1
00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:04,000
Does winning a prestigious award lead to sales? And . . .
2
00:00:05,240 --> 00:00:10,520
Will writing a really atrocious book that no one reads tank your career?
3
00:00:12,800 --> 00:00:14,520
Hello listeners.
4
00:00:14,520 --> 00:00:20,000
Welcome to I'll Probably Delete This, where I learn about book publishing and podcasting
5
00:00:20,680 --> 00:00:28,640
by telling you stories from successful authors and other notable people from the history of the publishing industry,
6
00:00:29,600 --> 00:00:34,120
including one of the most financially successful authors ever.
7
00:00:34,640 --> 00:00:40,960
As you likely know, James Patterson has built himself into a publishing machine.
8
00:00:41,840 --> 00:00:49,460
He now regularly produces multiple bestsellers every year, churning out 10 or more
9
00:00:49,800 --> 00:00:54,400
new books annually. As of April of 2025,
10
00:00:55,280 --> 00:00:59,320
Patterson had put four different books on the New York Times
11
00:00:59,720 --> 00:01:06,520
Best Seller List for the year, with each one being on that list for multiple weeks. In this episode
12
00:01:06,920 --> 00:01:13,400
and the next we are going to look at his first big financial success in publishing.
13
00:01:13,760 --> 00:01:20,800
That first big publishing success was his book Along Came a Spider released by Little, Brown in
14
00:01:21,640 --> 00:01:25,720
1993 in this first episode we're going to focus on
15
00:01:26,360 --> 00:01:31,240
the change he made to his writing as a way to produce a book
16
00:01:31,240 --> 00:01:36,180
that would have much broader appeal than his prior books had. In other words,
17
00:01:36,440 --> 00:01:42,240
How did Patterson change his writing in Along Came a Spider to make it sell?
18
00:01:42,840 --> 00:01:49,560
After he wrote it, he thought that the book was a hit or at least a potential hit and
19
00:01:50,320 --> 00:01:56,760
He was pretty bold in the ways he promoted and got his publisher to promote the book.
20
00:01:57,280 --> 00:01:59,280
Because of that [in] our next episode,
21
00:02:00,120 --> 00:02:07,360
we are going to turn our attention to how he promoted the book to ensure that it was successful. In future episodes
22
00:02:07,680 --> 00:02:11,040
we'll cover more stories from other successful
23
00:02:11,560 --> 00:02:13,680
storytellers and authors.
24
00:02:13,680 --> 00:02:20,920
Join me now as we learn about one of the major inflection points in James Patterson's very successful
25
00:02:21,440 --> 00:02:28,400
Publishing career. As I said, Little, Brown published Along Came a Spider in February of
26
00:02:29,240 --> 00:02:36,160
1993. It quickly hit the New York Times Bestsellers list. Part of the success story is one of
27
00:02:36,600 --> 00:02:43,640
promotion and marketing. But before any of that mattered, James Patterson had to write a good book. And more so
28
00:02:44,000 --> 00:02:48,120
specifically a book that a lot of people wanted to read.
29
00:02:48,640 --> 00:02:56,320
This episode looks at his approach to writing and what Patterson did to try to write a book that would sell and
30
00:02:56,480 --> 00:03:00,200
people would read. To explain how his writing changed
31
00:03:01,120 --> 00:03:04,480
We have to start with his first published book.
32
00:03:04,920 --> 00:03:12,320
He wrote The Thomas Berryman Number while working for an advertising agency when he was in his 20s.
33
00:03:13,080 --> 00:03:15,080
Little, Brown published the book in
34
00:03:16,840 --> 00:03:18,840
1976 when
35
00:03:18,840 --> 00:03:26,240
Patterson was 29. As an aside. I've seen in an interview with Patterson and in his biography
36
00:03:26,240 --> 00:03:31,160
He talks about being 26 when he published his first book, which I can't totally figure out.
37
00:03:31,160 --> 00:03:35,920
I think he might have written one when he was younger. Either that or I have the date of his birth wrong.
38
00:03:36,360 --> 00:03:40,920
Anyway, if you know the answer feel free to reach out to me and correct the record.
39
00:03:41,480 --> 00:03:44,360
That book, the first one published was a complicated
40
00:03:45,040 --> 00:03:50,600
political thriller. It was it had description. It was a bit lyrical
41
00:03:51,200 --> 00:03:54,880
He sent that book around to publishers
42
00:03:55,360 --> 00:04:02,040
To dozens of publishers and got back 31 different rejections. He had done that on his own and
43
00:04:02,800 --> 00:04:08,040
eventually, he reached out to an agent and found an agent Francis Greenberger and
44
00:04:08,680 --> 00:04:12,840
That agent found a publisher for him which ended up being a Little, Brown.
