00:00:00.239 --> 00:00:02.959
One of my favorite movies is called Pay It Forward.
00:00:03.120 --> 00:00:08.240
You know, always doing something for others, not expecting anything in return.
00:00:08.400 --> 00:00:15.279
And I think that's that in and of itself is true Christianity in my book.
00:00:16.879 --> 00:00:18.399
Welcome to God at Work.
00:00:18.559 --> 00:00:21.440
Stories of calling, courage, and conviction.
00:00:21.679 --> 00:00:29.120
Through real stories and meaningful conversations, we'll discover how God shows up in the boardroom, the job site, and beyond.
00:00:29.359 --> 00:00:33.280
Here's your hosts, Gina Ventola and Adam Kemper.
00:00:41.600 --> 00:00:43.280
Welcome to God at Work.
00:00:43.439 --> 00:00:45.840
Today we're joined by Andrew Schmidt.
00:00:46.000 --> 00:01:02.000
Andrew is a business development and marketing consultant based in Denver, and he currently serves as a board member with Breacher.ai, where he helps ensure marketing efforts are aligned with sustainable growth, customer acquisition, and long-term business strategy.
00:01:02.240 --> 00:01:08.560
On a personal level, Andrew brings a unique life story shaped by adaptability, service, and movement.
00:01:08.799 --> 00:01:10.159
He was born on a U.S.
00:01:10.239 --> 00:01:20.000
military base in Germany, originally dreamed of becoming a fighter pilot, and grew up moving frequently, with the average place he lived being around two years.
00:01:20.159 --> 00:01:28.400
His mother discovered he was she was three months pregnant with him while serving on the front lines of Afghanistan during her deployment.
00:01:28.640 --> 00:01:30.159
What a fascinating story.
00:01:30.319 --> 00:01:33.200
Andrew, thank you so much for joining us today.
00:01:33.439 --> 00:01:34.799
Thank you for having me.
00:01:35.200 --> 00:01:36.719
Andrew, I'm so glad you're here.
00:01:36.799 --> 00:01:43.599
And I have a ton of questions for you, but I'm gonna kick this off the way we normally do.
00:01:43.840 --> 00:01:47.599
And that is, you know, our podcast is called God at Work.
00:01:47.840 --> 00:01:50.239
What does that phrase mean to you?
00:01:51.120 --> 00:01:53.760
That phrase to me means several things.
00:01:54.000 --> 00:02:09.599
Um one from the business standpoint of the parable of the talents, you know, not just letting your talents go to waste, but on the personal level of leading more of a Christ life situation.
00:02:10.080 --> 00:02:18.719
Um, one of my favorite movies is called Pay It Forward, you know, always doing something for others, not expecting anything in return.
00:02:18.960 --> 00:02:25.599
And I think that's that in and of itself is true Christianity in my book.
00:02:25.759 --> 00:02:33.039
Um, because of the fact that you know you're doing something just because of the fact that you can, not because you're expecting something in return.
00:02:33.680 --> 00:02:35.840
I think that's an excellent point.
00:02:36.639 --> 00:02:47.520
You had mentioned in off-camera about your love of theology and history and how that kind of goes into your work.
00:02:47.759 --> 00:02:49.439
Could you elaborate on that?
00:02:49.840 --> 00:02:50.960
Yeah, absolutely.
00:02:51.120 --> 00:02:59.039
Um, one of my favorite writers is Benjamin Franklin, especially in The Silence Do Good, where he talks about the separation of church and state.
00:02:59.280 --> 00:03:08.719
Um, one of the things in my studies that I have found is that it is very difficult to sit there and separate the two.
00:03:08.960 --> 00:03:17.840
You know, reason being is because of the fact that our morals and our beliefs affect the direction that we go.
00:03:18.080 --> 00:03:28.080
And all too often, you know, one of the issues that I have with some people is they have their work self and then they have their personal self.
00:03:28.319 --> 00:03:39.840
And they try to separate out the two when in reality we should be one and the same, because in order for God to do his true work, you've got to be your authentic self.
00:03:40.319 --> 00:03:41.520
Amen to that.
00:03:41.840 --> 00:03:46.719
And when you mean authentic self, could you elaborate on that?
00:03:47.520 --> 00:03:49.280
So absolutely.
00:03:49.520 --> 00:03:58.159
One of the things that I always tell my clients is that, you know, authenticity is true uh a thing that everybody goes through.
00:03:58.319 --> 00:04:09.360
You know, um, we all have a meter of knowing whether or not something's true or fake or doesn't seem to sit there match up, um, especially when you look at like celebrities.
00:04:09.520 --> 00:04:14.000
You know, they have their screen self, but then they have their personal self.
00:04:14.159 --> 00:04:21.120
And sometimes the two don't match, but other times you get ones that match perfectly, like with Robin Williams.
00:04:21.279 --> 00:04:26.240
You know, he was a great comedian, not just on screen, but off the screen.
00:04:26.560 --> 00:04:34.639
And where that truly shows and truly shines is people are actually able to see through everything.
00:04:34.959 --> 00:04:39.839
And it's one where that plays a huge role, especially in marketing.
00:04:40.319 --> 00:04:50.560
And as a person in marketing, Andrew, how would you reflect Christ in working with your clients?
00:04:52.800 --> 00:04:59.600
Um, a lot of times I try to be honest, show them the path, the education.
00:04:59.920 --> 00:05:11.920
Um, it's you know, working in the marketing departments and things like that, a lot of people try to go, oh hey, you know, it's easier just to throw something up and hope that it works.
00:05:12.160 --> 00:05:15.920
Uh, where I try to differ from it is I try to go look at the data.
00:05:16.079 --> 00:05:18.399
You know, what is people saying about you?
00:05:18.560 --> 00:05:20.560
What are things that they're looking at?
