ABOUT THIS EPISODE
Could it be that what we pray or hold intention for now has the power to affect the experience of others many years ago, such as relieving their suffering or willing that they are held in light through what became recorded as a perilous situation? In this episode, we ponder whether prayers and focused intention can affect past events. We compare perspectives from Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, and other traditions, discuss ideas from quantum entanglement, and even mention of parallel universes and the multiverse, and discuss the limited scientific studies that have explored the effectiveness of retrospective intercession.
Whether our belief is that God or a greater power transcends time and space, or that quantum entanglement is unconstrained by time boundaries, we conclude that praying for the past is something that we might want to take seriously.
With this in mind, we contemplate the implications, and especially the important realisation that because we have the ability to pray and send intention with hindsight for some whose unfolding circumstances weren’t fully appreciated at the time, it's all the more important that we do so. Together with talking through our potential role as “prayer angels,” we suggest some good practice guidelines that we might want to bear in mind when holding intention retrospectively.
Suggested Intention Focus for this week
This week, as we reflect on the potential power of retrospective prayer and intention holding, we suggest holding as our main intention:
When praying or holding intention for events and people retrospectively, I resolve to honour the free will of those who are the object of my intention, recognising that I may not change history, but that my prayers can move hearts and minds.
Please join us in holding this.

00:00:03.888 --> 00:00:08.527
Hello, I'm Ellen Binns, coming today from Wheaton, Illinois in the USA.
00:00:08.956 --> 00:00:13.327
Welcome to IMPACT, a podcast about how we can each bring about real change in
00:00:13.327 --> 00:00:16.108
the world and getting practical and making that happen.
00:00:16.613 --> 00:00:20.017
And hello, I'm Clive Johnson, coming today from Leon C. in the UK.
00:00:20.497 --> 00:00:24.877
A special welcome if you're listening for the first time, and a big thank you to our new subscribers.
00:00:25.399 --> 00:00:29.137
Each week we look at one aspect of how we can connect our hearts to offer healing
00:00:29.137 --> 00:00:32.777
for others with our collective intention, prayers, and meditation,
00:00:33.288 --> 00:00:36.817
and go behind the headlines of a critical happening in our world that needs
00:00:36.817 --> 00:00:38.275
our attention right now.
00:00:38.952 --> 00:00:44.467
In today's episode, we take one of these regular deep dives to more fully understand
00:00:44.467 --> 00:00:48.902
and tune in with something many of us, and I pretty much guarantee most of us,
00:00:49.401 --> 00:00:54.597
may know only a little about, and see where we might hone in with our prayers and intentions.
00:00:55.032 --> 00:00:59.369
And as we record, it's September 23rd, 2026.
00:00:59.897 --> 00:01:05.261
So officially autumn or fall in the Northern Hemisphere and spring in the Southern.
00:01:05.568 --> 00:01:08.687
Beginning to feel a little bit autumnal where I am actually.
00:01:08.687 --> 00:01:12.830
I haven't noticed many leaves falling yet, but that will happen soon, I'm sure.
00:01:13.504 --> 00:01:18.497
But you know, a lot of our listeners are in the Southern Hemisphere. So happy spring to you.
00:01:19.237 --> 00:01:21.997
Indeed. Both are good times of year, aren't they?
00:01:22.657 --> 00:01:28.787
I think. So a couple of weeks ago when we focused on 9-11, we raised the intriguing
00:01:28.787 --> 00:01:33.495
possibility that we may be able to send in tension and pray retrospectively.
00:01:34.180 --> 00:01:38.457
In other words, to have our attention set on the circumstances being faced by
00:01:38.457 --> 00:01:41.076
people and events that have already played out.
00:01:41.988 --> 00:01:46.635
We offered some examples in our episode that we did on 9-11 relating to what
00:01:46.635 --> 00:01:49.109
happened on that day 25 years ago.
00:01:49.469 --> 00:01:54.055
In this episode, we explore the possibility that retrospective prayer works.
00:01:54.502 --> 00:01:58.555
Consider what different faith traditions have to say on the matter and reflect
00:01:58.555 --> 00:02:01.725
on the implications for how we approach intention-holding and prayer.
00:02:01.725 --> 00:02:05.665
And I imagine when we're talking about prayer here, probably some of the same
00:02:06.105 --> 00:02:11.950
ideas around entanglement being transcendent of time and space, essentially.
00:02:12.443 --> 00:02:16.045
Are going to apply as well. Certainly, we know they would not transcend,
00:02:16.045 --> 00:02:20.461
can certainly defy the rules of normal travel across space.
00:02:21.154 --> 00:02:27.390
So, what are we talking about? To start with, we should clarify what we're talking about.
00:02:27.981 --> 00:02:31.765
One distinction that we should make is between retrospective prayers that are
00:02:31.765 --> 00:02:35.533
intended to change an already settled historical fact.
00:02:36.062 --> 00:02:40.554
For example, asking that an accident that's known to have occurred to not occur,
00:02:41.019 --> 00:02:44.985
and separately, prayers that will for help, grace, protection,
00:02:44.985 --> 00:02:48.026
or mercy, or support to be given at an earlier moment,
00:02:48.502 --> 00:02:51.253
for people or indeed any sentient being.
00:02:52.019 --> 00:02:56.745
In this case, for those who have faith, a fundamental understanding may be that
00:02:56.745 --> 00:02:59.480
God is not limited by linear times.
00:03:00.317 --> 00:03:04.031
It's this second meaning that we'll mainly be talking about in this episode,
00:03:04.582 --> 00:03:05.705
and that's a perspective that
00:03:05.705 --> 00:03:09.761
doesn't require us imagining a past that's continually being rewritten.
00:03:10.348 --> 00:03:13.631
However, we will consider that possibility too.
00:03:14.407 --> 00:03:19.248
So, what do faith traditions have to say about retrospective prayer?
00:03:19.904 --> 00:03:24.255
One useful starting point for our inquiry might be to look at what the major
00:03:24.255 --> 00:03:28.405
faith traditions have to say about the possibility that time can be transcended
00:03:28.405 --> 00:03:30.701
in how prayers are received and enacted.
00:03:31.299 --> 00:03:34.985
Notions of God's ability to transcend time and space may apply,
00:03:34.985 --> 00:03:40.848
especially if we see them as intermediary for hearing and responding to our prayers.
00:03:41.494 --> 00:03:45.604
We realize that not all listeners will associate with this idea,
00:03:46.150 --> 00:03:50.815
and this includes some whose faith doesn't personalize God or have comparable
00:03:50.815 --> 00:03:54.573
notions of divinity to, say, those of the Abrahamic faiths.