45
00:04:13,560 --> 00:04:15,440
After publication
46
00:04:15,440 --> 00:04:19,440
Patterson won for the book an Edgar Award for the best debut
47
00:04:19,760 --> 00:04:25,240
Novel from the mystery writers of America little statue of Edgar Allan Poe
48
00:04:25,240 --> 00:04:30,200
Which I think he still has on his bookshelves in his home in Florida the award
49
00:04:30,200 --> 00:04:36,360
However, didn't move sales really at all in the two years after publication
50
00:04:37,160 --> 00:04:39,480
Patterson's first book sold around
51
00:04:40,440 --> 00:04:42,200
10,000 copies
52
00:04:42,200 --> 00:04:47,960
You can find interviews of Patterson where he will say from that point forward
53
00:04:48,280 --> 00:04:52,320
He decided he was going to write books that people wanted to buy
54
00:04:52,600 --> 00:04:57,960
he wanted to write books that people wanted to read and wasn't interested in
55
00:04:58,840 --> 00:04:59,880
getting
56
00:04:59,960 --> 00:05:07,560
Positive comments from literary critics if that meant that few or no one was going to read the books that he wrote
57
00:05:07,720 --> 00:05:12,760
The Thomas Berryman number the name of his first book was about a hit man
58
00:05:13,160 --> 00:05:20,100
It was told in a nonlinear way. It was a thriller, but it had literary aspirations
59
00:05:21,040 --> 00:05:25,280
Patterson read widely and also loved literary novels
60
00:05:26,000 --> 00:05:29,920
But after Berryman Patterson dropped any literary aspirations
61
00:05:30,160 --> 00:05:32,160
He said at the time
62
00:05:32,240 --> 00:05:35,840
That I was interested in sentences not stories
63
00:05:36,560 --> 00:05:38,560
And definitely not plot
64
00:05:38,960 --> 00:05:45,760
He will also say that Berryman was his best written book on a sentence level but was not on a story level
65
00:05:46,320 --> 00:05:51,440
Just to back up a little bit before Little, Brown published the Thomas Berryman number
66
00:05:51,920 --> 00:05:56,240
Patterson had read both day of the jackal and the exorcist
67
00:05:56,880 --> 00:06:00,720
He really liked those books which he described as pacey
68
00:06:01,420 --> 00:06:07,360
Suspenseful plot heavy books and that is what he set out to write from then on
69
00:06:07,920 --> 00:06:13,300
Patterson continued to work for the advertising agency in new york j walter thompson
70
00:06:13,920 --> 00:06:19,600
He wrote in the mornings before going into the office his routine was to write from
71
00:06:20,080 --> 00:06:24,880
Five or five thirty to seven or seven thirty and then head into work
72
00:06:25,360 --> 00:06:28,720
He would also write in the evenings after work if he had time
73
00:06:29,360 --> 00:06:35,520
After his first book he continued to write and got a new book published every couple of years
74
00:06:36,160 --> 00:06:42,560
Each one was a different kind of thriller and each one struggled to find sales or an audience
75
00:06:43,520 --> 00:06:49,220
In his next book, he intentionally set out to write what he thought would be a big bestseller
76
00:06:49,840 --> 00:06:56,560
That book season of the machete was a violent action thriller and as patterson describes it today
77
00:06:57,040 --> 00:06:59,040
It was terrible
78
00:06:59,100 --> 00:07:01,620
Patterson said, "It was a derivative
79
00:07:02,780 --> 00:07:05,840
incoherent hack job and that's being kind.
80
00:07:06,400 --> 00:07:10,400
Stephen King once called me a terrible writer. I don't think that's true.
81
00:07:10,880 --> 00:07:15,120
But Season of the Machete was terrible and I definitely wrote it."
82
00:07:16,080 --> 00:07:17,760
He followed Machete
83
00:07:17,760 --> 00:07:24,800
with his third book about an international plot to bring back the Fourth Reich or or to raise up a Fourth Reich.
84
00:07:25,200 --> 00:07:32,320
His fourth book was a religious themed thriller called the Virgin that had a Virgin Mary character,
85
00:07:32,800 --> 00:07:39,280
Almost anticipating Dan Brown by more than a decade but with less of a mystery or puzzle quality.
86
00:07:40,000 --> 00:07:42,720
His fifth was a kind of financial thriller.
87
00:07:43,520 --> 00:07:48,720
And each of those three books were published by a different publishing house,
88
00:07:49,600 --> 00:07:51,600
None of which were Little, Brown.
89
00:07:52,060 --> 00:07:54,800
Importantly as I said, none of these books
90
00:07:55,420 --> 00:07:56,640
sells
91
00:07:56,640 --> 00:07:58,640
He was essentially solidly
92
00:07:58,860 --> 00:08:00,860
mid-list or less.
93
00:08:01,440 --> 00:08:08,320
In addition to Year of the Jackal, which I mentioned already Patterson was informed by Silence of the Lambs,
94
00:08:08,800 --> 00:08:12,640
Which came out in 1988. And even more by
95
00:08:13,520 --> 00:08:17,680
Mrs. Bridge by Evan S. Connelly which came out in
96
00:08:18,300 --> 00:08:19,600
1959.
97
00:08:19,600 --> 00:08:26,000
Silence of the Lambs was a popular thriller. The book came out in '88 and the movie followed in
98
00:08:26,300 --> 00:08:31,280
'91. The the book sold well and the movie did very well at the box office.
99
00:08:32,400 --> 00:08:37,680
And Patterson was trying to write a popular thriller in in similar veins
100
00:08:38,080 --> 00:08:43,920
The book Mrs. Bridge was different. It told the life of an upper middle class family in
101
00:08:44,000 --> 00:08:45,120
St. Louis
102
00:08:45,120 --> 00:08:52,720
But the part that so influenced Patterson's writing was that Connelly told the story of domestic life through
103
00:08:54,220 --> 00:08:56,640
117 very short chapters.
104
00:08:57,440 --> 00:09:01,680
Patterson set out to apply that approach to thriller writing.
105
00:09:02,320 --> 00:09:04,220
And in
106
00:09:04,220 --> 00:09:09,660
1989, so this is still a couple years before we get to Along Came a Spider,
107
00:09:09,980 --> 00:09:17,500
He came out with the Midnight Club, which was about a New York detective and a murder still sort of a thriller genre
108
00:09:18,060 --> 00:09:20,620
It got much closer to what would become
109
00:09:21,260 --> 00:09:25,500
James Patterson's clear style so much so that the publisher
110
00:09:26,060 --> 00:09:31,180
Would re-release the book after the Alex Cross series starts to take off
111
00:09:31,660 --> 00:09:34,700
And in that book it features short chapters
112
00:09:35,420 --> 00:09:41,100
tight plotting a focus on story and essentially a neglect of description
113
00:09:41,740 --> 00:09:45,660
And by this point you're probably thinking to yourself. Well, we've gotten there
114
00:09:46,140 --> 00:09:52,320
James patterson's style is very short tightly written plot heavy chapters
115
00:09:52,860 --> 00:09:57,260
And lots and lots of them you pick up a James Patterson book and you're going to read
116
00:09:57,740 --> 00:10:00,460
One and a half two two and a half pages
117
00:10:01,180 --> 00:10:04,780
And you're flipping and you're on to the next chapter and that's true
118
00:10:05,340 --> 00:10:11,900
But there was still a piece that was missing what seemed to still be missing was the right main character
119
00:10:12,620 --> 00:10:19,500
That and obviously a commitment from a publisher to do a big print run and to promote the book
120
00:10:20,140 --> 00:10:22,140
In Along Came a Spider,
121
00:10:22,300 --> 00:10:29,740
Patterson found his formula like midnight club. The book was light on description but heavy on pace and plot
122
00:10:30,380 --> 00:10:35,260
It had the two three and four page chapters, although in Along Came a Spider
123
00:10:35,260 --> 00:10:40,700
Some of them are are certainly longer. You might be able to find a five or six page chapter occasionally
124
00:10:41,180 --> 00:10:45,580
And I think it's notable that two and three page chapters in a way
125
00:10:46,140 --> 00:10:51,600
Ask for less commitment from the reader and make a book much more approachable
126
00:10:52,080 --> 00:10:55,440
Short chapters also mean lots of white space
127
00:10:56,080 --> 00:11:04,160
Which literally forces the reader to turn the page more often. It is designed to be a page turner
128
00:11:04,800 --> 00:11:09,280
Again, Patterson wasn't interested in sentences. He was interested in the story.
