Speaker 1: We are waiting Brian Dable and of course the rest of the Giant players downstairs for all the postgame reaction in Bob All the talk was about Jackson dark getting the start today, and understandably so. But you should never look to one player as being your savior, especially your rookie. And we talked extensively on the pregame show how he was gonna need some help and in this game, Bob he got it. Giants running backs ran for one hundred and seven yards in this game. The defense provided two takeaways to return the ball inside the red zone inside the ten yard line in fact of the LA Chargers. So Jackson Dart then added his own little twist with his running ability, some creative passes on the move, and you put all that together, that's the Giants walk away with the upset victory.

Speaker 3: Yeah, you're going against the team that's three and zero.

Speaker 4: As I said during the broadcast, this is a team that since the start of last year when Jim Harbaugh took over leading the NFL, allowing just seventeen points six points per game. They allowed less than twenty points in twelve games over this timeframe. The Giants get twenty one against him red zone. The Giants got a red zone touchdown and two red zone touchdowns in this game. This team was good on third downs since I mean, you went against a really good team with a top flight quarterback and you needed everybody to con trip and the Giants other than the end of the first half where Abdual Carter jumped off side and then Deontay Banks, I'm not sure what he was doing on that to allow that score. Yeah, they played a pretty sound game. Yeah they gave up the fifty four yard touchdown, and you don't dismiss it. But they're gonna make plays. This is a really good team. They're undefeated for a reason.

Speaker 4: He took a couple of sacks in this game that in a few weeks he's not gonna take, and in years down the road he's not gonna take. It was all new to him. It wasn't the preseason. It's Jesse Minter's defense. It's the Chargers, and you gotta just love what they did and the heart that they played with. Even at the end of the game, the way Cordell fly, he didn't try to defend that pass to Johnston. He was aware of the situation, not trying to pick it off, not trying to bat it. Let the guy catch it, and I'm gonna make sure I tackle him in bounds and the clock is gonna run out. And you know, kudos to the Giants for an really and special teams. Gillan with that sixty nine yard punt was big for the fifty yards net on that play correct. There was a lot of little things in this game that really added up. And then what can you say. Cam Scattaboo is dynamite, He's much, He's got a lot better vision, and he gets a lot skinnier than people think with his power game. There's a great team win against the Chargers team that was undefeated. And again I want to go back to the defense.

Speaker 1: The two takeaways, the Giants finished plus two in tonover ratio. Abdul Carter was a constant presence in the backfield on passing downs. Brian Burns, the big sack Dexter Lawrence. I thought Bob took another step. He was a little bit better in this game. Again, he had the interception, he had some pass pressure up the middle on a couple of plays. So I thought the defense and again they're going against an offensive line that's missing a lot of their guys, especially once Joel went out with with an ankle injury.

Speaker 1: You did what you needed to do. I know they gave up some rushing yards. You gotta fix that. But I thought that pressure on Herbert was probably as consistent as we've seen this.

Speaker 4: I thought Dexter Lawrence this was his best game, and I think his fourth game. I think he's finally got his Sea legs under him a little bit. Abdual card. I mean Brian Burns, you know, with a marquee game like this, even the way he played against the Chiefs, Brian Burns has headed to a Pro Bowl season. He's gonna finally get a chance to go to the Pro Bowl. And Cavon Thibodeau played well. I mean, this is a real you know who really had a good game too. John Drew Phillips played a really good game. A lot of passes defended, made the sliding interception. There's a lot of things that you take from this game, and you feel excited about going to play now in the New Orleans saying it's a team that you have an opportunity to go in there, You're fighting in your weight class. Hey, you can't cry over spilt milk. You think about that Cowboys game. You theoretically could be two and two right now, but you're one and three. But you know what now, you punched out, you went up in weight class, and you beat at somebody outside of your weight class.

Yeah, I thought the running backs ran higher. We only had two of them up they both ran Hirer and Motor and Scott line played pretty well. But again, defensive, I thought we created uh some pressure on Herbert. They hit us on a couple of explosives there in the second and you know the long run. So look, it's good to get a win. I'm happy for our players. I'm happy for our coaches. They put a lot of time and effort and energy into us. Jackson has you know, all quarterbacks do. But you know, for a young player to come out here in his first game against the three and oh team with Herbert as quarterback and the defense, you know, the way they were playing, I think it says a lot about our guys. I think it says a lot about six.