00:03:55.268 --> 00:03:59.825
We're also limiting our attention to a notion of prayer that involves a level
00:03:59.825 --> 00:04:05.177
of co-partnering with or petitioning the divine with a specific request.
00:04:05.887 --> 00:04:11.587
We know that some notions of prayer and specifically more secular descriptions of intention-holding
00:04:11.999 --> 00:04:16.695
suggest that what we will for happens much more directly, for example,
00:04:16.695 --> 00:04:22.355
between the energetic fields, consciousness, or hearts and souls of two individuals.
00:04:23.033 --> 00:04:28.182
Yet with this view too, intention-sending might have effect retrospectively.
00:04:28.795 --> 00:04:34.130
Here, ideas around entanglement in quantum mechanics may be interesting to consider.
00:04:34.666 --> 00:04:38.323
This is a concept that we've occasionally spoken about in past episodes,
00:04:38.735 --> 00:04:44.529
the curious condition in which two or more particles share one joint quantum state.
00:04:44.859 --> 00:04:49.565
So measurements on them show correlations that cannot be explained as each particle
00:04:49.565 --> 00:04:51.924
carrying their own independent properties.
00:04:52.643 --> 00:04:57.113
This phenomenon can exist across very large distances in the cosmos,
00:04:57.478 --> 00:05:00.532
challenging ordinary ideas about locality.
00:05:01.182 --> 00:05:06.415
That is, the expectation that distant systems can influence one another only
00:05:06.415 --> 00:05:08.360
through nearby traveling causes.
00:05:09.081 --> 00:05:15.285
Entanglement, therefore, transcends distance in the sense that its correlations
00:05:15.285 --> 00:05:18.607
aren't weakened simply by separation in space.
00:05:18.984 --> 00:05:21.376
I'm going to say that again because I think that's really important.
00:05:21.712 --> 00:05:26.118
Correlations aren't weakened simply by separation in space.
00:05:26.706 --> 00:05:31.765
However, this in itself doesn't show that intention and prayers can alter an
00:05:31.765 --> 00:05:33.661
already recorded past event.
00:05:34.371 --> 00:05:40.175
Delayed choice experiments may look retro-casual, but standard quantum physics
00:05:40.175 --> 00:05:44.704
explains their correlations without backward-in-time signaling or causation.
00:05:45.000 --> 00:05:49.267
It doesn't preclude this, but it doesn't assume it either.
00:05:50.045 --> 00:05:55.257
Yeah, it's not proven, is it? No. I guess it's very hard to prove. It's not possible.
00:05:55.989 --> 00:06:02.035
But there is some interesting stuff happening around this, and they're relating
00:06:02.035 --> 00:06:06.419
that entanglement and non-locality to time traveling.
00:06:06.866 --> 00:06:08.945
And this is where we— So, yeah.
00:06:09.560 --> 00:06:14.475
Yeah. This is where the whole idea of theoretical physics gets interesting,
00:06:14.475 --> 00:06:18.680
isn't it? But there are things we don't believe we can prove.
00:06:19.005 --> 00:06:22.912
Right. wherever you can design the experiments that are going to satisfy others.
00:06:23.650 --> 00:06:27.574
But we need to hold open these possibilities, really.
00:06:28.326 --> 00:06:32.585
So what about the different faith traditions? What do they have to say about
00:06:32.585 --> 00:06:35.065
praying for past events and indeed
00:06:35.065 --> 00:06:39.628
the transcendent nature of God or other powers of work in the cosmos?
00:06:40.912 --> 00:06:46.907
In Judaism, classical rabbinic teaching doesn't restrict but appears to criticize prayers for the past.
00:06:47.611 --> 00:06:53.387
Mishnah Birakot 9 verse 3 calls a request to alter an event that has already
00:06:53.387 --> 00:06:55.355
happened, a vain prayer,
00:06:55.953 --> 00:07:00.527
giving examples such as praying that a known pregnancy result be different or
00:07:00.527 --> 00:07:03.392
that cries already heard shouldn't be a concern.
00:07:04.060 --> 00:07:09.137
The underlying emphasis is to accept reality. while prayer may still express
00:07:09.137 --> 00:07:14.312
grief, repentance, compassion, or a wish to respond in a godly manner in the present moment.
00:07:15.072 --> 00:07:20.291
Notably, the focus in this teaching is more on wanting to change something we don't like.
00:07:20.970 --> 00:07:26.107
And despite the restriction, in Jewish belief, there is at least one sense in
00:07:26.107 --> 00:07:28.656
which the past can be changed.
00:07:29.248 --> 00:07:35.207
This is where teshuvah, that is repentance or return, cannot not erase a historical
00:07:35.207 --> 00:07:40.837
act, but it can transform its moral and spiritual meaning by changing a person's
00:07:40.837 --> 00:07:43.813
present life, repairing harm where possible,
00:07:44.376 --> 00:07:46.761
and reorienting their relationship with God.
00:07:47.191 --> 00:07:51.367
I think there's a similar concept in the so-called wisdom teaching of Christianity
00:07:51.367 --> 00:07:55.364
as well, the idea of transforming the whole human being.
00:07:55.997 --> 00:08:00.397
And indeed, among Christian denominations, there's no single universal position
00:08:00.397 --> 00:08:03.287
on whether prayers can have impact on earlier times.
00:08:03.867 --> 00:08:07.607
In the way that there is a widespread support for prayers having impact on what
00:08:07.607 --> 00:08:10.015
may be happening now or in the future.
00:08:10.967 --> 00:08:15.976
Catholic and some other theologians argue that, since God is eternal,
00:08:16.435 --> 00:08:23.012
he, she can know a later prayer and apply its intended benefit at an earlier point in time.
00:08:24.086 --> 00:08:27.221
While some theologians reject the idea of retrospective prayer,
00:08:27.824 --> 00:08:32.840
the Catholic Church itself has made no definitive ruling on prayer's efficacy.
00:08:33.479 --> 00:08:39.461
Logos, the originating word or vibration, if you like the creating principle
00:08:39.461 --> 00:08:41.851
or divine intention, might also
00:08:41.851 --> 00:08:46.761
be seen as not just happening in the beginning or in the eternal past,
00:08:47.296 --> 00:08:50.017
but as being alive and creating now.
00:08:50.993 --> 00:08:58.155
In traditional Christian belief, it is, after all, timeless The same today, yesterday, and forever.
