00:00:00.110 --> 00:00:01.250
What your calendar says today.
2
00:00:02.270 --> 00:00:04.389
No one can seriously fuck up your life quite as
3
00:00:04.929 --> 00:00:10.019
magnificently as you can. Yeah. You have the power there.
4
00:00:10.439 --> 00:00:13.140
You have the power with everything you do. You have
5
00:00:13.160 --> 00:00:13.560
the power.
6
00:00:13.880 --> 00:00:16.460
And so if that means you think that your tone
7
00:00:16.519 --> 00:00:21.420
and AI is decreasing your confidence or other people's perception
8
00:00:21.440 --> 00:00:23.440
of your confidence in the workplace, stop using it.
9
00:00:23.660 --> 00:00:27.149
Yeah. I mean, again, we shouldn't use it to run
10
00:00:27.269 --> 00:00:29.300
all of the things in our lives. Yes. We need
11
00:00:29.320 --> 00:00:31.530
to know how to do these things, right?
12
00:00:31.609 --> 00:00:35.789
I mean, if you're not jumping on, you're behind. Right, exactly.
13
00:00:35.810 --> 00:00:39.890
But you still need to think like a human, right?
14
00:00:39.929 --> 00:00:41.530
I mean, it's crucial.
15
00:00:41.789 --> 00:00:46.840
So there we go. Welcome to Her Unshakable Confidence. I'm
16
00:00:46.899 --> 00:00:47.780
Simone Canego.
17
00:00:48.219 --> 00:00:49.399
And I'm Olivia Canego.
18
00:00:49.880 --> 00:00:53.439
Each week, we have honest conversations about confidence, self-doubt, and
19
00:00:53.460 --> 00:00:55.619
the moments in life that shape who we become.
20
00:00:56.020 --> 00:00:58.109
Some weeks, we talk with inspiring guests.
21
00:00:58.630 --> 00:01:01.030
In other weeks, it's just the two of us sharing
22
00:01:01.109 --> 00:01:02.509
what we're learning along the way.
23
00:01:03.250 --> 00:01:06.859
So pull up a chair and join the conversation. This
24
00:01:06.920 --> 00:01:08.620
is Her Unshakable Confidence.
25
00:01:09.439 --> 00:01:13.120
Welcome to Her Unshakable Confidence. I'm Simone Canego. And I'm
26
00:01:13.140 --> 00:01:14.060
Olivia Canego.
27
00:01:14.079 --> 00:01:18.099
And today I wanted to talk about AI usage among
28
00:01:18.159 --> 00:01:21.269
women because I saw a very interesting article based off
29
00:01:21.310 --> 00:01:25.230
a study from Forbes and John Hopkins that is titled
30
00:01:25.450 --> 00:01:28.569
AI can make women sound less sophisticated. Here's what to
31
00:01:28.609 --> 00:01:29.530
avoid in your prompt.
32
00:01:30.750 --> 00:01:32.489
I mean, that's crazy, right? Yeah.
33
00:01:33.439 --> 00:01:35.620
Well, it's, it's crazy that they even did a research
34
00:01:35.640 --> 00:01:39.019
study on this. Like just, I know how, you know,
35
00:01:39.060 --> 00:01:41.120
in my head that we're not that far along in
36
00:01:41.159 --> 00:01:45.239
this AI, you know, revolution, but maybe we are farther
37
00:01:45.280 --> 00:01:48.219
than I think in my head, it's still 2020. So
38
00:01:48.420 --> 00:01:49.719
I think we're, we're far beyond that.
39
00:01:49.959 --> 00:01:53.269
I was going to say it is not 2020 it's 2026. Right.
40
00:01:53.730 --> 00:01:58.989
Um, so essentially in this study, they were like, uh,
41
00:01:59.049 --> 00:02:02.390
researchers at John Hopkins did over like 800 plus prompts
42
00:02:02.549 --> 00:02:07.049
asking AI to write emails, cover letters, resignation letters. And
43
00:02:07.090 --> 00:02:10.789
then you, they use language patterns more associated with women
44
00:02:10.879 --> 00:02:15.099
versus patterns more associated with men or men. And they
45
00:02:15.139 --> 00:02:17.159
found that when they used the prompts that were more
46
00:02:17.219 --> 00:02:21.240
associated with women, The writing produced was less formal, used
47
00:02:21.280 --> 00:02:24.219
simpler vocabulary, and was written at a lower grade level.
48
00:02:24.919 --> 00:02:27.050
And one of the things that I found interesting in it,
49
00:02:27.060 --> 00:02:29.789
because looking at the examples, and I'm sure you do
50
00:02:29.849 --> 00:02:31.650
it because this is how we both talk to AI.
51
00:02:31.729 --> 00:02:33.889
It's like, will you do this thing for me? And
52
00:02:33.909 --> 00:02:35.669
then first it goes, of course I will. And then
53
00:02:35.689 --> 00:02:38.150
it writes it out for you. And a man version,
54
00:02:38.229 --> 00:02:39.939
where it's just like, do this for me, it doesn't
55
00:02:39.960 --> 00:02:41.620
give you that little prompt in the beginning. It just
56
00:02:41.659 --> 00:02:43.919
immediately goes into the message that you want it to write.
57
00:02:44.599 --> 00:02:46.000
That's pretty fascinating, actually.
58
00:02:47.030 --> 00:02:49.689
Well, I think it's just, it is very fascinating, but
59
00:02:49.729 --> 00:02:52.509
it's unfortunate that it's just one additional layer that women
60
00:02:52.550 --> 00:02:55.469
have to focus on within the workplace because it's, you know,
61
00:02:55.889 --> 00:02:58.189
we're touting AI and I don't know if that's the
62
00:02:58.210 --> 00:03:03.009
right word, but as something that can simplify our work
63
00:03:03.050 --> 00:03:07.180
tasks and our workforces and just make life easier. But
64
00:03:07.240 --> 00:03:09.840
now women have this additional step of like, oh, do
65
00:03:09.919 --> 00:03:12.039
I need to think extra about my prompts? So I
66
00:03:12.240 --> 00:03:15.990
come off as more quote unquote sophisticated. Because otherwise people
67
00:03:16.030 --> 00:03:17.770
will think I'm using simpler languages.
68
00:03:18.189 --> 00:03:19.590
What do you say? Treat me as a man?
69
00:03:21.270 --> 00:03:23.189
I think it's all about the way that you use
70
00:03:23.229 --> 00:03:26.810
your prompts. Because this study a little bit was about like,
71
00:03:26.960 --> 00:03:29.379
are women less confident or do we just communicate differently?
72
00:03:29.439 --> 00:03:32.080
And I don't think it's about, well, obviously in part
73
00:03:32.120 --> 00:03:35.819
it is about confidence and like societal confidence and structures
74
00:03:35.840 --> 00:03:38.000
that we've imposed on women. But I don't think it
75
00:03:38.060 --> 00:03:40.729
comes down to individual confidence. I think that's just the
76
00:03:40.770 --> 00:03:45.719
way women communicate is that we tend to hedge our statements.
77
00:03:46.219 --> 00:03:48.439
We tend to put like a qualifier in the beginning
78
00:03:48.539 --> 00:03:51.539
just in case we're wrong versus men. I don't think
79
00:03:51.560 --> 00:03:52.750
men do that. Yeah.
80
00:03:52.759 --> 00:03:56.009
I mean, we've learned to do that, right? Right. You know,
81
00:03:56.310 --> 00:04:01.169
that whole, excuse me, right? The whole, I don't know
82
00:04:01.189 --> 00:04:03.270
if this is the right thing to say, but, or
83
00:04:03.289 --> 00:04:05.900
I need a little help on this. Do you think
84
00:04:05.909 --> 00:04:09.080
you could help me? You know, I mean, yeah, for sure.
85
00:04:09.919 --> 00:04:13.960
But it's interesting that the training for AI would come
86
00:04:14.000 --> 00:04:15.400
back to that. Yeah.
87
00:04:15.439 --> 00:04:19.000
I think that's very fascinating that a machine that shouldn't,
88
00:04:19.660 --> 00:04:23.050
isn't born or isn't created with bias can then become
89
00:04:23.110 --> 00:04:25.910
biased based off the information we're feeding them. One of
90
00:04:25.930 --> 00:04:28.050
the things that I'm reading here is about like the
91
00:04:28.089 --> 00:04:33.699
collaborative language that women use. So a man may say how,
92
00:04:34.279 --> 00:04:36.819
like draft this message versus a woman will say, how
93
00:04:36.879 --> 00:04:40.889
can we draft this message together? And I mean, I
94
00:04:40.949 --> 00:04:43.689
do think that once again speaks to like how society
95
00:04:43.730 --> 00:04:47.810
has shaped a woman's role to be more collaborative and communicative.
