00:00:06.719 --> 00:00:22.000
Welcome to this week's episode of Fields Notes, where we take a deeper dive into sermon text, discuss matters of life and faith, and enjoy conversations around the table with fellow friends from the Fields.
00:00:25.679 --> 00:00:27.760
All right, well, hey Fields Notes listeners.
00:00:27.920 --> 00:00:33.039
Welcome to a Fields Notes podcast episode that we are very excited about.
00:00:33.200 --> 00:00:36.240
This is not this is not your normal Fields Notes podcast.
00:00:36.320 --> 00:00:44.799
We actually are probably breaking some podcast rules today that sitting around me at our big table is not one or two or three people.
00:00:45.039 --> 00:00:56.000
We actually have 10 people sitting around this table because we are doing a Fields Notes podcast, in one sense, recapping the four years we've had as a Fields Church.
00:00:56.079 --> 00:01:06.000
And to do so, we actually are having our original core team, the original 10 people who kind of committed from the start to join the Fields Church with us today.
00:01:06.159 --> 00:01:11.599
So uh uh at the time of this recording, this coming Sunday is our four-year anniversary.
00:01:11.920 --> 00:01:18.959
And so we're very excited about that, and we just want to reflect on, in some sense, what it's been like since the very start.
00:01:19.120 --> 00:01:22.480
So you might know the people who are around this table, but I'm Joe House.
00:01:22.560 --> 00:01:23.599
I'm here with my wife Callie.
00:01:23.760 --> 00:01:24.719
The Stricklands are here.
00:01:24.799 --> 00:01:26.159
Yeah, we are you probably knew.
00:01:26.560 --> 00:01:31.200
The Mangleds are here, the Kings are here, and the Lions are here.
00:01:31.280 --> 00:01:45.840
And we are really excited to talk about uh our experience in a way, um, throughout our time as the Fields Church, all of the uh, in a sense, the blood and sweat and tears that have been put in that has been a joy and has been growing for us.
00:01:45.920 --> 00:01:51.280
Um and really for me, it's fun to just be around friends and family here uh in this time.
00:01:51.359 --> 00:01:52.319
So we're really excited for it.
00:01:52.400 --> 00:01:56.079
We hope it's a help to you listening of being like, man, what has the Fields Church been like for the whole time?
00:01:56.239 --> 00:02:01.760
So, what we're gonna do in one sense is kind of ask us how how do we become part of the Fields Church?
00:02:01.840 --> 00:02:03.680
And so we're actually gonna start with the Stricklands.
00:02:03.840 --> 00:02:08.800
Jeff and Steph, tell us a little bit from the very, very, very, very start.
00:02:09.840 --> 00:02:12.159
How did the Fields Church come to be?
00:02:12.479 --> 00:02:13.759
Yeah, it's a great question.
00:02:13.840 --> 00:02:16.719
I feel like probably more simpler than you would think.
00:02:16.879 --> 00:02:21.280
Um, I was obviously on staff as a pastor at Rock Point Church.
00:02:21.360 --> 00:02:26.719
Uh, we were in the summer of 2020, so that is pretty much right in the middle of COVID.
00:02:26.879 --> 00:02:37.120
Uh, really had just started gathering back on Sundays, and um, we kind of knew uh for some things our lead pastor was transitioning out of uh Rock Point.
00:02:37.199 --> 00:02:42.800
Uh probably I wasn't gonna trans uh kind of move into that lead pastor position.
00:02:42.960 --> 00:02:46.400
And so we were thinking, man, what might the Lord have next for us?
00:02:46.560 --> 00:02:49.360
Sort of open-handed, talking about some different things.
00:02:49.439 --> 00:03:08.800
I was even telling, you know, you guys a little bit beforehand, I like I was putting out a couple resumes and some applications and some things like that, and then had a really good friend uh at a church in Brownsburg that had said met with him for lunch, and he was like, Hey, we want to plant a church in Speedway, and we think you should be the guy.
00:03:08.960 --> 00:03:10.560
And uh this is not Speedway.
00:03:10.719 --> 00:03:12.159
This is not Speedway.
00:03:12.479 --> 00:03:13.680
Amen, right, Steph?
00:03:13.840 --> 00:03:14.159
Amen.
00:03:14.319 --> 00:03:14.719
Yeah.
00:03:14.960 --> 00:03:18.800
We're so thankful for Harrison Beckman and Providence Church uh that is there.
00:03:18.960 --> 00:03:20.560
Uh the Lord's doing a great thing.
00:03:20.639 --> 00:03:28.000
Uh we did not feel like Speedway is probably the best uh fit for us in that season um of ministry and life.
00:03:28.159 --> 00:03:33.520
And so I went, I asked Steph what she thought about it, and she agreed that that probably wasn't the best fit.
00:03:33.599 --> 00:03:38.080
So I had actually gone back to those guys and be was like, I just I don't think this is gonna work.
00:03:38.240 --> 00:03:41.919
And so they said, actually, we don't care where in Indianapolis.
00:03:42.080 --> 00:03:44.879
Uh we would love to back you, support you.
00:03:45.039 --> 00:03:47.599
We need more churches in the Indianapolis area.
00:03:47.759 --> 00:03:52.719
So that was essentially, I went back to Steph, and Steph and I started talking and praying and thinking.
00:03:52.879 --> 00:03:56.719
I started having a lot of conversations with pastors in the Indianapolis area.
00:03:56.960 --> 00:04:03.360
A very early form of plant indie uh kind of was beginning to come apart or come about.
00:04:03.439 --> 00:04:12.240
And so they had actually kind of strategically looked at Westfield and Bargersville, and uh we started doing some date nights to Westfield.
00:04:12.400 --> 00:04:15.840
I think immediately we're like, yeah, Westfield is the place.
00:04:15.919 --> 00:04:17.199
It's growing like crazy.
00:04:17.279 --> 00:04:19.600
There weren't that many gospel preaching churches.
00:04:19.680 --> 00:04:22.879
Uh we just loved Westfield, the community, the people.
00:04:23.040 --> 00:04:24.879
We already had some connections here.
00:04:25.040 --> 00:04:27.920
Um, so that really was kind of how things began.
00:04:28.240 --> 00:04:29.759
Steph, I don't I don't know what it was.
00:04:30.079 --> 00:04:32.720
Yeah, what's it like from Steph's perspective of this?
00:04:33.040 --> 00:04:34.720
My husband's gone crazy, isn't it?
00:04:34.959 --> 00:04:35.920
Perhaps.
00:04:36.160 --> 00:04:39.439
Uh well, Jeff has always been a big picture, big dreamer.
00:04:39.600 --> 00:04:43.920
Um, so wasn't surprised when this sort of fell into our lap.
00:04:44.240 --> 00:04:54.959
And um, as we were talking and praying about it, um, there was just a big sense of peace knowing that um Rock Point was not gonna be our forever home and that God's had something else in store for us.
00:04:55.279 --> 00:04:58.160
Um, and I never felt anxious or nervous.
00:04:58.399 --> 00:05:01.120
It was just a big sense of overwhelming peace from the Lord.
00:05:01.519 --> 00:05:12.240
And just one of the verses that kind of always stuck with me through that time of like praying and meeting people and driving through Westfield was just the word abide um from John 15.
00:05:12.319 --> 00:05:17.040
And so just really trusting in him through it all, because there was a lot of unknowns.
00:05:17.279 --> 00:05:20.240
We were leaving family, we were leaving two good jobs.
00:05:20.399 --> 00:05:22.399
I was working um as a nurse practitioner.
00:05:22.480 --> 00:05:24.399
He obviously had his job at Rock Point.
00:05:24.720 --> 00:05:28.240
Um, and so just leaving sort of the community that we had always known.
00:05:28.399 --> 00:05:37.360
Um, and so just really trusting the Lord in that and just had an overwhelming sense of peace, knowing that this is what the Lord had called us to and that he would provide.
00:05:37.439 --> 00:05:39.439
Um, and he's done that every step of the way.
00:05:39.600 --> 00:05:40.480
So it's been good.
00:05:40.800 --> 00:05:42.079
I have a follow-up question.
00:05:42.240 --> 00:05:52.079
Uh I so you guys don't know this, but I had called her before we got married uh when I was in seminary and told her we're gonna plant a church in New York, uh, NYC.
00:05:52.240 --> 00:05:55.199
And she started looking up jobs and apartments and things like that.
00:05:55.279 --> 00:05:57.839
And then like two weeks later, I called her and was like, no, we're not.
00:05:58.000 --> 00:06:00.000
Um, I don't think I'm the right guy to go there.
00:06:00.240 --> 00:06:09.839
Probably a year or two after that, or maybe longer, we uh me and another buddy, good friends uh of ours from college, uh, we were like, we're gonna plant in Ireland.
00:06:10.000 --> 00:06:15.120
Um, and so then Steph got really excited about the possibility of Ireland, came down.
00:06:15.279 --> 00:06:17.680
That was like maybe a couple months that we talked about that.
00:06:17.839 --> 00:06:18.560
That didn't happen.
00:06:18.800 --> 00:06:21.759
When did you actually believe that we were gonna plant in Westfield?
00:06:21.839 --> 00:06:26.160
Like we were gonna actually do this thing, and it wasn't just a crazy idea that I had.
00:06:27.439 --> 00:06:35.120
I think once we had driven here a couple of times for date nights, and I honestly think it was once you had figured out the roundabouts and you felt comfortable driving.
00:06:35.680 --> 00:06:37.519
Hamilton County roundabouts, they'll get you there.
00:06:37.759 --> 00:06:41.920
I was gonna say, once he felt confident with that, it was like, okay, we can do this, we can live here.
00:06:42.240 --> 00:06:46.240
Guys, I have been converted to the the wonders of the roundabout.
00:06:46.319 --> 00:06:52.720
Now, when I go to the south side of Indy and they have these four-way stops or those lights, I'm like, what are we doing?
00:06:52.879 --> 00:06:54.079
Have you heard of the roundabout?
00:06:54.800 --> 00:06:55.680
It's wonderful, it's wonderful.
00:06:55.839 --> 00:06:56.879
Well, thanks, Stricklands.
00:06:56.959 --> 00:06:59.439
Let's hear from the as the people come on the board.
00:06:59.519 --> 00:07:03.360
So, as my I have my little notes page of who the order that people have come on.
00:07:03.439 --> 00:07:06.959
Jeff, you can tell a little bit about who's first to kind of commit.
00:07:07.040 --> 00:07:08.639
Well you're like, hey, my name's Jeff.
00:07:08.720 --> 00:07:09.839
I guess I'm planning a church.
00:07:10.000 --> 00:07:11.839
Who's gonna come come with me here?
00:07:12.000 --> 00:07:14.160
Who is the first to come with?
00:07:14.240 --> 00:07:15.439
Yeah, I guess I know the answer to the first one.
00:07:15.600 --> 00:07:16.240
First to commit.
00:07:16.399 --> 00:07:16.560
Yeah.
00:07:16.720 --> 00:07:18.160
First, who is like, I'm in.
00:07:18.319 --> 00:07:21.759
I do think you should just pause the podcast for a second and guess.
00:07:22.000 --> 00:07:22.800
No, not really.
00:07:22.879 --> 00:07:23.759
Not you, Joe.
00:07:23.920 --> 00:07:26.079
If you're listening, you should pause the podcast.
00:07:26.720 --> 00:07:27.040
I had to buy.
00:07:27.199 --> 00:07:29.120
I was like, I was like, whatever you need to do, but I'll do it.
00:07:29.279 --> 00:07:29.600
I'm in.
00:07:29.680 --> 00:07:30.720
I'm in, I got it.
00:07:30.959 --> 00:07:31.600
No, no, no.
00:07:31.680 --> 00:07:39.120
If you're listening, you should pause for a second and go, who I'm just gonna talk, and then you'll have plenty of time to guess who the first, second, third, fourth, fifth, and down the road.
00:07:39.279 --> 00:07:49.279
Uh, I told our staff at Rock Point in probably late October and uh end of the day, last part of the staff I talked to, because they were doing work, which was great.
00:07:49.360 --> 00:07:53.199
Not that the other staff wasn't doing work, but they were like in rehearsals.
00:07:53.279 --> 00:07:54.480
So now you have an idea.
00:07:54.720 --> 00:08:02.560
Um I I told our staff, uh, our worship team that we were gonna be moving to plant a church in Westfield, Indiana.
00:08:02.639 --> 00:08:04.399
And then I'll let Grace take it from there.
00:08:05.360 --> 00:08:05.680
Yeah.
00:08:05.839 --> 00:08:10.319
So Jeff, yeah, shared the vision of what he and Steph were doing and where they were gonna be.
00:08:10.480 --> 00:08:18.480
And I literally followed up after Jeff told me and was like, hey, if you uh need a worship leader, I would love for you to consider me.
00:08:19.040 --> 00:08:23.360
And I think it was locked in a few, like I don't know when, after.
00:08:23.759 --> 00:08:27.040
Then, okay, then I said yes.
00:08:27.839 --> 00:08:29.920
Steph and I actually had a conversation the night before.
00:08:30.000 --> 00:08:44.879
I don't know if we told you this, but the night before we were just trying to think about people that might come with us, and or maybe a couple days before, and we were like, I mean, if Grace could come, if she she would be the perfect person to like lead music and worship at the fields.
00:08:45.039 --> 00:08:51.840
Uh so when you said that, that was the Lord just uh answering another prayer of ours, uh affirming that.
00:08:51.919 --> 00:08:58.480
So I Grace, you and Stephanie know each other from a little while back, even more so.
00:08:58.639 --> 00:09:00.320
So there's a lot of stories there.
00:09:01.279 --> 00:09:01.919
Yes.
00:09:02.799 --> 00:09:03.519
Yes, we do.
00:09:04.960 --> 00:09:07.519
Many stories of the fact Steph used to babysit.
00:09:08.000 --> 00:09:10.960
Yes, she often said that she changed my diapers.
00:09:11.200 --> 00:09:13.440
So we go way back.
00:09:14.080 --> 00:09:18.799
What's fun is on my little my little cheat sheet here of of names, Grace is the first on the on this name.
00:09:19.039 --> 00:09:21.519
Dylan is not though the second though with Grace.
00:09:21.759 --> 00:09:22.960
You guys were not married at the time.
00:09:23.039 --> 00:09:26.000
Maybe had just started dating, not dating.
00:09:26.399 --> 00:09:31.759
So when I when we was locked in that I was coming, a few months later, that's when Dylan and I started dating.
00:09:32.080 --> 00:09:35.120
Ah Dylan's like, oh, this church plant, maybe I can go there.
00:09:35.840 --> 00:09:41.919
And so on our first date, like I it wasn't shared that we that I was coming to be a part of this plant.
00:09:42.159 --> 00:09:50.399
And so we were sitting there on our way home from a restaurant in the car, and he was like, Man, I love what Jeff and Steph are doing.
00:09:50.480 --> 00:09:52.559
I've always wanted to be a part of a church plant.
00:09:52.879 --> 00:10:03.120
And in my head, I'm like, oh my goodness, if this whole dating thing works out, if this whole dating thing works out and we get married, like this is so gonna be the Lord.
00:10:03.279 --> 00:10:03.360
Wow.
00:10:03.759 --> 00:10:04.639
And here we are.
00:10:04.960 --> 00:10:05.440
Here we are.
00:10:06.240 --> 00:10:06.720
Praise the Lord.
00:10:06.799 --> 00:10:08.159
We'll hear more from Dylan later.
00:10:08.240 --> 00:10:13.919
But next on my list of people to join the Fields Church from the start, I have Ian and Holly line.
00:10:14.159 --> 00:10:15.919
So maybe I we could talk about how Jeff has been.
00:10:16.080 --> 00:10:26.639
Yeah, so early that same day when I was telling the staff I had uh I obviously Holly, that was uh our kids team was under my area of ministry at uh the fields.
00:10:26.720 --> 00:10:28.639
And so Holly and I worked together for a long time.
00:10:28.720 --> 00:10:31.519
The lines, were you always in our small group?
