00:00:00.479 --> 00:00:00.880
All right.
00:00:01.040 --> 00:00:02.160
Well, hello there.
00:00:02.240 --> 00:00:07.280
And thank you for joining me today for our 15-minute franchisee interview.
00:00:07.440 --> 00:00:08.800
My name is Jenna.
00:00:08.880 --> 00:00:12.960
I am the director of franchise development here with Right at Home.
00:00:13.439 --> 00:00:15.759
So I'd love to get this started.
00:00:15.919 --> 00:00:17.839
Why don't you introduce yourself?
00:00:18.000 --> 00:00:24.879
Uh, tell us the number of territories you own, where you're located, and when you became a Right at Home owner.
00:00:25.280 --> 00:00:25.760
Sure.
00:00:26.000 --> 00:00:28.160
So uh my name is Mike Brown.
00:00:28.320 --> 00:00:31.760
I'm located in Columbia, South Carolina.
00:00:31.920 --> 00:00:34.399
Uh we've been in business for 20 years.
00:00:34.880 --> 00:00:43.679
Uh we uh have a primary territory, recently purchased a secondary territory, uh, which we're in the process of opening right now.
00:00:44.240 --> 00:00:47.759
Uh so I've been in the business for 13 years almost.
00:00:47.920 --> 00:00:48.320
Yeah.
00:00:49.039 --> 00:00:51.439
And uh we've had the business in place for 20 years.
00:00:51.520 --> 00:00:52.799
So that's exciting.
00:00:53.039 --> 00:00:53.840
That is exciting.
00:00:54.000 --> 00:00:57.200
So uh congratulations, first of all, 20-year anniversary.
00:00:57.280 --> 00:00:58.079
That's pretty awesome.
00:00:58.320 --> 00:00:58.560
Thank you.
00:00:58.960 --> 00:01:03.200
Uh sounds like you guys are expanding and getting ready to open that territory.
00:01:03.280 --> 00:01:04.799
So that's exciting as well.
00:01:05.040 --> 00:01:05.359
Yes.
00:01:05.519 --> 00:01:13.040
Um, so talk to me a little bit about your professional background and uh what you did before becoming an an owner with Right at Home.
00:01:13.359 --> 00:01:14.079
Yeah, sure.
00:01:14.319 --> 00:01:17.760
So uh after college, I went into sales.
00:01:17.920 --> 00:01:21.519
Uh I worked for a national beer and wine distributor.
00:01:21.599 --> 00:01:23.680
So I worked as a manager for them.
00:01:23.920 --> 00:01:27.040
Uh did that for quite a bit of time.
00:01:27.280 --> 00:01:32.079
And always in the peripheral was this idea of the right at home business.
00:01:32.239 --> 00:01:34.640
And I talked to my parents a little bit about it.
00:01:34.719 --> 00:01:37.519
So they they really uh they started from the ground up.
00:01:37.760 --> 00:01:56.879
And uh eventually the business got to a point where I was offered a position uh working in sales, and little by little that's evolved into purchasing ownership in it, and and now where we sit at, my parents are still involved in it, but I'm a majority owner at this point of the business.
00:01:57.040 --> 00:01:58.879
So that's exciting.
00:01:58.959 --> 00:02:03.280
And to be able to leave a legacy, um, it doesn't get any better than that.
00:02:03.439 --> 00:02:07.519
So how awesome that you got to join your parents and and have a successful business.
00:02:07.599 --> 00:02:08.879
I think that's wonderful.
00:02:09.120 --> 00:02:20.319
Um, so what when you think about joining right at home, what was it that caused you to partner with your parents uh in this journey of franchise ownership?
00:02:21.280 --> 00:02:23.280
So a couple of things come to mind.
00:02:23.439 --> 00:02:35.039
Um, you know, I think it's a it's uh it was such at that time, and this is so much has changed in in uh the 13 years that I've been involved, but uh, I thought it was such a great idea.
00:02:35.280 --> 00:02:45.680
And it was such a rewarding way to be able to own a business, make a living, but you're also providing such a wonderful service to people that are in need.
00:02:45.919 --> 00:02:53.280
So being able to find a business where you have that type of balance where the give and take is can be equal, it's hard to find.
00:02:53.439 --> 00:02:55.360
So that was very appealing to it.
00:02:55.439 --> 00:02:58.000
I love the idea of working for yourself.