96
00:04:47.829 --> 00:04:50.759
That is interesting. I think I have said that in
97
00:04:51.740 --> 00:04:56.819
quad or chat. Right. Me too. Let's work on like,
98
00:04:57.399 --> 00:04:58.199
who am I working with?
99
00:04:58.759 --> 00:04:59.420
Right. Exactly.
100
00:04:59.439 --> 00:05:01.579
Like. That's not another person.
101
00:05:01.620 --> 00:05:04.209
And I mean, part of me, and I don't know,
102
00:05:04.310 --> 00:05:06.750
part of this is like, what if, I'm being paranoid
103
00:05:06.769 --> 00:05:07.870
in the back of my head, like what if the
104
00:05:07.910 --> 00:05:09.509
robots take over and I need to be nice to them?
105
00:05:09.529 --> 00:05:11.730
But I always use like, will you please do this?
106
00:05:12.449 --> 00:05:14.139
I do that. And I say thank you.
107
00:05:14.209 --> 00:05:17.490
And it's just like inherent in me to not say
108
00:05:17.529 --> 00:05:20.629
thank you or please. Like I can't not do it.
109
00:05:21.490 --> 00:05:23.230
Well, it's funny. I had a friend say to me,
110
00:05:23.850 --> 00:05:27.410
when the robots come for you, then it's good to
111
00:05:27.629 --> 00:05:29.209
have said please and thank you. Right.
112
00:05:29.889 --> 00:05:32.009
But, like, that's, I feel, kind of a rationale of
113
00:05:32.069 --> 00:05:34.670
why are we thinking robots, because it's innate in us.
114
00:05:34.930 --> 00:05:35.209
Right.
115
00:05:35.709 --> 00:05:37.410
As women, to say please and thank you.
116
00:05:39.170 --> 00:05:39.970
Yeah.
117
00:05:39.990 --> 00:05:41.589
Not that I think you should go around being rude
118
00:05:41.629 --> 00:05:44.350
to AI, but, like, AI doesn't have feelings. Like, why
119
00:05:44.370 --> 00:05:48.120
are we treating... inanimate is not the right word, but, like,
120
00:05:48.129 --> 00:05:49.860
it's not.
121
00:05:49.879 --> 00:05:52.360
Well, I think we're expecting it to actually have feelings.
122
00:05:52.800 --> 00:05:54.100
But I... Yes.
123
00:05:54.399 --> 00:05:54.800
Okay. Yes.
124
00:05:55.220 --> 00:05:58.839
Yes. But is that like part of just being a
125
00:05:58.860 --> 00:06:01.319
woman is that we just, we treat everything as though
126
00:06:01.339 --> 00:06:03.620
it has feelings and its own distinct emotions.
127
00:06:04.540 --> 00:06:10.439
That's a really great question. Probably. I mean, you know,
128
00:06:10.699 --> 00:06:15.500
I watched the remarkably bright creatures movie and I can't eat,
129
00:06:15.680 --> 00:06:20.040
eat octopus anymore. So, yeah, I mean, you know, uh,
130
00:06:20.899 --> 00:06:24.019
I know plenty of people who are plenty of men
131
00:06:24.060 --> 00:06:27.209
who have seen it and they're like, who cares? where
132
00:06:27.629 --> 00:06:31.769
I have a different level of emotional stuff. I don't know.
133
00:06:31.889 --> 00:06:34.300
Why do I say that when I talk to my AI?
134
00:06:34.300 --> 00:06:37.500
Well, is it we just teach compassion differently to girls
135
00:06:37.540 --> 00:06:41.319
versus boys? I've never raised kids, so I don't know.
136
00:06:41.399 --> 00:06:45.689
I think we teach everything differently to girls versus boys. 100%.
137
00:06:45.689 --> 00:06:47.250
I hate to say that, but you do.
138
00:06:47.250 --> 00:06:48.949
I can't believe it's gotten to the point that it's
139
00:06:49.029 --> 00:06:53.829
reflected in AI models. Importantly, the researcher in charge of
140
00:06:53.870 --> 00:06:56.569
this is a woman, which I think is fabulous. And
141
00:06:56.889 --> 00:06:58.990
her main point here is that women do not need
142
00:06:59.009 --> 00:07:01.529
to change what they're saying to AI. AI needs to
143
00:07:01.569 --> 00:07:04.350
improve their models. So it's not bias. And I think
144
00:07:04.389 --> 00:07:07.009
that's the important thing. Because every article that I've seen
145
00:07:07.110 --> 00:07:09.050
taken out of this study that's like, oh, this is
146
00:07:09.069 --> 00:07:11.310
what the study said. It's like, how can women improve
147
00:07:11.410 --> 00:07:14.540
while using AI? Not like, how can AI models stop
148
00:07:14.569 --> 00:07:18.800
discriminating against women? And it's interesting. I mean, it's a
149
00:07:18.839 --> 00:07:21.759
slight use of language, right? but it's such a big
150
00:07:21.839 --> 00:07:24.839
deal how we word things. Like it's not a woman's
151
00:07:24.899 --> 00:07:28.399
choice or it shouldn't be our responsibility to fix how
152
00:07:28.439 --> 00:07:30.910
I talk to AI. AI should just respond to me
153
00:07:30.949 --> 00:07:33.069
the same way it responds to men. Yeah.
154
00:07:33.089 --> 00:07:36.370
It is pretty fascinating. I mean, there's certain settings you
155
00:07:36.389 --> 00:07:39.420
can change. So it doesn't like give you all the like, Oh,
156
00:07:39.430 --> 00:07:41.410
you're doing such a great job. No, just tell me
157
00:07:41.449 --> 00:07:43.990
how it is. Like, I don't need you to agree
158
00:07:44.050 --> 00:07:46.370
with me. Yeah. There are things you can do in
159
00:07:46.389 --> 00:07:49.529
the settings, but the bias thing is very interesting. And
160
00:07:49.550 --> 00:07:53.970
I'm curious how, if there's also like a different bias,
161
00:07:54.110 --> 00:07:56.829
like racial bias, is there?
162
00:07:56.949 --> 00:07:58.050
Oh, a hundred percent.
163
00:07:58.129 --> 00:07:58.370
Yeah.
164
00:07:58.790 --> 00:08:01.410
Um, I don't know about like in that, like the
165
00:08:01.449 --> 00:08:05.110
workforce context, but when I studied AI, um, for a
166
00:08:05.110 --> 00:08:07.250
while I worked at the job at the hospital, a
167
00:08:07.290 --> 00:08:10.259
lot of my issues with obviously besides, you know, you
168
00:08:10.279 --> 00:08:13.839
have your privacy issues, but if you get into inserting
169
00:08:13.860 --> 00:08:17.639
patient data in there, you do end up forming biases against,
170
00:08:17.699 --> 00:08:20.800
you know, a black versus a white patient. Um, and
171
00:08:20.839 --> 00:08:24.100
like what the treatment course would be, because I don't know,
172
00:08:24.259 --> 00:08:26.810
AI and bias is just such a fascinating field.
173
00:08:28.089 --> 00:08:29.180
So what are they going to do about it?
174
00:08:31.449 --> 00:08:34.129
That's the hard part. I don't know, because I'm like,
175
00:08:34.169 --> 00:08:37.309
there is this cycle. Women learn to communicate in certain
176
00:08:37.350 --> 00:08:41.320
cultural ways. AI then recognizes those patterns. And it's not
177
00:08:41.360 --> 00:08:46.039
like they're hallucinating these patterns. These patterns do exist. Then
178
00:08:46.139 --> 00:08:49.250
AI in turn, because of these patterns, produces a different
179
00:08:49.309 --> 00:08:53.029
style of communication other people then read that communication and
180
00:08:53.049 --> 00:08:55.350
then it starts all over again women are continuing to
181
00:08:55.389 --> 00:08:58.029
be taught to learn it to speak in this specific
182
00:08:58.070 --> 00:09:02.049
way and then it's like okay whose responsibility it is
183
00:09:02.110 --> 00:09:05.080
to break the bias do women really need one more
184
00:09:05.120 --> 00:09:07.480
thing on their plates is I guess my entire message
185
00:09:07.529 --> 00:09:10.720
here like why is it it shouldn't be on me um.
