Dre: Speaking of not letting people and not letting things happen, we decided that this episode was only for the fans of undefeated teams. So unfortunately, Rod didn't qualify. He'll be back next week with us. but no, I'm doing well, man. I I'm doing well.
Tyree Holland: Yeah.
Dre: Nah, Ry'll be back next week, man. He he had some things he had to had to attend to and he'll be back with us next week. But
Tyree Holland: Most definitely.
Dre: I'm still excited to get into this episode, man. Me and you, we we about to get through it. Yeah.
Tyree Holland: Yeah, man. Hey, shoot, we just getting started. Speaking of getting started, what is your biggest takeaways from college football and the NFL this past week?
Dre: mean my biggest NFL takeaway or college takeaway, I I will start there, is just that college football for for all of the conversations we have in the off season, right? For all of the court cases, for all of this realignment talk and just all of the off the field stuff that only matters in the off season. College football is still college football at the end of the day. Like, I still get that feeling. Like Josh Pate, I I I've seen him say it on his show before. Like, do you still get that feeling on game day? And I do. I I still get that same feeling watching a a team like Oregon lose to Oklahoma State. Like That that has to make you you feel some type of way if you if you're a fan of college football, man. Games like that. what was your biggest takeaway?
Tyree Holland: When it comes to, you know, college football, my major takeaway is, ironically you mentioned that, is this past weekend's thirty-nine to thirty-one upset, Oklahoma State beating the Oregon Ducks. You know, shout out to a superstar performance by my guy, quarterback Drew Mestermaker, throwing for three hundred and seventeen yards, two touchdowns, and running for another one hundred and nine yards. the biggest standout moment of of the weekend as far as that game goes is him jumping over literally multiple defenders to get the game ceiling touchdown
Dre: I'm kinda surprised that you didn't use this opportunity to to speak about Michigan and and and and how Whittingham was able to fight through and get his guys get his guys a tough tough win against a Oklahoma team. But we'll we'll get there in a little bit. But I I
Tyree Holland: You will bring that up, Andre. Really, Andre. I was trying to, you know, cause I got family ties to Oklahoma. You ain't had to do them guys like that. Come on, Andre. But I know you have to be messy. You had to be messy, bro.
Dre: Hey, I mean I had to bring it up, man. I had to bring it up. But no, seriously, I another takeaway I had from watching that game, what the media and what social media tries to tell you that Alabama is, that's exactly
Tyree Holland: Mm.
Dre: what Oregon is right now.
Tyree Holland: Ooh, how so, Andre?
Dre: I mean, don't they don't they say that we're soft and and we lack that edge and we're unprepared and we're not ready to play and just all of these things that people say about us. Right now it kind of applies to Oregon. If you look at Oregon over the last five games, it it hasn't been great. Now granted, some of those against playoff teams and also like i it you you can't really compare blowouts to Indiana because we've We both got stomped by Indiana. But
Tyree Holland: Boy.
Dre: the start even to the season that people assumed Alabama would have is the start of the season that Oregon is having. I mean, you you go down to the wire with Boise State, you barely get out of the air alive, and then you turn around and the next week you lose to Oklahoma State with a first year
Tyree Holland: Yeah.
Dre: head coach, with a quarterback that's making what his Fourteenth start, like as much as I like Mestermaker and you like Mestermaker, he didn't even start in high school.
Tyree Holland: Yeah.
Dre: Right, like so we're talking about a very inexperienced quarterback still and you lost that game. Like i i if you if I'm an organ fan th right now, I'm concerned. Cause you're loaded, you you brought all this talent back, you're supposed to be natty or bust this year. And to start the season, it just looks like a bust. It doesn't look like they have any natty aspirations.
Tyree Holland: The to be honest with you, Arnj.
Dre: But it's still early, so it is early, so it it could definitely still change and I mean it's college football, crazy things happen, i. e. Michigan. But go
Tyree Holland: Yeah.
Dre: ahead, Tyree.
