00:00:03.759 --> 00:00:15.759
Hello everyone, this is Mark Davis, and I want to welcome you to the Gospel Explorations Podcast, where we gather together each week to take time to explore God's word to learn how we have to live in this present age.
00:00:18.879 --> 00:00:21.039
Let's jump into today's episode.
00:00:26.960 --> 00:00:30.160
Hello and welcome back to the Gospel Explorations Podcast.
00:00:30.239 --> 00:00:31.440
This is Mark Davis.
00:00:31.519 --> 00:00:34.799
I'm your host, and this is episode number 72.
00:00:35.280 --> 00:00:46.079
In our last episode together, we uh came down from the Mountain of Transfiguration into really what we would call the Valley of Need, and there we saw Jesus triumph where his disciples failed.
00:00:46.240 --> 00:00:56.960
Now, today in our passage, the tone shifts a little bit, and Jesus turns his disemp, and Jesus turns his disciples' attention forward, and that is to the cross.
00:00:57.200 --> 00:01:05.840
And then almost unexpectedly we see this moment that seems very small, even we might consider ordinary, and it's a conversation about paying taxes.
00:01:05.920 --> 00:01:08.239
But in it we need to be careful we don't miss something.
00:01:08.400 --> 00:01:15.280
Because in this simple moment, Jesus reveals something profound to us about who he is and what it is that he came to do.
00:01:15.519 --> 00:01:21.200
So if you have your Bibles, let's look at Matthew chapter 17, starting in verse number 22.
00:01:21.359 --> 00:01:33.760
We read these words, and while they abode in Galilee, Jesus said unto them, The Son of Man shall be betrayed into the hands of men, and they shall kill him, and the third day he should be raised again, and they were exceeding sorry.
00:01:34.000 --> 00:01:36.719
We see Jesus here speaking very plainly.
00:01:36.959 --> 00:01:43.760
The Son of Man should be betrayed, and they shall kill him, and the third day he will be risen again.
00:01:44.000 --> 00:01:53.519
Now this isn't vague or symbolic, it's a direct statement that he was going to be betrayed, he was going to be put to death, and he was going to rise again.
00:01:53.840 --> 00:01:57.280
And even in spite of this, the disciples don't understand.
00:01:57.519 --> 00:02:01.519
And the scriptures tell us that instead of feeling hope, they felt sorrow.
00:02:01.920 --> 00:02:05.519
Now, the question here is why would they feel this way?
00:02:05.680 --> 00:02:10.479
Well, it's because they heard the part about death, but they didn't grasp the part about the resurrection.
00:02:10.719 --> 00:02:13.280
And this happens more than once in the Gospels.
00:02:13.439 --> 00:02:19.360
Jesus repeatedly tells them what is coming, but it doesn't sink in until after it happens.
00:02:19.680 --> 00:02:26.800
In Luke 24, we're told that after the resurrection, the angels had to remind them, He is not here but is risen.
00:02:27.039 --> 00:02:28.960
Remember how he spake unto you.
00:02:29.120 --> 00:02:32.479
You see, they had heard it, but they had not understood.
00:02:32.800 --> 00:02:36.319
And if we're honest, I believe we can relate in the same way.
00:02:36.560 --> 00:02:43.439
We can hear truth, even clear truth, and we can still struggle to believe it when it doesn't fit our expectations.
00:02:43.919 --> 00:02:47.199
The disciples expected to find a conquering Messiah.
00:02:47.360 --> 00:02:50.080
They didn't expect him to be a suffering savior.
00:02:50.560 --> 00:02:57.759
But Jesus never speaks of the cross without also speaking of the resurrection, because death is not the end of the story.
00:02:58.000 --> 00:03:03.759
And even when we don't fully understand what God is doing, we have the hope that his promises remain true.
00:03:04.000 --> 00:03:07.120
Now the scene shifts somewhat to something very practical.
00:03:07.280 --> 00:03:09.520
Look at verses twenty-four and twenty-five.