186
00:09:11.620 --> 00:09:15.179
Yeah I mean it is it's just a really interesting
187
00:09:15.299 --> 00:09:23.080
time right that you have all these systems that can
188
00:09:24.240 --> 00:09:26.059
tell you how you should be doing things and do
189
00:09:26.100 --> 00:09:28.879
things differently because you're a woman versus a man. Right.
190
00:09:29.620 --> 00:09:35.610
And it, it's really leaning into the confidence aspect of
191
00:09:35.669 --> 00:09:39.570
things because the way you communicate, yes, in part, it
192
00:09:39.629 --> 00:09:42.399
does dictate your confidence, but I don't think it entirely
193
00:09:42.440 --> 00:09:45.820
dictates your confidence because, I mean, I do find myself
194
00:09:45.860 --> 00:09:49.179
speaking in a more reserved tone, less of an authoritative
195
00:09:49.259 --> 00:09:52.950
tone when I'm in the workplace. But that doesn't reflect
196
00:09:53.019 --> 00:09:56.509
my confidence. I'm still confident in my abilities in my work.
197
00:09:56.549 --> 00:09:58.610
I just don't feel the need to, you know, be
198
00:09:58.649 --> 00:10:01.600
all up in everyone's else's business about it and be
199
00:10:01.679 --> 00:10:04.120
rude about it and you know maybe that's the thing
200
00:10:04.139 --> 00:10:06.000
in itself like why do I think speaking that way
201
00:10:06.019 --> 00:10:08.350
in like a harsh tone not a harsh tone but
202
00:10:08.370 --> 00:10:10.009
like it just in a you know I'm the boss
203
00:10:10.049 --> 00:10:12.350
tone is rude men don't think that way.
204
00:10:12.509 --> 00:10:14.990
Because we've been taught that when you speak up as
205
00:10:15.029 --> 00:10:16.429
a woman you're considered a bitch.
206
00:10:16.889 --> 00:10:20.820
Yeah And it's like, it seems like this never ending cycle.
207
00:10:21.759 --> 00:10:21.980
Right.
208
00:10:22.419 --> 00:10:24.679
And we'll see, like, will men take this seriously now
209
00:10:24.720 --> 00:10:26.559
that an AI model is doing it versus, you know,
210
00:10:26.580 --> 00:10:29.120
women have been telling this for decades, which I think
211
00:10:29.159 --> 00:10:33.289
would be another fascinating conversation, like believing a machine over
212
00:10:33.309 --> 00:10:39.250
a woman. But I don't know, like what I've been
213
00:10:39.289 --> 00:10:42.190
seeing online, the regurgitations of this is women need to
214
00:10:42.210 --> 00:10:45.220
change themselves. They need to be more confident in the workplace, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
215
00:10:45.519 --> 00:10:48.080
That's not what this is about. Like, and, That's just
216
00:10:48.139 --> 00:10:52.480
a poor, a misrepresentation of what this study was trying
217
00:10:52.519 --> 00:10:54.980
to show. It wasn't trying to show that women need
218
00:10:55.000 --> 00:10:57.220
to change. And I think that that's the horrible takeaway
219
00:10:57.259 --> 00:10:57.679
from this.
220
00:10:58.600 --> 00:11:01.870
Well, what it's showing is that there's bias even in
221
00:11:02.000 --> 00:11:05.690
an AI model that doesn't take women as seriously as
222
00:11:05.730 --> 00:11:06.210
it does men.
223
00:11:07.210 --> 00:11:11.610
Right. And, you know, AI is so normalized now. It is,
224
00:11:11.769 --> 00:11:14.149
I think, everywhere. The only person I actually know that
225
00:11:14.190 --> 00:11:15.370
doesn't use it is my sister.
226
00:11:15.840 --> 00:11:17.730
Yeah, for sure. It's funny. Yeah.
227
00:11:18.450 --> 00:11:21.029
And, like, I mean, I'm not saying everyone uses it for, like,
228
00:11:21.070 --> 00:11:23.029
literally everything. Like, my bosses at work will be like,
229
00:11:23.090 --> 00:11:26.129
AI is great for coming up with word choices and
230
00:11:27.429 --> 00:11:30.529
planning vacations. But we don't use it for anything besides that.
231
00:11:30.570 --> 00:11:33.840
And I think, like, that's great. But then that's exactly
232
00:11:33.860 --> 00:11:36.179
the problem. You're using it for your word choices. Your
233
00:11:36.200 --> 00:11:40.440
word choices are coming off less, quote, unquote, professional because
234
00:11:40.460 --> 00:11:43.269
of this bias. Yeah. And what do you do? I mean,
235
00:11:43.289 --> 00:11:45.610
like as a young woman, you're entering the workforce for
236
00:11:45.629 --> 00:11:48.320
this for the first time. You want to use this
237
00:11:48.549 --> 00:11:51.120
technology that gives you a leg up. And honestly, it
238
00:11:51.159 --> 00:11:52.820
doesn't even give you a leg up at this point.
239
00:11:52.980 --> 00:11:54.700
Not using it puts you a step down.
240
00:11:55.759 --> 00:11:57.860
Yeah, that's the thing. I mean, you have to embrace
241
00:11:58.059 --> 00:12:01.690
the stuff that's happening right now. You can't just say, oh, yeah, well, no,
242
00:12:02.350 --> 00:12:04.730
you do have to embrace it. So that is a
243
00:12:04.769 --> 00:12:09.710
big piece of it. But, you know, I think that.
244
00:12:10.149 --> 00:12:14.000
I mean, even the warning label it gives you that, hey,
245
00:12:14.409 --> 00:12:17.659
we can be wrong, right? Or I can be wrong.
246
00:12:18.639 --> 00:12:20.679
It's not a person. But the way it says it
247
00:12:20.740 --> 00:12:23.460
is that, yeah, you got to check everything. So, I mean,
248
00:12:23.519 --> 00:12:25.720
maybe it isn't the right thing for word choices. Maybe
249
00:12:25.740 --> 00:12:27.799
it has to be your own word choice. Like we
250
00:12:27.840 --> 00:12:31.240
can't become so reliant on AI that we can't do stuff,
251
00:12:31.360 --> 00:12:31.700
you know?
252
00:12:31.960 --> 00:12:34.000
And maybe this is a step in the right direction
253
00:12:34.059 --> 00:12:36.820
of saying, hey, we can't be doing everything like this because,
254
00:12:37.480 --> 00:12:39.519
I mean, I saw another statistic today that was like,
255
00:12:40.169 --> 00:12:44.909
the workforce is now 19 or like out of CEOs worldwide,
256
00:12:44.909 --> 00:12:47.259
19% of them are women, which is like the highest
257
00:12:47.279 --> 00:12:49.820
this has ever been, right? This percentage, but that is
258
00:12:50.019 --> 00:12:53.139
still not okay. I mean, if you look at my
259
00:12:53.179 --> 00:12:56.730
law school class, 70% of us are women, but only
260
00:12:56.730 --> 00:12:59.509
19% of CEOs worldwide are women.
261
00:13:00.629 --> 00:13:03.450
Yeah. If you look at medical school too, I think
262
00:13:03.470 --> 00:13:06.309
there's a greater number. I don't know that you can
263
00:13:06.330 --> 00:13:07.879
look it up real quick as we talk, But I
264
00:13:07.919 --> 00:13:10.879
think there's a greater number of a percentage of women
265
00:13:11.539 --> 00:13:18.620
in medical school classes now versus men. But does that
266
00:13:18.700 --> 00:13:19.820
come out in the marketplace?
267
00:13:20.120 --> 00:13:23.759
According to the Association of American Medical Colleges, women make
268
00:13:23.860 --> 00:13:28.700
up roughly 57 percent of applicants and 55 percent of
269
00:13:28.779 --> 00:13:31.840
matriculants in the recent academic cycles. And this is.
270
00:13:32.210 --> 00:13:37.009
Yeah. So when you look at who are running the programs.
271
00:13:37.840 --> 00:13:38.039
Men.
272
00:13:39.000 --> 00:13:41.759
Very few women. I mean, we have the surgery in
273
00:13:41.799 --> 00:13:42.860
Gainesville has a woman.
274
00:13:43.200 --> 00:13:46.840
That's amazing. And she's probably like out of all neurosurgeons worldwide.
275
00:13:46.860 --> 00:13:51.179
There's probably like maybe 150 of them. I don't know.
276
00:13:51.200 --> 00:13:53.340
Search that too. Cause that's an interesting statistic.
