Speaker 1: You're listening to Hawk Talk with former Seahawks wide receiver Michael Bumpus. Powered by Seahawks.com. Now, here's your host, Nassau Chobie.
00:00:11
Speaker 2: Welcome to another edition of Hawk Talk. The Seahawks back in the winning column, beating the Los Angeles Chargers by a score of 30-23 bump. And it was an interesting game. You know, they talk about a tail two halves. This game was more than that. This game was a beat down by the Seahawks.
00:00:28
Speaker 1: They were dominant. They were in control.
00:00:30
Speaker 2: For most of the game, they let the Chargers back into it. You got to give credit to where credit's due. They made some plays. But this wasn't a game you ever felt the Seahawks was in jeopardy for them at any point.
00:00:39
Speaker 3: No, I felt good about it. There were too many penalties out there, both sides of the ball. And we had a 55-minute first quarter because of the way the game was going. But the Chargers came back late, but I still felt like the game was under control. Defense did enough. Offense, we had some new faces getting to the end zone, which is fun. So, yeah, way to bounce back. Yeah, no, I mean, obviously the penalties, you can't have that. The Seahawks, 14 penalties, 150 yards. Chargers, 16 penalties, 130 yards.
00:01:05
Speaker 4: Crazy.
00:01:05
Speaker 2: Most penalty yardage in Seahawks history. So it was a tough day out there. Obviously, there were some penalties that you go, like Coach McDonald said, it costs to do a business. There were some penalties that you'd hope you'd have back. But it was, at the end of the day, the Seahawks did make a play in all three phases of the games that helped them win this game. You improved to 3-1 on the season. You never apologized for wins. Let's get right back into what happened yesterday, what had happened.
00:01:29
Speaker 1: See, what had happened was... What had happened at first was... What had happened was... On Hawk Talk.
00:01:36
Speaker 2: Game started off with a bang, though. I mean, you can't ask for anything more than that. Drake Thomas picks off Justin Herbert on play one. A great athletic play. Herbert thought he could sneak one in there. Interesting decision, given the route concept. But he did a great job. He tipped it up, made the play. And, oh, see Oxford Business. Unfortunately, Sam Darnold was then intercepted by Tuli. Tuli Pelota on the very next play. And... That's also never happened, apparently, in the history of the National Football League. Both teams throwing an interception on the first play of the game.
00:02:03
Speaker 3: I was actually standing next to my buddy. I met him before or during the first quarter. First time there in a while. I'll link up with him real quick. And he said to me, he goes, that has to be the first time that's ever happened in NFL history. I go, no, I'm sure it's happened before. No, first time it's ever happened in NFL history. Yeah, we witness greatness.
00:02:23
Speaker 1: In a certain type of way, you know, the Chargers take off of that.
00:02:26
Speaker 2: They go, they turn that turnover into three points with a field goal from Cameron Dicker. After a three and out, the Seahawks were rewarded by a muff punt from Darius Davis. That was a cover by Conor O'Toole. Great play, great hustle. You know, everyone did their job. Michael Dixon put it in the air. And then if you hustle to the football and you run down and cover kicks, good things happen.
00:02:43
Speaker 1: That's what happened to Conor O'Toole.
00:02:45
Speaker 2: Next play for the Seahawks, Sam Darnold connected with Emmanuel Wilson for a nice screen play. For a 22-yard touchdown, that made the score 7-3.
00:02:52
Speaker 1: We'll break that down a little bit later.
00:02:54
Speaker 3: Yeah, and then the next seven drives is kind of not a lot going on. They all ended in punts. There were 10 possessions in the first quarter alone. Ten of those things. The Seahawks finally put together a long drive going seven plays, 65 yards, and it would have much needed a 28-touchdown run from Rasheed Shaheed. We love to see it. Put him in the backfield. Big Ray called it. Put him in the backfield. Toss outside.
00:03:16
Speaker 5: Bam.
00:03:17
Speaker 4: Did a thing. That made the score 13-3.
00:03:19
Speaker 2: Yeah, we've been waiting to see that all season long. So to see that sprinkled out there and, more importantly, put on film, we'll dive into that a little bit depth later.
