Where Mexican Fast Food Meets Time Travel Theories

WEBVTT
00:00:28.561 --> 00:00:29.503
Welcome to Help Yourself.
00:00:29.503 --> 00:00:32.388
Food and Philosophy with Brian and Nick.
00:00:32.388 --> 00:00:34.353
I'm Nick and I'm Brian.
00:00:34.353 --> 00:00:44.968
You know I talk a lot about Dory's cooking and how good it is, and it's so good that she's turned me into a time traveler, because I always go back four seconds.
00:00:46.331 --> 00:00:46.911
What's your name, brian?
00:00:46.911 --> 00:00:49.323
Four seconds, four seconds.
00:00:49.323 --> 00:00:52.846
Four seconds For seconds.
00:00:52.846 --> 00:00:57.087
Four seconds, yes, for seconds.
00:00:57.087 --> 00:01:01.807
All right, what am I eating?
00:01:01.807 --> 00:01:08.507
Oh, so a little while ago, you were talking about Taco Bell, which I never go to, and we had a little conversation about that.
00:01:08.507 --> 00:01:12.045
I never go to Taco Bell, and so you inspired me.
00:01:12.045 --> 00:01:14.310
I did Thank you, except when you do.
00:01:15.219 --> 00:01:17.186
Kind of like I never eat French fries, except when I do.
00:01:18.019 --> 00:01:20.409
Thank you for the inspiration to go to Taco Bell.
00:01:20.409 --> 00:01:21.444
I really appreciate it.
00:01:21.444 --> 00:01:22.814
It's a dark inspiration.
00:01:22.814 --> 00:01:24.786
So what did you get from Taco Bell?
00:01:24.786 --> 00:01:31.022
I got a like it's a grilled cheese steak burrito, so it was like a.
00:01:31.022 --> 00:01:34.586
Yeah, I was listening to a podcast recently.
00:01:34.899 --> 00:01:38.606
This is going to take us off track immediately, but I was listening to a podcast recently.
00:01:38.606 --> 00:01:40.406
They were talking about Taco Bell.
00:01:40.406 --> 00:01:47.446
They were actually reviewing a different taco fast food taco chain called Del Taco, which if you're in certain areas of the country, you'll know what that is.
00:01:47.446 --> 00:01:50.869
If you're not, you know, in the South we don't have really, we don't really have Del Taco here.
00:01:50.869 --> 00:02:00.125
It's more of like a West Coast kind of thing, and we used to have some there were a couple, but they all went away and they.
00:02:00.146 --> 00:02:13.064
So they were talking about that and the one person their guest, made a comment and said that at Del Taco it's just hey, this is a burrito, this is a taco, and they might use different meat and different.
00:02:13.064 --> 00:02:26.326
You know iterations of that where they're basically like this is this kind of taco, and this one has instead of cheddar cheese, it has pepper jack cheese or it's instead of pork, it has beef or whatever, right.
00:02:26.326 --> 00:02:33.361
And so it felt like you're going to a fast food taco restaurant or fast food Mexican restaurant because you're just getting.
00:02:33.361 --> 00:02:35.408
They'd just call it those names.
00:02:35.408 --> 00:02:40.752
But then they said but Taco Bell is its own thing, because they have things like that.
00:02:40.752 --> 00:02:41.281
What?
00:02:41.281 --> 00:02:47.092
When they're like, yeah, this is the crunchy bell beef or nacho.
00:02:47.240 --> 00:02:49.329
You know, yeah, supreme, you know whatever.
00:02:49.329 --> 00:02:55.651
And you're like, okay, that's just a made up food that you just made up like a Crunchwrap Supreme.
00:02:55.651 --> 00:03:00.281
You wouldn't even know what that was, unless you were like excuse me, what is the Crunchwrap Supreme?
00:03:00.281 --> 00:03:09.335
Because it's not a thing Like you know what a burrito is and you know what a taco is, but a Crunchwrap Supreme is a thing that a Taco Bell chef just made up and said we can do this thing.
00:03:09.335 --> 00:03:10.699
Well, whatever.
00:03:12.245 --> 00:03:13.609
You're overstating it there.
00:03:13.609 --> 00:03:27.197
I'm saying, for a corporate thing they have like food marketer, they have food inventors, whatever, and so anyway, so like that is a grilled cheese steak burrito, which.
00:03:27.197 --> 00:03:33.424
All those words make sense, but the only time you're ever going to utter all those in one sentence is when you're ordering a Taco Bell.
00:03:33.424 --> 00:03:37.449
You're not going to have any other sentence that uses all those in that same order.
00:03:38.400 --> 00:03:40.906
It's like yeah, I'd like a quesadillo what?
00:03:40.906 --> 00:03:41.748
Yes.
00:03:41.748 --> 00:03:46.929
Yeah, is it quesadillo and a burrito and a baby?
00:03:46.929 --> 00:03:47.149
Yeah.
00:03:48.219 --> 00:04:01.125
I went to a restaurant last night that my son got soft pretzels and it came with beer cheese queso and I was like you know so queso in Spanish means cheese, so I'm like so beer cheese cheese.
00:04:01.125 --> 00:04:05.605
And then when it came out it was it was beer cheese.
00:04:05.605 --> 00:04:10.885
So there's queso dip and there's beer cheese and they're saying, oh, this is queso made with beer cheese.
00:04:10.885 --> 00:04:14.889
So it had like jalapenos in it and it had, like you know, like a queso dip wood.
00:04:14.889 --> 00:04:16.002
But it was so.
00:04:16.002 --> 00:04:18.127
It's that kind of thing where they just made something up.
00:04:18.127 --> 00:04:22.384
I don't really care if they make it up, it tastes really really good.
00:04:22.384 --> 00:04:24.847
I mean it's cheese.
00:04:24.847 --> 00:04:35.567
I mean obviously not not the ideal thing to eat, but that's what I probably have been to Taco Bell like in the last two years.
00:04:35.567 --> 00:04:37.391
I've probably been 10 times.
00:04:37.391 --> 00:04:54.940
You know it's not, you know I don't go there all the time, but but thanks to your positive and influence in my life, I drag you down with me brother, Exactly no, so I got that it was.
00:04:55.120 --> 00:04:55.983
It was actually really good.
00:04:55.983 --> 00:05:03.031
I typically stay away from ground meat options at Taco Bell.
00:05:03.031 --> 00:05:04.983
I just for some reason.
00:05:05.082 --> 00:05:14.992
I, yeah, I typically will go with a chicken or a steak variation, even though I'm sure if you saw the chicken or the steak, it's probably not the most high quality.
00:05:14.992 --> 00:05:22.584
You know, it's not like you're getting filet mignon in your taco at, you know, or wagyu beef or something like that.
00:05:22.584 --> 00:05:29.701
But I find it a little bit more agreeable than you know could like that, and also consistency wise.
00:05:29.701 --> 00:05:36.627
It's not just like the ground meat is part of like just big conglomeration of everything, it's just it has different texture to it.
00:05:36.627 --> 00:05:39.526
So so, yeah, so that's what I got.
00:05:39.526 --> 00:05:42.733
It was good, it was actually very filling too.
00:05:42.733 --> 00:05:48.624
But I will say that the price of Taco Bell from you know, okay, here here comes my old man rant.
00:05:48.624 --> 00:06:02.235
Back when I was a kid, you could go to Taco Bell and eat for like $4, you know you're like, yeah, I want three tacos and a drink, and you know, and it was $4 and 75 cents or whatever you know.
00:06:02.995 --> 00:06:03.237
Yeah.
00:06:03.237 --> 00:06:16.909
I still remember the commercial that it was like 59, 79, 99 and 59 cents would get you either a plain, crunchy taco meat crunchy or soft taco.
00:06:16.909 --> 00:06:20.687
The 79 would get you the supreme with the plain meat.
00:06:20.687 --> 00:06:21.329
Yeah.
00:06:21.329 --> 00:06:27.423
And then the 99 would get you, I guess, a supreme with one of the quote premium meats, the chicken or the steak you were talking about.
00:06:27.423 --> 00:06:28.045
Right.