00:10:31.759 --> 00:10:33.759
At least from when we were at the church.
00:10:33.919 --> 00:10:37.519
I feel like you were with us from the beginning of us starting a group almost.
00:10:37.759 --> 00:10:42.320
Yeah, I mean, I think we I think we moved in slightly after you started because we were part of a different group.
00:10:42.480 --> 00:10:42.639
Right.
00:10:42.799 --> 00:10:45.919
But it was pretty, I'm pretty sure it was still when your guys' group was still pretty young.
00:10:46.240 --> 00:10:53.039
So it had to have been, and we started the group from like before like day one almost of us being so probably four or five years we had been in group together.
00:10:53.120 --> 00:11:02.480
So I had told Holly, and then I think I I told the whole kids team, but then I think I brought Holly aside and said, Hey, we'd love for you to come with us.
00:11:02.639 --> 00:11:04.320
And then I'll let you take it away.
00:11:04.639 --> 00:11:05.039
Yeah.
00:11:05.200 --> 00:11:13.279
Um and I went home that evening and I told Ian, I was like, Hey, Jeff and Steph were thinking about planting a church, maybe over in Westfield.
00:11:13.360 --> 00:11:16.480
And I think Ian's exact words were yes, let's do it.
00:11:17.039 --> 00:11:21.120
And so then we had a small group, I think, either like that night or the next day.
00:11:21.279 --> 00:11:25.519
Um, and we like told you guys when we were leaving, and yeah.
00:11:26.159 --> 00:11:34.720
I'm pretty sure I was like, if you guys need a week or so, or so you know, something like when they it was like the next we're I was like, amazing, this is incredible.
00:11:34.960 --> 00:11:42.960
Yeah, so like uh it for a couple years, like I I used to be a teacher on and off struggling with being a teacher, it's really great.
00:11:43.039 --> 00:11:48.559
And then I look for 30 jobs and I didn't get a job, and then next year is really great, and then it wasn't great, and then it's great.
00:11:48.799 --> 00:11:54.000
And uh and coming into COVID, I actually had a pretty decent year, even considering COVID.
00:11:54.159 --> 00:11:59.840
And then so I was like, okay, we're setting our roots down, we're getting a house, we're this is where we're at.
00:12:00.000 --> 00:12:02.320
We're gonna be in Crawfordsville, this is what we're doing.
00:12:02.639 --> 00:12:07.519
And then so we started looking for houses over the summer, and then that next year I thought was gonna be great.
00:12:07.679 --> 00:12:08.639
It was it was tough.
00:12:08.879 --> 00:12:11.039
The year after COVID was tough teaching.
00:12:11.200 --> 00:12:17.519
We put in an offer on a house, went through the inspection, failed at inspection, counter-offered, gave us a bed.
00:12:17.919 --> 00:12:20.159
It just everything was just falling through.
00:12:20.399 --> 00:12:25.840
And uh then Holly, you know, approached uh, you know, talk we talked about it that night, and and that's why I was so quick.
00:12:25.919 --> 00:12:32.320
It was like something couldn't be clearer than all these other doors closing and this one opening.
00:12:32.559 --> 00:12:38.480
So and I'm pretty sure we're just like, yeah, I mean, uh yeah, we'll we'll we'll pray about it, but yeah.
00:12:39.600 --> 00:12:39.840
We're good.
00:12:40.000 --> 00:12:40.879
So we'll pray too.
00:12:40.960 --> 00:12:46.000
You know, I so what's so funny is because you guys were in group, we obviously knew we were planting a little ahead of time.
00:12:46.080 --> 00:13:00.960
It I remember when you guys were like walking through that house, and I mean Steph and I are not praying you out of that house, but like we're we were certainly like when that did when that fell through, we were like, oh man, they they might come with us now, you know, like before that.
00:13:01.039 --> 00:13:04.240
So yeah, just really cool to think about different ways that the Lord worked.
00:13:04.559 --> 00:13:05.200
So cool.
00:13:05.360 --> 00:13:08.639
Next we have Doug and Kathy King.
00:13:08.720 --> 00:13:13.519
So Doug and Kathy, we're gonna be Jeff, tell us a little bit of how did the Kings come?
00:13:13.840 --> 00:13:25.200
So the Kings, so I was over discipleship at Rock Point, and uh both Doug and Kathy were heavily involved in men's and women's ministry there, leading Bible studies, doing groups, teaching classes.
00:13:25.759 --> 00:13:29.440
Maybe not the classes part yet, because we were trying to start to bring those classes in.
00:13:29.519 --> 00:13:36.639
So I feel like from day one, like they they were two of the first people I met at Rock Point, um, certainly heavily involved in the ministry there.
00:13:36.720 --> 00:13:47.679
So we just got to be really good friends, um, talked a ton, shared vision and theology and reading books and digging into all of these things.
00:13:47.759 --> 00:13:59.279
Um, and I knew when we were gonna plant, I was like, man, we need people um who are mature and solid and can disciple people and have experiences old.
00:13:59.360 --> 00:13:59.600
I'm sorry.
00:14:00.720 --> 00:14:05.279
Also, it wouldn't hurt if they weren't 25 years old.
00:14:05.600 --> 00:14:06.480
Let's be clear.
00:14:06.799 --> 00:14:11.120
Yeah, that's not that's maturity in every facet um is helpful.
00:14:11.279 --> 00:14:16.960
And so I yeah, I think it probably was uh I don't know, maybe a month or so after I talked to the staff.
00:14:17.200 --> 00:14:19.039
So it's probably November, I would guess.
00:14:19.120 --> 00:14:26.159
Uh Doug and I had a meeting that we were just supposed to have in normal sort of ministry meetings, kind of following through some things that he was doing.
00:14:26.240 --> 00:14:29.039
And at the end, I was like, hey, here's what we're gonna do.
00:14:29.200 --> 00:14:32.720
Um, and I would love for you and Kathy to consider coming.
00:14:32.799 --> 00:14:35.360
Um, and so I'll let you take it from there.
00:14:35.840 --> 00:14:41.600
Well, actually, it was December, I think it was more early December of 2020.
00:14:41.840 --> 00:14:48.240
Um, I was just coming out of Rock Point at about eight o'clock in the morning, and Jeff is not an early riser, but he was there.
00:14:48.399 --> 00:14:50.080
And he said, You've probably been there for hours.
00:14:50.559 --> 00:14:51.519
I had been there at 8 a.m.
00:14:51.840 --> 00:14:52.799
since 2 a.m.
00:14:53.440 --> 00:14:55.519
And Jeff said, See, I was there at 8 a.m.
00:14:55.679 --> 00:14:56.000
Let's go.
00:14:56.399 --> 00:14:58.320
Jeff said, I would like, I said, I need to talk to you.
00:14:58.399 --> 00:14:59.840
And I thought, what have I done now?
00:14:59.919 --> 00:15:01.039
I'm in big trouble.
00:15:01.279 --> 00:15:04.960
Uh, and he said that Steph and I have been called to plan a church.
00:15:05.039 --> 00:15:06.080
Would you and Kathy?
00:15:06.159 --> 00:15:09.919
And I remember the the exact words, would you and Kathy be the first to come?
00:15:10.399 --> 00:15:15.200
I said, and I said, Well, Jeff, I love you, but I'm not gonna come because because you called me.
00:15:15.360 --> 00:15:20.320
We have to be sure that this is both an internal and external calling from the Lord.
00:15:20.399 --> 00:15:28.080
Yeah, and so I said, We need to we need to pray on this and seek scripture for wisdom and discernment before we can commit to that.
00:15:28.320 --> 00:15:32.720
And I remember telling you, I said, Well, I'm gonna come, but I'm not selling my lake house.
00:15:32.960 --> 00:15:38.080
Yeah, well, that's our next little part of the story, and then you guys can maybe tell us fill in some gaps here.
00:15:38.159 --> 00:15:43.679
Yeah, so you guys, I I think in that meeting you were like, Well, I need to talk to Kathy about it, that sort of thing.
00:15:43.840 --> 00:15:45.200
Let's maybe get dinner together.
00:15:45.360 --> 00:15:48.320
You guys come out to the house and we'll talk through it in a little while.
00:15:48.559 --> 00:15:53.600
And so we did, we put that on the schedule, and we were coming out, and Steph's like, Do you think they're gonna come with us?
00:15:53.759 --> 00:15:55.759
And I was like, I don't know.
00:15:55.919 --> 00:16:00.639
I mean, I I I don't think so, but they're being gracious, they're being kind.
00:16:00.720 --> 00:16:01.919
Um, and so we went out there.
00:16:02.080 --> 00:16:03.519
We had not been to your neighborhood before.
00:16:03.600 --> 00:16:05.840
Well, we had been there, but we'd never seen your house, hadn't been in.
00:16:05.919 --> 00:16:07.039
Steph had not been there.
00:16:07.200 --> 00:16:13.279
Um, and so we pull in, we pull into the uh driveway, and Steph looks at me and is like, they're not gonna come.
00:16:13.440 --> 00:16:25.279
Um and then I walked into the house, and I mean, it was a beautiful house, especially, I mean, just everything that I love about houses, it was a lot of books, beautiful fireplace, high ceilings.
00:16:25.360 --> 00:16:26.000
It was incredible.
00:16:26.080 --> 00:16:27.840
And I looked at Steph and I was like, Yeah, you're right.
00:16:28.000 --> 00:16:29.360
There's no way they're coming.
00:16:29.600 --> 00:16:31.519
Um, and then I've told this story before.
00:16:31.600 --> 00:16:38.399
The entire night, you guys were just asking us questions that seemed like you had already decided that you were coming.
00:16:38.559 --> 00:16:41.360
And so finally, like, we're getting ready to have dessert.
00:16:41.440 --> 00:16:45.360
And I I told the folks earlier, like, this incredible orange pie.
00:16:45.519 --> 00:16:46.240
Tangerine pie.
00:16:46.399 --> 00:16:47.120
Tangerine pie.
00:16:47.200 --> 00:16:48.080
Yes, so good.
00:16:48.240 --> 00:16:51.600
And I was so not thinking it was gonna be good.
00:16:51.759 --> 00:16:55.120
And it was because it just sounded weird, and it was so good.
00:16:55.279 --> 00:17:00.080
Um, and I Steph leaned up and she was just like, Are they coming with us?
00:17:00.240 --> 00:17:01.919
And I was like, I don't know.
00:17:02.080 --> 00:17:03.200
It kind of seems like that.
00:17:03.279 --> 00:17:07.599
And so I think I just asked, Hey, are you guys like, are you guys coming with us?
00:17:07.759 --> 00:17:13.839
And you guys, uh, as you always are, big smiles, very uh warm.
00:17:14.160 --> 00:17:17.440
We're like, yes, uh, and and really encouraged and that sort of thing.
00:17:17.519 --> 00:17:26.319
I don't know what happened, maybe especially for you, Kathy, between me talking to Doug and then that meal, uh, what was going on in your own mind and heart?
00:17:26.640 --> 00:17:37.279
Well, we had come out of COVID, we're coming out of COVID, and all during that time, I just knew that um the trust in God, just trusting and lean into him.
00:17:38.000 --> 00:17:46.799
And so when Doug came in and said that Jeff had talked with him, they were gonna plant a church in Westfield, we were asked to join.
00:17:46.960 --> 00:17:48.000
What do you think?
00:17:48.559 --> 00:17:52.640
And I'm thinking, well, maybe this is something God wants us to do.
00:17:53.119 --> 00:18:00.400
But I have to admit that as Jeff mentioned earlier, I knew about some things that were going on at the church.
00:18:00.559 --> 00:18:04.720
Our head pastor was getting ready to move along, retire.
00:18:04.960 --> 00:18:14.799
Things were moving, and now Jeff is leaving, and I was like, Well, I really had to pray over it, and I really felt like this is the right thing for us.
00:18:14.880 --> 00:18:16.799
And so, yes, I said, yes, let's do this.
00:18:16.960 --> 00:18:28.240
Well, it was around holiday time, so we had to wait a little bit before get through the holidays before Jeff and Steph came for dinner, and so it was just really exciting when they came and we got to hear their vision.
00:18:28.559 --> 00:18:30.799
There's a bit there's a backstory, a couple of backstories.
00:18:30.880 --> 00:18:51.119
Number one is that when Jeff came to Rock Point, we immediately fell in love with his peach with his preaching, with his ability to academically incentivize us and encourage us to dig deeper in scripture, um, with rock with the whole rock you curriculum that you established, encouraging us to go to seminary, all of those things.
00:18:51.359 --> 00:18:54.000
Um we were ready to follow you no matter what.
00:18:54.640 --> 00:18:57.279
Uh so that was one of the backstories.
00:18:57.440 --> 00:19:08.640
The other part of this is that um we Kathy and I, from the moment that you told uh told us about, ask us about this, we began to search scripture uh and pray about this opportunity.
00:19:08.960 --> 00:19:18.400
And the one the sentinel scripture that came to heart for me was John 13, as Jesus was washing the disciples' feet.
00:19:18.559 --> 00:19:24.160
Uh, the 14th verse of that chapter, he said, Now I'm giving you the towel of grace.
00:19:24.319 --> 00:19:25.839
Now do it to somebody else.
00:19:26.319 --> 00:19:29.599
The word go kept reverberating in my soul.
00:19:29.680 --> 00:19:40.079
Yeah, and so we talked about being water walkers, getting out of the boat of comfort and be like Peter and walking on the water and trusting that God had a path for us.
00:19:40.160 --> 00:19:41.839
Yeah, that was the convincer.
00:19:42.000 --> 00:19:43.440
Yeah, so that's awesome.
00:19:43.599 --> 00:19:44.319
It's so cool to do that.
00:19:44.480 --> 00:19:45.440
Then you had the pie.
00:19:46.720 --> 00:19:47.680
I was convinced.
00:19:48.559 --> 00:19:49.440
Okay, yeah.
00:19:50.640 --> 00:19:51.359
Go for it, Kathy.
00:19:51.759 --> 00:19:57.680
Well, I was just gonna add so we came to Westfield and looked around, kind of liked what we saw.
00:19:58.160 --> 00:20:04.720
We've been here before, and um, but it had grown a lot, and it was it was kind of exciting to see the growth.
00:20:04.960 --> 00:20:09.599
Um, put our house on the market, it sold in a couple of weeks.
00:20:09.839 --> 00:20:12.079
We actually got more than we asked for.
00:20:12.480 --> 00:20:14.960
So things were really falling into place pretty quickly.
00:20:15.039 --> 00:20:18.079
So that that was a good affirmation that we were making the right move.
00:20:18.319 --> 00:20:19.200
Yeah, amen.
00:20:20.319 --> 00:20:21.839
And we are so thankful, you guys.
00:20:22.240 --> 00:20:24.079
I'm so thankful, so thankful.
00:20:24.400 --> 00:20:27.920
Next on my list of people coming is now Dylan.
00:20:28.480 --> 00:20:40.640
And so, Jeff, I don't know if you I don't know what kind of conversation you had with Dylan, but it seems like I'm putting pieces together, the Lord was putting on your heart coming to the fields before you guys even knew each other were coming, in in a sense, which I think is really cool.
00:20:40.880 --> 00:20:42.079
Maybe Dylan or Jeff.
00:20:42.400 --> 00:20:44.160
Well, I'll tell you where it first came in my mind.
00:20:44.319 --> 00:20:49.359
They they they still claim they were not on a date, but I walked out late.
00:20:49.599 --> 00:20:50.319
You saw them like that.
00:20:50.640 --> 00:20:51.440
Yeah, we walked out.
00:20:51.599 --> 00:20:52.640
I I don't think you were there.
00:20:52.720 --> 00:21:01.279
I think I called you right after you saw them, and because there was supposed to be a third person there, and they're so we were walking through Rock Point on the way out.
00:21:01.680 --> 00:21:02.160
It was Rhett.
00:21:02.720 --> 00:21:03.200
It was Rhett.