00:03:26
Speaker 1: 13-3 score, like you said.
00:03:28
Speaker 2: After back-to-back punts, Ernest Jones does what he did all of last year. He had six interceptions for Seahawks last year. Gets his first one this year, picking off Justin Herbert. That gave the Seahawks great field position. After that, two plays later, Emmanuel Wilson finds the end zone again from eight yards out. Made the score 20-3 Seattle. And the last thing before half, that was a bummer. Seahawks are dominating the football game. gifted a field goal because time's going to run out. Seahawks get a personal foul called and want to have that back. Doesn't happen. Either way, Seahawks go into the half up 20-6.
00:03:57
Speaker 3: Yeah, that was a gift, all right, after that personal foul. Then the Hawks will come out strong to start the second half. They go eight plays, 68 yards. Anyway, the six-yard touchdown to Torrey Harden, his first one of the year. That made the score 26-6. At that point, it felt like they're going to blow these guys out. I'm feeling good. Everything's moving. But unfortunately, it did not go that way. The Chargers will respond to go 11 plays, 81 yards. They ended with a Vidal, is that what you said?
00:04:22
Speaker 4: Vidal, maybe. Vidal, yeah. Nine-yard touchdown. That made the score 27-13.
00:04:25
Speaker 2: Yeah, it was a little disappointing for those possessions not to get off the field. Seahawks add a field goal, but then this is kind of the one that was the most disappointing in the game, in my opinion. Seahawks give up a 16-play, 85-yard drive. That was aided by two rough-in-the-passer penalties, a couple other ones, one from DeMarcus Lawrence, one from Derek Hall. I can't fault DeMarcus Lawrence at all. He's trying to make a play. In no way is it dirty. He's stumbling.
00:04:50
Speaker 1: He's in the pocket. It's unfortunate.
00:04:51
Speaker 2: Derek Hall, for about, I don't know, up until however many years ago, that's just called a football play. Unfortunately, it is what it is. You have to try to show an effort that you're not driving him into the ground. It's unfortunate, but it's one of those things where you just, you know how good the Seahawks defense is. They don't give up 16 play drives. They get off the field. That was unfortunate. That made the game close at 30 to 20. Yeah, and then the Hawks punted.
00:05:16
Speaker 3: The Chargers made a one-score game after another field goal. After another Seahawks punt, the Chargers got the ball back down seven with a minute and 42 seconds left, but the Hawks would ice the game with a strip sack from Chenna Nwosu that was recovered by Derek Hall to ice the game.
00:05:32
Speaker 2: And, again, I'll say this, and I won't apologize for it. You don't apologize for wins. Wins are hard in the National Football League.
00:05:39
Speaker 5: Take them.
00:05:39
Speaker 2: And I think, again, when you get a good football team, you get spoiled by good performances.
00:05:44
Speaker 1: You'd won 12 in a row. You'd won a Super Bowl.
00:05:46
Speaker 2: So the expectations for everyone watching a Seahawks game is so high that when anything bad happens, it's tough, especially when you were dominating the football game. There's disappointment because you want to finish the way this team knows how to finish. But you look at this game at the end, the Chargers, after all that, they actually outgained the Seahawks 3-0-1 to 2-86. They outrushed the Seahawks 1-47, 1-38. A little edge in time possession, but the only stat that mattered, Bump, was turnovers really at the end of the day. It bit the Seahawks the week before this week. The Seahawks win the turnover battle 4-1, and that was the big difference.
00:06:16
Speaker 1: In the ballgame.
00:06:17
Speaker 4: Yeah, take care of the football. We know what the rule is.
00:06:20
Speaker 3: Every analyst across the nation, if you don't know what to say about a game, say, hey, you just got to take care of the football.
00:06:26
Speaker 4: Because that's real.
00:06:27
Speaker 3: No matter what level, you take care of the football, you got a chance to win. So, yeah, they didn't win in dominating fashion. It felt dominant at times, though.
00:06:34
Speaker 1: Correct.
