WEBVTT
00:00:10.880 --> 00:00:13.199
Hi everybody, Jonathan Brian, Go Out Living.
00:00:13.679 --> 00:00:16.000
Today's special guest is Dean Volk.
00:00:16.320 --> 00:00:31.280
He is a licensed physical therapist of 34 plus years, creator of 180-degree Psyatica solutions, founder of Psyatica Relief Now, and creator of the Psyatica Proof Lab, a three-day trial.
00:00:31.440 --> 00:00:32.079
Welcome, Dean.
00:00:32.240 --> 00:00:33.200
It's a pleasure to have you here.
00:00:33.600 --> 00:00:33.920
Thank you.
00:00:34.159 --> 00:00:35.600
Pleasure is all mine, Jonathan.
00:00:35.759 --> 00:00:36.479
Thank you for having me.
00:00:36.960 --> 00:00:45.840
So, like I was talking earlier, I thought we'd get started with um, you know, Psyatica is your thing, but you failed for several years.
00:00:45.920 --> 00:00:50.719
And it's not just saying you, it's pretty much the profession in general failed.
00:00:51.039 --> 00:00:55.759
Uh, maybe start with, you know, how that happened.
00:00:56.799 --> 00:01:28.000
Well, um, being a physical therapist, graduating school, I um jumped into my career as an orthopedic physical therapist right out of school, and I noticed that the clients who I had the most difficulty getting good results with were my sciatica clients, knee patients, shoulder patients, foot patients, jaw patients, whatever the other problems were, seemed to follow the typical protocol that I learned in school and learned from continuing education classes.
00:01:28.239 --> 00:01:40.959
But literally, my sciatica clients, I would say 80 to 85% of them would not get the results that I was happy with, nor obviously they they were not happy, which made me not happy with where they were.
00:01:41.280 --> 00:01:45.760
So I struggled with that literally for 17 years of my career.
00:01:45.920 --> 00:01:48.799
I was doing everything that the gurus said.
00:01:48.879 --> 00:01:54.319
I would go to continuing education courses specifically for low back and sciatica, come back, try it.
00:01:54.480 --> 00:02:00.480
What was what was kind of sad was everybody was doing a very similar thing.
00:02:00.640 --> 00:02:10.800
They were attacking where the pain was, they were doing Mackenzie extension exercises or William Flexion exercises and basing everything they did off of those.
00:02:11.120 --> 00:02:20.400
And yeah, like I said, 17 years, I struggled with getting my clients the relief that they deserved and that I wanted to give them.
00:02:20.639 --> 00:02:32.560
And it wasn't until literally 17, 18 years ago, I went to a course, and the gentleman was teaching on everything 180 degrees opposite of what we learn in school.
00:02:32.719 --> 00:02:37.680
He basically started the course by saying, Everything you've done in therapy, throw it out the window because I want to retrain you.
00:02:37.919 --> 00:02:39.840
And at the time I had three clinics.
00:02:40.000 --> 00:02:41.120
I thought I was doing well.
00:02:41.199 --> 00:02:48.879
I was living in out right outside of Charlotte, North Carolina, and I just thought, 180 degrees opposite of everything that I'm doing?
00:02:49.039 --> 00:02:51.520
What is how can how does that work?
00:02:51.840 --> 00:03:03.280
And literally driving back to my clinic after the weekend, I was thinking, how in the world am I going to start introducing a treatment approach that's 180 degrees opposite of what I've been doing?
00:03:03.360 --> 00:03:09.360
Because my clients would either think I was mistreating them before or I'm mistreating them now, depending on what the results were.
00:03:10.000 --> 00:03:12.560
So I thought popped into my head.
00:03:12.719 --> 00:03:15.520
Literally, I was praying, going, God, how do I apply this?
00:03:15.840 --> 00:03:23.520
Thought popped into my head, hey, first person who comes in as a new client who doesn't know you, check it out and see what happens if you apply these principles.
00:03:23.759 --> 00:03:30.319
So I kid you not, 10 o'clock in the morning, a 16-year-old homeschool soccer player comes into my clinic.
00:03:30.560 --> 00:03:41.360
He's playing for a local private school in the area, and he's holding right above his kneecap, saying, Dean, this has nothing to do with sciatica, but it tells you about the approach that I was using.
00:03:41.520 --> 00:03:50.960
He was holding right above his knee, he said, Dean, my doctor says I've got a quadriceps tendon tear, and I can't play soccer for eight to ten weeks, but I'm the leading scorer on my high school team and I got a tournament in two weeks.
00:03:51.039 --> 00:03:51.680
What can you do?
00:03:51.840 --> 00:03:55.919
And I thought, perfect person to try this stuff on.
00:03:56.080 --> 00:04:01.280
And I'm thinking, I'm being a straight shooter, I was born in New York, though, raised in northern Minnesota.
00:04:01.360 --> 00:04:02.800
So I'm kind of a straight shooter.
00:04:02.879 --> 00:04:11.759
And I said, Look, your doctor told you eight to ten weeks to get on the soccer field, but I'm going to tell you that's how long it takes for a quadriceps tendon to heal.
00:04:11.919 --> 00:04:13.439
That doesn't mean you're going to be able to play.
00:04:13.520 --> 00:04:18.079
You've got to stretch it, you've got to get your proprioception, your stamina, your strength, everything else back.
00:04:18.240 --> 00:04:19.759
He just said, What can you do for me?
00:04:19.920 --> 00:04:20.959
And I said, All right.
00:04:21.279 --> 00:04:26.800
I did one exercise from the course that I learned, just trying to find an imbalance and fixing it.
00:04:26.879 --> 00:04:30.480
And then I made up an exercise because I thought, all right, it's his knee, let's work his other knee.
00:04:30.560 --> 00:04:32.959
I literally did straight leg lifts on his good leg.
00:04:33.120 --> 00:04:37.519
And he stood up and said, and I don't talk about this, but he looked and goes, What the H did you do to me?
00:04:37.759 --> 00:04:39.120
I go, What's wrong?
00:04:39.360 --> 00:04:43.680
He goes, The burning in my knee is gone and it's straight for the first time in two weeks.
00:04:43.920 --> 00:04:48.879
And literally my jaw just started to fall as he put his butt down to his heels.
00:04:49.120 --> 00:04:53.680
He stood up, he started doing mini squats, he started jumping, he started walking and sprinting around my clan.
00:04:53.839 --> 00:04:55.360
He goes, Can I go play soccer?
00:04:55.439 --> 00:05:04.720
And I said, Mmm, you gotta go back to the surgeon because I'm not putting my license and career on the line for this because I my jaw was on the floor.
00:05:04.800 --> 00:05:06.480
I literally had a trainer who was with me.
00:05:06.639 --> 00:05:08.480
She jabbed me in the chest, she goes, What do you do?
00:05:08.560 --> 00:05:11.600
And I go, I don't know.
00:05:12.319 --> 00:05:16.240
So that was my introduction to doing things 180 degrees opposite.
00:05:16.480 --> 00:05:20.399
And at that point, I started going, Hey, you know what?
00:05:20.639 --> 00:05:25.839
Maybe, just maybe, this might be the answer I've been looking for for my sciatica clients.
00:05:25.920 --> 00:05:35.680
So I started introducing my sciatica clients a couple exercises at a time, a couple imbalances at a time, and they started getting better and they wouldn't come back like they used to.
00:05:36.000 --> 00:05:39.759
It would be, I would I would get them better for a couple weeks, they'd come back and say, I've splared up again.
00:05:39.920 --> 00:05:45.600
This time it was like months and years before they would come back and say, Hey, I've been doing those exercises, you got any more?
00:05:46.240 --> 00:05:56.959
So that was 17 years ago, and in 2018, I was literally walking to work one day, just looking up online what um Google had to say about Syaka.
00:05:57.439 --> 00:06:09.600
And I went, it made me cringe because it's everything that we used to do: the cat-cow exercises, the press-ups, the nerve flossing, nerve gliding, the pelvic tilts, the bridges, all the core strengthening that I used to do.
00:06:09.680 --> 00:06:14.160
I'm going, I know this doesn't work for a high majority of people.
00:06:14.240 --> 00:06:16.879
So I thought, I'm gonna start a Facebook group.
00:06:17.120 --> 00:06:22.319
The only problem is I'm a little older than the average PT.
00:06:22.879 --> 00:06:24.160
How do you start a Facebook group?
00:06:24.240 --> 00:06:26.160
So I literally Googled, how do you start a Facebook group?
00:06:26.319 --> 00:06:36.079
So that morning, it took me all morning to set up a Facebook group, and little did I know that um three years later it would turn into a full-time job.
00:06:36.399 --> 00:06:38.319
So that's amazing.
00:06:39.839 --> 00:06:43.600
So uh a lot of people, I mean, this affects a lot of people.
00:06:44.160 --> 00:06:50.959
And you just mentioned a lot of ways that they were doing it or are still doing it, aren't they?
00:06:51.279 --> 00:06:51.839
They are.
00:06:52.240 --> 00:06:59.040
I I try to talk to PTs, I try to talk to Kairos, I try to talk to doctors, and they all look at me like I'm crazy.
00:06:59.199 --> 00:07:01.920
Why would you work on the non-painful side?
00:07:02.079 --> 00:07:03.199
Why would you do this?
00:07:03.279 --> 00:07:09.040
And I try to explain how your body gets out of balance when it compensates for itself for the pain.
00:07:09.279 --> 00:07:13.920
And so if your body's pulling like this and you've got a problem somewhere in your body, guess what happens?
00:07:14.079 --> 00:07:20.240
That area of problem is gonna have to protect itself against all this extra body tension and stress.
00:07:20.560 --> 00:07:25.920
I said, so if you fix that tension and stress, guess what happens to the area of the body that's problematic?
00:07:26.079 --> 00:07:28.720
It doesn't have to protect, it can relax.
00:07:28.800 --> 00:07:30.959
And it when it relaxes, guess what happens?
00:07:31.120 --> 00:07:33.839
You get normal blood flow, you get normal nerve conduction.
00:07:34.000 --> 00:07:44.560
Your central nervous system doesn't, is not in the fire flight, high alert set um session that it's been in for days, weeks, months, years, however long you've been suffering.
00:07:45.040 --> 00:07:46.639
And they go, Yeah, but it doesn't make sense.
00:07:46.720 --> 00:07:49.920
Why are you gonna stretch something that's not tight?
00:07:50.160 --> 00:07:53.199
And here I'm gonna give a little demonstration here.
00:07:53.759 --> 00:07:56.319
I just happen to have a little towel that I use all the time.
00:07:56.959 --> 00:08:04.800
So what we learn in therapy, and what we learn in PT school, chiropractors learn, trainers learn, if you've got a tight muscle, what's the way to loosen it?
00:08:05.839 --> 00:08:06.959
You stretch it, right?
00:08:07.199 --> 00:08:12.959
So you're taking something that's tight, and in the case of sciatica, your hamstring's tight and irritated most of the time.
00:08:13.199 --> 00:08:18.800
You're taking it, making it tighter, hoping that that's gonna loosen it and relax it.
00:08:19.199 --> 00:08:26.160
And I always tell people, where in life do you take something that's tight to m and when you loosen it, you tighten it first.
00:08:27.040 --> 00:08:30.959
So, no, when you want to loosen something, you do the exact opposite of tightening.
00:08:31.680 --> 00:08:35.360
And so that's what I do, that's what I focus on, that's what makes the approach unique.
00:08:35.440 --> 00:08:42.960
It's literally it's called the 180-degree sciatica solution because we're doing everything the exact opposite of what you were doing.
00:08:43.200 --> 00:08:47.200
And when people people hear that, they go, Yeah, but why do you want to do that?
00:08:47.360 --> 00:08:49.840
I go, Well, is what you're doing working?
00:08:50.080 --> 00:08:50.720
Well, no.
00:08:50.879 --> 00:09:01.440
I said, Well, so if your goal is to get here and you're doing something and you're doing this or doing that, don't you want to sort of make a U-turn and try to move towards us?
00:09:01.919 --> 00:09:06.080
And that start starts making people think, hmm, that makes a little bit of sense.
00:09:06.240 --> 00:09:16.720
Why do I want to keep on doing what's not working, praying it works one day, instead of trying something totally different that this weirdo online is telling me works?
00:09:17.360 --> 00:09:22.240
Well, especially when, like you said, there's over 80% chance of failure anyway.
00:09:22.399 --> 00:09:28.159
You know what this sounds to me like is you you look for the core issue, and that's what they're not doing.
00:09:28.320 --> 00:09:32.480
They're just going straight to okay, this is the the tight part, this is the pain.
00:09:32.799 --> 00:09:35.360
This is a symptom, let's let's take care of the symptoms.
00:09:35.519 --> 00:09:41.440
I I heard a story the other day, someone talking about, hey, that there was this garbage dump and they were having a rat problem.
00:09:42.639 --> 00:09:49.600
So it wasn't a garbage dump, there was some garbage in an alleyway, and they had a rat problem, and they decided, hey, we got to get rid of the rats.
00:09:49.679 --> 00:09:51.200
So they started setting rat traps.
00:09:51.440 --> 00:09:53.120
So they set rat traps, and guess what happened?
00:09:53.279 --> 00:09:54.480
More rats came.
00:09:54.720 --> 00:10:00.320
Yeah, you're getting rid of the rats, but more rats are gonna come because you're not taking care of the garbage problem.
00:10:00.799 --> 00:10:06.080
So, what I see with sciatica is we're treating the symptoms, we're treating the symptoms.
00:10:06.159 --> 00:10:08.000
Okay, we're calming the symptoms, but guess what comes?
00:10:08.159 --> 00:10:08.879
Guess what happens?
00:10:08.960 --> 00:10:14.559
It comes back the same or with a vengeance even worse, and it's just a cyclical cycle.
00:10:14.639 --> 00:10:16.879
Hey, let's give it an injection and calm it down.
00:10:17.120 --> 00:10:26.399
That's fine and dandy, but that's like putting novocaine in your jaw, punching yourself, saying, Look, I can do this, but then when the novocaine wears off, it all comes back.
00:10:26.960 --> 00:10:30.960
So, yes, to me, it's let's get rid of the garbage.
00:10:31.039 --> 00:10:36.399
The garbage is all the extra tension, all the imbalances, all the compensations your body's doing.
00:10:36.639 --> 00:10:39.759
Let's get rid of those and then see what happens to your symptoms.
00:10:39.919 --> 00:10:45.440
Whether it's coming from a muscle, a tendon, a disc, a joint, guess what's gonna happen?
00:10:45.519 --> 00:10:48.399
Those areas are gonna be able to relax and actually start to heal.
00:10:48.720 --> 00:10:59.120
Getting back to kind of when I think of sciatica, I don't know if people understand that exactly because it's actually more than just one thing.
00:10:59.919 --> 00:11:06.639
It there's so many, it's almost like it's a central part of a bigger issue.
00:11:07.200 --> 00:11:11.759
And everything just goes there and kind of extends from that.
