At the Matthew Farwell trial, the medical examiner described a problem that starts before the autopsy: investigators supplied a suicide narrative and her office never visited Sandra Birchmore’s apartment. Dr. María del Mar Capó-Martínez said police paperwork reported no foul play, setting the context in which she initially determined Sandra died by suicide.
The finding did not stay that way. In April 2026, after additional investigative information emerged, the Massachusetts medical examiner’s office changed the manner of death to undetermined and the cause to asphyxia. Prosecutors believe the early investigation overlooked critical evidence. Farwell’s lawyers challenge that conclusion and maintain suicide is the explanation.
William Farwell’s testimony raised a different set of questions about the police department’s relationships with Sandra. William, Matthew’s twin brother, acknowledged being intimate with Sandra while on duty and testified with federal immunity. He said their relationship began in 2018, when Sandra was an adult. Jurors also heard about Sandra’s account that she was 15 when Matthew first became involved with her, and William described Matthew telling him he had wiped phone information.
Matthew Farwell has pleaded not guilty to federal murder-related charges involving Sandra and her unborn child. Nothing William admitted on the stand decides the charges against Matthew.
