ABOUT THIS EPISODE
“Healthy” can be a marketing word, or it can be a label you can actually trust. We sit down with Isaac Hamlin, founder of Better Blend, to talk about building a smoothie shop that prioritizes nutrition facts, macros, and real ingredients without sacrificing flavor. He shares the origin story that starts on a rugby field at the University of Kentucky, where heavy pregame meals pushed him to find a faster, cleaner way to fuel performance. That search led to early experiments, relentless iteration, and a first blend that’s still on the menu today.
From there, Isaac gets candid about the business grind: getting dismissed by banks, taking on risk, working nights, and opening the first Better Blend in Florence, Kentucky. Now the brand spans 20 locations across Kentucky and Ohio, plus expansion into the Tampa, Florida area and a fleet of 11 food trucks. We unpack why the food trucks work as both revenue and a rolling brand-awareness engine, and how an ambassador program with micro-influencers helps educate new customers at scale.
But the real differentiator might be the culture. Isaac explains the “Saturday dinner” philosophy, creating a welcoming third space where people feel seen, supported, and empowered on a health and wellness journey. We also talk about smoothie industry misconceptions, why reading calories and sugar matters, and how small moments like writing encouragement on cups can change someone’s day.
If you care about healthy fast food, high-protein smoothies, or building a community-focused brand that grows, listen now, then subscribe, share this with a friend, and leave a review. What’s the biggest myth you’ve believed about “healthy” smoothies?

00:00:01.280 --> 00:00:06.959
This is the Good Neighbor Podcast, the place where local businesses and neighbors come together.
00:00:07.200 --> 00:00:10.480
Here's your host, Deborah Coviello.
00:00:13.279 --> 00:00:17.039
Hello and welcome to the Good Neighbor Podcast Live.
00:00:17.199 --> 00:00:20.000
Are you in need of healthy fast food?
00:00:20.160 --> 00:00:22.480
That business may be closer than you think.
00:00:22.640 --> 00:00:28.559
And today it is my honor to introduce to you your good neighbor, Isaac Hamlin of Better Blend.
00:00:28.879 --> 00:00:29.839
How's it going today?
00:00:30.079 --> 00:00:30.800
It's going great.
00:00:30.879 --> 00:00:31.760
Thanks for having me.
00:00:32.000 --> 00:00:34.159
Yeah, I think this is going to be a great conversation.
00:00:34.320 --> 00:00:36.640
I've looked a bit about your business.
00:00:36.960 --> 00:00:41.200
I'm really excited to hear the story, but I am going to pass the mic back over to you.
00:00:41.359 --> 00:00:44.000
We'd love to know more about you and your business.
00:00:44.320 --> 00:00:44.880
Yeah, sure.
00:00:45.039 --> 00:00:50.640
So I'll tell you a little bit kind of about Better Blend and then we can kind of dive into the backstory of all of it if that sounds good to you.
00:00:50.880 --> 00:00:51.439
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:00:51.759 --> 00:00:52.079
Perfect.
00:00:52.240 --> 00:00:59.759
So basically, from a nutset from a nutshell, uh Better Blend as a business is a smoothie shop, but they do things a little bit differently.
00:01:00.000 --> 00:01:04.480
We really focus on nutrition facts and creating something that's fast, easy, efficient.
00:01:04.640 --> 00:01:10.159
It tastes like it's bad for you, but it's good for you, and getting as much of that good stuff into a cup or a bowl as possible.
00:01:10.319 --> 00:01:17.599
Uh, we also want to be a kind of a third space for people to come and be welcomed to be their most empowered selves.
00:01:17.760 --> 00:01:22.480
So there's also the happier aspect of better blend and the healthier aspect of Better Blend.
00:01:22.719 --> 00:01:27.040
So um kind of how this all started, if you want to segue right into that.
00:01:27.280 --> 00:01:28.000
Absolutely.
00:01:28.799 --> 00:01:29.280
Let's go.
00:01:29.599 --> 00:01:33.519
It was uh it was eight years ago, and um actually it was a little longer than eight years ago.
00:01:33.599 --> 00:01:37.920
I was a senior at the University of Kentucky, and I was playing rugby.
00:01:38.000 --> 00:01:42.719
And if you don't know what rugby is, it's kind of like football without pads, mix of soccer in there.