00:11:11.919 --> 00:11:13.679
Is that kind of how you look at it?
00:11:14.000 --> 00:11:18.879
Yes, and I always tell people do you realize that sciatica is really not a diagnosis?
00:11:19.120 --> 00:11:25.440
Sciatica is basically that all sciatica means is you've got an irritation of your sciatic nerve.
00:11:25.679 --> 00:11:26.240
Boom.
00:11:26.399 --> 00:11:28.879
It doesn't tell you why, it doesn't tell you what.
00:11:29.120 --> 00:11:36.639
People's MRIs can be massively horrendous looking, but hey, it's not pinching on one of the nerve roots that causes it.
00:11:36.720 --> 00:11:37.919
So what's causing this?
00:11:38.159 --> 00:11:43.279
Other people have a totally clean MRI, and it's like, wait a second, what's causing this?
00:11:43.759 --> 00:11:50.399
So the cause oftentimes is unknown or not identifiable.
00:11:50.639 --> 00:11:55.200
And to me, it really doesn't matter because our bodies were made to heal themselves.
00:11:55.279 --> 00:11:56.799
It's just the way we were created.
00:11:56.960 --> 00:11:58.960
I mean, you get a cut, what happens?
00:11:59.120 --> 00:12:06.320
It bleeds to clean, the scab comes over, it heals, and if you leave it alone and don't keep picking at it, it'll heal.
00:12:06.559 --> 00:12:10.000
Our bodies were amazingly made.
00:12:10.320 --> 00:12:24.799
And if we treat our bodies right, if we get things that are out of balance back into balance, whether it's physically, mentally, emotionally, chemically, I mean, when our when our bot when our body chemistry is out of balance, guess what?
00:12:24.879 --> 00:12:32.480
If we balance it out, if we get the right minerals, if we get the right balance, the body is amazing at taking care of itself.
00:12:33.519 --> 00:12:35.519
So simple.
00:12:35.919 --> 00:12:37.440
It it's mine.
00:12:37.759 --> 00:12:42.320
I go, look, I said, this is gonna seem stupid to you because it's so common sense.
00:12:42.559 --> 00:12:44.639
If it hurts, stop doing it.
00:12:44.799 --> 00:12:46.879
They go, well, no, I was told to push through the pain.
00:12:47.039 --> 00:12:52.720
I go, and here you are talking to me five years later, you're still dealing with the same pain.
00:12:52.879 --> 00:12:54.320
When are you gonna stop?
00:12:55.759 --> 00:12:56.799
Okay, it is easy.
00:12:57.200 --> 00:12:57.519
Right.
00:12:57.679 --> 00:13:00.799
Well, okay, why is it still being taught wrong?
00:13:01.120 --> 00:13:02.320
Let's start there.
00:13:03.039 --> 00:13:03.840
You know what?
00:13:04.080 --> 00:13:07.039
That's what people know, that's what they're familiar with.
00:13:07.279 --> 00:13:13.360
And I'm not saying that doing a um a McKenzie extension exercise doesn't help.
00:13:13.600 --> 00:13:17.039
Because it can help some people, depending on the cause.
00:13:17.360 --> 00:13:20.320
Because everybody has their own movement biases.
00:13:20.480 --> 00:13:25.279
They're gonna they're gonna favor one position over another, one movement over another.
00:13:25.600 --> 00:13:35.279
And um if somebody doesn't understand that, and they just keep moving any which way they want, they're gonna keep irritating what's already irritated.
00:13:35.919 --> 00:13:48.399
So a lot of the things that we do that I do is I try to teach people, hey, you've got to learn what your triggers are, so that you stop doing those things and you start feeding positive triggers versus negative triggers.
00:13:48.720 --> 00:13:53.440
But schooling-wise, all of us learn very similar things.
00:13:53.600 --> 00:14:00.879
That's why when you go online and you look up um sciatica on YouTube, it's like, hey, here's the three best exercises you can do to get rid of your sciatic in 10 minutes.
00:14:01.039 --> 00:14:04.480
I'm like going, and everybody goes, Dean, why don't you put your exercises on there?
00:14:04.559 --> 00:14:09.360
I'm going, well, I don't have specific exercises that work for everybody.
00:14:09.679 --> 00:14:19.759
I have to, I have to teach you how to assess for your own imbalances because your body's gonna compensate differently than Tom, then Joe, then Sally, than Ricky.
00:14:20.000 --> 00:14:28.080
Um, everybody's body is gonna respond based on um their background, based on their muscular structure, based on their history.
00:14:28.240 --> 00:14:32.720
Nobody responds to pain, no two people respond identically to pain the same way.
00:14:32.960 --> 00:14:39.440
So some people I may be working on their shoulders more than their trunk, more than their legs, depending on where the imbalances are.
00:14:39.600 --> 00:14:46.080
So for me to go, hey, you know what, do these three things, you're gonna be fine, I'd be doing what everybody else does.
00:14:46.320 --> 00:14:48.240
And it just doesn't work like that.
00:14:48.559 --> 00:14:56.720
Well, yeah, I mean, that's the medical world in general, is okay, majority of people fit into this little thing, so let's just throw, we'll worry about that.
00:14:56.879 --> 00:14:59.440
We don't actually individualize it.
00:15:00.080 --> 00:15:00.399
Absolutely.
00:15:00.559 --> 00:15:04.639
It's like any medication, it's well, I always use caffeine or chocolate.
00:15:04.879 --> 00:15:05.679
You know what?
00:15:05.840 --> 00:15:10.559
I can have chocolate 10 minutes before bed, and I could sleep all night like a baby.
00:15:10.799 --> 00:15:13.519
My wife, if she eats chocolate after 1 p.m.
00:15:13.759 --> 00:15:17.200
in the afternoon, she's up till three in the morning because she's so wired.
00:15:17.440 --> 00:15:22.320
Caffeine, I can have a I bef when I stopped before I stopped drinking Coke.
00:15:22.639 --> 00:15:25.279
I would I could have a Coke any time of the evening.
00:15:25.360 --> 00:15:28.559
I could have two or three at dinner refills at a restaurant.
00:15:28.799 --> 00:15:29.519
Wouldn't affect me.
00:15:29.600 --> 00:15:34.480
If my wife took a sip of my Coke, she couldn't fall asleep for six hours.
00:15:34.799 --> 00:15:42.080
So it's not that I'm better, it's not that she's worse, it's just that everybody's body's chemistry, everybody's body responds differently.
00:15:42.159 --> 00:15:44.720
It's like, hey, you got a headache, take Tylenol.
00:15:44.799 --> 00:15:49.840
It's like, well, it might be poisonous to somebody where it's a miracle for another person.
00:15:50.399 --> 00:15:52.399
So amazing.
00:15:52.639 --> 00:15:58.720
Yeah, it's it's just sad how unindividualistic the medical world has become.
00:15:58.799 --> 00:16:04.879
Everybody follows the protocol, whether it's the hospital protocol, the doctor's protocol, or the insurance protocol.
00:16:05.039 --> 00:16:08.879
It's like, hey, this is what you do, these are the steps you take to get the best results.
00:16:09.039 --> 00:16:12.000
And I I did that for 17 years with my sciatica clients.
00:16:12.159 --> 00:16:17.679
I followed the rules, I followed the textbooks, and 17 years later I went, you know what?
00:16:17.840 --> 00:16:18.799
This ain't working.
00:16:18.879 --> 00:16:20.240
We got to do something better.
00:16:20.559 --> 00:16:27.679
Well, and the worst part is, like you say, I mean, it's it's shown to fail uh majority of the time.
00:16:27.840 --> 00:16:33.759
So to not understand that we need to switch things up and look at it differently, that that's the frustration right there.
00:16:34.000 --> 00:16:34.639
It's huge.
00:16:34.720 --> 00:16:41.759
And and with the medical world too, it's sort of here's what you're gonna do and pray it works.
00:16:42.000 --> 00:16:47.279
And seeing how I've taken on the full 180-degree um approach.
00:16:47.440 --> 00:16:55.759
So not only do I do the exact opposite of that, I actually offer people um the sciatica proof lab that you mentioned at the beginning.
00:16:55.919 --> 00:16:57.600
I offer people, hey, you know what?
00:16:57.759 --> 00:17:08.160
You've probably been scammed, you've probably been taken advantage of, you've probably been told that they this person can help you and that you do what this protocol says and you're gonna be fine.
00:17:08.319 --> 00:17:11.359
Oh, I mean, talk about skepticism nowadays.
00:17:11.440 --> 00:17:19.839
Everybody's getting scammed and it's skeptical, everybody's a skeptic, and they should be for their for their own sake, especially for their own sake, especially for their health.
00:17:20.000 --> 00:17:22.559
And so what I offer is I go, hey, you know what?
00:17:22.799 --> 00:17:24.720
Let's take this for a test drive.
00:17:24.799 --> 00:17:27.200
Let's take my approach for a test drive for three days.
00:17:27.279 --> 00:17:39.599
I will work with a person personally, three one half hour sessions live on Zoom like this, and I will walk them through a couple assessments, walk them through a couple things they can do to balance out imbalances.
00:17:39.759 --> 00:17:44.960
And over the three days, my average person is anywhere from 20 to 50% improved.
00:17:45.279 --> 00:17:48.880
And I say, okay, now I can't give it all away like this.
00:17:48.960 --> 00:17:49.680
I wish I could.
00:17:49.759 --> 00:17:56.319
I wish I had won the lottery when I was younger, and I'm a multimillionaire and I can um take care of everybody for free, but I gotta live.
00:17:56.640 --> 00:17:58.880
So here's what I have available after that.
00:17:59.039 --> 00:18:00.720
You want it, this is what it costs.
00:18:00.799 --> 00:18:02.640
If you don't want it, totally understand.
00:18:02.880 --> 00:18:05.759
Enjoy the 20 to 50% improvement that you have.
00:18:06.079 --> 00:18:09.359
So I have tried to flip things on its head and go, hey, you know what?
00:18:09.519 --> 00:18:23.119
I will I will give you a test drive so you don't have to commit to something and pray that it works like you have done with the injection, with the chiropractic decompression, with the physical therapy, with the um massage, with the Pilates, with everything else.
00:18:23.359 --> 00:18:30.640
Or and God forbid the surgery, which is only required in such a small, small, small percentage of people.
00:18:30.880 --> 00:18:34.799
That's why there's so many failed back surgery cases out there.
00:18:35.200 --> 00:18:35.440
Yeah.
00:18:36.000 --> 00:18:38.559
No, and I've seen those from the surge tech side.
00:18:38.799 --> 00:18:40.000
Yeah, it's amazing.
00:18:40.160 --> 00:18:47.359
And then they go back a second time to fix what wasn't fixed the first time, and I'm going, you use the same surgeon.
00:18:47.440 --> 00:18:50.160
I'm look, I'm not against surgery, I'm not against surgery.
00:18:50.240 --> 00:18:53.200
There are people out there who are saving lives, doing amazing things.
00:18:53.359 --> 00:18:57.519
But when it comes to if you have a failed back surgery, you go back to the same person.
00:18:58.640 --> 00:19:01.920
I I just go, What why?
00:19:02.079 --> 00:19:03.200
Well, they're doing a different surgery.
00:19:03.279 --> 00:19:06.319
I said, Of course they are, because they didn't fix you the first time.
00:19:06.400 --> 00:19:12.559
Now they have to do something more drastic, like a fusion, which is usually the third option after the failed microdisquectomy.
00:19:12.640 --> 00:19:14.000
Well, let's do a laminectomy.
00:19:14.079 --> 00:19:16.000
You know what, it's not stable back there anymore.
00:19:16.160 --> 00:19:18.240
Well, you took some bone out, doc.
00:19:18.640 --> 00:19:21.599
So now we gotta fuse it, and that's gonna hold you.
00:19:21.920 --> 00:19:28.079
But we can tell you that we'll probably take care of the pain down the leg, but your back pain will probably get worse.
00:19:28.240 --> 00:19:31.039
That's what uh it just Yeah.
00:19:31.200 --> 00:19:32.799
No, I want to pull my hair out.
00:19:33.039 --> 00:19:45.200
Yeah, and that's part of the problem though, is I can say from the patient side, you get into a diagnosis, into a situation, and you just kind of throw everything into okay, I gotta trust them and just go with it.
00:19:45.440 --> 00:19:50.400
That's the hardest part to get away from, and I know that from personal experience.
00:19:50.720 --> 00:19:51.359
Absolutely.
00:19:51.519 --> 00:19:58.160
And I mean, um, people older than our generation, I'm I'm assuming I'm a little older than you.
00:19:59.200 --> 00:19:59.839
How old are you?
00:20:00.880 --> 00:20:03.759
No, no, you're a kid, you're much younger than me.
00:20:04.079 --> 00:20:05.599
Um, I'm gonna be 60.
00:20:05.839 --> 00:20:06.160
Okay.
00:20:06.720 --> 00:20:20.880
So um our parents' generation, it was you go to the doctor, then again, medicine back then wasn't so um corporate corporate and wasn't so this is the protocol.
00:20:21.039 --> 00:20:25.119
They actually would come to your house or you would go to them and they would actually spend time with you.
00:20:25.279 --> 00:20:32.559
They wouldn't have to look at their computer to ask the right questions to make sure every T is crossed and dot is I so that the insurance company is going to recover it.
00:20:32.799 --> 00:20:34.960
They were actually practicing medicine.
00:20:35.200 --> 00:20:37.359
Whereas nowadays, nothing against doctors.
00:20:37.519 --> 00:20:40.960
This is what they're forced into doing, and it's follow the protocol.
00:20:41.039 --> 00:20:45.680
It's like, wait a second, but this person doesn't really fit what's going on.
00:20:46.000 --> 00:20:58.799
How do we inject, not inject, inject, but how do we intercept something that might we might be missing instead of going through this step-by-step protocol?
00:20:59.039 --> 00:21:05.759
So yeah, it's it's gotta be frustrating for doctors because I am not an anti-doctor.
00:21:05.839 --> 00:21:18.000
There there are phenomenal doctors out there trying to practice as best they can, but there are restrictions on them because they have to follow certain protocols in order to get reimbursed so they can live.
00:21:18.079 --> 00:21:24.640
And that's why there's so many now concierge doctors going out on their own, doing it their own way, because they got sick of the system.
00:21:25.039 --> 00:21:28.799
Well, I like how you brought up kind of back your day, my day.
00:21:28.960 --> 00:21:30.559
The doctor actually talked to you.
00:21:30.720 --> 00:21:34.319
He actually knew you from a personal standpoint.
00:21:34.559 --> 00:21:39.759
I'm guessing, because uh you do a lot of this online now, that it's a lot of conversation.
00:21:39.920 --> 00:21:47.039
You actually you don't need the it's not that quick 10 minute will, which they usually already know what they're gonna do.
00:21:47.279 --> 00:21:47.440
Right.
00:21:48.000 --> 00:21:49.119
We're gonna have worked this out.