00:21:04.000 --> 00:21:17.200
Rhett wasn't there, and it was just so we were walking out of the church, and we see Grace and Dylan eating tacos, probably still then, like I think after maybe worship or before or some sort of yeah, and uh, and I was like, Huh.
00:21:17.599 --> 00:21:18.799
Seven and I both on the way out.
00:21:18.880 --> 00:21:19.680
We're like, what's going on?
00:21:19.920 --> 00:21:25.200
You know, and I was like, you know, it'd be great to come along with us, would be Dylan.
00:21:26.400 --> 00:21:28.720
Like, let's start praying that relationship.
00:21:28.880 --> 00:21:34.000
And um, and I technically maybe you guys weren't on a date, but I just that's that's what we saw.
00:21:34.400 --> 00:21:35.279
Looked like a date.
00:21:35.440 --> 00:21:35.759
Hmm.
00:21:36.000 --> 00:21:37.920
Dylan, do you scare to speak?
00:21:38.720 --> 00:21:44.319
It was not a date, uh, though I was thankful that Rhett did not join us that morning.
00:21:44.720 --> 00:21:53.359
Um but yeah, I I had recently graduated from college a little bit over a year before.
00:21:53.599 --> 00:22:03.759
And um, you know, I had always been in a large church and After college, I moved to Columbus, Ohio.
00:22:04.000 --> 00:22:05.680
Was a part of a smaller church there.
00:22:05.839 --> 00:22:06.480
Really loved it.
00:22:06.640 --> 00:22:08.559
Really loved the community that I had there.
00:22:08.799 --> 00:22:15.839
And just kind of over the course of that year, and then also in the course of that year, I lived in Alaska for a summer.
00:22:16.079 --> 00:22:19.359
So didn't get much community there because it was in the middle of COVID.
00:22:19.440 --> 00:22:20.880
There were no small groups or anything like that.
00:22:20.960 --> 00:22:23.759
The small group I had when I was in Ohio was fantastic.
00:22:24.240 --> 00:22:43.279
And just kind of over the course of that year, coming out of college, I really had a heart for church plants and just kind of what they were doing in communities and really felt uh called to be a part of a church that's in a in the community that I'm in, um, which at the time I was in Crawfordsville and going to Rock Point serving there.
00:22:43.680 --> 00:22:54.720
But when I found out that Jeff was uh wanting to to plant in Westfield, um I had previously had an internship there and loved it and really hoped to move back to that area at some point.
00:22:54.799 --> 00:22:57.519
Um and so I just felt the Lord calling me there.
00:22:57.759 --> 00:23:02.160
Um and so I actually asked Jeff, I think to, I don't remember if it was breakfast or lunch.
00:23:02.240 --> 00:23:05.599
We met at a corner restaurant that is not there anymore.
00:23:05.759 --> 00:23:12.559
And uh we got together, we ate, and I told Jeff, I'm coming whether you like it or not.
00:23:12.880 --> 00:23:19.359
Um so um I just said hey, I'd love to be your tech guy and and uh help with that.
00:23:19.519 --> 00:23:25.519
And that's pretty much the uh the story of how I I decided I was gonna be joining the Fields Church.
00:23:25.680 --> 00:23:28.559
I'm sure Jeff was very happy to for you to be coming.
00:23:28.880 --> 00:23:30.319
That's a like it situation.
00:23:30.559 --> 00:23:36.160
That was a wonderful gift based on the fact that I'm like, I think I know how to use my phone.
00:23:36.240 --> 00:23:38.880
Um, and that's about the end of my tech knowledge.
00:23:39.039 --> 00:23:39.920
So really thankful.
00:23:40.000 --> 00:23:48.960
I did say, and I think it just needs to be I as soon as they started dating, I was like, I just need you to know if this doesn't work out, we're taking grace.
00:23:49.839 --> 00:23:52.240
We love you, we think you're the best.
00:23:52.400 --> 00:23:54.720
Um but we're taking grace.
00:23:54.799 --> 00:23:58.880
Uh but we really are so thankful for both of you and thankful that it that it worked out.
00:23:58.960 --> 00:24:01.680
And yeah, yeah, you guys have been seems to be working out.
00:24:01.759 --> 00:24:05.279
Yeah, uh we've uh uh just so just say we got to officiate their wedding too.
00:24:05.759 --> 00:24:06.559
Oh yeah.
00:24:07.599 --> 00:24:10.079
All of the all of these conversations happening in the year 2020.
00:24:10.160 --> 00:24:10.720
Am I right in that?
00:24:10.799 --> 00:24:11.839
Is this twenty or maybe early 2020?
00:24:12.079 --> 00:24:13.440
Dylan's early 21, maybe.
00:24:13.599 --> 00:24:14.319
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:24:14.559 --> 00:24:18.079
Yeah, I think yeah, I think it's probably probably early 21.
00:24:18.319 --> 00:24:18.880
Late 30.
00:24:19.200 --> 00:24:19.440
Yeah.
00:24:19.680 --> 00:24:20.000
Okay.
00:24:20.160 --> 00:24:24.799
And then the the last of the core team to join on my list is the houses, which is us talking here now.
00:24:24.960 --> 00:24:29.119
So my lovely wife might talk a little bit, or maybe Jeff will talk a little bit about his thoughts on it.
00:24:29.279 --> 00:24:29.680
Maybe not.
00:24:29.759 --> 00:24:31.200
Maybe my lovely wife will talk a little bit.
00:24:31.599 --> 00:24:32.079
That's great.
00:24:32.160 --> 00:24:32.640
Yeah.
00:24:33.039 --> 00:24:37.759
So we were, uh well, I had known Jeff and Steph since I was in mid middle school, really.
00:24:38.000 --> 00:24:48.160
And um, Joe and I had recently gotten engaged, and uh, Jeff and Steph were doing our premarital counseling, and so they kind of like dropped some hints in the early days of premarital counseling.
00:24:48.240 --> 00:24:57.279
And at the time we were Joe was living in Broad Ripple, and I was still in college, and we were going to a church in Broad Ripple that literally everyone was 25 or younger.
00:24:57.440 --> 00:24:59.680
And so we just loved the community there.
00:24:59.839 --> 00:25:02.240
Similarly, like our small group was amazing.
00:25:02.319 --> 00:25:06.400
We just had so many friends in our exact season of life, and so we looked around.
00:25:06.480 --> 00:25:10.480
I mean, you called the kings old, you all seemed super, super old compared to where we were coming from.
00:25:12.880 --> 00:25:15.519
Very, super old.
00:25:16.319 --> 00:25:17.279
We do have a comment on that.
00:25:17.599 --> 00:25:20.240
But well, yeah, I'll redeem that that thought in a little bit.
00:25:20.319 --> 00:25:22.079
But initially I was just like, nah, pass.
00:25:22.480 --> 00:25:31.920
We just have so many, you know, so many people in our exact season of life here that we yeah, that we want to really stay here and put down roots maybe in Broad Ripple if anyone does that.
00:25:32.000 --> 00:25:32.559
I don't know.
00:25:32.720 --> 00:25:35.279
Um, but it was not working out for us.
00:25:35.440 --> 00:25:40.240
So I was um my second semester, my senior year, could not find anywhere to work.
00:25:40.319 --> 00:25:42.799
Um we couldn't find anywhere for us to live.
00:25:42.960 --> 00:25:47.599
We had gotten so many um rejected offers on you know, houses that we were trying to buy and things like that.
00:25:47.680 --> 00:25:49.920
And yeah, it just felt like the Lord was closing.
00:25:50.319 --> 00:25:51.119
Prayer works, guys.
00:25:51.440 --> 00:25:55.920
And I know, and then now I know why we didn't get into rejecting us, prayed us out of it.
00:25:56.160 --> 00:25:56.480
Dang.
00:25:56.880 --> 00:25:58.799
So yeah, we just couldn't find anywhere to live.
00:25:58.880 --> 00:26:00.559
It felt like every door was closing.
00:26:00.799 --> 00:26:12.319
And um then I think after maybe a pretty emotional for me uh premarital counseling session where I was just in despair about our future, um they brought up Westfield again.
00:26:12.400 --> 00:26:17.519
And so I think Joe and I maybe started to kind of started to maybe look that direction a little bit.
00:26:17.680 --> 00:26:20.240
And then we applied to teach at the high school the same night.
00:26:20.400 --> 00:26:21.119
Joe and I did.
00:26:21.359 --> 00:26:23.839
Um he got hired in 30 seconds, I'm pretty sure.
00:26:24.160 --> 00:26:29.920
And a few weeks later they came around and realized we were a package deal, so I got hired as well.
00:26:30.079 --> 00:26:37.039
And I mean, we found the most perfect apartment, like the first place we looked, and yeah, the Lord was just flinging doors open at that point.
00:26:37.119 --> 00:26:42.720
So we finally said, We'll go with the oldies and we'll go, we'll go to Westfield.
00:26:42.880 --> 00:26:44.640
And we are so thankful we did.
00:26:44.960 --> 00:26:46.400
Yeah, it's been a huge joy.
00:26:46.480 --> 00:26:49.680
I think you you said most of it there, but I think uh we it was not our plan.
00:26:49.759 --> 00:26:53.279
We're like, yeah, the suburbs are for older people, we're young, we're gonna live in the city.
00:26:53.519 --> 00:27:03.440
And um, yeah, I one time we were like on a walk, we were I was visiting you at Taylor, we were on a walk in the streets of Upland, and you're like, I just don't know if I want to live in the city, and I think our hearts are just getting softened to it.
00:27:03.519 --> 00:27:05.759
And we had enjoyed our pre-marriage counseling with you guys.
00:27:05.839 --> 00:27:07.519
Jeff and Steph, thank you for for doing that.
00:27:07.599 --> 00:27:11.359
And um, our hearts just kept on getting softened to it.
00:27:11.599 --> 00:27:18.640
Um and the Lord drew us in, and yeah, the doors opened up for us to come, and we're really thankful that we have.
00:27:19.039 --> 00:27:21.359
So that's kind of how we all have have come to be.
00:27:21.440 --> 00:27:23.039
That is the the where we are now.
00:27:23.119 --> 00:27:45.279
Uh, next question I have for us uh is to talk about how our our Fields Church experience or how the Fields Church has become has maybe been different than what we maybe originally thought five or six or however many years ago when we kind of first committed to join and in those that uh span of time when we are in our kind of launch season of um equipping and uh growing and being at Castleview.
00:27:45.440 --> 00:27:54.960
Um so how the church has maybe been different than what we thought, and maybe we can start with perhaps the lines would it be or the kings?
00:27:55.200 --> 00:27:56.160
Let lines will start.
00:27:56.240 --> 00:28:03.680
Maybe like the maybe how the fields has been surprising or um things have been yeah, what's been surprising to you in the time?
00:28:04.000 --> 00:28:06.559
Yeah, I mean, I mean, really just how much it's grown.
00:28:06.720 --> 00:28:10.480
I mean, I'm I I don't know if anyone else is wanting to say there anything, so I'm gonna take it first.
00:28:10.720 --> 00:28:20.799
But um, I mean, it's just it incredible how much it's grown, especially like it just seems like after every summer there's always like a big August bump, and then it doesn't like disappear.
00:28:20.880 --> 00:28:29.440
Like that's like the new church, you know, every year there's always just like an abundance of people, uh, and and and you know, so so grateful for that.
00:28:29.599 --> 00:28:41.119
We started with what 40 44 something, and so now I mean it's just it's just fantastic to see you know so many new people coming in and then staying um to to be a part of it.
00:28:41.200 --> 00:28:44.640
Uh uh and just uh I mean that's hugely surprising.
00:28:44.799 --> 00:28:48.559
Um maybe also surprising not in a building yet, but that's fine.
00:28:48.799 --> 00:28:50.799
Um but that's that's all right.
00:28:51.039 --> 00:29:00.000
So I would also I would like to redeem what I said now about the old people because um I we're listening.
00:29:01.359 --> 00:29:01.920
Let's hear it.
00:29:02.000 --> 00:29:02.640
Come on, Kelly.
00:29:02.880 --> 00:29:03.039
Come on.
00:29:03.440 --> 00:29:07.039
I've been blown away just by how many young people are pouring into the suburbs.
00:29:07.119 --> 00:29:10.720
I mean, it's not all soccer moms, like the stereotypes would would have it dubbed.
00:29:10.799 --> 00:29:18.720
And um, I mean, yeah, just an abundance of really, really sweet young adult community, um, but then community really through every age.
00:29:18.880 --> 00:29:25.920
And I have just been blown away by what a blessing, what a tremendous blessing the multi-generational aspect of the fields is.
00:29:26.079 --> 00:29:40.799
Um, because man, when you go through something really, really hard, it's like I I just want to be surrounded by people who are a little further down the road, who have also walked through really hard things, who are not, you know, my age, but who are um, yeah, sometimes 40, 50 years older.
00:29:40.960 --> 00:29:48.720
And so um just been so deeply loved and poured into and so thankful for the wisdom of every single life stage that exists there.
00:29:48.799 --> 00:29:52.400
So that's been surprising and something that we are so grateful for.
00:29:52.960 --> 00:30:01.279
Well, Callie, we'll consider that a uh uh backpedaling of sorts, but especially since you have two soccer moms sitting at the table right now.
00:30:01.440 --> 00:30:02.400
Soccer moms.
00:30:04.960 --> 00:30:20.799
But but there's another element to this, and you know, Kathy and I both have talked, you know, many times about the uh the the level and depth of intimacy between the people that have gathered at the fields, young and old, cross-generational.
00:30:21.200 --> 00:30:37.359
But the other, the backstory of this, when we were at Castleview, uh we we looked around at this core group, and there were a lot of young kids, and we were the old people, and we were a little bit, we were just a little bit, you know, frustrated by that.
00:30:37.759 --> 00:30:46.480
Uh, and then it wasn't until we really got into one of the fellowship groups there, you know, the Evans and Gilligan's and whatnot, we said, okay, we can do this.
00:30:46.640 --> 00:30:49.920
Uh, and then we got to the fields, and we were still the oldest.
00:30:50.559 --> 00:31:01.839
So you want to add to that, well, yeah, but I I think for me the the the biggest difference is that I wasn't expecting it how close friendships are developing.
00:31:02.319 --> 00:31:14.400
How people have come from so many different places, different states, and we've come together, and in such a short time we've become such a close family, a church family that I've never seen before.
00:31:14.640 --> 00:31:19.200
We read about it, we studied about it with the nine nine marks church and all that.
00:31:19.359 --> 00:31:25.440
Um but here we were, we were actually doing it, and we're seeing it and we're living it right now, and that is just beautiful.
00:31:25.599 --> 00:31:26.400
I just love it.
00:31:28.079 --> 00:31:32.319
Mangles, maybe you guys things that have been surprising to you guys in in our church plane.
00:31:32.880 --> 00:31:42.480
I would just add to Kathy's because I I don't think I had really understood what how God designed the church to be until coming here.
00:31:42.559 --> 00:32:02.000
I don't know if it's like starting something from the ground up, but just walking in and seeing people and knowing who they are and knowing their story, and then being able to like I don't know, be close with someone who is in their 70s, but then also be great friends with someone who's 16.
00:32:02.559 --> 00:32:06.160
Um it's just been yeah, just very sweet.
00:32:06.799 --> 00:32:07.279
Very sweet.
00:32:08.000 --> 00:32:18.960
I think one thing for me is just how uh willing people are to serve, uh especially in just the the season that we're in as a church, being super early on.
00:32:19.039 --> 00:32:48.160
We're meeting in a school and um just the generosity of people with their time um and to to come in early on Sunday mornings to set up all of the children's area, to set up the cafeteria so that we have places to sit, to put all the chairs out so that we can worship in in the big room for um all of our wonderful musicians that we have on Sunday mornings to uh tech people who aren't tech people but they are willing to try.
00:32:48.319 --> 00:32:50.559
Um they've become tech people because of you.
00:32:51.839 --> 00:32:57.599
Uh so it just I think just the willingness of people to serve um in so many different areas.