00:01:42.879 --> 00:01:44.079
It's a strange sport.
00:01:44.319 --> 00:01:46.959
But I was a uh I was a pretty good rugby player.
00:01:47.040 --> 00:01:52.400
Like I was big and fast and strong, but there was something missing in my game, and I realized that it was my nutrition.
00:01:52.640 --> 00:01:59.200
Because we used to have pregame meals like spaghetti meatballs and pork chopped smashed potatoes and chipotle, whatever it might be.
00:01:59.359 --> 00:02:02.879
And for some people, that was fine, but for me, it really weighed on me.
00:02:03.120 --> 00:02:07.840
So I started to think, what's the most efficient way I can get all the nutrients I need into my bloodstream?
00:02:07.920 --> 00:02:09.599
And I started looking at smoothies.
00:02:09.759 --> 00:02:15.199
And I don't know if you know this or not, but most smoothies in the industry aren't super healthy for you.
00:02:15.280 --> 00:02:20.560
They, you know, they got a lot of calories, a lot of sugar, not a lot of nutrients to make up for uh what you're ingesting.
00:02:20.719 --> 00:02:25.919
So I started to think, what can I get or what can I do to get everything I need in a healthy meal into a cup?
00:02:26.159 --> 00:02:32.319
And I started coming up with some really nasty smoothies, just grass clippings and concrete.
00:02:32.560 --> 00:02:36.159
They weren't healthy, but they weren't, they weren't tasty.
00:02:36.240 --> 00:02:40.960
And the beauty of being 22 and trying to do something on your own is everybody will help and talk to you.
00:02:41.039 --> 00:02:49.919
So I made every connection, every phone call I could, people in the industry, um, anybody who wouldn't who would help me create this better, different smoothie.
00:02:50.240 --> 00:02:57.120
And after a bunch of iterations later, I finally came up with the first blend, which was the oatmeal raising cookie with the banana, which is still on our menu today.
00:02:57.199 --> 00:02:58.479
It's under the OG.
00:02:59.039 --> 00:03:00.719
And um it worked.
00:03:00.879 --> 00:03:08.800
I ended up being SEC All-American my senior year, and I realized that there was a market for this kind of thing because the world cares about how they look, but more importantly, they care about how they feel.
00:03:08.960 --> 00:03:14.879
And again, if I could create something else fast, easy, efficient, it tastes like it's bad for you, but it's good for you, we could help the world eat healthier, right?
00:03:14.960 --> 00:03:16.479
We got be healthier.
00:03:16.719 --> 00:03:24.719
So armed with my big idea, I moved back to northern Kentucky, that's where I'm from, and I go to Banks and I say, Hey, you know, I've got this big idea.
00:03:24.960 --> 00:03:26.879
Smoothies haven't really changed in a hundred years.
00:03:26.960 --> 00:03:30.960
They've always been sugar, fruit, juices, and ice, and I've got a way to change all that.
00:03:31.120 --> 00:03:34.159
And they were like, Cool, kid, we don't care.
00:03:34.960 --> 00:03:36.479
I was a 22-year-old kid.
00:03:36.560 --> 00:03:38.800
I'm pitching him a restaurant with no collateral.
00:03:38.960 --> 00:03:41.759
They were just like, good idea, kid, best of luck.
00:03:42.000 --> 00:03:44.479
And long story short, I didn't get any funding for it.
00:03:44.560 --> 00:03:47.439
So I did what I don't recommend any entrepreneur to do.
00:03:47.599 --> 00:03:50.879
I went and uh maxed out eight entry-level credit cards.
00:03:51.039 --> 00:03:58.479
I worked at Amazon at night and we built the first better blend during the day with my family uh in the spring of 2018.
00:03:58.960 --> 00:04:03.919
Um and then June 22nd, 2018, rolled around, we opened the first better blend in Florence, Kentucky.
00:04:04.080 --> 00:04:08.240
And uh since then we have 20 locations and 11 food trucks.
00:04:08.479 --> 00:04:13.280
And it has been uh we're in Kentucky, Ohio, and uh we just opened in Tampa, Florida.
00:04:13.840 --> 00:04:14.879
And that's our story.
00:04:15.199 --> 00:04:15.919
Oh, wow.
00:04:16.079 --> 00:04:18.720
Um, I mean, just it's a wonderful story.