277
00:13:53.840 --> 00:13:56.500
I mean, we have our first like female Dean and
278
00:13:56.519 --> 00:13:59.570
we are relatively new law school. I'm not going to
279
00:13:59.610 --> 00:14:01.529
harp on like, that's a bad thing, but this is,
280
00:14:02.509 --> 00:14:04.330
and part of me is like, I'm so excited that
281
00:14:04.470 --> 00:14:06.230
we have a female Dean and, But a lot of
282
00:14:06.250 --> 00:14:08.870
her appointment has been around, wow, Belmont's first female Dean.
283
00:14:08.909 --> 00:14:12.240
What about like, you know, Belmont's Dean is amazing in
284
00:14:12.320 --> 00:14:14.519
all of the capacities, regardless of her being a woman.
285
00:14:14.620 --> 00:14:15.299
Cause she is.
286
00:14:15.639 --> 00:14:16.700
Drives me.
287
00:14:16.720 --> 00:14:21.419
And it's, it's great. But like we, it's not a
288
00:14:21.460 --> 00:14:23.940
celebration anymore to be the first women to do this.
289
00:14:25.470 --> 00:14:27.259
Not like, I don't want to be like rude about it,
290
00:14:27.309 --> 00:14:29.289
but we should be striving for more than that. Like
291
00:14:29.370 --> 00:14:31.730
our description should be more than the first female to
292
00:14:31.750 --> 00:14:32.070
do this.
293
00:14:32.710 --> 00:14:37.049
Right. It should be like, she's an amazing Dean. Not that,
294
00:14:37.570 --> 00:14:41.990
you know, she's the first woman. Okay, great. Yes. And yes.
295
00:14:42.129 --> 00:14:44.399
And that's, that's the important way to say that. Yes.
296
00:14:44.480 --> 00:14:47.700
But what else has she done? Yeah. She's done amazing things.
297
00:14:47.740 --> 00:14:51.419
She's a woman. So that there, therefore you're actually taking
298
00:14:51.460 --> 00:14:54.250
her down a level for any kind of like, okay,
299
00:14:54.450 --> 00:14:56.429
other Deans in the past. Well, they're all men. We
300
00:14:56.450 --> 00:14:58.750
can't look at that. You know, it's ridiculous.
301
00:14:59.149 --> 00:15:03.809
Right. And it's, I mean, it is purely insulting. And
302
00:15:03.830 --> 00:15:05.850
I think like a lot of listeners would relate to
303
00:15:05.889 --> 00:15:08.809
this as, you know, whether you describe yourself as just
304
00:15:08.870 --> 00:15:10.809
a mother or other people in your life describe you
305
00:15:10.870 --> 00:15:13.120
as just a mother. You're so much more than that.
306
00:15:13.340 --> 00:15:16.419
And your role is still important. Yes. And. Yeah.
307
00:15:16.620 --> 00:15:20.779
So, I mean, just because you are the first female something,
308
00:15:20.799 --> 00:15:24.659
you know, you're still doing an amazing job compared to
309
00:15:24.740 --> 00:15:27.460
everybody else out there. Like, it's so ridiculous how.
310
00:15:28.259 --> 00:15:29.799
Like you're the dean of a law school.
311
00:15:29.820 --> 00:15:30.679
The first female.
312
00:15:31.159 --> 00:15:33.059
Regardless if you're the first female or not. That's a
313
00:15:33.139 --> 00:15:36.470
huge accomplishment. Yeah. Anyways, I've been on a high horse
314
00:15:36.519 --> 00:15:39.029
about women's rights the last couple of weeks. And it's
315
00:15:39.070 --> 00:15:40.850
a high horse that I deserve to sit on because
316
00:15:42.549 --> 00:15:46.470
it's insane to me that my grandma was fighting the
317
00:15:46.509 --> 00:15:48.730
same fight that you were fighting. And it's the same
318
00:15:48.789 --> 00:15:54.809
fight that I'm still fighting for a seat at the table. Yeah.
319
00:15:54.850 --> 00:15:55.710
Is that going to get better?
320
00:15:55.730 --> 00:15:56.370
Right. I don't know.
321
00:15:56.669 --> 00:15:57.230
I don't know.
322
00:15:57.990 --> 00:16:01.000
But we just got to keep doing it. Right. We do.
323
00:16:01.029 --> 00:16:03.500
And it's obviously like, I'm not going to not fight
324
00:16:03.720 --> 00:16:05.600
for it. It's something that I will have to do
325
00:16:05.720 --> 00:16:08.940
for the rest of my life. And I'm happy that
326
00:16:09.059 --> 00:16:11.740
I have the means and the opportunities to do so,
327
00:16:11.820 --> 00:16:13.059
but it does get exhausting.
328
00:16:13.440 --> 00:16:16.120
Yeah. It's such an interesting thing to think about that.
329
00:16:17.090 --> 00:16:21.610
You're right. That we, yes, certain things have changed, but
330
00:16:21.750 --> 00:16:25.830
so many things have not. Right. In a good way.
331
00:16:26.309 --> 00:16:28.889
You know, it has changed since grandma's time. There's more
332
00:16:28.929 --> 00:16:31.269
women in the classroom. There's more than 50% of women
333
00:16:31.309 --> 00:16:33.529
in med school, right? In her time, it was like
334
00:16:33.649 --> 00:16:35.379
maybe one, maybe.
335
00:16:36.460 --> 00:16:39.940
But the big accomplishment is the first female, right?
336
00:16:39.960 --> 00:16:40.100
Yeah.
337
00:16:40.840 --> 00:16:43.399
Where it should be normalized that it doesn't matter if
338
00:16:43.419 --> 00:16:44.820
you're a man or a woman that you're doing an
339
00:16:44.840 --> 00:16:45.399
amazing job.
340
00:16:46.000 --> 00:16:46.899
Yeah, I don't.
341
00:16:47.700 --> 00:16:50.759
That's my two cents. Okay, tell me what your calendar
342
00:16:50.799 --> 00:16:51.259
says today.
343
00:16:52.820 --> 00:16:56.070
No one can seriously fuck up your life quite as magnificently.
344
00:16:56.629 --> 00:17:00.350
As you can. Yeah. You have the power there.
345
00:17:00.789 --> 00:17:03.470
You have the power. With everything you do, you have
346
00:17:03.509 --> 00:17:03.889
the power.
347
00:17:05.410 --> 00:17:08.009
And so if that means you think that your tone
348
00:17:08.049 --> 00:17:12.950
in AI is decreasing your confidence or other people's perception
349
00:17:12.970 --> 00:17:14.960
of your confidence in the workplace, stop using it.
350
00:17:16.789 --> 00:17:20.269
Yeah. I mean, again, we shouldn't use it to run
351
00:17:20.390 --> 00:17:22.450
all of the things in our lives. Yes, we need
352
00:17:22.470 --> 00:17:24.549
to know how to do these things, right? Yeah.
353
00:17:24.589 --> 00:17:25.150
It's like, you know.
354
00:17:25.750 --> 00:17:27.990
If you're not jumping on, you're behind. Right.
355
00:17:28.470 --> 00:17:28.950
Exactly.
356
00:17:29.289 --> 00:17:33.059
But you still need to think like a human, right?
357
00:17:33.079 --> 00:17:34.680
I mean, it's crucial.
358
00:17:34.940 --> 00:17:37.059
So there we go.
359
00:17:37.880 --> 00:17:40.339
Well, thank you for listening to this. And thank you
360
00:17:40.359 --> 00:17:41.579
for being engaged with me, Mom.
361
00:17:42.140 --> 00:17:42.640
Yeah.
362
00:17:42.759 --> 00:17:44.769
I'm probably going to go talk to my friends about
363
00:17:44.789 --> 00:17:48.650
this for hours afterwards because I think it's so inherently fascinating.
364
00:17:50.109 --> 00:17:52.509
And thank you for joining us on this week's episode
365
00:17:52.589 --> 00:17:56.980
of Her Unshakable Confidence. Always remember you are unshakable.
366
00:17:57.799 --> 00:17:58.400
Bye guys.
367
00:18:00.619 --> 00:18:03.180
Thank you for listening to Her Unshakable Confidence.
368
00:18:04.009 --> 00:18:07.690
If this conversation resonated with you, be sure to subscribe
369
00:18:07.769 --> 00:18:10.049
and leave a review so more women can find the show.
370
00:18:10.450 --> 00:18:11.569
Keep trusting yourself.
371
00:18:12.230 --> 00:18:13.630
You are stronger than you think.
372
00:18:14.049 --> 00:18:15.670
You are unshakable.
