ABOUT THIS EPISODE
We explore the hidden tunnels beneath Milan's Sforza Castle, designed by Leonardo da Vinci and only recently discovered in 2025 using ground-penetrating radar technology. While working as a military engineer for Ludovico Sforza, da Vinci created secret passageways connecting important Renaissance landmarks that remained hidden for over 500 years.
• Leonardo applied to work for Ludovico Sforza primarily as a military engineer, listing artistic abilities as almost an afterthought
• The Sforza Castle evolved from military fortress to palace to museum, housing many Renaissance treasures
• Da Vinci designed the Sala della Asse with an elaborate ceiling of intertwined mulberry trees symbolizing prudence and productivity
• Researchers discovered actual tunnels that match Leonardo's sketches, including one connecting the castle to Santa Maria delle Grazie where The Last Supper was painted
• A mysterious sealed chamber was detected beneath the castle that has not been accessed since the 1490s
• Renaissance Milan was filled with political intrigue, spies, and dangerous power struggles alongside artistic innovation
• The castle has accumulated numerous ghost stories and legends of hidden treasure over its 500+ year history

00:00:08.731 --> 00:00:19.533
Hey folks, welcome back to Grandpa's Hymn, the podcast, where we wander through the dusty attic of history, shine a flashlight in the corners and say, huh, would you look at that?
00:00:19.533 --> 00:00:29.091
But first I want to begin with a quick shout out to some young friends of mine who I had the pleasure of recording the other day the Stacy Middle School Choir.
00:00:29.091 --> 00:00:31.167
Hey guys, you sound great.
00:00:31.167 --> 00:00:34.429
Today we're going underground, literally.
00:00:34.429 --> 00:00:42.713
I'm talking hidden tunnels, renaissance secrets, military scheming and one suspiciously smart guy with a beard.
00:00:42.713 --> 00:00:49.106
And no, it's not me, it's not a Dungeons and Dragons campaign, it's Leonardo da Vinci.
00:00:49.106 --> 00:01:01.210
We're headed to Milan, italy, and more specifically to a castle that's been hiding some of the most fascinating secrets right under people's feet the legendary Sforza Castle.
00:01:01.210 --> 00:01:09.727
And, folks, when I say this place is stuffed with stories, I mean it's like my grandkids after Halloween, absolutely crammed.
00:01:09.727 --> 00:01:23.192
We're going to pull some of those stories out, dust them off and see what happens when a military fortress, a renaissance genius and five centuries of secrets all meet up under one roof, or under one floor, as it turns out.
00:01:23.192 --> 00:01:29.822
Under one roof or under one floor, as it turns out.
00:01:29.822 --> 00:01:30.325
Let's set the stage.
00:01:30.344 --> 00:01:31.347
The year is 1450.
00:01:31.347 --> 00:02:02.870
Milan is doing its renaissance thing inventing, painting, warring and a big shot mercenary named Francisco Sforza decides to build a little something for himself, and by little I mean a sprawling brick fortress that looks like it was designed by someone who said make it big enough to survive any angry army and also store enough cheese for the winter, because what's the point of surviving a siege if you're out of Parmesan Sforza Castle or Castello Sforzesco if you're trying to impress somebody over espresso?
00:02:02.870 --> 00:02:05.795
Was originally a military fortress.
00:02:05.795 --> 00:02:13.960
It later became a palace, a barracks, a museum and apparently a really fancy hiding spot for secret tunnels.
00:02:13.960 --> 00:02:26.508
This place has seen more drama than a telenovela on Fast Forward the Black Plague, plague, napoleon, spanish Habsburgs, austrian Habsburg.
00:02:26.508 --> 00:02:32.092
Basically, if you wore a sash and started a war, you probably had a key to the place.
00:02:32.092 --> 00:02:36.056
It's been rebuilt, remodeled, repurposed.
00:02:36.056 --> 00:02:49.704
It's basically the Madonna of castles Always reinventing, occasionally controversial and somehow still standing.
00:02:49.704 --> 00:02:55.441
But despite all the changes, it still got the bones of the original Sforza's vision Strength, prestige and enough brick to rebuild Rome twice.
00:02:55.441 --> 00:03:08.134
That brick may look basic, but it was bougie back in the day by the time Ludovico Sforza, aka Ludovico Il Moro, came around.