00:03:09.759 --> 00:03:16.240
And when they were come to Capernaum, they that received tribute money came to Peter and said, Doth not your master pay tribute?
00:03:16.479 --> 00:03:17.840
He saith yes.
00:03:18.000 --> 00:03:22.719
And when he was coming to the house, Jesus prevented him, saying, What thinkest thou, Simon?
00:03:22.879 --> 00:03:28.159
Of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute, of their own children or of strangers?
00:03:28.560 --> 00:03:35.840
Now this tribute money was a temple tax, and every Jewish man was expected to contribute to the upkeep of the temple.
00:03:36.080 --> 00:03:39.599
It wasn't a Roman tax, it was a religious obligation.
00:03:39.919 --> 00:03:42.879
And Peter is asked, Does your master pay the temple tax?
00:03:43.120 --> 00:03:45.439
And without hesitation, Peter says yes.
00:03:45.680 --> 00:03:49.680
Then he walks into the house, and before he can even bring it up, Jesus speaks first.
00:03:50.000 --> 00:03:55.280
That's what it means when the text says Jesus prevented him, that is, he anticipated the conversation.
00:03:55.599 --> 00:03:58.080
And Jesus asked Peter a question.
00:03:58.400 --> 00:04:00.560
From whom do kings take taxes?
00:04:00.800 --> 00:04:02.960
From their own children or from strangers?
00:04:03.680 --> 00:04:07.120
And Peter gave the obvious answer from strangers.
00:04:07.599 --> 00:04:09.280
Now look at verse number twenty six.
00:04:09.439 --> 00:04:14.800
Peter said unto him, Of strangers, Jesus saith to him, then are the children free?
00:04:15.680 --> 00:04:17.360
And this is the key point.
00:04:17.600 --> 00:04:19.519
The temple is the house of God.
00:04:19.759 --> 00:04:21.439
Jesus is the Son of God.
00:04:22.000 --> 00:04:26.319
So by that logic, Jesus is not obligated to pay the temple tax.
00:04:26.800 --> 00:04:29.199
The tax is for the house of his father.
00:04:29.360 --> 00:04:32.000
And the son does not pay taxes to his own house.
00:04:32.160 --> 00:04:33.279
He is free.
00:04:33.519 --> 00:04:38.160
Now this is a quiet yet powerful declaration of who Jesus is.
00:04:38.480 --> 00:04:43.279
He's not just a teacher, he's not just a prophet, he is the Son of God.
00:04:43.600 --> 00:04:46.879
And yet what happens next is even more powerful.
00:04:47.120 --> 00:04:49.439
We read this in Matthew 17, 27.
00:04:49.839 --> 00:05:03.759
Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up, and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money, that taken given to them for me and thee.
00:05:04.160 --> 00:05:08.319
So Jesus in effect says, I don't have to pay it, but I will.
00:05:09.279 --> 00:05:12.639
He said, Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them.
00:05:12.879 --> 00:05:17.920
You see, Jesus chose to pay not out of obligation, but out of wisdom and humility.
00:05:18.240 --> 00:05:28.639
He didn't insist on his rights, he doesn't create an unnecessary offense, he didn't use his identity as a reason to withdraw from his ordinary responsibilities.
00:05:28.959 --> 00:05:32.720
Instead, he willingly stepped up to the expectation.
00:05:33.279 --> 00:05:39.199
Now that alone would have been remarkable, but then he provides the payment in a miraculous way.
00:05:39.439 --> 00:05:46.959
Jesus told Peter to go to the sea and to cast a hook and to take the first fish and open its mouth, and in it he would find a coin.
00:05:47.279 --> 00:05:51.360
Now it's important we remember that Peter was a professional fisherman.
00:05:51.680 --> 00:05:57.439
He used nets, he worked with crews of fishermen, he caught fish in large numbers.
00:05:57.759 --> 00:06:04.959
So for Jesus to tell him to go catch one fish with a hook, this alone would have been a humbling statement.