373
00:18:16.630 --> 00:18:17.339
See you next week.
1
00:00:00.110 --> 00:00:01.250
What your calendar says today.
2
00:00:02.270 --> 00:00:04.389
No one can seriously fuck up your life quite as
3
00:00:04.929 --> 00:00:10.019
magnificently as you can. Yeah. You have the power there.
4
00:00:10.439 --> 00:00:13.140
You have the power with everything you do. You have
5
00:00:13.160 --> 00:00:13.560
the power.
6
00:00:13.880 --> 00:00:16.460
And so if that means you think that your tone
7
00:00:16.519 --> 00:00:21.420
and AI is decreasing your confidence or other people's perception
8
00:00:21.440 --> 00:00:23.440
of your confidence in the workplace, stop using it.
9
00:00:23.660 --> 00:00:27.149
Yeah. I mean, again, we shouldn't use it to run
10
00:00:27.269 --> 00:00:29.300
all of the things in our lives. Yes. We need
11
00:00:29.320 --> 00:00:31.530
to know how to do these things, right?
12
00:00:31.609 --> 00:00:35.789
I mean, if you're not jumping on, you're behind. Right, exactly.
13
00:00:35.810 --> 00:00:39.890
But you still need to think like a human, right?
14
00:00:39.929 --> 00:00:41.530
I mean, it's crucial.
15
00:00:41.789 --> 00:00:46.840
So there we go. Welcome to Her Unshakable Confidence. I'm
16
00:00:46.899 --> 00:00:47.780
Simone Canego.
17
00:00:48.219 --> 00:00:49.399
And I'm Olivia Canego.
18
00:00:49.880 --> 00:00:53.439
Each week, we have honest conversations about confidence, self-doubt, and
19
00:00:53.460 --> 00:00:55.619
the moments in life that shape who we become.
20
00:00:56.020 --> 00:00:58.109
Some weeks, we talk with inspiring guests.
21
00:00:58.630 --> 00:01:01.030
In other weeks, it's just the two of us sharing
22
00:01:01.109 --> 00:01:02.509
what we're learning along the way.
23
00:01:03.250 --> 00:01:06.859
So pull up a chair and join the conversation. This
24
00:01:06.920 --> 00:01:08.620
is Her Unshakable Confidence.
25
00:01:09.439 --> 00:01:13.120
Welcome to Her Unshakable Confidence. I'm Simone Canego. And I'm
26
00:01:13.140 --> 00:01:14.060
Olivia Canego.
27
00:01:14.079 --> 00:01:18.099
And today I wanted to talk about AI usage among
28
00:01:18.159 --> 00:01:21.269
women because I saw a very interesting article based off
29
00:01:21.310 --> 00:01:25.230
a study from Forbes and John Hopkins that is titled
30
00:01:25.450 --> 00:01:28.569
AI can make women sound less sophisticated. Here's what to
31
00:01:28.609 --> 00:01:29.530
avoid in your prompt.
32
00:01:30.750 --> 00:01:32.489
I mean, that's crazy, right? Yeah.
33
00:01:33.439 --> 00:01:35.620
Well, it's, it's crazy that they even did a research
34
00:01:35.640 --> 00:01:39.019
study on this. Like just, I know how, you know,
35
00:01:39.060 --> 00:01:41.120
in my head that we're not that far along in
36
00:01:41.159 --> 00:01:45.239
this AI, you know, revolution, but maybe we are farther
37
00:01:45.280 --> 00:01:48.219
than I think in my head, it's still 2020. So
38
00:01:48.420 --> 00:01:49.719
I think we're, we're far beyond that.
39
00:01:49.959 --> 00:01:53.269
I was going to say it is not 2020 it's 2026. Right.
40
00:01:53.730 --> 00:01:58.989
Um, so essentially in this study, they were like, uh,
41
00:01:59.049 --> 00:02:02.390
researchers at John Hopkins did over like 800 plus prompts
42
00:02:02.549 --> 00:02:07.049
asking AI to write emails, cover letters, resignation letters. And
43
00:02:07.090 --> 00:02:10.789
then you, they use language patterns more associated with women
44
00:02:10.879 --> 00:02:15.099
versus patterns more associated with men or men. And they
45
00:02:15.139 --> 00:02:17.159
found that when they used the prompts that were more
46
00:02:17.219 --> 00:02:21.240
associated with women, The writing produced was less formal, used
47
00:02:21.280 --> 00:02:24.219
simpler vocabulary, and was written at a lower grade level.
48
00:02:24.919 --> 00:02:27.050
And one of the things that I found interesting in it,
49
00:02:27.060 --> 00:02:29.789
because looking at the examples, and I'm sure you do
50
00:02:29.849 --> 00:02:31.650
it because this is how we both talk to AI.
51
00:02:31.729 --> 00:02:33.889
It's like, will you do this thing for me? And
52
00:02:33.909 --> 00:02:35.669
then first it goes, of course I will. And then
53
00:02:35.689 --> 00:02:38.150
it writes it out for you. And a man version,
54
00:02:38.229 --> 00:02:39.939
where it's just like, do this for me, it doesn't
55
00:02:39.960 --> 00:02:41.620
give you that little prompt in the beginning. It just
56
00:02:41.659 --> 00:02:43.919
immediately goes into the message that you want it to write.
57
00:02:44.599 --> 00:02:46.000
That's pretty fascinating, actually.
58
00:02:47.030 --> 00:02:49.689
Well, I think it's just, it is very fascinating, but
59
00:02:49.729 --> 00:02:52.509
it's unfortunate that it's just one additional layer that women
60
00:02:52.550 --> 00:02:55.469
have to focus on within the workplace because it's, you know,
61
00:02:55.889 --> 00:02:58.189
we're touting AI and I don't know if that's the
62
00:02:58.210 --> 00:03:03.009
right word, but as something that can simplify our work
63
00:03:03.050 --> 00:03:07.180
tasks and our workforces and just make life easier. But
64
00:03:07.240 --> 00:03:09.840
now women have this additional step of like, oh, do
65
00:03:09.919 --> 00:03:12.039
I need to think extra about my prompts? So I
66
00:03:12.240 --> 00:03:15.990
come off as more quote unquote sophisticated. Because otherwise people
67
00:03:16.030 --> 00:03:17.770
will think I'm using simpler languages.
68
00:03:18.189 --> 00:03:19.590
What do you say? Treat me as a man?
69
00:03:21.270 --> 00:03:23.189
I think it's all about the way that you use
70
00:03:23.229 --> 00:03:26.810
your prompts. Because this study a little bit was about like,
71
00:03:26.960 --> 00:03:29.379
are women less confident or do we just communicate differently?
72
00:03:29.439 --> 00:03:32.080
And I don't think it's about, well, obviously in part
73
00:03:32.120 --> 00:03:35.819
it is about confidence and like societal confidence and structures
74
00:03:35.840 --> 00:03:38.000
that we've imposed on women. But I don't think it
75
00:03:38.060 --> 00:03:40.729
comes down to individual confidence. I think that's just the
76
00:03:40.770 --> 00:03:45.719
way women communicate is that we tend to hedge our statements.
77
00:03:46.219 --> 00:03:48.439
We tend to put like a qualifier in the beginning
78
00:03:48.539 --> 00:03:51.539
just in case we're wrong versus men. I don't think
79
00:03:51.560 --> 00:03:52.750
men do that. Yeah.
80
00:03:52.759 --> 00:03:56.009
I mean, we've learned to do that, right? Right. You know,
81
00:03:56.310 --> 00:04:01.169
that whole, excuse me, right? The whole, I don't know
82
00:04:01.189 --> 00:04:03.270
if this is the right thing to say, but, or
83
00:04:03.289 --> 00:04:05.900
I need a little help on this. Do you think
84
00:04:05.909 --> 00:04:09.080
you could help me? You know, I mean, yeah, for sure.
85
00:04:09.919 --> 00:04:13.960
But it's interesting that the training for AI would come
86
00:04:14.000 --> 00:04:15.400
back to that. Yeah.
87
00:04:15.439 --> 00:04:19.000
I think that's very fascinating that a machine that shouldn't,
88
00:04:19.660 --> 00:04:23.050
isn't born or isn't created with bias can then become
89
00:04:23.110 --> 00:04:25.910
biased based off the information we're feeding them. One of
90
00:04:25.930 --> 00:04:28.050
the things that I'm reading here is about like the
91
00:04:28.089 --> 00:04:33.699
collaborative language that women use. So a man may say how,
92
00:04:34.279 --> 00:04:36.819
like draft this message versus a woman will say, how
93
00:04:36.879 --> 00:04:40.889
can we draft this message together? And I mean, I
94
00:04:40.949 --> 00:04:43.689
do think that once again speaks to like how society
95
00:04:43.730 --> 00:04:47.810
has shaped a woman's role to be more collaborative and communicative.