00:04:18.959 --> 00:04:23.279
You could you nail that you must be saying this like a hundred times a day, but no, but it's great.
00:04:23.360 --> 00:04:28.720
I mean, obviously you're the owner, you're the creator, and uh you're the best marketing tool for this end today.
00:04:28.879 --> 00:04:36.959
But what I really like going back a bit when you talked about is that it's not just you know healthy body, but I I heard kind of like healthy mind, culture, happiness.
00:04:37.120 --> 00:04:38.720
I mean, how did that all weave in?
00:04:38.879 --> 00:04:43.759
Obviously, you could just provide a product, but it also sounds like you provide a bit of an experience.
00:04:44.160 --> 00:04:57.519
Yeah, the there's something called the better blend feel that we don't really have like a perfect name for or perfect uh recipe for, but it's a way you feel when you walk into someplace and it feels like uh we actually we call it our Saturday dinner philosophy.
00:04:57.759 --> 00:05:02.319
And we want people to feel like you're inviting guests into your home for Saturday dinner.
00:05:02.560 --> 00:05:09.040
And I always use this analogy, like everyone's had people over to their house, and I'm like, when your best friend walks through the door, you don't say, Hi, how are you?
00:05:09.120 --> 00:05:10.240
What can I get for you today?
00:05:10.399 --> 00:05:10.720
Right?
00:05:10.879 --> 00:05:28.160
You mention you you comment something about their sunglasses or what they're wearing or what they did last week or their ski shirt they're taking with their family, or something that makes them feel welcome and empowered and truly feel like they're in a place where they belong, especially when it comes to healthy eating, where there's so many people that are starting their health and wellness journey.
00:05:28.319 --> 00:05:41.519
And Better Blend, having flavors like brownie batter and peanut butter pie and having 250 calories and a full serving of protein, that's a great segue for those people, for anyone to come in and help with their health journey.
00:05:41.680 --> 00:05:51.439
But if we're cold to them, if we're not welcoming to them, if whatever capacity we don't make them feel like a million dollars, then we can have an adverse effect on their health journey and their life.
00:05:51.600 --> 00:05:56.720
And I think that's a lot of weight that we get to carry and a lot of pride we get to carry that we get to help people.
00:05:57.120 --> 00:06:04.000
I think it's a great differentiator, obviously, you know, product to meet a particular need.
00:06:04.240 --> 00:06:08.800
Um, but also again, you know, you can buy the product once, buy the product twice.
00:06:08.959 --> 00:06:11.680
Okay, I've done that, and you know, they may move on.
00:06:11.920 --> 00:06:22.720
But that feeling, that connectivity with the human the human person, when thinking about, hey, let's go hang out, hey, let's meet up, you would be top of mind because you know it's a welcoming, warm environment.
00:06:22.959 --> 00:06:23.120
Right.
00:06:23.439 --> 00:06:24.480
Such a cool business model.
00:06:24.560 --> 00:06:25.199
I love that.
00:06:26.000 --> 00:06:28.800
But um, obviously there's a lot of pluses here, a lot of positives.
00:06:28.959 --> 00:06:35.759
You've created a great business model, but also this is an opportunity to educate our listeners and um our viewers.
00:06:35.920 --> 00:06:45.600
Um, you know, any myths or misconceptions or anything you want to dispel uh about uh the industry uh in terms of smoothies, blends, bottles and stuff.
00:06:45.759 --> 00:06:46.000
Yeah.
00:06:46.319 --> 00:06:53.839
Yeah, I mean, I I again I never like to throw any shade on any competitors, but the smoothie industry for the last hundred years has not really changed.
00:06:54.000 --> 00:07:04.720
Um I always encourage people to just check the nutrition facts, check those macros, you know, calories, fat, sugars, carbs, um, all of those things, and really understand what's going into the products that they're ingesting.
00:07:05.040 --> 00:07:10.319
Because I think the younger generation, especially, I think it's really bleeding into every generation.
00:07:10.560 --> 00:07:13.600
We're starting to realize that time is our most valuable commodity.
00:07:13.839 --> 00:07:26.319
And how you feel in the time and the core memories you make, or whatever it might be, what we ingest and how it makes us feel is a direct reflection of how that time passes and how we feel in those experiences.