00:06:34
Speaker 3: You look at the score, you're like, oh, it was a closer game. But there were moments in the game. where you felt like, all right, this thing is over. And Justin Herbert is sore this morning, that's for sure. Our guy is sore, too.
00:06:44
Speaker 4: He took some hits. But Justin is sore.
00:06:46
Speaker 2: Oh, no, absolutely. Okay, you've obviously taken some time. You've watched the film. What did we learn from last night?
00:06:51
Speaker 3: We learned that you don't necessarily need Jason to go for $ 1. 50 every time. You know, you got a guy scoring the first touchdown. Emmanuel Wilson scored his first touchdown. Torrey Horton, Rasheed Shaheed. That's what you need when Jason isn't able to have the explosive day that we're used to have and he did have an explosive catch with a 28 yard i believe on 30 16 or 15 yeah um still had five or seven for 76 yards but this is a team other guys can step up and fill a void.
00:07:16
Speaker 2: Yeah absolutely i love i echo that 110 i learned i shouldn't say i learned this but i continue to confirm how good byard murphy is yeah we talked about in the post game show he is going to be an all-pro player at some point just watch that sack and that's just The sack is great because that's a splash play. Watch him on all the run plays. There's a reason the Seahawks have not allowed a 100-yard rusher in 30 games because of plays like from Byron Murphy. And then again, for me, when it's push come to shove and it's winning time, they talk about living in the death zone and all that. Yeah, that was apparent on Sunday when they had to have it back on the field.
00:07:50
Speaker 1: I think J.
00:07:50
Speaker 2: Reid got everyone together, gave an impassioned speech, probably firing people up. I don't want J.
00:07:55
Speaker 5: Reid.
00:07:56
Speaker 2: Yelling at me or upset with me. Got the boys together and boom, right off the bat, boom, strip sack. Seahawks win the game. And again, three and one, you'll take it. Heading into a big matchup this week against San Francisco. But there were so many people making plays on Sunday.
00:08:09
Speaker 1: Playmakers.
00:08:12
Speaker 5: Touchdown Seahawks!
00:08:15
Speaker 1: Playmakers. Show them what time it is! Holy caffeine!
00:08:21
Speaker 2: We'll start on offense. It wasn't the best day in terms of stats rise, right? Sam Darnold, 13-22, 168, two touchdowns, the one interception, QB rating of 94.5. He did enough to put the Seahawks in position to win and get into that dominating fashion. You don't want the interception on the first play of the game. You know, he talked about a postgame, obviously, one you want to have back. Didn't expect his check down to be covered.
00:08:41
Speaker 1: The way it was. Great play by Tuli Peloto.
00:08:44
Speaker 2: But overall, I thought Sam did a good job and kept the Seahawks in a good place there. And we mentioned Jackson Smith and Jigba. I'll let you get to all the other big playmakers. But JSN, if five receptions for 76 yards is just like a quiet, like, man, you know, he didn't go off. He didn't do his thing. But if you did that for an entire season, you'd have almost 1,300 yards. You'd almost break the previous Seahawks single-season receiving record if you averaged 76 yards a game.
00:09:09
Speaker 4: That's crazy. I didn't even look at it like that.
00:09:11
Speaker 2: So that just goes to show where JSN is at this moment. So anyway, and you mentioned that was a huge play because, The Seahawks turned that drive into points. They were kind of struggling offensively. Third and 15 is supposed to not be anything.
00:09:22
Speaker 1: You're punting.
00:09:23
Speaker 2: Third and 15, you're punting the football. I think the caption on NFL was third and Jason, and he made the play and kept the drive alive and Seahawks scored on it.
00:09:30
Speaker 4: That's what he does, man.
00:09:31
Speaker 1: All right.
00:09:32
Speaker 3: Emmanuel Wilson had himself a good day. 21 carries for 81 yards and one touchdown. He also had three receptions for 39 and a touchdown. Rasheed Shaheed got his first score at the running back spot, but we will take that at two for 33 and one touchdown. Also, Had a big reception and a little crosser going across the field for 20 yards as well.