00:06:28.045 --> 00:06:32.728
Right, and it was like yeah, like you said you could eat, get full for four bucks.
00:06:32.988 --> 00:06:35.586
Yeah, and now you can still do that.
00:06:35.586 --> 00:06:37.750
They have still the dollar menu.
00:06:37.750 --> 00:06:39.276
Like the dollar, I think it's still.
00:06:39.276 --> 00:06:41.266
I think it's still a dollar, like for certain items.
00:06:41.487 --> 00:06:44.459
Right, it's pretty limited, it's like all the potatoes?
00:06:44.661 --> 00:06:45.022
Well, they have one.
00:06:45.022 --> 00:06:50.449
They have a cheesy roll up too, like a cheesy roll up on there, which is literally just a tortilla with some cheese in it and they melt it right.
00:06:50.449 --> 00:06:52.204
So a rolled up quesadilla.
00:06:52.204 --> 00:06:56.945
So if you really I mean theoretically you can get by on the cheese, that's generous too.
00:06:56.945 --> 00:06:59.771
Yeah, well, you can get by on the cheese.
00:06:59.771 --> 00:07:00.392
No peanut cheese.
00:07:00.860 --> 00:07:33.749
But what I'm saying is, if you order any of the things like that, like a Crunchwrap Supreme or a, you know Supreme adds like a dollar immediately for anything, and then any of the specials, like, if you go up and they're like hey, we're featuring a, you know like this, the grilled cheese steak burrito, you know that's going to be like probably about the same as it'll cost you to get like a part of a meal at a sit-down Mexican restaurant, and it's going to be like five or six or seven bucks, you know, for a burrito.
00:07:33.749 --> 00:07:38.427
And so so what did you get?
00:07:39.480 --> 00:07:47.264
Well, I got a yeah, so I got a a grilled cheese steak burrito.
00:07:49.019 --> 00:07:49.284
Got it.
00:07:49.846 --> 00:07:52.314
So it was and it was good.
00:07:52.314 --> 00:07:57.885
It had obviously steak in it, but it also had like I don't know, it had like chips in it.
00:07:57.885 --> 00:08:02.514
It had like chips in it, like different kinds of like corn chips inside the burrito and stuff like that.
00:08:02.514 --> 00:08:03.016
So it was.
00:08:03.055 --> 00:08:03.415
Burritos?
00:08:03.415 --> 00:08:06.449
Yeah, no, not those like the.
00:08:06.449 --> 00:08:14.834
You know, the chips that you get that are like the red, that are like red and white and like the different colored chips, like corn tortilla chips, like that.
00:08:14.834 --> 00:08:19.488
Yeah, it looks, yeah, yeah, and so I was good.
00:08:19.488 --> 00:08:22.213
Like I said, it was good, but it was just, it's just like.
00:08:22.213 --> 00:08:25.666
Sometimes you're like, do I want to?
00:08:25.666 --> 00:08:29.707
Many times it's just I'm in a hurry, like it's like, okay, I just want to.
00:08:29.707 --> 00:08:53.359
I need to get something like and potentially eat this in my car on the way to the next thing I'm doing, because time, you know, time is finite and it moves in a straight line and it's linear and no, anyway, okay, I'm going to do a brief BBC Brian's beverage corner.
00:08:53.359 --> 00:08:56.393
I've got hydration is important.
00:08:57.425 --> 00:09:14.374
I've got water and I've got this, okay, so this is I feel like I feel like the energy drink game is turning into a much younger man's game than I'm like maybe I should not be in that game anymore.
00:09:14.374 --> 00:09:21.719
So this, this energy, this energy drink, is called Bucked Up and it has like a.
00:09:21.719 --> 00:09:28.736
It has a, you know, a picture of a deer on the can.
00:09:28.736 --> 00:09:34.794
It's an all black can picture of a deer with antlers and probably pretty good deer to shoot if you're hunting.
00:09:34.794 --> 00:09:35.975
It's got a lot of points on it.
00:09:36.057 --> 00:09:40.150
So yeah, it's got an angry sort of yeah, demonic.
00:09:41.465 --> 00:09:42.688
And then the flavor is yeah.
00:09:42.688 --> 00:09:44.966
And then the flavor.
00:09:44.966 --> 00:09:45.889
Now it's zero sugar.
00:09:45.889 --> 00:09:56.648
Flavor is blood razz, so I guess that means raspberry right, which it does taste like that, but it has a bunch of.
00:09:56.648 --> 00:10:03.734
It's got like 300 milligrams of caffeine in it, so I don't even know if I'm going to drink this whole thing, but it's zero calories.
00:10:03.734 --> 00:10:16.697
It's got 8,333% of my B12 allowance for the day, so I'm covered for the B12 for a while.
00:10:16.697 --> 00:10:19.051
And B12 is good.
00:10:19.051 --> 00:10:20.575
No, it is, it's yeah.
00:10:21.626 --> 00:10:23.273
I'd be up all night playing video games.
00:10:23.424 --> 00:10:32.397
The B, the B vitamins are like used in almost everything that you do, like they're just, you know, like literally it's you need to have a lot of it, right?
00:10:32.397 --> 00:10:41.636
So, okay, so I had that, I have the water and that's it for my BBC.
00:10:41.636 --> 00:10:54.197
So if I start talking faster, like if time seems to speed up during this episode, it's because of the blood razz and me getting bucked up about it.
00:10:54.197 --> 00:10:56.682
So, yeah, what about you?
00:10:56.682 --> 00:10:58.004
What are you eating?
00:11:01.270 --> 00:11:06.120
Because this is sort of a snack episode, you know, being a shorter episode smaller episode.
00:11:06.120 --> 00:11:07.389
I'm bonus here.
00:11:07.389 --> 00:11:08.769
I've got a snack.
00:11:08.769 --> 00:11:11.871
I have a Sargento.
00:11:11.871 --> 00:11:13.075
I think is how you pronounce that.
00:11:13.075 --> 00:11:17.205
Yeah, it is Sargento, maybe Balanced Breaks and it's the.
00:11:17.566 --> 00:11:19.951
Oh, is that the little thing with the compartments on it?
00:11:21.075 --> 00:11:23.321
Yeah, it's so cute.
00:11:23.321 --> 00:11:24.323
It's so cute, it's so cute, nick.
00:11:25.868 --> 00:11:28.395
It's funny fits in the palm of your hand.
00:11:28.395 --> 00:11:28.785
You could.
00:11:28.785 --> 00:11:33.529
It's about the size of a puck In terms of diameter.
00:11:33.971 --> 00:11:36.591
Yeah, what was the varietal?
00:11:37.969 --> 00:11:52.259
It's the varietal, not wine, marmoray Jack, dried cranberries, dark chocolate and banana chips.
00:11:52.745 --> 00:11:55.008
Next time you go to the market, it's the grocer.
00:11:55.008 --> 00:11:58.552
What other varietals do you have of the Sargento?
00:12:01.028 --> 00:12:03.514
Yes, what varietals of Mountain Dew do you offer?
00:12:03.514 --> 00:12:08.064
Oh, you have the hard Mountain Dew knife.
00:12:08.184 --> 00:12:09.610
Oh man, that is excellent.
00:12:09.610 --> 00:12:10.251
Thank you, sir.
00:12:11.708 --> 00:12:13.294
I'm looking for the softer drinks.
00:12:13.294 --> 00:12:13.998
Do you mean softer drinks?
00:12:13.998 --> 00:12:17.344
Just see what.
00:12:17.344 --> 00:12:25.399
I've got some notes ofalso got some salted cashews to supplement that.
00:12:25.399 --> 00:12:26.027
Oh yeah.
00:12:26.027 --> 00:12:29.652
My classic glass water bottle.
00:12:30.024 --> 00:12:34.956
Your rusty trusty, the rusty trusty, no, so I'm calling it from now on Rusty trusty.
00:12:35.644 --> 00:12:39.495
We learned the other time that that's not what it's to be called.
00:12:39.495 --> 00:12:40.667
If it's rusty trusty.
00:12:40.667 --> 00:12:43.713
It needs to be washedy and toasty.