Speaker 6: I'm happy, I'm happy. I'm I'm happy to I'm happy to get a win, that's the goal. But I'm more happy for the assistant coaches, the players. You know, we put a lot of effort into this. Haven't got the results we want. We're close, you know, one game, not close in other games. But credit goes to, you know, the guys that are staying there late at night, the players that are busting their cans. I'm problem. I'm proud of all the guys that contributed, which is not just the guys that were out there, it's the practice squad guys. It's but get a lot of credit to our guys and try to build off of this next week. I know six is probably gonna be sore. I mean, he gutted it out. Sounds a tough son of a you know what, he's tough, But I knew that coach.

Wanted to try to you know, run the ball in this week, so we'll keep working on it. That will go a long way. We're getting down there. Got to continue to improve in that area.

Certainly not happy about it, whether it's Malik or anybody else, But unfortunately, this is a business of injury, and I feel terrible for a Malik's injury. We'll see where it's at. You know, he's an important piece of our team. But the guys that played behind them, you know, it's like last year when slay went in Seattle and the week after that whatever. Maybe everybody gets paid to do a job and it's the next man up.

Speaker 6: And you know, it's interesting with that play, it was a little bunch play. We've worked it one way for you know, I don't know ten years. That's we're running a play. And uh, you know, Dark Dart sees me in the locker room right before I come out here. He's like, you know on that play we ran thel and I talked about that what it was yesterday the day before and if we get this look, I want you to sit. We normally don't really sit on it. So that's a credit to two young players playing the game and having confidence in a critical time to do what they talked about where they're studying film and look, I got a lot of confidence in our rookie quarterback. But he's a rookie quarterback. So there's gonna be mistakes that be made. We know that there'll be more next week. There was some this week. It's not gonna be perfect. I've went through this before seven years ago, whatever may be. But the way he extended plays. You know that penalty on John I think what they call on John Michael seven yard run or whatever it was. Who was it on Dan? Okay, that was a big one because that was a huge play. But you know the run in in the end zone. Kids a competitor, it's not gonna be perfect. I'm sure he'll be the first one to tell you there's a lot that he can do better. We got to continue to help him do it better.

Speaker 6: I trust him, you know, I think something. I mean, there's different shots you take. You know, we watch them every week. There's gonna be shots when you run through. I mean that play that they jumped off sides or off sides was it a fourth down or whatever it was. The crowd was going crazy. You hit it for two yards, you know, there's different shots you don't want to take, is you want to try to minimize him. But part of what I love about him is what he did in college. Yeah, he's tough, he's a competitor. So I'm glad he's our own quarterback. Yes, and there's gonna be a lot of growing pains, I'm just telling you. But his job is go out there and do what we need to do to win as a quarterback, whether it's running a bunch, you know, make a big third down play. Again, there's a lot of things to improve on though from him, and he'll be the first to tell you so. But let's give credit to the other guys around him. How the backs ran the receiver's block, we ran the ball more. I don't know what do we run for?

And credit to the defense for closing it out getting two big turnovers, you know, Dexter rumbling down there. You know, I thought Jude did a good job. But again, it's one game. Our goal is to win that one game one week. I'm happy. We did certainly a lot of things to clean up. You know, we're close in other games, not close in other ones. But the goal is just to continue to improve. And I'm happy for the players and the coaches.

And I'll give you know. I saw Burns after and I saw him during the during the game. He is spent. I'm not, you know, not saying it's the flu game, but that young man is spent. I mean he looks the part right now.

I mean we ran him on scrambles, so we stayed away from that in terms of I would say for the most part, because there was stuff that we did a few things at the end there to that with all we needed to do get an extra blocker. I'm sure he'll be sort tomorrow. But you know, I don't know. We got the holding penalty, But for that guy to go however far it was, I think that just shows his grit. But I'm not surprised.

Speaker 6: Seemed like you had answers to what they were bringing you in the passing game all day and are like comparison to what just like how we played defensively today is addressing defend or as what do you mean? That's why I'm asking you.

Speaker 6: They played hard and I thought they did their job. Again, it wasn't perfect. We gave up a big one at the end of the half. We gave a big one backed up, but I thought, you know, it starts up front, controlling a line of scrimmage, getting pressure on the quarterback. Again, they had a couple of big runs that that hurt us. You know, we got to get that fixed because that'll get you. And I would say at the end of the half that fourth and two, you know saying earmuffs stay off side, and we just got to do a better job of that and some of our young guys and keep on working with them. Thought the defensive coaches did a good job. I thought the players played hard. They made some plays in terms of the back end of breaking up plays, and they got after the quarterback a little bit, which always helps. So what does that answer?