00:08:59.182 --> 00:09:04.172
We could say a lot about this, such as how those who are in Christ can play
00:09:04.172 --> 00:09:09.572
their part in the continuing creation and power of Logos, complete with its
00:09:09.572 --> 00:09:11.466
ability to transcend time.
00:09:12.058 --> 00:09:17.170
However, that would open up some pretty deep theological and philosophical arguments
00:09:17.350 --> 00:09:19.312
and might need to wait for another day.
00:09:19.759 --> 00:09:25.227
Indeed, in my case, for another brain, I think. Yes, I believe it would.
00:09:25.512 --> 00:09:28.842
Yes, it can kind of bend the mind, all of this.
00:09:29.262 --> 00:09:32.571
It can. And it's interesting, actually, when you do start looking at,
00:09:33.139 --> 00:09:37.040
I mean, theologians often are philosophers, aren't they?
00:09:37.699 --> 00:09:45.332
They may be inspired to offer a view or an exposition on a scripture,
00:09:45.332 --> 00:09:49.999
for example, but at the end of the day, a lot of this comes down to thought, what they believe.
00:09:50.670 --> 00:09:53.182
Exactly, and it's one of those things that you think about, and you think.
00:09:53.862 --> 00:09:59.656
If God, if the divine is omnipotent, then yeah, this should be able to happen,
00:09:59.900 --> 00:10:05.662
but then it's so difficult for us to really imagine it in our limited human minds.
00:10:05.662 --> 00:10:10.378
Time itself, I think, is a difficult concept for us to wrap our minds around,
00:10:10.761 --> 00:10:15.572
as far as what physics, quantum mechanics is finding out about time,
00:10:15.572 --> 00:10:19.562
and, well, like we said, we could do a whole other episode on that.
00:10:19.562 --> 00:10:27.102
And I think also a lot of, certainly my experience, many people I talk with
00:10:27.102 --> 00:10:29.020
from Christian faith particularly.
00:10:30.282 --> 00:10:36.152
Do tend to not necessarily restrict their understanding, but don't go very far
00:10:36.152 --> 00:10:42.348
beyond the idea of, yes, we can receive spirit and we can be immersed in spirit and in that way,
00:10:42.842 --> 00:10:45.663
have inspiration and a sense of God's presence.
00:10:46.261 --> 00:10:50.812
But the idea is that there are different layers of consciousness that we can
00:10:50.812 --> 00:10:54.182
experience, some of which are transcendent.
00:10:54.182 --> 00:10:59.682
The idea that we are more than our physical bodies and this experience of Holy
00:10:59.682 --> 00:11:03.291
Spirit, let's call it, or what's going on within our waking consciousness.
00:11:04.623 --> 00:11:11.103
The fact we may have ethereal bodies, for example, kind of doesn't really get mentioned very much.
00:11:12.563 --> 00:11:13.823
One of the reasons I find things like the.
00:11:15.823 --> 00:11:19.923
Story of the transfiguration of Jesus, and indeed there was a Moses when he
00:11:19.923 --> 00:11:23.956
came down the mountain, his face was shining like pure light.
00:11:24.565 --> 00:11:28.203
I find these very interesting because they're pointing to something that's beyond
00:11:28.203 --> 00:11:32.477
what we understand and ordinarily experience.
00:11:33.357 --> 00:11:36.593
And it's good to stretch our minds like that and our beliefs.
00:11:36.593 --> 00:11:40.923
So that's kind of the point of our episode today, to get people to think outside
00:11:40.923 --> 00:11:43.724
the time box, outside the clock. How about that?
00:11:44.268 --> 00:11:51.833
Brilliant. So, furthermore, according to the timeless eternity view of some
00:11:51.833 --> 00:11:58.007
theologians, in which God is timeless, knowing all moments of history together,
00:11:58.605 --> 00:12:03.413
God could have eternally known that we would later pray and could have included
00:12:03.413 --> 00:12:06.709
that prayer among the means by which consolation,
00:12:07.342 --> 00:12:13.199
courage, protection, or grace was given at a moment that, from humans' eyes,
00:12:13.466 --> 00:12:15.260
took place in the world. the past.
00:12:16.062 --> 00:12:21.291
According to this view, a prayer made now could be understood as a real petition
00:12:21.291 --> 00:12:24.932
for mercy at a suffering person's earlier moment.
00:12:25.664 --> 00:12:32.601
We can pray for those held in Nazi concentration camps, for children awaiting evacuation in wartime,
00:12:33.216 --> 00:12:38.481
and our now past ancestors who suffered ill health, lost babies at birth,
00:12:38.760 --> 00:12:41.041
or who struggled to feed their families.
00:12:41.641 --> 00:12:47.201
However, other Christian theologians object that a prayer cannot make what is
00:12:47.201 --> 00:12:49.563
known to have happened unhappen.
00:12:50.248 --> 00:12:55.601
They distinguish God's transcendence of time from what they see as enabling
00:12:55.601 --> 00:12:57.534
contradictions in history.
00:12:58.228 --> 00:13:02.761
However, this doesn't say anything about the meaning of retrospective prayer
00:13:02.761 --> 00:13:08.271
that we're focused on, that if we appeal for, say, someone's suffering to be
00:13:08.271 --> 00:13:10.233
relieved in a past situation,
00:13:10.773 --> 00:13:15.851
God can honor that prayer, even though we do not know what the experience of
00:13:15.851 --> 00:13:18.708
the person we are praying for actually was.
00:13:19.392 --> 00:13:23.055
The event happened, or an experience was experienced.
00:13:23.676 --> 00:13:28.921
Yet whether or not that experience was influenced by what we pray for now is
00:13:28.921 --> 00:13:31.513
not something such critics can be sure about.
00:13:32.291 --> 00:13:36.831
That is, not if they really trust that God is capable of enabling anything.
00:13:37.551 --> 00:13:39.500
It's interesting, isn't it? Mm-hmm.
00:13:40.421 --> 00:13:45.092
I was thinking just then, I was reminded of a beautiful illustration which stuck
00:13:45.092 --> 00:13:51.462
in my mind, this idea of timeless eternity, which I must admit before researching
00:13:51.462 --> 00:13:54.872
this episode is not something I'd come across.
00:13:54.872 --> 00:14:00.602
But a while ago, I took part in a series of workshops led by a Jewish Shabad
00:14:00.602 --> 00:14:03.550
rabbi based in Montreal on Kabbalah.
00:14:04.882 --> 00:14:08.892
Which is a topic I love, the Jewish mystical school, I think he was talking
00:14:08.892 --> 00:14:15.622
about life reviews, near-death experiences, and the idea that in a kind of mystical
00:14:15.622 --> 00:14:19.312
experience, you can see a lot of things all at once. Everything becomes very clear.