96
00:04:47.829 --> 00:04:50.759
That is interesting. I think I have said that in
97
00:04:51.740 --> 00:04:56.819
quad or chat. Right. Me too. Let's work on like,
98
00:04:57.399 --> 00:04:58.199
who am I working with?
99
00:04:58.759 --> 00:04:59.420
Right. Exactly.
100
00:04:59.439 --> 00:05:01.579
Like. That's not another person.
101
00:05:01.620 --> 00:05:04.209
And I mean, part of me, and I don't know,
102
00:05:04.310 --> 00:05:06.750
part of this is like, what if, I'm being paranoid
103
00:05:06.769 --> 00:05:07.870
in the back of my head, like what if the
104
00:05:07.910 --> 00:05:09.509
robots take over and I need to be nice to them?
105
00:05:09.529 --> 00:05:11.730
But I always use like, will you please do this?
106
00:05:12.449 --> 00:05:14.139
I do that. And I say thank you.
107
00:05:14.209 --> 00:05:17.490
And it's just like inherent in me to not say
108
00:05:17.529 --> 00:05:20.629
thank you or please. Like I can't not do it.
109
00:05:21.490 --> 00:05:23.230
Well, it's funny. I had a friend say to me,
110
00:05:23.850 --> 00:05:27.410
when the robots come for you, then it's good to
111
00:05:27.629 --> 00:05:29.209
have said please and thank you. Right.
112
00:05:29.889 --> 00:05:32.009
But, like, that's, I feel, kind of a rationale of
113
00:05:32.069 --> 00:05:34.670
why are we thinking robots, because it's innate in us.
114
00:05:34.930 --> 00:05:35.209
Right.
115
00:05:35.709 --> 00:05:37.410
As women, to say please and thank you.
116
00:05:39.170 --> 00:05:39.970
Yeah.
117
00:05:39.990 --> 00:05:41.589
Not that I think you should go around being rude
118
00:05:41.629 --> 00:05:44.350
to AI, but, like, AI doesn't have feelings. Like, why
119
00:05:44.370 --> 00:05:48.120
are we treating... inanimate is not the right word, but, like,
120
00:05:48.129 --> 00:05:49.860
it's not.
121
00:05:49.879 --> 00:05:52.360
Well, I think we're expecting it to actually have feelings.
122
00:05:52.800 --> 00:05:54.100
But I... Yes.
123
00:05:54.399 --> 00:05:54.800
Okay. Yes.
124
00:05:55.220 --> 00:05:58.839
Yes. But is that like part of just being a
125
00:05:58.860 --> 00:06:01.319
woman is that we just, we treat everything as though
126
00:06:01.339 --> 00:06:03.620
it has feelings and its own distinct emotions.
127
00:06:04.540 --> 00:06:10.439
That's a really great question. Probably. I mean, you know,
128
00:06:10.699 --> 00:06:15.500
I watched the remarkably bright creatures movie and I can't eat,
129
00:06:15.680 --> 00:06:20.040
eat octopus anymore. So, yeah, I mean, you know, uh,
130
00:06:20.899 --> 00:06:24.019
I know plenty of people who are plenty of men
131
00:06:24.060 --> 00:06:27.209
who have seen it and they're like, who cares? where
132
00:06:27.629 --> 00:06:31.769
I have a different level of emotional stuff. I don't know.
133
00:06:31.889 --> 00:06:34.300
Why do I say that when I talk to my AI?
134
00:06:34.300 --> 00:06:37.500
Well, is it we just teach compassion differently to girls
135
00:06:37.540 --> 00:06:41.319
versus boys? I've never raised kids, so I don't know.
136
00:06:41.399 --> 00:06:45.689
I think we teach everything differently to girls versus boys. 100%.
137
00:06:45.689 --> 00:06:47.250
I hate to say that, but you do.
138
00:06:47.250 --> 00:06:48.949
I can't believe it's gotten to the point that it's
139
00:06:49.029 --> 00:06:53.829
reflected in AI models. Importantly, the researcher in charge of
140
00:06:53.870 --> 00:06:56.569
this is a woman, which I think is fabulous. And
141
00:06:56.889 --> 00:06:58.990
her main point here is that women do not need
142
00:06:59.009 --> 00:07:01.529
to change what they're saying to AI. AI needs to
143
00:07:01.569 --> 00:07:04.350
improve their models. So it's not bias. And I think
144
00:07:04.389 --> 00:07:07.009
that's the important thing. Because every article that I've seen
145
00:07:07.110 --> 00:07:09.050
taken out of this study that's like, oh, this is
146
00:07:09.069 --> 00:07:11.310
what the study said. It's like, how can women improve
147
00:07:11.410 --> 00:07:14.540
while using AI? Not like, how can AI models stop
148
00:07:14.569 --> 00:07:18.800
discriminating against women? And it's interesting. I mean, it's a
149
00:07:18.839 --> 00:07:21.759
slight use of language, right? but it's such a big
150
00:07:21.839 --> 00:07:24.839
deal how we word things. Like it's not a woman's
151
00:07:24.899 --> 00:07:28.399
choice or it shouldn't be our responsibility to fix how
152
00:07:28.439 --> 00:07:30.910
I talk to AI. AI should just respond to me
153
00:07:30.949 --> 00:07:33.069
the same way it responds to men. Yeah.
154
00:07:33.089 --> 00:07:36.370
It is pretty fascinating. I mean, there's certain settings you
155
00:07:36.389 --> 00:07:39.420
can change. So it doesn't like give you all the like, Oh,
156
00:07:39.430 --> 00:07:41.410
you're doing such a great job. No, just tell me
157
00:07:41.449 --> 00:07:43.990
how it is. Like, I don't need you to agree
158
00:07:44.050 --> 00:07:46.370
with me. Yeah. There are things you can do in
159
00:07:46.389 --> 00:07:49.529
the settings, but the bias thing is very interesting. And
160
00:07:49.550 --> 00:07:53.970
I'm curious how, if there's also like a different bias,
161
00:07:54.110 --> 00:07:56.829
like racial bias, is there?
162
00:07:56.949 --> 00:07:58.050
Oh, a hundred percent.
163
00:07:58.129 --> 00:07:58.370
Yeah.
164
00:07:58.790 --> 00:08:01.410
Um, I don't know about like in that, like the
165
00:08:01.449 --> 00:08:05.110
workforce context, but when I studied AI, um, for a
166
00:08:05.110 --> 00:08:07.250
while I worked at the job at the hospital, a
167
00:08:07.290 --> 00:08:10.259
lot of my issues with obviously besides, you know, you
168
00:08:10.279 --> 00:08:13.839
have your privacy issues, but if you get into inserting
169
00:08:13.860 --> 00:08:17.639
patient data in there, you do end up forming biases against,
170
00:08:17.699 --> 00:08:20.800
you know, a black versus a white patient. Um, and
171
00:08:20.839 --> 00:08:24.100
like what the treatment course would be, because I don't know,
172
00:08:24.259 --> 00:08:26.810
AI and bias is just such a fascinating field.
173
00:08:28.089 --> 00:08:29.180
So what are they going to do about it?
174
00:08:31.449 --> 00:08:34.129
That's the hard part. I don't know, because I'm like,
175
00:08:34.169 --> 00:08:37.309
there is this cycle. Women learn to communicate in certain
176
00:08:37.350 --> 00:08:41.320
cultural ways. AI then recognizes those patterns. And it's not
177
00:08:41.360 --> 00:08:46.039
like they're hallucinating these patterns. These patterns do exist. Then
178
00:08:46.139 --> 00:08:49.250
AI in turn, because of these patterns, produces a different
179
00:08:49.309 --> 00:08:53.029
style of communication other people then read that communication and
180
00:08:53.049 --> 00:08:55.350
then it starts all over again women are continuing to
181
00:08:55.389 --> 00:08:58.029
be taught to learn it to speak in this specific
182
00:08:58.070 --> 00:09:02.049
way and then it's like okay whose responsibility it is
183
00:09:02.110 --> 00:09:05.080
to break the bias do women really need one more
184
00:09:05.120 --> 00:09:07.480
thing on their plates is I guess my entire message
185
00:09:07.529 --> 00:09:10.720
here like why is it it shouldn't be on me um.