00:03:08.575 --> 00:03:13.569
The castle was also a symbol of wealth, power and don't mess with Milan.
00:03:13.569 --> 00:03:15.479
Now I know what you're thinking, lynn?
00:03:15.479 --> 00:03:18.606
How many stories can one castle possibly have?
00:03:18.606 --> 00:03:25.668
Buddy, this place had a moat, a drawbridge, a tower built so high, the pigeons filed a noise complaint.
00:03:25.668 --> 00:03:28.681
Sounds pretty cool, and get this.
00:03:28.681 --> 00:03:32.651
There was an entire wing just for tournaments and parties.
00:03:32.651 --> 00:03:35.748
Basically, renaissance Topgolf.
00:03:35.748 --> 00:03:42.032
Except instead of driving range balls you're jousting and instead of nachos it's boar stew.
00:03:42.920 --> 00:03:45.588
You ever hear the one about the Suertzes family pet lion?
00:03:45.588 --> 00:03:50.790
Yeah, apparently, ludovico had a soft spot for big cats.
00:03:50.790 --> 00:03:54.587
Kept one roaming around the courtyard to intimidate guests.
00:03:54.587 --> 00:03:56.012
Forget guard dogs.
00:03:56.012 --> 00:03:59.169
This guy had a little power move on four legs.
00:03:59.169 --> 00:04:07.990
So when we say the castle wore many hats, we mean crowns, helmets, berets and maybe one pointy jester cap on Tuesdays.
00:04:07.990 --> 00:04:17.975
Trust me, you could drop a party of level 1 adventurers in here and half would straight up fail their perception checks before they ever hit the drawbridge.
00:04:17.975 --> 00:04:29.403
One minute you're storming the courtyard, the next you're bumping elbows with an eight-foot statue that spoiler alert might have been guarding a plus-two sword all along.
00:04:29.403 --> 00:04:31.807
Let's talk about the hire that changed everything.
00:04:32.689 --> 00:04:42.023
Leonardo da Vinci, in his early 30s, shows up in Milan like the world's most overqualified intern.
00:04:42.023 --> 00:04:43.064
The man hadn't even painted the Last Supper yet.
00:04:43.064 --> 00:04:46.071
He was not world famous, not yet, but he had ideas.
00:04:46.071 --> 00:04:48.122
Oh boy, did he have ideas.
00:04:48.122 --> 00:04:52.911
Now, ludovico Sforza wasn't exactly looking to redecorate it.
00:04:52.911 --> 00:04:55.382
He wanted military muscle.
00:04:55.382 --> 00:05:00.494
Milan was sandwiched between rival city-states with armies and appetites.
00:05:00.494 --> 00:05:05.711
So Leonardo did what every smart job applicant does he tailored his resume.
00:05:05.711 --> 00:05:13.182
He wrote a 10-point letter to Ludovico, and here's the kicker Nine of the 10 points had nothing to do with art.
00:05:13.182 --> 00:05:16.894
For example, I can build indestructible bridges.
00:05:16.894 --> 00:05:20.523
I can design catapults that'll knock your enemy's socks off.
00:05:20.523 --> 00:05:29.805
I've got ideas for armored tanks pulled by oxen and at the bottom, oh, and if you need a mural or a statue, I guess I could do that too.
00:05:29.805 --> 00:05:35.264
So Leonardo shows up with a resume that would make any dungeon master go hold up.
00:05:35.264 --> 00:05:39.874
Did this wizard just declare proficiency in siegecraft and painting?
00:05:39.874 --> 00:05:43.843
Nine out of ten bullet points are basically I can build a tank.
00:05:43.843 --> 00:05:48.949
Then there's one lonely line oh, and, by the way, I guess I can do art.
00:05:48.949 --> 00:05:57.137
It's like a rogue handing you a letter that says I have expertise in lockpicking, stealth and probably painting your dungeon murals too.
00:05:58.360 --> 00:06:01.963
Leonardo undersold the Mona Lisa like it was a side hustle.
00:06:01.963 --> 00:06:03.706
Elisa like it was a side hustle.
00:06:03.706 --> 00:06:09.711
Ludovico, who clearly liked a bit of flair with his firepower, said sure, let's give this guy a shot.