00:09:53
Speaker 2: Yeah, no, again, Shahid right on cue. It's almost like you could feel it. The second he got in the end zone, I was so happy for that dude.
00:09:59
Speaker 1: Just giving all the fun.
00:10:00
Speaker 2: He's gotten recently then ernest jones he's a leader on this football team always has been since he stepped foot in seattle that's immediately when this defense change under coach mcdonald continues to put up numbers 12 tackles one tfl one sack one qb one pass event and one interception ernest jones all over the field making plays.
00:10:16
Speaker 3: Yeah it's fun watching ernest man he got a gift That interception, I don't know what Justin Herbert was looking at. He was looking at the dig behind him, but Ernest was in the right spot. But you do your job, you will get rewarded. Nicky Manwari had a day as well. Nine tackles, two TFLs, one sack, one pass, two quarterback hits, and he lined up all over the field. He was at the edge from a four-point. You see him on the second level. One of, if not the most versatile player in the NFL. And I feel like as the season progresses, he's going to get even more healthier. even more confident, he's going to keep making plays.
00:10:50
Speaker 2: Yeah, when you see someone like that, a safety lineup in a sprinter stance, like he's Nick Bosa or something like that, and then went up against Joe Ault and almost won the rep, almost got to the quarterback, the next time he kind of got launched, got pushed behind the.
00:11:02
Speaker 1: Quarterback, kind of got launched airborne for a little bit. You learn.
00:11:05
Speaker 4: You live and learn.
00:11:05
Speaker 2: But listen, Nick, even though he's just so fun to watch, and you're right, he has to be the most versatile player in football. I don't know another person that can line up against an actual offensive lineman and just No, nothing crazy.
00:11:17
Speaker 1: I'm rushing, and you know that I'm rushing.
00:11:19
Speaker 2: And to not get immediately pancaked or pushed off the ball, Nick's a special dude for sure. Then we'll cap it with Chen and Uosu. All he's done is make plays. Another guy since he came to Seattle in 22. Three tackles, one TFL, one sack, one forced home, three QB hits against his former team. When it's come winning time, he makes a play at the end of the day. Love what Chen is doing, as always. Bump, a little bit different receiver roundup this week.
00:11:42
Speaker 4: Yeah, it is. We got.
00:11:43
Speaker 3: A lot of guys with one reception. Only 13 receptions overall. Jason had five of them for 76 yards. Emmanuel Wilson, second leading receiver on this team, had running back three for 39. Rashisha Heath had one big one for 20. Cooper Cupp had one for 13. AJ had one for 12. Horton had one for six and a touchdown. And George Helani won for a couple of yards. Yeah, now, the numbers aren't as inflated as they have been this year.
00:12:06
Speaker 4: But you know what? You still put up 30 points. Still got the W.
00:12:09
Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, you still like it when you rush for over 100 yards, so. Definitely splitting the wealth there. Let's flip it over to the plays of the game. This first one, Emmanuel Wilson finds the end zone on 23-yard touchdown with a screen from Sam Darnold.
00:12:22
Speaker 1: Sam looks to swing the pass out.
00:12:24
Speaker 4: Now he dumps the screen pass over to the right side. It's Wilson. He's inside the 15, down to the 10, down.
00:12:28
Speaker 1: To the 5.
00:12:29
Speaker 4: He is in.
00:12:29
Speaker 5: Touchdown, Seahawks. That is Seahawks football, baby.
00:12:38
Speaker 4: Take advantage of the turnover.
00:12:40
Speaker 5: And number 23, Wilson, takes it 23 yards to the house.
00:12:46
Speaker 3: Yeah, two receivers in a stacked position and a tight end to the right side. I like the little orbit motion. You see Rasheed Shaheed behind the quarterback. Just getting the attention of the defense, right? Get your eyes on Deuce Deuce. Let's see what we do. Now, Sam gets into his drawback. Defensive lineman. If it's too good to be true, it probably is. Off is the lineman. You pass pro.
00:13:07
Speaker 5: Boom.
00:13:07
Speaker 4: You let him go.