00:32:57.680 --> 00:33:12.559
I think there was maybe a little bit of fear on my part uh early on when it was just the ten of us that are people going to help because this is gonna burn out really quick if if we don't get um people to help serve.
00:33:12.640 --> 00:33:16.880
Um, but we've been blessed by an incredible congregation.
00:33:17.119 --> 00:33:21.599
Um and I and I think that has grown so many friendships.
00:33:21.839 --> 00:33:32.640
Um I mean as a result of it, uh when Grace and I were looking to buy a house, we moved in with a a couple for two weeks in between our lease ending and when we could move into our house.
00:33:32.880 --> 00:33:45.759
So I mean it it's just been super incredible and and that's grown uh so many friendships just in the midst of serving alongside people in really what I would consider a hard season of planting a church.
00:33:45.920 --> 00:33:52.319
Um and so it's just bred so many wonderful things through serving the Lord together.
00:33:53.200 --> 00:33:53.680
Amen.
00:33:53.839 --> 00:33:55.519
I'm curious to hear what the the Stricklands would say.
00:33:55.599 --> 00:33:57.440
I had a couple of thoughts maybe from me.
00:33:57.519 --> 00:34:04.480
Uh I I don't even know if we really could even picture what it was going to be like four years from the start.
00:34:04.559 --> 00:34:08.239
It is just like I think we're like, I guess we're just gonna start and see what happens.
00:34:08.320 --> 00:34:12.400
And um, so I think maybe need not expectations, but I think for me, I don't know if others would echo this too.
00:34:12.480 --> 00:34:17.280
I think I kind of thought the and granted, we didn't come on as on staff, we were just coming on as as members.
00:34:17.440 --> 00:34:26.639
I kind of thought, oh, the this church plant is gonna be uh something that we kind of endure in addition to our normal lives, so that we're gonna have our normal things and then also, oh, we'll also be part of this church.
00:34:26.880 --> 00:34:37.440
And really it's like this has become the the kind of the the hub of all of our community, of who we are, like our our life has been more actually centered around the church.
00:34:37.599 --> 00:34:48.559
In some ways, now we work for the church, so that maybe is uh different than some people might say, but I think for a lot of people would experience like, oh, this actually is not you know the cliche saying with not an event that we come to and leave, but a people that we belong to.
00:34:48.639 --> 00:34:50.000
Uh there's a truth to that.
00:34:50.159 --> 00:34:56.000
I know we say it a lot of times, um, but I think that has been a change in how I've viewed uh church in general.
00:34:56.159 --> 00:35:02.559
Um, and but I think especially has been true at the field church, especially I think for us uh in that so surprisingly good for us.
00:35:03.440 --> 00:35:04.400
Maybe Steph.
00:35:04.480 --> 00:35:08.239
How's it been surprising to you that that we that it's that's gone, that it's got off the ground?
00:35:08.719 --> 00:35:09.119
We're still here.
00:35:09.360 --> 00:35:10.880
So we are here, we are at speedway.
00:35:11.119 --> 00:35:21.920
We are in Westfield, and um I think we when Jeff and I were early married on and in Louisville for his master's and PhD, we had been part of a church plant down there.
00:35:22.159 --> 00:35:25.119
Um and it was a few more years down the road and so well established.
00:35:25.199 --> 00:35:26.559
So I knew what it could be.
00:35:26.719 --> 00:35:28.400
I knew what it could look like.
00:35:28.559 --> 00:35:30.079
Um and that was exciting.
00:35:30.320 --> 00:35:36.079
Um, what it was gonna take to get there and the years and the work and the literal blood, sweat, and tears.
00:35:36.159 --> 00:35:44.639
I didn't really know what all that would be, um, but I knew what it could be, um, especially just being faithful to the Lord um and just being obedient to his calling.
00:35:44.800 --> 00:35:47.199
So that was super exciting and encouraging.
00:35:47.599 --> 00:35:56.400
Um, once we started doing our I thought they were vision meetings, information meetings, what we called them, those Sunday afternoons in the cafe.
00:35:56.880 --> 00:35:57.599
Super exciting.
00:35:59.039 --> 00:36:01.119
I'll be honest, guys, they were terrible.
00:36:01.360 --> 00:36:01.920
Those were rough.
00:36:02.000 --> 00:36:02.159
Yeah.
00:36:02.400 --> 00:36:03.519
I did not enjoy them.
00:36:03.599 --> 00:36:07.440
I always walked away discouraged and worried.
00:36:07.599 --> 00:36:10.559
And I was never really worried until we had those meetings and then left.
00:36:10.639 --> 00:36:12.480
And then I got worried, and then I was fine.
00:36:13.039 --> 00:36:19.920
But once we started having true Sunday worship together, it just snowballed and kept going.
00:36:20.159 --> 00:36:23.519
And the Lord just continued to be faithful and people kept coming.
00:36:23.679 --> 00:36:25.039
And that was just what was so exciting.
00:36:25.119 --> 00:36:28.559
I'm like, people are coming and people are coming back after Sunday after Sunday.
00:36:28.719 --> 00:36:36.800
And so it was just so um exciting to see um like our worship team grow, to see our the kids grow.
00:36:37.039 --> 00:36:46.079
Um looking back, I look back at like our first like Faith's giving when it was literally like the 10 of us having Thanksgiving in our house.
00:36:46.559 --> 00:36:51.840
Um, to now we are running out of chairs at Maple Glen to even have Fieldsgiving.
00:36:51.920 --> 00:36:58.079
So it's just been overwhelmingly um just encouraging to see the Lord's goodness and faithfulness in it all.
00:36:58.400 --> 00:36:58.559
Yeah.
00:36:58.719 --> 00:36:59.280
Amen to that.
00:36:59.440 --> 00:37:12.880
I'm I mean, I think some of the things, there's so much in my mind uh thinking about this, but I do think sometimes I probably come off as a being a more of a dreamer and uh like wanting to vision and think things through and all that.
00:37:13.039 --> 00:37:16.639
I I think I probably look like I have a lot more confidence than I actually do.
00:37:16.800 --> 00:37:23.760
Um I I honestly like every day since we've begun, I I it's like pinching myself.
00:37:23.840 --> 00:37:25.119
Like I really am just shocked.
00:37:25.199 --> 00:37:31.920
I mean, I really I think I never actually thought I I mean I you guys are like, oh, thanks for letting us know that now.
00:37:32.320 --> 00:37:36.000
I just didn't, I just I don't know that I really believed it was gonna happen.
00:37:36.159 --> 00:37:36.960
I mean, I really don't.
00:37:37.119 --> 00:37:41.360
I mean, I I won one praying and hoped and that sort of thing.
00:37:41.440 --> 00:37:44.239
But I think deep down I was just, I'm like, I just don't know.
00:37:44.400 --> 00:37:53.760
Certainly during the information meeting um time, I was like, man, I just don't know um if this is gonna get off the ground and um if we can do this.
00:37:53.920 --> 00:38:04.880
And um, you know, you hear what some of you guys may know this, may not, but um, when you're going through church planting training, uh, the they just have one message and it's like you're gonna die.
00:38:05.039 --> 00:38:06.000
Like it's awful.
00:38:06.159 --> 00:38:09.119
It's sort of like don't shake the baby when you're getting your first kid.
00:38:09.280 --> 00:38:13.440
Like it's just this like it's you're just it's so hard.
00:38:13.599 --> 00:38:20.239
Like it's like opening a restaurant, like 90% of them don't make it, and you're coming out of COVID doing it.
00:38:20.400 --> 00:38:22.960
Like, it's just, and I'm like, I am not.
00:38:23.360 --> 00:38:27.599
There are guys that I know that I'm like, yeah, that dude should plant a church.
00:38:27.760 --> 00:38:30.559
Like he, like, I just I'm like, that is not me.
00:38:30.800 --> 00:38:33.760
Um, so I I just think I had a ton of doubt coming in.
00:38:33.840 --> 00:38:41.920
Uh really, I mean, I honestly looking around the table, like this, I mean, you having you guys with us was massive.
00:38:42.079 --> 00:38:43.039
I mean, massive.
00:38:43.199 --> 00:38:50.960
I think that I I'm like, I don't know if anybody would come to this church or be a part of this church, but I know with you guys sitting around the table, I think they will.
00:38:51.039 --> 00:38:53.519
Like, I really do think that will help.
00:38:53.599 --> 00:39:03.119
Um, as just the the real, genuine love for Christ, love for others, uh, giftedness, things like that, uh, was huge from the beginning.
00:39:03.280 --> 00:39:09.599
Um, and so yeah, I really do feel like it it has been it has not been easy.
00:39:09.760 --> 00:39:13.519
And um, but it has been so much better than I thought it was gonna be.
00:39:13.599 --> 00:39:20.000
And I tell people this all the time like the past four years are easily my favorite four years in ministry, and it's not even close.
00:39:20.239 --> 00:39:31.519
Um, and uh I think I'm surprised often to see like not only like I know like the friendships, the the relationships, the family that we have at this table right now, I expected that.
00:39:31.599 --> 00:39:34.960
Like, I I mean we had built some of that early on, knew that.
00:39:35.119 --> 00:39:47.280
But now to like people that are new, like that we've never known, like I had known now to see like so many, even for the first little bit of time, I'm like, well, there's still a lot of like Crawfordsville connections, some people we knew before.
00:39:47.519 --> 00:40:01.360
There's just so many people now that the Lord has brought uh to the church that are just incredible godly people to be able to get to see some people who didn't even know Jesus, come to know Christ through the church is incredible.
00:40:01.519 --> 00:40:05.440
Uh so yeah, it has been we are not a perfect church.
00:40:05.599 --> 00:40:08.960
It has not been a perfect journey, um, but it has been really sweet.
00:40:09.039 --> 00:40:14.719
And yeah, I I mean I really do think often I'm I feel like I'm pinching myself because it has just been that sweet.
00:40:15.360 --> 00:40:16.000
Praise the Lord.
00:40:16.159 --> 00:40:17.599
Well, I have one last question for us.
00:40:17.679 --> 00:40:28.880
I'm gonna if on our combining our our two last questions, but uh for us, either uh something to share from from the early days, so even in the the time at Castleview or the interest meeting days, the info meeting interest meetings.
00:40:29.440 --> 00:40:30.239
That was it was interesting.
00:40:30.320 --> 00:40:31.599
That's better than information meetings.
00:40:31.679 --> 00:40:32.000
Yeah, yeah.
00:40:32.159 --> 00:40:32.559
Interest meetings.
00:40:32.719 --> 00:40:33.599
I think we can't tell what it was.
00:40:33.920 --> 00:40:36.880
If you were there at the the info interest meetings, they were a little tough.
00:40:37.119 --> 00:40:39.440
It was a little bit of is this gonna go, I don't know.
00:40:39.760 --> 00:40:54.320
Um so maybe for us round table to share either from from those seasons or from our first couple of Sundays or things going on, uh, or something that you especially I think we've kind of shared some all the way, something that you especially has been encouraging to you about the Fields Church um over the course of these four years and that.
00:40:54.480 --> 00:40:56.159
Um anyone want to kick us off?
00:40:56.480 --> 00:40:57.280
I'll kick us off.
00:40:57.519 --> 00:40:58.159
Kick us off, Doug.
00:40:58.400 --> 00:41:00.079
I'm not I'm not shy.
00:41:00.400 --> 00:41:01.199
Oh, we know that, Doug.
00:41:01.440 --> 00:41:04.559
Kathy, Kathy and I talk about this all the time.
00:41:04.880 --> 00:41:14.400
Um we have been a member of four different churches from Stunny First Street and Rock Point, Castle View, and now the Fields, and we still have strong connections with all of those.
00:41:15.519 --> 00:41:32.159
If we hadn't answered the call uh to plant this church, there are easily 200 people that we never ever would have met, never ever would have created long-lasting intimate relationships with.
00:41:32.960 --> 00:41:45.840
None of them are sitting here at this table, but there are easily 200 people that we've become so close to that we never would have even known had we not um committed to following that calling.
00:41:46.079 --> 00:41:53.119
And for me personally, the greatest thing that I have felt like God has called me to do is to teach at Quorme Dale.
00:41:53.440 --> 00:41:59.119
That never would have happened had I not had Kathy not not made that made that commitment.
00:41:59.440 --> 00:42:15.760
So it's been such a blessing for us to know that that we can see the fruit of our labors and that God has led us because of faithful preaching and teaching and singing and all the things that we've done to be faithful to the calling, to be obedient to that calling.
00:42:16.000 --> 00:42:17.360
It's just been a blessing.
00:42:17.840 --> 00:42:18.480
Praise the Lord.
00:42:18.639 --> 00:42:20.000
It's uh it it's fun for me.
00:42:20.079 --> 00:42:26.159
I don't know if I can if I'm allowed to say this right, to tell just some Doug King stories of I feel like in the first the first the start of the.
00:42:27.280 --> 00:42:32.800
Well, we can't tell them all, but just maybe like uh everyone when we would go out and anywhere, Doug King is talking to everyone.
00:42:32.880 --> 00:42:37.360
It's like, hey, we're playing a church, like we're meeting people, the waitress of the restaurant, hey, we're playing a church here.
00:42:37.519 --> 00:42:39.199
Like, yeah, everyone that we would talk to.
00:42:39.599 --> 00:42:41.199
Michigan, Hedgeh wants you to know.
00:42:41.760 --> 00:42:44.400
Probably come to Westfield's church starting up.
00:42:44.800 --> 00:42:49.679
The best Doug King story, though, is uh uh uh, and I think a couple of us have said blood, sweat, and tears.
00:42:49.840 --> 00:43:04.400
Doug King, I think, is playing racquetball on one morning, busts his head open on the side of the wall, and whoever then comes to give him medical care, instead of you know instead of you know being a patient, Doug's like, we're planning a church in Westfield.
00:43:05.760 --> 00:43:06.880
And they showed up.
00:43:07.039 --> 00:43:09.280
They came in the king.
00:43:09.519 --> 00:43:10.159
It's amazing.
00:43:10.480 --> 00:43:15.280
Jeff tells me you don't have to bleed to a witness for the church.
00:43:15.599 --> 00:43:16.960
Doug will anyway, though.
00:43:17.760 --> 00:43:21.760
I uh I I tell people this all the time, and Doug, I think I've told you too.
00:43:21.840 --> 00:43:26.159
Uh, when anybody comes and preaches at our church, I'm like, here's what you want to do when you finish preaching.
00:43:26.320 --> 00:43:28.400
You just want to find, and I'll show them to you before.
00:43:28.480 --> 00:43:37.360
You want to find Doug King and you want to talk to him after you're preaching, because he will be the greatest encouragement to you when you feel at your absolute lowest after preaching.
00:43:37.519 --> 00:43:39.119
Um, and uh brother, you just are.
00:43:39.280 --> 00:43:46.400
I mean, uh, and I think uh just such an encouragement to um I mean that's that's in in some ways how God has wired you uh for people.
00:43:46.480 --> 00:43:48.480
And I think that's yeah, something I think about often.
00:43:48.719 --> 00:43:50.559
Well, Jeff, we have lots to be thankful for.
00:43:50.880 --> 00:43:56.559
You are a remarkable preacher, and you've led all of us to different levels of understanding of scripture.
00:43:56.880 --> 00:43:58.960
See why I go to Doug after every time I preach.
00:44:00.079 --> 00:44:03.119
Everyone else seems in here with the thing like, I mean, he's fine.
00:44:04.000 --> 00:44:06.320
But that seems a little overstated.
00:44:07.199 --> 00:44:08.480
That's why I go to Dick.
00:44:10.239 --> 00:44:11.760
Callie, thoughts from you?
00:44:12.400 --> 00:44:16.880
Yeah, I do remember um just thinking back to those interest meetings, which were tough.
00:44:16.960 --> 00:44:23.760
And we're in the middle of sunny days in the summer when we had an apartment pool, and I should have been, yeah, sunbathing.
00:44:23.920 --> 00:44:25.440
I'm here in this cafeteria.