00:06:09.711 --> 00:06:21.723
And boom, leonardo was hired, not as a painter, not as a philosopher, but as a military engineer.
00:06:21.723 --> 00:06:23.387
Imagine if Einstein had gotten famous because he built a really good fence.
00:06:23.406 --> 00:06:25.713
Now, what did da Vinci do with this opportunity?
00:06:25.713 --> 00:06:29.064
Well, in true Leonardo fashion, he dabbled.
00:06:29.064 --> 00:06:41.350
He sketched blueprints, he designed hydraulic systems, he invented a type of revolving bridge, and somewhere in between all that, he started dreaming up tunnels beneath the very walls he worked to protect.
00:06:41.350 --> 00:06:42.956
Was he paranoid?
00:06:42.956 --> 00:06:49.463
Maybe, but in Renaissance Italy, paranoia was just common sense with better shoes.
00:06:49.463 --> 00:06:56.899
So what do you do with a genius like Leonardo, who can't sit still and treats blueprints like sketchbook doodles?
00:06:58.226 --> 00:07:10.567
You give him a room, a really big one, and that room is called Sala della Asse or Room of the Boards, but it's always way more interesting than it sounds.
00:07:10.567 --> 00:07:21.232
It's tucked inside one of the towers of the castle, and Leonardo was asked to decorate it not with saints, not with battles, but with trees.
00:07:21.232 --> 00:07:34.237
Yes, the whole ceiling and parts of the walls are covered with intertwining mulberry trees, twisting branches, golden cords and a trunk design that climbs like ivy on royal steroids.
00:07:34.237 --> 00:07:35.757
Why mulberries?
00:07:35.757 --> 00:07:44.800
Well, they were a symbol of prudence and productivity, a favorite of Ludovico who was trying to look both wise and economically clever.
00:07:44.800 --> 00:07:51.202
The mulberry was like the Renaissance version of saying we're good with our taxes and we have strong roots.
00:07:51.202 --> 00:07:53.603
But it wasn't just a pretty mural.
00:07:53.603 --> 00:08:07.177
This room may have been part of Leonardo's broader architectural vision Hidden airflow vents, geometric floor plans and possibly access points to other parts of the castle In true da Vinci fashion.
00:08:07.177 --> 00:08:10.086
Every leaf probably had a second purpose.
00:08:11.307 --> 00:08:16.358
Leonardo's Sala della Asse isn't just a mural of twisting mulberry trees.
00:08:16.358 --> 00:08:20.975
It's basically a built-in trap room waiting for your D&D party.
00:08:20.975 --> 00:08:29.036
Picture it you think you're entering a comfy chamber, but hidden vents hiss like a gelatinous cube, stirring in the dark.
00:08:29.036 --> 00:08:37.570
You need to roll a DC-15 investigation check to make it through without triggering some ridiculous Renaissance era arrow trap.
00:08:37.570 --> 00:08:48.979
The room was rediscovered centuries later under layers of plaster, because apparently some 18th century decorator looked at it and said nah, needs more beige.
00:08:48.979 --> 00:08:52.251
Thankfully, restore's brought it back to life.
00:08:52.251 --> 00:08:58.970
Today, the Soledela Ase stands as one of the most complete surviving da Vinci environments.
00:08:58.970 --> 00:09:02.038
Not just a painting, but an experience.
00:09:02.038 --> 00:09:08.677
And hey, what better symbol for Leonardo's brain than a room full of roots, knots and twisting connections?
00:09:08.677 --> 00:09:14.455
So now we jump ahead, way ahead, the year 2025.
00:09:15.116 --> 00:09:19.765
The heroes A team of researchers from the Polytechnic University of Milan.
00:09:19.765 --> 00:09:33.070
These folks were not wearing armor or carrying swords, nope, they showed up with ground-penetrating radar and laptops that looked like they could launch a satellite or order a cappuccino maybe both.
00:09:33.070 --> 00:09:41.255
Their mission To see if Da Vinci's tunnel sketches were the real deal, or just the renaissance version of doodling in a meeting.
00:09:41.255 --> 00:09:45.429
And wouldn't you know it, those scribbles Not just fantasy.
00:09:45.429 --> 00:09:52.177
When that radar went beep, beep, beeping, it was like the archaeologist just rolled a nat 20 on investigation.
