ABOUT THIS EPISODE
You don't need to negotiate your rates to earn the gig. You need to negotiate the game.
In this episode, I make the case that discounting your work doesn't just hurt you, it gives your prospect extra leverage and quietly drags the whole creative industry closer to the "race-to-the-bottom" cliff. The fix is not a better rebuttal. It's a better story.
Because nobody's excited to "buy web design." They're excited to buy a sales page that earns trust. Nobody cares about "brand guidelines." They care about a consistent feel that makes a business look like it actually has its life together. And "video marketing" is cool… but short motion pictures that capture a brand's soul? Now people lean in.
I break down 3 (plus a bonus) ways to protect your value without folding on price:
- Offer a few clear package options, so people can choose based on fit instead of forcing you into a discount.
- Put a clock on your proposal, so it doesn't die in "I'll get back to you" purgatory.
- Start pitching your work as an investment with ROI, not a "nice-to-have" expense.
- Bonus: sell what actually differentiates you, like responsiveness, proactivity, and the hard-earned expertise people always forget to factor in.
If you've ever felt that yucky wobble when money comes up, this one is your reset. You're not here to beg for a "yes". You're here to set terms, protect your peace, and get paid like the asset you are.