We try to win every week, and we fell short a number of weeks. And it really doesn't matter what you do next week. You got to get ready to play, compete, you know, make plays during the game, play good situational football. May not many secret recipes to win in this league. It's hard. You gotta do a good job all the way around.

Again, that's a tough, tough defense every three and oh for a reason, And they were one of the better teams in the red zone for a reason. First opening drive of the game and frank with the last couple of years, Jackson Dart drives him right down, runs it in for the touchdown for his first ever career touchdown as an NFL player. The Giants took a seven to nothing lead and they will not relinquish that lead for the remainder of this game. Back here on Giants extra point. John Schmel, Bob Papa, Tiki Barber, and guys, we just heard from Brian Dable at the podium. We are waiting for Jackson Dart to arrive to speak to the media as well. But Tikky, you can just hear Brian Dable and the way he talks about Jackson Dart and it's the competitiveness and the toughness that seems to really be.

And ultimately, it just feels different. It is different. I was choking with Evan and my crew for Wfan that Mike Kafka is going to get a head coaching job because of the season that Jackson Dart is going to have. Think how different the play calling was in the red zone with the QB draw throughout the game. It's just you can do so much more when you have a quarterback who is quick with his decisions to get rid of the football when he doesn't have a read that he likes in a passing game, he'll take it down and go run. Had fifty plus yards rushing today, and the energy around this team is different with him at quarterback.

Speaker 18: Who knows? At the right time they got to win today. So it was the absolute right time for this team and for Jackson Dart.

Speaker 1: You know, Bob, he's gonna figure out the you know, reading the defenses, putting the foot in the dirt as soon as in the drop and throwing the ball on time and evading some of those sacks and getting the ball out a little bit quickly. But Brian dam when he first named Dart the starter, he mentioned it. In fact, we had it in our game open that he's gonna make loose plays.

Speaker 1: And this game was full of loose plays from Jackson Darts, whether it was scrambles and runs for first downs or scrambles, and then on the way up in the pocket, he's completing passes over the middle. Those loose plays made a big, big difference in this game.

Speaker 4: Even on the fourth and goal, he made a play and Wandell Robinson. I know the safety came in and knocked the ball out, got a catch, but you expect an NFL receiver with two hands on the ball to secure that thing and talk it away and protect it and make sure you don't let that safety nine.

You got to catch that in the NFL, you got to secure that. But I think he brings an energy of life. You know, Charlie, Charlie White Senior was on my podcast earlier this week, and you know, his son was the is the oc at Old Miss And you know when we had him on the show, you know, like we were talking about this and he said, I guarantee you Jim Harbaugh is not happy with this quarterback change. They wanted to play the Giants with Russell Wilson and my brother in law, who's a big Chargers fan, he said the same thing. He's like, I'm really nervous now with Darden there because Wilson kind of is in one spot and Jackson dark gave the Giants' abilities to make those loose plays. And look at the Giants on third down, John, the Giants are awful this year on third down.

Speaker 1: Final one on Dart and Brian Dables asked about this. You have that final third and five, the Giants could have run the ball, forced the Chargers take their last time out. Instead, they decided to throw it, and Davill told us that at some point after the game, Jackson Dort had told him and THEO Johnson had talked about that specific play. So a team that had only had twelve games where they allowed less than twenty points, right in twelve of those games, right, you went in and you scored twenty one against him. They only gave up ninety five yards rushing a game. Yeah, so like you did it against a legit team, you know. And you could tell me that Alt went out and Beckton wasn't playing and all that others, but I'll tell you the league neighbors got hurt.

Obviously, it only resulted in three points, which is, you know, disappointing when you're on the two yard line or four yard line after Dex's interception, but the interception was also enormous.

Speaker 18: So first of all, he leaves his feet a lot, and some of it helps him because he'll jump through cuts and you know it's it's a lot of traffic in the middle of the field and he'll squeeze his way through land on his feet and then be able to leverage himself back down into a power position and get yards. So it's not always bad, but when you're in a one on one situation, you should never ever try to leave your feet, unless it's one of those hurtling over our guys that we see these wide receivers and running backs do. And the reason is because when you're on an angle like that, the minute you leave your feet, you've lost control and all it takes is a tiny swipe and you're on the ground. What he should have done is realize that this defender who's trailing him slightly is going to go low, so he himself should get really low. Let that defender hit his shoulder, like, lean into him instead of trying to run away from him. Lean back into him. Take the contact, which you're he's gonna run through. He runs through contact from two hundred and eighty pounds defensive line. He's so sure he's a low center gravity, but it doesn't even matter. He's gonna run through that contact. So initiate the contact yourself, stunt that that that tackle attempt, and then walk into the end zone. He'll look at it and he'll he'll say, jumping is what what cost him that touchdown?