00:21:49.200 --> 00:21:52.720
We're gonna figure out what really is uh the cause of this.
00:21:53.200 --> 00:21:53.599
Absolutely.
00:21:53.680 --> 00:21:53.920
Yeah.
00:21:54.000 --> 00:21:59.519
When I got out of school, I I had we I got really excited when we got.
00:22:00.160 --> 00:22:04.240
Um, a notepad that was filled with sciatica exercises.
00:22:04.400 --> 00:22:08.240
Because when someone came in with sciatica, we can rip it off, say, here's the exercise to do.
00:22:08.559 --> 00:22:11.200
And thinking that, hey, you know what?
00:22:11.279 --> 00:22:12.799
Look at the time it's saving me.
00:22:12.880 --> 00:22:16.240
Look at they have a printout, they can see what to do at home.
00:22:16.559 --> 00:22:23.519
But what we failed to do back then was to go through each exercise with them, make sure that it was helping them, not hurting them.
00:22:23.680 --> 00:22:26.880
Obviously, we told them, hey, if it if it causes pain, don't do it.
00:22:27.200 --> 00:22:36.240
But it wasn't like we needed to go through each and every step because, hey, we had a pre-printed format, and that's what a lot of medicine is now, and it's really sad.
00:22:36.799 --> 00:22:42.319
And yes, like you said, when I get on a call with somebody, we're talking about, hey, you know what?
00:22:42.400 --> 00:22:43.519
How are they sleeping?
00:22:43.680 --> 00:22:47.839
What kinds of foods are you eating that possibly could be causing this?
00:22:47.920 --> 00:22:50.000
What kind of stress is in your life?
00:22:50.240 --> 00:22:54.319
Have, I mean, last year I went through a stressful time, lost my mom.
00:22:54.480 --> 00:23:04.160
It's like, all right, when I know when people have stress, their nervous system is a little bit more um sensitive.
00:23:04.559 --> 00:23:12.880
And so any little thing can cause pain compared to when you're not in that emotional tight state, you can tolerate a lot more.
00:23:13.119 --> 00:23:18.319
And so we talk about stressors, we talk about how much they're in the sun, what kind of sleep are they getting.
00:23:18.400 --> 00:23:21.200
So it's much more than just, hey, you know what?
00:23:21.359 --> 00:23:23.119
Let's fix this imbalance and you're done.
00:23:23.200 --> 00:23:31.279
It's like, all right, now let's take care of you holistically with a W, because I'm looking at the whole body instead of H holistic.
00:23:31.519 --> 00:23:42.160
Not that I'm against H holistic, but I I always want to tell people, look, I'm looking at your whole body in regards to this, not just, oh, the painful butt and the painful leg.
00:23:42.480 --> 00:23:43.359
I love that.
00:23:43.599 --> 00:23:50.960
Well, and that's why you can do it online, is because you're really having those conversations and it's not.
00:23:51.200 --> 00:23:52.319
I mean, that's been the problem.
00:23:52.480 --> 00:23:59.200
Okay, we're gonna do hands-on, we're gonna do but this is they're doing it like you said, 180 degrees wrong.
00:23:59.759 --> 00:24:11.519
So you can do it from this situation because we're not sitting there stretching and pulling and doing all that physically, exactly.
00:24:11.680 --> 00:24:14.160
They can do it from their their own home.
00:24:14.480 --> 00:24:27.279
And what I found is when someone has pretty much any physical ailment, it's not bad to get passive things done, get the massage done, grab a massage gun and massage yourself, or have somebody else do something to you.
00:24:27.440 --> 00:24:32.400
But what I have found is that doesn't necessarily change your muscle pattern.
00:24:32.720 --> 00:24:41.759
It might relax a tight muscle, it might calm down things temporarily, but for long term, you've got to be able to balance out your own body.
00:24:41.839 --> 00:24:45.680
You've got to be able to make the changes in your muscles that are gonna hold you in place.
00:24:45.839 --> 00:24:55.359
And that's one thing that so many people with sciatica think is hey, you know what, if my struck if I just had a stronger core, if I got my stomach muscles stronger, then I'd be fine.
00:24:55.440 --> 00:25:04.319
I say, well, that's fine and dandy, but if you're trying to strengthen yourself when your body's out of balance, number one, your muscles are not functioning optimally.
00:25:04.480 --> 00:25:12.720
Number two, you're telling me you want to hold yourself in that imbalanced position, which is causing the added stress and the pain.
00:25:13.039 --> 00:25:21.519
So 180 degrees opposite is hey, you know what, we're gonna calm the symptoms down before we stabilize you so that we hold you in a position that's not painful.
00:25:23.200 --> 00:25:24.480
It makes sense.
00:25:24.799 --> 00:25:28.240
It I mean, as I say it, I go, this is stupid simple.
00:25:28.319 --> 00:25:29.839
This is common sense.
00:25:31.599 --> 00:25:33.119
But you but you know it's crazy.
00:25:33.200 --> 00:25:51.839
I I still, when I get working with some people, I'm doing some contract work here and there outside in a clinic or I'm going to people's homes, and I still I I am still retraining myself 17 years later to stop doing what I was taught because it's so ingrained in me.
00:25:52.880 --> 00:25:58.000
And yeah, it's it I I just have to laugh at myself at times.
00:25:58.079 --> 00:25:58.880
I'm going to waste something.
00:25:59.039 --> 00:26:05.039
I teach this to people online and I'm doing the exact same thing that I tell them not to do because that's just the way we're programmed.
00:26:05.119 --> 00:26:06.960
That's what we that's what we learn.
00:26:08.079 --> 00:26:20.640
So you're starting to see a change in attitudes, a change in how people are looking at medicine in general.
00:26:21.599 --> 00:26:24.480
They're starting to understand it is failing.
00:26:25.519 --> 00:26:29.599
And yeah, we are here just practicing medicine.
00:26:29.759 --> 00:26:30.319
That's what it is.
00:26:30.400 --> 00:26:31.039
It's practice.
00:26:31.119 --> 00:26:38.319
Like, all right, let me practice, let me let me go to someone who practiced a lot and thinks a little bit differently than what everybody else does.
00:26:38.559 --> 00:26:45.759
Because, yes, it feels like in the medical system, it's like, all right, you got sciatica, you're gonna go to your primary care doctor.
00:26:45.920 --> 00:26:52.720
Primary care doctor is probably gonna give you a combination or one of the muscle relaxers, anti-inflammatory pain medications, and do an x-ray.
00:26:52.880 --> 00:26:58.000
X-rays 99.9% times worthless for a cyaticline.
00:26:58.400 --> 00:27:00.640
But they do it because that's the standard protocol.
00:27:00.880 --> 00:27:02.640
Come back in two weeks if you're not feeling anybody.
00:27:02.880 --> 00:27:03.920
They come back in two weeks.
00:27:04.079 --> 00:27:12.160
Maybe they get sent to physical therapy, maybe they get changed up on the medication if it didn't work because obviously we got to try to cover up the pain.
00:27:12.480 --> 00:27:19.200
And the pain medication, the anti-inflammatory and the muscle relaxer do absolutely nothing for long-term healing.
00:27:19.359 --> 00:27:21.119
It's just to mask the problem.
00:27:21.440 --> 00:27:31.839
And the big problem with masking the problem is you have an underlying issue that you're still aggravating without realizing it because the symptoms are being masked.
00:27:32.480 --> 00:27:34.319
That's just like the epidural injections.
00:27:34.400 --> 00:27:36.480
They go, Well, the injections are really helping me.
00:27:36.559 --> 00:27:37.759
I go, yeah, but you have to keep getting them.
00:27:37.839 --> 00:27:39.759
Yeah, you have two or three a year.
00:27:40.079 --> 00:27:53.359
I said, and if you didn't get them, your pain would be significantly more than what it was when you started because you're continuing to do the things that were aggravating you to begin with, but you don't feel the pain because it's being masked.
00:27:53.839 --> 00:27:55.599
Yeah, but at least I can function.
00:27:55.759 --> 00:28:00.799
I said, but let's let's do the long term here.
00:28:01.200 --> 00:28:08.720
I mean, it reminds me of conversations when I used to own my clinics and someone would tell me that they had back pain, but it's under control because they've been seeing a chiropractor.
00:28:09.039 --> 00:28:14.079
And I have nothing personally against chiropractors, but in these cases, I go, how long have you been seeing the chiropractor?
00:28:14.240 --> 00:28:15.680
Well, for four years.
00:28:16.000 --> 00:28:16.960
Like, okay.
00:28:17.119 --> 00:28:20.640
I said, how do you feel today compared to what you did four years ago?
00:28:20.720 --> 00:28:23.359
Well, it's the same, but the chiropractor's helping me.
00:28:24.240 --> 00:28:25.680
I said, I gotcha.
00:28:26.160 --> 00:28:28.880
I said, So you've been going for four years.
00:28:28.960 --> 00:28:29.440
How often?
00:28:29.599 --> 00:28:32.160
Well, it's once or twice a week, depending on how it feels.
00:28:32.319 --> 00:28:33.119
I said, okay.
00:28:33.279 --> 00:28:37.680
So you've been doing this for four years, they've been helping you, but you feel the same.
00:28:38.079 --> 00:28:38.720
Yes.
00:28:39.200 --> 00:28:41.039
They go, are you telling me they're not helping me?
00:28:41.119 --> 00:28:43.119
I said, I'm not telling you they're not helping you.
00:28:43.200 --> 00:28:51.519
I'm just repeating back to you what you're telling me, that you're no different today than you were four years ago, but you said they're helping you.
00:28:51.759 --> 00:29:00.160
They might be giving you a manipulation and you feel good for a couple days and you can function, but you're not telling me you're any better than what you were four years ago.
00:29:00.240 --> 00:29:07.920
And that's my concern, and that my heart for you is I want you better than what you were last week, let alone four years ago.
00:29:08.240 --> 00:29:21.279
And it just, as I replay things in my head, I just go, wow, how come I didn't figure out that doing things totally differently seven the first 17 years of my career?
00:29:21.440 --> 00:29:28.799
I mean, I I was putting people on the traction unit, traction and heat for every low back and scientific client.
00:29:28.880 --> 00:29:29.920
They loved it.
00:29:30.079 --> 00:29:32.880
Then I would do some manual therapy, they thought it was awesome.
00:29:33.039 --> 00:29:37.920
Then back then we were doing ultrasound, which is not the picture, but the heat ultrasound.
00:29:38.000 --> 00:29:39.920
As physical therapists, that's what we learned in school.
00:29:40.000 --> 00:29:40.720
That's what we did.
00:29:40.799 --> 00:29:43.279
Then they would do exercises, then I'd finish them with ice and stim.
00:29:43.519 --> 00:29:44.079
They would get up.
00:29:44.240 --> 00:29:46.480
Most of the time they would feel better when they walk out.
00:29:46.559 --> 00:29:52.880
And either by the time they sat down in their car or they got home from their drive home, the symptoms started creeping back.
00:29:53.920 --> 00:30:00.559
And we'd repeat that 12, 16, 20 times, however long the insurance would cover it for.
00:30:01.200 --> 00:30:08.880
I mean, I I'm embarrassed now as I look back and I I wish I had the list of my clients from back then so I could call them and tell them I am so sorry.
00:30:09.039 --> 00:30:10.160
I didn't know.
00:30:10.319 --> 00:30:11.519
I that's all I knew.
00:30:11.680 --> 00:30:18.160
I thought I was doing what I was supposed to, and I was, according to the guidelines, according to the insurance company.
00:30:18.720 --> 00:30:20.000
A couple funny stories.
00:30:20.160 --> 00:30:30.880
When I started treating people opposite, I was um a lot of insurance companies don't like it when you're working people's shoulders when they have problems in their low back.
00:30:31.839 --> 00:30:41.599
And one person called me from an insurance company, they had a lumbar or um no, they had they had a shoulder problem, so I was working on their neck.
00:30:42.160 --> 00:30:52.079
And they called me and said, Christine, why are you charging cervical um mobilization for shoulder problems?
00:30:53.359 --> 00:30:55.039
I said, Because they're related.
00:30:56.720 --> 00:31:00.160
They literally just kept on saying cervical over and over and over.
00:31:00.799 --> 00:31:02.400
And I said, Hold on a sec.
00:31:03.599 --> 00:31:06.880
I said, let me ask you a question.
00:31:07.039 --> 00:31:07.839
They said, okay.
00:31:08.079 --> 00:31:17.119
I said, when you're saying cervical, are you thinking of um a region that I should not be anywhere near in a female?
00:31:17.440 --> 00:31:19.200
And they went, yeah, isn't it?
00:31:19.359 --> 00:31:21.440
Isn't cervical related to cervix?
00:31:23.680 --> 00:31:30.640
I mean, I went, listen, the cervical region is your neck, those are your cervical vertebrae.
00:31:30.799 --> 00:31:35.599
I'm I don't know why I'm bringing this up, but it just sort of shows the insurance mentality.
00:31:35.680 --> 00:31:40.640
That it's like, wait a second, I was working on someone's neck because it was a shoulder problem.
00:31:40.720 --> 00:31:45.200
That's in close proximity, but their their thinking is wait a second.
00:31:45.839 --> 00:31:51.519
Anyway, uh But no, that's the whole point, though, is they're not looking at it in that holistic way like you mentioned.
00:31:51.759 --> 00:31:56.720
I just wrote down acupuncture, uh, which has been around for thousands of years.
00:31:56.960 --> 00:32:05.759
Uh it's uh they know the pressure points, they know the points that affect everything or that certain area, and that's basically what you're doing.
00:32:06.000 --> 00:32:12.720
Uh you're because it's all interconnected, and that's again from the medical side.
00:32:12.799 --> 00:32:16.559
We don't look at it's just oh no, it's like you said, the lower back.
00:32:16.640 --> 00:32:17.680
That's all you're gonna work on.
00:32:17.839 --> 00:32:21.680
No, there's so many other little points that can affect that.
00:32:22.000 --> 00:32:23.839
Absolutely, yeah.
00:32:24.480 --> 00:32:31.200
I I never thought of it as I never I never thought, hey, acupunct yeah, acupuncturists have been doing this for years.
00:32:31.440 --> 00:32:32.079
Yes.
00:32:32.480 --> 00:32:40.640
That um our body, I mean, there used to be a song, your um ankle bones connected to your shin bone, your shin to your ankle, your ankle.
00:32:41.039 --> 00:32:43.759
Yes, and it it is all interconnected.
00:32:44.000 --> 00:32:47.599
I one of the wildest things I've ever seen in my clinic.
00:32:47.759 --> 00:33:00.400
I had a dentist who um had his practice next door when I used to live in um Charlotte, and he would send me TMJ clinics, and this one lady literally cannot open her mouth more than a centimeter.
00:33:00.480 --> 00:33:06.480
She goes, I've been I have to suck all my um food in through a straw, and she went on and on.