00:09:52.177 --> 00:09:55.394
Suddenly, they revealed a hidden corridor.
00:09:55.394 --> 00:09:59.749
Think of it as an uncovered secret door in a D&D dungeon.
00:09:59.749 --> 00:10:06.770
Only here, instead of goblins, is five centuries of Italian intrigue waiting to ambush you with history lessons.
00:10:06.770 --> 00:10:17.578
They found them Real stone tunnels hidden beneath the castle, some broad, some narrow, some nearly caved in, but all very, very real.
00:10:18.585 --> 00:10:22.193
It was the kind of discovery that sends historians into a frenzy.
00:10:22.193 --> 00:10:25.227
I'm talking squealing in the archives.
00:10:25.227 --> 00:10:29.758
Knock over a coffee cup of excitement, and here's where it gets wild.
00:10:29.758 --> 00:10:42.235
One of those tunnels appears to connect Sforza Castle with the Basilica of Santa Maria delle Grazie Yep, the same place where da Vinci painted the Last Supper.
00:10:42.235 --> 00:10:59.350
So theoretically, the Duke could have snuck out of the castle, taken a midnight stroll underground, popped out near the chapel, paid his respects and been home before curfew, assuming he didn't mind tight spaces or the occasional rat holding a candle.
00:11:00.412 --> 00:11:02.496
Well, what were these tunnels actually for?
00:11:02.496 --> 00:11:09.466
Were they secret escape routes for covert military movement, or midnight wine deliveries with no tipping required?
00:11:09.466 --> 00:11:12.989
Honestly, your guess is as good as mine.
00:11:12.989 --> 00:11:14.029
But the design?
00:11:14.029 --> 00:11:20.275
Pure da Vinci Carved hallways, sloped floors and sneaky little air vents.
00:11:20.275 --> 00:11:24.620
Like Home Alone, but with more limestone and fewer paint cans.
00:11:25.400 --> 00:11:26.501
Now here's the kicker.
00:11:26.501 --> 00:11:31.365
The research team didn't just stop at cool.
00:11:31.365 --> 00:11:31.807
We found a tunnel.
00:11:31.807 --> 00:11:38.720
No, they started building a digital twin, a full 3D model of the castle and its underground maze.
00:11:38.720 --> 00:11:47.559
So one day you'll be able to tour Da Vinci's tunnel system using just your phone, in your pajamas, with a sandwich in one hand.
00:11:47.559 --> 00:11:55.734
Leonardo would have been amazed or terrified, possibly both, especially if you showed him your TikTok afterwards.
00:11:55.734 --> 00:11:59.032
All right, we've been digging in the dirt.
00:11:59.032 --> 00:12:00.515
Now let's come up for air.
00:12:01.666 --> 00:12:10.275
Let's talk about what life was really like up top in Renaissance Milan and, spoiler alert, it wasn't all art and architecture.
00:12:10.275 --> 00:12:12.993
Life in the city was a beautiful mess.
00:12:12.993 --> 00:12:20.673
If you were rich, you had silk palaces and dinner parties where someone might have a trained parrot that quoted Cicero.
00:12:20.673 --> 00:12:26.894
If you were poor, you had mud, market fish and a high chance of getting your teeth stolen.
00:12:26.894 --> 00:12:28.700
That's not a metaphor.
00:12:28.700 --> 00:12:31.287
Tooth theft was real.
00:12:31.287 --> 00:12:33.250
Dentists were not a thing.
00:12:33.250 --> 00:12:39.428
Yet If you had good teeth and someone needed them, well, welcome to Renaissance capitalism.
00:12:40.309 --> 00:12:41.692
Now let's talk fashion.
00:12:41.692 --> 00:12:49.052
Milan was a trendsetter Huge sleeves, bright colors, hats, tall enough to get their own tax bracket.
00:12:49.052 --> 00:12:54.570
Everyone wanted to look like royalty, even the butchers, the svortzes.
00:12:54.570 --> 00:12:57.277
They didn't just lead, they dazzled.
00:12:57.277 --> 00:13:00.293
If your outfit didn't sparkle, were you even a duke?
00:13:00.293 --> 00:13:10.138
The city was noisy, busy and slightly paranoid, because behind every courtyard fountain and every frescoed wall was someone watching.
