is not long enough, frankly.
00:58:03.010 --> 00:58:19.034
But the list of qualities and attributes and blessings that the church, through its organization and through its members, that it continues to provide and deliver to its members is just extraordinary.
00:58:19.074 --> 00:58:23.021
And I could talk all day, frankly, about so many...
00:58:23.521 --> 00:58:25.244
wonderful experiences like that.
00:58:25.264 --> 00:58:27.126
And I've shared, you know, a couple of insights.
00:58:27.547 --> 00:58:45.907
And just in kind of wrapping up my thoughts here at this stage in that conversation, these experiences, Jim, for me, who has gone through all that personal, emotional changes, the interest from the leaders, the support from the leaders, the belief in me that I could be something that I, you know, more than I thought I was of myself.
00:58:46.648 --> 00:58:53.983
And then to provide It's not enough, I think, just to have the word, the conversation, someone sitting in front of you and saying, hey, you can do these things.
00:58:54.764 --> 00:58:55.625
You have to do it.
00:58:55.865 --> 00:59:00.552
You have to get up, get your ass off, you know, the seat, right?
00:59:01.715 --> 00:59:03.538
Get out there and serve.
00:59:04.179 --> 00:59:09.547
And in that service, and this is the thing that saved me, that changed me.
00:59:09.588 --> 00:59:14.856
In that acting on the advising council that I got, Ian, you can do it.
00:59:15.356 --> 00:59:15.938
Now go do it.
00:59:16.353 --> 00:59:21.219
these are the things that you need to do to change how you feel about yourself and have some purpose and meaning in life.
00:59:21.699 --> 00:59:23.340
Here's, you know, you do it through service.
00:59:24.041 --> 00:59:30.047
You go help others and you don't have to wait to be saved to go save someone else.
00:59:30.748 --> 00:59:33.090
The saving of someone else is what actually saves you.
00:59:33.130 --> 00:59:34.831
And that's what happened to me.
00:59:34.891 --> 00:59:40.978
So I'm not anywhere near healed at this stage, you know, with, you know, 17, 18 years old.
00:59:42.679 --> 00:59:56.588
But all those service services, opportunities that I had to help others actually was the thing that healed me, that changed me, that transformed me, that gave me purpose and gave me self-esteem, gave me some confidence.
00:59:57.047 --> 00:59:59.391
I was thought, wow, I can do this.
00:59:59.592 --> 01:00:01.014
I can actually help someone.
01:00:01.034 --> 01:00:02.956
I didn't think I could help anyone.
01:00:02.996 --> 01:00:05.101
I couldn't even help myself in certain areas.
01:00:06.001 --> 01:00:07.724
And then people thought, Ian, thank you.
01:00:07.764 --> 01:00:10.809
And I'm like, wow, I can actually, I can do this.
01:00:11.650 --> 01:00:18.480
And when you start to learn that you can do it yourself without, you know, someone can say they believe in you and you can do it.
01:00:18.519 --> 01:00:19.742
That's one thing that's important.
01:00:20.141 --> 01:00:29.775
But when you see it and you experience it yourself, that you can actually achieve certain things and help others and be successful.
01:00:30.617 --> 01:00:30.878
Yeah.
01:00:31.010 --> 01:00:32.211
in helping others.
01:00:32.853 --> 01:00:35.980
And you see how that transforms their lives and how grateful they are.
01:00:36.019 --> 01:00:39.146
It was, it was, there were times I cried.
01:00:39.166 --> 01:00:45.398
I, you know, I'd been bed at night, I'd pray and I'd cry and I'd open my heart and I would be so grateful.
01:00:45.980 --> 01:00:53.869
And I felt the spirit and I believe the spirit and I still feel that same spirit today is, you know, when I serve and give of others, that's a universal spirit.
01:00:53.949 --> 01:01:11.856
I don't think that's necessarily unique to the church, but that's the thing, Jim, that transformed me that, you know, the church was the vehicle, the structure, the organization, the members and commitment, devotion, um, provided the, um, the leadership, the support, the direction, the experience for someone like me.
01:01:11.876 --> 01:01:22.744
And then the doing bit, the service bit was the thing that, um, had a, extraordinary impact to me and the spirituality that came from that.
01:01:23.364 --> 01:01:28.010
And then it affects how you feel about yourself, what you think about yourself.
01:01:28.811 --> 01:01:32.076
And you start to feel you've got worth and value.
01:01:32.135 --> 01:01:37.523
And then you realize that you're a child of God, that you've got this value, this purpose.
01:01:38.023 --> 01:01:44.793
And so the church does that, all of that that I've tried to communicate.
01:01:44.833 --> 01:01:55.405
And it's difficult for me to articulate and communicate these things because they're very, you know, they're quite emotional for me and it's difficult for me to describe that in words.