00:07:26.800 --> 00:07:41.279
And I think people are starting to make more or higher ROI decisions of like, this is gonna taste good, it's gonna fill me up, but it's gonna be healthy, is is climbing on the scale of restaurant decisions.
00:07:41.600 --> 00:07:48.160
And I always encourage, because there's a lot of there's a lot of businesses out there that aren't super transparent about health.
00:07:48.240 --> 00:07:51.920
And I'm just encouraged to do your research fully when you're making those decisions.
00:07:52.079 --> 00:07:54.959
Um shape anyway, but yes.
00:07:55.279 --> 00:08:02.800
No, I mean, again, we have to be educated consumers um because again, time money uh is uh a precious commodity.
00:08:02.959 --> 00:08:12.639
So, you know, the the other thing I want I'm curious about, you've obviously been successful, uh, maybe uh uh not necessarily an overnight success, a lot of sweat, tears, and time put in.
00:08:12.800 --> 00:08:15.680
Um, but like how do how have you grown your business?
00:08:15.839 --> 00:08:17.040
Like how what is your target?
00:08:17.439 --> 00:08:20.720
We we know what your target market is, but how do you get the word out?
00:08:20.800 --> 00:08:21.600
How do you market?
00:08:21.920 --> 00:08:24.000
How do you people find you?
00:08:24.240 --> 00:08:25.519
Yeah, great question.
00:08:25.680 --> 00:08:37.600
So um, you know, we do a lot of social media stuff, we do a lot of um, we really focus on field marketing, word of mouth, but we deal with two things that are a little unique business-wise, especially from a restaurant standpoint.
00:08:37.759 --> 00:08:44.879
Um, we have an ambassador program where basically uh we can have uh micro influencers.
00:08:45.039 --> 00:08:49.120
Um, we will exchange gift cards and in exchange for content.
00:08:49.279 --> 00:08:59.360
So basically we get to rent their audience for a few months and they post about BetterBlood and what they like or dislike, they answer questions to anybody who reaches out to them.
00:08:59.600 --> 00:09:05.919
And it really lets us let them be an ambassador and spread that education about health food and better blend in particular.
00:09:06.159 --> 00:09:13.519
And kind of the second thing that we do, which is really unorthodox, but we started doing food trucks last year and we got a bunch of them.
00:09:13.679 --> 00:09:22.320
And what we noticed really quickly was not only are food trucks a good revenue machine, but they are the ultimate brand awareness growth like lever.
00:09:22.799 --> 00:09:38.159
And when people are going out in their communities and they're trying to think of ways to bring new customers into their door, there's no more efficient option than to sell them a product and then explain to them what they're eating and then tell you where they can find you next.
00:09:38.320 --> 00:09:47.200
Because not only are you you have the revenue from the bowl that you sell, you have the conversation, the connection piece from the conversation, and you're able to drive them back to your store.
00:09:47.360 --> 00:09:51.440
It's like the perfect conversion piece for a new market when people have no idea who you are.
00:09:51.600 --> 00:10:00.159
And it's like the most expensive and most effective business card in the world as a food truck, especially when you have a brick and mortar that pairs with it.
00:10:00.320 --> 00:10:02.240
And we've seen a lot of success with that.
00:10:02.559 --> 00:10:07.360
Now, I'm just gonna ask another question because I know this is something that I had to do for building my business.
00:10:07.600 --> 00:10:15.919
You seem to have nailed it again in both the creative ways of marketing as well as all the social media, but you're a tremendous mouthpiece for the business.
00:10:16.000 --> 00:10:18.720
And I do see you do a bit of video on your social media.
00:10:18.879 --> 00:10:25.120
Um, have you ever thought about your own podcast as another lever to pull in that marketing strategy?
00:10:25.440 --> 00:10:25.840
Absolutely.
00:10:25.919 --> 00:10:31.279
We actually were having this conversation this morning about um with our marketing team.
00:10:31.440 --> 00:10:38.960
And over the next few years, there there will be a shift into uh myself creating a lot more content and having a lot more of these conversations.
00:10:39.120 --> 00:10:43.759
So I that's also why I'm very thankful that you would have me on to have a conversation with me here.
00:10:44.000 --> 00:10:46.000
Now, and again, you you show up really well.
00:10:46.080 --> 00:10:48.399
Uh so again, you make it easy for me.