00:13:10.138 --> 00:13:16.077
Spies weren't just for the battlefield, they were in taverns, churches, even bakeries.
00:13:16.077 --> 00:13:20.149
And let's not forget poison, the official drink of political drama.
00:13:20.149 --> 00:13:21.874
Want to unseat a rival?
00:13:21.874 --> 00:13:26.114
Forget duels, just slip something spicy into the saffron risotto.
00:13:27.225 --> 00:13:33.034
Power in Milan was like a renaissance soap opera Betrayals, backroom deals, arranged marriages.
00:13:33.034 --> 00:13:39.370
Honestly, you could make a season of Game of Thrones just out of the Sforza family tree.
00:13:39.370 --> 00:13:43.278
Still, despite the chaos, people loved their city.
00:13:43.278 --> 00:13:52.351
The Mianese built schools, theaters and even experimented with public sanitation Not great sanitation, but hey, it was a start.
00:13:52.351 --> 00:14:05.966
And in the middle of all this lived our buddy Leonardo, absorbing it all like a sponge, sketching people plants, armor, birds, crossbows, crankshafts probably all in the same afternoon.
00:14:05.966 --> 00:14:13.586
The renaissance was not clean, it wasn't quiet, but it was alive, and Milan was right at the center.
00:14:15.272 --> 00:14:25.874
All right, folks, time to dim the lights, cue the thunder and get a little spooky, because you can't have a 500-year-old castle without a few lingering spirits and whispered legends.
00:14:25.874 --> 00:14:31.932
Right, let's start with the ghost of Bona of Savoy, ludovico Sforza's mom.
00:14:31.932 --> 00:14:38.937
Now Bona had it rough Political plots, court betrayal, exiled twice and no decent spa days ever.
00:14:38.937 --> 00:14:46.412
According to legend, she still wanders the halls of Svortz's castle, especially the long corridors, after dark.
00:14:46.412 --> 00:14:50.355
People say they've heard heels clicking on stone when no one's there.
00:14:50.355 --> 00:14:55.437
Others swear they've seen a woman in velvet robes sighing dramatically near the North Tower.
00:14:55.437 --> 00:15:00.910
Honestly, it sounds like she just wants someone to listen to her side of the story.
00:15:00.910 --> 00:15:09.094
I swear any first-level bard strolling through after dark would automatically get inspiration just for living to tell the tale.
00:15:09.094 --> 00:15:11.043
And you better believe.
00:15:11.043 --> 00:15:14.131
The passive perception on those walls is off the charts.
00:15:14.131 --> 00:15:15.644
And that's just one.
00:15:15.644 --> 00:15:20.692
There's talk of a monk-shaped shadow that appears in the courtyard during thunderstorms.
00:15:20.692 --> 00:15:25.344
No face, no feet, just the outline of someone watching.
00:15:25.344 --> 00:15:33.908
One guard reportedly quit after seeing it twice in the same week, which, I gotta say, is a pretty good excuse to skip night shifts.
00:15:34.951 --> 00:15:35.673
On to the treasure.
00:15:35.673 --> 00:15:41.443
Oh yeah, rumors of hidden gold have floated through Mianese coffee shops for centuries.
00:15:41.443 --> 00:15:52.995
One story goes that Ludovico Sforza, sensing that things were about to go south politically, hid a massive stash of gold and valuables beneath the castle.
00:15:52.995 --> 00:15:59.921
Some say it was sealed in a secret chamber behind a false wall.
00:15:59.921 --> 00:16:00.442
That's never been found.
00:16:00.442 --> 00:16:12.173
Others believe da Vinci himself helped design the vault, not just to store riches but knowledge, like a renaissance hard drive full of blueprints, journals, maybe even a few inventions he never shared.
00:16:12.173 --> 00:16:26.648
And if you believe the real wild theories, some think one of the tunnels maybe the one they just discovered in 2025, was a decoy to mislead thieves.
00:16:26.648 --> 00:16:27.591
The real chamber, still untouched, still waiting.
00:16:27.591 --> 00:16:38.701
I don't know about you, but if I were designing a hiding spot, I'd definitely include a trick floor tile, a password in Latin and probably a really grumpy owl.
00:16:38.701 --> 00:16:49.330
Oh, and there are rumors of a hidden library too A collection of banned books, secret correspondence and maybe an early draft of the Da Vinci Code.