00:33:06.640 --> 00:33:10.640
And finally, um she said, Look, it's been like this for three weeks.
00:33:10.720 --> 00:33:14.079
I didn't think you can help me, but now I need help.
00:33:14.480 --> 00:33:24.960
So um I um checked her out, found her biggest imbalance was in her legs with a leglet.
00:33:25.440 --> 00:33:32.160
So I worked her good leg and then retested the leg that was limited and it equaled out.
00:33:32.319 --> 00:33:34.720
I said, Alright, I got a really strange request here.
00:33:35.039 --> 00:33:35.680
She goes, What's that?
00:33:35.759 --> 00:33:36.720
I go, open your mouth.
00:33:36.880 --> 00:33:38.400
She opened her mouth full.
00:33:38.640 --> 00:33:42.480
She goes, I haven't opened my mouth that wide in years, let alone since.
00:33:42.720 --> 00:33:43.920
And she goes, How'd you do that?
00:33:44.079 --> 00:33:46.400
I said, you know, everything's connected.
00:33:46.559 --> 00:33:51.200
If you've got restrictions down below below your neck, guess what's going to happen?
00:33:51.440 --> 00:33:55.599
If you've got a problem here, that's gonna be stressed because of the imbalances.
00:33:55.759 --> 00:33:57.119
And she freaked out.
00:33:57.359 --> 00:33:59.839
She came back a couple days later with the same problem.
00:33:59.920 --> 00:34:00.640
I said, What happened?
00:34:00.799 --> 00:34:05.599
She goes, I was so excited I ate a hamburger and I had to put my mouth around it, and I hadn't chewed that much in so long.
00:34:05.759 --> 00:34:06.880
Now it's sore again.
00:34:07.359 --> 00:34:08.559
And then I went back to her legs.
00:34:08.719 --> 00:34:10.320
She goes, I didn't even think to do my legs.
00:34:10.400 --> 00:34:11.519
I was just rubbing my jaw.
00:34:11.599 --> 00:34:13.440
I said, Everybody does.
00:34:13.679 --> 00:34:16.880
I said, That's the side that's sore, rub this side.
00:34:16.960 --> 00:34:18.639
And now let's balance out your legs.
00:34:18.719 --> 00:34:21.039
We got her mouth opened wide again.
00:34:21.280 --> 00:34:25.119
So Again, I go back to our intuition.
00:34:25.280 --> 00:34:29.199
A lot of times we're telling ourselves this is wrong, and we're just not trusting that.
00:34:30.079 --> 00:34:30.960
Absolutely.
00:34:32.079 --> 00:34:32.719
Absolutely.
00:34:33.039 --> 00:34:35.599
I mean, I see that with how we went through our cancer treatment.
00:34:35.760 --> 00:34:48.239
I think we just ignored everything and just okay, this is how we have to do it, and we're gonna do it, and we're gonna be strong, and whatever, but we ended up with so many side effects, so many and again it's not against the doctors, that's just how they do it.
00:34:49.599 --> 00:34:50.239
Absolutely.
00:34:55.920 --> 00:34:58.400
Are people starting to listen a little bit more too?
00:35:00.480 --> 00:35:01.199
A little bit.
00:35:01.519 --> 00:35:12.400
I think I think after COVID a lot of people are just not trusting the the establishment as much as they used to.
00:35:13.280 --> 00:35:27.119
And um actually COVID was probably the the biggest factor in my business growing just simply because people are not afraid to jump on a Zoom call because Zoom became normal.
00:35:27.760 --> 00:35:35.440
And I still have a lot of clients or a lot of potential clients who I speak with, and they go, I I just want to do it locally because I want hands-on.
00:35:35.679 --> 00:35:37.519
I go, how long have you been doing this?
00:35:37.840 --> 00:35:39.039
It's been going on three years.
00:35:39.199 --> 00:35:44.480
I go, and that one-on-one touching in-person stuff has been working for you.
00:35:44.639 --> 00:35:46.559
They go, well, no, but I I want to keep doing it.
00:35:46.639 --> 00:35:47.440
I said, okay.
00:35:47.599 --> 00:35:53.360
I mean, it's hard to it's hard to break some people's patterns of thinking.
00:35:53.440 --> 00:36:01.199
And I mean, and I even confessed, hey, sometimes I go back to doing what I was programmed to do without thinking, because that's just the normal way.
00:36:01.360 --> 00:36:10.719
So it's not it's not that I haven't I don't have anything against these people, but I just want to try to convince them, look, you've been doing this thing over and over and over again.
00:36:10.960 --> 00:36:15.840
And I know Einstein's credited with it, but he I've heard that he never said it.
00:36:16.159 --> 00:36:20.960
But the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, expecting different results.
00:36:21.280 --> 00:36:23.280
Let's try something different.
00:36:23.519 --> 00:36:26.480
And I go, and you can try it for free.
00:36:26.800 --> 00:36:36.480
I'm not even gonna charge you, I'm not gonna charge your insurance because I don't deal with insurance, I'm not gonna charge your credit card, I don't even want your credit card, but for three days, what do you have to lose?
00:36:36.880 --> 00:36:42.960
So Yeah, I again it it keeps bringing back something I talk about a lot.
00:36:43.199 --> 00:36:50.000
We have put ourselves in this situation for 50 plus years, so it's gonna take a long time to get out of that.
00:36:50.400 --> 00:36:51.039
It will.
00:36:51.679 --> 00:37:16.320
I think the younger generation is a whole lot more skeptical, and they what I'm seeing is people my kids' age between 25 and 40, let's say, they seem to be much more skeptical, but at the same time, craving authenticity compared to what we were used to.
00:37:16.480 --> 00:37:19.679
We it was sort of it had nothing to do with authenticity for us.
00:37:19.760 --> 00:37:26.159
I I mean that word wasn't even I mean, authentic was around, but everybody now goes, hey, you've got to be your authentic self.
00:37:26.239 --> 00:37:28.719
It's like, well, what else can you be?
00:37:29.039 --> 00:37:32.400
But as far as medical stuff, it's like, hey, you know what I want?
00:37:32.559 --> 00:37:38.960
I want a doctor who's gonna at least acknowledge me and not just blow me off, not just say, hey, here's a pill.
00:37:39.119 --> 00:37:45.760
Oh, if that pill doesn't work or it gives you a problem, I have another pill that can fix the problem that that pill causes.
00:37:46.000 --> 00:37:49.280
Or you read the side effects of any of these medications.
00:37:50.079 --> 00:37:56.960
And I haven't read one yet that hasn't said can cause more of the same.
00:37:57.119 --> 00:38:00.559
Like depression medication, this this may cause suicidal thoughts.
00:38:00.639 --> 00:38:02.960
It's like you're gonna give that to someone who's depressed.
00:38:03.199 --> 00:38:08.559
Or and I'm not picking on any specific, I'm just like, that's just that's just what it is.
00:38:08.639 --> 00:38:10.239
And people are going, what are we doing?
00:38:10.400 --> 00:38:10.880
I agree.
00:38:11.039 --> 00:38:21.679
I I think as the rate of chronic illness continues to rise, it's gonna get people really, really thinking and wanting different.
00:38:22.159 --> 00:38:28.639
And I'm hoping for that because I hope they start listening to podcasts like this, listening to individuals like yourself.
00:38:28.880 --> 00:38:31.119
Because all we're doing is trying to get it out there.
00:38:31.519 --> 00:38:36.239
That's all we're trying to do, and we're trying to we're trying to alleviate the problem.
00:38:36.880 --> 00:38:42.559
I mean, it's yes, it's amazingly frustrating.
00:38:42.800 --> 00:38:49.920
And and I have a lot of um uh PT friends and acquaintances, and they go, What are you doing?
00:38:50.079 --> 00:38:51.039
I say, This is what I'm doing.
00:38:51.119 --> 00:38:51.679
Why are you doing that?
00:38:51.840 --> 00:38:54.000
I said, Well, number one, it works.
00:38:54.239 --> 00:38:56.320
Number two, lots of success.
00:38:56.400 --> 00:39:02.719
And I mean, I have hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of testimonials, videos, uh, written testimonials of people.
00:39:02.800 --> 00:39:08.480
I've I've helped since I started this approach, I've helped about it's been over 10,000 people.
00:39:08.639 --> 00:39:13.440
I know it's been over 52, almost 5,300 people now since going online.
00:39:14.320 --> 00:39:24.960
And I I see the results, and I just my my PT friends are like going, that just doesn't make sense.
00:39:25.199 --> 00:39:26.639
And I said, Well, you know what?
00:39:26.800 --> 00:39:31.840
Keep treating your sciatica clients the way they are, and if they don't get better, send them to me and then we can talk.
00:39:32.000 --> 00:39:35.119
Because they go, Dean, you're doing things totally backwards.
00:39:35.360 --> 00:39:38.239
I said, I know, and it's working so much better.
00:39:38.400 --> 00:39:42.400
I said, Look, you're talking to somebody who owned three clinics, a concierge practice.
00:39:42.480 --> 00:39:51.760
I was a director of PT for 12 years before I opened my practices, and I'm going, it's not like I don't know what I'm doing or what I'm talking about.
00:39:51.920 --> 00:39:55.039
And these are new, these are people coming out with their doctorate degrees.
00:39:55.119 --> 00:39:58.719
I don't have a doctorate degree, I only have a master's degree because I didn't offer a doctorate.
00:39:58.960 --> 00:40:04.800
And when I called my school and I said, Hey, can I take the extra classes that you added so I can become a doctor?
00:40:04.880 --> 00:40:06.400
They said, You've got to start all over.
00:40:06.480 --> 00:40:08.239
And I said, You are out of your mind.
00:40:09.280 --> 00:40:10.960
I said, No, I don't.
00:40:11.280 --> 00:40:14.239
So, yeah, I'm just a master, I'm not a doctor.
00:40:14.480 --> 00:40:20.559
And um, I tell these doctorate students, I go, guys, look, there's different ways you can do this.
00:40:20.639 --> 00:40:22.719
Yeah, but Dean, you've got to stretch what's tight.
00:40:22.880 --> 00:40:23.679
I go, okay.
00:40:24.000 --> 00:40:28.000
I said, why don't you just try doing it the opposite way?
00:40:28.159 --> 00:40:37.360
And what's funny is I'm in I'm in a clinic now, and I get a client, I tell the director of the clinic, I go, look, I do think they said, Dean, as long as you get results, I don't care what you do to these people.
00:40:37.519 --> 00:40:42.000
So I'm starting to do um the overall approach is called total motion release.
00:40:42.079 --> 00:40:43.760
That's the course that I took years ago.
00:40:43.920 --> 00:40:50.960
And I've sort of um turned it into my own for sciatica, but that that's the basis of what I do.
00:40:51.039 --> 00:40:52.480
It's called total motion release.
00:40:52.559 --> 00:41:02.400
And so I start doing these with clients, and they go back to their other therapist and go, hey, Dean, Dean made more gains in one session than you did in the last three weeks, digging on me, and look what I could do with my arm.
00:41:02.480 --> 00:41:03.199
Well, how do you do it?
00:41:03.360 --> 00:41:11.360
To work this side, and they're like, so now they're starting to ask, now they're starting to listen, and they're going, all right, the results are.
00:41:11.519 --> 00:41:19.679
I mean, when you have patients telling them to do something, it carries a lot more weight than me telling them this is how it should be done.
00:41:19.920 --> 00:41:33.760
So I was talking to somebody on a walk today, and a lot of it is we were talking about open-mindedness and how kids are going to school, we're worried about our kids or being indoctrinated with whatever.
00:41:34.639 --> 00:41:40.719
And that's what we're talking about here is they're just not people aren't free to think for themselves anymore.
00:41:40.880 --> 00:41:46.159
But that's what you're trying to get out there, especially if you see it doesn't work, open your mind to something different.
00:41:46.480 --> 00:41:47.199
Absolutely.
00:41:47.440 --> 00:41:49.760
It doesn't have to be something crazy either.
00:41:50.079 --> 00:41:52.559
Just try trying to alternate it's not gonna hurt.
00:41:52.880 --> 00:41:55.519
What you're doing is not working, by all means.
00:41:56.559 --> 00:41:59.840
God gave you a brain to to be creative with.
00:41:59.920 --> 00:42:02.159
You you can figure things out yourself, even.
00:42:02.559 --> 00:42:05.679
Especially when it's not gonna hurt that person or make it worse.
00:42:05.840 --> 00:42:06.880
That's the other side of this.
00:42:07.039 --> 00:42:08.719
There's no downside to trying it.
00:42:09.440 --> 00:42:10.320
Absolutely.
00:42:10.559 --> 00:42:11.599
Especially if you're suffering.
00:42:11.679 --> 00:42:17.679
It's like, okay, so you're gonna you might suffer a little bit less, you might suffer a little bit more, but that's the same when you go to different treatments.
00:42:17.920 --> 00:42:23.119
It's no, I mean, I'm not telling people to run away from doctors, but you know what?
00:42:23.280 --> 00:42:24.320
Find somebody different.
00:42:24.400 --> 00:42:34.559
If what you're doing is not working, I mean, how many times would you go to a dentist who botched up a tooth filling and then said, Oh, I gotta fix it.
00:42:34.719 --> 00:42:35.519
Oh, I gotta fix it.
00:42:35.599 --> 00:42:38.079
And each time it's another$250 or$300.
00:42:38.320 --> 00:42:42.079
It's like, how many times are you gonna go back before you go, you know what, Duck?
00:42:42.480 --> 00:42:44.880
I think I'm gonna try somebody else.
00:42:45.519 --> 00:42:45.920
100%.
00:42:46.800 --> 00:42:47.199
Anyway.
00:42:47.519 --> 00:42:53.440
Dean Volk, uh, why don't you let everybody know how to get a hold of you and learn more about uh what you have to offer?
00:42:53.679 --> 00:42:54.239
Well, thank you.
00:42:54.320 --> 00:42:57.039
And thank you for allowing me on, Jonathan.
00:42:57.199 --> 00:42:59.280
Um, you guys can get in touch with me.
00:42:59.440 --> 00:43:00.480

All right.
00:44:06.800 --> 00:44:20.159
Dean Volk, we got licensed physical therapist for the last 34 years, creator of 180 degree sciatica solutions, founder, sciatica relief now, creator of the scientific proof lab.
00:44:20.480 --> 00:44:22.079
It was an absolute pleasure to have you.
00:44:22.320 --> 00:44:23.679
Pleasure was all mine, Jonathan.
00:44:23.760 --> 00:44:25.039
We should do this again sometime.
00:44:25.360 --> 00:44:26.159
I would love to.
00:44:26.320 --> 00:44:28.000
I'll actually talk to you after this.
00:44:28.239 --> 00:44:28.559
All right.
00:44:28.719 --> 00:44:29.280
Sounds good.
00:44:29.599 --> 00:44:30.559
All right, everybody.
00:44:30.800 --> 00:44:32.000
Thank you all for listening.