00:06:05.360 --> 00:06:09.040
But what is even more surprising is what happens next.
00:06:09.360 --> 00:06:16.879
Inside the fish's mouth is exactly enough money to pay the tax for me and thee, he says.
00:06:17.199 --> 00:06:18.639
How astonishing.
00:06:18.959 --> 00:06:25.439
Jesus provides in a way that is completely unexpected, yet it's precise and completely sufficient.
00:06:25.600 --> 00:06:30.240
It's not more than needed, it's not less than needed, it was exactly what was required.
00:06:30.480 --> 00:06:33.199
And he does it through his authority over creation.
00:06:33.600 --> 00:06:42.720
The same Lord who commands storms or cast out demons, or even shines his glory on the mountain, is now providing a coin to a fish.
00:06:43.040 --> 00:06:47.120
This is an important reminder to us that nothing is outside of his control.
00:06:48.800 --> 00:06:52.720
And what we find revealed about Jesus in this moment is important for us.
00:06:52.959 --> 00:06:55.680
First, we're reminded that Jesus is the Son.
00:06:55.920 --> 00:07:01.040
He's not obligated to pay this temple tax because the temple belongs to his father.
00:07:01.439 --> 00:07:04.399
He's not just part of the system, he stands above it.
00:07:05.120 --> 00:07:11.920
But then we see Jesus' humility, that even though he is free to not pay the tax, he chooses to pay it.
00:07:12.480 --> 00:07:18.720
He doesn't insist on his rights, he doesn't create an unnecessary offense, he just walks in wisdom and humility.
00:07:19.439 --> 00:07:21.839
And then we see Jesus making provision.
00:07:22.480 --> 00:07:25.920
He meets the need in a way that no one would ever expect.
00:07:26.240 --> 00:07:30.240
And in the process, he provides not just for himself, but for Peter as well.
00:07:31.120 --> 00:07:33.839
And this is where the picture gets even more powerful.
00:07:34.480 --> 00:07:37.199
This moment really is more than a miracle.
00:07:37.439 --> 00:07:39.040
It's a picture of the gospel.
00:07:39.759 --> 00:07:43.120
Jesus didn't owe the tax, but he paid it anyway.
00:07:43.680 --> 00:07:46.879
And he didn't just pay it for himself, he paid it for Peter too.
00:07:47.600 --> 00:07:49.439
And that's the entire gospel.
00:07:50.160 --> 00:08:00.639
Jesus owed no debt, he had no sin, no guilt, no obligation, but he stepped in and he paid what he did not owe.
00:08:05.360 --> 00:08:08.319
The cross is the ultimate picture of this moment.
00:08:08.879 --> 00:08:14.959
Jesus, the Son who is free, chooses to pay not with a coin, but with his life.
00:08:15.839 --> 00:08:17.680
So what does this mean for us?
00:08:18.240 --> 00:08:23.519
Well, first, we should trust what Jesus says, even when we don't fully understand it.
00:08:24.000 --> 00:08:30.399
The disciples were sorrowful because they didn't grasp the resurrection, but Jesus' words were true.
00:08:31.199 --> 00:08:34.879
Second, we ought not cling to our rights at the expense of our witness.
00:08:35.360 --> 00:08:41.039
Jesus could have refused to pay the tax, but he chose not to offend unnecessarily.
00:08:41.519 --> 00:08:45.840
And the third thing we see here is we must learn to trust God's provision.
00:08:46.240 --> 00:08:51.200
It may not come in the way that we expect, but it will be exactly what we need.
00:08:51.679 --> 00:08:56.159
And then last, we are reminded that Jesus has paid what we could not.
00:08:56.559 --> 00:09:01.360
The one who was free paid the penalty for you and for me.
00:09:02.639 --> 00:09:11.120
You see, we find here a Savior who speaks of his coming, death, and resurrection, and we find here a son who pays a debt he does not owe.
00:09:11.840 --> 00:09:20.639
And both of these things point to the same truth that Jesus came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.