129
00:11:09,760 --> 00:11:13,700
He wanted to write in approachable colloquial language
130
00:11:14,320 --> 00:11:19,200
Sort of the same type of language you might use if you were telling a story to a friend
131
00:11:19,600 --> 00:11:23,840
And didn't care how well constructed any particular sentence was
132
00:11:24,560 --> 00:11:26,560
Back though to that missing piece
133
00:11:26,940 --> 00:11:32,000
Importantly the book also introduced DC detective Alex Cross
134
00:11:32,640 --> 00:11:39,360
He was a psychologist and a widowed father of young kids after his wife had been murdered
135
00:11:39,920 --> 00:11:47,040
As the protagonist he was a compelling and sympathetic character who tried to do the right thing
136
00:11:47,680 --> 00:11:52,800
Patterson might not have known this at the time, but I I suspect he did or at least had an idea
137
00:11:53,200 --> 00:11:57,760
But 70 percent of his readership for this book would be women
138
00:11:58,320 --> 00:12:03,040
And Alex Cross who lived with his grandmother had two young kids,
139
00:12:03,760 --> 00:12:10,000
Was not currently in a romantic relationship, but would cycle through some over the course of the books,
140
00:12:10,560 --> 00:12:16,480
Appealed to those readers or many of them. Cross was a character that readers could root for.
141
00:12:17,040 --> 00:12:20,880
He was someone that they were happy to come back to
142
00:12:21,440 --> 00:12:28,020
And to read and really took interest in him and in his family and in those relationships
143
00:12:28,800 --> 00:12:30,800
To end this part of our story
144
00:12:31,440 --> 00:12:36,160
We're going to close with the book contract for Along Came a Spider
145
00:12:37,120 --> 00:12:42,880
In Patterson's autobiography, he tells part of the story of that contract
146
00:12:43,360 --> 00:12:45,760
Patterson's agent at the time by now
147
00:12:45,760 --> 00:12:52,080
It was Richard Pine pitched the story to Little, Brown. Larry Kershbaum and Charlie Haywood
148
00:12:52,480 --> 00:12:59,680
Read the manuscript while on a flight from New York to London. Kershbaum was head of Time Warner Book Group,
149
00:13:00,160 --> 00:13:06,320
which owned Little Brown. Hayward led Little, Brown. As Kershbaum finished parts of the manuscript,
150
00:13:06,560 --> 00:13:11,520
he passed them to Hayward sitting in the next seat. Before the flight had landed
151
00:13:11,920 --> 00:13:18,400
they had finished the book and both agreed they should acquire it. When they landed they called Freddy Freedman
152
00:13:18,960 --> 00:13:24,720
She was Patterson's editor at Little, Brown at the time. She had edited the previous book of his.
153
00:13:25,600 --> 00:13:33,360
And they settled on a million dollar offer for a two-book deal. So seven figures two books.
154
00:13:33,920 --> 00:13:36,800
And this was a clear signal to Patterson
155
00:13:37,360 --> 00:13:38,560
that he was right.
156
00:13:38,560 --> 00:13:46,160
He had written something that he could sell and it was a clear signal that the publishing house was going to be behind the book.
157
00:13:49,280 --> 00:13:54,960
For our post script to this part of the story, I have one big correction I need to make.
158
00:13:55,520 --> 00:14:02,560
I started this episode by saying that we were going to focus on Patterson's first big publishing success.
159
00:14:03,040 --> 00:14:08,720
Along Came a Spider and that book certainly was a sales and financial success
160
00:14:09,520 --> 00:14:11,680
But it wasn't Patterson's first
161
00:14:12,320 --> 00:14:14,320
So let me cover that one now
162
00:14:14,640 --> 00:14:17,040
a year before Along Came a Spider
163
00:14:17,740 --> 00:14:23,040
Patterson co-wrote a book that also made the new york times bestsellers list
164
00:14:23,840 --> 00:14:25,840
It was Patterson's seventh book.
165
00:14:26,320 --> 00:14:28,320
And it often gets overlooked
166
00:14:28,400 --> 00:14:33,520
because it was non-fiction. But the book hit the New York Times Best Sellers list.
167
00:14:33,760 --> 00:14:38,160
It went through at least three different printings and it sold more than
168
00:14:39,340 --> 00:14:46,720
250,000 in hardcover and likely as many in paperback. The book was The Day America Told the Truth.
169
00:14:47,500 --> 00:14:53,440
Patterson from the time that he started writing or from the time he wrote his first book
170
00:14:53,600 --> 00:14:58,740
The Thomas Baryman Number that we've talked about he was working in advertising
171
00:14:59,280 --> 00:15:01,680
He was working for the J. Walter Thompson
172
00:15:02,220 --> 00:15:07,520
advertising agency and that continued through his next six books,
173
00:15:07,920 --> 00:15:12,160
Through personal tragedy of losing his girlfriend to a brain tumor,
174
00:15:12,560 --> 00:15:20,400
And continued up through the writing of Along Came a Spider. And he continued at the advertising agency for a couple more years
175
00:15:20,560 --> 00:15:21,920
even after that.
176
00:15:21,920 --> 00:15:23,520
But notably,
177
00:15:23,520 --> 00:15:28,480
In that time, he had risen from junior copy editor up to CEO
178
00:15:28,720 --> 00:15:32,340
So he advanced very quickly and was very successful.
179
00:15:32,720 --> 00:15:38,560
One of the things he will mention in his autobiography is that he was responsible for the Toys 'R' Us jingle,
180
00:15:38,880 --> 00:15:45,920
that anybody who was a kid in the late 80s or 90s surely heard and can probably sing and
181
00:15:46,320 --> 00:15:48,320
Many of you are probably singing it now.
