ABOUT THIS EPISODE
In this 103rd episode of Hearabouts: Asian American Midwest Radio (our 1st for the new year 2026!), we’ve invited Tony Nguyen, a filmmaker and documentarian, whose film Year of the Cat (2025) was screened at Indiana University in November last year. Crafted as an investigative home movie, the film is a raw and intimate documentary that weaves moments of humor and heartache, revealing how war, loss, and displacement continue to shape the lives of refugees’ children. In today’s episode, discuss filmmaking, the search for an authentic creative voice, how personal history shapes identity, and the vulnerability required to ask difficult questions.
Hearabouts: Asian American Midwest Radio is produced by Indiana University’s Asian Culture Center in collaboration with WFHB Bloomington Community Radio. The show asks critical questions about identity, culture, community, and belonging, centering the experiences of Asian Americans in the Midwest. This episode was produced and hosted by Suyash Kumar Neupane.