00:16:49.330 --> 00:16:51.869
Okay, that last one's a joke, but barely.
00:16:52.960 --> 00:17:06.294
Whether you believe in ghosts or not, the fact remains the castle's history is full of gaps, empty rooms, sealed passages and little mysteries just waiting for someone curious or foolish enough to investigate.
00:17:06.294 --> 00:17:10.210
Just bring a lantern and maybe a back-up pair of socks.
00:17:10.210 --> 00:17:14.891
All right, my fellow castle crawlers, time to crawl back to the surface.
00:17:14.891 --> 00:17:22.750
We've uncovered a lot today History, mystery, art, engineering and a healthy dose of ghostly drama.
00:17:23.492 --> 00:17:27.727
So what's the takeaway from this long dive into the Bowsus Fort's castle?
00:17:27.727 --> 00:17:32.122
First, leonardo da Vinci was not just a painter.
00:17:32.122 --> 00:17:39.682
He was an architect, an inventor, a city planner and maybe even a part-time secret tunnel inspector.
00:17:39.682 --> 00:17:49.150
The guy saw possibilities everywhere in walls, in roots, in bricks and, yes, even below a castle floor.
00:17:49.150 --> 00:17:53.510
Second, Svortza Castle isn't just a building.
00:17:53.510 --> 00:18:00.807
It's a living, breathing artifact, full of stories still being told and some that have yet to be discovered.
00:18:00.807 --> 00:18:04.009
I mean, it took 500 years to find the tunnels.
00:18:04.009 --> 00:18:06.567
Who knows what's behind wall number two?
00:18:06.567 --> 00:18:12.853
Number three the Renaissance was not some sanitized, classy version of history.
00:18:12.853 --> 00:18:24.895
It was loud, it was risky, it was full of genius and nonsense, which frankly makes it pretty relatable of genius and nonsense, which frankly makes it pretty relatable.
00:18:24.935 --> 00:18:31.162
Now, before I let you go, I promised you one last twist, and here it is.
00:18:31.162 --> 00:18:33.346
One of the most intriguing things found in the 2025 scans wasn't a tunnel at all.
00:18:33.346 --> 00:18:45.144
It was what the researchers called a chamber anomaly, a perfectly square void, not on any map, map, not mentioned in any historical document, not accessible.
00:18:45.144 --> 00:18:45.907
Yet.
00:18:45.907 --> 00:18:54.333
They think it may be a sealed vault, possibly designed by Leonardo, possibly untouched since the late 1490s.
00:18:54.333 --> 00:18:57.779
Imagine the dungeon master leaning in Alright party.
00:18:57.779 --> 00:19:08.099
What do you do when you find a hidden vault beneath an ancient stone wall Spoiler?
00:19:08.099 --> 00:19:09.844
If you're not carrying a magic crowbar, you're in for a tough time Now.
00:19:09.844 --> 00:19:12.288
Will it be gold secret manuscripts, a very old wheel of parmesan?
00:19:12.288 --> 00:19:18.807
I don't know, but just knowing it's there, waiting, makes the castle more than just a museum.
00:19:18.807 --> 00:19:22.193
It makes it a puzzle, one we're still solving.
00:19:22.193 --> 00:19:30.991
And that, my friends, is what history is really all about Not just what we know, but what we don't, what we're still chasing.
00:19:31.961 --> 00:19:35.191
And before I close out this episode, listen to this story.
00:19:35.191 --> 00:19:42.148
This is one that, well, you just may have a hard time believing, but there are pictures to show that it really did happen.
00:19:42.148 --> 00:19:51.487
Have I got a doozy of a story for you?
00:19:51.487 --> 00:20:03.882
Picture this You're out on the disc golf course aiming for that sweet birdie on hole 11, and bam, a tiny hammerhead shark plops down right beside you like it's trying to play too.
00:20:03.882 --> 00:20:06.026
No, I'm not making this up.
00:20:06.026 --> 00:20:09.653
A shark fell from the sky onto a disc golf course.
00:20:09.653 --> 00:20:21.712
Stick around, because we're diving pun absolutely intended into exactly how an osprey, some feisty crows and an unsuspecting disc golfer ended up with a shark on their green.