00:13:08
Speaker 3: Clearly setting up a nice little screen. You got a little play action by Emmanuel Wilson. Then he falls off to the flap. You got three bigs in front of you, ready to go. Bodies on bodies hitting the floor. And also, you got your wide receivers down the field blocking as well. The rest is just Emmanuel, man. You got bodies on bodies with the bigs. DBs don't want to touch the bigs. And then you have your wide out out there blocking. Beautiful screen. This screen and the A.J. Barner screen has broken the curse. This team can run screens. But, yeah, I like this, man. Wasted no time after a turnover, too.
00:13:41
Speaker 2: Yeah, and again, for people who have been Seahawks fans for a long time, there was a long gap in there where we could not run screens.
00:13:49
Speaker 1: I don't know what it was. Different coordinators and people calling plays.
00:13:52
Speaker 2: You started to see a little bit of Kubiak last year, and just to see it again, and it's just such a weapon for this offense when you can run a screen and take Pressure off if you're getting a lot of heat from the defensive line. Sundell, Zabel, Haynes all get out front, get great blocks in the play. Haynes gets his guy. Sundell hooks his guy. Cupps blocking down the field. And then Wilson, you mentioned it. Once he gets in there, the lanes, he's patient and then gets downhill. And then you're right. The rest is on him. Cupp does as much as he can, but then Wilson finishes at the end of the play. That's just winning football. That's a winning football play. And then for the Chargers. Not great effort on the back end.
00:14:26
Speaker 4: Nah.
00:14:27
Speaker 1: The corner looked like it was swoosh tempo there at the end.
00:14:29
Speaker 3: And the way Emmanuel finished that, he wasn't trying to run around nobody. I'm running through you. This is what I do. But, yes, you're right. Someone's going to have a negative on that play for the Chargers. That's going to be a minus for the finish there. But Rabel said it best. That's Seahawk football. You saw it getting into the end zone.
00:14:45
Speaker 2: Another play that is really indicative of Seahawk football is Rasheed Jaheed getting in the end zone.
00:14:50
Speaker 1: 28-yard touchdown run.
00:14:52
Speaker 4: Rashid Shaheed in the backfield. He gets the toss, goes left side, cuts back in.
00:14:55
Speaker 5: He's got some running room down the far side. 10, 5, touchdown Seahawks!
00:15:04
Speaker 1: A 27-yarder.
00:15:05
Speaker 5: And for all you folks out there who've been wondering, well, where is Rashid Shaheed?
00:15:09
Speaker 1: How come we don't get him the ball more?
00:15:11
Speaker 5: He has made play after play today.
00:15:13
Speaker 4: We haven't even reached halftime.
00:15:16
Speaker 3: All right, man, you got a little heavy formation, a little bunch formation to the left side. You got Shahid in the backfield. Sam Donald is under center. Everything is just going to stretch left, all right? You got receivers that are in the bunch. They're blocking down, trying to get bodies on those linebackers. Then you have your tackle who's getting wide. He kicks out the end. Then you have your, I believe it's the tight end that gets to the corner.
00:15:36
Speaker 4: It's just beautifully blocked, man.
00:15:37
Speaker 3: There's always going to be someone that you have to make miss, and it's usually on that third level. But once you get wide and you set up your blocks like this, it's a beautiful thing, man. Rasheed Shahid catches the toss, gets outside. cuts up inside the block of the tackle, and now he's just following numbers. You follow numbers. You follow daylight. You're the fastest man on the field. It sure did look like it on that play.
00:15:56
Speaker 1: No, it was great.
00:15:57
Speaker 2: You had Cross as a great block right now at that point of attack. Cup has a great block, sealing him, getting through there. And then my favorite play, well, actually, back up. Before I get to my favorite part of the play, you have Sundell chasing down a safety. He gets the safety on the play side. And then the winning play here is JSN. He is on the opposite side of the field. And, you know, essentially the equivalent of a savior angle on defense gets across the field and gets in the play and makes the winning block for a touchdown. You want to talk about a guy who's the reigning offensive player of the year. The best receiver in football is putting up stupid numbers. Some guys will take that play off. But that's a great run by Shahid. I'll get ready for the next play. No, Jason buses.