182
00:15:48,880 --> 00:15:53,840
So he rose very quickly through the ranks became CEO of kind of the
183
00:15:54,480 --> 00:15:58,500
New York and and US office for J. Walter Thompson.
184
00:15:58,960 --> 00:16:01,440
And the reason why I went through all that is one to give you
185
00:16:02,240 --> 00:16:07,920
More of a sense of how much of an outlier Patterson is, but also to explain this book.
186
00:16:08,560 --> 00:16:11,120
The book The Day America Told the Truth
187
00:16:11,660 --> 00:16:15,520
Patterson wrote it in his role as CEO.
188
00:16:16,080 --> 00:16:23,120
The advertising firm had conducted an extensive and expensive survey, kind of a market survey,
189
00:16:23,520 --> 00:16:26,320
Of more than 2,000 americans covering
190
00:16:26,880 --> 00:16:28,880
300 or so questions.
191
00:16:29,200 --> 00:16:31,200
The designer of the survey,
192
00:16:31,520 --> 00:16:38,160
a colleague at the firm, was Peter Kim. And Kim proposed and implemented the research
193
00:16:38,540 --> 00:16:43,040
project and then persuaded Patterson that this should be turned into a book.
194
00:16:43,600 --> 00:16:48,640
Patterson organized the information and he wrote the book. Kim was his co-author.
195
00:16:49,200 --> 00:16:55,280
Patterson organized each section around an arresting stat that came out of the survey
196
00:16:55,840 --> 00:17:03,920
Like 91 percent of US lie, or seven percent of Americans would kill for 10 million dollars.
197
00:17:04,880 --> 00:17:10,640
After the book is written J. Walter Thompson then organized a marketing campaign for the book,
198
00:17:11,200 --> 00:17:14,320
designed it to get attention and press coverage.
199
00:17:14,800 --> 00:17:19,600
They sent out press releases with surprising stats from the survey and the book
200
00:17:20,560 --> 00:17:26,800
They sent press releases that were regionally targeted trying to sort of segment the market and give
201
00:17:27,420 --> 00:17:30,080
Information that particular people would be interested in.
202
00:17:30,720 --> 00:17:36,240
They also did a national campaign where they persuaded morning shows to have them on
203
00:17:36,800 --> 00:17:41,360
They divided the work so Patterson took the morning shows like Good Morning America,
204
00:17:41,920 --> 00:17:47,920
And Kim took the more policy focused newsier shows with programs like Nightline
205
00:17:48,320 --> 00:17:51,280
They also managed to get an hour on
206
00:17:51,920 --> 00:17:54,320
Oprah and so they were on the Oprah show.
207
00:17:54,960 --> 00:17:56,960
This is in 1991.
208
00:17:57,680 --> 00:18:00,480
And the book was, as I said, the book was a success.
209
00:18:01,040 --> 00:18:08,320
It sold well and it sold probably more than they expected and their promotional campaign and advertising campaign
210
00:18:08,880 --> 00:18:12,000
Was a big reason for that success.
211
00:18:12,640 --> 00:18:16,720
And the reason in part to tell that story is, one to correct the record.
212
00:18:16,800 --> 00:18:22,800
But two it is a nice bridge to what we're going to cover in the next episode. In the year before
213
00:18:23,120 --> 00:18:25,920
Little, Brown published Along Came a Spider
214
00:18:26,400 --> 00:18:32,640
Patterson, his co-author Peter Kim, and the J. Walter Thompson advertising agency
215
00:18:33,360 --> 00:18:37,520
managed and marketed and promoted a book launch.
216
00:18:38,000 --> 00:18:46,160
They were creative. They worked on segmenting the audience. And they generated buzz and then translated that buzz
217
00:18:46,560 --> 00:18:48,320
into book sales.
218
00:18:48,320 --> 00:18:51,600
In a way it acted as a dry run for what
219
00:18:52,000 --> 00:18:56,400
Patterson would do with Along Came a Spider the next year.
220
00:18:58,880 --> 00:19:04,660
For our bibliography for this episode it's James Patterson's autobiography
221
00:19:05,840 --> 00:19:14,000
Which has the, as Patterson will recognize and has recognized, the pretentious title James Patterson by James Patterson
222
00:19:14,480 --> 00:19:16,800
published by Little, Brown in
223
00:19:18,140 --> 00:19:19,280
2022
224
00:19:19,280 --> 00:19:24,480
It is entertaining. It's written in Patterson's typical style.
225
00:19:25,120 --> 00:19:27,100
But instead of
226
00:19:27,100 --> 00:19:28,480
suspenseful
227
00:19:28,480 --> 00:19:33,520
Very pacey plot driven, It's more a package of vignettes.
228
00:19:34,320 --> 00:19:41,120
So not a thriller in the same way but very similar in terms of writing style and structure. Lots of short chapters.
229
00:19:41,280 --> 00:19:43,360
It's very easy to pick up and put down
230
00:19:43,840 --> 00:19:44,720
And
231
00:19:44,720 --> 00:19:49,600
No one should doubt that Patterson is a good storyteller. He can tell a good story
232
00:19:50,080 --> 00:19:57,520
And can write compelling prose even if they aren't the most stylized, or full of description.
233
00:19:58,240 --> 00:20:03,040
And I will say that I quite enjoyed it. One thing that was a challenge is
234
00:20:03,680 --> 00:20:09,280
If you pick it up because you want to do some sort of report on Patterson or study of him,
235
00:20:09,600 --> 00:20:12,240
Using this book as a reference will be hard
236
00:20:12,560 --> 00:20:18,480
There isn't an index and it's not really written for that purpose to tell the strict details of his life.
237
00:20:19,040 --> 00:20:21,040
But very entertaining.
238
00:20:21,120 --> 00:20:25,760
And easy to pick up read for a little bit put down and pick up again later.
239
00:20:26,000 --> 00:20:29,200
So, if you're at all interested, I encourage you to try it out.
240
00:20:29,920 --> 00:20:35,120
Join me next time for another episode of I'll Probably Delete This,
241
00:20:35,680 --> 00:20:40,420
Where we'll explore more stories from authors, storytellers,
242
00:20:41,040 --> 00:20:43,040
great books, and publishing
243
00:20:43,280 --> 00:20:50,800
Including our next episode where we will learn about the marketing behind the success of Along Came a Spider.