00:12:47.750 --> 00:12:50.736
Wow, I wish we could travel in time back to the beginning of this episode to start over.
00:12:53.629 --> 00:13:01.568
I mean, if I could turn back time, I would find a way to start this episode over and prevent you from what you're about to say.
00:13:01.568 --> 00:13:09.351
I also have some coffee, just decaf espresso sweet cream.
00:13:09.592 --> 00:13:10.033
Coffee.
00:13:11.054 --> 00:13:13.820
Okay, standard, classic Standard classic.
00:13:13.820 --> 00:13:15.910
Actually sleep at night, yeah.
00:13:16.351 --> 00:13:17.195
Mm-hmm.
00:13:17.195 --> 00:13:22.456
At this redactedI mean on this redacted day, at this redacted time.
00:13:22.456 --> 00:13:26.764
I don't know if our friend still listens to the podcast.
00:13:26.764 --> 00:13:28.530
Does our friend still listen to the podcast?
00:13:29.284 --> 00:13:32.691
The Marshall couch yeah.
00:13:33.264 --> 00:13:35.351
He is the OG of friends to this podcast.
00:13:35.893 --> 00:13:38.169
Anyway, yeah, he hasn't harassed me in a while, so probably not.
00:13:38.169 --> 00:13:38.650
We'll see.
00:13:38.650 --> 00:13:39.373
I'll ask him.
00:13:41.006 --> 00:13:43.111
I don't blame him, you know, for not harassing me.
00:13:43.111 --> 00:13:44.215
No, for not listening.
00:13:44.215 --> 00:13:44.895
I don't blame him.
00:13:44.895 --> 00:13:49.474
All right yeah.
00:13:49.474 --> 00:14:02.254
So that's ourthis is our bonus episode, if you haven't noticed, three Thursdays in February and it will be time bound.
00:14:02.254 --> 00:14:04.168
And it will be time bound.
00:14:05.105 --> 00:14:07.990
Yeah, but actually this will.
00:14:07.990 --> 00:14:10.573
Yeah, this is a leap year.
00:14:11.314 --> 00:14:13.197
It is, so I think that's true.
00:14:13.398 --> 00:14:21.378
Yeah, so that was part of the inspiration for the bonus episode, right Was like hey Time travel.
00:14:21.378 --> 00:14:23.128
Yeah, this is time.
00:14:23.128 --> 00:14:24.913
This is a weird moment in time.
00:14:24.913 --> 00:14:27.793
Well, not just this episode, but this whole series.
00:14:27.793 --> 00:14:35.152
Right, it's like this leap year and weirdness with days and dates and Well, on this particular episode coming out on that day.
00:14:35.373 --> 00:14:37.850
it just happened to line up, so it's perfect.
00:14:37.850 --> 00:14:41.813
How often do you get a podcast that comes out on the 29th of February?
00:14:42.986 --> 00:14:45.932
You say perfect, and I can say this because I think it was my idea.
00:14:45.932 --> 00:14:47.309
I say it's adequate.
00:14:47.309 --> 00:14:50.490
I think it's an adequate excuse to talk about time.
00:14:50.490 --> 00:14:53.495
Sure, well, you're very kind, brian.
00:14:53.495 --> 00:14:53.836
Thank you.
00:14:54.865 --> 00:14:55.165
And time travel.
00:14:55.165 --> 00:14:56.952
It sort of goes into this.
00:14:56.952 --> 00:14:59.442
Is that wesoand also?
00:14:59.442 --> 00:15:06.807
That's another thing I want to know is do we add that one day every four years because of just our time is not exact, like it, doesn't?
00:15:06.807 --> 00:15:11.614
We got to keep it on track with the calendar, like it'sthere's time drift with the calendar Is that why we do that.
00:15:11.614 --> 00:15:18.570
It's notit's not exactly 24 hours in a day, or Right, and so, like every four years, we have to like, add a date.
00:15:18.570 --> 00:15:19.552
It's like 24.25.
00:15:19.552 --> 00:15:20.453
Yeah.
00:15:20.814 --> 00:15:21.076
Yeah.
00:15:22.687 --> 00:15:24.712
To make it all line up again, that's not perfect.
00:15:24.712 --> 00:15:25.615
Sure.
00:15:26.064 --> 00:15:27.851
Like it'sthere's still a rounding error.
00:15:28.264 --> 00:15:33.984
So what you're saying is we don't know what the actual date is, ever because since?
00:15:33.984 --> 00:15:36.030
Well, we do, because we .2024 years have passed.
00:15:36.030 --> 00:15:46.731
We all collectively hallucinate it to be the same thing We've been doing, leap yearhas leap year happened since the Gregorian calendar began, or did we like at some point go aw crap.
00:15:46.731 --> 00:15:48.490
This is all messed up.
00:15:48.490 --> 00:15:50.993
This is notwe're like four months off, people.
00:15:50.993 --> 00:15:52.850
We got to figure something out.
00:15:54.245 --> 00:15:55.571
This is how much I care, Brian.
00:15:55.571 --> 00:15:57.588
I can't be bothered to Google it.
00:16:00.897 --> 00:16:01.158
All right.
00:16:01.158 --> 00:16:02.024
Well, I care less.
00:16:02.024 --> 00:16:07.557
I and our listeners are just going to have to not know that fact Actually.
00:16:08.047 --> 00:16:10.785
Because only I speak to the computer I'm like.
00:16:10.785 --> 00:16:12.269
So when are we ever at Galaxy Quest?
00:16:12.269 --> 00:16:13.273
Okay?
00:16:17.009 --> 00:16:20.845
So the question that we had is Time travel.
00:16:20.845 --> 00:16:25.094
Talking about time travel and really honestly, whether that's even possible.
00:16:25.094 --> 00:16:30.376
We already talked about in the last couple of episodes about, theyou know, our perception of time.
00:16:30.376 --> 00:16:48.850
So psychological aspects of time, biological aspects of time and then also the philosophy, sort of philosophy of time and how that has been studied over the years, and so we thought, as a fun topic, you know, for a sort of shorter episode and everything else is talking about time travel.
00:16:48.850 --> 00:16:50.249
It'stime travel is.
00:16:50.249 --> 00:17:05.296
So you can tell when we as humans are fascinated by something, when time travel is depicted in our art and our other creative aspects, and especially in movies, movies and books and things like that, that creative aspect.
00:17:05.296 --> 00:17:12.167
It's been a topic that has been explored Like fictional.
00:17:12.167 --> 00:17:19.110
You know, fictional works have explored that topic and some more realistic than others, some have fun with it and it's more comedy.
00:17:19.130 --> 00:17:29.253
But you talking about it, depicted in art like that in commentary, kind of a callback to our previous episodes and some of Dory's own art.
00:17:29.885 --> 00:17:31.849
One piece that she's particularly proud of is.
00:17:31.849 --> 00:17:35.956
It depicts time like an arrow and circular.
00:17:35.956 --> 00:18:05.745
At the noon there's like it's like a clock, and at the noon hour there's a human shooting a bow and arrow and the arrow is traveling around like a clock and circular and at each hour, roughly each hour, there's a different species of animal and the order in which they were extinct and the arrow is coming back to hit the human in the back, sort of like where the bringers were.
00:18:06.407 --> 00:18:08.153
Where the next to go extinct yeah.
00:18:08.925 --> 00:18:14.628
If we keep bringing animals extinct, we're going to bring ourselves to extinction Right Only a matter of time.
00:18:14.628 --> 00:18:15.411
Yeah.
00:18:15.411 --> 00:18:17.652
It's a great visual metaphor.
00:18:17.652 --> 00:18:20.304
She should be proud of it, yeah.
00:18:21.375 --> 00:18:22.325
That's interesting yeah.
00:18:22.325 --> 00:18:25.349
Well, so.
00:18:26.370 --> 00:18:45.345
I think, and that goes back to like what the you know different theories, the linear versus cyclical or circular time, you know frames, things like that, but the question so anyway, in our fictional that's what I'm saying like in our fictional works and works of art and other things like that, we have lots of movies that deal with time.