Tyree Holland: Yeah, man. my whole takeaway from the game is like when you really truly think about it, the makeup of the team. If I'm not tripping, Andre, they have a new offensive coordinator over there at Oregon and a new defensive coordinator, correct? Correct me if I'm wrong. it takes a long time to, you know, to connect as a team when you have nothing but new on both sides of ball. That could g be just me, but but at the same time that's not an excuse either because you brought back all this talent from last year, darn near the same players and still, you know, laid an egg against, Oklahoma State, which is a shame, and apparently, words on the tea leave or Twitter, you know, on the bird app, Phil Knight had to come down and talk to the team. have you heard that?
Dre: Yeah, I I wouldn't be surprised. All of that money he's put into that program. It's been reported that that roster is worth over f over forty million. Like, yeah. If if if I'm Uncle Phil, I I'm coming down to the locker room too, 'cause like what are y'all doing?
Tyree Holland: Yeah.
Dre: Y'all playing in my face at this point.
Tyree Holland: one of Uncle Phil's main goals was just to win the natty. He done accomplished some tremendous things in the in his life. And you know, Uncle Phil was in his nineties, man. Andre, what's your take on that? Do you think that's a realistic goal? Or no? You know, Oregon can win the national championship, To meet Uncle Phil's standards.
Dre: I mean anything can still happen. But you know what they say that that O stands for in that logo.
Tyree Holland: What it stands for, Andre, let me know.
Dre: Hey, no natties, man. They got a hundred jerseys and no natties. Like at some point, you gotta show me. And they can show me this year still.
Tyree Holland: okay.
Dre: They can still, to be clear, they can still show me this year. Like I I mean, we're both Bama fans. We saw a couple years ago everybody count out
Tyree Holland: Yeah.
Dre: us after we lost to Texas in week two. And then we almost won the national championship. Right. Like I I get it almost isn't good
Tyree Holland: Yeah, and then last
Dre: enough, but we were still a damn good football team after that. Even last year with Florida State, Same concept. So the season isn't indicative of one game, but the thing is, this has kind of been back-to-back performances that have been underwhelming. So my concern meter is going up if I'm an Oregon fan. Or if I'm Uncle Phil. My my concern meter is is is pretty high right now. I don't even want to have a conversation about this. I just want to leave this question just in case anybody wants to answer this down in the comments, or maybe we'll come back to it in a future episode. But could Dan Lanning just be the West Coast Dabble Sweeney?
Tyree Holland: my god. No, you didn't, Andre. No, you didn't.
Dre: Coordinator merchant, I'm just saying
Tyree Holland: Yeah.
Dre: I you know what, that that's a story for another day. But but go ahead. Go ahead, Tyree.
Tyree Holland: You know, you what was your takeaway from the NFL this past weekend, Andre?
Dre: of the New York football giants are back. w we we played physical bully ball. do you know that the Cowboys had only two possessions in the second half of that football game? And two possessions is the least amount of possessions that a team has had since going back to at least nineteen ninety one. in the second half of a football game. We absolutely dominated. Th two
Tyree Holland: No way, just two possessions? Just two possessions? That's crazy.
Dre: they they had the ball for I I wanna say nine minutes, maybe less than that. It might have been eight minutes and like fifty seconds or something like that. In the whole second half. Now, granted, they scored on both of those possessions, but they couldn't get off the field on defense. So it looks like to me the New York football Giants are back. So I I'm feeling great right now as a Giants fan. I think things are looking up. People gonna have to start respecting my quarterback, not just talking about a blue ten all the time. And and I'm excited. Yeah, well defense, I don't know. Work in progress. And speaking about defense is being a work in progress, good brother. Hey, man, I I know I see what I
Tyree Holland: You you ain't have to do me like that.
Dre: I see what Ben Johnson offense did, but I mean that defense, good Lord.
Tyree Holland: man, my main takeaways from the NFL, Andre, you would do that. But one of my favorite quotes I was talking to my friends that were Bear fans, and then also I was shopping up with Andre on the side a couple days ago about ironically, yeah, Monday. Yeah, Monday, I was having that conversation talking about the Bears putting up 59 points. I was joking around. Have you guys ever seen a bear with an AK? It's ugly now, man. It can get ugly. But speaking of more brighter note other than the defense.
Dre: Just like that defense.