01:01:56.447 --> 01:02:19.123
You have to experience it yourself and I know you have, but I would say that is one area of, in my opinion, the most significant area that the church does, continues to do and I'm so, so grateful for all the members in the church, past and present, who have had an extraordinary experience impact on my life.
01:02:19.764 --> 01:02:20.664
I haven't forgotten them.
01:02:20.724 --> 01:02:21.827
I hope they haven't forgotten me.
01:02:22.067 --> 01:02:23.268
I certainly haven't forgotten them.
01:02:23.289 --> 01:02:32.579
And these impressions, these spiritual, spiritual experience lead this indelible, um, eternal, not just in this life, but internal impression upon our various souls.
01:02:33.000 --> 01:02:35.342
And I will never forget these things.
01:02:35.864 --> 01:02:36.784
I don't want to forget them.
01:02:37.146 --> 01:02:38.286
I will always remember them.
01:02:38.606 --> 01:02:39.588
I remember them often.
01:02:39.628 --> 01:02:43.713
And, um, they have transformed my life.
01:02:43.733 --> 01:02:56.266
So I, you know, I, These are the extraordinary blessings that the church brings into people's lives.
01:02:56.487 --> 01:03:09.463
And I just want our listeners to, I know they know that already, but I just want to, even though I'm out of the church, I cannot and will not ever forget or let go of those experiences.
01:03:09.722 --> 01:03:15.190
It's who I am, it's who I want to be, and it shaped the very core of my being and my soul.
01:03:16.898 --> 01:03:20.923
I think those are great last words here for this podcast.
01:03:21.023 --> 01:03:22.525
I think that sums it up nicely.
01:03:22.545 --> 01:03:25.068
I agree with everything you said.
01:03:25.088 --> 01:03:27.172
I really appreciate all of those stories.
01:03:28.233 --> 01:03:33.981
And I'm just so grateful that we get a chance to talk about this kind of thing.
01:03:35.443 --> 01:03:42.534
I just think it's really important that we step back every once in a while and recognize why it is we're doing this.
01:03:43.489 --> 01:03:49.237
Why it is we talk about the church, why it is that we're so focused on this, it's because we love this church.
01:03:50.239 --> 01:03:52.681
It's because this church has blessed our lives.
01:03:52.762 --> 01:03:55.105
This church is a force for good.
01:03:55.144 --> 01:04:01.512
And so I'm very grateful to hear those stories and to share that with you.
01:04:01.753 --> 01:04:11.525
And I'm very grateful to everybody who takes the time to listen to us every week, to hear these stories, because it helps us more than you know.
01:04:11.905 --> 01:04:19.673
The feedback that we get from you just, it just means more to us than you know.
01:04:19.693 --> 01:04:22.155
I don't know how to describe it, but I'm so grateful for it.
01:04:23.097 --> 01:04:29.722
So with that, Ian, do you have any other parting or summation words?
01:04:30.664 --> 01:04:31.284
I don't.
01:04:31.485 --> 01:04:31.784
I don't.
01:04:31.965 --> 01:04:34.007
And I also want to say I want to thank you.
01:04:34.068 --> 01:04:36.050
And I just really appreciate this conversation.
01:04:36.070 --> 01:04:39.152
And I hope to have many more conversations like this as well.
01:04:39.213 --> 01:04:44.918
Because as I said earlier, There's so many great things that the church does, and we forget that.
01:04:44.938 --> 01:04:49.847
It's got all these challenges and problems, but it does so many great things, and I'm so grateful.
01:04:50.268 --> 01:04:51.610
And I want the church to improve.
01:04:51.952 --> 01:04:52.853
I don't want it to go away.
01:04:52.893 --> 01:04:56.586
The things I described, I want it to grow.
01:04:56.806 --> 01:05:00.110
I want all of what I've described to grow and expand and continue.
01:05:00.210 --> 01:05:02.032
I know you can get that in other churches and I get that.
01:05:02.572 --> 01:05:08.577
So I want the church to thrive in a very positive, in a very inclusive, in a very constructive way.
01:05:08.998 --> 01:05:11.380
So I'm very, very grateful to you, Jim, for having these conversations.
01:05:11.500 --> 01:05:15.463
As I said, you know, we've got a long, long list of wonderful experiences in the church.
01:05:16.083 --> 01:05:17.045
I'm grateful to our listeners.
01:05:18.005 --> 01:05:21.768
We appreciate you, all of you out there listening to us and being patient with us.
01:05:21.829 --> 01:05:22.228
Thank you.
01:05:22.248 --> 01:05:32.108
And we are excited to share these experiences And we look forward to seeing you or being with you next week from Jim and I on Inside Out.
01:05:32.248 --> 01:05:33.150
Thank you for joining us.
01:05:34.293 --> 01:05:34.835
God bless.
01:05:34.956 --> 01:05:36.239
Love to you all.
01:05:36.981 --> 01:05:37.521
Thank you, Jim.
01:05:38.103 --> 01:05:40.829
Thank you, Ian.