00:44:25.760 --> 00:44:31.280
Um, I remember Aaron Stoffer like running through the door, and they had somewhere to go, so they couldn't even stay for the whole meeting.
00:44:31.360 --> 00:44:34.000
But she just looked at me and she was like, hey, we're gonna join.
00:44:34.239 --> 00:44:42.400
And I like that's like the first person I really heard from just someone who had kind of walked in off the street and uh just said, we're doing this.
00:44:42.480 --> 00:44:46.559
And I remember the excitement and thinking, oh my goodness, this might actually take off.
00:44:46.639 --> 00:44:52.079
And and just how yeah, fun that was and how much of the Lord's faithfulness was painted all over that.
00:44:52.239 --> 00:45:12.159
Um, even thinking to now, like that's something I don't want to lose when I meet new people, just seeing God's faithfulness that he brought them in the door, and uh we have an opportunity to become church family with them and love on them is something that yeah, as tough as those early days were, um, and just holding your breath every conversation, waiting for someone to say, ah, no, this isn't the place for us.
00:45:12.400 --> 00:45:19.360
Like there were so many sweet glimpses of God's goodness where people just stuck around and that continued to grow and continued to happen.
00:45:19.519 --> 00:45:21.920
So I it's fun to think back to that.
00:45:22.000 --> 00:45:26.960
And and I hope I can keep up some of that same zeal and excitement with every new person that walks in.
00:45:30.559 --> 00:45:38.559
Um I'm just thinking back to all the families that have come to the fields and have joined and friends and um that we didn't know before.
00:45:38.639 --> 00:45:43.440
And these past four years have been such a huge blessing to us in our marriage and our family.
00:45:43.760 --> 00:45:49.280
And um it's just so encouraging to hear how it's a blessing to others.
00:45:49.440 --> 00:46:00.960
Um, and so many times we've done membership interviews or just have people over to our house for dessert and coffee, and time and time again hear them say, We've been longing for a church like the Fields.
00:46:01.280 --> 00:46:06.960
Um, and it's just an overwhelming, like on repeat sound from so many members.
00:46:07.119 --> 00:46:09.360
Um, like we've been looking for two to three years.
00:46:09.440 --> 00:46:14.480
We've tried so many churches, we've been waiting and waiting, and we've never found a church like the Fields.
00:46:14.559 --> 00:46:32.480
And so that has just been um just such an encouragement, and um, I hope that just continues to echo uh for a long time that this is just a church that people long for um and want to be a part of because it really has just been such a huge blessing to me personally and to just our family as a whole.
00:46:37.119 --> 00:46:45.519
Um I think something that Ian and I have just always been praying for is just like community for our family and people that don't just love us, but like love our kids.
00:46:45.760 --> 00:47:01.199
Um and I think we have really experienced that at the fields, um even with some of the older community, like Jackson, our four-year-old loves Jackson just loves to sit at the table with and just tell stories.
00:47:01.360 --> 00:47:09.599
I'm not really sure what those are sometimes, but um and I think uh yeah, people just pulling our kids in to help do things.
00:47:09.760 --> 00:47:18.400
And um I think we have a ton of people that we've that have like taken our kids when we needed to go do something or Strickland's.
00:47:18.559 --> 00:47:25.840
I think we dropped our kids off at like 5 30 one morning when I needed to go to the ER and um just countless things like that.
00:47:26.000 --> 00:47:33.199
Um just people loving our kids for who they are, and um yeah, we've really cherished that.
00:47:34.320 --> 00:47:35.840
Ian, sorry, no?
00:47:36.400 --> 00:47:36.880
Mangleds?
00:47:37.119 --> 00:47:38.960
Ian Mangles, Grace.
00:47:39.599 --> 00:47:41.840
We only have three mics doing this too.
00:47:42.000 --> 00:47:45.679
It's been uh I think we're doing great, but it's been Grace.
00:47:46.079 --> 00:47:50.159
I remember at at the beginning just thinking, like, oh man, I'm so worried.
00:47:50.320 --> 00:47:51.840
Is it just gonna be me?
00:47:52.400 --> 00:47:53.519
Like for the longest time.
00:47:54.719 --> 00:47:59.039
Um, but Ashley was there, I think, right from the very first interest meeting.
00:47:59.280 --> 00:48:28.639
And she's been such a huge blessing, but to see where like we've grown, we now have like 22 members on our music team, and they just make leading so easy because they're they're just people who really love Jesus and they've stewarded the gifts that um that God has given them so well, and they're just using it to serve the church, and so it's just such a joy to to lead with each and every one of them.
00:48:29.119 --> 00:48:32.559
So also a crazy number of violinists for a church plant.
00:48:32.719 --> 00:48:34.320
Oh yeah, five ones.
00:48:34.719 --> 00:48:35.599
Four or five at least.
00:48:35.920 --> 00:48:36.880
And we have a cello.
00:48:37.039 --> 00:48:37.599
And a cello.
00:48:37.840 --> 00:48:38.800
Actually, I think we have two cellos.
00:48:39.360 --> 00:48:39.840
Cellists.
00:48:39.920 --> 00:48:41.039
That's kind of unheard of.
00:48:44.320 --> 00:48:44.719
Crazy.
00:48:45.360 --> 00:48:45.679
There we go.
00:48:45.760 --> 00:48:47.599
And no trouble or starting something.
00:48:49.599 --> 00:48:53.920
Yeah, well, and I played sax in high school too, but I don't know if you want me up there.
00:48:55.039 --> 00:49:02.880
Um interesting story that I remember, um, and maybe I'm gonna put my foot in my mouth for a second time for this.
00:49:03.119 --> 00:49:11.280
Um, but during the interest meetings, uh, we were instructed to come up and uh inform everybody how we were serving.
00:49:11.440 --> 00:49:16.960
And um I decided it would be a good idea to tell everybody that I make Grace sound good.
00:49:17.199 --> 00:49:22.079
Um and I continue to do that.
00:49:23.840 --> 00:49:28.480
No, she makes herself sound good, and it's been a blessing to serve alongside her.
00:49:28.639 --> 00:49:48.800
I think that's been um probably one of the really cool things about ministry um in this season is that I get to do it with my wife, and we were newly married and learning how to um to serve alongside each other in really such a close capacity that we had never done before.
00:49:48.880 --> 00:49:54.480
We served together at Rock Point um from afar, more or less.
00:49:54.639 --> 00:50:03.360
Um, but we were having to figure out how to back a trailer together, and if you've ever backed a trailer as a couple, you you know how tense that can get.
00:50:03.920 --> 00:50:13.199
Um so it there's yeah, it's it's been really sweet getting to do ministry with my wife over the last four years, four and a half years.
00:50:13.920 --> 00:50:14.480
So sweet.
00:50:14.719 --> 00:50:15.119
So sweet.
00:50:15.199 --> 00:50:17.840
I think I just had just barely forgotten you saying that, Dylan.
00:50:17.920 --> 00:50:18.880
Now I remember it again.
00:50:20.239 --> 00:50:21.599
Ian, how about from you?
00:50:22.079 --> 00:50:27.920
Yeah, I think I mean, along with what everyone else is saying here, I think I can I think it kind of like uh uh blends in with everything.
00:50:28.079 --> 00:50:41.039
It's just the the emphasis that, and I think a lot of credit goes to Jeff and the other elders, is just the emphasis on on just intentionality with the people, especially like members.
00:50:41.199 --> 00:50:48.320
Like it's not just like all right, you showed up to this class, you sign this paper, all right, you're a member, you know, oh great, right?
00:50:48.719 --> 00:50:55.519
It's you know, are you coming to you know, if you haven't seen you in a while, you know, someone's reaching out, and you know, you're a member.
00:50:55.599 --> 00:50:58.400
Here's like 10 ways, 15 ways you can serve.
00:50:58.480 --> 00:50:59.760
And like most of you are doing it.
00:50:59.840 --> 00:51:06.320
Like, what is it like 70, 80 percent or something like that, or lots of you know, even more than that are serving.
00:51:06.719 --> 00:51:19.039
And uh it's even and I think I asked you a question or something, or or or uh you mentioned it once that like you know, if you're you know, people who are getting baptized, we also want you to be members so you're not alone.
00:51:19.199 --> 00:51:24.239
Like, like it's not like you're just getting baptized and then like, okay, yeah, it you're a member.
00:51:24.320 --> 00:51:25.920
Like, let's let's come alongside.
00:51:26.000 --> 00:51:36.320
And there's just such an intentionality to the membership, or even if you're not a member, just like just getting into your life and and how can you help?
00:51:36.400 --> 00:51:37.360
How can we help you?
00:51:37.840 --> 00:51:38.880
How can you serve the church?
00:51:38.960 --> 00:51:44.639
Because serving in the church, you know, gets you uh more involved and and loving in the church and the church loving you back.
00:51:44.880 --> 00:51:47.519
And it's just you know, credit to you, Jeff.
00:51:47.760 --> 00:51:52.000
I'm sure some of that comes from Castle View as you were like working on, you know, let's really focus.
00:51:52.079 --> 00:51:56.320
One of the main things being, you know, how can we help our members be members?
00:51:56.480 --> 00:51:58.880
What does membership mean in the church?
00:51:59.119 --> 00:52:03.599
And then the elders come alongside you, and Joe and Braden coming alongside even with that.
00:52:03.840 --> 00:52:07.679
Um, yeah, I I just I just love that um about our church.
00:52:07.920 --> 00:52:13.199
I actually remember I was when we were thinking about planting, and um I was getting ready to teach a class.
00:52:13.360 --> 00:52:36.559
My final class I taught at Rock Point was on the Sermon on the Mount, and um I was reading um Martin Lloyd Jones had this sermons on uh the sermon, sermons on the sermon on the mount, and uh his first introduction had something like this, and I'm gonna butcher it a little bit, but essentially it's like what this world needs is not more programs and more events and um you know more cool ideas and all these sorts of things.
00:52:36.719 --> 00:52:42.639
What this uh world needs, and he's talking about from a Christian perspective, it just needs true Christians actually living it out.
00:52:42.800 --> 00:52:56.079
Like just like if you want to see like the kingdom grow, like Christ glorified, that like the Great Commission, you just need Christians together, like like actually being real, living it out.
00:52:56.159 --> 00:53:05.199
And and I just remember thinking in that sort of time of like, man, what if we just had, and and Rock Point was such a great example of this, but I was wanting to see more of this.
00:53:05.280 --> 00:53:13.760
I'm like, what if we had a church where every member just knew that what it meant to be a member was to help other people follow Jesus?
00:53:13.920 --> 00:53:24.960
Like it was not like our main thing wasn't someone on a stage or you know, some sort of program or this by like, but but it was actually one another, like helping each other grow in a Christ.
00:53:25.039 --> 00:53:31.119
Like, what if we were just real Christians living out the Christian life together, being on mission together, those sorts of things.
00:53:31.360 --> 00:53:34.320
And that was sort of the dream in my head at that time.
00:53:34.480 --> 00:53:41.440
And now just to look, and again, man, we have ways to grow and all of us and that sort of thing, but it's just like, oh, that is what the Lord's doing.
00:53:41.599 --> 00:53:49.280
Uh, like in every single little facet, everybody I meet, it seems like on a Sunday out coming out the door, when I'm like, hey, how did you hear about the fields?
00:53:49.440 --> 00:53:51.039
Like, oh yeah, so and so.
00:53:51.280 --> 00:53:56.239
Uh I like I met them at work, I met them at the park, uh, I saw them at a baseball game.
00:53:56.400 --> 00:54:00.559
Like, I just so and so told me about like the church.
00:54:00.719 --> 00:54:02.800
And and that's right, and it's just such an encouragement to me.
00:54:02.880 --> 00:54:09.920
So I I think that's one of the things that I like just think on so often is just like, oh man, it really is kind of simple.
00:54:10.079 --> 00:54:20.719
Like, like true Christians who who love Jesus and who Jesus has saved, just doing like being the church together and and really being just trying to be faithful.
00:54:20.800 --> 00:54:24.079
Um, and to see the fruit of that has just been has been so sweet.
00:54:24.239 --> 00:54:24.480
All right.
00:54:25.039 --> 00:54:33.760
Well, hey, thank you all for taking time to be here today, but thank you all for all the time and effort you've put in over the last five years in all that you guys do to love and serve our people.
00:54:33.840 --> 00:54:37.840
And I know uh those listen there's a lot been a lot of people who've been from the early days of the fields.
00:54:37.920 --> 00:54:43.840
Um, but I think it's what uh I kind of clear to see in this is um you guys love the fields church.
00:54:43.920 --> 00:54:44.559
I'm with that too.
00:54:44.639 --> 00:54:45.679
We we we love our church.
00:54:45.760 --> 00:54:55.760
Uh we're not a perfect church by any means, and uh I think we can all echo there's been hard seasons over the last six to four years, whenever you've come on, but it's also been a joy too.
00:54:55.920 --> 00:55:02.800
And um, the Christian life is both joy and sorrow and hardship and rejoicing all at the same time in that.
00:55:02.960 --> 00:55:05.519
And I think part of that has just come out tonight in this.
00:55:05.599 --> 00:55:09.119
So if you've made it through this podcast, this is the longest one.
00:55:09.599 --> 00:55:10.400
How long are we, Jeff?
00:55:10.639 --> 00:55:11.920
We are under an under an hour.
00:55:12.000 --> 00:55:12.159
Okay.
00:55:12.320 --> 00:55:12.719
Under an hour.
00:55:13.119 --> 00:55:13.519
Great.
00:55:13.760 --> 00:55:15.599
Um, Jeff, any closing thoughts for us?
00:55:15.840 --> 00:55:25.039
Yeah, I think just really briefly, I mean, I I we probably actually this is like one of the first times we've actually done this uh in quite a while, just to get sort of the original 10 together.
00:55:25.119 --> 00:55:28.239
And some of that is uh like I sometimes feel guilty about that.
00:55:28.320 --> 00:55:30.320
I'm like, oh man, we should do this more often.
00:55:30.480 --> 00:55:32.960
Um I probably don't thank you guys enough.
00:55:33.039 --> 00:55:39.679
Uh just as like I look back and thinking about man, it was crazy in some sense for Steph and I to jump.
00:55:39.840 --> 00:55:42.159
It was so much crazier for you to jump behind us.
00:55:42.320 --> 00:55:51.440
Uh so like uh I mean, at least in some ways, I, you know, had this is what I did, like this is my career and some of those sorts of things, and um had some vision.
00:55:51.599 --> 00:55:54.880
I'm like, oh man, it it still amazes me every day.
00:55:54.960 --> 00:56:01.360
Uh I thank God daily that uh you guys jumped with us, that the Lord called you to do so.
00:56:01.440 --> 00:56:06.159
Uh and it's been, I I honestly, I mean, I I mean this from the depths.
00:56:06.239 --> 00:56:08.400
Like, and I think this is so clear.
00:56:08.559 --> 00:56:19.519
Like the Fields Church is is in no way like my church, in the sense of like, I like I look around and I'm like, man, you guys have shaped the fields every bit as much as I have.
00:56:19.679 --> 00:56:23.679
Obviously, it's the Lord's church him doing that, but just that's across the board in our church.
00:56:23.840 --> 00:56:31.280
Like, I take I think it's really crazy to be four years in, and I plan on going nowhere if the Lord gives me uh a lot of years here.
00:56:31.440 --> 00:56:35.599
Um, but I'm like, man, you you could take us out of the equation and our church would be fine.
00:56:35.760 --> 00:56:38.159
Like we just have like the Lord has done that.
00:56:38.239 --> 00:56:40.880
And and I think a huge testimony is uh to you guys.
00:56:40.960 --> 00:56:42.159
I'm so super thankful.
00:56:42.880 --> 00:56:54.639
Uh as we were preparing for this and doing some weekenders and DC and meeting with other people, I had a lot of pastors' wives and church planner wives telling me that this would be the loneliest season.
00:56:54.880 --> 00:56:57.119
Um and just how to prepare for that.
00:56:57.199 --> 00:57:01.360
And I never felt that um mainly because of you all.
