ABOUT THIS EPISODE
Generations Talkin' My Sports | S4 E31 | "Does Money Actually Win? The Lakers Sale, MLB Salary Caps & Why Sports Ownership Has Changed Forever"
Premiering today
Just Jonathan and Steve this week — and one heavy topic that took over the entire episode: money. From the shocking sale of the Lakers less than a year after purchase to the looming threat of a 2027 MLB lockout, the guys dig into whether spending actually wins championships, why owners want a salary cap for players but not for themselves, and what it means when fans are quietly subsidizing billionaires without knowing it.
🏀 The Lakers Sold in 10 Months — For a $2 Billion Profit
Mark Walter buys the Lakers, flips them for a massive gain less than a year later, and Dodgers president Stan Kasten goes on record defending the move as pure business. Steve wonders if fans are reading too much into it. Jonathan lays out the uncomfortable truth: the public funds stadiums through insurance premiums and tax dollars, effectively owning a stake in these franchises without any of the rights, privileges, or profit when an owner flips the team for billions.
⚾ Does Money Actually Win in Baseball?
Steve makes the case that money doesn't guarantee anything — Tampa Bay and Milwaukee compete every year on a fraction of the payroll, while the Mets have one of the highest payrolls in baseball and can't buy their way into the playoffs. Jonathan pushes back hard: over the last 25 years, virtually every World Series winner has ranked in the top five in team salary. The Rays and Brewers are the exception that fans point to — not the rule.
💰 The Salary Cap Debate — Who's It Really Protecting?
Jonathan breaks down how local TV deals create the real disparity — the Yankees and Dodgers aren't just spending more, they're generating exponentially more revenue than mid-market teams like Milwaukee. A salary cap doesn't fix that gap; it just suppresses player wages while leaving big-market owners' margins untouched. The guys connect this directly to the Clippers-Kawhi Leonard allegations involving the Aspiration and Dxtron deals — owners wanting flexibility for themselves while restricting it for everyone else.
🏈 Leveraged Buyouts, Deferred Contracts & Private Equity in Sports
Jonathan explains how modern ownership increasingly mirrors a leveraged buyout — borrow most of the purchase price, suppress wages to improve cash flow, defer superstar contracts decades into the future, then sell before those bills come due. It's the same financial engineering playing out in corporate America, and it's reshaping how franchises get bought, run, and sold.
🎓 College Sports as the New Wild West
Steve raises the alarm on college athletics, where the transfer portal and NIL money have gutted the old recruiting model. Stanford's decades-long commitment to academic standards under Jim Harbaugh and beyond gets contrasted with programs that will take anyone who can play. Cal's brief 2007 national title window, crushed by a loss to Oregon the same night Ohio State fell, becomes a symbol of how fragile — and money-driven — that entire ecosystem has become.
🔑 The Real Question: What Do Fans Actually Get?
Jonathan closes with the core tension: fans subsidize stadiums, absorb rising ticket and parking prices, and are told it's for the good of the community — while owners quietly walk away with billions in profit and zero long-term accountability. The conversation ends on a rare somber note for the show, acknowledging that sometimes looking at sports honestly means looking past the box score.