00:16:37
Speaker 1: You know what?
00:16:38
Speaker 2: Down there gets a touchdown block right there. And, again, winning football.
00:16:42
Speaker 4: I love how excited Jason was for Rashid Shaheed, too.
00:16:45
Speaker 3: These guys know, right? Everybody's talking. Shaheed hasn't scored a touchdown yet. Jason blocking his you-know-what off and then celebrating with his boy.
00:16:54
Speaker 4: I love to see that. It was genuine joy. Yes, let's all eat.
00:16:57
Speaker 2: Yeah, and I love it, too, because Jason, as you talked about, he takes pride in his run blocking, that he's a complete football player.
00:17:03
Speaker 1: And you're right.
00:17:03
Speaker 2: All these guys are in it for each other. They want each other to eat and win, and they absolutely did that. Seahawks got the job done beating the Chargers. And we're finally back to the formation we're normally in, victory formation.
00:17:16
Speaker 5: Here comes the Seahawks offense onto the field and the Vikings defense trudging out there, knowing that one kneel down and the Seahawks are going to wind the clock down.
00:17:27
Speaker 1: And win this one. It's the victory formation on Hawk Talk.
00:17:31
Speaker 2: Seahawks beat the Chargers 30-23, dominating most of this football game. It never felt like the game was in jeopardy. We're up 26-7 at one point. They let them hang around, but they got the job done in the end. Yeah, last week, the Hawks turned the ball over. They lose the ball game. This week, they cause turnovers. They win the ball game.
00:17:48
Speaker 3: They won the turnover battle 4-1, and they're without Jadarian Price. But the first full game in Jason didn't go crazy, so other people had to step up.
00:17:57
Speaker 4: Emmanuel Wilson had 120 total yards, two touchdowns.
00:17:58
Speaker 1: Shahid.
00:18:00
Speaker 3: Had explosive 28-yard touchdown and a big cash in. Horton scoring his first session of the year as well.
00:18:05
Speaker 2: Yeah, I love what we saw from Torrey on that because if you're defensively, you're probably like, okay, super heavy formation.
00:18:10
Speaker 1: You're off. They're not throwing.
00:18:11
Speaker 4: Three tight ends in that thing. Yeah.
00:18:13
Speaker 2: They're going to run this thing. He does a nice little slant, so good to see Torrey getting action there. And defensively, you're led by Ernest Jones, balled out 12 tackles, one sack, one TFL, one interception. Nicky Minori, the human Swiss Army knife, did his best game of the year, nine tackles, two TFLs, one sack, two QB hits. Coach McDonald essentially said, okay, we're getting Nicky Minori now. There's no more shot clock. There's no more watching his reps. He's going to be out there most of the play, so good to see that. And then Drake Thomas, DeMarcus Lawrence, Chetan Owusu all making big plays.
00:18:41
Speaker 4: Yeah. You just got to fix the penalties, right? No penalties. Get off the field.
00:18:47
Speaker 3: Take care of the ball, as every analyst says across the country. And it should be set up for a showdown, man. It's going down. Niners 4-0. You're 3-1. Who's going to be the best team in the division? I'm looking forward to this next one.
00:19:00
Speaker 2: No, it's going to be great. America's Game of the Week. Niners coming back to Lumen Field. We know what happened last time. Me and Bumper are going to get you everything you need to know ahead of that matchup because it's going to be a big one. Biggest game in the NFL going down next week. But it's good to see. One quick thing we didn't mention. It looks like Leonard Williams is doing well, so we hope that continues and he'll be back out there. They avoided serious injury on that because he's a guy that's really important for this team as well. He's Michael Bumpus. I'm Nassif Chobi. This has been Hawk Talk. We're going to get you ready for that Niners matchup. Coming up on Thursday. Until next time, this has been Hawk Talk.
Speaker 1: You're listening to Hawk Talk with former Seahawks wide receiver Michael Bumpus. Powered by Seahawks.com. Now, here's your host, Nassau Chobie.
