ABOUT THIS EPISODE
In this episode of In The Treehouse, host Michael Conner sits down with Joseph Powell, founder of Bubble Rock Advisors, to discuss his entrepreneurial journey from aspiring baseball player to accountant and business owner.
Joseph shares his story of shifting dreams, finding his competitive drive in unexpected places, and his passion for helping small businesses navigate their finances.
1. Small Wins Build Big Momentum
Joseph emphasizes the power of celebrating small victories. Whether in baseball, sales, or business, recognizing incremental progress creates momentum that drives long-term success.
His philosophy aligns with the idea that success isn’t just about big milestones but the small, consistent steps taken daily.
2. Sales Lessons from Maximum Security
Before entering the accounting world, Joseph worked as a prison guard, where he learned the art of communication and persuasion.
His experience of managing convicted felons without force taught him valuable sales skills—asking the right questions, building trust, and guiding people toward the best decisions for themselves.
3. Navigating the Changing Landscape of Accounting
With the accounting industry facing an aging workforce and a shortage of new professionals, Joseph sees both challenge and opportunity.
His firm, Bubble Rock Advisors, thrives by offering personalized service rather than treating clients like numbers in a large corporate system.
He believes businesses today need more than compliance—they need strategic financial guidance.
4. The Power of Buying vs. Starting from Scratch
Joseph shares a compelling insight into business acquisitions: 90% of businesses acquired after five years in operation succeed, compared to the high failure rate of startups.
He discusses his recent acquisitions, including a firm in Chicago, and highlights what makes a business worth buying—such as clean financials, sustainable growth, and a scalable client base.
5. Building a Business That Gives Back
Beyond financial success, Joseph aspires to build a business that allows him to give generously to his community.
He and Michael discuss the joy of reaching a point where giving—whether to charitable causes, employees, or struggling individuals—becomes effortless and fulfilling.
Joseph Powell’s journey is a testament to resilience, adaptability, and the power of intentional growth. From competitive baseball to financial strategy, he has applied his drive to every stage of his career.
His insights on scaling, acquisitions, and client relationships offer valuable lessons for business owners looking to grow.
As he continues expanding Bubble Rock Advisors, his story serves as inspiration for anyone striving to turn their vision into reality—one small win at a time.