244
00:20:51,360 --> 00:20:53,360
Thanks everybody.
00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:04,000
Does winning a prestigious award lead to sales? And . . .
2
00:00:05,240 --> 00:00:10,520
Will writing a really atrocious book that no one reads tank your career?
3
00:00:12,800 --> 00:00:14,520
Hello listeners.
4
00:00:14,520 --> 00:00:20,000
Welcome to I'll Probably Delete This, where I learn about book publishing and podcasting
5
00:00:20,680 --> 00:00:28,640
by telling you stories from successful authors and other notable people from the history of the publishing industry,
6
00:00:29,600 --> 00:00:34,120
including one of the most financially successful authors ever.
7
00:00:34,640 --> 00:00:40,960
As you likely know, James Patterson has built himself into a publishing machine.
8
00:00:41,840 --> 00:00:49,460
He now regularly produces multiple bestsellers every year, churning out 10 or more
9
00:00:49,800 --> 00:00:54,400
new books annually. As of April of 2025,
10
00:00:55,280 --> 00:00:59,320
Patterson had put four different books on the New York Times
11
00:00:59,720 --> 00:01:06,520
Best Seller List for the year, with each one being on that list for multiple weeks. In this episode
12
00:01:06,920 --> 00:01:13,400
and the next we are going to look at his first big financial success in publishing.
13
00:01:13,760 --> 00:01:20,800
That first big publishing success was his book Along Came a Spider released by Little, Brown in
14
00:01:21,640 --> 00:01:25,720
1993 in this first episode we're going to focus on
15
00:01:26,360 --> 00:01:31,240
the change he made to his writing as a way to produce a book
16
00:01:31,240 --> 00:01:36,180
that would have much broader appeal than his prior books had. In other words,
17
00:01:36,440 --> 00:01:42,240
How did Patterson change his writing in Along Came a Spider to make it sell?
18
00:01:42,840 --> 00:01:49,560
After he wrote it, he thought that the book was a hit or at least a potential hit and
19
00:01:50,320 --> 00:01:56,760
He was pretty bold in the ways he promoted and got his publisher to promote the book.
20
00:01:57,280 --> 00:01:59,280
Because of that [in] our next episode,
21
00:02:00,120 --> 00:02:07,360
we are going to turn our attention to how he promoted the book to ensure that it was successful. In future episodes
22
00:02:07,680 --> 00:02:11,040
we'll cover more stories from other successful
23
00:02:11,560 --> 00:02:13,680
storytellers and authors.
24
00:02:13,680 --> 00:02:20,920
Join me now as we learn about one of the major inflection points in James Patterson's very successful
25
00:02:21,440 --> 00:02:28,400
Publishing career. As I said, Little, Brown published Along Came a Spider in February of
26
00:02:29,240 --> 00:02:36,160
1993. It quickly hit the New York Times Bestsellers list. Part of the success story is one of
27
00:02:36,600 --> 00:02:43,640
promotion and marketing. But before any of that mattered, James Patterson had to write a good book. And more so
28
00:02:44,000 --> 00:02:48,120
specifically a book that a lot of people wanted to read.
29
00:02:48,640 --> 00:02:56,320
This episode looks at his approach to writing and what Patterson did to try to write a book that would sell and
30
00:02:56,480 --> 00:03:00,200
people would read. To explain how his writing changed
31
00:03:01,120 --> 00:03:04,480
We have to start with his first published book.
32
00:03:04,920 --> 00:03:12,320
He wrote The Thomas Berryman Number while working for an advertising agency when he was in his 20s.
33
00:03:13,080 --> 00:03:15,080
Little, Brown published the book in
34
00:03:16,840 --> 00:03:18,840
1976 when
35
00:03:18,840 --> 00:03:26,240
Patterson was 29. As an aside. I've seen in an interview with Patterson and in his biography
36
00:03:26,240 --> 00:03:31,160
He talks about being 26 when he published his first book, which I can't totally figure out.
37
00:03:31,160 --> 00:03:35,920
I think he might have written one when he was younger. Either that or I have the date of his birth wrong.
38
00:03:36,360 --> 00:03:40,920
Anyway, if you know the answer feel free to reach out to me and correct the record.
39
00:03:41,480 --> 00:03:44,360
That book, the first one published was a complicated
40
00:03:45,040 --> 00:03:50,600
political thriller. It was it had description. It was a bit lyrical
41
00:03:51,200 --> 00:03:54,880
He sent that book around to publishers
42
00:03:55,360 --> 00:04:02,040
To dozens of publishers and got back 31 different rejections. He had done that on his own and
43
00:04:02,800 --> 00:04:08,040
eventually, he reached out to an agent and found an agent Francis Greenberger and
44
00:04:08,680 --> 00:04:12,840
That agent found a publisher for him which ended up being a Little, Brown.