00:05:20.720 --> 00:05:26.480
You know, what's your value at that you're bringing to your customers and how do we bring that out?
00:05:26.720 --> 00:05:41.680
You know, as Christians, you know, it's difficult to sit there and sometimes say, hey, you know, how can we sit there and multiply our uh the aspects and our talents?
00:05:41.920 --> 00:05:48.160
You know, and I look at people going, you know, why do you not want to multiply it?
00:05:48.399 --> 00:05:57.199
You know, if you really take a look at the parable of the talents, the person who went and hid his talent and brought it back and didn't multiply it was scolded.
00:05:57.519 --> 00:06:06.560
You know, so our jobs as professionals, especially marketers, is how can we help you multiply that and figuring out that correct message?
00:06:06.800 --> 00:06:09.279
Sometimes we're successful, sometimes we're not.
00:06:09.519 --> 00:06:16.639
But the fact that we actually try, I think is more the point of the parable than anything else.
00:06:17.839 --> 00:06:18.959
I totally agree.
00:06:19.120 --> 00:06:33.279
I was thinking about that parable over the weekend, and it appears that the one who had the single talent who just hit it in the ground, even tells his boss, I did it because you're such a stern taskmaster.
00:06:33.360 --> 00:06:34.560
I was afraid.
00:06:34.879 --> 00:06:44.399
And so, what role does fear play in maybe working with a client and then being afraid to pull that trigger?
00:06:45.680 --> 00:06:48.000
So fear comes in many forms.
00:06:48.160 --> 00:06:53.279
Um and honestly and truly, the hardest part is the budget.
00:06:53.439 --> 00:07:16.879
You know, when it comes to letting go of the stuff that, oh, hey, I worked so hard and so much for this income to sit there and go, okay, hey, instead of turning it into okay, hey, God worked his miracle, let me reinvest it, it becomes an entirely different mentality.
00:07:17.120 --> 00:07:22.480
And so one of the things that I look for within clients is okay, what is your risk tolerance?
00:07:22.639 --> 00:07:40.240
You know, are you looking to, you know, multiply what you've already done and multiply your talents, or are you looking to invest it into the future, knowing that, hey, anything you do now, it's gonna take 30, 60, maybe 90 days to even bear fruit?
00:07:40.800 --> 00:07:49.519
You had mentioned, or it was mentioned in your introduction about how you had moved around a lot as a child.
00:07:50.000 --> 00:08:01.519
Do you think that ability for you to build relationships quickly add the value to what you offer your clients today?
00:08:02.639 --> 00:08:05.920
Um, I think that helps give me the flexibility.
00:08:06.079 --> 00:08:13.279
Um, honestly and truly, my entire life has been a miracle in an aspect.
00:08:13.680 --> 00:08:20.959
Um, especially, I know it was mentioned that my mom found out she was pregnant while at deployment in Afghanistan.
00:08:21.199 --> 00:08:46.639
Um, what's not mentioned there is that six months prior to her finding out, she was told she was sterile, ended up going on her month and a half deployment in Afghanistan, and because she found out she was three months pregnant on that deployment, because they never did a pregnancy test test before she went, it was an entirely shocked her.
00:08:47.200 --> 00:09:09.759
Um, but because of that adversity, it's kind of set me up to be able to not just look at things going, okay, hey, you know, tomorrow, you never know what's gonna happen tomorrow, but also being able to adjust things on the fly, going, okay, hey, the data's not going in the right direction.
00:09:10.080 --> 00:09:14.080
So now we can need to pivot for it to go the right direction.
00:09:14.399 --> 00:09:33.120
And sometimes, you know, what people don't realize, and this is the fighter pilot in me, a one-degree change in an airplane from Denver going to DC can be a change from going from DC all the way down to Atlanta, Georgia.
00:09:33.679 --> 00:09:38.559
And that's just one degree difference from the very beginning of a flight.
00:09:40.559 --> 00:09:42.000
Wow, I didn't know that.
00:09:42.159 --> 00:09:45.200
That one degree would make that much of a difference.
00:09:47.440 --> 00:09:49.039
That's incredible.
00:09:49.360 --> 00:10:13.120
Yes, and so it's one of those things where it's like understanding God's work, we may not see what it's doing, you know, just like in pay it forward, you know, it doesn't always review benefits right in the beginning, you know, and that beginning stage is of understanding, okay, hey, where's the threshold?
00:10:13.279 --> 00:10:14.559
Where is the message?
00:10:14.879 --> 00:10:26.080
How can we bring out you know the true meaning of what we're talking about really plays a factor because you know, one degree can change a lot.
00:10:26.639 --> 00:10:28.320
Well, I believe that's true.
00:10:28.799 --> 00:10:49.600
It made me think of the story of Jonah, where he wanted to go in the opposite direction, and God brought him around to his way of thinking in that trajectory of him finally having to fess up on the boat.
00:10:49.759 --> 00:10:51.759
Hey, it's it's it's me.
00:10:52.000 --> 00:10:54.159
I'm the problem, to quote Taylor Smith.
00:10:54.639 --> 00:11:04.879
I'm the problem, it's me, and then throwing him overboard, and then this you know the storm stops, and the whale's like, or the big fish, as the Bible actually says.
00:11:05.519 --> 00:11:06.960
Hey there, buddy.
00:11:08.399 --> 00:11:12.399
And um, I think that's kind of the point you're making.
00:11:12.639 --> 00:11:18.480
That what is that old phrase, we plan in God laughs.
00:11:18.799 --> 00:11:19.440
Yes.
00:11:19.919 --> 00:11:23.279
Well, and a prime example is Moses.
00:11:24.000 --> 00:11:35.759
Yeah, if it wasn't for his brothers, you know, sitting there selling him to a slave trader and going off, you know, there wouldn't have been that retribution at the end.