00:57:01.599 --> 00:57:16.639
So never felt days of loneliness and struggles, and of course there were hard days, but um never really felt like a lonely season, and just so grateful to you guys um for that, for sort of turning the tide on that and just setting a different tone here at the fields and for our family.
00:57:16.800 --> 00:57:17.679
So thankful for y'all.
00:57:17.920 --> 00:57:19.119
You had knocks.
00:57:19.760 --> 00:57:21.199
True, amen.
00:57:21.440 --> 00:57:25.920
Uh but I also think that I mean, as much as that applies to the 10 people at the table here, too.
00:57:26.079 --> 00:57:30.480
Like I mean, if you're listening to this, it's very likely you're a member of the fields.
00:57:30.719 --> 00:57:34.559
And um, and so man, it's just yeah, it's just such a sweet joy.
00:57:34.639 --> 00:57:35.599
I think we all feel that.
00:57:36.159 --> 00:57:37.119
Sweet to reflect.
00:57:37.280 --> 00:57:41.760
And the these four years have been sweet, and we're looking to the next 40 and beyond that.
00:57:42.000 --> 00:57:42.559
Amen.
00:57:43.119 --> 00:57:47.199
Well, maybe Candy King just said, Welcome.
00:57:51.119 --> 00:57:54.159
All right, eternity in the new heavens and the new earth, friends.
00:57:54.320 --> 00:57:55.360
So there is an eternity.
00:57:56.559 --> 00:57:57.119
Amen.
00:57:57.280 --> 00:57:57.599
All right.
00:57:57.679 --> 00:57:59.360
Well, hey, thank you for listening to Fields Notes.
00:57:59.440 --> 00:58:01.119
It's been a joy to us to uh put this on.
00:58:01.199 --> 00:58:03.199
We pray it's been an encouragement to you to listen.
00:58:03.280 --> 00:58:05.039
So we're signing off for Fields Notes.
00:58:05.199 --> 00:58:05.840
See ya.
00:00:06.719 --> 00:00:22.000
Welcome to this week's episode of Fields Notes, where we take a deeper dive into sermon text, discuss matters of life and faith, and enjoy conversations around the table with fellow friends from the Fields.
00:00:25.679 --> 00:00:27.760
All right, well, hey Fields Notes listeners.
00:00:27.920 --> 00:00:33.039
Welcome to a Fields Notes podcast episode that we are very excited about.
00:00:33.200 --> 00:00:36.240
This is not this is not your normal Fields Notes podcast.
00:00:36.320 --> 00:00:44.799
We actually are probably breaking some podcast rules today that sitting around me at our big table is not one or two or three people.
00:00:45.039 --> 00:00:56.000
We actually have 10 people sitting around this table because we are doing a Fields Notes podcast, in one sense, recapping the four years we've had as a Fields Church.
00:00:56.079 --> 00:01:06.000
And to do so, we actually are having our original core team, the original 10 people who kind of committed from the start to join the Fields Church with us today.
00:01:06.159 --> 00:01:11.599
So uh uh at the time of this recording, this coming Sunday is our four-year anniversary.
00:01:11.920 --> 00:01:18.959
And so we're very excited about that, and we just want to reflect on, in some sense, what it's been like since the very start.
00:01:19.120 --> 00:01:22.480
So you might know the people who are around this table, but I'm Joe House.
00:01:22.560 --> 00:01:23.599
I'm here with my wife Callie.
00:01:23.760 --> 00:01:24.719
The Stricklands are here.
00:01:24.799 --> 00:01:26.159
Yeah, we are you probably knew.
00:01:26.560 --> 00:01:31.200
The Mangleds are here, the Kings are here, and the Lions are here.
00:01:31.280 --> 00:01:45.840
And we are really excited to talk about uh our experience in a way, um, throughout our time as the Fields Church, all of the uh, in a sense, the blood and sweat and tears that have been put in that has been a joy and has been growing for us.
00:01:45.920 --> 00:01:51.280
Um and really for me, it's fun to just be around friends and family here uh in this time.
00:01:51.359 --> 00:01:52.319
So we're really excited for it.
00:01:52.400 --> 00:01:56.079
We hope it's a help to you listening of being like, man, what has the Fields Church been like for the whole time?
00:01:56.239 --> 00:02:01.760
So, what we're gonna do in one sense is kind of ask us how how do we become part of the Fields Church?
00:02:01.840 --> 00:02:03.680
And so we're actually gonna start with the Stricklands.
00:02:03.840 --> 00:02:08.800
Jeff and Steph, tell us a little bit from the very, very, very, very start.
00:02:09.840 --> 00:02:12.159
How did the Fields Church come to be?
00:02:12.479 --> 00:02:13.759
Yeah, it's a great question.
00:02:13.840 --> 00:02:16.719
I feel like probably more simpler than you would think.
00:02:16.879 --> 00:02:21.280
Um, I was obviously on staff as a pastor at Rock Point Church.
00:02:21.360 --> 00:02:26.719
Uh, we were in the summer of 2020, so that is pretty much right in the middle of COVID.
00:02:26.879 --> 00:02:37.120
Uh, really had just started gathering back on Sundays, and um, we kind of knew uh for some things our lead pastor was transitioning out of uh Rock Point.
00:02:37.199 --> 00:02:42.800
Uh probably I wasn't gonna trans uh kind of move into that lead pastor position.
00:02:42.960 --> 00:02:46.400
And so we were thinking, man, what might the Lord have next for us?
00:02:46.560 --> 00:02:49.360
Sort of open-handed, talking about some different things.
00:02:49.439 --> 00:03:08.800
00:03:08.960 --> 00:03:10.560
And uh this is not Speedway.
00:03:10.719 --> 00:03:12.159
This is not Speedway.
00:03:12.479 --> 00:03:13.680
Amen, right, Steph?
00:03:13.840 --> 00:03:14.159
Amen.
00:03:14.319 --> 00:03:14.719
Yeah.
00:03:14.960 --> 00:03:18.800
We're so thankful for Harrison Beckman and Providence Church uh that is there.
00:03:18.960 --> 00:03:20.560
Uh the Lord's doing a great thing.
00:03:20.639 --> 00:03:28.000
Uh we did not feel like Speedway is probably the best uh fit for us in that season um of ministry and life.
00:03:28.159 --> 00:03:33.520
And so I went, I asked Steph what she thought about it, and she agreed that that probably wasn't the best fit.
00:03:33.599 --> 00:03:38.080
So I had actually gone back to those guys and be was like, I just I don't think this is gonna work.
00:03:38.240 --> 00:03:41.919
And so they said, actually, we don't care where in Indianapolis.
00:03:42.080 --> 00:03:44.879
Uh we would love to back you, support you.
00:03:45.039 --> 00:03:47.599
We need more churches in the Indianapolis area.
00:03:47.759 --> 00:03:52.719
So that was essentially, I went back to Steph, and Steph and I started talking and praying and thinking.
00:03:52.879 --> 00:03:56.719
I started having a lot of conversations with pastors in the Indianapolis area.
00:03:56.960 --> 00:04:03.360
A very early form of plant indie uh kind of was beginning to come apart or come about.
00:04:03.439 --> 00:04:12.240
And so they had actually kind of strategically looked at Westfield and Bargersville, and uh we started doing some date nights to Westfield.
00:04:12.400 --> 00:04:15.840
I think immediately we're like, yeah, Westfield is the place.
00:04:15.919 --> 00:04:17.199
It's growing like crazy.
00:04:17.279 --> 00:04:19.600
There weren't that many gospel preaching churches.
00:04:19.680 --> 00:04:22.879
Uh we just loved Westfield, the community, the people.
00:04:23.040 --> 00:04:24.879
We already had some connections here.
00:04:25.040 --> 00:04:27.920
Um, so that really was kind of how things began.
00:04:28.240 --> 00:04:29.759
Steph, I don't I don't know what it was.
00:04:30.079 --> 00:04:32.720
Yeah, what's it like from Steph's perspective of this?
00:04:33.040 --> 00:04:34.720
My husband's gone crazy, isn't it?
00:04:34.959 --> 00:04:35.920
Perhaps.
00:04:36.160 --> 00:04:39.439
Uh well, Jeff has always been a big picture, big dreamer.
00:04:39.600 --> 00:04:43.920
Um, so wasn't surprised when this sort of fell into our lap.
00:04:44.240 --> 00:04:54.959
And um, as we were talking and praying about it, um, there was just a big sense of peace knowing that um Rock Point was not gonna be our forever home and that God's had something else in store for us.
00:04:55.279 --> 00:04:58.160
Um, and I never felt anxious or nervous.
00:04:58.399 --> 00:05:01.120
It was just a big sense of overwhelming peace from the Lord.
00:05:01.519 --> 00:05:12.240
And just one of the verses that kind of always stuck with me through that time of like praying and meeting people and driving through Westfield was just the word abide um from John 15.
00:05:12.319 --> 00:05:17.040
And so just really trusting in him through it all, because there was a lot of unknowns.
00:05:17.279 --> 00:05:20.240
We were leaving family, we were leaving two good jobs.
00:05:20.399 --> 00:05:22.399
I was working um as a nurse practitioner.
00:05:22.480 --> 00:05:24.399
He obviously had his job at Rock Point.
00:05:24.720 --> 00:05:28.240
Um, and so just leaving sort of the community that we had always known.
00:05:28.399 --> 00:05:37.360
Um, and so just really trusting the Lord in that and just had an overwhelming sense of peace, knowing that this is what the Lord had called us to and that he would provide.
00:05:37.439 --> 00:05:39.439
Um, and he's done that every step of the way.
00:05:39.600 --> 00:05:40.480
So it's been good.
00:05:40.800 --> 00:05:42.079
I have a follow-up question.
00:05:42.240 --> 00:05:52.079
Uh I so you guys don't know this, but I had called her before we got married uh when I was in seminary and told her we're gonna plant a church in New York, uh, NYC.
00:05:52.240 --> 00:05:55.199
And she started looking up jobs and apartments and things like that.
00:05:55.279 --> 00:05:57.839
And then like two weeks later, I called her and was like, no, we're not.
00:05:58.000 --> 00:06:00.000
Um, I don't think I'm the right guy to go there.
00:06:00.240 --> 00:06:09.839
Probably a year or two after that, or maybe longer, we uh me and another buddy, good friends uh of ours from college, uh, we were like, we're gonna plant in Ireland.
00:06:10.000 --> 00:06:15.120
Um, and so then Steph got really excited about the possibility of Ireland, came down.
00:06:15.279 --> 00:06:17.680
That was like maybe a couple months that we talked about that.
00:06:17.839 --> 00:06:18.560
That didn't happen.
00:06:18.800 --> 00:06:21.759
When did you actually believe that we were gonna plant in Westfield?
00:06:21.839 --> 00:06:26.160
Like we were gonna actually do this thing, and it wasn't just a crazy idea that I had.
00:06:27.439 --> 00:06:35.120
I think once we had driven here a couple of times for date nights, and I honestly think it was once you had figured out the roundabouts and you felt comfortable driving.
00:06:35.680 --> 00:06:37.519
Hamilton County roundabouts, they'll get you there.
00:06:37.759 --> 00:06:41.920
I was gonna say, once he felt confident with that, it was like, okay, we can do this, we can live here.
00:06:42.240 --> 00:06:46.240
Guys, I have been converted to the the wonders of the roundabout.
00:06:46.319 --> 00:06:52.720
Now, when I go to the south side of Indy and they have these four-way stops or those lights, I'm like, what are we doing?
00:06:52.879 --> 00:06:54.079
Have you heard of the roundabout?
00:06:54.800 --> 00:06:55.680
It's wonderful, it's wonderful.
00:06:55.839 --> 00:06:56.879
Well, thanks, Stricklands.
00:06:56.959 --> 00:06:59.439
Let's hear from the as the people come on the board.
00:06:59.519 --> 00:07:03.360
So, as my I have my little notes page of who the order that people have come on.
00:07:03.439 --> 00:07:06.959
Jeff, you can tell a little bit about who's first to kind of commit.
00:07:07.040 --> 00:07:08.639
Well you're like, hey, my name's Jeff.
00:07:08.720 --> 00:07:09.839
I guess I'm planning a church.
00:07:10.000 --> 00:07:11.839
Who's gonna come come with me here?
00:07:12.000 --> 00:07:14.160
Who is the first to come with?
00:07:14.240 --> 00:07:15.439
Yeah, I guess I know the answer to the first one.
00:07:15.600 --> 00:07:16.240
First to commit.
00:07:16.399 --> 00:07:16.560
Yeah.
00:07:16.720 --> 00:07:18.160
First, who is like, I'm in.
00:07:18.319 --> 00:07:21.759
I do think you should just pause the podcast for a second and guess.
00:07:22.000 --> 00:07:22.800
No, not really.
00:07:22.879 --> 00:07:23.759
Not you, Joe.
00:07:23.920 --> 00:07:26.079
If you're listening, you should pause the podcast.
00:07:26.720 --> 00:07:27.040
I had to buy.
00:07:27.199 --> 00:07:29.120
I was like, I was like, whatever you need to do, but I'll do it.
00:07:29.279 --> 00:07:29.600
I'm in.
00:07:29.680 --> 00:07:30.720
I'm in, I got it.
00:07:30.959 --> 00:07:31.600
No, no, no.
00:07:31.680 --> 00:07:39.120
If you're listening, you should pause for a second and go, who I'm just gonna talk, and then you'll have plenty of time to guess who the first, second, third, fourth, fifth, and down the road.
00:07:39.279 --> 00:07:49.279
Uh, I told our staff at Rock Point in probably late October and uh end of the day, last part of the staff I talked to, because they were doing work, which was great.
00:07:49.360 --> 00:07:53.199
Not that the other staff wasn't doing work, but they were like in rehearsals.
00:07:53.279 --> 00:07:54.480
So now you have an idea.
00:07:54.720 --> 00:08:02.560
Um I I told our staff, uh, our worship team that we were gonna be moving to plant a church in Westfield, Indiana.
00:08:02.639 --> 00:08:04.399
And then I'll let Grace take it from there.
00:08:05.360 --> 00:08:05.680
Yeah.
00:08:05.839 --> 00:08:10.319
So Jeff, yeah, shared the vision of what he and Steph were doing and where they were gonna be.
00:08:10.480 --> 00:08:18.480
And I literally followed up after Jeff told me and was like, hey, if you uh need a worship leader, I would love for you to consider me.
00:08:19.040 --> 00:08:23.360
And I think it was locked in a few, like I don't know when, after.
00:08:23.759 --> 00:08:27.040
Then, okay, then I said yes.
00:08:27.839 --> 00:08:29.920
Steph and I actually had a conversation the night before.
00:08:30.000 --> 00:08:44.879
I don't know if we told you this, but the night before we were just trying to think about people that might come with us, and or maybe a couple days before, and we were like, I mean, if Grace could come, if she she would be the perfect person to like lead music and worship at the fields.
00:08:45.039 --> 00:08:51.840
Uh so when you said that, that was the Lord just uh answering another prayer of ours, uh affirming that.
00:08:51.919 --> 00:08:58.480
So I Grace, you and Stephanie know each other from a little while back, even more so.
00:08:58.639 --> 00:09:00.320
So there's a lot of stories there.
00:09:01.279 --> 00:09:01.919
Yes.
00:09:02.799 --> 00:09:03.519
Yes, we do.
00:09:04.960 --> 00:09:07.519
Many stories of the fact Steph used to babysit.
00:09:08.000 --> 00:09:10.960
Yes, she often said that she changed my diapers.
00:09:11.200 --> 00:09:13.440
So we go way back.
00:09:14.080 --> 00:09:18.799
What's fun is on my little my little cheat sheet here of of names, Grace is the first on the on this name.
00:09:19.039 --> 00:09:21.519
Dylan is not though the second though with Grace.
00:09:21.759 --> 00:09:22.960
You guys were not married at the time.
00:09:23.039 --> 00:09:26.000
Maybe had just started dating, not dating.