45
00:04:13,560 --> 00:04:15,440
After publication
46
00:04:15,440 --> 00:04:19,440
Patterson won for the book an Edgar Award for the best debut
47
00:04:19,760 --> 00:04:25,240
Novel from the mystery writers of America little statue of Edgar Allan Poe
48
00:04:25,240 --> 00:04:30,200
Which I think he still has on his bookshelves in his home in Florida the award
49
00:04:30,200 --> 00:04:36,360
However, didn't move sales really at all in the two years after publication
50
00:04:37,160 --> 00:04:39,480
Patterson's first book sold around
51
00:04:40,440 --> 00:04:42,200
10,000 copies
52
00:04:42,200 --> 00:04:47,960
You can find interviews of Patterson where he will say from that point forward
53
00:04:48,280 --> 00:04:52,320
He decided he was going to write books that people wanted to buy
54
00:04:52,600 --> 00:04:57,960
he wanted to write books that people wanted to read and wasn't interested in
55
00:04:58,840 --> 00:04:59,880
getting
56
00:04:59,960 --> 00:05:07,560
Positive comments from literary critics if that meant that few or no one was going to read the books that he wrote
57
00:05:07,720 --> 00:05:12,760
The Thomas Berryman number the name of his first book was about a hit man
58
00:05:13,160 --> 00:05:20,100
It was told in a nonlinear way. It was a thriller, but it had literary aspirations
59
00:05:21,040 --> 00:05:25,280
Patterson read widely and also loved literary novels
60
00:05:26,000 --> 00:05:29,920
But after Berryman Patterson dropped any literary aspirations
61
00:05:30,160 --> 00:05:32,160
He said at the time
62
00:05:32,240 --> 00:05:35,840
That I was interested in sentences not stories
63
00:05:36,560 --> 00:05:38,560
And definitely not plot
64
00:05:38,960 --> 00:05:45,760
He will also say that Berryman was his best written book on a sentence level but was not on a story level
65
00:05:46,320 --> 00:05:51,440
Just to back up a little bit before Little, Brown published the Thomas Berryman number
66
00:05:51,920 --> 00:05:56,240
Patterson had read both day of the jackal and the exorcist
67
00:05:56,880 --> 00:06:00,720
He really liked those books which he described as pacey
68
00:06:01,420 --> 00:06:07,360
Suspenseful plot heavy books and that is what he set out to write from then on
69
00:06:07,920 --> 00:06:13,300
Patterson continued to work for the advertising agency in new york j walter thompson
70
00:06:13,920 --> 00:06:19,600
He wrote in the mornings before going into the office his routine was to write from
71
00:06:20,080 --> 00:06:24,880
Five or five thirty to seven or seven thirty and then head into work
72
00:06:25,360 --> 00:06:28,720
He would also write in the evenings after work if he had time
73
00:06:29,360 --> 00:06:35,520
After his first book he continued to write and got a new book published every couple of years
74
00:06:36,160 --> 00:06:42,560
Each one was a different kind of thriller and each one struggled to find sales or an audience
75
00:06:43,520 --> 00:06:49,220
In his next book, he intentionally set out to write what he thought would be a big bestseller
76
00:06:49,840 --> 00:06:56,560
That book season of the machete was a violent action thriller and as patterson describes it today
77
00:06:57,040 --> 00:06:59,040
It was terrible
78
00:06:59,100 --> 00:07:01,620
Patterson said, "It was a derivative
79
00:07:02,780 --> 00:07:05,840
incoherent hack job and that's being kind.
80
00:07:06,400 --> 00:07:10,400
Stephen King once called me a terrible writer. I don't think that's true.
81
00:07:10,880 --> 00:07:15,120
But Season of the Machete was terrible and I definitely wrote it."
82
00:07:16,080 --> 00:07:17,760
He followed Machete
83
00:07:17,760 --> 00:07:24,800
with his third book about an international plot to bring back the Fourth Reich or or to raise up a Fourth Reich.
84
00:07:25,200 --> 00:07:32,320
His fourth book was a religious themed thriller called the Virgin that had a Virgin Mary character,
85
00:07:32,800 --> 00:07:39,280
Almost anticipating Dan Brown by more than a decade but with less of a mystery or puzzle quality.
86
00:07:40,000 --> 00:07:42,720
His fifth was a kind of financial thriller.
87
00:07:43,520 --> 00:07:48,720
And each of those three books were published by a different publishing house,
88
00:07:49,600 --> 00:07:51,600
None of which were Little, Brown.
89
00:07:52,060 --> 00:07:54,800
Importantly as I said, none of these books
90
00:07:55,420 --> 00:07:56,640
sells
91
00:07:56,640 --> 00:07:58,640
He was essentially solidly
92
00:07:58,860 --> 00:08:00,860
mid-list or less.
93
00:08:01,440 --> 00:08:08,320
In addition to Year of the Jackal, which I mentioned already Patterson was informed by Silence of the Lambs,
94
00:08:08,800 --> 00:08:12,640
Which came out in 1988. And even more by
95
00:08:13,520 --> 00:08:17,680
Mrs. Bridge by Evan S. Connelly which came out in
96
00:08:18,300 --> 00:08:19,600
1959.
97
00:08:19,600 --> 00:08:26,000
Silence of the Lambs was a popular thriller. The book came out in '88 and the movie followed in
98
00:08:26,300 --> 00:08:31,280
'91. The the book sold well and the movie did very well at the box office.
99
00:08:32,400 --> 00:08:37,680
And Patterson was trying to write a popular thriller in in similar veins
100
00:08:38,080 --> 00:08:43,920
The book Mrs. Bridge was different. It told the life of an upper middle class family in
101
00:08:44,000 --> 00:08:45,120
St. Louis
102
00:08:45,120 --> 00:08:52,720
But the part that so influenced Patterson's writing was that Connelly told the story of domestic life through
103
00:08:54,220 --> 00:08:56,640
117 very short chapters.
104
00:08:57,440 --> 00:09:01,680
Patterson set out to apply that approach to thriller writing.
105
00:09:02,320 --> 00:09:04,220
And in
106
00:09:04,220 --> 00:09:09,660
1989, so this is still a couple years before we get to Along Came a Spider,
107
00:09:09,980 --> 00:09:17,500
He came out with the Midnight Club, which was about a New York detective and a murder still sort of a thriller genre
108
00:09:18,060 --> 00:09:20,620
It got much closer to what would become
109
00:09:21,260 --> 00:09:25,500
James Patterson's clear style so much so that the publisher
110
00:09:26,060 --> 00:09:31,180
Would re-release the book after the Alex Cross series starts to take off
111
00:09:31,660 --> 00:09:34,700
And in that book it features short chapters
112
00:09:35,420 --> 00:09:41,100
tight plotting a focus on story and essentially a neglect of description
113
00:09:41,740 --> 00:09:45,660
And by this point you're probably thinking to yourself. Well, we've gotten there
114
00:09:46,140 --> 00:09:52,320
James patterson's style is very short tightly written plot heavy chapters
115
00:09:52,860 --> 00:09:57,260
And lots and lots of them you pick up a James Patterson book and you're going to read
116
00:09:57,740 --> 00:10:00,460
One and a half two two and a half pages
117
00:10:01,180 --> 00:10:04,780
And you're flipping and you're on to the next chapter and that's true
118
00:10:05,340 --> 00:10:11,900
But there was still a piece that was missing what seemed to still be missing was the right main character
119
00:10:12,620 --> 00:10:19,500
That and obviously a commitment from a publisher to do a big print run and to promote the book
120
00:10:20,140 --> 00:10:22,140
In Along Came a Spider,
121
00:10:22,300 --> 00:10:29,740
Patterson found his formula like midnight club. The book was light on description but heavy on pace and plot
122
00:10:30,380 --> 00:10:35,260
It had the two three and four page chapters, although in Along Came a Spider
123
00:10:35,260 --> 00:10:40,700
Some of them are are certainly longer. You might be able to find a five or six page chapter occasionally
124
00:10:41,180 --> 00:10:45,580
And I think it's notable that two and three page chapters in a way
125
00:10:46,140 --> 00:10:51,600
Ask for less commitment from the reader and make a book much more approachable
126
00:10:52,080 --> 00:10:55,440
Short chapters also mean lots of white space
127
00:10:56,080 --> 00:11:04,160
Which literally forces the reader to turn the page more often. It is designed to be a page turner
128
00:11:04,800 --> 00:11:09,280
Again, Patterson wasn't interested in sentences. He was interested in the story.