00:18:45.345 --> 00:18:55.345
I think you were, you had mentioned which I didn't even realize it was time travel per se, or perception of time, was planted in the apes.
00:18:55.345 --> 00:19:01.477
You were talking about that and it's not necessarily time travel, but it talks about your relativity.
00:19:02.946 --> 00:19:05.432
Every story is a time travel story.
00:19:05.432 --> 00:19:07.196
It's just in the same direction.
00:19:07.196 --> 00:19:09.160
It's like time travel.
00:19:09.160 --> 00:19:25.117
All of us are traveling in time, right, it's just always in the drive gear and there's no reverse gear and we're going at the same speed, except with general relativity, where we talk about sci-fi and they go faster than the speed limit.
00:19:25.458 --> 00:19:45.341
you know faster than light, and so they travel faster through time, but there's no reverse, and so the interesting thing is that's one of the things that I read was reading about, because when you break down time travel, the question is okay, if you're going to travel in time, is it possible, first of all, to travel in time?
00:19:45.341 --> 00:19:51.617
Second of all, is it possible to travel forward or backwards or both in time?
00:19:51.617 --> 00:20:00.417
And so people have done studies on all of those, or at least have I don't want to say studies, but they've researched and tried to come up with.
00:20:00.417 --> 00:20:05.704
Is it plausible that we might be able to find a way to travel?
00:20:05.704 --> 00:20:08.530
So each one of those things is a different question.
00:20:08.530 --> 00:20:11.877
One of the big things that they brought up in some of these articles is Dr who.
00:20:11.877 --> 00:20:20.617
Like Dr who's been going on forever and that whole thing is based on.
00:20:20.617 --> 00:20:22.499
You know, the whole series is based on time travel.
00:20:22.499 --> 00:20:29.054
Obviously, and I'm going to Dr who people out there are going to kill me because I can't remember what.
00:20:31.058 --> 00:20:33.908
TARDIS stands for no, TARDIS, like the main thing.
00:20:33.908 --> 00:20:38.118
It's like time and relative distance in space or something TARDIS, I don't know.
00:20:39.066 --> 00:20:40.950
See, and that's what I'm going to get hate mail right now.
00:20:40.950 --> 00:20:41.491
People are like.
00:20:41.692 --> 00:20:44.838
It's not that, it's not TARDIS, it's this, you know.
00:20:46.148 --> 00:20:47.071
I would welcome hate mail.
00:20:48.485 --> 00:20:51.610
Yeah, hey, if you want to email me, you can email us.
00:20:51.610 --> 00:20:52.552
Absolutely.
00:20:52.552 --> 00:20:57.320
Tell us that we're idiots, anyway, that you know.
00:20:57.320 --> 00:20:59.293
Nice to hear from someone else.
00:20:59.293 --> 00:21:02.349
Back to the future, we have that.
00:21:02.349 --> 00:21:03.591
I also have other.
00:21:03.591 --> 00:21:11.061
I'm trying to remember that there was one movie that I saw recently that was really sad and it was talking about.
00:21:11.061 --> 00:21:12.047
It was time travel.
00:21:12.047 --> 00:21:21.875
But it was literally this family and all of them had the secret power of being able to time travel, but there were certain restrictions upon that time travel.
00:21:21.875 --> 00:21:23.991
Interesting.
00:21:24.385 --> 00:21:29.433
Yeah, and one of the things that why don't we want to spoil the movie?
00:21:29.433 --> 00:21:31.877
Well, if I don't say the name of the movie, is it really a spoiler?
00:21:34.910 --> 00:21:38.313
If I just recap a plot point, I'm going to want to know, so tell me how to.
00:21:38.365 --> 00:21:40.370
So the plot point is oh, you want me to tell you after.
00:21:40.370 --> 00:21:42.255
Or should I not spoil it, or should I spoil it?
00:21:43.365 --> 00:21:46.368
Just tell us, brian, let's roll the dice.
00:21:48.706 --> 00:21:48.826
No.
00:21:48.826 --> 00:22:03.178
So the plot point is that at some point in the motion of time, the person's father who you know when he discovered that he had this ability to time travel the son had this ability to time travel the father had to like bring him in.
00:22:03.178 --> 00:22:10.871
Almost like when the father's the werewolf and the son turns into the werewolf and the father has to say like, hey, yeah, we're all werewolves, I just want to bring you in.
00:22:10.871 --> 00:22:12.255
Finally, you did your change or whatever.
00:22:12.255 --> 00:22:13.076
So you're aware of this.
00:22:14.047 --> 00:22:29.365
At some point the father passes away, and so he's using time travel to spend more time with his father, but then there becomes a restriction where he can't go back to see his father because if he does, it erases other parts of his history and or other things.
00:22:29.365 --> 00:22:34.277
And so he's faced with the choice of do I want to spend more time with my father?
00:22:34.277 --> 00:22:36.352
And I can't remember the exact plot point.
00:22:36.352 --> 00:22:41.026
It might have been like somebody that he was in love with or something like that, but it was.
00:22:41.026 --> 00:22:54.667
He's faced with like a moral thing of like, yeah, but if I go back and I spend more time with my dad, which I desperately want to do or if I don't, then I lose my father forever, but I get this other thing.
00:22:54.667 --> 00:22:57.272
So you know, it's like that type of a thing.
00:22:57.372 --> 00:23:27.141
So, anyway, interesting concept, so one of the things that I read, though, is that many of the studies say that it's highly possible and likely that you could travel into the future, but that traveling into the past, like the which a lot of time travel things we've seen would be very if not, if it's even plausible would be extremely difficult with our current knowledge.
00:23:27.385 --> 00:23:33.477
And so it's like an ordinance about an order and amount of energy, yes, or like right literally twisting the universe.
00:23:34.385 --> 00:23:34.866
That's right, I think.
00:23:34.906 --> 00:23:38.072
Einstein said if you could twist, the universe could go backwards in time.
00:23:38.072 --> 00:23:40.397
Right, oh, that's not, that's not that hard.
00:23:40.397 --> 00:23:51.598
Yeah, just take the space, the time, the fabric, the literal fabric of space time, and twist it and then travel space, shuttle to it, around it.
00:23:54.405 --> 00:24:01.473
So, yeah, so it's just like I said, interesting that like this one talks about.
00:24:01.473 --> 00:24:06.778
You know, scientists have come up with a few ways that it might be possible to travel into the past.
00:24:06.778 --> 00:24:12.150
Basically, you would.
00:24:12.150 --> 00:24:17.339
You know it would involve I'm trying to read this article at the same time, but yeah, it's exactly what you said.
00:24:17.339 --> 00:24:18.226
You read it and I talk.
00:24:18.747 --> 00:24:26.400
No, it says the idea involved, the massive long cylinder, but it says it twists space time along with it, exactly what you just said.
00:24:26.400 --> 00:24:28.043
It literally has to.
00:24:28.043 --> 00:24:33.950
You have to fold it back upon itself and I think I think actually the good place.
00:24:33.950 --> 00:24:43.141
If you've ever watched that TV show, even though that's technically about, you know theoretically the idea of heaven and hell or you know wherever you go after you die.
00:24:44.787 --> 00:24:46.850
Even they talk about how time is.
00:24:46.850 --> 00:24:56.727
I believe their concept was like Jeremy Baramy and so like, when you sign the name Jeremy Baramy, it's all these curves and stuff like that, and they're saying that's how time is.
00:24:56.727 --> 00:25:14.640
It's looping and it loops back on itself and then it goes back and then it so like if you sign it in cursive, it looks very loopy, right, and and so they're saying that's the actual concept of time, not this line that is old to new or present into future or whatever.
00:25:15.665 --> 00:25:25.680
So does the loopy imply or suggest that the present can inform the past or influence the past, or the future can influence the present?
00:25:26.365 --> 00:25:26.465
Yes.
00:25:27.829 --> 00:25:28.170
Okay.
00:25:28.451 --> 00:25:28.631
Yeah.
00:25:30.465 --> 00:25:32.472
And that's a bit brain breaking brain.