00:20:22.619 --> 00:20:38.329
A couple of weeks ago in Myrtle Beach, south Carolina, specifically at the aptly named Splinter City Disc Golf Course, our main character, jonathan Marlowe, rolls up with his buddies, discs in hand, ready for some weekend fun.
00:20:38.329 --> 00:20:49.903
If you've never played disc golf, let me assure you it's like golf, only with frisbees and slightly fewer polo shirts.
00:20:49.903 --> 00:20:53.960
You toss your disc, try to sink it into one of those hanging baskets, then trek through brush and be thankful there are no sand traps to worry about.
00:20:53.960 --> 00:20:58.587
All very chill until nature decides to spice things up.
00:20:58.587 --> 00:21:02.773
So Jonathan is on hole 11, decides to spice things up.
00:21:02.773 --> 00:21:05.558
So Jonathan is on hole 11, gazing at his target.
00:21:05.558 --> 00:21:10.182
You know that lovely chain clinking basket.
00:21:10.201 --> 00:21:11.846
When he notices an osprey overhead, normally that's nothing to write home about.
00:21:11.846 --> 00:21:14.213
We've all seen birds cruising above minding their own business.
00:21:14.213 --> 00:21:18.406
But this particular osprey, it's carrying something in its talons.
00:21:18.406 --> 00:21:23.155
Jonathan thinks it's carrying something in its talons.
00:21:23.155 --> 00:21:25.519
Jonathan thinks cool, that's a nice catch.
00:21:25.519 --> 00:21:26.181
He squints up and wait for it.
00:21:26.181 --> 00:21:29.688
He sees the osprey being chased by not one but two very determined crows.
00:21:29.688 --> 00:21:32.554
And crows are not exactly known for their chivalry.
00:21:32.554 --> 00:21:35.809
They're bossy, mobbing little feathered tyrants.
00:21:35.809 --> 00:21:42.809
So these crows start dive-bombing the osprey and in the chaos the osprey drops its lunch.
00:21:42.809 --> 00:21:48.813
The thing comes tumbling down through the pine needles and thud right onto the forest floor.
00:21:48.813 --> 00:21:53.351
Jonathan's like it's probably just a fish or a random possum.
00:21:53.351 --> 00:22:00.463
Yeah, maybe a possum, but, friends, no amount of a possum hunting could prepare him for what he actually found.
00:22:00.463 --> 00:22:02.204
No amount of opossum hunting could prepare him for what he actually found.
00:22:02.224 --> 00:22:06.867
Jonathan locks eyes with get this, a small, dead hammerhead shark.
00:22:06.867 --> 00:22:13.752
A hammerhead shark In the woods On a disc golf course In South Carolina.
00:22:13.752 --> 00:22:19.537
If you're doing the middle math, it's basically a Sharknado cameo that nobody asked for.
00:22:19.537 --> 00:22:22.242
Now let's be real.
00:22:22.262 --> 00:22:24.080
Ospreys are wicked good fishermen.
00:22:24.080 --> 00:22:34.307
They can dive from 100 feet up at speeds nearly 50 miles per hour, tailons wide open, ready to snatch whatever slippery sea creature they spot.
00:22:34.307 --> 00:22:41.551
Normally that's a small fish trout, mackerel, maybe a catfish if you're lucky, but a baby hammerhead.
00:22:41.551 --> 00:22:44.799
That's like winning the weirdest lottery possible.
00:22:44.799 --> 00:22:51.509
It's rare enough for an osprey to catch a shark, let alone carry one all the way inland to a golf course.
00:22:51.509 --> 00:22:54.891
And why were those pesky crows so invested?
00:22:54.891 --> 00:22:57.647
Well, it's mobbing season in the spring.
00:22:58.385 --> 00:23:09.050
Crows, being social little beasts, team up to chase away predators hawks, owls and, yes, even ospreys, especially when baby birds or eggs might be nearby.
00:23:09.050 --> 00:23:16.540
So you've got Mr Osprey thinking he's got dinner sorted, zipping along and then two crows show up to ruin his lunchtime.
00:23:16.540 --> 00:23:30.050
They dive, bomb him, he drops the shark, and now that shark is doing more skydiving than a Navy SEAL trainee, I imagine the shark hit the ground thinking I knew I should have taken that left at Atlantis.