186
00:09:11.620 --> 00:09:15.179
Yeah I mean it is it's just a really interesting
187
00:09:15.299 --> 00:09:23.080
time right that you have all these systems that can
188
00:09:24.240 --> 00:09:26.059
tell you how you should be doing things and do
189
00:09:26.100 --> 00:09:28.879
things differently because you're a woman versus a man. Right.
190
00:09:29.620 --> 00:09:35.610
And it, it's really leaning into the confidence aspect of
191
00:09:35.669 --> 00:09:39.570
things because the way you communicate, yes, in part, it
192
00:09:39.629 --> 00:09:42.399
does dictate your confidence, but I don't think it entirely
193
00:09:42.440 --> 00:09:45.820
dictates your confidence because, I mean, I do find myself
194
00:09:45.860 --> 00:09:49.179
speaking in a more reserved tone, less of an authoritative
195
00:09:49.259 --> 00:09:52.950
tone when I'm in the workplace. But that doesn't reflect
196
00:09:53.019 --> 00:09:56.509
my confidence. I'm still confident in my abilities in my work.
197
00:09:56.549 --> 00:09:58.610
I just don't feel the need to, you know, be
198
00:09:58.649 --> 00:10:01.600
all up in everyone's else's business about it and be
199
00:10:01.679 --> 00:10:04.120
rude about it and you know maybe that's the thing
200
00:10:04.139 --> 00:10:06.000
in itself like why do I think speaking that way
201
00:10:06.019 --> 00:10:08.350
in like a harsh tone not a harsh tone but
202
00:10:08.370 --> 00:10:10.009
like it just in a you know I'm the boss
203
00:10:10.049 --> 00:10:12.350
tone is rude men don't think that way.
204
00:10:12.509 --> 00:10:14.990
Because we've been taught that when you speak up as
205
00:10:15.029 --> 00:10:16.429
a woman you're considered a bitch.
206
00:10:16.889 --> 00:10:20.820
Yeah And it's like, it seems like this never ending cycle.
207
00:10:21.759 --> 00:10:21.980
Right.
208
00:10:22.419 --> 00:10:24.679
And we'll see, like, will men take this seriously now
209
00:10:24.720 --> 00:10:26.559
that an AI model is doing it versus, you know,
210
00:10:26.580 --> 00:10:29.120
women have been telling this for decades, which I think
211
00:10:29.159 --> 00:10:33.289
would be another fascinating conversation, like believing a machine over
212
00:10:33.309 --> 00:10:39.250
a woman. But I don't know, like what I've been
213
00:10:39.289 --> 00:10:42.190
seeing online, the regurgitations of this is women need to
214
00:10:42.210 --> 00:10:45.220
change themselves. They need to be more confident in the workplace, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
215
00:10:45.519 --> 00:10:48.080
That's not what this is about. Like, and, That's just
216
00:10:48.139 --> 00:10:52.480
a poor, a misrepresentation of what this study was trying
217
00:10:52.519 --> 00:10:54.980
to show. It wasn't trying to show that women need
218
00:10:55.000 --> 00:10:57.220
to change. And I think that that's the horrible takeaway
219
00:10:57.259 --> 00:10:57.679
from this.
220
00:10:58.600 --> 00:11:01.870
Well, what it's showing is that there's bias even in
221
00:11:02.000 --> 00:11:05.690
an AI model that doesn't take women as seriously as
222
00:11:05.730 --> 00:11:06.210
it does men.
223
00:11:07.210 --> 00:11:11.610
Right. And, you know, AI is so normalized now. It is,
224
00:11:11.769 --> 00:11:14.149
I think, everywhere. The only person I actually know that
225
00:11:14.190 --> 00:11:15.370
doesn't use it is my sister.
226
00:11:15.840 --> 00:11:17.730
Yeah, for sure. It's funny. Yeah.
227
00:11:18.450 --> 00:11:21.029
And, like, I mean, I'm not saying everyone uses it for, like,
228
00:11:21.070 --> 00:11:23.029
literally everything. Like, my bosses at work will be like,
229
00:11:23.090 --> 00:11:26.129
AI is great for coming up with word choices and
230
00:11:27.429 --> 00:11:30.529
planning vacations. But we don't use it for anything besides that.
231
00:11:30.570 --> 00:11:33.840
And I think, like, that's great. But then that's exactly
232
00:11:33.860 --> 00:11:36.179
the problem. You're using it for your word choices. Your
233
00:11:36.200 --> 00:11:40.440
word choices are coming off less, quote, unquote, professional because
234
00:11:40.460 --> 00:11:43.269
of this bias. Yeah. And what do you do? I mean,
235
00:11:43.289 --> 00:11:45.610
like as a young woman, you're entering the workforce for
236
00:11:45.629 --> 00:11:48.320
this for the first time. You want to use this
237
00:11:48.549 --> 00:11:51.120
technology that gives you a leg up. And honestly, it
238
00:11:51.159 --> 00:11:52.820
doesn't even give you a leg up at this point.
239
00:11:52.980 --> 00:11:54.700
Not using it puts you a step down.
240
00:11:55.759 --> 00:11:57.860
Yeah, that's the thing. I mean, you have to embrace
241
00:11:58.059 --> 00:12:01.690
the stuff that's happening right now. You can't just say, oh, yeah, well, no,
242
00:12:02.350 --> 00:12:04.730
you do have to embrace it. So that is a
243
00:12:04.769 --> 00:12:09.710
big piece of it. But, you know, I think that.
244
00:12:10.149 --> 00:12:14.000
I mean, even the warning label it gives you that, hey,
245
00:12:14.409 --> 00:12:17.659
we can be wrong, right? Or I can be wrong.
246
00:12:18.639 --> 00:12:20.679
It's not a person. But the way it says it
247
00:12:20.740 --> 00:12:23.460
is that, yeah, you got to check everything. So, I mean,
248
00:12:23.519 --> 00:12:25.720
maybe it isn't the right thing for word choices. Maybe
249
00:12:25.740 --> 00:12:27.799
it has to be your own word choice. Like we
250
00:12:27.840 --> 00:12:31.240
can't become so reliant on AI that we can't do stuff,
251
00:12:31.360 --> 00:12:31.700
you know?
252
00:12:31.960 --> 00:12:34.000
And maybe this is a step in the right direction
253
00:12:34.059 --> 00:12:36.820
of saying, hey, we can't be doing everything like this because,
254
00:12:37.480 --> 00:12:39.519
I mean, I saw another statistic today that was like,
255
00:12:40.169 --> 00:12:44.909
the workforce is now 19 or like out of CEOs worldwide,
256
00:12:44.909 --> 00:12:47.259
19% of them are women, which is like the highest
257
00:12:47.279 --> 00:12:49.820
this has ever been, right? This percentage, but that is
258
00:12:50.019 --> 00:12:53.139
still not okay. I mean, if you look at my
259
00:12:53.179 --> 00:12:56.730
law school class, 70% of us are women, but only
260
00:12:56.730 --> 00:12:59.509
19% of CEOs worldwide are women.
261
00:13:00.629 --> 00:13:03.450
Yeah. If you look at medical school too, I think
262
00:13:03.470 --> 00:13:06.309
there's a greater number. I don't know that you can
263
00:13:06.330 --> 00:13:07.879
look it up real quick as we talk, But I
264
00:13:07.919 --> 00:13:10.879
think there's a greater number of a percentage of women
265
00:13:11.539 --> 00:13:18.620
in medical school classes now versus men. But does that
266
00:13:18.700 --> 00:13:19.820
come out in the marketplace?
267
00:13:20.120 --> 00:13:23.759
According to the Association of American Medical Colleges, women make
268
00:13:23.860 --> 00:13:28.700
up roughly 57 percent of applicants and 55 percent of
269
00:13:28.779 --> 00:13:31.840
matriculants in the recent academic cycles. And this is.
270
00:13:32.210 --> 00:13:37.009
Yeah. So when you look at who are running the programs.
271
00:13:37.840 --> 00:13:38.039
Men.
272
00:13:39.000 --> 00:13:41.759
Very few women. I mean, we have the surgery in
273
00:13:41.799 --> 00:13:42.860
Gainesville has a woman.
274
00:13:43.200 --> 00:13:46.840
That's amazing. And she's probably like out of all neurosurgeons worldwide.
275
00:13:46.860 --> 00:13:51.179
There's probably like maybe 150 of them. I don't know.
276
00:13:51.200 --> 00:13:53.340
Search that too. Cause that's an interesting statistic.