00:11:36.320 --> 00:11:58.080
You know, um, you know, there there's so many stories there where you know, even in the book of Proverbs, you know, where we falter, and part of being human human is faltering, but being able to go, okay, hey, I have fallen, how can I get back to where I need to go?
00:11:58.320 --> 00:12:12.559
You know, and a lot of times people wait till it's too late to sit there and make that change versus doing it in the very beginning when you can really set the patterns correctly.
00:12:12.960 --> 00:12:20.879
Andrew, what would you say is your biblical reference?
00:12:21.519 --> 00:12:22.639
Is it a verse?
00:12:22.799 --> 00:12:23.840
Is it a book?
00:12:24.159 --> 00:12:29.200
Is it a passage in the Bible that helps you drive your business?
00:12:30.480 --> 00:12:37.840
So there's two core um parables that have talked about.
00:12:38.000 --> 00:12:42.240
One is the parable of the talents, the other is a parable of the farmer.
00:12:42.399 --> 00:12:44.080
You know, there's two farmers.
00:12:44.320 --> 00:12:47.919
One sits there prays for rain, doesn't tend to his field.
00:12:48.080 --> 00:12:52.639
The other one, he prays for rain but continues to tend to his field.
00:12:52.879 --> 00:13:04.799
And so it's one where those two combine really show the um true essence of what fear can do.
00:13:04.960 --> 00:13:22.720
Because fear can actually paralyze you to where you could go, okay, hey, I know I need rain, I need rain, but if you're not actively preparing the field, you know, opportunity will just it'll come and then it'll disappear and it'll wipe away anything and everything that you have.
00:13:22.879 --> 00:13:34.960
But if you've already prepared the field, prepared the crops, you know, you then can get tenfold, hundredfold, you know, even two hundredfold of what you put into it.
00:13:35.120 --> 00:14:00.879
And that's where making sure you've got the proper systems in place, knowing that we're putting the proper things in place to capture the data that needs to be captured, you know, tending your field, tending to the people that you've talked to previously, you know, building up your business, you know, it's just like the difference of building a house on the bedrock versus a house on the beach.
00:14:01.279 --> 00:14:08.080
You know, if you're not solid, you know, it gets washed away.
00:14:08.480 --> 00:14:11.919
And so that's where you know the Bible really comes into play.
00:14:12.000 --> 00:14:20.879
It's like, even though there's biblical principles that we can talk about, these are all concepts that even the non-believer can understand.
00:14:21.039 --> 00:14:31.440
Of, hey, look, if I'm praying for rain, but I don't actually do the work to sit there and tend to the crops, what good is prayer gonna do for me?
00:14:31.919 --> 00:14:32.879
I would agree.
00:14:33.120 --> 00:14:55.519
I think that it's something we probably wrestle with in the workplace as far as being our authentic believers in the workplace, and so I like that you use those two parables to kind of break down your philosophy of God at work.
00:14:55.919 --> 00:15:01.120
Would you share a little bit about your company?
00:15:02.320 --> 00:15:03.360
Yes, absolutely.
00:15:03.519 --> 00:15:07.600
So my company that I own is called Schmidt Family Consulting.
00:15:07.759 --> 00:15:13.519
Um, and what we do is we literally take your business and would treat it as if you're family.
00:15:13.679 --> 00:15:22.000
That's part of the reason why I put family in there, is because the fact that, you know, at the end of the day, we're all brothers and sisters in Christ.
00:15:22.320 --> 00:15:40.559
And so my job there is to, you know, literally help take care of your business as if it were my own, and going, okay, here, you know, you need to have a proper CRM, you need to have a proper mailing list, do you actually have the proper sequences in place?
00:15:40.799 --> 00:15:43.360
Do you understand your customer journey?
00:15:43.519 --> 00:15:50.559
You know, we all have a journey in Christ, but it's all a matter of understanding what we are in our journey.
00:15:50.720 --> 00:15:52.320
Do we actually know that?
00:15:52.639 --> 00:15:57.200
Um, bringing in, you know, the proper messaging.
00:15:57.360 --> 00:16:14.799
If you're a public speaker, okay, and your target audience is you know, small business owners, are you putting out the message towards a small business owner or are you putting it out there towards people who are you know in their mid-sixties, 70s, looking to retire?
00:16:15.039 --> 00:16:20.159
You know, making sure you actually understand your audience and being able to talk to them.
00:16:20.399 --> 00:16:33.440
You know, a lot of people get those two things completely separated of, oh, hey, if I'm a Christian business owner, I can only talk to Christians when in reality you can service everybody.
00:16:33.679 --> 00:16:42.320
You know, it's just understanding, you know, who your target demographics are and being able to put it all into a proper plan.
00:16:42.720 --> 00:16:48.480
And so everybody that I work with, I look at them saying, Hey, look, let me give you a free audit.
00:16:48.720 --> 00:17:01.919
You know, let's dig into everything, see where your where your stance is, understanding you know, all of this, and let's put it on the paper so that way we can see it.
00:17:05.119 --> 00:17:12.559
Where would you say that you and God are working within your business?
00:17:15.839 --> 00:17:19.119
What is he currently working with you on?
00:17:20.400 --> 00:17:27.279
I I would say that for me personally, he's working on the patience role.
00:17:28.079 --> 00:17:41.279
Uh because the hardest part about the business that I do that I'm in, especially with marketing, is you literally have to have the patience because not everything's gonna come at once.
00:17:41.759 --> 00:17:54.480
You know, um, you truly have to be that farmer tending the field, you know, really setting things up, planting the seeds, and praying that it all works.
00:17:54.799 --> 00:18:09.200
Um you know, like I said before, there's times where I've had it with clients, you know, the seeds that we we sowed, you know, landed on rocks, didn't really produce anything.