00:14:19.724 --> 00:14:23.722
But at the same time, you can be focused on a particular snapshot of what was
00:14:23.722 --> 00:14:27.445
going on in your life. So in other words, you could put it in context with everything.
00:14:28.217 --> 00:14:35.272
And he described this as what he thought would be like if you had an old spall
00:14:35.272 --> 00:14:43.204
of movie film, 16mm or 8mm or whatever, which I guess younger listeners might not know.
00:14:44.922 --> 00:14:51.142
Look it up. Look it up. But the way that a moving image would get projected,
00:14:51.142 --> 00:14:56.522
of course, was a whole series of snapshots, essentially, that I think 16 frames
00:14:56.522 --> 00:14:59.193
a second or something like that in an 8mm film.
00:15:00.151 --> 00:15:03.663
And her brain would fill in some of the gaps to create the movement.
00:15:04.017 --> 00:15:08.515
And he said it was a little bit like, so you have on this spool of film hundreds
00:15:08.515 --> 00:15:13.165
of individual snapshots, but of course you're seeing a moving picture as well.
00:15:13.165 --> 00:15:16.455
And he said it was almost like you can imagine a projectionist,
00:15:16.455 --> 00:15:22.975
again, concept from the past, where the film would be dropped on the floor and
00:15:22.975 --> 00:15:25.345
the whole spool would unravel.
00:15:25.345 --> 00:15:29.886
And you'd see all of these hundreds of little images at once,
00:15:30.558 --> 00:15:34.675
but know as well that there was the story, as it were, running through them.
00:15:34.675 --> 00:15:36.205
There was kind of like an essence.
00:15:36.646 --> 00:15:41.205
I thought that was a brilliant way of describing this. Because it almost gives
00:15:41.205 --> 00:15:46.995
you then, well, does God or can God, whatever your faith, see everything that way?
00:15:47.335 --> 00:15:51.035
And of course the answer has to be yes, if they are. Well, it's so confusing
00:15:51.035 --> 00:15:54.875
because, you know, there's the theory of predestiny.
00:15:55.235 --> 00:15:57.631
And then there's the theory of free choice.
00:15:58.155 --> 00:16:01.427
And I don't know where I stand on all that.
00:16:02.375 --> 00:16:08.115
Exactly. Now, in Islam, the concept of do-are is important. This is commonly
00:16:08.115 --> 00:16:13.150
understood as a real means or divine decree through which God brings about good.
00:16:13.794 --> 00:16:19.895
Many Sunni Islam accounts distinguish God's absolute eternal decree from conditional
00:16:19.895 --> 00:16:21.939
or apparent outcomes in human life.
00:16:22.450 --> 00:16:27.256
Prayer can then be one of a number of divinely ordained means associated with an outcome.
00:16:28.063 --> 00:16:32.057
However, this isn't usually framed as humans revising the past,
00:16:32.456 --> 00:16:37.454
but as God's timeless decree encompassing both the prayer and its result,
00:16:37.953 --> 00:16:41.721
similar to the Christian notion of timeless eternity that we've just mentioned.
00:16:42.853 --> 00:16:47.735
Hindu traditions present much diversity around the possibility to influence past experiences.
00:16:48.112 --> 00:16:51.647
Karma is often understood as being morally consequential across time,
00:16:52.141 --> 00:16:56.767
through which energetic imprints are rebalanced according to our current intentions and actions.
00:16:57.772 --> 00:17:01.957
How we think and act today can essentially remove any legacy of heaviness we
00:17:01.957 --> 00:17:03.611
carry from past actions.
00:17:04.529 --> 00:17:08.824
Significantly, too, in several major Hindu philosophical traditions,
00:17:09.295 --> 00:17:12.824
especially the Upanishads and Advaita Vedanta,
00:17:13.526 --> 00:17:21.740
the Atman, or eternal, unchanging, witnessing self, isn't considered to be located within physical time.
00:17:22.489 --> 00:17:27.257
Rather, it's understood to be beyond birth, death, and time.
00:17:27.257 --> 00:17:29.304
This is really our true high self.
00:17:31.132 --> 00:17:33.787
As such, this connection with
00:17:33.787 --> 00:17:37.918
the real essence of a person might be understood as transcending time.
00:17:38.243 --> 00:17:42.870
If we can appeal to the Atman through our prayers, typically for Hindus,
00:17:43.189 --> 00:17:44.988
with the intervention of a deity,
00:17:45.569 --> 00:17:50.178
logically, time shouldn't constrain the effectiveness of our appeal.
00:17:50.747 --> 00:17:54.648
There's no expiry date, as it were, on when we may pray.
00:17:55.381 --> 00:17:58.207
Buddhist traditionists tend to focus on the well-being, liberation,
00:17:58.207 --> 00:18:02.655
and the karmic welfare of beings rather than on reversing historical events.
00:18:03.270 --> 00:18:06.867
Generally, Buddhist doctrine doesn't see that a prayer out of now can travel
00:18:06.867 --> 00:18:09.615
back to alter someone's already lived suffering.
00:18:10.410 --> 00:18:11.847
Still, the state of bliss that's
00:18:11.847 --> 00:18:16.657
beyond the world of illusions has no time boundaries to constrain it.
00:18:17.417 --> 00:18:21.507
Despite these mixed and generally restrictive takes of the different faith traditions
00:18:21.507 --> 00:18:24.952
on the ability for prayers made now to have effect historically,
00:18:25.631 --> 00:18:30.790
many do accept that God or spiritual power can and does transcend time.
00:18:31.754 --> 00:18:36.301
Whether this power is understood to be a personalized creator or is perceived
00:18:36.301 --> 00:18:39.898
as an impersonal ground or unconditioned liberation,
00:18:40.583 --> 00:18:45.431
there's a common sense that there is an ultimate reality that's beyond ordinary
00:18:45.431 --> 00:18:48.553
time, space, and material limitations.
00:18:50.428 --> 00:18:55.484
Thus, Jews generally regard God as not being spatially bounded,
00:18:55.821 --> 00:19:00.053
while classical Christianity typically teaches that God is timeless,
00:19:00.505 --> 00:19:03.182
with time and space belonging to creation.
00:19:03.785 --> 00:19:09.621
Classical Islamic theology likewise describes Allah as being uncreated and unlike
00:19:09.621 --> 00:19:14.901
created things, taking various philosophical positions on the precise relationship
00:19:14.901 --> 00:19:18.524
between God, time, and the temporal world.