00:02:58.240 --> 00:03:00.479
And that's you know, that's a double-edged sword sometimes.
00:03:00.639 --> 00:03:05.439
So there's a lot of longer hours involved with that, but but what you're building is yours.
00:03:05.919 --> 00:03:07.680
You get to do it under your terms.
00:03:07.840 --> 00:03:13.039
And if you decide to change things in your business, you're you're able to make that pivot immediately.
00:03:13.199 --> 00:03:24.879
So that that sense of ownership and and doing things on a daily basis and knowing that it directly impacts you and benefits you was really something that sounded appealing to me.
00:03:25.120 --> 00:03:31.599
Um, so you know, when when the opportunity came about, I was I was very much interested.
00:03:31.759 --> 00:03:34.000
So okay, thank you for sharing that.
00:03:34.159 --> 00:03:39.759
And, you know, when you think about the typical day-to-day, I'm sure it it changes on a regular basis.
00:03:39.919 --> 00:03:46.479
Um, but what does a typical day look like for you now compared to when you first started the organization?
00:03:47.599 --> 00:03:57.120
Well, you know, as an owner, and regardless of whether you're part of a big national franchise system or not, you're still a small business owner.
00:03:57.759 --> 00:04:04.319
So your day fluctuates from it it fluctuates from hour hour to hour sometimes.
00:04:04.560 --> 00:04:11.759
Some days my start my day starts off with coming in and and helping make sure that the office is ready for orientation.
00:04:11.919 --> 00:04:14.800
There's other days that it starts off with with meetings.
00:04:15.039 --> 00:04:16.560
So everything always changes.
00:04:16.639 --> 00:04:28.560
You know, really as an owner, um you you find a your pivot point is wherever it's needed, you know, and and you surround yourself with with good staff and you lead by example.
00:04:28.720 --> 00:04:32.639
So there's nothing in this office that I'm not willing to do if I'm asking you to do it.
00:04:32.800 --> 00:04:34.160
So I love that.
00:04:34.319 --> 00:04:34.560
Yeah.
00:04:34.639 --> 00:04:41.600
So you're wearing a lot of hats, but also seeing the benefits of those hats and really being able to support your team in in that area as well.
00:04:41.759 --> 00:04:42.399
I love that.
00:04:42.560 --> 00:04:48.879
And, you know, when you think of the support structure that Right at Home provides, what part do you find the most valuable?
00:04:49.120 --> 00:04:53.680
And I guess even now compared to what you found valuable 13 years ago.
00:04:54.000 --> 00:04:54.639
Yeah, sure.
00:04:54.879 --> 00:05:00.800
So, you know, obviously as you evolve as a franchisee, your needs change.
00:05:01.040 --> 00:05:07.279
So you're you're maybe not calling on on the corporate team for the same things you were 13, 20 years ago.
00:05:07.519 --> 00:05:12.399
But I think the the biggest benefit is the amount of resources that you have available to you.
00:05:12.560 --> 00:05:44.720
Um, I see a lot of uh people that are starting working as independents and the learning curve that they have to go through, and you know, that's that's their problem, but but you know, the the learning curve that they have to go through when I can just go on something like a hub or I can call my performance coach or I can call or I can reach out to another owner uh out of the 400 and change offices that are that are available, and they'll immediately tell me, hey, listen, you should try this or do this.
00:05:44.879 --> 00:05:49.120
That's something that you know that that's that's really what you buy into.
00:05:49.199 --> 00:05:52.720
And so I think that's been a huge benefit, even even today.
00:05:53.120 --> 00:06:02.319
You know, if I have a question, I can reach out to my coach or go on a resource hub or or reach out to one of the many owners that that I have a good relationship with.
00:06:02.560 --> 00:06:03.360
Yeah, yeah.
00:06:03.519 --> 00:06:04.720
And what a great point.
00:06:04.800 --> 00:06:08.879
I couldn't imagine uh doing this type of business on your own.
00:06:09.040 --> 00:06:11.360
Um, it's just that support is so valuable.
00:06:11.519 --> 00:06:13.439
So I do appreciate you sharing that.
00:06:13.600 --> 00:06:21.439
And, you know, when you think about this business as a whole, it really is about building relationships, not only with your staff, but in your community.
00:06:21.600 --> 00:06:31.199
And um, I'd love for you if you can think top of mind of a story or just a feel-good moment uh recently where you felt you really made an impact.