00:18:09.279 --> 00:18:17.680
There's other times that it falls on fertile soil, it produces a hundred times better than what we anticipated.
00:18:18.160 --> 00:18:18.799
You know.
00:18:19.279 --> 00:18:29.119
Um, but it's understanding that, hey, that patients, sometimes you fail, but does do we stop at failure?
00:18:29.359 --> 00:18:39.680
You know, um one of the biggest things that I've learned is no is actually an acronym that stands for next opportunity.
00:18:41.279 --> 00:18:49.440
You know, um, and you just you can't, if someone says no, you just have to look at the next person and say, okay, hey, where's my next opportunity?
00:18:49.599 --> 00:18:53.279
Don't just stop because you got rejected.
00:18:53.519 --> 00:19:03.039
You know, Jesus was rejected three times by what was it, Peter, one of the most you know, faithful of them all.
00:19:03.279 --> 00:19:07.200
And it's one where even Jesus faced rejection.
00:19:07.519 --> 00:19:18.400
You know, it went from psalms of everybody laying down palm trees and all of that to dying on the cross.
00:19:18.559 --> 00:19:29.200
You know, one of the biggest rejections of them all is to be crucified over a person who was, you know, a known criminal.
00:19:30.160 --> 00:19:37.920
So it's one where not giving up that hope, you know, and keep moving forward and holding the belief.
00:19:39.039 --> 00:19:42.400
And I think faith plays a role in that too, as well.
00:19:42.880 --> 00:19:43.519
Yes.
00:19:46.079 --> 00:20:07.920
As you were saying that, I was thinking uh someone gave a talk on this very thing and talked about the role of the thief that was next to Jesus on the cross and what faith it took of him to turn to Jesus, who's on the cross just like he is, who's dying just like he is, and said, Remember me when you come into your kingdom.
00:20:09.359 --> 00:20:26.160
Yeah, so and that's a huge thing to think about because you know, Jesus talks about you know all the time, the person with the faith as much as a as small as a mustard seed, you know, will get into heaven.
00:20:26.559 --> 00:20:44.720
And you know, dealing with business owners, things like that, it's real easy to sit there and give up faith because of the fact that you know, as humans, we tend to go towards the negative, you know, and always think about the negative.
00:20:44.960 --> 00:20:55.200
And the interesting thing about that is it takes 10 good things happening to forget about a negative, yeah, and that's powerful in and of itself to know.
00:20:55.359 --> 00:21:11.119
And so it's one where keeping the faith, even though we may get knocked down, you know, it's very easy to sit there and give up, you know, because it's the devil's way of sitting there and attacking us.
00:21:11.440 --> 00:21:23.839
But it's interesting, especially when you look at sports, you know, baseball players themselves only succeed between 20 to 25 percent of the time that they're up at bat.
00:21:25.119 --> 00:21:31.680
You know, um it's interesting when you look at statistics like that.
00:21:33.519 --> 00:21:34.960
Absolutely.
00:21:35.519 --> 00:21:55.119
When you think about results like that, then your marketing channels maybe not hitting all the way, you know, might be helpful in that, might be might help give you perspective when you say oh 100%.
00:21:55.599 --> 00:22:10.160
And it's it's one of those things where you know people look at success as an overnight thing, but they don't look at the hours and hours of work that you did to prepare yourself for it.
00:22:10.799 --> 00:22:12.400
That's absolutely true.
00:22:12.640 --> 00:22:16.400
What would you like our audience to know about you and your business?
00:22:16.799 --> 00:22:22.720
The biggest thing that I would want for your audience to know is that you're not alone.
00:22:23.119 --> 00:22:31.039
You know, a lot of times we think about getting into business for ourselves, but you don't have to be.
00:22:31.200 --> 00:22:38.559
You know, one of the things that I love that Jesus talked about was where two or more are gathered in my name, there I will be.
00:22:39.039 --> 00:22:54.480
You know, and that is probably the biggest thing that I talk about when it comes to working with people is that two or more are a lot more powerful than just doing it by yourself.
00:22:55.359 --> 00:22:58.559
You know, um, especially when you take a look at horses.
00:22:58.799 --> 00:23:09.279
A single horse can sit there and pull around 3,500 pounds, but two horses together can pull almost 10,000 pounds.
00:23:11.519 --> 00:23:28.559
You know, it's one where that's where I look to work with people who want to progress forward, you know, who aren't afraid of okay, we'll have the occasional setback, you know, but want to keep moving forward.
00:23:28.799 --> 00:23:35.759
You know the best athletes that are out there, all their focus was improving by one percent.
00:23:36.640 --> 00:23:43.039
If I improve by one percent each day, you know, I'll I'll be better.
00:23:44.079 --> 00:23:47.440
And sometimes that's all it is, it's just a one percent growth.
00:23:49.680 --> 00:23:50.799
Absolutely.
00:23:51.519 --> 00:23:56.160
As we close our podcast out, Andrew, would you pray us out?
00:23:56.559 --> 00:23:57.680
Oh, absolutely.
00:23:59.039 --> 00:24:08.160
Dear Lord, and thank you for this opportunity with Gina and Adam to be able to come on here, spread your word.
00:24:08.400 --> 00:24:30.480
But most importantly, the biggest ask that we ask today is that you help inspire others to sit there and do the same, not to give up hope, not to sit there and cower and hide up their talents, but to sit there and have the courage to improve and go out there, take the risk to sit there and follow your glory.
00:24:31.359 --> 00:24:38.720
Because after all, we're all here to sit there and share your good news more than anything else.
00:24:39.200 --> 00:24:40.559
Any name we pray.
00:24:40.799 --> 00:24:41.440
Amen.