00:19:19.256 --> 00:19:25.191
Many Hindu schools regard Brahman as the ultimate reality beyond ordinary distinctions
00:19:25.191 --> 00:19:29.941
and change, with some devotional schools, understanding the supreme divine as
00:19:29.941 --> 00:19:33.372
being both transcendent of the cosmos and present with it.
00:19:33.934 --> 00:19:39.367
For Sikhs, this strong transcendence and immanence belief also applies,
00:19:39.680 --> 00:19:45.903
whereas for Buddhists, as we just mentioned, nirvana isn't produced by casual conditions.
00:19:46.520 --> 00:19:51.971
Also in Taoism, the Tao is an ultimate generative principle that precedes and
00:19:51.971 --> 00:19:56.137
underlies named things, rather than a personal creator god.
00:19:56.898 --> 00:20:01.241
The shared theme that we might note from all of these is that ultimate reality
00:20:01.241 --> 00:20:05.745
is not bound by chronological experience in the way that human lives are.
00:20:06.586 --> 00:20:10.920
If the traditions differ considerably on whether directing our prayers to past
00:20:10.920 --> 00:20:14.626
circumstances is either effective or even wise.
00:20:16.536 --> 00:20:21.221
So, what evidence is there to support the efficacy of retrospective prayer?
00:20:21.616 --> 00:20:25.161
Is there, then, any evidence that retrospective prayer can have effect?
00:20:25.556 --> 00:20:28.690
Here, there's a huge difficulty for researchers, as we mentioned earlier,
00:20:28.690 --> 00:20:32.418
to design experiments that allow this to be rigidly tested.
00:20:33.097 --> 00:20:36.899
Applying the trusted approaches of the scientific method is a problem.
00:20:37.712 --> 00:20:41.560
However, we might mention one or two examples of those who've tried.
00:20:42.356 --> 00:20:46.077
Perhaps the best-known example of such research is in clinical research.
00:20:46.588 --> 00:20:51.850
This is work undertaken by Israeli researcher Leonard Lebovici and reported
00:20:51.850 --> 00:20:54.854
in a 2001 edition of the British Medical Journal.
00:20:55.434 --> 00:21:00.780
In the trial he designed, Lebovici randomly assigned over 3,000 former patients
00:21:00.780 --> 00:21:06.490
who had experienced bloodstream infection years earlier to retrospective intercessionary
00:21:06.490 --> 00:21:08.652
prayer or control groups.
00:21:09.564 --> 00:21:16.582
The patient's infection records dated from 1990 to 1996, while prayers were said for them in 2000.
00:21:17.331 --> 00:21:21.250
The main finding of the study was that those who were prayed for by the prayer
00:21:21.250 --> 00:21:26.020
group had statistically shorter hospital stays and fever duration,
00:21:26.618 --> 00:21:31.000
but their mortality rates weren't significantly different to the control group.
00:21:31.819 --> 00:21:35.930
In other words, the study didn't provide sufficiently strong evidence that prayer
00:21:35.930 --> 00:21:40.137
changes the past if it offered some indication of effect.
00:21:41.155 --> 00:21:45.978
Linwa Taggart, who we've often mentioned in this podcast as a pioneer and prominent
00:21:45.978 --> 00:21:50.358
exponent of intention work, has also written and spoken about what she calls
00:21:50.358 --> 00:21:54.042
retro intention or time-traveling intention.
00:21:54.855 --> 00:21:56.628
This is the belief that an intention
00:21:56.628 --> 00:22:01.566
that we form now may affect a past physiological response or event.
00:22:02.198 --> 00:22:07.148
This includes applying intention in a therapy setting as part of her Heal the
00:22:07.148 --> 00:22:11.405
Path Past Model, which she developed with her husband, Brian Hubbard,
00:22:12.113 --> 00:22:16.598
and which includes focused intention exercises to help participants rewrite
00:22:16.598 --> 00:22:20.216
the emotional charge of past traumas that continue to affect them.
00:22:21.199 --> 00:22:25.979
McTaggart also cites research conducted by parapsychologist Dean Rading and
00:22:25.979 --> 00:22:30.109
Brazilian psychologist Fatima Regina Mercado and Wellington Zangari.
00:22:31.027 --> 00:22:35.699
In one experiment conducted by them, Brazilian Umbanda mediums sent healing
00:22:35.699 --> 00:22:41.719
intentions to physiological recording sessions that had occurred two months earlier in Las Vegas.
00:22:42.695 --> 00:22:47.019
The authors reported statistical differences in some involuntary measures between
00:22:47.019 --> 00:22:49.643
intended treatment and control periods.
00:22:50.537 --> 00:22:55.222
However, such claims remain highly contested in academic circles,
00:22:55.611 --> 00:23:00.986
and they haven't become widely accepted within mainstream psychology and clinical circles.
00:23:01.619 --> 00:23:06.479
This, in part, is due to the difficulty of establishing research methods that
00:23:06.479 --> 00:23:11.383
allow such experiments to stand up to logical scrutiny and easily be replicated.
00:23:11.992 --> 00:23:16.669
That, of course, is often the nature of anything that sits outside the bounds
00:23:16.669 --> 00:23:21.871
of normality, including what we understand as the boundaries of time and space.
00:23:22.636 --> 00:23:26.705
Yeah, don't you just wonder if in 20 years this is something that,
00:23:27.036 --> 00:23:29.909
you know, we couldn't conceive of AI.
00:23:30.194 --> 00:23:33.209
No. We couldn't, there's so many things we couldn't conceive of,
00:23:33.209 --> 00:23:39.226
or even phones that carried everything we need in our life in a small, tiny computer.
00:23:39.708 --> 00:23:43.639
So, I just wonder what the next few years are going to bring in this research.
00:23:43.639 --> 00:23:44.706
That's going to be interesting.
00:23:45.470 --> 00:23:50.319
So, given the mixed views among faith traditions and the limited evidence offered
00:23:50.319 --> 00:23:55.350
for retrospective prayer by researchers, can we then actually change past events?
00:23:56.137 --> 00:24:01.501
With the benefit of hindsight, we can obviously know what happened in particular circumstances.
00:24:02.046 --> 00:24:05.936
On first glance, this would appear to preclude the possibility that we could
00:24:05.936 --> 00:24:10.998
actually change past events. For example, in the case of what happened on 9-11,
00:24:11.497 --> 00:24:14.944
we know the planes were flown into the Twin Towers.