00:10:48.639 --> 00:10:51.200
You know how to sell your business really, really well.
00:10:51.360 --> 00:10:53.919
Um, but the other thing, obviously, you're very personable.
00:10:54.000 --> 00:10:58.320
It's been very enjoyable to talk to you, but to know a little bit more about you.
00:10:58.480 --> 00:11:04.159
Now we know you do rugby, we know where you went to school, but what do you do for fun or your hobbies outside of work?
00:11:04.480 --> 00:11:07.519
So I I love being with friends and family.
00:11:07.600 --> 00:11:10.960
Um, family is also part of the business, which is super, super special.
00:11:11.120 --> 00:11:12.639
My sister is my CMO.
00:11:12.799 --> 00:11:14.480
Um, my mom helps her out.
00:11:14.639 --> 00:11:17.919
My dad is wise counselor and he also fixes everything when it breaks.
00:11:18.159 --> 00:11:25.200
So it's great to get out with them and to explore and um share a nice dinner or or travel with them.
00:11:25.279 --> 00:11:27.279
But also I really love to be competitive.
00:11:27.440 --> 00:11:30.559
I think business is the ultimate competition, so I'm in the right space.
00:11:30.720 --> 00:11:41.440
But when I'm not doing this or I'm not hanging out with friends or family, I I want to be competing in some capacity, whether it's like soccer, pickleball, playing the occasional rugby match.
00:11:41.600 --> 00:11:43.840
Um, I really, really enjoy just that.
00:11:43.919 --> 00:11:50.960
And I ever I always have since I was young, and I don't think that'll ever go away as long as I can keep running and jumping and throwing.
00:11:51.440 --> 00:11:58.080
Well, when we're done with this, I've got some other suggestions for areas for you and your family to compete, but more to come after the show.
00:11:58.480 --> 00:12:03.440
So um so so Isaac, I I mean I love this conversation, but we want to make it short and sweet.
00:12:03.600 --> 00:12:10.799
But the other thing though is um, you know, people remember this has been a great conversation, but often they'll remember the last thing that they heard and felt.
00:12:10.879 --> 00:12:19.200
So I'd love for you to share with our listeners, you know, one more thing that or a parting thought that you want to leave with them uh about better blend.
00:12:20.399 --> 00:12:21.039
Hmm.
00:12:21.840 --> 00:12:23.679
Parting thought about a better blend.
00:12:24.000 --> 00:12:26.480
Or just one thing that they should remember you by.
00:12:27.759 --> 00:12:28.240
Oh, yeah.
00:12:28.320 --> 00:12:35.519
I mean, just from a holistic standpoint and what we believe in, uh, we are very community focused and people focused.
00:12:35.679 --> 00:12:46.480
Um, nothing matters more to us than the empowering stories we get from our customers, whether it is um an encouraging word that they found on a cup.
00:12:46.559 --> 00:12:50.240
We write on all of our cups, little encouraging things, because you never know what somebody's going through.
00:12:50.320 --> 00:12:54.399
And we've gotten thousands of messages like, you have no idea what I was going through.
00:12:54.559 --> 00:12:57.200
I saw these three words and it completely changed my day.
00:12:57.440 --> 00:13:04.159
Little things like that to big things like people losing 80 pounds uh going or drinking, eating better blood.
00:13:04.320 --> 00:13:13.039
Um, people that are having horrible days and their their week or day or whatever is uplifted because we were able to have that connection relationship with them.
00:13:13.200 --> 00:13:20.240
Um, we've had a lot of people going through cancer remission, and a lot of people we've lost a few people to cancer as well.
00:13:20.480 --> 00:13:32.720
And it's always special to be able to be there for people during their lowest times for us, because our our goal is to help people and our goal is to change the world one person at a time.
00:13:32.879 --> 00:13:35.200
And um, we have an awesome team to do that.
00:13:35.279 --> 00:13:41.200
So I always encourage people to come in, say hi, uh, have a blender a bowl and and feel that for themselves.
00:13:41.600 --> 00:13:42.799
Such a great parting message.
00:13:42.879 --> 00:13:48.559
And again, you get sometimes I get chills when I listen to our guests' uh you know, words, but this is not the end.
00:13:48.639 --> 00:13:51.759
And and obviously, um, this has been a great conversation.
00:13:51.840 --> 00:13:55.360