00:25:33.425 --> 00:25:41.155
Yeah, it sort of does so, like I'm trying to remember what it is.
00:25:41.155 --> 00:25:44.620
So that's why I was trying to pull up like something that basically talks about that.
00:25:45.766 --> 00:25:47.408
I mean in terms of fictional accounts.
00:25:47.408 --> 00:25:52.998
I'm fascinated by the different theories of sort of the mechanisms or what it would be like to travel back in time.
00:25:52.998 --> 00:25:55.526
So there's the.
00:25:55.526 --> 00:25:59.530
If we follow, the time flies like an arrow.
00:25:59.530 --> 00:26:00.992
Yeah analogy.
00:26:00.992 --> 00:26:10.541
There's the theory of time travel, like back to the future, where you you move back to where the arrow was in the past.
00:26:10.541 --> 00:26:11.182
Yeah.
00:26:12.146 --> 00:26:21.075
You know and and the only the arrow is otherwise unchanged is just a position and you're you know on that version of it.
00:26:21.075 --> 00:26:25.159
Then there's like, so, you're influencing your own past.
00:26:25.159 --> 00:26:32.166
But then there's others, like Avengers, where they went back in time, they went to a different timeline.
00:26:32.166 --> 00:26:39.719
So it's like they they jumped to a different arrow or, by going back, they created a new arrow right of time.
00:26:39.719 --> 00:26:40.220
Yep.
00:26:41.147 --> 00:26:46.760
And then somehow could travel back to their existing time arrow without creating yet another time arrow.
00:26:46.760 --> 00:26:50.789
Okay, which I'm pretty sure.
00:26:50.789 --> 00:27:13.907
Yeah, that now I'm thinking of another, like a YouTube short, not a YouTube short like you know, the two minute clip, but there's like a six minute video of this guy who has a time travel device and he ends up creating like 70 something different universes where he kills himself so he can experience another chance at talking to this girl in a park bench.
00:27:13.907 --> 00:27:18.214
It's darkly hilarious.
00:27:18.214 --> 00:27:25.928
It's like a literally contrived meat cute.
00:27:25.928 --> 00:27:26.690
Yeah.
00:27:27.652 --> 00:27:30.580
But where am I going all this?
00:27:30.580 --> 00:27:36.296
Well, but then there's, like other vehicles too, of do when you go back in time.
00:27:36.296 --> 00:27:41.370
You know, like in back to the future you could go back in time and potentially meet your past self.
00:27:41.370 --> 00:27:43.235
You can talk to your past self, right.
00:27:43.235 --> 00:27:43.435
Yes.
00:27:44.305 --> 00:27:48.234
There's other versions where it's your consciousness that goes back in time.
00:27:48.234 --> 00:27:49.837
Your body's still there.
00:27:49.837 --> 00:27:56.126
So when your consciousness goes in back in time, it like inhabits yourself back at that time.
00:27:56.126 --> 00:28:02.057
It's almost like you possess yourself in the past, which knows what happens to your.
00:28:02.057 --> 00:28:07.034
You know the consciousness of you back in the past.
00:28:07.034 --> 00:28:10.272
When that happens, like you raise, hijack yourself that's crazy.
00:28:10.272 --> 00:28:12.342
Yeah, we ever talked about that, or do they?
00:28:12.342 --> 00:28:15.350
Or does it get pushed back into the present?
00:28:15.350 --> 00:28:18.458
You like a body swap with yourself chronologically.
00:28:18.505 --> 00:28:32.093
Yeah, well, so the question here's maybe a question that will push us slightly in different direction, which is do you think that because, theoretically, time travel has already happened and there's people walking among us that have traveled in time?
00:28:32.093 --> 00:28:44.956
So and that's one of the paradoxes is one of the things that people ask is, if time travel is possible, then how come we don't encounter people from the future, or from the past, or from wherever?
00:28:44.956 --> 00:28:49.531
Or maybe we do Right, and that's the point, yeah.
00:28:50.213 --> 00:28:51.175
Yeah, that's why it's a paradox.
00:28:51.175 --> 00:29:02.396
There's like, well, maybe we do and just don't realize it, or it's considered like fringe woo woo science you know, in the stand up comedy realm.
00:29:03.659 --> 00:29:06.747
You know I'm like blanking on the guys.
00:29:06.747 --> 00:29:15.556
I'll have to like remember the guy's name, but he's sort of a local comedian that's famous and he does a whole bit about time travel, like him going back.
00:29:15.716 --> 00:29:15.876
Nate.
00:29:15.916 --> 00:29:27.557
Bergasse, nate Bergasse, yeah, where he's like yeah, he's like he goes back in time and he's like he's like he famously self deprecating and is like yeah, I don't have a high education and I don't know a lot of things, I'm just a guy, you know.
00:29:27.557 --> 00:29:33.867
And so he goes back and he's like, you know, people are like oh, you're from the future, huh, and he's like yeah, man, do you know that?
00:29:33.867 --> 00:29:37.752
Like there's phones that you just have in your pocket, and then they're like oh really, how do those work?
00:29:37.752 --> 00:29:44.266
And he's like I don't know, I don't know how those work, like, and he's like I think, it's like, I think it's like satellites or something.
00:29:44.266 --> 00:29:45.288
And they're like what's a satellite?
00:29:45.288 --> 00:29:47.614
He's like ah crap, ah, geez.
00:29:47.614 --> 00:29:53.286
And he's like I probably would go back into history and I'd be worse off than when I am now, because I wouldn't know.
00:29:53.306 --> 00:29:57.535
They'd be like oh, that guy's a crazy person you know he's like yeah.
00:30:01.011 --> 00:30:11.838
But yeah, there's like probably dozens of YouTube videos talking about like photographic evidence of the distant past of people using future technology or future clothes.
00:30:11.838 --> 00:30:20.366
You know present day clothes or near present day clothes in the past, yeah, and then that's whatever you know.
00:30:20.366 --> 00:30:25.427
But then I don't know if this is original to me or I heard it once and latched onto it or what.
00:30:25.427 --> 00:30:35.673
But you know the little, the little green man or the little gray man the stuff and the flying saucers and whatnot and their advanced technology.
00:30:36.174 --> 00:30:43.640
right Like what if that's just us, highly evolved millions of years into the future?
00:30:43.640 --> 00:30:53.473
Yeah, when we figure out space travel and, being the scientists and nerds and tourists that we are, go back in time to observe ourselves and understand our origins right.
00:30:54.516 --> 00:30:59.188
Right, like that would explain a fair amount.
00:30:59.188 --> 00:31:00.551
I know that I don't know.
00:31:00.551 --> 00:31:24.025
I would imagine, because of the quote, determinism of the, of astrology and what cosmological physics or whatever, like we know where things are going to be in space because of the steady rate at which we orbit around the sun the moderate at which we're flying around in the Milky Way and blah, blah, blah, whatever, whatever.
00:31:24.106 --> 00:31:39.514
So if we have advanced spacefaring technology and whatever technology to travel in time, we would know exactly what part of the universe to fly to and go back in time to, to intercept the planet, to then see it at that point in time.
00:31:39.554 --> 00:31:43.587
Yeah, you know well, so here's your.
00:31:43.587 --> 00:31:45.190
Here's the table topics for you.
00:31:46.373 --> 00:31:46.674
Uh huh.
00:31:46.934 --> 00:31:52.178
If you could travel back in time, or if you could travel in time, would you travel in time?
00:31:52.178 --> 00:31:54.366
In which direction would you go?
00:31:54.366 --> 00:31:55.648
What would you do?
00:31:55.648 --> 00:32:00.638
That's a lot of table topics, questions, but go ahead these, I think.
00:32:04.006 --> 00:32:21.074
I feel like I've answered that once before and I made it come up with a long, one or two minute way of saying I would just keep doing what I'm doing because I'm right, I don't have any regrets, I'm content with my current situation, all the stuff I've learned I've learned and now it can make my life better.
00:32:21.074 --> 00:32:28.114
Now, if I go back and fix for change anything that I will have learned that lesson, we'll just have to learn it all over again.