Tyree Holland: I love I love my I love my Bears, but you know, you you telling the truth, man. That's nothing but the truth. But Ben Johnson, Caleb Williams, and the Chicago Bears had a tremendous season opener, dropping fifty nine points on the Carolina Panthers in a fifty nine to thirty seven victory with five hundred and fifty two total yards, eight total touchdowns, six rushing touchdowns and two passing touchdowns looking tremendous through the air or on the ground. The main takeaway from this game is that the defense needs to improve and the Bears must clean up on penalties. Also, my other takeaway is: come on, ladies and gentlemen, The Cleveland Browns need to stop the nonsense and start Shador Sanders,
Dre: Mean look, start Shador, start Dylan Gabriel, start Deshaun Watson, hell, start you and me. What they need is to just tank this season and get a real legitimate quarterback in that organization. Because they don't have one right now. But you know who does?
Tyree Holland: Cool.
Dre: The New York Football Giants with Jackson Dark. But outside of us, another takeaway. Tell you a quarterback that that's kind of concerning me right now is Drake May.
Tyree Holland: Ooh.
Dre: Last five games haven't looked great. Now, granted, he's been playing against some of the better defenses in the NFL in that five-game span, but also we're talking about a guy that was put on the pedestal of potentially being the MVP last season. finished as a runner-up even. So I I feel like it's kind of fair to grade him on the scale of of going up against those elite guys. And it just hasn't looked good at all. Like he he's turned the ball over in the last five games eleven times compared to seven touchdowns.
Tyree Holland: Yeah, that's not a pretty stat line at all. At all.
Dre: It it it's it it it it's reminded me of Daniel Jones at his worst at times. And then that interception he threw Against the Seahawks in the opening game is unacceptable. You you can never throw that interception. I think that Drake May was overwhelmed and I'm gonna keep my eye on him because He doesn't look great. Now a quarterback that did start to look not great, but good at least as the game progressed was Tyler Shuck. Did you get a
Tyree Holland: week
Dre: chance to see Tyler Shuck?
Tyree Holland: yeah, man. he he was tearing it up, man. I was chopping up with a couple of my good friends that lives in New Orleans, we was texting on the side. I said, Yo, your defense is phenomenal, but you guys are on the field too much and it's gonna tire your defense out. And Tyler Shuck was you know, the terrible turnovers and stuff. And and Andre, as wh as watching the game progress, I noticed a shift happen. like he started clicking on all cylinders, the offense started moving. Tyler Shuff can grow, my takeaway from that game is since you guys were like struggling and then made that comeback and force overtime, my whole opinion is you should have gone for it in regulation, why wait, you know, Andre, in your opinion, if If you were struggling the whole game and then you tied it up at the end, kick the field goal to go for What is your takeaway on that? Cause to me, I felt like you should have just gone for it. Cause you're you're playing with house money at that point.
Dre: I mean I get that to an extent, but I think you also kind of you gotta i it depends on the game. You gotta have a feel for the game, right? Because if it's a game like let's say it's just for an example, you're down twenty eight to three.
Tyree Holland: Lord have mercy. You could he not here, man. Come on, man. You ain't gotta do Riley Deck.
Dre: It's and some I d I just I'm I'm sorry. I you down twenty-eight to three and and then just somehow you you happen to tie the game up where you get to twenty seven twenty-eight, right? And it's
Tyree Holland: Mm-hmm.
Dre: it's two seconds left in the football game. I could go for two, but all the pressure is on you. Like you said, I'm playing with house money. So me kicking this field goal keeps my foot on your neck. I'm gonna make you keep executing under maximum pressure. So me, I don't mind going for the field or for the extra point and then playing for the win in overtime. But my pro my issue usually comes with how coaches approach it. Like I feel like and obviously I'm not a coach, right? But I I feel like They get too conservative a lot of the times. And are approaching it from a a protective standpoint. Like they're trying to protect the lead and just not mess things up. And I feel like when you approach it that way, you kind of start to mess up and things start to go wrong. Right? Like that's why I love what what Ben Johnson did. Like I joke about your defense giving up what it did. Yeah, I mean it's a concern.
Tyree Holland: Yeah.