277
00:13:53.840 --> 00:13:56.500
I mean, we have our first like female Dean and
278
00:13:56.519 --> 00:13:59.570
we are relatively new law school. I'm not going to
279
00:13:59.610 --> 00:14:01.529
harp on like, that's a bad thing, but this is,
280
00:14:02.509 --> 00:14:04.330
and part of me is like, I'm so excited that
281
00:14:04.470 --> 00:14:06.230
we have a female Dean and, But a lot of
282
00:14:06.250 --> 00:14:08.870
her appointment has been around, wow, Belmont's first female Dean.
283
00:14:08.909 --> 00:14:12.240
What about like, you know, Belmont's Dean is amazing in
284
00:14:12.320 --> 00:14:14.519
all of the capacities, regardless of her being a woman.
285
00:14:14.620 --> 00:14:15.299
Cause she is.
286
00:14:15.639 --> 00:14:16.700
Drives me.
287
00:14:16.720 --> 00:14:21.419
And it's, it's great. But like we, it's not a
288
00:14:21.460 --> 00:14:23.940
celebration anymore to be the first women to do this.
289
00:14:25.470 --> 00:14:27.259
Not like, I don't want to be like rude about it,
290
00:14:27.309 --> 00:14:29.289
but we should be striving for more than that. Like
291
00:14:29.370 --> 00:14:31.730
our description should be more than the first female to
292
00:14:31.750 --> 00:14:32.070
do this.
293
00:14:32.710 --> 00:14:37.049
Right. It should be like, she's an amazing Dean. Not that,
294
00:14:37.570 --> 00:14:41.990
you know, she's the first woman. Okay, great. Yes. And yes.
295
00:14:42.129 --> 00:14:44.399
And that's, that's the important way to say that. Yes.
296
00:14:44.480 --> 00:14:47.700
But what else has she done? Yeah. She's done amazing things.
297
00:14:47.740 --> 00:14:51.419
She's a woman. So that there, therefore you're actually taking
298
00:14:51.460 --> 00:14:54.250
her down a level for any kind of like, okay,
299
00:14:54.450 --> 00:14:56.429
other Deans in the past. Well, they're all men. We
300
00:14:56.450 --> 00:14:58.750
can't look at that. You know, it's ridiculous.
301
00:14:59.149 --> 00:15:03.809
Right. And it's, I mean, it is purely insulting. And
302
00:15:03.830 --> 00:15:05.850
I think like a lot of listeners would relate to
303
00:15:05.889 --> 00:15:08.809
this as, you know, whether you describe yourself as just
304
00:15:08.870 --> 00:15:10.809
a mother or other people in your life describe you
305
00:15:10.870 --> 00:15:13.120
as just a mother. You're so much more than that.
306
00:15:13.340 --> 00:15:16.419
And your role is still important. Yes. And. Yeah.
307
00:15:16.620 --> 00:15:20.779
So, I mean, just because you are the first female something,
308
00:15:20.799 --> 00:15:24.659
you know, you're still doing an amazing job compared to
309
00:15:24.740 --> 00:15:27.460
everybody else out there. Like, it's so ridiculous how.
310
00:15:28.259 --> 00:15:29.799
Like you're the dean of a law school.
311
00:15:29.820 --> 00:15:30.679
The first female.
312
00:15:31.159 --> 00:15:33.059
Regardless if you're the first female or not. That's a
313
00:15:33.139 --> 00:15:36.470
huge accomplishment. Yeah. Anyways, I've been on a high horse
314
00:15:36.519 --> 00:15:39.029
about women's rights the last couple of weeks. And it's
315
00:15:39.070 --> 00:15:40.850
a high horse that I deserve to sit on because
316
00:15:42.549 --> 00:15:46.470
it's insane to me that my grandma was fighting the
317
00:15:46.509 --> 00:15:48.730
same fight that you were fighting. And it's the same
318
00:15:48.789 --> 00:15:54.809
fight that I'm still fighting for a seat at the table. Yeah.
319
00:15:54.850 --> 00:15:55.710
Is that going to get better?
320
00:15:55.730 --> 00:15:56.370
Right. I don't know.
321
00:15:56.669 --> 00:15:57.230
I don't know.
322
00:15:57.990 --> 00:16:01.000
But we just got to keep doing it. Right. We do.
323
00:16:01.029 --> 00:16:03.500
And it's obviously like, I'm not going to not fight
324
00:16:03.720 --> 00:16:05.600
for it. It's something that I will have to do
325
00:16:05.720 --> 00:16:08.940
for the rest of my life. And I'm happy that
326
00:16:09.059 --> 00:16:11.740
I have the means and the opportunities to do so,
327
00:16:11.820 --> 00:16:13.059
but it does get exhausting.
328
00:16:13.440 --> 00:16:16.120
Yeah. It's such an interesting thing to think about that.
329
00:16:17.090 --> 00:16:21.610
You're right. That we, yes, certain things have changed, but
330
00:16:21.750 --> 00:16:25.830
so many things have not. Right. In a good way.
331
00:16:26.309 --> 00:16:28.889
You know, it has changed since grandma's time. There's more
332
00:16:28.929 --> 00:16:31.269
women in the classroom. There's more than 50% of women
333
00:16:31.309 --> 00:16:33.529
in med school, right? In her time, it was like
334
00:16:33.649 --> 00:16:35.379
maybe one, maybe.
335
00:16:36.460 --> 00:16:39.940
But the big accomplishment is the first female, right?
336
00:16:39.960 --> 00:16:40.100
Yeah.
337
00:16:40.840 --> 00:16:43.399
Where it should be normalized that it doesn't matter if
338
00:16:43.419 --> 00:16:44.820
you're a man or a woman that you're doing an
339
00:16:44.840 --> 00:16:45.399
amazing job.
340
00:16:46.000 --> 00:16:46.899
Yeah, I don't.
341
00:16:47.700 --> 00:16:50.759
That's my two cents. Okay, tell me what your calendar
342
00:16:50.799 --> 00:16:51.259
says today.
343
00:16:52.820 --> 00:16:56.070
No one can seriously fuck up your life quite as magnificently.
344
00:16:56.629 --> 00:17:00.350
As you can. Yeah. You have the power there.
345
00:17:00.789 --> 00:17:03.470
You have the power. With everything you do, you have
346
00:17:03.509 --> 00:17:03.889
the power.
347
00:17:05.410 --> 00:17:08.009
And so if that means you think that your tone
348
00:17:08.049 --> 00:17:12.950
in AI is decreasing your confidence or other people's perception
349
00:17:12.970 --> 00:17:14.960
of your confidence in the workplace, stop using it.
350
00:17:16.789 --> 00:17:20.269
Yeah. I mean, again, we shouldn't use it to run
351
00:17:20.390 --> 00:17:22.450
all of the things in our lives. Yes, we need
352
00:17:22.470 --> 00:17:24.549
to know how to do these things, right? Yeah.
353
00:17:24.589 --> 00:17:25.150
It's like, you know.
354
00:17:25.750 --> 00:17:27.990
If you're not jumping on, you're behind. Right.
355
00:17:28.470 --> 00:17:28.950
Exactly.
356
00:17:29.289 --> 00:17:33.059
But you still need to think like a human, right?
357
00:17:33.079 --> 00:17:34.680
I mean, it's crucial.
358
00:17:34.940 --> 00:17:37.059
So there we go.
359
00:17:37.880 --> 00:17:40.339
Well, thank you for listening to this. And thank you
360
00:17:40.359 --> 00:17:41.579
for being engaged with me, Mom.
361
00:17:42.140 --> 00:17:42.640
Yeah.
362
00:17:42.759 --> 00:17:44.769
I'm probably going to go talk to my friends about
363
00:17:44.789 --> 00:17:48.650
this for hours afterwards because I think it's so inherently fascinating.
364
00:17:50.109 --> 00:17:52.509
And thank you for joining us on this week's episode
365
00:17:52.589 --> 00:17:56.980
of Her Unshakable Confidence. Always remember you are unshakable.
366
00:17:57.799 --> 00:17:58.400
Bye guys.
367
00:18:00.619 --> 00:18:03.180
Thank you for listening to Her Unshakable Confidence.
368
00:18:04.009 --> 00:18:07.690

370
00:18:10.450 --> 00:18:11.569
Keep trusting yourself.
371
00:18:12.230 --> 00:18:13.630
You are stronger than you think.
372
00:18:14.049 --> 00:18:15.670
You are unshakable.
373
00:18:16.630 --> 00:18:17.339
See you next week.