00:24:15.617 --> 00:24:20.886
Might it be possible that if many people, having sufficient sincerity and energy
00:24:20.886 --> 00:24:24.418
in their intention, prayed that those attacks didn't happen,
00:24:24.801 --> 00:24:27.860
even if those prayers were made after the event,
00:24:28.336 --> 00:24:31.426
that history would have been altered? Hmm.
00:24:32.422 --> 00:24:37.426
This, of course, is a question that we can't answer, since we can't assess whether
00:24:37.426 --> 00:24:41.576
the movement created by such prayer would have been sufficient to persuade the
00:24:41.576 --> 00:24:47.046
hijackers on those planes to change their intention, and so the course that played out.
00:24:47.587 --> 00:24:52.936
That people may in later years have prayed for what outcome given that they
00:24:52.936 --> 00:24:56.561
know that the attacks actually happen also seems unlikely.
00:24:57.159 --> 00:24:59.893
For most of us, it would defy logic to try.
00:25:00.535 --> 00:25:04.071
And those who might believe that changing past events might be possible,
00:25:04.698 --> 00:25:09.197
would not be able to name a specific event unless it had actually been reported
00:25:09.486 --> 00:25:16.033
or otherwise became known to them, such as through a premonition or some other supranational means.
00:25:16.685 --> 00:25:21.747
Once something is recorded in history, the outcome that played out is of course known.
00:25:22.345 --> 00:25:26.886
In other words, if it were possible to move the hearts and minds of the hijackers
00:25:26.886 --> 00:25:31.575
by praying at any time before and after what happened on 9-11,
00:25:32.225 --> 00:25:36.979
we would need to have a reason for holding attention for that specific situation and time,
00:25:38.083 --> 00:25:42.247
but logically wouldn't will for a different outcome if we already knew what
00:25:42.247 --> 00:25:44.237
had happened. Here's the loop.
00:25:44.910 --> 00:25:49.664
This may be what the rabbis we mentioned earlier might call a vain prayer.
00:25:50.497 --> 00:25:56.137
If we didn't know the outcome, but did know an event, then it could be that
00:25:56.137 --> 00:26:00.180
the outcome that resulted was influenced by the power of our later prayers.
00:26:01.457 --> 00:26:07.599
The catch-22 is that typically, if we know about an event, we're likely to also know the outcome.
00:26:08.221 --> 00:26:11.597
This is one reason this idea can be such a mind-bender.
00:26:12.381 --> 00:26:13.147
Yeah, yeah. Yeah.
00:26:14.649 --> 00:26:20.317
It's hard for us to imagine. It is. I actually was talking literally only
00:26:20.657 --> 00:26:24.442
earlier today, in fact, not on this particular topic, but she's raised,
00:26:24.692 --> 00:26:27.630
well, yeah, she did mention it earlier in the meeting I was in briefly,
00:26:27.891 --> 00:26:32.634
to a lady, and I'm sure she's not alone, who essentially had a premonition of 9-11.
00:26:33.028 --> 00:26:36.035
It was really quite strong and surprising and unusual for her.
00:26:36.755 --> 00:26:42.955
But yeah just just a day or two really before it all happened so there are people that do know,
00:26:43.542 --> 00:26:47.047
kind of well and maybe there were the people who had those premonitions and
00:26:47.047 --> 00:26:52.277
perhaps they said to somebody hey you know don't go to work today or you know
00:26:52.277 --> 00:26:55.397
so who knows what happened because of those premonitions that,
00:26:55.857 --> 00:26:59.343
inner feeling that tells you yeah absolutely,
00:27:00.038 --> 00:27:06.451
i've also wondered You know, you hear people tell stories and where they had,
00:27:07.134 --> 00:27:08.877
an energy to do something.
00:27:08.877 --> 00:27:11.267
They felt a calm about them.
00:27:11.598 --> 00:27:16.747
They, you know, they might think it was angels who was helping them.
00:27:16.747 --> 00:27:18.349
And it might have been. It could have been.
00:27:19.628 --> 00:27:26.297
Could it be this prayer? These prayers that, you know, we send back that they
00:27:26.297 --> 00:27:27.924
feel at the time? Who knows?
00:27:28.040 --> 00:27:32.869
I know it's beyond our logic. That is quite a thought, isn't it?
00:27:34.379 --> 00:27:39.006
Still, if we do believe that the energy we radiate can have both a powerful
00:27:39.006 --> 00:27:45.792
impact and transcend time, then we might accept that anything we ask for has or had effect,
00:27:46.320 --> 00:27:49.629
and so hearts and minds could have been convicted as a result.
00:27:50.767 --> 00:27:55.254
One implication of this seems to be that we may want to pray and hold in attention
00:27:55.498 --> 00:27:59.286
to potential events that we don't know about, any act of terrorism,
00:27:59.286 --> 00:28:02.631
for example, occurring anywhere and at any time,
00:28:03.078 --> 00:28:06.561
but not yet known about or being reported in the public domain.
00:28:07.762 --> 00:28:12.166
It's perfectly possible that the prayers of many on 9-11 itself did prevent
00:28:12.166 --> 00:28:16.778
other atrocities that we are unaware of, because they didn't then happen.
00:28:17.776 --> 00:28:21.766
For example, these might include prayers offered for passengers on other planes
00:28:21.766 --> 00:28:25.038
that may have been weaponized that weren't being reported,
00:28:25.688 --> 00:28:30.156
or plans for other terrorist action that in the event didn't happen because
00:28:30.156 --> 00:28:34.516
the terrorists had a change of heart or some event intervened to prevent their
00:28:34.516 --> 00:28:35.969
carrying out their plans.
00:28:36.840 --> 00:28:39.138
Of course, this is something we can never know.
00:28:40.363 --> 00:28:44.836
This is different to the kind of retrospective prayer where we now know where
00:28:44.836 --> 00:28:50.493
people were in a particular circumstance but don't know how they were reacting in the moment.
00:28:51.410 --> 00:28:55.776
Hence, we may ask that those on the plains or seeking to rescue those trapped
00:28:55.776 --> 00:29:00.952
in the towers are, or were, supported through their time of great fear,
00:29:01.109 --> 00:29:05.886
for example, or that those who die transitioned with serenity and gentleness.
00:29:05.886 --> 00:29:10.948
Exactly what you were saying, the feelings they may have had at the time.
00:29:12.301 --> 00:29:17.636
Perhaps even retrospective prayer for such situations is especially important,
00:29:18.129 --> 00:29:23.371
because at the actual time of the event, we and others who might offer prayers
00:29:23.679 --> 00:29:27.075
weren't necessarily aware of what was happening at the time.