00:09:26.399 --> 00:09:31.759
So when I when we was locked in that I was coming, a few months later, that's when Dylan and I started dating.
00:09:32.080 --> 00:09:35.120
Ah Dylan's like, oh, this church plant, maybe I can go there.
00:09:35.840 --> 00:09:41.919
And so on our first date, like I it wasn't shared that we that I was coming to be a part of this plant.
00:09:42.159 --> 00:09:50.399
And so we were sitting there on our way home from a restaurant in the car, and he was like, Man, I love what Jeff and Steph are doing.
00:09:50.480 --> 00:09:52.559
I've always wanted to be a part of a church plant.
00:09:52.879 --> 00:10:03.120
And in my head, I'm like, oh my goodness, if this whole dating thing works out, if this whole dating thing works out and we get married, like this is so gonna be the Lord.
00:10:03.279 --> 00:10:03.360
Wow.
00:10:03.759 --> 00:10:04.639
And here we are.
00:10:04.960 --> 00:10:05.440
Here we are.
00:10:06.240 --> 00:10:06.720
Praise the Lord.
00:10:06.799 --> 00:10:08.159
We'll hear more from Dylan later.
00:10:08.240 --> 00:10:13.919
But next on my list of people to join the Fields Church from the start, I have Ian and Holly line.
00:10:14.159 --> 00:10:15.919
So maybe I we could talk about how Jeff has been.
00:10:16.080 --> 00:10:26.639
Yeah, so early that same day when I was telling the staff I had uh I obviously Holly, that was uh our kids team was under my area of ministry at uh the fields.
00:10:26.720 --> 00:10:28.639
And so Holly and I worked together for a long time.
00:10:28.720 --> 00:10:31.519
The lines, were you always in our small group?
00:10:31.759 --> 00:10:33.759
At least from when we were at the church.
00:10:33.919 --> 00:10:37.519
I feel like you were with us from the beginning of us starting a group almost.
00:10:37.759 --> 00:10:42.320
Yeah, I mean, I think we I think we moved in slightly after you started because we were part of a different group.
00:10:42.480 --> 00:10:42.639
Right.
00:10:42.799 --> 00:10:45.919
But it was pretty, I'm pretty sure it was still when your guys' group was still pretty young.
00:10:46.240 --> 00:10:53.039
So it had to have been, and we started the group from like before like day one almost of us being so probably four or five years we had been in group together.
00:10:53.120 --> 00:11:02.480
So I had told Holly, and then I think I I told the whole kids team, but then I think I brought Holly aside and said, Hey, we'd love for you to come with us.
00:11:02.639 --> 00:11:04.320
And then I'll let you take it away.
00:11:04.639 --> 00:11:05.039
Yeah.
00:11:05.200 --> 00:11:13.279
Um and I went home that evening and I told Ian, I was like, Hey, Jeff and Steph were thinking about planting a church, maybe over in Westfield.
00:11:13.360 --> 00:11:16.480
And I think Ian's exact words were yes, let's do it.
00:11:17.039 --> 00:11:21.120
And so then we had a small group, I think, either like that night or the next day.
00:11:21.279 --> 00:11:25.519
Um, and we like told you guys when we were leaving, and yeah.
00:11:26.159 --> 00:11:34.720
I'm pretty sure I was like, if you guys need a week or so, or so you know, something like when they it was like the next we're I was like, amazing, this is incredible.
00:11:34.960 --> 00:11:42.960
Yeah, so like uh it for a couple years, like I I used to be a teacher on and off struggling with being a teacher, it's really great.
00:11:43.039 --> 00:11:48.559
And then I look for 30 jobs and I didn't get a job, and then next year is really great, and then it wasn't great, and then it's great.
00:11:48.799 --> 00:11:54.000
And uh and coming into COVID, I actually had a pretty decent year, even considering COVID.
00:11:54.159 --> 00:11:59.840
And then so I was like, okay, we're setting our roots down, we're getting a house, we're this is where we're at.
00:12:00.000 --> 00:12:02.320
We're gonna be in Crawfordsville, this is what we're doing.
00:12:02.639 --> 00:12:07.519
And then so we started looking for houses over the summer, and then that next year I thought was gonna be great.
00:12:07.679 --> 00:12:08.639
It was it was tough.
00:12:08.879 --> 00:12:11.039
The year after COVID was tough teaching.
00:12:11.200 --> 00:12:17.519
We put in an offer on a house, went through the inspection, failed at inspection, counter-offered, gave us a bed.
00:12:17.919 --> 00:12:20.159
It just everything was just falling through.
00:12:20.399 --> 00:12:25.840
And uh then Holly, you know, approached uh, you know, talk we talked about it that night, and and that's why I was so quick.
00:12:25.919 --> 00:12:32.320
It was like something couldn't be clearer than all these other doors closing and this one opening.
00:12:32.559 --> 00:12:38.480
So and I'm pretty sure we're just like, yeah, I mean, uh yeah, we'll we'll we'll pray about it, but yeah.
00:12:39.600 --> 00:12:39.840
We're good.
00:12:40.000 --> 00:12:40.879
So we'll pray too.
00:12:40.960 --> 00:12:46.000
You know, I so what's so funny is because you guys were in group, we obviously knew we were planting a little ahead of time.
00:12:46.080 --> 00:13:00.960
It I remember when you guys were like walking through that house, and I mean Steph and I are not praying you out of that house, but like we're we were certainly like when that did when that fell through, we were like, oh man, they they might come with us now, you know, like before that.
00:13:01.039 --> 00:13:04.240
So yeah, just really cool to think about different ways that the Lord worked.
00:13:04.559 --> 00:13:05.200
So cool.
00:13:05.360 --> 00:13:08.639
Next we have Doug and Kathy King.
00:13:08.720 --> 00:13:13.519
So Doug and Kathy, we're gonna be Jeff, tell us a little bit of how did the Kings come?
00:13:13.840 --> 00:13:25.200
So the Kings, so I was over discipleship at Rock Point, and uh both Doug and Kathy were heavily involved in men's and women's ministry there, leading Bible studies, doing groups, teaching classes.
00:13:25.759 --> 00:13:29.440
Maybe not the classes part yet, because we were trying to start to bring those classes in.
00:13:29.519 --> 00:13:36.639
So I feel like from day one, like they they were two of the first people I met at Rock Point, um, certainly heavily involved in the ministry there.
00:13:36.720 --> 00:13:47.679
So we just got to be really good friends, um, talked a ton, shared vision and theology and reading books and digging into all of these things.
00:13:47.759 --> 00:13:59.279
Um, and I knew when we were gonna plant, I was like, man, we need people um who are mature and solid and can disciple people and have experiences old.
00:13:59.360 --> 00:13:59.600
I'm sorry.
00:14:00.720 --> 00:14:05.279
Also, it wouldn't hurt if they weren't 25 years old.
00:14:05.600 --> 00:14:06.480
Let's be clear.
00:14:06.799 --> 00:14:11.120
Yeah, that's not that's maturity in every facet um is helpful.
00:14:11.279 --> 00:14:16.960
And so I yeah, I think it probably was uh I don't know, maybe a month or so after I talked to the staff.
00:14:17.200 --> 00:14:19.039
So it's probably November, I would guess.
00:14:19.120 --> 00:14:26.159
Uh Doug and I had a meeting that we were just supposed to have in normal sort of ministry meetings, kind of following through some things that he was doing.
00:14:26.240 --> 00:14:29.039
And at the end, I was like, hey, here's what we're gonna do.
00:14:29.200 --> 00:14:32.720
Um, and I would love for you and Kathy to consider coming.
00:14:32.799 --> 00:14:35.360
Um, and so I'll let you take it from there.
00:14:35.840 --> 00:14:41.600
Well, actually, it was December, I think it was more early December of 2020.
00:14:41.840 --> 00:14:48.240
Um, I was just coming out of Rock Point at about eight o'clock in the morning, and Jeff is not an early riser, but he was there.
00:14:48.399 --> 00:14:50.080
And he said, You've probably been there for hours.
00:14:50.559 --> 00:14:51.519
I had been there at 8 a.m.
00:14:51.840 --> 00:14:52.799
since 2 a.m.
00:14:53.440 --> 00:14:55.519
And Jeff said, See, I was there at 8 a.m.
00:14:55.679 --> 00:14:56.000
Let's go.
00:14:56.399 --> 00:14:58.320
Jeff said, I would like, I said, I need to talk to you.
00:14:58.399 --> 00:14:59.840
And I thought, what have I done now?
00:14:59.919 --> 00:15:01.039
I'm in big trouble.
00:15:01.279 --> 00:15:04.960
Uh, and he said that Steph and I have been called to plan a church.
00:15:05.039 --> 00:15:06.080
Would you and Kathy?
00:15:06.159 --> 00:15:09.919
And I remember the the exact words, would you and Kathy be the first to come?
00:15:10.399 --> 00:15:15.200
I said, and I said, Well, Jeff, I love you, but I'm not gonna come because because you called me.
00:15:15.360 --> 00:15:20.320
We have to be sure that this is both an internal and external calling from the Lord.
00:15:20.399 --> 00:15:28.080
Yeah, and so I said, We need to we need to pray on this and seek scripture for wisdom and discernment before we can commit to that.
00:15:28.320 --> 00:15:32.720
And I remember telling you, I said, Well, I'm gonna come, but I'm not selling my lake house.
00:15:32.960 --> 00:15:38.080
Yeah, well, that's our next little part of the story, and then you guys can maybe tell us fill in some gaps here.
00:15:38.159 --> 00:15:43.679
Yeah, so you guys, I I think in that meeting you were like, Well, I need to talk to Kathy about it, that sort of thing.
00:15:43.840 --> 00:15:45.200
Let's maybe get dinner together.
00:15:45.360 --> 00:15:48.320
You guys come out to the house and we'll talk through it in a little while.
00:15:48.559 --> 00:15:53.600
And so we did, we put that on the schedule, and we were coming out, and Steph's like, Do you think they're gonna come with us?
00:15:53.759 --> 00:15:55.759
And I was like, I don't know.
00:15:55.919 --> 00:16:00.639
I mean, I I I don't think so, but they're being gracious, they're being kind.
00:16:00.720 --> 00:16:01.919
Um, and so we went out there.
00:16:02.080 --> 00:16:03.519
We had not been to your neighborhood before.
00:16:03.600 --> 00:16:05.840
Well, we had been there, but we'd never seen your house, hadn't been in.
00:16:05.919 --> 00:16:07.039
Steph had not been there.
00:16:07.200 --> 00:16:13.279
Um, and so we pull in, we pull into the uh driveway, and Steph looks at me and is like, they're not gonna come.
00:16:13.440 --> 00:16:25.279
Um and then I walked into the house, and I mean, it was a beautiful house, especially, I mean, just everything that I love about houses, it was a lot of books, beautiful fireplace, high ceilings.
00:16:25.360 --> 00:16:26.000
It was incredible.
00:16:26.080 --> 00:16:27.840
And I looked at Steph and I was like, Yeah, you're right.
00:16:28.000 --> 00:16:29.360
There's no way they're coming.
00:16:29.600 --> 00:16:31.519
Um, and then I've told this story before.
00:16:31.600 --> 00:16:38.399
The entire night, you guys were just asking us questions that seemed like you had already decided that you were coming.
00:16:38.559 --> 00:16:41.360
And so finally, like, we're getting ready to have dessert.
00:16:41.440 --> 00:16:45.360
And I I told the folks earlier, like, this incredible orange pie.
00:16:45.519 --> 00:16:46.240
Tangerine pie.
00:16:46.399 --> 00:16:47.120
Tangerine pie.
00:16:47.200 --> 00:16:48.080
Yes, so good.
00:16:48.240 --> 00:16:51.600
And I was so not thinking it was gonna be good.
00:16:51.759 --> 00:16:55.120
And it was because it just sounded weird, and it was so good.
00:16:55.279 --> 00:17:00.080
Um, and I Steph leaned up and she was just like, Are they coming with us?
00:17:00.240 --> 00:17:01.919
And I was like, I don't know.
00:17:02.080 --> 00:17:03.200
It kind of seems like that.
00:17:03.279 --> 00:17:07.599
And so I think I just asked, Hey, are you guys like, are you guys coming with us?
00:17:07.759 --> 00:17:13.839
And you guys, uh, as you always are, big smiles, very uh warm.
00:17:14.160 --> 00:17:17.440
We're like, yes, uh, and and really encouraged and that sort of thing.
00:17:17.519 --> 00:17:26.319
I don't know what happened, maybe especially for you, Kathy, between me talking to Doug and then that meal, uh, what was going on in your own mind and heart?
00:17:26.640 --> 00:17:37.279
Well, we had come out of COVID, we're coming out of COVID, and all during that time, I just knew that um the trust in God, just trusting and lean into him.
00:17:38.000 --> 00:17:46.799
And so when Doug came in and said that Jeff had talked with him, they were gonna plant a church in Westfield, we were asked to join.
00:17:46.960 --> 00:17:48.000
What do you think?
00:17:48.559 --> 00:17:52.640
And I'm thinking, well, maybe this is something God wants us to do.
00:17:53.119 --> 00:18:00.400
But I have to admit that as Jeff mentioned earlier, I knew about some things that were going on at the church.
00:18:00.559 --> 00:18:04.720
Our head pastor was getting ready to move along, retire.
00:18:04.960 --> 00:18:14.799
Things were moving, and now Jeff is leaving, and I was like, Well, I really had to pray over it, and I really felt like this is the right thing for us.
00:18:14.880 --> 00:18:16.799
And so, yes, I said, yes, let's do this.
00:18:16.960 --> 00:18:28.240
Well, it was around holiday time, so we had to wait a little bit before get through the holidays before Jeff and Steph came for dinner, and so it was just really exciting when they came and we got to hear their vision.
00:18:28.559 --> 00:18:30.799
There's a bit there's a backstory, a couple of backstories.
00:18:30.880 --> 00:18:51.119
00:18:51.359 --> 00:18:54.000
Um we were ready to follow you no matter what.
00:18:54.640 --> 00:18:57.279
Uh so that was one of the backstories.
00:18:57.440 --> 00:19:08.640
The other part of this is that um we Kathy and I, from the moment that you told uh told us about, ask us about this, we began to search scripture uh and pray about this opportunity.
00:19:08.960 --> 00:19:18.400
And the one the sentinel scripture that came to heart for me was John 13, as Jesus was washing the disciples' feet.
00:19:18.559 --> 00:19:24.160
Uh, the 14th verse of that chapter, he said, Now I'm giving you the towel of grace.
00:19:24.319 --> 00:19:25.839
Now do it to somebody else.
00:19:26.319 --> 00:19:29.599
The word go kept reverberating in my soul.
00:19:29.680 --> 00:19:40.079
Yeah, and so we talked about being water walkers, getting out of the boat of comfort and be like Peter and walking on the water and trusting that God had a path for us.
00:19:40.160 --> 00:19:41.839
Yeah, that was the convincer.
00:19:42.000 --> 00:19:43.440
Yeah, so that's awesome.
00:19:43.599 --> 00:19:44.319
It's so cool to do that.
00:19:44.480 --> 00:19:45.440
Then you had the pie.
00:19:46.720 --> 00:19:47.680
I was convinced.
00:19:48.559 --> 00:19:49.440
Okay, yeah.
00:19:50.640 --> 00:19:51.359
Go for it, Kathy.
00:19:51.759 --> 00:19:57.680
Well, I was just gonna add so we came to Westfield and looked around, kind of liked what we saw.
00:19:58.160 --> 00:20:04.720
We've been here before, and um, but it had grown a lot, and it was it was kind of exciting to see the growth.
00:20:04.960 --> 00:20:09.599
Um, put our house on the market, it sold in a couple of weeks.
00:20:09.839 --> 00:20:12.079
We actually got more than we asked for.
00:20:12.480 --> 00:20:14.960
So things were really falling into place pretty quickly.
00:20:15.039 --> 00:20:18.079
So that that was a good affirmation that we were making the right move.
00:20:18.319 --> 00:20:19.200
Yeah, amen.