00:09:21.600 --> 00:09:38.320
So, friend, whatever burden it is that you're carrying today, whatever confusion you may be facing, whatever need you have, Christ calls us to look to him, to trust his word, to rest in his provision, and remember the price he's already paid for those that know him as their personal savior.
00:09:39.919 --> 00:09:45.039

Hello and welcome back to the Gospel Explorations Podcast.
00:00:30.239 --> 00:00:31.440
This is Mark Davis.
00:00:31.519 --> 00:00:34.799
I'm your host, and this is episode number 72.

In our last episode together, we uh came down from the Mountain of Transfiguration into really what we would call the Valley of Need, and there we saw Jesus triumph where his disciples failed.

And then almost unexpectedly we see this moment that seems very small, even we might consider ordinary, and it's a conversation about paying taxes.
00:01:05.920 --> 00:01:08.239
But in it we need to be careful we don't miss something.
00:01:08.400 --> 00:01:15.280
Because in this simple moment, Jesus reveals something profound to us about who he is and what it is that he came to do.
00:01:15.519 --> 00:01:21.200
So if you have your Bibles, let's look at Matthew chapter 17, starting in verse number 22.
00:01:21.359 --> 00:01:33.760
We read these words, and while they abode in Galilee, Jesus said unto them, The Son of Man shall be betrayed into the hands of men, and they shall kill him, and the third day he should be raised again, and they were exceeding sorry.
00:01:34.000 --> 00:01:36.719
We see Jesus here speaking very plainly.
00:01:36.959 --> 00:01:43.760
The Son of Man should be betrayed, and they shall kill him, and the third day he will be risen again.
00:01:44.000 --> 00:01:53.519
Now this isn't vague or symbolic, it's a direct statement that he was going to be betrayed, he was going to be put to death, and he was going to rise again.
00:01:53.840 --> 00:01:57.280

00:01:57.519 --> 00:02:01.519
And the scriptures tell us that instead of feeling hope, they felt sorrow.
00:02:01.920 --> 00:02:05.519
Now, the question here is why would they feel this way?
00:02:05.680 --> 00:02:10.479
Well, it's because they heard the part about death, but they didn't grasp the part about the resurrection.
00:02:10.719 --> 00:02:13.280
And this happens more than once in the Gospels.
00:02:13.439 --> 00:02:19.360
Jesus repeatedly tells them what is coming, but it doesn't sink in until after it happens.
00:02:19.680 --> 00:02:26.800
In Luke 24, we're told that after the resurrection, the angels had to remind them, He is not here but is risen.
00:02:27.039 --> 00:02:28.960
Remember how he spake unto you.
00:02:29.120 --> 00:02:32.479
You see, they had heard it, but they had not understood.
00:02:32.800 --> 00:02:36.319
And if we're honest, I believe we can relate in the same way.
00:02:36.560 --> 00:02:43.439
We can hear truth, even clear truth, and we can still struggle to believe it when it doesn't fit our expectations.
00:02:43.919 --> 00:02:47.199
The disciples expected to find a conquering Messiah.
00:02:47.360 --> 00:02:50.080
They didn't expect him to be a suffering savior.
00:02:50.560 --> 00:02:57.759
But Jesus never speaks of the cross without also speaking of the resurrection, because death is not the end of the story.
00:02:58.000 --> 00:03:03.759
And even when we don't fully understand what God is doing, we have the hope that his promises remain true.
00:03:04.000 --> 00:03:07.120
Now the scene shifts somewhat to something very practical.
00:03:07.280 --> 00:03:09.520
Look at verses twenty-four and twenty-five.
00:03:09.759 --> 00:03:16.240
And when they were come to Capernaum, they that received tribute money came to Peter and said, Doth not your master pay tribute?
00:03:16.479 --> 00:03:17.840
He saith yes.
00:03:18.000 --> 00:03:22.719
And when he was coming to the house, Jesus prevented him, saying, What thinkest thou, Simon?