00:29:27.945 --> 00:29:31.759
This kind of retrospective prayer might then be seen even as a responsibility
00:29:31.951 --> 00:29:34.865
for those of us who can offer it with the benefit of hindsight.
00:29:36.126 --> 00:29:39.777
In the case of the 9-11 attacks, to use this example once more,
00:29:40.230 --> 00:29:42.013
there was some knowledge of hijacks,
00:29:42.533 --> 00:29:46.373
taking place in real time, especially as phone messages were exchanged with
00:29:46.373 --> 00:29:47.873
some passengers on board the
00:29:47.873 --> 00:29:51.695
planes that had been hijacked after the first plane flew into the tower.
00:29:52.600 --> 00:29:57.093
However, what was happening generally occurred so quickly and so shockingly,
00:29:57.638 --> 00:30:01.823
that in the moment few people would have been engaged in praying for those on
00:30:01.823 --> 00:30:03.507
board the planes that crashed.
00:30:04.557 --> 00:30:09.873
Certainly, at the very moment, right until impact, it wasn't known that these
00:30:09.873 --> 00:30:11.587
crashes would actually occur,
00:30:12.115 --> 00:30:16.475
or whether the only planes where passenger telephone messages reported hijackings
00:30:16.736 --> 00:30:20.364
were the only ones that were, or were about to be, weaponized.
00:30:21.189 --> 00:30:26.738
What could be recognized and anticipated for in real time was what happened in the aftermath.
00:30:27.400 --> 00:30:31.673
For example, the terror of those escaping the towers, and for the courage and
00:30:31.673 --> 00:30:34.656
grave danger faced by rescue workers in their response.
00:30:35.463 --> 00:30:41.512
That very much could be prayed for in real time, even while events were still unfolding.
00:30:42.209 --> 00:30:45.583
We did say this was a mind-bender, but really interesting, isn't it?
00:30:45.583 --> 00:30:48.537
And potentially very important, as you say, that if people were,
00:30:49.355 --> 00:30:52.863
they had some comfort or they had some reassurance in the moment.
00:30:52.863 --> 00:30:55.838
Perhaps that's because people were praying later.
00:30:57.127 --> 00:31:02.239
You know, respective prayers were really important. So maybe we become angels
00:31:02.627 --> 00:31:07.143
if we're retrospective prayer is a way of being an angel. I just made that up.
00:31:08.891 --> 00:31:14.928
Okay. What we believe retrospective prayer can do is move individuals,
00:31:15.288 --> 00:31:19.143
irrespective of the time and intention or prayer is offered.
00:31:20.088 --> 00:31:25.620
This means that, energetically, they may be stirred by or made aware of what
00:31:25.620 --> 00:31:30.125
is being communicated to them, which may include healing energy,
00:31:30.676 --> 00:31:34.983
comforting, or a strong perception of what is the highest good.
00:31:35.772 --> 00:31:41.370
As such, we believe that the intentions we now communicate will have been received
00:31:41.370 --> 00:31:46.012
and heard in the past, as much as those willed for someone in a future event
00:31:46.389 --> 00:31:49.855
also have effect beyond what is happening in the current.
00:31:50.023 --> 00:31:54.109
Moment that said thinking of the future
00:31:54.440 --> 00:31:59.150
is a little different in the sense that actions mindsets and wills that are
00:31:59.150 --> 00:32:01.830
conditioned now may then enable
00:32:01.830 --> 00:32:06.311
or create the conditions for some desired future circumstance to occur,
00:32:07.001 --> 00:32:11.600
well a little outside the scope of this episode we might also mention the power
00:32:11.600 --> 00:32:16.590
of intention holding across parallel universes and the multiverse you know i
00:32:16.590 --> 00:32:21.316
love this stuff which disrupts conventional ideas about time and space,
00:32:21.951 --> 00:32:26.880
this includes the idea that the plane that we operate on and are conscious of
00:32:26.880 --> 00:32:30.374
is not the only dimension for what plays out in the cosmos,
00:32:31.041 --> 00:32:37.250
indeed there may be infinite possible universes and far deeper levels of consciousness
00:32:37.250 --> 00:32:42.740
and frequencies of existence of which we're unaware of not yet capable of bearing
00:32:42.740 --> 00:32:44.881
including some that transcend time,
00:32:45.625 --> 00:32:49.260
in a previous episode we looked at the theories about the multiverse and parallel
00:32:49.260 --> 00:32:55.342
universes and how these relate to the theoretical quantum physics entanglement and intention holding,
00:32:55.910 --> 00:32:59.340
we'll include the link for this in the show notes in case you want to listen
00:32:59.340 --> 00:33:03.428
back another mind bender right that was that was a good one yeah yeah.
00:33:04.246 --> 00:33:08.918
One common idea that relates to parallel universes is that different sequences
00:33:08.918 --> 00:33:12.025
of events can play out in multiple ways,
00:33:12.611 --> 00:33:19.148
both in the present linear time and historically, driven by many minute changes
00:33:19.148 --> 00:33:22.613
of intention that are occurring in every moment.
00:33:23.148 --> 00:33:27.414
This is a bit complex, which is why we gave it a deep dive in a special episode.
00:33:27.989 --> 00:33:32.424
And like much of what we've been talking about today, can be hard to get your head around.
00:33:33.539 --> 00:33:38.898
I do love the idea. There's some scientists who believe that everything is happening
00:33:38.898 --> 00:33:41.648
at the same time, the past, the present, the future.
00:33:41.648 --> 00:33:48.288
It's almost like a spiral that's laid next to each other. And there are people
00:33:48.288 --> 00:33:52.415
who feel like you can jump to different time zones and stuff. Yeah, yeah.
00:33:53.367 --> 00:33:58.016
It's fascinating, isn't it? So what might be the implications of all this?
00:33:58.704 --> 00:34:03.911
We might ask then about the implications for how we pray and hold intention.
00:34:04.514 --> 00:34:07.271
Are there any constraints that might limit what we can do?
00:34:07.909 --> 00:34:11.828
And might there be any guidelines we might want to keep in mind when praying
00:34:11.828 --> 00:34:14.190
or sending intention retrospectively?
00:34:15.421 --> 00:34:18.840
We've already mentioned that because we have the benefit of hindsight that others
00:34:18.840 --> 00:34:23.500
didn't have in the moment, one possible invitation we have is to see that we
00:34:23.500 --> 00:34:30.056
can pray for those whose situations we know about, even if what they were experiencing isn't known to us.
00:34:30.793 --> 00:34:35.220
This seems especially important for us to consider when we become aware of such
00:34:35.220 --> 00:34:38.722
incidents, including those that may have occurred very recently.