00:32:28.114 --> 00:32:31.908
Um, you know something along those lines?
00:32:32.970 --> 00:32:50.813
Well, yeah yeah, I think I think, if you're well so getting aside from the whole, like, oh, I'm going to go back and meet some other thing, or I'm going to go back and assassinate a you know, assassinate a person or stop an assassination from happening or whatever right.
00:32:50.813 --> 00:32:58.081
Getting aside that, even if you could just go back and observe and then come back again, wouldn't you?
00:32:58.081 --> 00:33:02.173
Wouldn't it also change the course of your future, because you've seen things?
00:33:02.173 --> 00:33:02.915
Isn't that the?
00:33:02.915 --> 00:33:07.531
Isn't that the concept of the?
00:33:08.552 --> 00:33:12.138
observer effect, the Christmas story, the oh, it's not Christmas story.
00:33:12.138 --> 00:33:13.400
What's?
00:33:13.400 --> 00:33:14.408
What's the?
00:33:14.468 --> 00:33:14.709
life.
00:33:15.111 --> 00:33:15.794
No Scrooge.
00:33:15.794 --> 00:33:17.340
There's the one with Scrooge in it.
00:33:17.340 --> 00:33:18.385
Why am I like blanking?
00:33:18.445 --> 00:33:18.666
on it.
00:33:18.707 --> 00:33:19.410
A Christmas Carol.
00:33:19.410 --> 00:33:22.826
A Christmas Carol, yeah, I said a Christmas story, but Christmas Carol.
00:33:22.826 --> 00:33:29.912
So like, yeah, he's going to go to past, future, present or past Christmas, present, christmas, future, christmas, right.
00:33:29.912 --> 00:33:34.147
And then he comes back to present time and he's a changed man, right?
00:33:34.147 --> 00:33:42.133
So wouldn't it be that same thing if you could time travel, like you go into the future and you go, oh geez, yeah, I got to do something.
00:33:42.133 --> 00:33:45.389
Or you go into the past or even the present, right.
00:33:45.951 --> 00:34:02.755
Yeah, there, that I would like, if I'm just going back, to observe and maybe get like a refresh for recollection, you know, more direct recollection of what happened.
00:34:02.755 --> 00:34:06.088
That would be very different and much more interesting to me.
00:34:06.088 --> 00:34:28.822
I don't know if it's my poor memory or my poor childhood, probably my poor memory, but I don't remember much from my childhood and a lot of advice I've been getting lately is like think back to what you love as a child and you know hypnosis man Not your chance to pursue those things like uh, you gotta go get hypnotized have you ever?
00:34:28.842 --> 00:34:29.545
been hypnotized?
00:34:29.545 --> 00:34:35.407
I have, but it was like a comedy stage thing.
00:34:35.407 --> 00:34:36.936
But have you ever?
00:34:36.957 --> 00:34:58.702
been legitimately like you're, you know, for either therapeutic reasons or for you know, because like that could be considered somewhat time travel, right, like, for instance, like you just said, I can't remember things, but I bet you, if you could get into a state of like it's in there, like the memories in there somehow, no, I don't believe it is.
00:34:58.702 --> 00:34:59.778
You don't think so.
00:34:59.798 --> 00:35:09.547
You think it's been e-jetted, I think if I didn't pay attention to it then, then I didn't record it.
00:35:10.875 --> 00:35:15.806
Yeah, but haven't you ever had like an experience where you remember something.
00:35:17.115 --> 00:35:23.646
If you have the camera on and you only film in it, there's no way to retrieve what's on the film, because there was no film.
00:35:24.277 --> 00:35:27.855
Right, but haven't you ever had the experience of like something that you're like?
00:35:27.855 --> 00:35:35.875
Oh man, I completely forgot, Like I hadn't thought about that in years, and like a thing will come up where you're like?
00:35:35.875 --> 00:35:50.488
I remember something, some obscure fact about something, some experience in your life that you didn't you like, you didn't think, you literally had not thought of it, like it just came back into your consciousness, right.
00:35:51.135 --> 00:35:56.507
Yeah, yeah, it is kind of a triggering recollection, right Like the song comes on, or a synth.
00:35:57.715 --> 00:35:59.640
So to me, hypnotizing is the same as that.
00:35:59.640 --> 00:36:03.787
Is that there's some way to access that you don't.
00:36:03.787 --> 00:36:07.862
You know, this is a completely different subject.
00:36:08.894 --> 00:36:09.436
It's alright.
00:36:09.436 --> 00:36:16.267
Maybe so the skeptic in me just knowing how impressionable we are.
00:36:16.267 --> 00:36:16.927
Yeah.
00:36:16.927 --> 00:36:19.780
And you know the power of suggestion, especially when you're under hypnosis.
00:36:19.780 --> 00:36:20.282
Yeah.
00:36:21.894 --> 00:36:35.027
That it's more likely that in your passive, suggestive state, that the psychologist is asking you leading or the hypnotist is asking you leading questions, that you fill in the blanks and come to believe through the power of suggestion.
00:36:35.027 --> 00:36:46.477
And that's how, like 700 women in the same tri-state area think they're ancestors Cleopatra, you know like, or a baroness.
00:36:46.477 --> 00:36:53.729
You know that nobody ever thinks that their ancestors were milkmaids or impoverished or anything.
00:36:53.729 --> 00:36:54.289
You know, it's all.
00:36:55.256 --> 00:37:05.144
Yeah Well but, that's also like that's spoken, spoken like someone who's only been hypnotized by a comedian on stage, Whereas no, no, and I don't know.
00:37:08.925 --> 00:37:09.855
I wasn't trying to be like insulting.
00:37:09.855 --> 00:37:18.875
What I was saying is like that, when I so my experience of it was, I was actually experiencing anxiety and trying to get over that somehow.
00:37:18.875 --> 00:37:34.568
So I was using hypnosis in a way to not necessarily recall things in the past or anything like what we're talking about right now, but just as a way to get over my own brain, like to somehow create a different circuit in my brain.
00:37:34.568 --> 00:37:38.971
But the experience is that the questions aren't asked.
00:37:38.971 --> 00:37:39.835
The questions weren't like that.
00:37:39.835 --> 00:37:48.630
The questions were like think about something as a child that you, you know, a memory or anything else that you have as a child.
00:37:48.630 --> 00:38:05.805
Or think about the elementary school you went to and think about you know, and so you're trying to mentally go through in your head, like as an example, I just I've been trying to use mine I think they're called mind castles or something like that to like remember things.
00:38:05.925 --> 00:38:08.526
Mind palaces, mind palaces yeah, that's what it is.
00:38:08.526 --> 00:38:11.622
See, I can't even remember what it's called, so I need them terribly.
00:38:11.622 --> 00:38:35.731
Yeah, so you know, but that relies upon you having a physical location that has different rooms that you can migrate in and out of and so that you have a good memory of, and so I haven't been, you know, I haven't been inside my childhood home, for, you know, years and years and years, but I still have a vivid understanding.
00:38:35.731 --> 00:38:41.835
Now I will say that, even though I haven't been in it, I've seen pictures of the inside of it since I was in it.
00:38:41.835 --> 00:38:46.385
So, like you know, so it refreshed my memory, is what I'm trying to say.
00:38:46.385 --> 00:38:55.875
So question is do I actually have a memory of it as a child or do I, do I have a memory of the pictures that I saw recently of the inside of the, you know, of the structure?
00:38:56.396 --> 00:39:01.608
So well, our and that's the other thing is our memories are very constructive right.
00:39:01.608 --> 00:39:07.646
Yes, our thumb drive of our long term memory is like 1.3 gigabytes.
00:39:07.646 --> 00:39:08.188
Yeah.
00:39:08.188 --> 00:39:11.102
We can't store video, we can only store snippets.
00:39:11.102 --> 00:39:11.664
Yeah.
00:39:11.664 --> 00:39:18.077
They're like like comic strip panels and we have to fill in the blanks to create the motion and the memory.
00:39:18.137 --> 00:39:34.572
And you know so like yeah, if you've just got this distant memory of this one vignette from that is what you have to recreate the context and what happened after that, and you're more likely to imagine things with each time you remember something.