00:44:32.079 --> 00:44:37.599
And as we continue our health and wellness journeys, find the attitude, keep the attitude, go out living.
00:44:37.760 --> 00:44:38.320
Bye, everybody.
00:00:10.880 --> 00:00:13.199
Hi everybody, Jonathan Brian, Go Out Living.
00:00:13.679 --> 00:00:16.000
Today's special guest is Dean Volk.
00:00:16.320 --> 00:00:31.280
He is a licensed physical therapist of 34 plus years, creator of 180-degree Psyatica solutions, founder of Psyatica Relief Now, and creator of the Psyatica Proof Lab, a three-day trial.
00:00:31.440 --> 00:00:32.079
Welcome, Dean.
00:00:32.240 --> 00:00:33.200
It's a pleasure to have you here.
00:00:33.600 --> 00:00:33.920
Thank you.
00:00:34.159 --> 00:00:35.600
Pleasure is all mine, Jonathan.
00:00:35.759 --> 00:00:36.479
Thank you for having me.
00:00:36.960 --> 00:00:45.840
So, like I was talking earlier, I thought we'd get started with um, you know, Psyatica is your thing, but you failed for several years.
00:00:45.920 --> 00:00:50.719
And it's not just saying you, it's pretty much the profession in general failed.
00:00:51.039 --> 00:00:55.759
Uh, maybe start with, you know, how that happened.
00:00:56.799 --> 00:01:28.000
00:01:28.239 --> 00:01:40.959
But literally, my sciatica clients, I would say 80 to 85% of them would not get the results that I was happy with, nor obviously they they were not happy, which made me not happy with where they were.
00:01:41.280 --> 00:01:45.760
So I struggled with that literally for 17 years of my career.
00:01:45.920 --> 00:01:48.799
I was doing everything that the gurus said.
00:01:48.879 --> 00:01:54.319
I would go to continuing education courses specifically for low back and sciatica, come back, try it.
00:01:54.480 --> 00:02:00.480
What was what was kind of sad was everybody was doing a very similar thing.
00:02:00.640 --> 00:02:10.800
They were attacking where the pain was, they were doing Mackenzie extension exercises or William Flexion exercises and basing everything they did off of those.
00:02:11.120 --> 00:02:20.400
And yeah, like I said, 17 years, I struggled with getting my clients the relief that they deserved and that I wanted to give them.
00:02:20.639 --> 00:02:32.560
And it wasn't until literally 17, 18 years ago, I went to a course, and the gentleman was teaching on everything 180 degrees opposite of what we learn in school.
00:02:32.719 --> 00:02:37.680
He basically started the course by saying, Everything you've done in therapy, throw it out the window because I want to retrain you.
00:02:37.919 --> 00:02:39.840
And at the time I had three clinics.
00:02:40.000 --> 00:02:41.120
I thought I was doing well.
00:02:41.199 --> 00:02:48.879
I was living in out right outside of Charlotte, North Carolina, and I just thought, 180 degrees opposite of everything that I'm doing?
00:02:49.039 --> 00:02:51.520
What is how can how does that work?
00:02:51.840 --> 00:03:03.280
And literally driving back to my clinic after the weekend, I was thinking, how in the world am I going to start introducing a treatment approach that's 180 degrees opposite of what I've been doing?
00:03:03.360 --> 00:03:09.360
Because my clients would either think I was mistreating them before or I'm mistreating them now, depending on what the results were.
00:03:10.000 --> 00:03:12.560
So I thought popped into my head.
00:03:12.719 --> 00:03:15.520
Literally, I was praying, going, God, how do I apply this?
00:03:15.840 --> 00:03:23.520
Thought popped into my head, hey, first person who comes in as a new client who doesn't know you, check it out and see what happens if you apply these principles.
00:03:23.759 --> 00:03:30.319
So I kid you not, 10 o'clock in the morning, a 16-year-old homeschool soccer player comes into my clinic.
00:03:30.560 --> 00:03:41.360
He's playing for a local private school in the area, and he's holding right above his kneecap, saying, Dean, this has nothing to do with sciatica, but it tells you about the approach that I was using.
00:03:41.520 --> 00:03:50.960
He was holding right above his knee, he said, Dean, my doctor says I've got a quadriceps tendon tear, and I can't play soccer for eight to ten weeks, but I'm the leading scorer on my high school team and I got a tournament in two weeks.
00:03:51.039 --> 00:03:51.680
What can you do?
00:03:51.840 --> 00:03:55.919
And I thought, perfect person to try this stuff on.
00:03:56.080 --> 00:04:01.280
And I'm thinking, I'm being a straight shooter, I was born in New York, though, raised in northern Minnesota.
00:04:01.360 --> 00:04:02.800
So I'm kind of a straight shooter.
00:04:02.879 --> 00:04:11.759
And I said, Look, your doctor told you eight to ten weeks to get on the soccer field, but I'm going to tell you that's how long it takes for a quadriceps tendon to heal.
00:04:11.919 --> 00:04:13.439
That doesn't mean you're going to be able to play.
00:04:13.520 --> 00:04:18.079
You've got to stretch it, you've got to get your proprioception, your stamina, your strength, everything else back.
00:04:18.240 --> 00:04:19.759
He just said, What can you do for me?
00:04:19.920 --> 00:04:20.959
And I said, All right.
00:04:21.279 --> 00:04:26.800
I did one exercise from the course that I learned, just trying to find an imbalance and fixing it.
00:04:26.879 --> 00:04:30.480
And then I made up an exercise because I thought, all right, it's his knee, let's work his other knee.
00:04:30.560 --> 00:04:32.959
I literally did straight leg lifts on his good leg.
00:04:33.120 --> 00:04:37.519
And he stood up and said, and I don't talk about this, but he looked and goes, What the H did you do to me?
00:04:37.759 --> 00:04:39.120
I go, What's wrong?
00:04:39.360 --> 00:04:43.680
He goes, The burning in my knee is gone and it's straight for the first time in two weeks.
00:04:43.920 --> 00:04:48.879
And literally my jaw just started to fall as he put his butt down to his heels.
00:04:49.120 --> 00:04:53.680
He stood up, he started doing mini squats, he started jumping, he started walking and sprinting around my clan.
00:04:53.839 --> 00:04:55.360
He goes, Can I go play soccer?
00:04:55.439 --> 00:05:04.720
And I said, Mmm, you gotta go back to the surgeon because I'm not putting my license and career on the line for this because I my jaw was on the floor.
00:05:04.800 --> 00:05:06.480
I literally had a trainer who was with me.
00:05:06.639 --> 00:05:08.480
She jabbed me in the chest, she goes, What do you do?
00:05:08.560 --> 00:05:11.600
And I go, I don't know.
00:05:12.319 --> 00:05:16.240
So that was my introduction to doing things 180 degrees opposite.
00:05:16.480 --> 00:05:20.399
And at that point, I started going, Hey, you know what?
00:05:20.639 --> 00:05:25.839
Maybe, just maybe, this might be the answer I've been looking for for my sciatica clients.
00:05:25.920 --> 00:05:35.680
So I started introducing my sciatica clients a couple exercises at a time, a couple imbalances at a time, and they started getting better and they wouldn't come back like they used to.
00:05:36.000 --> 00:05:39.759
It would be, I would I would get them better for a couple weeks, they'd come back and say, I've splared up again.
00:05:39.920 --> 00:05:45.600
This time it was like months and years before they would come back and say, Hey, I've been doing those exercises, you got any more?
00:05:46.240 --> 00:05:56.959
So that was 17 years ago, and in 2018, I was literally walking to work one day, just looking up online what um Google had to say about Syaka.
00:05:57.439 --> 00:06:09.600
And I went, it made me cringe because it's everything that we used to do: the cat-cow exercises, the press-ups, the nerve flossing, nerve gliding, the pelvic tilts, the bridges, all the core strengthening that I used to do.
00:06:09.680 --> 00:06:14.160
I'm going, I know this doesn't work for a high majority of people.
00:06:14.240 --> 00:06:16.879
So I thought, I'm gonna start a Facebook group.
00:06:17.120 --> 00:06:22.319
The only problem is I'm a little older than the average PT.
00:06:22.879 --> 00:06:24.160
How do you start a Facebook group?
00:06:24.240 --> 00:06:26.160
So I literally Googled, how do you start a Facebook group?
00:06:26.319 --> 00:06:36.079
So that morning, it took me all morning to set up a Facebook group, and little did I know that um three years later it would turn into a full-time job.
00:06:36.399 --> 00:06:38.319
So that's amazing.
00:06:39.839 --> 00:06:43.600
So uh a lot of people, I mean, this affects a lot of people.
00:06:44.160 --> 00:06:50.959
And you just mentioned a lot of ways that they were doing it or are still doing it, aren't they?
00:06:51.279 --> 00:06:51.839
They are.
00:06:52.240 --> 00:06:59.040
I I try to talk to PTs, I try to talk to Kairos, I try to talk to doctors, and they all look at me like I'm crazy.
00:06:59.199 --> 00:07:01.920
Why would you work on the non-painful side?
00:07:02.079 --> 00:07:03.199
Why would you do this?
00:07:03.279 --> 00:07:09.040
And I try to explain how your body gets out of balance when it compensates for itself for the pain.
00:07:09.279 --> 00:07:13.920
And so if your body's pulling like this and you've got a problem somewhere in your body, guess what happens?
00:07:14.079 --> 00:07:20.240
That area of problem is gonna have to protect itself against all this extra body tension and stress.
00:07:20.560 --> 00:07:25.920
I said, so if you fix that tension and stress, guess what happens to the area of the body that's problematic?
00:07:26.079 --> 00:07:28.720
It doesn't have to protect, it can relax.
00:07:28.800 --> 00:07:30.959
And it when it relaxes, guess what happens?
00:07:31.120 --> 00:07:33.839
You get normal blood flow, you get normal nerve conduction.
00:07:34.000 --> 00:07:44.560
Your central nervous system doesn't, is not in the fire flight, high alert set um session that it's been in for days, weeks, months, years, however long you've been suffering.
00:07:45.040 --> 00:07:46.639
And they go, Yeah, but it doesn't make sense.
00:07:46.720 --> 00:07:49.920
Why are you gonna stretch something that's not tight?
00:07:50.160 --> 00:07:53.199
And here I'm gonna give a little demonstration here.
00:07:53.759 --> 00:07:56.319
I just happen to have a little towel that I use all the time.
00:07:56.959 --> 00:08:04.800
So what we learn in therapy, and what we learn in PT school, chiropractors learn, trainers learn, if you've got a tight muscle, what's the way to loosen it?
00:08:05.839 --> 00:08:06.959
You stretch it, right?
00:08:07.199 --> 00:08:12.959
So you're taking something that's tight, and in the case of sciatica, your hamstring's tight and irritated most of the time.
00:08:13.199 --> 00:08:18.800
You're taking it, making it tighter, hoping that that's gonna loosen it and relax it.
00:08:19.199 --> 00:08:26.160
And I always tell people, where in life do you take something that's tight to m and when you loosen it, you tighten it first.
00:08:27.040 --> 00:08:30.959
So, no, when you want to loosen something, you do the exact opposite of tightening.
00:08:31.680 --> 00:08:35.360
And so that's what I do, that's what I focus on, that's what makes the approach unique.
00:08:35.440 --> 00:08:42.960
It's literally it's called the 180-degree sciatica solution because we're doing everything the exact opposite of what you were doing.
00:08:43.200 --> 00:08:47.200
And when people people hear that, they go, Yeah, but why do you want to do that?
00:08:47.360 --> 00:08:49.840
I go, Well, is what you're doing working?
00:08:50.080 --> 00:08:50.720
Well, no.
00:08:50.879 --> 00:09:01.440
I said, Well, so if your goal is to get here and you're doing something and you're doing this or doing that, don't you want to sort of make a U-turn and try to move towards us?
00:09:01.919 --> 00:09:06.080
And that start starts making people think, hmm, that makes a little bit of sense.
00:09:06.240 --> 00:09:16.720
Why do I want to keep on doing what's not working, praying it works one day, instead of trying something totally different that this weirdo online is telling me works?
00:09:17.360 --> 00:09:22.240
Well, especially when, like you said, there's over 80% chance of failure anyway.
00:09:22.399 --> 00:09:28.159
You know what this sounds to me like is you you look for the core issue, and that's what they're not doing.
00:09:28.320 --> 00:09:32.480
They're just going straight to okay, this is the the tight part, this is the pain.
00:09:32.799 --> 00:09:35.360
This is a symptom, let's let's take care of the symptoms.
00:09:35.519 --> 00:09:41.440
I I heard a story the other day, someone talking about, hey, that there was this garbage dump and they were having a rat problem.
00:09:42.639 --> 00:09:49.600
So it wasn't a garbage dump, there was some garbage in an alleyway, and they had a rat problem, and they decided, hey, we got to get rid of the rats.
00:09:49.679 --> 00:09:51.200
So they started setting rat traps.
00:09:51.440 --> 00:09:53.120
So they set rat traps, and guess what happened?
00:09:53.279 --> 00:09:54.480
More rats came.
00:09:54.720 --> 00:10:00.320
Yeah, you're getting rid of the rats, but more rats are gonna come because you're not taking care of the garbage problem.
00:10:00.799 --> 00:10:06.080
So, what I see with sciatica is we're treating the symptoms, we're treating the symptoms.
00:10:06.159 --> 00:10:08.000
Okay, we're calming the symptoms, but guess what comes?
00:10:08.159 --> 00:10:08.879
Guess what happens?
00:10:08.960 --> 00:10:14.559
It comes back the same or with a vengeance even worse, and it's just a cyclical cycle.
00:10:14.639 --> 00:10:16.879
Hey, let's give it an injection and calm it down.
00:10:17.120 --> 00:10:26.399
That's fine and dandy, but that's like putting novocaine in your jaw, punching yourself, saying, Look, I can do this, but then when the novocaine wears off, it all comes back.
00:10:26.960 --> 00:10:30.960
So, yes, to me, it's let's get rid of the garbage.
00:10:31.039 --> 00:10:36.399
The garbage is all the extra tension, all the imbalances, all the compensations your body's doing.
00:10:36.639 --> 00:10:39.759
Let's get rid of those and then see what happens to your symptoms.
00:10:39.919 --> 00:10:45.440
Whether it's coming from a muscle, a tendon, a disc, a joint, guess what's gonna happen?
00:10:45.519 --> 00:10:48.399
Those areas are gonna be able to relax and actually start to heal.
00:10:48.720 --> 00:10:59.120
Getting back to kind of when I think of sciatica, I don't know if people understand that exactly because it's actually more than just one thing.
00:10:59.919 --> 00:11:06.639
It there's so many, it's almost like it's a central part of a bigger issue.
00:11:07.200 --> 00:11:11.759
And everything just goes there and kind of extends from that.
00:11:11.919 --> 00:11:13.679
Is that kind of how you look at it?
00:11:14.000 --> 00:11:18.879
Yes, and I always tell people do you realize that sciatica is really not a diagnosis?