00:34:39.436 --> 00:34:43.540
For example, we may pray for the serene holding of individuals who have just
00:34:43.540 --> 00:34:48.380
become trapped under rubble caused by an earthquake, even if at the time of
00:34:48.380 --> 00:34:52.583
our prayer they may either have perished or been rescued.
00:34:53.297 --> 00:34:58.893
In other words, we needn't restrict our prayers to what we know or believe is happening now.
00:35:00.113 --> 00:35:04.050
In terms of how we might be guided in our prayers, one obvious principle that
00:35:04.050 --> 00:35:08.600
we believe still applies when praying retrospectively is respecting the free
00:35:08.600 --> 00:35:09.830
will of every individual.
00:35:10.457 --> 00:35:16.291
This means that we can appeal to hearts and minds but not override an individual's volition.
00:35:17.080 --> 00:35:21.463
If a dictator hears our appeal for mercy, yet chooses to ignore it,
00:35:21.904 --> 00:35:24.244
that is for their conscience to decide.
00:35:24.911 --> 00:35:30.160
Albeit, it's hard to imagine a conscience that refuses mercy not doing so without
00:35:30.160 --> 00:35:35.151
difficulty, if what we have willed for has stirred a measure of compassion within them.
00:35:36.412 --> 00:35:40.564
Since the free will principle underlies what we ask for, at least where people
00:35:40.564 --> 00:35:45.124
are involved at the center of our intentions, we cannot be sure that what we
00:35:45.124 --> 00:35:50.703
ask for now will move them to change a decision that they would otherwise have made.
00:35:51.541 --> 00:35:57.217
Yet, we might believe that such movements of heart and mind often will have turned their hand.
00:35:57.874 --> 00:36:03.545
We might also seek to pray or offer intention retrospectively without trying to dominate the past.
00:36:03.963 --> 00:36:08.479
For example, we might say, may the person we will intention for receive,
00:36:08.770 --> 00:36:12.074
or have received, we get trouble with our tenties here, which one we should
00:36:12.074 --> 00:36:17.582
use, every comfort, protection, and holding possible in that moment.
00:36:18.063 --> 00:36:23.834
Or, may they be healed, even if the healing only occurred when they took decisions
00:36:23.834 --> 00:36:26.399
of their own, perhaps at a later date.
00:36:27.232 --> 00:36:31.974
Another point of good practice when praying retrospectively might be that we
00:36:31.974 --> 00:36:37.797
remember to avoid judging what happened in the past because of how we do or don't pray.
00:36:37.977 --> 00:36:42.564
For example, believing that a tragedy happened because someone failed to pray
00:36:42.564 --> 00:36:45.884
adequately after the event. You don't want to get into that.
00:36:47.269 --> 00:36:51.824
Intuitively, another guideline we might consider when framing retrospective
00:36:51.824 --> 00:36:56.814
intentions is to describe them in the present tense, even though at the moment
00:36:56.814 --> 00:37:01.555
we make the request, we're referring to experiences that have already happened.
00:37:02.203 --> 00:37:06.371
There's no strong insight that's swayed our view on this one.
00:37:06.713 --> 00:37:12.663
It simply feels that speaking in terms of what is carries more surety and immediacy
00:37:13.035 --> 00:37:15.072
than speaking about what was.
00:37:15.403 --> 00:37:21.051
However, you may wish to take your own view on this and frame intentions as you feel led.
00:37:21.707 --> 00:37:25.444
Yeah, I was just thinking there, and again, we get into some theology here,
00:37:26.472 --> 00:37:32.645
The idea of logos, vibration, the original or eternal creating,
00:37:32.645 --> 00:37:36.525
you know, as we often speak about when we're sending intention,
00:37:36.525 --> 00:37:40.715
what we're yearning for is very much what's arising now, isn't it?
00:37:40.715 --> 00:37:44.818
It is kind of where we are, at least. It's within the present moment.
00:37:45.707 --> 00:37:50.501
But what we're saying here is that the vibration can reach across time.
00:37:51.585 --> 00:37:56.525
So it does seem to make sense to speak about, it's kind of more assertive,
00:37:56.525 --> 00:37:58.708
isn't it, speaking about what's happening now?
00:37:59.539 --> 00:38:02.765
Well, especially if you consider the theory that everything's happening all
00:38:02.765 --> 00:38:08.540
at once, you know, kind of in a spiral, then it's easier to keep it in the present moment.
00:38:09.352 --> 00:38:14.233
When praying for a painful event from the past, we might also want to be mindful of our perspective.
00:38:14.599 --> 00:38:19.575
For example, is our deepest hope to revise history, to entrust that moment to
00:38:19.575 --> 00:38:24.455
divine compassion, or for what happened in the past to be changed into something
00:38:24.455 --> 00:38:26.227
that can bring healing in the present?
00:38:27.400 --> 00:38:32.463
These need not contradict each other, but as with everything we do in our intention
00:38:32.463 --> 00:38:37.373
work, we believe that being very clear and specific in what we ask for makes
00:38:37.373 --> 00:38:40.280
a crucial difference in the impact it has.
00:38:41.003 --> 00:38:44.573
We much enjoyed putting this episode together, which has really got us thinking,
00:38:44.893 --> 00:38:49.033
even if we've not begun to understand or scratch the surface of some of the
00:38:49.453 --> 00:38:52.886
philosophical ideas on this topic put forward by theologians,
00:38:53.222 --> 00:38:54.540
philosophers, and others.
00:38:55.463 --> 00:38:59.173
We've doubtless not covered much that we could have, but hope that you,
00:38:59.593 --> 00:39:04.553
like us, might be inspired to consider the potential power of retrospective
00:39:04.553 --> 00:39:09.569
prayer, however you relate to what's going on in our multi-layered, mysterious,
00:39:10.127 --> 00:39:13.940
and perhaps not exclusively, time-limited universe.
00:39:14.692 --> 00:39:21.287
So, this week, as we reflect on the potential power of retrospective prayer and intention holding.
00:39:21.931 --> 00:39:24.537
We suggest holding as our main intention.
00:39:25.594 --> 00:39:30.540
When praying or holding intention for events and people retrospectively,
00:39:30.952 --> 00:39:35.525
I resolve to honor the free will of those who are the object of my intention,
00:39:36.036 --> 00:39:42.549
recognizing that I may not change history, but that my prayers can move hearts and minds.
00:39:43.282 --> 00:39:45.047
Please join us in holding this.
00:39:45.840 --> 00:39:48.983