00:24:44.400 --> 00:24:51.119
This is God at Work, reminding you to lead with faith, serve with purpose, and live out your calling.
00:24:51.279 --> 00:25:00.480
Until we meet again, keep walking boldly in your faith at work and beyond, and remember your business is your ministry.
00:00:00.239 --> 00:00:02.959
One of my favorite movies is called Pay It Forward.
00:00:03.120 --> 00:00:08.240
You know, always doing something for others, not expecting anything in return.
00:00:08.400 --> 00:00:15.279
And I think that's that in and of itself is true Christianity in my book.
00:00:16.879 --> 00:00:18.399
Welcome to God at Work.
00:00:18.559 --> 00:00:21.440
Stories of calling, courage, and conviction.
00:00:21.679 --> 00:00:29.120
Through real stories and meaningful conversations, we'll discover how God shows up in the boardroom, the job site, and beyond.
00:00:29.359 --> 00:00:33.280
Here's your hosts, Gina Ventola and Adam Kemper.
00:00:41.600 --> 00:00:43.280
Welcome to God at Work.
00:00:43.439 --> 00:00:45.840
Today we're joined by Andrew Schmidt.
00:00:46.000 --> 00:01:02.000
Andrew is a business development and marketing consultant based in Denver, and he currently serves as a board member with Breacher.ai, where he helps ensure marketing efforts are aligned with sustainable growth, customer acquisition, and long-term business strategy.
00:01:02.240 --> 00:01:08.560
On a personal level, Andrew brings a unique life story shaped by adaptability, service, and movement.
00:01:08.799 --> 00:01:10.159
He was born on a U.S.
00:01:10.239 --> 00:01:20.000
military base in Germany, originally dreamed of becoming a fighter pilot, and grew up moving frequently, with the average place he lived being around two years.
00:01:20.159 --> 00:01:28.400
His mother discovered he was she was three months pregnant with him while serving on the front lines of Afghanistan during her deployment.
00:01:28.640 --> 00:01:30.159
What a fascinating story.
00:01:30.319 --> 00:01:33.200
Andrew, thank you so much for joining us today.
00:01:33.439 --> 00:01:34.799
Thank you for having me.
00:01:35.200 --> 00:01:36.719
Andrew, I'm so glad you're here.
00:01:36.799 --> 00:01:43.599
And I have a ton of questions for you, but I'm gonna kick this off the way we normally do.
00:01:43.840 --> 00:01:47.599
And that is, you know, our podcast is called God at Work.
00:01:47.840 --> 00:01:50.239
What does that phrase mean to you?
00:01:51.120 --> 00:01:53.760
That phrase to me means several things.
00:01:54.000 --> 00:02:09.599
Um one from the business standpoint of the parable of the talents, you know, not just letting your talents go to waste, but on the personal level of leading more of a Christ life situation.
00:02:10.080 --> 00:02:18.719
Um, one of my favorite movies is called Pay It Forward, you know, always doing something for others, not expecting anything in return.
00:02:18.960 --> 00:02:25.599
And I think that's that in and of itself is true Christianity in my book.
00:02:25.759 --> 00:02:33.039
Um, because of the fact that you know you're doing something just because of the fact that you can, not because you're expecting something in return.
00:02:33.680 --> 00:02:35.840
I think that's an excellent point.
00:02:36.639 --> 00:02:47.520
You had mentioned in off-camera about your love of theology and history and how that kind of goes into your work.
00:02:47.759 --> 00:02:49.439
Could you elaborate on that?
00:02:49.840 --> 00:02:50.960
Yeah, absolutely.
00:02:51.120 --> 00:02:59.039
Um, one of my favorite writers is Benjamin Franklin, especially in The Silence Do Good, where he talks about the separation of church and state.
00:02:59.280 --> 00:03:08.719
Um, one of the things in my studies that I have found is that it is very difficult to sit there and separate the two.
00:03:08.960 --> 00:03:17.840
You know, reason being is because of the fact that our morals and our beliefs affect the direction that we go.
00:03:18.080 --> 00:03:28.080
And all too often, you know, one of the issues that I have with some people is they have their work self and then they have their personal self.
00:03:28.319 --> 00:03:39.840
And they try to separate out the two when in reality we should be one and the same, because in order for God to do his true work, you've got to be your authentic self.
00:03:40.319 --> 00:03:41.520
Amen to that.
00:03:41.840 --> 00:03:46.719
And when you mean authentic self, could you elaborate on that?
00:03:47.520 --> 00:03:49.280
So absolutely.
00:03:49.520 --> 00:03:58.159
One of the things that I always tell my clients is that, you know, authenticity is true uh a thing that everybody goes through.
00:03:58.319 --> 00:04:09.360
You know, um, we all have a meter of knowing whether or not something's true or fake or doesn't seem to sit there match up, um, especially when you look at like celebrities.
00:04:09.520 --> 00:04:14.000
You know, they have their screen self, but then they have their personal self.
00:04:14.159 --> 00:04:21.120
And sometimes the two don't match, but other times you get ones that match perfectly, like with Robin Williams.
00:04:21.279 --> 00:04:26.240
You know, he was a great comedian, not just on screen, but off the screen.
00:04:26.560 --> 00:04:34.639
And where that truly shows and truly shines is people are actually able to see through everything.
00:04:34.959 --> 00:04:39.839
And it's one where that plays a huge role, especially in marketing.
00:04:40.319 --> 00:04:50.560
And as a person in marketing, Andrew, how would you reflect Christ in working with your clients?
00:04:52.800 --> 00:04:59.600
Um, a lot of times I try to be honest, show them the path, the education.
00:04:59.920 --> 00:05:11.920
Um, it's you know, working in the marketing departments and things like that, a lot of people try to go, oh hey, you know, it's easier just to throw something up and hope that it works.