00:11:19.120 --> 00:11:25.440
Sciatica is basically that all sciatica means is you've got an irritation of your sciatic nerve.
00:11:25.679 --> 00:11:26.240
Boom.
00:11:26.399 --> 00:11:28.879
It doesn't tell you why, it doesn't tell you what.
00:11:29.120 --> 00:11:36.639
People's MRIs can be massively horrendous looking, but hey, it's not pinching on one of the nerve roots that causes it.
00:11:36.720 --> 00:11:37.919
So what's causing this?
00:11:38.159 --> 00:11:43.279
Other people have a totally clean MRI, and it's like, wait a second, what's causing this?
00:11:43.759 --> 00:11:50.399
So the cause oftentimes is unknown or not identifiable.
00:11:50.639 --> 00:11:55.200
And to me, it really doesn't matter because our bodies were made to heal themselves.
00:11:55.279 --> 00:11:56.799
It's just the way we were created.
00:11:56.960 --> 00:11:58.960
I mean, you get a cut, what happens?
00:11:59.120 --> 00:12:06.320
It bleeds to clean, the scab comes over, it heals, and if you leave it alone and don't keep picking at it, it'll heal.
00:12:06.559 --> 00:12:10.000
Our bodies were amazingly made.
00:12:10.320 --> 00:12:24.799
And if we treat our bodies right, if we get things that are out of balance back into balance, whether it's physically, mentally, emotionally, chemically, I mean, when our when our bot when our body chemistry is out of balance, guess what?
00:12:24.879 --> 00:12:32.480
If we balance it out, if we get the right minerals, if we get the right balance, the body is amazing at taking care of itself.
00:12:33.519 --> 00:12:35.519
So simple.
00:12:35.919 --> 00:12:37.440
It it's mine.
00:12:37.759 --> 00:12:42.320
I go, look, I said, this is gonna seem stupid to you because it's so common sense.
00:12:42.559 --> 00:12:44.639
If it hurts, stop doing it.
00:12:44.799 --> 00:12:46.879
They go, well, no, I was told to push through the pain.
00:12:47.039 --> 00:12:52.720
I go, and here you are talking to me five years later, you're still dealing with the same pain.
00:12:52.879 --> 00:12:54.320
When are you gonna stop?
00:12:55.759 --> 00:12:56.799
Okay, it is easy.
00:12:57.200 --> 00:12:57.519
Right.
00:12:57.679 --> 00:13:00.799
Well, okay, why is it still being taught wrong?
00:13:01.120 --> 00:13:02.320
Let's start there.
00:13:03.039 --> 00:13:03.840
You know what?
00:13:04.080 --> 00:13:07.039
That's what people know, that's what they're familiar with.
00:13:07.279 --> 00:13:13.360
And I'm not saying that doing a um a McKenzie extension exercise doesn't help.
00:13:13.600 --> 00:13:17.039
Because it can help some people, depending on the cause.
00:13:17.360 --> 00:13:20.320
Because everybody has their own movement biases.
00:13:20.480 --> 00:13:25.279
They're gonna they're gonna favor one position over another, one movement over another.
00:13:25.600 --> 00:13:35.279
And um if somebody doesn't understand that, and they just keep moving any which way they want, they're gonna keep irritating what's already irritated.
00:13:35.919 --> 00:13:48.399
So a lot of the things that we do that I do is I try to teach people, hey, you've got to learn what your triggers are, so that you stop doing those things and you start feeding positive triggers versus negative triggers.
00:13:48.720 --> 00:13:53.440
But schooling-wise, all of us learn very similar things.
00:13:53.600 --> 00:14:00.879
That's why when you go online and you look up um sciatica on YouTube, it's like, hey, here's the three best exercises you can do to get rid of your sciatic in 10 minutes.
00:14:01.039 --> 00:14:04.480
I'm like going, and everybody goes, Dean, why don't you put your exercises on there?
00:14:04.559 --> 00:14:09.360
I'm going, well, I don't have specific exercises that work for everybody.
00:14:09.679 --> 00:14:19.759
I have to, I have to teach you how to assess for your own imbalances because your body's gonna compensate differently than Tom, then Joe, then Sally, than Ricky.
00:14:20.000 --> 00:14:28.080
Um, everybody's body is gonna respond based on um their background, based on their muscular structure, based on their history.
00:14:28.240 --> 00:14:32.720
Nobody responds to pain, no two people respond identically to pain the same way.
00:14:32.960 --> 00:14:39.440
So some people I may be working on their shoulders more than their trunk, more than their legs, depending on where the imbalances are.
00:14:39.600 --> 00:14:46.080
So for me to go, hey, you know what, do these three things, you're gonna be fine, I'd be doing what everybody else does.
00:14:46.320 --> 00:14:48.240
And it just doesn't work like that.
00:14:48.559 --> 00:14:56.720
Well, yeah, I mean, that's the medical world in general, is okay, majority of people fit into this little thing, so let's just throw, we'll worry about that.
00:14:56.879 --> 00:14:59.440
We don't actually individualize it.
00:15:00.080 --> 00:15:00.399
Absolutely.
00:15:00.559 --> 00:15:04.639
It's like any medication, it's well, I always use caffeine or chocolate.
00:15:04.879 --> 00:15:05.679
You know what?
00:15:05.840 --> 00:15:10.559
I can have chocolate 10 minutes before bed, and I could sleep all night like a baby.
00:15:10.799 --> 00:15:13.519
My wife, if she eats chocolate after 1 p.m.
00:15:13.759 --> 00:15:17.200
in the afternoon, she's up till three in the morning because she's so wired.
00:15:17.440 --> 00:15:22.320
Caffeine, I can have a I bef when I stopped before I stopped drinking Coke.
00:15:22.639 --> 00:15:25.279
I would I could have a Coke any time of the evening.
00:15:25.360 --> 00:15:28.559
I could have two or three at dinner refills at a restaurant.
00:15:28.799 --> 00:15:29.519
Wouldn't affect me.
00:15:29.600 --> 00:15:34.480
If my wife took a sip of my Coke, she couldn't fall asleep for six hours.
00:15:34.799 --> 00:15:42.080
So it's not that I'm better, it's not that she's worse, it's just that everybody's body's chemistry, everybody's body responds differently.
00:15:42.159 --> 00:15:44.720
It's like, hey, you got a headache, take Tylenol.
00:15:44.799 --> 00:15:49.840
It's like, well, it might be poisonous to somebody where it's a miracle for another person.
00:15:50.399 --> 00:15:52.399
So amazing.
00:15:52.639 --> 00:15:58.720
Yeah, it's it's just sad how unindividualistic the medical world has become.
00:15:58.799 --> 00:16:04.879
Everybody follows the protocol, whether it's the hospital protocol, the doctor's protocol, or the insurance protocol.
00:16:05.039 --> 00:16:08.879
It's like, hey, this is what you do, these are the steps you take to get the best results.
00:16:09.039 --> 00:16:12.000
And I I did that for 17 years with my sciatica clients.
00:16:12.159 --> 00:16:17.679
I followed the rules, I followed the textbooks, and 17 years later I went, you know what?
00:16:17.840 --> 00:16:18.799
This ain't working.
00:16:18.879 --> 00:16:20.240
We got to do something better.
00:16:20.559 --> 00:16:27.679
Well, and the worst part is, like you say, I mean, it's it's shown to fail uh majority of the time.
00:16:27.840 --> 00:16:33.759
So to not understand that we need to switch things up and look at it differently, that that's the frustration right there.
00:16:34.000 --> 00:16:34.639
It's huge.
00:16:34.720 --> 00:16:41.759
And and with the medical world too, it's sort of here's what you're gonna do and pray it works.
00:16:42.000 --> 00:16:47.279
And seeing how I've taken on the full 180-degree um approach.
00:16:47.440 --> 00:16:55.759
So not only do I do the exact opposite of that, I actually offer people um the sciatica proof lab that you mentioned at the beginning.
00:16:55.919 --> 00:16:57.600
I offer people, hey, you know what?
00:16:57.759 --> 00:17:08.160
You've probably been scammed, you've probably been taken advantage of, you've probably been told that they this person can help you and that you do what this protocol says and you're gonna be fine.
00:17:08.319 --> 00:17:11.359
Oh, I mean, talk about skepticism nowadays.
00:17:11.440 --> 00:17:19.839
Everybody's getting scammed and it's skeptical, everybody's a skeptic, and they should be for their for their own sake, especially for their own sake, especially for their health.
00:17:20.000 --> 00:17:22.559
And so what I offer is I go, hey, you know what?
00:17:22.799 --> 00:17:24.720
Let's take this for a test drive.
00:17:24.799 --> 00:17:27.200
Let's take my approach for a test drive for three days.
00:17:27.279 --> 00:17:39.599
I will work with a person personally, three one half hour sessions live on Zoom like this, and I will walk them through a couple assessments, walk them through a couple things they can do to balance out imbalances.
00:17:39.759 --> 00:17:44.960
And over the three days, my average person is anywhere from 20 to 50% improved.
00:17:45.279 --> 00:17:48.880
And I say, okay, now I can't give it all away like this.
00:17:48.960 --> 00:17:49.680
I wish I could.
00:17:49.759 --> 00:17:56.319
I wish I had won the lottery when I was younger, and I'm a multimillionaire and I can um take care of everybody for free, but I gotta live.
00:17:56.640 --> 00:17:58.880
So here's what I have available after that.
00:17:59.039 --> 00:18:00.720
You want it, this is what it costs.
00:18:00.799 --> 00:18:02.640
If you don't want it, totally understand.
00:18:02.880 --> 00:18:05.759
Enjoy the 20 to 50% improvement that you have.
00:18:06.079 --> 00:18:09.359
So I have tried to flip things on its head and go, hey, you know what?
00:18:09.519 --> 00:18:23.119
I will I will give you a test drive so you don't have to commit to something and pray that it works like you have done with the injection, with the chiropractic decompression, with the physical therapy, with the um massage, with the Pilates, with everything else.
00:18:23.359 --> 00:18:30.640
Or and God forbid the surgery, which is only required in such a small, small, small percentage of people.
00:18:30.880 --> 00:18:34.799
That's why there's so many failed back surgery cases out there.
00:18:35.200 --> 00:18:35.440
Yeah.
00:18:36.000 --> 00:18:38.559
No, and I've seen those from the surge tech side.
00:18:38.799 --> 00:18:40.000
Yeah, it's amazing.
00:18:40.160 --> 00:18:47.359
And then they go back a second time to fix what wasn't fixed the first time, and I'm going, you use the same surgeon.
00:18:47.440 --> 00:18:50.160
I'm look, I'm not against surgery, I'm not against surgery.
00:18:50.240 --> 00:18:53.200
There are people out there who are saving lives, doing amazing things.
00:18:53.359 --> 00:18:57.519
But when it comes to if you have a failed back surgery, you go back to the same person.
00:18:58.640 --> 00:19:01.920
I I just go, What why?
00:19:02.079 --> 00:19:03.200
Well, they're doing a different surgery.
00:19:03.279 --> 00:19:06.319
I said, Of course they are, because they didn't fix you the first time.
00:19:06.400 --> 00:19:12.559
Now they have to do something more drastic, like a fusion, which is usually the third option after the failed microdisquectomy.
00:19:12.640 --> 00:19:14.000
Well, let's do a laminectomy.
00:19:14.079 --> 00:19:16.000
You know what, it's not stable back there anymore.
00:19:16.160 --> 00:19:18.240
Well, you took some bone out, doc.
00:19:18.640 --> 00:19:21.599
So now we gotta fuse it, and that's gonna hold you.
00:19:21.920 --> 00:19:28.079
But we can tell you that we'll probably take care of the pain down the leg, but your back pain will probably get worse.
00:19:28.240 --> 00:19:31.039
That's what uh it just Yeah.
00:19:31.200 --> 00:19:32.799
No, I want to pull my hair out.
00:19:33.039 --> 00:19:45.200
Yeah, and that's part of the problem though, is I can say from the patient side, you get into a diagnosis, into a situation, and you just kind of throw everything into okay, I gotta trust them and just go with it.
00:19:45.440 --> 00:19:50.400
That's the hardest part to get away from, and I know that from personal experience.
00:19:50.720 --> 00:19:51.359
Absolutely.
00:19:51.519 --> 00:19:58.160
And I mean, um, people older than our generation, I'm I'm assuming I'm a little older than you.
00:19:59.200 --> 00:19:59.839
How old are you?
00:20:00.880 --> 00:20:03.759
No, no, you're a kid, you're much younger than me.
00:20:04.079 --> 00:20:05.599
Um, I'm gonna be 60.
00:20:05.839 --> 00:20:06.160
Okay.
00:20:06.720 --> 00:20:20.880
So um our parents' generation, it was you go to the doctor, then again, medicine back then wasn't so um corporate corporate and wasn't so this is the protocol.
00:20:21.039 --> 00:20:25.119
They actually would come to your house or you would go to them and they would actually spend time with you.
00:20:25.279 --> 00:20:32.559
They wouldn't have to look at their computer to ask the right questions to make sure every T is crossed and dot is I so that the insurance company is going to recover it.
00:20:32.799 --> 00:20:34.960
They were actually practicing medicine.
00:20:35.200 --> 00:20:37.359
Whereas nowadays, nothing against doctors.
00:20:37.519 --> 00:20:40.960
This is what they're forced into doing, and it's follow the protocol.
00:20:41.039 --> 00:20:45.680
It's like, wait a second, but this person doesn't really fit what's going on.
00:20:46.000 --> 00:20:58.799
How do we inject, not inject, inject, but how do we intercept something that might we might be missing instead of going through this step-by-step protocol?
00:20:59.039 --> 00:21:05.759
So yeah, it's it's gotta be frustrating for doctors because I am not an anti-doctor.
00:21:05.839 --> 00:21:18.000
There there are phenomenal doctors out there trying to practice as best they can, but there are restrictions on them because they have to follow certain protocols in order to get reimbursed so they can live.
00:21:18.079 --> 00:21:24.640
And that's why there's so many now concierge doctors going out on their own, doing it their own way, because they got sick of the system.
00:21:25.039 --> 00:21:28.799
Well, I like how you brought up kind of back your day, my day.
00:21:28.960 --> 00:21:30.559
The doctor actually talked to you.
00:21:30.720 --> 00:21:34.319
He actually knew you from a personal standpoint.
00:21:34.559 --> 00:21:39.759
I'm guessing, because uh you do a lot of this online now, that it's a lot of conversation.
00:21:39.920 --> 00:21:47.039
You actually you don't need the it's not that quick 10 minute will, which they usually already know what they're gonna do.
00:21:47.279 --> 00:21:47.440
Right.
00:21:48.000 --> 00:21:49.119
We're gonna have worked this out.
00:21:49.200 --> 00:21:52.720
We're gonna figure out what really is uh the cause of this.
00:21:53.200 --> 00:21:53.599
Absolutely.