00:03:22.879 --> 00:03:28.159
Of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute, of their own children or of strangers?
00:03:28.560 --> 00:03:35.840
Now this tribute money was a temple tax, and every Jewish man was expected to contribute to the upkeep of the temple.
00:03:36.080 --> 00:03:39.599
It wasn't a Roman tax, it was a religious obligation.
00:03:39.919 --> 00:03:42.879
And Peter is asked, Does your master pay the temple tax?
00:03:43.120 --> 00:03:45.439
And without hesitation, Peter says yes.
00:03:45.680 --> 00:03:49.680
Then he walks into the house, and before he can even bring it up, Jesus speaks first.
00:03:50.000 --> 00:03:55.280
That's what it means when the text says Jesus prevented him, that is, he anticipated the conversation.
00:03:55.599 --> 00:03:58.080
And Jesus asked Peter a question.
00:03:58.400 --> 00:04:00.560
From whom do kings take taxes?
00:04:00.800 --> 00:04:02.960
From their own children or from strangers?
00:04:03.680 --> 00:04:07.120
And Peter gave the obvious answer from strangers.
00:04:07.599 --> 00:04:09.280
Now look at verse number twenty six.
00:04:09.439 --> 00:04:14.800
Peter said unto him, Of strangers, Jesus saith to him, then are the children free?
00:04:15.680 --> 00:04:17.360
And this is the key point.
00:04:17.600 --> 00:04:19.519
The temple is the house of God.
00:04:19.759 --> 00:04:21.439
Jesus is the Son of God.
00:04:22.000 --> 00:04:26.319
So by that logic, Jesus is not obligated to pay the temple tax.
00:04:26.800 --> 00:04:29.199
The tax is for the house of his father.
00:04:29.360 --> 00:04:32.000
And the son does not pay taxes to his own house.
00:04:32.160 --> 00:04:33.279
He is free.
00:04:33.519 --> 00:04:38.160
Now this is a quiet yet powerful declaration of who Jesus is.
00:04:38.480 --> 00:04:43.279
He's not just a teacher, he's not just a prophet, he is the Son of God.
00:04:43.600 --> 00:04:46.879
And yet what happens next is even more powerful.
00:04:47.120 --> 00:04:49.439
We read this in Matthew 17, 27.
00:04:49.839 --> 00:05:03.759
Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up, and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money, that taken given to them for me and thee.
00:05:04.160 --> 00:05:08.319
So Jesus in effect says, I don't have to pay it, but I will.
00:05:09.279 --> 00:05:12.639
He said, Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them.
00:05:12.879 --> 00:05:17.920
You see, Jesus chose to pay not out of obligation, but out of wisdom and humility.
00:05:18.240 --> 00:05:28.639
He didn't insist on his rights, he doesn't create an unnecessary offense, he didn't use his identity as a reason to withdraw from his ordinary responsibilities.
00:05:28.959 --> 00:05:32.720
Instead, he willingly stepped up to the expectation.
00:05:33.279 --> 00:05:39.199
Now that alone would have been remarkable, but then he provides the payment in a miraculous way.
00:05:39.439 --> 00:05:46.959
Jesus told Peter to go to the sea and to cast a hook and to take the first fish and open its mouth, and in it he would find a coin.
00:05:47.279 --> 00:05:51.360
Now it's important we remember that Peter was a professional fisherman.
00:05:51.680 --> 00:05:57.439
He used nets, he worked with crews of fishermen, he caught fish in large numbers.
00:05:57.759 --> 00:06:04.959
So for Jesus to tell him to go catch one fish with a hook, this alone would have been a humbling statement.
00:06:05.360 --> 00:06:09.040
But what is even more surprising is what happens next.
00:06:09.360 --> 00:06:16.879
Inside the fish's mouth is exactly enough money to pay the tax for me and thee, he says.
00:06:17.199 --> 00:06:18.639
How astonishing.