00:06:32.399 --> 00:06:40.959
Yeah, so uh this area of the country, it's very veteran-friendly, very we're a very military-friendly state.
00:06:41.040 --> 00:06:46.240
Uh, so we've had a lot of connections that we made uh through veteran organizations.
00:06:46.560 --> 00:06:54.639
Uh, we volunteer with a group called Wreaths Across America, and we were uh coordinating their wreath laying ceremony.
00:06:54.879 --> 00:07:02.959
So being able to meet all these veterans and all these people, and and part of what we do is we put wreaths out each year at the National Cemetery.
00:07:03.120 --> 00:07:05.439
And so we have 15,000 wreaths to put out.
00:07:05.600 --> 00:07:20.000
So the amount of connections, the amount of thank yous, the amount of people you get to touch and impact doing this, that always you know, it's it's a huge monumental task, and it takes up a lot of time, but it's very rewarding when it's all said and done.
00:07:20.319 --> 00:07:21.839
Wow, that's that's beautiful.
00:07:21.920 --> 00:07:22.160
Thank you.
00:07:22.319 --> 00:07:23.920
It gave me goosebumps, actually.
00:07:24.079 --> 00:07:30.079
I mean, it's just amazing the things that you do on a daily basis and realize the impact you're making on so many people.
00:07:30.240 --> 00:07:31.360
Um, that's awesome.
00:07:31.519 --> 00:07:32.560
Thank you for sharing that.
00:07:32.879 --> 00:07:43.040
And then, you know, as I take candidates through the education process to, you know, one day become a right at home owner, um, you know, they they like to hear from owners.
00:07:43.120 --> 00:07:45.519
They like to hear about what that day-to-day looks like.
00:07:45.680 --> 00:07:57.600
And, you know, I think for me, I'd like to ask you what would be a piece of advice that you would like to give to a prospect who's currently looking at right at home for ownership?
00:07:58.800 --> 00:08:08.879
So I I think because you see a lot of people coming into this industry, and I think the one piece of advice that I can give is you have to be patient.
00:08:09.439 --> 00:08:14.800
You have to uh, you know, not to sound too much like Nick Saban, but you have to trust the process.
00:08:14.959 --> 00:08:17.120
This isn't something that happens overnight.
00:08:17.360 --> 00:08:20.480
These are relationships are built over years.
00:08:21.439 --> 00:08:24.240
And going into it, be humble.
00:08:24.560 --> 00:08:30.560
Yeah, if you think you're gonna be at 2,000 hours overnight, you're gonna be uh sorely mistaken.
00:08:30.639 --> 00:08:34.559
And and it's it can be a lot of work at times, but it's very rewarding.
00:08:34.799 --> 00:08:41.440
And you know, you're helping people around the clock, you're helping, you're taking care of people's families, their loved ones.
00:08:41.759 --> 00:08:43.600
This isn't the landscaping company.
00:08:43.679 --> 00:08:45.200
If you don't show up, it's okay.
00:08:45.360 --> 00:08:53.840
You know, people, the expectations and what you're selling and what you're putting out there to the public, people are gonna hold you to it.
00:08:54.480 --> 00:09:04.320
So that that's I mean, it's a good business to be in, but I think you have to go in very level-headed, very humble, and willing to put in the hours initially.
00:09:04.399 --> 00:09:06.480
So yeah, great advice, Mike.
00:09:06.559 --> 00:09:07.519
Thank you for that.
00:09:07.759 --> 00:09:11.200
And um, it's been such a pleasure getting to talk to you today.
00:09:12.000 --> 00:09:15.039
Um, and I so appreciate you taking the time to meet with me.
00:09:15.200 --> 00:09:18.320
And sure, uh thank you so much for making a difference.
00:09:18.399 --> 00:09:21.120
Uh, I can tell that you're engaged with your team.
00:09:21.279 --> 00:09:21.919
I love that.
00:09:22.000 --> 00:09:26.960
I love that um you're making a difference through the service of your clients in the VA community.
00:09:27.200 --> 00:09:30.399
So thank you for that as well and your leadership in the community.
00:09:30.720 --> 00:09:31.600
We're grateful for you.
00:09:31.919 --> 00:09:32.399
My pleasure.
00:09:32.559 --> 00:09:34.399
So thanks for having me.