00:39:34.572 --> 00:39:53.635
And again in a suggestive state, there's going to be times where I'm going to construct something and I'm going to remember that the karate dojo or whatever that I practiced karate in as a nine year old was down, and it wasn't.
00:39:53.635 --> 00:39:57.845
But because I'm sitting on a brown couch, I'm remembering it being brown.
00:39:57.845 --> 00:39:58.166
Yeah.
00:39:58.166 --> 00:40:03.724
And it's those little things get pre-crept in because you just sort of grasp whatever.
00:40:03.724 --> 00:40:04.085
Yeah.
00:40:05.956 --> 00:40:07.814
It's sitting in your subconscious to keep you going.
00:40:07.814 --> 00:40:09.378
So it's like I don't.
00:40:09.378 --> 00:40:14.327
I wouldn't trust that nearly as much as being able to go back in time and observe it all over again.
00:40:14.327 --> 00:40:14.948
Yeah.
00:40:17.175 --> 00:40:27.124
Well, I think, getting sort of back to our I took us off on a tangent there, but you know the in terms of the time travel aspect it's.
00:40:27.124 --> 00:40:33.689
I guess it's just interesting because there are a lot of.
00:40:33.689 --> 00:40:40.855
I mean, there's not only is there like the physical hey, do I, you know, can we actually do it?
00:40:40.855 --> 00:40:42.925
But then the question of whether we should do it.
00:40:42.925 --> 00:40:56.286
You know, it's like the Jeff Goldblum, it's like, yeah, we, we, we asked whether we could do it, we didn't ask where we should, right, and so then the question would be whether, whether we should do something like that, like what, what?
00:40:56.286 --> 00:40:57.608
What impact could it have?
00:40:58.336 --> 00:40:59.238
Obviously, there's the.
00:40:59.238 --> 00:41:05.875
You know, if science fiction is true, then it's like, hey, if I go back in time, do I affect that timeline?
00:41:05.875 --> 00:41:13.646
And we have start talking about multiverses and all the things that everyone's talking about right now because of the MCU, basically.
00:41:13.646 --> 00:41:22.363
But you know multiverses, and hey, if I go back and do something, does that change the course of like like?
00:41:22.363 --> 00:41:32.802
The example I see in here is like, yeah, the paradox of like you traveling back in time and killing your own grandfather, well, you can't, that's impossible, because you wouldn't.
00:41:32.802 --> 00:41:41.588
If you killed your own grandfather, you wouldn't have been born, so then you wouldn't be there to travel in time to go back to kill your own grandfather, right?
00:41:41.588 --> 00:41:44.905
So blah, blah, blah Right.
00:41:51.300 --> 00:41:51.802
So okay.
00:41:51.802 --> 00:41:53.318
So what there's?
00:41:53.318 --> 00:41:57.325
There's a time travel movie that breaks my brain and I've.
00:41:57.325 --> 00:41:59.509
I probably have to watch it again.
00:41:59.509 --> 00:42:05.601
I don't have any hopes of ever making sense of it, but it's called predestination.
00:42:05.601 --> 00:42:06.383
Uh huh.
00:42:06.383 --> 00:42:09.523
And it's Darv's Ethan Hawk.
00:42:09.523 --> 00:42:12.177
So not a small time actor.
00:42:12.177 --> 00:42:16.483
And yeah it's I have.
00:42:16.483 --> 00:42:17.666
Let's see what's the rating.
00:42:17.666 --> 00:42:24.390
I don't know if I'm recommending a Badrated movie parents guy, but yeah it'll, it'll mess with you.
00:42:24.390 --> 00:42:30.070
If you like time trial movies, Would love to know it are what is it called again?
00:42:31.700 --> 00:42:34.086
Predestination predestination is rated R.
00:42:34.488 --> 00:42:35.130
It is rated R.
00:42:35.130 --> 00:42:35.590
Okay.
00:42:35.590 --> 00:42:38.427
So 2014.
00:42:38.448 --> 00:42:49.489
Yeah, yep, I Like Ethan Hawke, though he's in another movie that's like a futuristic movie that I like a lot Gadica, which is awesome movie.
00:42:49.489 --> 00:42:54.950
Creed all right, so then check that out.
00:42:56.121 --> 00:42:56.864
Sure, you wait.
00:42:56.864 --> 00:42:58.349
I interrupted you, I'm sorry.
00:43:00.401 --> 00:43:02.970
You did interrupt me, but I don't remember what I was saying.
00:43:02.970 --> 00:43:07.659
No, I'm sorry, it's getting to be that time.
00:43:07.659 --> 00:43:15.518
Um, yeah, that movie that I mentioned before, the sad movie, is called about time and.
00:43:15.518 --> 00:43:16.202
That's.
00:43:16.202 --> 00:43:22.125
That's the one where, like they have, you know, the family has their Superpower or whatever within the family is.
00:43:22.125 --> 00:43:28.007
Yeah, everybody is able to travel in time, but it has certain restrictions and consequences, things like that.
00:43:28.168 --> 00:43:39.242
So Sure, but it is maybe sometimes a metaphor of, you know, living in regret, or yes.
00:43:39.242 --> 00:43:47.970
Worrying about the future you know we and within our minds, we kind of travel Back in time or live in the past, as it were.
00:43:48.901 --> 00:43:52.084
Yeah, Well, it's a good point.
00:43:52.084 --> 00:44:13.682
What you made like our minds being creative or, excuse me, constructive, like that is that I, I just had a recent interaction with my younger sister and we were remembering the same memory, but and I don't know if she's miss remembering or I miss remembering but we remember it completely different, like in completely different locations and in completely so like you know it.
00:44:13.682 --> 00:44:14.945
I'm like, didn't that happen there?
00:44:14.945 --> 00:44:17.383
And she's like, no, I think it happened here and I'm like I don't know.
00:44:17.383 --> 00:44:19.750
I thought it did, but I think I might be.
00:44:19.750 --> 00:44:22.952
My brain could be mixing two memories together.
00:44:22.952 --> 00:44:29.903
Her, her memory could be bad, you know, then, actually, in the legal arena, we get this into a lot.
00:44:29.903 --> 00:44:35.561
This is like, not even with regard to time travel, but it's with regard to memory of Eyewitness.
00:44:35.561 --> 00:44:45.311
I witness verification, and we still hold that to some like super high esteem in terms of evidence in a court, and the fact is that our brains are totally faulty.
00:44:45.311 --> 00:44:50.793
So, and I triggered you to do Google something, so it's definitely I did something right.
00:44:51.921 --> 00:44:56.968
Yes, neil deGrasse Tyson, I think you talked.
00:44:56.968 --> 00:44:58.210
He was talking to Joe Rogan.
00:44:58.210 --> 00:45:23.416
Yeah, and it was something about you know, and again I'm admitting to having a vague recollection of this, but but the the gist is that the judge asked if Anyone would have a problem, you know, for jury duty, if you wouldn't have a problem Drawing a guilty, non-guilty conclusion with this evidence and the only evidence was.
00:45:24.038 --> 00:45:24.840
I witnessed testimony.
00:45:24.840 --> 00:45:28.213
You know the police tried to find stuff you know licked in dumpsters.
00:45:28.213 --> 00:45:30.744
It might have been a purse snatching, I don't remember exactly.
00:45:30.744 --> 00:45:42.769
But Neil deGrasse Tyson said like your honor, I would not feel comfortable if this is the only, if the only evidence is eyewitness evidence.
00:45:42.769 --> 00:45:55.506
I do not feel comfortable making a determination and and and I don't remember how the judge misheard, but the judge says so.
00:45:55.506 --> 00:45:55.787
Is it?
00:45:55.787 --> 00:46:03.865
Is it right that you you wouldn't trust evidence presented by the court?
00:46:03.865 --> 00:46:06.452
Or or rock solid again.
00:46:06.452 --> 00:46:10.206
She here, she, the judge, misheard something, misinterpreted something.
00:46:10.206 --> 00:46:17.184
Yeah and um, and somebody else who was gonna be a juror candidate spoke up so that Neil deGrasse didn't have to.