00:06:18.959 --> 00:06:25.439
Jesus provides in a way that is completely unexpected, yet it's precise and completely sufficient.
00:06:25.600 --> 00:06:30.240
It's not more than needed, it's not less than needed, it was exactly what was required.
00:06:30.480 --> 00:06:33.199
And he does it through his authority over creation.
00:06:33.600 --> 00:06:42.720
The same Lord who commands storms or cast out demons, or even shines his glory on the mountain, is now providing a coin to a fish.
00:06:43.040 --> 00:06:47.120
This is an important reminder to us that nothing is outside of his control.
00:06:48.800 --> 00:06:52.720
And what we find revealed about Jesus in this moment is important for us.
00:06:52.959 --> 00:06:55.680
First, we're reminded that Jesus is the Son.
00:06:55.920 --> 00:07:01.040
He's not obligated to pay this temple tax because the temple belongs to his father.
00:07:01.439 --> 00:07:04.399
He's not just part of the system, he stands above it.
00:07:05.120 --> 00:07:11.920
But then we see Jesus' humility, that even though he is free to not pay the tax, he chooses to pay it.
00:07:12.480 --> 00:07:18.720
He doesn't insist on his rights, he doesn't create an unnecessary offense, he just walks in wisdom and humility.
00:07:19.439 --> 00:07:21.839
And then we see Jesus making provision.
00:07:22.480 --> 00:07:25.920
He meets the need in a way that no one would ever expect.
00:07:26.240 --> 00:07:30.240
And in the process, he provides not just for himself, but for Peter as well.
00:07:31.120 --> 00:07:33.839
And this is where the picture gets even more powerful.
00:07:34.480 --> 00:07:37.199
This moment really is more than a miracle.
00:07:37.439 --> 00:07:39.040
It's a picture of the gospel.
00:07:39.759 --> 00:07:43.120
Jesus didn't owe the tax, but he paid it anyway.
00:07:43.680 --> 00:07:46.879
And he didn't just pay it for himself, he paid it for Peter too.
00:07:47.600 --> 00:07:49.439
And that's the entire gospel.
00:07:50.160 --> 00:08:00.639
Jesus owed no debt, he had no sin, no guilt, no obligation, but he stepped in and he paid what he did not owe.
00:08:05.360 --> 00:08:08.319
The cross is the ultimate picture of this moment.
00:08:08.879 --> 00:08:14.959
Jesus, the Son who is free, chooses to pay not with a coin, but with his life.
00:08:15.839 --> 00:08:17.680
So what does this mean for us?
00:08:18.240 --> 00:08:23.519
Well, first, we should trust what Jesus says, even when we don't fully understand it.
00:08:24.000 --> 00:08:30.399
The disciples were sorrowful because they didn't grasp the resurrection, but Jesus' words were true.
00:08:31.199 --> 00:08:34.879
Second, we ought not cling to our rights at the expense of our witness.
00:08:35.360 --> 00:08:41.039
Jesus could have refused to pay the tax, but he chose not to offend unnecessarily.
00:08:41.519 --> 00:08:45.840
And the third thing we see here is we must learn to trust God's provision.
00:08:46.240 --> 00:08:51.200
It may not come in the way that we expect, but it will be exactly what we need.
00:08:51.679 --> 00:08:56.159
And then last, we are reminded that Jesus has paid what we could not.
00:08:56.559 --> 00:09:01.360
The one who was free paid the penalty for you and for me.
00:09:02.639 --> 00:09:11.120
You see, we find here a Savior who speaks of his coming, death, and resurrection, and we find here a son who pays a debt he does not owe.
00:09:11.840 --> 00:09:20.639
And both of these things point to the same truth that Jesus came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.
00:09:21.600 --> 00:09:38.320
So, friend, whatever burden it is that you're carrying today, whatever confusion you may be facing, whatever need you have, Christ calls us to look to him, to trust his word, to rest in his provision, and remember the price he's already paid for those that know him as their personal savior.