00:23:30.050 --> 00:23:34.943
Jonathan and his friends are standing there jaws on the ground.
00:23:34.943 --> 00:23:38.221
Holy moly, did that actually just happen?
00:23:38.221 --> 00:23:43.481
They walk over expecting maybe a bass or a catfish and nope, hammerhead shark.
00:23:43.481 --> 00:23:49.448
One friend says we gotta leave it here just in case Mr Osprey comes back to retrieve a snack.
00:23:49.448 --> 00:23:55.865
So they gently set the shark under a nearby tree, stand back and hope for nature to reclaim its own.
00:23:55.865 --> 00:24:00.114
Set the shark under a nearby tree, stand back and hope for nature to reclaim its own.
00:24:00.114 --> 00:24:06.182
Later Jonathan posted pictures on Facebook because, of course, if a shark falls from the sky and nobody posts on Facebook, did it really happen.
00:24:06.201 --> 00:24:11.883
Another disc golfer checks the post, swings by the course and finds the little hammerhead still under the tree.
00:24:11.883 --> 00:24:13.207
He's probably thinking.
00:24:13.207 --> 00:24:22.738
Mom always said don't forget your sunscreen, not don't forget to check for sharks between holes.
00:24:22.738 --> 00:24:24.141
Aside from being a fantastic cocktail party antidote, hey y'all.
00:24:24.141 --> 00:24:26.748
Once a shark fell on my head while I was playing disc golf.
00:24:27.634 --> 00:24:30.521
This tale reminds us just how wacky nature can be.
00:24:30.521 --> 00:24:41.410
You might stroll out to tee off expecting a mediocre round and end up face-to-face with a sea creature that typically hangs out in ocean waters, far from any piney trees.
00:24:41.410 --> 00:24:46.247
It's a beautiful, bizarre reminder that wildlife doesn't always play by our rules.
00:24:46.247 --> 00:24:52.022
So what's next for Little Hammerhead, hashtag SkyDrop2025?
00:24:52.022 --> 00:24:59.199
Johnny Osprey presumably flew off, likely back to Spring Maid Pier to find something a bit more manageable.
00:24:59.199 --> 00:25:05.877
The crows probably strutted around like victorious superheroes crowing about how they own the skies.
00:25:05.877 --> 00:25:12.156
And Jonathan, he's got a heck of a story to tell, plus some solid disc golf street cred.
00:25:12.718 --> 00:25:15.083
I once saw a shark land within five feet of me.
00:25:15.083 --> 00:25:18.209
That's a conversation starter if I ever heard one.
00:25:18.209 --> 00:25:21.984
Imagine future disc golfers on hole 11 whispering.
00:25:21.984 --> 00:25:24.923
Don't mind the tidy crater and the splatter marks.
00:25:24.923 --> 00:25:27.763
Just last year, a shark drop kicked the fairway.
00:25:27.763 --> 00:25:34.407
Honestly, I half expect someone to rig a mini shark statue next to the basket like a warning sign.
00:25:34.407 --> 00:25:37.878
Beware, random sharks may plummet at any moment.
00:25:38.761 --> 00:25:43.156
All right, friends, hope you enjoyed that little slice of only in the south in nature theater.
00:25:43.156 --> 00:25:47.106
Next time you're out in the woods, keep an eye on the skies, who knows?
00:25:47.106 --> 00:25:53.067
Maybe you'll catch a hawk diving after a picnic basket or a tiny shark on a kamikaze mission.
00:25:53.067 --> 00:25:59.464
Either way, snap a pic and post it online, because if it's not on social media, did it ever happen?
00:25:59.464 --> 00:26:09.722
And there you have it the true story of how a hammerhead shark fell out of the sky, dropped on a disc golf course and somebody managed to see it happen.
00:26:09.722 --> 00:26:12.654
Thanks for exploring with me today.
00:26:12.654 --> 00:26:17.968
If you liked this episode, tell a friend or a historian or your local owl.
00:26:17.968 --> 00:26:20.762
Don't forget to follow this podcast.
00:26:20.762 --> 00:26:23.765
I'm Lynn Dimmock and yep, grandpa's him.
00:26:23.765 --> 00:26:29.917
Until next time, keep wondering what's behind the next wall or what's going to fall out of the sky next.
00:26:29.917 --> 00:26:41.963
Thank you.