129
00:11:09,760 --> 00:11:13,700
He wanted to write in approachable colloquial language
130
00:11:14,320 --> 00:11:19,200
Sort of the same type of language you might use if you were telling a story to a friend
131
00:11:19,600 --> 00:11:23,840
And didn't care how well constructed any particular sentence was
132
00:11:24,560 --> 00:11:26,560
Back though to that missing piece
133
00:11:26,940 --> 00:11:32,000
Importantly the book also introduced DC detective Alex Cross
134
00:11:32,640 --> 00:11:39,360
He was a psychologist and a widowed father of young kids after his wife had been murdered
135
00:11:39,920 --> 00:11:47,040
As the protagonist he was a compelling and sympathetic character who tried to do the right thing
136
00:11:47,680 --> 00:11:52,800
Patterson might not have known this at the time, but I I suspect he did or at least had an idea
137
00:11:53,200 --> 00:11:57,760
But 70 percent of his readership for this book would be women
138
00:11:58,320 --> 00:12:03,040
And Alex Cross who lived with his grandmother had two young kids,
139
00:12:03,760 --> 00:12:10,000
Was not currently in a romantic relationship, but would cycle through some over the course of the books,
140
00:12:10,560 --> 00:12:16,480
Appealed to those readers or many of them. Cross was a character that readers could root for.
141
00:12:17,040 --> 00:12:20,880
He was someone that they were happy to come back to
142
00:12:21,440 --> 00:12:28,020
And to read and really took interest in him and in his family and in those relationships
143
00:12:28,800 --> 00:12:30,800
To end this part of our story
144
00:12:31,440 --> 00:12:36,160
We're going to close with the book contract for Along Came a Spider
145
00:12:37,120 --> 00:12:42,880
In Patterson's autobiography, he tells part of the story of that contract
146
00:12:43,360 --> 00:12:45,760
Patterson's agent at the time by now
147
00:12:45,760 --> 00:12:52,080
It was Richard Pine pitched the story to Little, Brown. Larry Kershbaum and Charlie Haywood
148
00:12:52,480 --> 00:12:59,680
Read the manuscript while on a flight from New York to London. Kershbaum was head of Time Warner Book Group,
149
00:13:00,160 --> 00:13:06,320
which owned Little Brown. Hayward led Little, Brown. As Kershbaum finished parts of the manuscript,
150
00:13:06,560 --> 00:13:11,520
he passed them to Hayward sitting in the next seat. Before the flight had landed
151
00:13:11,920 --> 00:13:18,400
they had finished the book and both agreed they should acquire it. When they landed they called Freddy Freedman
152
00:13:18,960 --> 00:13:24,720
She was Patterson's editor at Little, Brown at the time. She had edited the previous book of his.
153
00:13:25,600 --> 00:13:33,360
And they settled on a million dollar offer for a two-book deal. So seven figures two books.
154
00:13:33,920 --> 00:13:36,800
And this was a clear signal to Patterson
155
00:13:37,360 --> 00:13:38,560
that he was right.
156
00:13:38,560 --> 00:13:46,160
He had written something that he could sell and it was a clear signal that the publishing house was going to be behind the book.
157
00:13:49,280 --> 00:13:54,960
For our post script to this part of the story, I have one big correction I need to make.
158
00:13:55,520 --> 00:14:02,560
I started this episode by saying that we were going to focus on Patterson's first big publishing success.
159
00:14:03,040 --> 00:14:08,720
Along Came a Spider and that book certainly was a sales and financial success
160
00:14:09,520 --> 00:14:11,680
But it wasn't Patterson's first
161
00:14:12,320 --> 00:14:14,320
So let me cover that one now
162
00:14:14,640 --> 00:14:17,040
a year before Along Came a Spider
163
00:14:17,740 --> 00:14:23,040
Patterson co-wrote a book that also made the new york times bestsellers list
164
00:14:23,840 --> 00:14:25,840
It was Patterson's seventh book.
165
00:14:26,320 --> 00:14:28,320
And it often gets overlooked
166
00:14:28,400 --> 00:14:33,520
because it was non-fiction. But the book hit the New York Times Best Sellers list.
167
00:14:33,760 --> 00:14:38,160
It went through at least three different printings and it sold more than
168
00:14:39,340 --> 00:14:46,720
250,000 in hardcover and likely as many in paperback. The book was The Day America Told the Truth.
169
00:14:47,500 --> 00:14:53,440
Patterson from the time that he started writing or from the time he wrote his first book
170
00:14:53,600 --> 00:14:58,740
The Thomas Baryman Number that we've talked about he was working in advertising
171
00:14:59,280 --> 00:15:01,680
He was working for the J. Walter Thompson
172
00:15:02,220 --> 00:15:07,520
advertising agency and that continued through his next six books,
173
00:15:07,920 --> 00:15:12,160
Through personal tragedy of losing his girlfriend to a brain tumor,
174
00:15:12,560 --> 00:15:20,400
And continued up through the writing of Along Came a Spider. And he continued at the advertising agency for a couple more years
175
00:15:20,560 --> 00:15:21,920
even after that.
176
00:15:21,920 --> 00:15:23,520
But notably,
177
00:15:23,520 --> 00:15:28,480
In that time, he had risen from junior copy editor up to CEO
178
00:15:28,720 --> 00:15:32,340
So he advanced very quickly and was very successful.