00:05:12.160 --> 00:05:15.920
Uh, where I try to differ from it is I try to go look at the data.
00:05:16.079 --> 00:05:18.399
You know, what is people saying about you?
00:05:18.560 --> 00:05:20.560
What are things that they're looking at?
00:05:20.720 --> 00:05:26.480
You know, what's your value at that you're bringing to your customers and how do we bring that out?
00:05:26.720 --> 00:05:41.680
You know, as Christians, you know, it's difficult to sit there and sometimes say, hey, you know, how can we sit there and multiply our uh the aspects and our talents?
00:05:41.920 --> 00:05:48.160
You know, and I look at people going, you know, why do you not want to multiply it?
00:05:48.399 --> 00:05:57.199
You know, if you really take a look at the parable of the talents, the person who went and hid his talent and brought it back and didn't multiply it was scolded.
00:05:57.519 --> 00:06:06.560
You know, so our jobs as professionals, especially marketers, is how can we help you multiply that and figuring out that correct message?
00:06:06.800 --> 00:06:09.279
Sometimes we're successful, sometimes we're not.
00:06:09.519 --> 00:06:16.639
But the fact that we actually try, I think is more the point of the parable than anything else.
00:06:17.839 --> 00:06:18.959
I totally agree.
00:06:19.120 --> 00:06:33.279
I was thinking about that parable over the weekend, and it appears that the one who had the single talent who just hit it in the ground, even tells his boss, I did it because you're such a stern taskmaster.
00:06:33.360 --> 00:06:34.560
I was afraid.
00:06:34.879 --> 00:06:44.399
And so, what role does fear play in maybe working with a client and then being afraid to pull that trigger?
00:06:45.680 --> 00:06:48.000
So fear comes in many forms.
00:06:48.160 --> 00:06:53.279
Um and honestly and truly, the hardest part is the budget.
00:06:53.439 --> 00:07:16.879
You know, when it comes to letting go of the stuff that, oh, hey, I worked so hard and so much for this income to sit there and go, okay, hey, instead of turning it into okay, hey, God worked his miracle, let me reinvest it, it becomes an entirely different mentality.
00:07:17.120 --> 00:07:22.480
And so one of the things that I look for within clients is okay, what is your risk tolerance?
00:07:22.639 --> 00:07:40.240
You know, are you looking to, you know, multiply what you've already done and multiply your talents, or are you looking to invest it into the future, knowing that, hey, anything you do now, it's gonna take 30, 60, maybe 90 days to even bear fruit?
00:07:40.800 --> 00:07:49.519
You had mentioned, or it was mentioned in your introduction about how you had moved around a lot as a child.
00:07:50.000 --> 00:08:01.519
Do you think that ability for you to build relationships quickly add the value to what you offer your clients today?
00:08:02.639 --> 00:08:05.920
Um, I think that helps give me the flexibility.
00:08:06.079 --> 00:08:13.279
Um, honestly and truly, my entire life has been a miracle in an aspect.
00:08:13.680 --> 00:08:20.959
Um, especially, I know it was mentioned that my mom found out she was pregnant while at deployment in Afghanistan.
00:08:21.199 --> 00:08:46.639
Um, what's not mentioned there is that six months prior to her finding out, she was told she was sterile, ended up going on her month and a half deployment in Afghanistan, and because she found out she was three months pregnant on that deployment, because they never did a pregnancy test test before she went, it was an entirely shocked her.
00:08:47.200 --> 00:09:09.759
Um, but because of that adversity, it's kind of set me up to be able to not just look at things going, okay, hey, you know, tomorrow, you never know what's gonna happen tomorrow, but also being able to adjust things on the fly, going, okay, hey, the data's not going in the right direction.
00:09:10.080 --> 00:09:14.080
So now we can need to pivot for it to go the right direction.
00:09:14.399 --> 00:09:33.120
And sometimes, you know, what people don't realize, and this is the fighter pilot in me, a one-degree change in an airplane from Denver going to DC can be a change from going from DC all the way down to Atlanta, Georgia.
00:09:33.679 --> 00:09:38.559
And that's just one degree difference from the very beginning of a flight.
00:09:40.559 --> 00:09:42.000
Wow, I didn't know that.
00:09:42.159 --> 00:09:45.200
That one degree would make that much of a difference.
00:09:47.440 --> 00:09:49.039
That's incredible.
00:09:49.360 --> 00:10:13.120
Yes, and so it's one of those things where it's like understanding God's work, we may not see what it's doing, you know, just like in pay it forward, you know, it doesn't always review benefits right in the beginning, you know, and that beginning stage is of understanding, okay, hey, where's the threshold?
00:10:13.279 --> 00:10:14.559
Where is the message?
00:10:14.879 --> 00:10:26.080
How can we bring out you know the true meaning of what we're talking about really plays a factor because you know, one degree can change a lot.
00:10:26.639 --> 00:10:28.320
Well, I believe that's true.
00:10:28.799 --> 00:10:49.600
It made me think of the story of Jonah, where he wanted to go in the opposite direction, and God brought him around to his way of thinking in that trajectory of him finally having to fess up on the boat.
00:10:49.759 --> 00:10:51.759
Hey, it's it's it's me.
00:10:52.000 --> 00:10:54.159
I'm the problem, to quote Taylor Smith.
00:10:54.639 --> 00:11:04.879
I'm the problem, it's me, and then throwing him overboard, and then this you know the storm stops, and the whale's like, or the big fish, as the Bible actually says.
00:11:05.519 --> 00:11:06.960
Hey there, buddy.
00:11:08.399 --> 00:11:12.399
And um, I think that's kind of the point you're making.
00:11:12.639 --> 00:11:18.480
That what is that old phrase, we plan in God laughs.