Dre: Something to look at, but but your coach did keep his foot on their neck all night. Right? And I like that. Like I like coaches that'll do that. Like I think Mike McDonald does the same thing. Like I don't think he really lets up much. That's what I want to see from coaches. So if you're approaching it from that standpoint and you then play for the win in overtime and you just lose. Like I I I don't have a problem with the decision to to play for the tie in regulation and and push it to overtime.
Tyree Holland: the spotlight college football game of the week. LSU versus O Miss. Who you got winning,
Dre: Delane train. man LSU versus Ole Miss Kiffen versus Pete Golden. I think this is gonna be a good football game. This is gonna be one like I hope at least. I hope this isn't just another hype game that it that lets us down. But this game should be one of those games where you can tell your grandkids about in the future. Like you remember watching this game. Like it this game should be absolute cinema. Honestly. Like you have Levitt on one side with the Dylan kid, he looks really good at at running back. But on the other side, you have two potential Heisman candidates. And then Blake Baker has a really good defense, but this is Pete Golding. And you're going into Ole Miss, right? Like I think that this game is it the emotions behind it and just everything that comes with it. I I think this game is gonna be One of those can't miss classic football games. At least that's my hope for it. What about two?
Tyree Holland: Who do you got winning though?
Dre: See it's tough because I respect what Pete Golden has going on over there and the talent he has, but Kiffin, he loves to play the villain. I think he would love nothing more than in this situation to go in there and spoil their night, obviously.
Tyree Holland: Ha ha ha.
Dre: Give me LSU. By a touchdown.
Tyree Holland: Okay.
Dre: But you.
Tyree Holland: LSU versus Omis. All eyes are on head coach Lane Kiffin returning to Omis after leaving last season, adding high stakes drama to a already wild SEC rival. LSU has the defensive edge to shut down big plays and and also has the special offense they need to capture the mass win. With all that being said, I got LSU.
Dre: if you're old miss
Tyree Holland: Mm-hmm.
Dre: You have the home field and that crowd is gonna be rocking in that stadium. Sam Levitt, like he's played in some tough environments, but that environment, I don't know if he's played in in something like that before. You don't think that that could affect them potentially?
Tyree Holland: I think that can affect him 'cause watching last week's game, S Sam was forcing a lot of plays, wanted to have every play be a big play where he throwed like a pick six or so. I think Him and Lane are d then hit the film room to adjust. And I think the whole LSU team is gonna unite behind their head coach. Even though I didn't like how Lane handled himself leaving Omis, how did you feel about him, how he handled that situation?
Dre: I mean, I he did a terrible job of everything really in that process. Like from communicating it to his team and when he left to trying to still play the good guy by saying, they just won't let me coach and I I think Lane handled it completely wrong. I mean, but that I don't think that's a secret to anybody. Are there people out there that
Tyree Holland: Yeah, without a doubt, man.
Dre: disagree with that?
Tyree Holland: Of course, man. You know, nobody ever universally agrees on any t topic, but also connecting that question I asked you, ladies and gentlemen, you guys should definitely check out the many lives of Lane on the ESPN app, man. It was a tremendous watch to see the psyche of Lane Kiffin like actually looking at things from a hindsight of, what did I did wrong on each coach journey, and then also what led him to Going to LSU, ironically. So that's a good watch in my opinion, Andre. When you get a chance, I don't know if you watched it or not, but that's a definitely a good watch.
Dre: No, I have to check it out when I have some time. I haven't seen it yet, but I'll definitely watch it here soon and w maybe we can do a review of it afterwards.
Tyree Holland: Actually dedicate a good hour and just get some popcorn, it's very interesting to see Lane the man, That that's what I took away from the documentary. Like he's a complicated guy, but actually seeing a little glimpse into who he is as a person. You know, lane the father and then also lane the coach and then also lane the son because you know the legend you know having a legendary coach as a father, man, that can be a whole different task in itself. But speaking in task of itself, man, any final thoughts or takeaways, Andre, before we head out?
Dre: Yeah, man. I mean, well you s you just told the people to sit down and and and watch. Make sure that you also subscribe to the show. And if you missed it, check out the last episode. Get your popcorn ready and hit that notification bell so you don't miss any more episodes in the future.
Tyree Holland: that was Andre. My name is Tyree. This is Gridiron Views. Episode 11 is just getting started. More life, more blessings.