00:21:53.680 --> 00:21:53.920
Yeah.
00:21:54.000 --> 00:21:59.519
When I got out of school, I I had we I got really excited when we got.
00:22:00.160 --> 00:22:04.240
Um, a notepad that was filled with sciatica exercises.
00:22:04.400 --> 00:22:08.240
Because when someone came in with sciatica, we can rip it off, say, here's the exercise to do.
00:22:08.559 --> 00:22:11.200
And thinking that, hey, you know what?
00:22:11.279 --> 00:22:12.799
Look at the time it's saving me.
00:22:12.880 --> 00:22:16.240
Look at they have a printout, they can see what to do at home.
00:22:16.559 --> 00:22:23.519
But what we failed to do back then was to go through each exercise with them, make sure that it was helping them, not hurting them.
00:22:23.680 --> 00:22:26.880
Obviously, we told them, hey, if it if it causes pain, don't do it.
00:22:27.200 --> 00:22:36.240
But it wasn't like we needed to go through each and every step because, hey, we had a pre-printed format, and that's what a lot of medicine is now, and it's really sad.
00:22:36.799 --> 00:22:42.319
And yes, like you said, when I get on a call with somebody, we're talking about, hey, you know what?
00:22:42.400 --> 00:22:43.519
How are they sleeping?
00:22:43.680 --> 00:22:47.839
What kinds of foods are you eating that possibly could be causing this?
00:22:47.920 --> 00:22:50.000
What kind of stress is in your life?
00:22:50.240 --> 00:22:54.319
Have, I mean, last year I went through a stressful time, lost my mom.
00:22:54.480 --> 00:23:04.160
It's like, all right, when I know when people have stress, their nervous system is a little bit more um sensitive.
00:23:04.559 --> 00:23:12.880
And so any little thing can cause pain compared to when you're not in that emotional tight state, you can tolerate a lot more.
00:23:13.119 --> 00:23:18.319
And so we talk about stressors, we talk about how much they're in the sun, what kind of sleep are they getting.
00:23:18.400 --> 00:23:21.200
So it's much more than just, hey, you know what?
00:23:21.359 --> 00:23:23.119
Let's fix this imbalance and you're done.
00:23:23.200 --> 00:23:31.279
It's like, all right, now let's take care of you holistically with a W, because I'm looking at the whole body instead of H holistic.
00:23:31.519 --> 00:23:42.160
Not that I'm against H holistic, but I I always want to tell people, look, I'm looking at your whole body in regards to this, not just, oh, the painful butt and the painful leg.
00:23:42.480 --> 00:23:43.359
I love that.
00:23:43.599 --> 00:23:50.960
Well, and that's why you can do it online, is because you're really having those conversations and it's not.
00:23:51.200 --> 00:23:52.319
I mean, that's been the problem.
00:23:52.480 --> 00:23:59.200
Okay, we're gonna do hands-on, we're gonna do but this is they're doing it like you said, 180 degrees wrong.
00:23:59.759 --> 00:24:11.519
So you can do it from this situation because we're not sitting there stretching and pulling and doing all that physically, exactly.
00:24:11.680 --> 00:24:14.160
They can do it from their their own home.
00:24:14.480 --> 00:24:27.279
And what I found is when someone has pretty much any physical ailment, it's not bad to get passive things done, get the massage done, grab a massage gun and massage yourself, or have somebody else do something to you.
00:24:27.440 --> 00:24:32.400
But what I have found is that doesn't necessarily change your muscle pattern.
00:24:32.720 --> 00:24:41.759
It might relax a tight muscle, it might calm down things temporarily, but for long term, you've got to be able to balance out your own body.
00:24:41.839 --> 00:24:45.680
You've got to be able to make the changes in your muscles that are gonna hold you in place.
00:24:45.839 --> 00:24:55.359
And that's one thing that so many people with sciatica think is hey, you know what, if my struck if I just had a stronger core, if I got my stomach muscles stronger, then I'd be fine.
00:24:55.440 --> 00:25:04.319
I say, well, that's fine and dandy, but if you're trying to strengthen yourself when your body's out of balance, number one, your muscles are not functioning optimally.
00:25:04.480 --> 00:25:12.720
Number two, you're telling me you want to hold yourself in that imbalanced position, which is causing the added stress and the pain.
00:25:13.039 --> 00:25:21.519
So 180 degrees opposite is hey, you know what, we're gonna calm the symptoms down before we stabilize you so that we hold you in a position that's not painful.
00:25:23.200 --> 00:25:24.480
It makes sense.
00:25:24.799 --> 00:25:28.240
It I mean, as I say it, I go, this is stupid simple.
00:25:28.319 --> 00:25:29.839
This is common sense.
00:25:31.599 --> 00:25:33.119
But you but you know it's crazy.
00:25:33.200 --> 00:25:51.839
I I still, when I get working with some people, I'm doing some contract work here and there outside in a clinic or I'm going to people's homes, and I still I I am still retraining myself 17 years later to stop doing what I was taught because it's so ingrained in me.
00:25:52.880 --> 00:25:58.000
And yeah, it's it I I just have to laugh at myself at times.
00:25:58.079 --> 00:25:58.880
I'm going to waste something.
00:25:59.039 --> 00:26:05.039
I teach this to people online and I'm doing the exact same thing that I tell them not to do because that's just the way we're programmed.
00:26:05.119 --> 00:26:06.960
That's what we that's what we learn.
00:26:08.079 --> 00:26:20.640
So you're starting to see a change in attitudes, a change in how people are looking at medicine in general.
00:26:21.599 --> 00:26:24.480
They're starting to understand it is failing.
00:26:25.519 --> 00:26:29.599
And yeah, we are here just practicing medicine.
00:26:29.759 --> 00:26:30.319
That's what it is.
00:26:30.400 --> 00:26:31.039
It's practice.
00:26:31.119 --> 00:26:38.319
Like, all right, let me practice, let me let me go to someone who practiced a lot and thinks a little bit differently than what everybody else does.
00:26:38.559 --> 00:26:45.759
Because, yes, it feels like in the medical system, it's like, all right, you got sciatica, you're gonna go to your primary care doctor.
00:26:45.920 --> 00:26:52.720
Primary care doctor is probably gonna give you a combination or one of the muscle relaxers, anti-inflammatory pain medications, and do an x-ray.
00:26:52.880 --> 00:26:58.000
X-rays 99.9% times worthless for a cyaticline.
00:26:58.400 --> 00:27:00.640
But they do it because that's the standard protocol.
00:27:00.880 --> 00:27:02.640
Come back in two weeks if you're not feeling anybody.
00:27:02.880 --> 00:27:03.920
They come back in two weeks.
00:27:04.079 --> 00:27:12.160
Maybe they get sent to physical therapy, maybe they get changed up on the medication if it didn't work because obviously we got to try to cover up the pain.
00:27:12.480 --> 00:27:19.200
And the pain medication, the anti-inflammatory and the muscle relaxer do absolutely nothing for long-term healing.
00:27:19.359 --> 00:27:21.119
It's just to mask the problem.
00:27:21.440 --> 00:27:31.839
And the big problem with masking the problem is you have an underlying issue that you're still aggravating without realizing it because the symptoms are being masked.
00:27:32.480 --> 00:27:34.319
That's just like the epidural injections.
00:27:34.400 --> 00:27:36.480
They go, Well, the injections are really helping me.
00:27:36.559 --> 00:27:37.759
I go, yeah, but you have to keep getting them.
00:27:37.839 --> 00:27:39.759
Yeah, you have two or three a year.
00:27:40.079 --> 00:27:53.359
I said, and if you didn't get them, your pain would be significantly more than what it was when you started because you're continuing to do the things that were aggravating you to begin with, but you don't feel the pain because it's being masked.
00:27:53.839 --> 00:27:55.599
Yeah, but at least I can function.
00:27:55.759 --> 00:28:00.799
I said, but let's let's do the long term here.
00:28:01.200 --> 00:28:08.720
I mean, it reminds me of conversations when I used to own my clinics and someone would tell me that they had back pain, but it's under control because they've been seeing a chiropractor.
00:28:09.039 --> 00:28:14.079
And I have nothing personally against chiropractors, but in these cases, I go, how long have you been seeing the chiropractor?
00:28:14.240 --> 00:28:15.680
Well, for four years.
00:28:16.000 --> 00:28:16.960
Like, okay.
00:28:17.119 --> 00:28:20.640
I said, how do you feel today compared to what you did four years ago?
00:28:20.720 --> 00:28:23.359
Well, it's the same, but the chiropractor's helping me.
00:28:24.240 --> 00:28:25.680
I said, I gotcha.
00:28:26.160 --> 00:28:28.880
I said, So you've been going for four years.
00:28:28.960 --> 00:28:29.440
How often?
00:28:29.599 --> 00:28:32.160
Well, it's once or twice a week, depending on how it feels.
00:28:32.319 --> 00:28:33.119
I said, okay.
00:28:33.279 --> 00:28:37.680
So you've been doing this for four years, they've been helping you, but you feel the same.
00:28:38.079 --> 00:28:38.720
Yes.
00:28:39.200 --> 00:28:41.039
They go, are you telling me they're not helping me?
00:28:41.119 --> 00:28:43.119
I said, I'm not telling you they're not helping you.
00:28:43.200 --> 00:28:51.519
I'm just repeating back to you what you're telling me, that you're no different today than you were four years ago, but you said they're helping you.
00:28:51.759 --> 00:29:00.160
They might be giving you a manipulation and you feel good for a couple days and you can function, but you're not telling me you're any better than what you were four years ago.
00:29:00.240 --> 00:29:07.920
And that's my concern, and that my heart for you is I want you better than what you were last week, let alone four years ago.
00:29:08.240 --> 00:29:21.279
And it just, as I replay things in my head, I just go, wow, how come I didn't figure out that doing things totally differently seven the first 17 years of my career?
00:29:21.440 --> 00:29:28.799
I mean, I I was putting people on the traction unit, traction and heat for every low back and scientific client.
00:29:28.880 --> 00:29:29.920
They loved it.
00:29:30.079 --> 00:29:32.880
Then I would do some manual therapy, they thought it was awesome.
00:29:33.039 --> 00:29:37.920
Then back then we were doing ultrasound, which is not the picture, but the heat ultrasound.
00:29:38.000 --> 00:29:39.920
As physical therapists, that's what we learned in school.
00:29:40.000 --> 00:29:40.720
That's what we did.
00:29:40.799 --> 00:29:43.279
Then they would do exercises, then I'd finish them with ice and stim.
00:29:43.519 --> 00:29:44.079
They would get up.
00:29:44.240 --> 00:29:46.480
Most of the time they would feel better when they walk out.
00:29:46.559 --> 00:29:52.880
And either by the time they sat down in their car or they got home from their drive home, the symptoms started creeping back.
00:29:53.920 --> 00:30:00.559
And we'd repeat that 12, 16, 20 times, however long the insurance would cover it for.
00:30:01.200 --> 00:30:08.880
I mean, I I'm embarrassed now as I look back and I I wish I had the list of my clients from back then so I could call them and tell them I am so sorry.
00:30:09.039 --> 00:30:10.160
I didn't know.
00:30:10.319 --> 00:30:11.519
I that's all I knew.
00:30:11.680 --> 00:30:18.160
I thought I was doing what I was supposed to, and I was, according to the guidelines, according to the insurance company.
00:30:18.720 --> 00:30:20.000
A couple funny stories.
00:30:20.160 --> 00:30:30.880
When I started treating people opposite, I was um a lot of insurance companies don't like it when you're working people's shoulders when they have problems in their low back.
00:30:31.839 --> 00:30:41.599
And one person called me from an insurance company, they had a lumbar or um no, they had they had a shoulder problem, so I was working on their neck.
00:30:42.160 --> 00:30:52.079
And they called me and said, Christine, why are you charging cervical um mobilization for shoulder problems?
00:30:53.359 --> 00:30:55.039
I said, Because they're related.
00:30:56.720 --> 00:31:00.160
They literally just kept on saying cervical over and over and over.
00:31:00.799 --> 00:31:02.400
And I said, Hold on a sec.
00:31:03.599 --> 00:31:06.880
I said, let me ask you a question.
00:31:07.039 --> 00:31:07.839
They said, okay.
00:31:08.079 --> 00:31:17.119
I said, when you're saying cervical, are you thinking of um a region that I should not be anywhere near in a female?
00:31:17.440 --> 00:31:19.200
And they went, yeah, isn't it?
00:31:19.359 --> 00:31:21.440
Isn't cervical related to cervix?
00:31:23.680 --> 00:31:30.640
I mean, I went, listen, the cervical region is your neck, those are your cervical vertebrae.
00:31:30.799 --> 00:31:35.599
I'm I don't know why I'm bringing this up, but it just sort of shows the insurance mentality.
00:31:35.680 --> 00:31:40.640
That it's like, wait a second, I was working on someone's neck because it was a shoulder problem.
00:31:40.720 --> 00:31:45.200
That's in close proximity, but their their thinking is wait a second.
00:31:45.839 --> 00:31:51.519
Anyway, uh But no, that's the whole point, though, is they're not looking at it in that holistic way like you mentioned.
00:31:51.759 --> 00:31:56.720
I just wrote down acupuncture, uh, which has been around for thousands of years.
00:31:56.960 --> 00:32:05.759
Uh it's uh they know the pressure points, they know the points that affect everything or that certain area, and that's basically what you're doing.
00:32:06.000 --> 00:32:12.720
Uh you're because it's all interconnected, and that's again from the medical side.
00:32:12.799 --> 00:32:16.559
We don't look at it's just oh no, it's like you said, the lower back.
00:32:16.640 --> 00:32:17.680
That's all you're gonna work on.
00:32:17.839 --> 00:32:21.680
No, there's so many other little points that can affect that.
00:32:22.000 --> 00:32:23.839
Absolutely, yeah.
00:32:24.480 --> 00:32:31.200
I I never thought of it as I never I never thought, hey, acupunct yeah, acupuncturists have been doing this for years.
00:32:31.440 --> 00:32:32.079
Yes.
00:32:32.480 --> 00:32:40.640
That um our body, I mean, there used to be a song, your um ankle bones connected to your shin bone, your shin to your ankle, your ankle.
00:32:41.039 --> 00:32:43.759
Yes, and it it is all interconnected.
00:32:44.000 --> 00:32:47.599
I one of the wildest things I've ever seen in my clinic.
00:32:47.759 --> 00:33:00.400
I had a dentist who um had his practice next door when I used to live in um Charlotte, and he would send me TMJ clinics, and this one lady literally cannot open her mouth more than a centimeter.
00:33:00.480 --> 00:33:06.480
She goes, I've been I have to suck all my um food in through a straw, and she went on and on.
00:33:06.640 --> 00:33:10.640
And finally, um she said, Look, it's been like this for three weeks.
00:33:10.720 --> 00:33:14.079
I didn't think you can help me, but now I need help.