00:11:18.799 --> 00:11:19.440
Yes.
00:11:19.919 --> 00:11:23.279
Well, and a prime example is Moses.
00:11:24.000 --> 00:11:35.759
Yeah, if it wasn't for his brothers, you know, sitting there selling him to a slave trader and going off, you know, there wouldn't have been that retribution at the end.
00:11:36.320 --> 00:11:58.080
You know, um, you know, there there's so many stories there where you know, even in the book of Proverbs, you know, where we falter, and part of being human human is faltering, but being able to go, okay, hey, I have fallen, how can I get back to where I need to go?
00:11:58.320 --> 00:12:12.559
You know, and a lot of times people wait till it's too late to sit there and make that change versus doing it in the very beginning when you can really set the patterns correctly.
00:12:12.960 --> 00:12:20.879
Andrew, what would you say is your biblical reference?
00:12:21.519 --> 00:12:22.639
Is it a verse?
00:12:22.799 --> 00:12:23.840
Is it a book?
00:12:24.159 --> 00:12:29.200
Is it a passage in the Bible that helps you drive your business?
00:12:30.480 --> 00:12:37.840
So there's two core um parables that have talked about.
00:12:38.000 --> 00:12:42.240
One is the parable of the talents, the other is a parable of the farmer.
00:12:42.399 --> 00:12:44.080
You know, there's two farmers.
00:12:44.320 --> 00:12:47.919
One sits there prays for rain, doesn't tend to his field.
00:12:48.080 --> 00:12:52.639
The other one, he prays for rain but continues to tend to his field.
00:12:52.879 --> 00:13:04.799
And so it's one where those two combine really show the um true essence of what fear can do.
00:13:04.960 --> 00:13:22.720
Because fear can actually paralyze you to where you could go, okay, hey, I know I need rain, I need rain, but if you're not actively preparing the field, you know, opportunity will just it'll come and then it'll disappear and it'll wipe away anything and everything that you have.
00:13:22.879 --> 00:13:34.960
But if you've already prepared the field, prepared the crops, you know, you then can get tenfold, hundredfold, you know, even two hundredfold of what you put into it.
00:13:35.120 --> 00:14:00.879
00:14:01.279 --> 00:14:08.080
You know, if you're not solid, you know, it gets washed away.
00:14:08.480 --> 00:14:11.919
And so that's where you know the Bible really comes into play.
00:14:12.000 --> 00:14:20.879
It's like, even though there's biblical principles that we can talk about, these are all concepts that even the non-believer can understand.
00:14:21.039 --> 00:14:31.440
Of, hey, look, if I'm praying for rain, but I don't actually do the work to sit there and tend to the crops, what good is prayer gonna do for me?
00:14:31.919 --> 00:14:32.879
I would agree.
00:14:33.120 --> 00:14:55.519
I think that it's something we probably wrestle with in the workplace as far as being our authentic believers in the workplace, and so I like that you use those two parables to kind of break down your philosophy of God at work.
00:14:55.919 --> 00:15:01.120
Would you share a little bit about your company?
00:15:02.320 --> 00:15:03.360
Yes, absolutely.
00:15:03.519 --> 00:15:07.600
So my company that I own is called Schmidt Family Consulting.
00:15:07.759 --> 00:15:13.519
Um, and what we do is we literally take your business and would treat it as if you're family.
00:15:13.679 --> 00:15:22.000
That's part of the reason why I put family in there, is because the fact that, you know, at the end of the day, we're all brothers and sisters in Christ.
00:15:22.320 --> 00:15:40.559
And so my job there is to, you know, literally help take care of your business as if it were my own, and going, okay, here, you know, you need to have a proper CRM, you need to have a proper mailing list, do you actually have the proper sequences in place?
00:15:40.799 --> 00:15:43.360
Do you understand your customer journey?
00:15:43.519 --> 00:15:50.559
You know, we all have a journey in Christ, but it's all a matter of understanding what we are in our journey.
00:15:50.720 --> 00:15:52.320
Do we actually know that?
00:15:52.639 --> 00:15:57.200
Um, bringing in, you know, the proper messaging.
00:15:57.360 --> 00:16:14.799
If you're a public speaker, okay, and your target audience is you know, small business owners, are you putting out the message towards a small business owner or are you putting it out there towards people who are you know in their mid-sixties, 70s, looking to retire?
00:16:15.039 --> 00:16:20.159
You know, making sure you actually understand your audience and being able to talk to them.
00:16:20.399 --> 00:16:33.440
You know, a lot of people get those two things completely separated of, oh, hey, if I'm a Christian business owner, I can only talk to Christians when in reality you can service everybody.
00:16:33.679 --> 00:16:42.320
You know, it's just understanding, you know, who your target demographics are and being able to put it all into a proper plan.
00:16:42.720 --> 00:16:48.480
And so everybody that I work with, I look at them saying, Hey, look, let me give you a free audit.
00:16:48.720 --> 00:17:01.919
You know, let's dig into everything, see where your where your stance is, understanding you know, all of this, and let's put it on the paper so that way we can see it.
00:17:05.119 --> 00:17:12.559
Where would you say that you and God are working within your business?
00:17:15.839 --> 00:17:19.119
What is he currently working with you on?
00:17:20.400 --> 00:17:27.279
I I would say that for me personally, he's working on the patience role.
00:17:28.079 --> 00:17:41.279
Uh because the hardest part about the business that I do that I'm in, especially with marketing, is you literally have to have the patience because not everything's gonna come at once.
00:17:41.759 --> 00:17:54.480
You know, um, you truly have to be that farmer tending the field, you know, really setting things up, planting the seeds, and praying that it all works.
00:17:54.799 --> 00:18:09.200
Um you know, like I said before, there's times where I've had it with clients, you know, the seeds that we we sowed, you know, landed on rocks, didn't really produce anything.