179
00:15:32,720 --> 00:15:38,560
One of the things he will mention in his autobiography is that he was responsible for the Toys 'R' Us jingle,
180
00:15:38,880 --> 00:15:45,920
that anybody who was a kid in the late 80s or 90s surely heard and can probably sing and
181
00:15:46,320 --> 00:15:48,320
Many of you are probably singing it now.
182
00:15:48,880 --> 00:15:53,840
So he rose very quickly through the ranks became CEO of kind of the
183
00:15:54,480 --> 00:15:58,500
New York and and US office for J. Walter Thompson.
184
00:15:58,960 --> 00:16:01,440
And the reason why I went through all that is one to give you
185
00:16:02,240 --> 00:16:07,920
More of a sense of how much of an outlier Patterson is, but also to explain this book.
186
00:16:08,560 --> 00:16:11,120
The book The Day America Told the Truth
187
00:16:11,660 --> 00:16:15,520
Patterson wrote it in his role as CEO.
188
00:16:16,080 --> 00:16:23,120
The advertising firm had conducted an extensive and expensive survey, kind of a market survey,
189
00:16:23,520 --> 00:16:26,320
Of more than 2,000 americans covering
190
00:16:26,880 --> 00:16:28,880
300 or so questions.
191
00:16:29,200 --> 00:16:31,200
The designer of the survey,
192
00:16:31,520 --> 00:16:38,160
a colleague at the firm, was Peter Kim. And Kim proposed and implemented the research
193
00:16:38,540 --> 00:16:43,040
project and then persuaded Patterson that this should be turned into a book.
194
00:16:43,600 --> 00:16:48,640
Patterson organized the information and he wrote the book. Kim was his co-author.
195
00:16:49,200 --> 00:16:55,280
Patterson organized each section around an arresting stat that came out of the survey
196
00:16:55,840 --> 00:17:03,920
Like 91 percent of US lie, or seven percent of Americans would kill for 10 million dollars.
197
00:17:04,880 --> 00:17:10,640
After the book is written J. Walter Thompson then organized a marketing campaign for the book,
198
00:17:11,200 --> 00:17:14,320
designed it to get attention and press coverage.
199
00:17:14,800 --> 00:17:19,600
They sent out press releases with surprising stats from the survey and the book
200
00:17:20,560 --> 00:17:26,800
They sent press releases that were regionally targeted trying to sort of segment the market and give
201
00:17:27,420 --> 00:17:30,080
Information that particular people would be interested in.
202
00:17:30,720 --> 00:17:36,240
They also did a national campaign where they persuaded morning shows to have them on
203
00:17:36,800 --> 00:17:41,360
They divided the work so Patterson took the morning shows like Good Morning America,
204
00:17:41,920 --> 00:17:47,920
And Kim took the more policy focused newsier shows with programs like Nightline
205
00:17:48,320 --> 00:17:51,280
They also managed to get an hour on
206
00:17:51,920 --> 00:17:54,320
Oprah and so they were on the Oprah show.
207
00:17:54,960 --> 00:17:56,960
This is in 1991.
208
00:17:57,680 --> 00:18:00,480
And the book was, as I said, the book was a success.
209
00:18:01,040 --> 00:18:08,320
It sold well and it sold probably more than they expected and their promotional campaign and advertising campaign
210
00:18:08,880 --> 00:18:12,000
Was a big reason for that success.
211
00:18:12,640 --> 00:18:16,720
And the reason in part to tell that story is, one to correct the record.
212
00:18:16,800 --> 00:18:22,800
But two it is a nice bridge to what we're going to cover in the next episode. In the year before
213
00:18:23,120 --> 00:18:25,920
Little, Brown published Along Came a Spider
214
00:18:26,400 --> 00:18:32,640
Patterson, his co-author Peter Kim, and the J. Walter Thompson advertising agency
215
00:18:33,360 --> 00:18:37,520
managed and marketed and promoted a book launch.
216
00:18:38,000 --> 00:18:46,160
They were creative. They worked on segmenting the audience. And they generated buzz and then translated that buzz
217
00:18:46,560 --> 00:18:48,320
into book sales.
218
00:18:48,320 --> 00:18:51,600
In a way it acted as a dry run for what
219
00:18:52,000 --> 00:18:56,400
Patterson would do with Along Came a Spider the next year.
220
00:18:58,880 --> 00:19:04,660
For our bibliography for this episode it's James Patterson's autobiography
221
00:19:05,840 --> 00:19:14,000
Which has the, as Patterson will recognize and has recognized, the pretentious title James Patterson by James Patterson
222
00:19:14,480 --> 00:19:16,800
published by Little, Brown in
223
00:19:18,140 --> 00:19:19,280
2022
224
00:19:19,280 --> 00:19:24,480
It is entertaining. It's written in Patterson's typical style.
225
00:19:25,120 --> 00:19:27,100
But instead of
226
00:19:27,100 --> 00:19:28,480
suspenseful
227
00:19:28,480 --> 00:19:33,520
Very pacey plot driven, It's more a package of vignettes.
228
00:19:34,320 --> 00:19:41,120
So not a thriller in the same way but very similar in terms of writing style and structure. Lots of short chapters.
229
00:19:41,280 --> 00:19:43,360
It's very easy to pick up and put down
230
00:19:43,840 --> 00:19:44,720
And
231
00:19:44,720 --> 00:19:49,600
No one should doubt that Patterson is a good storyteller. He can tell a good story
232
00:19:50,080 --> 00:19:57,520
And can write compelling prose even if they aren't the most stylized, or full of description.
233
00:19:58,240 --> 00:20:03,040
And I will say that I quite enjoyed it. One thing that was a challenge is
234
00:20:03,680 --> 00:20:09,280
If you pick it up because you want to do some sort of report on Patterson or study of him,
235
00:20:09,600 --> 00:20:12,240
Using this book as a reference will be hard
236
00:20:12,560 --> 00:20:18,480
There isn't an index and it's not really written for that purpose to tell the strict details of his life.
237
00:20:19,040 --> 00:20:21,040
But very entertaining.
238
00:20:21,120 --> 00:20:25,760
And easy to pick up read for a little bit put down and pick up again later.
239
00:20:26,000 --> 00:20:29,200
So, if you're at all interested, I encourage you to try it out.
240