00:33:14.480 --> 00:33:24.960
So um I um checked her out, found her biggest imbalance was in her legs with a leglet.
00:33:25.440 --> 00:33:32.160
So I worked her good leg and then retested the leg that was limited and it equaled out.
00:33:32.319 --> 00:33:34.720
I said, Alright, I got a really strange request here.
00:33:35.039 --> 00:33:35.680
She goes, What's that?
00:33:35.759 --> 00:33:36.720
I go, open your mouth.
00:33:36.880 --> 00:33:38.400
She opened her mouth full.
00:33:38.640 --> 00:33:42.480
She goes, I haven't opened my mouth that wide in years, let alone since.
00:33:42.720 --> 00:33:43.920
And she goes, How'd you do that?
00:33:44.079 --> 00:33:46.400
I said, you know, everything's connected.
00:33:46.559 --> 00:33:51.200
If you've got restrictions down below below your neck, guess what's going to happen?
00:33:51.440 --> 00:33:55.599
If you've got a problem here, that's gonna be stressed because of the imbalances.
00:33:55.759 --> 00:33:57.119
And she freaked out.
00:33:57.359 --> 00:33:59.839
She came back a couple days later with the same problem.
00:33:59.920 --> 00:34:00.640
I said, What happened?
00:34:00.799 --> 00:34:05.599
She goes, I was so excited I ate a hamburger and I had to put my mouth around it, and I hadn't chewed that much in so long.
00:34:05.759 --> 00:34:06.880
Now it's sore again.
00:34:07.359 --> 00:34:08.559
And then I went back to her legs.
00:34:08.719 --> 00:34:10.320
She goes, I didn't even think to do my legs.
00:34:10.400 --> 00:34:11.519
I was just rubbing my jaw.
00:34:11.599 --> 00:34:13.440
I said, Everybody does.
00:34:13.679 --> 00:34:16.880
I said, That's the side that's sore, rub this side.
00:34:16.960 --> 00:34:18.639
And now let's balance out your legs.
00:34:18.719 --> 00:34:21.039
We got her mouth opened wide again.
00:34:21.280 --> 00:34:25.119
So Again, I go back to our intuition.
00:34:25.280 --> 00:34:29.199
A lot of times we're telling ourselves this is wrong, and we're just not trusting that.
00:34:30.079 --> 00:34:30.960
Absolutely.
00:34:32.079 --> 00:34:32.719
Absolutely.
00:34:33.039 --> 00:34:35.599
I mean, I see that with how we went through our cancer treatment.
00:34:35.760 --> 00:34:48.239
I think we just ignored everything and just okay, this is how we have to do it, and we're gonna do it, and we're gonna be strong, and whatever, but we ended up with so many side effects, so many and again it's not against the doctors, that's just how they do it.
00:34:49.599 --> 00:34:50.239
Absolutely.
00:34:55.920 --> 00:34:58.400
Are people starting to listen a little bit more too?
00:35:00.480 --> 00:35:01.199
A little bit.
00:35:01.519 --> 00:35:12.400
I think I think after COVID a lot of people are just not trusting the the establishment as much as they used to.
00:35:13.280 --> 00:35:27.119
And um actually COVID was probably the the biggest factor in my business growing just simply because people are not afraid to jump on a Zoom call because Zoom became normal.
00:35:27.760 --> 00:35:35.440
And I still have a lot of clients or a lot of potential clients who I speak with, and they go, I I just want to do it locally because I want hands-on.
00:35:35.679 --> 00:35:37.519
I go, how long have you been doing this?
00:35:37.840 --> 00:35:39.039
It's been going on three years.
00:35:39.199 --> 00:35:44.480
I go, and that one-on-one touching in-person stuff has been working for you.
00:35:44.639 --> 00:35:46.559
They go, well, no, but I I want to keep doing it.
00:35:46.639 --> 00:35:47.440
I said, okay.
00:35:47.599 --> 00:35:53.360
I mean, it's hard to it's hard to break some people's patterns of thinking.
00:35:53.440 --> 00:36:01.199
And I mean, and I even confessed, hey, sometimes I go back to doing what I was programmed to do without thinking, because that's just the normal way.
00:36:01.360 --> 00:36:10.719
So it's not it's not that I haven't I don't have anything against these people, but I just want to try to convince them, look, you've been doing this thing over and over and over again.
00:36:10.960 --> 00:36:15.840
And I know Einstein's credited with it, but he I've heard that he never said it.
00:36:16.159 --> 00:36:20.960
But the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, expecting different results.
00:36:21.280 --> 00:36:23.280
Let's try something different.
00:36:23.519 --> 00:36:26.480
And I go, and you can try it for free.
00:36:26.800 --> 00:36:36.480
I'm not even gonna charge you, I'm not gonna charge your insurance because I don't deal with insurance, I'm not gonna charge your credit card, I don't even want your credit card, but for three days, what do you have to lose?
00:36:36.880 --> 00:36:42.960
So Yeah, I again it it keeps bringing back something I talk about a lot.
00:36:43.199 --> 00:36:50.000
We have put ourselves in this situation for 50 plus years, so it's gonna take a long time to get out of that.
00:36:50.400 --> 00:36:51.039
It will.
00:36:51.679 --> 00:37:16.320
I think the younger generation is a whole lot more skeptical, and they what I'm seeing is people my kids' age between 25 and 40, let's say, they seem to be much more skeptical, but at the same time, craving authenticity compared to what we were used to.
00:37:16.480 --> 00:37:19.679
We it was sort of it had nothing to do with authenticity for us.
00:37:19.760 --> 00:37:26.159
I I mean that word wasn't even I mean, authentic was around, but everybody now goes, hey, you've got to be your authentic self.
00:37:26.239 --> 00:37:28.719
It's like, well, what else can you be?
00:37:29.039 --> 00:37:32.400
But as far as medical stuff, it's like, hey, you know what I want?
00:37:32.559 --> 00:37:38.960
I want a doctor who's gonna at least acknowledge me and not just blow me off, not just say, hey, here's a pill.
00:37:39.119 --> 00:37:45.760
Oh, if that pill doesn't work or it gives you a problem, I have another pill that can fix the problem that that pill causes.
00:37:46.000 --> 00:37:49.280
Or you read the side effects of any of these medications.
00:37:50.079 --> 00:37:56.960
And I haven't read one yet that hasn't said can cause more of the same.
00:37:57.119 --> 00:38:00.559
Like depression medication, this this may cause suicidal thoughts.
00:38:00.639 --> 00:38:02.960
It's like you're gonna give that to someone who's depressed.
00:38:03.199 --> 00:38:08.559
Or and I'm not picking on any specific, I'm just like, that's just that's just what it is.
00:38:08.639 --> 00:38:10.239
And people are going, what are we doing?
00:38:10.400 --> 00:38:10.880
I agree.
00:38:11.039 --> 00:38:21.679
I I think as the rate of chronic illness continues to rise, it's gonna get people really, really thinking and wanting different.
00:38:22.159 --> 00:38:28.639
And I'm hoping for that because I hope they start listening to podcasts like this, listening to individuals like yourself.
00:38:28.880 --> 00:38:31.119
Because all we're doing is trying to get it out there.
00:38:31.519 --> 00:38:36.239
That's all we're trying to do, and we're trying to we're trying to alleviate the problem.
00:38:36.880 --> 00:38:42.559
I mean, it's yes, it's amazingly frustrating.
00:38:42.800 --> 00:38:49.920
And and I have a lot of um uh PT friends and acquaintances, and they go, What are you doing?
00:38:50.079 --> 00:38:51.039
I say, This is what I'm doing.
00:38:51.119 --> 00:38:51.679
Why are you doing that?
00:38:51.840 --> 00:38:54.000
I said, Well, number one, it works.
00:38:54.239 --> 00:38:56.320
Number two, lots of success.
00:38:56.400 --> 00:39:02.719
And I mean, I have hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of testimonials, videos, uh, written testimonials of people.
00:39:02.800 --> 00:39:08.480
I've I've helped since I started this approach, I've helped about it's been over 10,000 people.
00:39:08.639 --> 00:39:13.440
I know it's been over 52, almost 5,300 people now since going online.
00:39:14.320 --> 00:39:24.960
And I I see the results, and I just my my PT friends are like going, that just doesn't make sense.
00:39:25.199 --> 00:39:26.639
And I said, Well, you know what?
00:39:26.800 --> 00:39:31.840
Keep treating your sciatica clients the way they are, and if they don't get better, send them to me and then we can talk.
00:39:32.000 --> 00:39:35.119
Because they go, Dean, you're doing things totally backwards.
00:39:35.360 --> 00:39:38.239
I said, I know, and it's working so much better.
00:39:38.400 --> 00:39:42.400
I said, Look, you're talking to somebody who owned three clinics, a concierge practice.
00:39:42.480 --> 00:39:51.760
I was a director of PT for 12 years before I opened my practices, and I'm going, it's not like I don't know what I'm doing or what I'm talking about.
00:39:51.920 --> 00:39:55.039
And these are new, these are people coming out with their doctorate degrees.
00:39:55.119 --> 00:39:58.719
I don't have a doctorate degree, I only have a master's degree because I didn't offer a doctorate.
00:39:58.960 --> 00:40:04.800
And when I called my school and I said, Hey, can I take the extra classes that you added so I can become a doctor?
00:40:04.880 --> 00:40:06.400
They said, You've got to start all over.
00:40:06.480 --> 00:40:08.239
And I said, You are out of your mind.
00:40:09.280 --> 00:40:10.960
I said, No, I don't.
00:40:11.280 --> 00:40:14.239
So, yeah, I'm just a master, I'm not a doctor.
00:40:14.480 --> 00:40:20.559
And um, I tell these doctorate students, I go, guys, look, there's different ways you can do this.
00:40:20.639 --> 00:40:22.719
Yeah, but Dean, you've got to stretch what's tight.
00:40:22.880 --> 00:40:23.679
I go, okay.
00:40:24.000 --> 00:40:28.000
I said, why don't you just try doing it the opposite way?
00:40:28.159 --> 00:40:37.360
And what's funny is I'm in I'm in a clinic now, and I get a client, I tell the director of the clinic, I go, look, I do think they said, Dean, as long as you get results, I don't care what you do to these people.
00:40:37.519 --> 00:40:42.000
So I'm starting to do um the overall approach is called total motion release.
00:40:42.079 --> 00:40:43.760
That's the course that I took years ago.
00:40:43.920 --> 00:40:50.960
And I've sort of um turned it into my own for sciatica, but that that's the basis of what I do.
00:40:51.039 --> 00:40:52.480
It's called total motion release.
00:40:52.559 --> 00:41:02.400
And so I start doing these with clients, and they go back to their other therapist and go, hey, Dean, Dean made more gains in one session than you did in the last three weeks, digging on me, and look what I could do with my arm.
00:41:02.480 --> 00:41:03.199
Well, how do you do it?
00:41:03.360 --> 00:41:11.360
To work this side, and they're like, so now they're starting to ask, now they're starting to listen, and they're going, all right, the results are.
00:41:11.519 --> 00:41:19.679
I mean, when you have patients telling them to do something, it carries a lot more weight than me telling them this is how it should be done.
00:41:19.920 --> 00:41:33.760
So I was talking to somebody on a walk today, and a lot of it is we were talking about open-mindedness and how kids are going to school, we're worried about our kids or being indoctrinated with whatever.
00:41:34.639 --> 00:41:40.719
And that's what we're talking about here is they're just not people aren't free to think for themselves anymore.
00:41:40.880 --> 00:41:46.159
But that's what you're trying to get out there, especially if you see it doesn't work, open your mind to something different.
00:41:46.480 --> 00:41:47.199
Absolutely.
00:41:47.440 --> 00:41:49.760
It doesn't have to be something crazy either.
00:41:50.079 --> 00:41:52.559
Just try trying to alternate it's not gonna hurt.
00:41:52.880 --> 00:41:55.519
What you're doing is not working, by all means.
00:41:56.559 --> 00:41:59.840
God gave you a brain to to be creative with.
00:41:59.920 --> 00:42:02.159
You you can figure things out yourself, even.
00:42:02.559 --> 00:42:05.679
Especially when it's not gonna hurt that person or make it worse.
00:42:05.840 --> 00:42:06.880
That's the other side of this.
00:42:07.039 --> 00:42:08.719
There's no downside to trying it.
00:42:09.440 --> 00:42:10.320
Absolutely.
00:42:10.559 --> 00:42:11.599
Especially if you're suffering.
00:42:11.679 --> 00:42:17.679
It's like, okay, so you're gonna you might suffer a little bit less, you might suffer a little bit more, but that's the same when you go to different treatments.
00:42:17.920 --> 00:42:23.119
It's no, I mean, I'm not telling people to run away from doctors, but you know what?
00:42:23.280 --> 00:42:24.320
Find somebody different.
00:42:24.400 --> 00:42:34.559
If what you're doing is not working, I mean, how many times would you go to a dentist who botched up a tooth filling and then said, Oh, I gotta fix it.
00:42:34.719 --> 00:42:35.519
Oh, I gotta fix it.
00:42:35.599 --> 00:42:38.079
And each time it's another$250 or$300.
00:42:38.320 --> 00:42:42.079
It's like, how many times are you gonna go back before you go, you know what, Duck?
00:42:42.480 --> 00:42:44.880
I think I'm gonna try somebody else.
00:42:45.519 --> 00:42:45.920
100%.
00:42:46.800 --> 00:42:47.199
Anyway.
00:42:47.519 --> 00:42:53.440
Dean Volk, uh, why don't you let everybody know how to get a hold of you and learn more about uh what you have to offer?
00:42:53.679 --> 00:42:54.239
Well, thank you.
00:42:54.320 --> 00:42:57.039
And thank you for allowing me on, Jonathan.
00:42:57.199 --> 00:42:59.280
Um, you guys can get in touch with me.
00:42:59.440 --> 00:43:00.480

You know what?

Go for it.
00:44:01.920 --> 00:44:03.440
I don't I don't care anymore.

I love it.
00:44:05.679 --> 00:44:06.320
All right.
00:44:06.800 --> 00:44:20.159

00:44:20.480 --> 00:44:22.079
It was an absolute pleasure to have you.
00:44:22.320 --> 00:44:23.679
Pleasure was all mine, Jonathan.
00:44:23.760 --> 00:44:25.039
We should do this again sometime.
00:44:25.360 --> 00:44:26.159
I would love to.
00:44:26.320 --> 00:44:28.000
I'll actually talk to you after this.
00:44:28.239 --> 00:44:28.559
All right.
00:44:28.719 --> 00:44:29.280
Sounds good.
00:44:29.599 --> 00:44:30.559
All right, everybody.
00:44:30.800 --> 00:44:32.000
Thank you all for listening.
00:44:32.079 --> 00:44:37.599
And as we continue our health and wellness journeys, find the attitude, keep the attitude, go out living.
00:44:37.760 --> 00:44:38.320
Bye, everybody.