00:18:09.279 --> 00:18:17.680
There's other times that it falls on fertile soil, it produces a hundred times better than what we anticipated.
00:18:18.160 --> 00:18:18.799
You know.
00:18:19.279 --> 00:18:29.119
Um, but it's understanding that, hey, that patients, sometimes you fail, but does do we stop at failure?
00:18:29.359 --> 00:18:39.680
You know, um one of the biggest things that I've learned is no is actually an acronym that stands for next opportunity.
00:18:41.279 --> 00:18:49.440
You know, um, and you just you can't, if someone says no, you just have to look at the next person and say, okay, hey, where's my next opportunity?
00:18:49.599 --> 00:18:53.279
Don't just stop because you got rejected.
00:18:53.519 --> 00:19:03.039
You know, Jesus was rejected three times by what was it, Peter, one of the most you know, faithful of them all.
00:19:03.279 --> 00:19:07.200
And it's one where even Jesus faced rejection.
00:19:07.519 --> 00:19:18.400
You know, it went from psalms of everybody laying down palm trees and all of that to dying on the cross.
00:19:18.559 --> 00:19:29.200
You know, one of the biggest rejections of them all is to be crucified over a person who was, you know, a known criminal.
00:19:30.160 --> 00:19:37.920
So it's one where not giving up that hope, you know, and keep moving forward and holding the belief.
00:19:39.039 --> 00:19:42.400
And I think faith plays a role in that too, as well.
00:19:42.880 --> 00:19:43.519
Yes.
00:19:46.079 --> 00:20:07.920
00:20:09.359 --> 00:20:26.160
Yeah, so and that's a huge thing to think about because you know, Jesus talks about you know all the time, the person with the faith as much as a as small as a mustard seed, you know, will get into heaven.
00:20:26.559 --> 00:20:44.720
And you know, dealing with business owners, things like that, it's real easy to sit there and give up faith because of the fact that you know, as humans, we tend to go towards the negative, you know, and always think about the negative.
00:20:44.960 --> 00:20:55.200
And the interesting thing about that is it takes 10 good things happening to forget about a negative, yeah, and that's powerful in and of itself to know.
00:20:55.359 --> 00:21:11.119
And so it's one where keeping the faith, even though we may get knocked down, you know, it's very easy to sit there and give up, you know, because it's the devil's way of sitting there and attacking us.
00:21:11.440 --> 00:21:23.839
But it's interesting, especially when you look at sports, you know, baseball players themselves only succeed between 20 to 25 percent of the time that they're up at bat.
00:21:25.119 --> 00:21:31.680
You know, um it's interesting when you look at statistics like that.
00:21:33.519 --> 00:21:34.960
Absolutely.
00:21:35.519 --> 00:21:55.119
When you think about results like that, then your marketing channels maybe not hitting all the way, you know, might be helpful in that, might be might help give you perspective when you say oh 100%.
00:21:55.599 --> 00:22:10.160
And it's it's one of those things where you know people look at success as an overnight thing, but they don't look at the hours and hours of work that you did to prepare yourself for it.
00:22:10.799 --> 00:22:12.400
That's absolutely true.
00:22:12.640 --> 00:22:16.400
What would you like our audience to know about you and your business?
00:22:16.799 --> 00:22:22.720
The biggest thing that I would want for your audience to know is that you're not alone.
00:22:23.119 --> 00:22:31.039
You know, a lot of times we think about getting into business for ourselves, but you don't have to be.
00:22:31.200 --> 00:22:38.559
You know, one of the things that I love that Jesus talked about was where two or more are gathered in my name, there I will be.
00:22:39.039 --> 00:22:54.480
You know, and that is probably the biggest thing that I talk about when it comes to working with people is that two or more are a lot more powerful than just doing it by yourself.
00:22:55.359 --> 00:22:58.559
You know, um, especially when you take a look at horses.
00:22:58.799 --> 00:23:09.279
A single horse can sit there and pull around 3,500 pounds, but two horses together can pull almost 10,000 pounds.
00:23:11.519 --> 00:23:28.559
You know, it's one where that's where I look to work with people who want to progress forward, you know, who aren't afraid of okay, we'll have the occasional setback, you know, but want to keep moving forward.
00:23:28.799 --> 00:23:35.759
You know the best athletes that are out there, all their focus was improving by one percent.
00:23:36.640 --> 00:23:43.039
If I improve by one percent each day, you know, I'll I'll be better.
00:23:44.079 --> 00:23:47.440
And sometimes that's all it is, it's just a one percent growth.
00:23:49.680 --> 00:23:50.799
Absolutely.
00:23:51.519 --> 00:23:56.160
As we close our podcast out, Andrew, would you pray us out?
00:23:56.559 --> 00:23:57.680
Oh, absolutely.
00:23:59.039 --> 00:24:08.160
Dear Lord, and thank you for this opportunity with Gina and Adam to be able to come on here, spread your word.
00:24:08.400 --> 00:24:30.480
But most importantly, the biggest ask that we ask today is that you help inspire others to sit there and do the same, not to give up hope, not to sit there and cower and hide up their talents, but to sit there and have the courage to improve and go out there, take the risk to sit there and follow your glory.
00:24:31.359 --> 00:24:38.720
Because after all, we're all here to sit there and share your good news more than anything else.
00:24:39.200 --> 00:24:40.559
Any name we pray.
00:24:40.799 --> 00:24:41.440
Amen.
00:24:44.400 --> 00:24:51.119
This is God at Work, reminding you to lead with faith, serve with purpose, and live out your calling.
00:24:51.279 --> 00:25:00.480
Until we meet again, keep walking boldly in your faith at work and beyond, and remember your business is your ministry.