00:46:17.184 --> 00:46:18.088
Is like your honor with?
00:46:18.088 --> 00:46:21.786
With respect, that's not what he said.
00:46:22.561 --> 00:46:26.440
Yeah, you are an eyewitness to what he said and you did not hear what he said.
00:46:26.440 --> 00:46:31.010
Yeah, you misinterpreted you and it was like this in the moment.
00:46:31.010 --> 00:46:35.207
Great anecdote of how like Even something within a few seconds.
00:46:35.207 --> 00:46:36.101
Mm-hmm.
00:46:36.101 --> 00:46:39.387
Nobody has a perfect recollection of what just transpired.
00:46:39.387 --> 00:46:47.012
That's right yeah we apply our own influence, ideas, subjectivity and Things get lost right away.
00:46:47.072 --> 00:46:48.740
We're not which it goes back to you.
00:46:48.740 --> 00:46:51.248
I mean, on our subject, our perception of time.
00:46:51.248 --> 00:47:07.309
Because If you're in one of those moments where you're in, you're in the mode of passing time, like you're sitting in an airport, you're not really paying attention to your surroundings because you're just like I'm trying to get through this, our weight or whatever I got to do In a doctor's office waiting room or whatever that is.
00:47:07.309 --> 00:47:18.692
You know you're probably not gonna perceive things in detail, whereas you know if you're really paying attention you don't have your hand in your phone, in your hand and things like that.
00:47:18.692 --> 00:47:22.468
Then you know you might be able to recollect more clearly.
00:47:22.768 --> 00:47:29.249
So and that, and that's why I, like my, don't trust my memory if I'm not paying attention to something.
00:47:29.249 --> 00:47:34.865
Yeah and being open to what I'm seeing, then the the fidelity of what I'm recording.
00:47:35.365 --> 00:47:38.992
Yeah very poor right in my memory the fidelity.
00:47:38.992 --> 00:47:44.505
Wow, all right low fidelity Picture right.
00:47:45.582 --> 00:47:50.000
Or or I start putting the thing, other things related next to it and end up conflating memories.
00:47:50.000 --> 00:47:52.378
You know they mix together well that happens to me a lot.
00:47:52.599 --> 00:47:57.593
I think where I'm like I remember it this way and then Then I'll like speak with my mom about it.
00:47:57.593 --> 00:47:58.940
She's like no, I don't think that happened there.
00:47:58.940 --> 00:48:01.407
But then I'm, then you're so convinced of it.
00:48:01.407 --> 00:48:03.072
That's the thing about I witnessed stuff.
00:48:03.072 --> 00:48:13.251
You're so convinced that your brain is not faulty, like you're trying to trick yourself into think like no, I saw that and it's, you know, and it's the.
00:48:13.251 --> 00:48:23.440
I guess I don't say it was probably one of those fallacies, you know, cognitive or cognitive by cognitive biases that we talked about is for the reason for that.
00:48:23.440 --> 00:48:28.291
So, just like belief that your brain doesn't fake is not faking you out, you know.
00:48:29.023 --> 00:48:31.361
But that wasn't.
00:48:31.361 --> 00:48:36.432
That I came across in our research for the previous episodes is that memory has a lot to do with our perception of time.
00:48:36.432 --> 00:48:39.461
Ah, yeah, yes.
00:48:39.461 --> 00:48:48.034
It's like what, what we remember recently, or people who have permanent damage to their ability to record short-term memory, long-term memory.
00:48:48.034 --> 00:48:52.840
Yes have no kind like they think they're just waking up.
00:48:52.840 --> 00:48:55.088
Right every minute.
00:48:55.088 --> 00:48:57.537
They think they just woke up right and it's.
00:48:57.537 --> 00:48:58.340
It's like hell.
00:48:58.340 --> 00:49:01.521
They'll take notes like a and it.
00:49:01.521 --> 00:49:05.550
They just they see their previous notes and they they feel like they're going crazy.
00:49:05.771 --> 00:49:06.213
Memento.
00:49:06.213 --> 00:49:08.525
Yeah the movie.
00:49:08.525 --> 00:49:16.720
Yeah, well, he literally had like seconds of stuff tattooed on his body because he's like I don't want to forget this.
00:49:16.720 --> 00:49:24.231
So he's like, hey, tattoo this on my body so that I can look at my forearm and see, oh, don't trust the guy that wears the blue jacket or whatever you know.
00:49:25.702 --> 00:49:32.057
I think we all have some of that to some extent, right Like I've looked at code, I've written, I'm like I don't remember this at all.
00:49:32.219 --> 00:49:32.800
Yes, like.
00:49:33.302 --> 00:49:39.643
I'm so glad that I gave myself some comments to help me remember what I was thinking at the time, because this is stupid, this doesn't make any sense.
00:49:39.643 --> 00:49:42.349
Yeah thinking and like oh, that's what I was thinking.
00:49:42.349 --> 00:49:42.972
Yeah.
00:49:42.972 --> 00:49:44.925
Same thing with journaling.
00:49:44.925 --> 00:49:46.472
It's like did I write that man?
00:49:46.472 --> 00:49:48.400
I was a self-centered jerk.
00:49:48.400 --> 00:49:50.766
Am I still a self-centered jerk?
00:49:50.766 --> 00:49:52.110
Oh my gosh.
00:49:52.110 --> 00:49:52.932
And then yeah.
00:49:55.643 --> 00:50:00.613
And then the next entry in the journal is hey, stop calling yourself self-centered jerk, everything's gonna be fine.
00:50:00.613 --> 00:50:04.744
No, this is your future self.
00:50:04.744 --> 00:50:07.769
I actually said that in our toast master's meeting yesterday.
00:50:07.769 --> 00:50:15.260
Your future self like Referring to your future self your future self is not gonna regret, as your future self will thank you for you doing this.
00:50:15.260 --> 00:50:22.869
You know like, and there's this perception of like, oh yeah, I'm actually building my future self right now, like in the present moment.
00:50:22.869 --> 00:50:26.605
I'm building my future self, whether that's two seconds from now or ten years from now.
00:50:26.605 --> 00:50:32.836
Right, and then hey, to being a fur full circle is.
00:50:32.836 --> 00:50:37.322
Bring it back to our favorite atomic habits, james.
00:50:37.322 --> 00:50:43.460
Clear is your habits are building you in the for you like your future self.
00:50:43.460 --> 00:50:46.447
So like, the more you know as you're going down the path.
00:50:46.447 --> 00:50:52.474
If you have a habit and you habitually do something, then that's that's going to play into who your future self is.
00:50:52.474 --> 00:51:00.445
So I Don't know, it was a really big stretch to get us back to that, but but, but again, that's that.
00:51:00.506 --> 00:51:03.557
That is like how we are traveling into the future.
00:51:03.557 --> 00:51:06.163
Now, right is Setting yourself up.
00:51:06.163 --> 00:51:08.788
Yep for the future is working in the present.
00:51:08.788 --> 00:51:14.785
Yeah, residual benefits in the future, um, otherwise life will pass you by.
00:51:15.780 --> 00:51:18.824
That's right Like you're a cryogenic sleep.
00:51:18.824 --> 00:51:25.845
Well, what I hope is I hope that the people that listen to this don't Think that they were like man.
00:51:25.845 --> 00:51:27.648
I really wish I could have that time back.
00:51:27.648 --> 00:51:31.269
Like I wish I could travel back in time and say don't.
00:51:31.269 --> 00:51:37.561
I shouldn't have listened to these three episodes in February.
00:51:37.561 --> 00:51:39.469
I don't know what the heck I was thinking.
00:51:41.401 --> 00:51:42.604
Just send us that hate mail.
00:51:42.604 --> 00:51:48.304
Yeah extra five minutes and tells what you really think, so we can Shape up right.
00:51:48.865 --> 00:51:50.351
All right, that's it.
00:51:50.351 --> 00:51:52.463
That's all she wrote.
00:51:52.463 --> 00:52:00.287
We're gonna travel few into the future in a positive way, together, yellow simmering, see ya.