Speaker 4: Right, because then and then he you know, and he also was trying to stiff farm there right at that point. But you're saying you're out of control. You know he's trailing, he's coming in. He ain't wrapping you, right. It was one of the things it took me a while to learn that.

Now they had the one big play, but other than that, there wasn't a lot of we are in control from the Chargers offense, and you give credit to the Giants defense. They forced the Chargers have to operate in five to eight yard yard frames and they were to control it. So Shane Bowen's taking a lot of flak this year for how I don't know, expose the defense has been at times, you gotta give him credit for the defense he designed against one of these one of the top offenses in the league this weekend. The Giants had a few mistackles, we know that, but for the most part they made the but they made more than they missed, and there were some that were one on one hits, flat out hits. For example, even Drew Phillips on Johnston on the last pass play, he nailed him right in his tracks.

You're just running to keep your offense balanced and then go and making the defense think about we might have to bring some extra pressure, which the Chargers did a lot of from the slot. They would bring uh you know, the corner or or the will linebacker off the slot just to stop the Giants run. And that was created because the Giants kept running the ball effectively.

That's why they've given up the least amount of points of the last year and a half in the NFL. I think it is eighteen or whatever whatever the number is the best red zone defense in the league. And it's because they been They don't break and then when they get down tight, they make plays. And so it was a challenge for the Giants the first you know, score the QB draw. If you're scouting the Giants, you're not You're not even practicing against that. And so it was a It was a weapon that Mike Kaffick was able to deploy because of who was under center. It was also from fifteen yards out right, exactly right, So it's not even the tight red zone it was. It was an out, way out red zone.

Speaker 18: Honestly, I think it's because quarterbacks these days aren't used to being under centers. They thought when they were backed up coming out, you know the sequence that we talked about where they you save the fumble, Andrew Thomas recovers the fumble and then they punted sixty seven yards and ultimately it led to an interception that didn't led to their final touchdown. Quarterbacks just aren't used to it. It never did it, adn't. He never did it at ole Miss and it's it's different. It seems simple.

Speaker 18: Like you cause you and your head, you can like remember yourself as a kid doing it, you know, with your friends, like a snap it to me. And but the mechanism is so hard for in the NFL because these centers get low because they're looking up, their butts are coming down trying to identify schemes. It forces the quarterback to sometimes go down low and then he's back up high. And so it's just easier to do it out of shotgun. But in certain situations it's you need the ball quickly to the back. Therefore you go under center shotgun, it just takes longer to get the ball to the running back.

Speaker 20: Taking the deep red zone has been a problem. They haven't been able to get that push in the running game to punch it in. How much do they miss not having a real full back.

Speaker 3: I don't know if it's the full back. I think some of it is scheme.

Speaker 18: The Giants have really for the last couple of years been heavily dependent on duo running. So what's duo running. Duo running is basically a power run without a puller. So you get two interior offensive linemen blocking the three technique, yet the other two on the other side blocking you know, the nose tackle, and you just want to get pushed. The easier way is to run inside zone. Inside zone is when the offensive line moves, you know, slants right or left, and you sometimes you bring a puller to kick out the backside. The challenge with inside zone, though, when you're in the tight red area is that defensive linemen are geared up to just create chaos and so you're gonna get leakage. It just gets really difficult. It's why, you know, you know, twenty years ago, when I was playing Brandon Jacobs and I we would do these tight red zone and short yarded situations out of bunches because it would force you to declare, you know, a coverage like you'd have to put someone over top of one of these wide receivers and then you'd run power right. So a bunch of left and you run a power to the right side with some motion. It's just harder to scheme all that stuff in today's NFL. I'm just glad Greg Cormela and Jim Finn are not listening to you right now. Well, I mean the position has gone away because the offense has become spread, right, it's useful in certain situations. You know, Scott Matt what's his name, Matt Matlock, Matt Locke for for the Chargers. He's a three hundred and three hundred pounds full back. He basically was a former D lineman, but they they bring him in for those situations. But trying to be their version of Patrick Carter. But he's a D lineman, you know what I mean, just kind of playing full back. All right, I want to squeeze in one more call before we go. Let's go to John and has the new jersey. John, what's going on.

Well, Dart is not gonna be in a position as he's moved forward to say I'm gonna throw it up in that area because I think that Neighbors can make a play. Because I don't know that there's another receiver on this team that you can do that with.