00:20:20.319 --> 00:20:21.839
And we are so thankful, you guys.
00:20:22.240 --> 00:20:24.079
I'm so thankful, so thankful.
00:20:24.400 --> 00:20:27.920
Next on my list of people coming is now Dylan.
00:20:28.480 --> 00:20:40.640
And so, Jeff, I don't know if you I don't know what kind of conversation you had with Dylan, but it seems like I'm putting pieces together, the Lord was putting on your heart coming to the fields before you guys even knew each other were coming, in in a sense, which I think is really cool.
00:20:40.880 --> 00:20:42.079
Maybe Dylan or Jeff.
00:20:42.400 --> 00:20:44.160
Well, I'll tell you where it first came in my mind.
00:20:44.319 --> 00:20:49.359
They they they still claim they were not on a date, but I walked out late.
00:20:49.599 --> 00:20:50.319
You saw them like that.
00:20:50.640 --> 00:20:51.440
Yeah, we walked out.
00:20:51.599 --> 00:20:52.640
I I don't think you were there.
00:20:52.720 --> 00:21:01.279
I think I called you right after you saw them, and because there was supposed to be a third person there, and they're so we were walking through Rock Point on the way out.
00:21:01.680 --> 00:21:02.160
It was Rhett.
00:21:02.720 --> 00:21:03.200
It was Rhett.
00:21:04.000 --> 00:21:17.200
Rhett wasn't there, and it was just so we were walking out of the church, and we see Grace and Dylan eating tacos, probably still then, like I think after maybe worship or before or some sort of yeah, and uh, and I was like, Huh.
00:21:17.599 --> 00:21:18.799
Seven and I both on the way out.
00:21:18.880 --> 00:21:19.680
We're like, what's going on?
00:21:19.920 --> 00:21:25.200
You know, and I was like, you know, it'd be great to come along with us, would be Dylan.
00:21:26.400 --> 00:21:28.720
Like, let's start praying that relationship.
00:21:28.880 --> 00:21:34.000
And um, and I technically maybe you guys weren't on a date, but I just that's that's what we saw.
00:21:34.400 --> 00:21:35.279
Looked like a date.
00:21:35.440 --> 00:21:35.759
Hmm.
00:21:36.000 --> 00:21:37.920
Dylan, do you scare to speak?
00:21:38.720 --> 00:21:44.319
It was not a date, uh, though I was thankful that Rhett did not join us that morning.
00:21:44.720 --> 00:21:53.359
Um but yeah, I I had recently graduated from college a little bit over a year before.
00:21:53.599 --> 00:22:03.759
And um, you know, I had always been in a large church and After college, I moved to Columbus, Ohio.
00:22:04.000 --> 00:22:05.680
Was a part of a smaller church there.
00:22:05.839 --> 00:22:06.480
Really loved it.
00:22:06.640 --> 00:22:08.559
Really loved the community that I had there.
00:22:08.799 --> 00:22:15.839
And just kind of over the course of that year, and then also in the course of that year, I lived in Alaska for a summer.
00:22:16.079 --> 00:22:19.359
So didn't get much community there because it was in the middle of COVID.
00:22:19.440 --> 00:22:20.880
There were no small groups or anything like that.
00:22:20.960 --> 00:22:23.759
The small group I had when I was in Ohio was fantastic.
00:22:24.240 --> 00:22:43.279
And just kind of over the course of that year, coming out of college, I really had a heart for church plants and just kind of what they were doing in communities and really felt uh called to be a part of a church that's in a in the community that I'm in, um, which at the time I was in Crawfordsville and going to Rock Point serving there.
00:22:43.680 --> 00:22:54.720
But when I found out that Jeff was uh wanting to to plant in Westfield, um I had previously had an internship there and loved it and really hoped to move back to that area at some point.
00:22:54.799 --> 00:22:57.519
Um and so I just felt the Lord calling me there.
00:22:57.759 --> 00:23:02.160
Um and so I actually asked Jeff, I think to, I don't remember if it was breakfast or lunch.
00:23:02.240 --> 00:23:05.599
We met at a corner restaurant that is not there anymore.
00:23:05.759 --> 00:23:12.559
And uh we got together, we ate, and I told Jeff, I'm coming whether you like it or not.
00:23:12.880 --> 00:23:19.359
Um so um I just said hey, I'd love to be your tech guy and and uh help with that.
00:23:19.519 --> 00:23:25.519
And that's pretty much the uh the story of how I I decided I was gonna be joining the Fields Church.
00:23:25.680 --> 00:23:28.559
I'm sure Jeff was very happy to for you to be coming.
00:23:28.880 --> 00:23:30.319
That's a like it situation.
00:23:30.559 --> 00:23:36.160
That was a wonderful gift based on the fact that I'm like, I think I know how to use my phone.
00:23:36.240 --> 00:23:38.880
Um, and that's about the end of my tech knowledge.
00:23:39.039 --> 00:23:39.920
So really thankful.
00:23:40.000 --> 00:23:48.960
I did say, and I think it just needs to be I as soon as they started dating, I was like, I just need you to know if this doesn't work out, we're taking grace.
00:23:49.839 --> 00:23:52.240
We love you, we think you're the best.
00:23:52.400 --> 00:23:54.720
Um but we're taking grace.
00:23:54.799 --> 00:23:58.880
Uh but we really are so thankful for both of you and thankful that it that it worked out.
00:23:58.960 --> 00:24:01.680
And yeah, yeah, you guys have been seems to be working out.
00:24:01.759 --> 00:24:05.279
Yeah, uh we've uh uh just so just say we got to officiate their wedding too.
00:24:05.759 --> 00:24:06.559
Oh yeah.
00:24:07.599 --> 00:24:10.079
All of the all of these conversations happening in the year 2020.
00:24:10.160 --> 00:24:10.720
Am I right in that?
00:24:10.799 --> 00:24:11.839
Is this twenty or maybe early 2020?
00:24:12.079 --> 00:24:13.440
Dylan's early 21, maybe.
00:24:13.599 --> 00:24:14.319
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:24:14.559 --> 00:24:18.079
Yeah, I think yeah, I think it's probably probably early 21.
00:24:18.319 --> 00:24:18.880
Late 30.
00:24:19.200 --> 00:24:19.440
Yeah.
00:24:19.680 --> 00:24:20.000
Okay.
00:24:20.160 --> 00:24:24.799
And then the the last of the core team to join on my list is the houses, which is us talking here now.
00:24:24.960 --> 00:24:29.119
So my lovely wife might talk a little bit, or maybe Jeff will talk a little bit about his thoughts on it.
00:24:29.279 --> 00:24:29.680
Maybe not.
00:24:29.759 --> 00:24:31.200
Maybe my lovely wife will talk a little bit.
00:24:31.599 --> 00:24:32.079
That's great.
00:24:32.160 --> 00:24:32.640
Yeah.
00:24:33.039 --> 00:24:37.759
So we were, uh well, I had known Jeff and Steph since I was in mid middle school, really.
00:24:38.000 --> 00:24:48.160
And um, Joe and I had recently gotten engaged, and uh, Jeff and Steph were doing our premarital counseling, and so they kind of like dropped some hints in the early days of premarital counseling.
00:24:48.240 --> 00:24:57.279
And at the time we were Joe was living in Broad Ripple, and I was still in college, and we were going to a church in Broad Ripple that literally everyone was 25 or younger.
00:24:57.440 --> 00:24:59.680
And so we just loved the community there.
00:24:59.839 --> 00:25:02.240
Similarly, like our small group was amazing.
00:25:02.319 --> 00:25:06.400
We just had so many friends in our exact season of life, and so we looked around.
00:25:06.480 --> 00:25:10.480
I mean, you called the kings old, you all seemed super, super old compared to where we were coming from.
00:25:12.880 --> 00:25:15.519
Very, super old.
00:25:16.319 --> 00:25:17.279
We do have a comment on that.
00:25:17.599 --> 00:25:20.240
But well, yeah, I'll redeem that that thought in a little bit.
00:25:20.319 --> 00:25:22.079
But initially I was just like, nah, pass.
00:25:22.480 --> 00:25:31.920
We just have so many, you know, so many people in our exact season of life here that we yeah, that we want to really stay here and put down roots maybe in Broad Ripple if anyone does that.
00:25:32.000 --> 00:25:32.559
I don't know.
00:25:32.720 --> 00:25:35.279
Um, but it was not working out for us.
00:25:35.440 --> 00:25:40.240
So I was um my second semester, my senior year, could not find anywhere to work.
00:25:40.319 --> 00:25:42.799
Um we couldn't find anywhere for us to live.
00:25:42.960 --> 00:25:47.599
We had gotten so many um rejected offers on you know, houses that we were trying to buy and things like that.
00:25:47.680 --> 00:25:49.920
And yeah, it just felt like the Lord was closing.
00:25:50.319 --> 00:25:51.119
Prayer works, guys.
00:25:51.440 --> 00:25:55.920
And I know, and then now I know why we didn't get into rejecting us, prayed us out of it.
00:25:56.160 --> 00:25:56.480
Dang.
00:25:56.880 --> 00:25:58.799
So yeah, we just couldn't find anywhere to live.
00:25:58.880 --> 00:26:00.559
It felt like every door was closing.
00:26:00.799 --> 00:26:12.319
And um then I think after maybe a pretty emotional for me uh premarital counseling session where I was just in despair about our future, um they brought up Westfield again.
00:26:12.400 --> 00:26:17.519
And so I think Joe and I maybe started to kind of started to maybe look that direction a little bit.
00:26:17.680 --> 00:26:20.240
And then we applied to teach at the high school the same night.
00:26:20.400 --> 00:26:21.119
Joe and I did.
00:26:21.359 --> 00:26:23.839
Um he got hired in 30 seconds, I'm pretty sure.
00:26:24.160 --> 00:26:29.920
And a few weeks later they came around and realized we were a package deal, so I got hired as well.
00:26:30.079 --> 00:26:37.039
And I mean, we found the most perfect apartment, like the first place we looked, and yeah, the Lord was just flinging doors open at that point.
00:26:37.119 --> 00:26:42.720
So we finally said, We'll go with the oldies and we'll go, we'll go to Westfield.
00:26:42.880 --> 00:26:44.640
And we are so thankful we did.
00:26:44.960 --> 00:26:46.400
Yeah, it's been a huge joy.
00:26:46.480 --> 00:26:49.680
I think you you said most of it there, but I think uh we it was not our plan.
00:26:49.759 --> 00:26:53.279
We're like, yeah, the suburbs are for older people, we're young, we're gonna live in the city.
00:26:53.519 --> 00:27:03.440
And um, yeah, I one time we were like on a walk, we were I was visiting you at Taylor, we were on a walk in the streets of Upland, and you're like, I just don't know if I want to live in the city, and I think our hearts are just getting softened to it.
00:27:03.519 --> 00:27:05.759
And we had enjoyed our pre-marriage counseling with you guys.
00:27:05.839 --> 00:27:07.519
Jeff and Steph, thank you for for doing that.
00:27:07.599 --> 00:27:11.359
And um, our hearts just kept on getting softened to it.
00:27:11.599 --> 00:27:18.640
Um and the Lord drew us in, and yeah, the doors opened up for us to come, and we're really thankful that we have.
00:27:19.039 --> 00:27:21.359
So that's kind of how we all have have come to be.
00:27:21.440 --> 00:27:23.039
That is the the where we are now.
00:27:23.119 --> 00:27:45.279
00:27:45.440 --> 00:27:54.960
Um so how the church has maybe been different than what we thought, and maybe we can start with perhaps the lines would it be or the kings?
00:27:55.200 --> 00:27:56.160
Let lines will start.
00:27:56.240 --> 00:28:03.680
Maybe like the maybe how the fields has been surprising or um things have been yeah, what's been surprising to you in the time?
00:28:04.000 --> 00:28:06.559
Yeah, I mean, I mean, really just how much it's grown.
00:28:06.720 --> 00:28:10.480
I mean, I'm I I don't know if anyone else is wanting to say there anything, so I'm gonna take it first.
00:28:10.720 --> 00:28:20.799
But um, I mean, it's just it incredible how much it's grown, especially like it just seems like after every summer there's always like a big August bump, and then it doesn't like disappear.
00:28:20.880 --> 00:28:29.440
Like that's like the new church, you know, every year there's always just like an abundance of people, uh, and and and you know, so so grateful for that.
00:28:29.599 --> 00:28:41.119
We started with what 40 44 something, and so now I mean it's just it's just fantastic to see you know so many new people coming in and then staying um to to be a part of it.
00:28:41.200 --> 00:28:44.640
Uh uh and just uh I mean that's hugely surprising.
00:28:44.799 --> 00:28:48.559
Um maybe also surprising not in a building yet, but that's fine.
00:28:48.799 --> 00:28:50.799
Um but that's that's all right.
00:28:51.039 --> 00:29:00.000
So I would also I would like to redeem what I said now about the old people because um I we're listening.
00:29:01.359 --> 00:29:01.920
Let's hear it.
00:29:02.000 --> 00:29:02.640
Come on, Kelly.
00:29:02.880 --> 00:29:03.039
Come on.
00:29:03.440 --> 00:29:07.039
I've been blown away just by how many young people are pouring into the suburbs.
00:29:07.119 --> 00:29:10.720
I mean, it's not all soccer moms, like the stereotypes would would have it dubbed.
00:29:10.799 --> 00:29:18.720
And um, I mean, yeah, just an abundance of really, really sweet young adult community, um, but then community really through every age.
00:29:18.880 --> 00:29:25.920
And I have just been blown away by what a blessing, what a tremendous blessing the multi-generational aspect of the fields is.
00:29:26.079 --> 00:29:40.799
Um, because man, when you go through something really, really hard, it's like I I just want to be surrounded by people who are a little further down the road, who have also walked through really hard things, who are not, you know, my age, but who are um, yeah, sometimes 40, 50 years older.
00:29:40.960 --> 00:29:48.720
And so um just been so deeply loved and poured into and so thankful for the wisdom of every single life stage that exists there.
00:29:48.799 --> 00:29:52.400
So that's been surprising and something that we are so grateful for.
00:29:52.960 --> 00:30:01.279
Well, Callie, we'll consider that a uh uh backpedaling of sorts, but especially since you have two soccer moms sitting at the table right now.
00:30:01.440 --> 00:30:02.400
Soccer moms.
00:30:04.960 --> 00:30:20.799
But but there's another element to this, and you know, Kathy and I both have talked, you know, many times about the uh the the level and depth of intimacy between the people that have gathered at the fields, young and old, cross-generational.
00:30:21.200 --> 00:30:37.359
But the other, the backstory of this, when we were at Castleview, uh we we looked around at this core group, and there were a lot of young kids, and we were the old people, and we were a little bit, we were just a little bit, you know, frustrated by that.
00:30:37.759 --> 00:30:46.480
Uh, and then it wasn't until we really got into one of the fellowship groups there, you know, the Evans and Gilligan's and whatnot, we said, okay, we can do this.
00:30:46.640 --> 00:30:49.920
Uh, and then we got to the fields, and we were still the oldest.
00:30:50.559 --> 00:31:01.839
So you want to add to that, well, yeah, but I I think for me the the the biggest difference is that I wasn't expecting it how close friendships are developing.
00:31:02.319 --> 00:31:14.400
How people have come from so many different places, different states, and we've come together, and in such a short time we've become such a close family, a church family that I've never seen before.
00:31:14.640 --> 00:31:19.200
We read about it, we studied about it with the nine nine marks church and all that.
00:31:19.359 --> 00:31:25.440
Um but here we were, we were actually doing it, and we're seeing it and we're living it right now, and that is just beautiful.
00:31:25.599 --> 00:31:26.400
I just love it.
00:31:28.079 --> 00:31:32.319
Mangles, maybe you guys things that have been surprising to you guys in in our church plane.
00:31:32.880 --> 00:31:42.480
I would just add to Kathy's because I I don't think I had really understood what how God designed the church to be until coming here.
00:31:42.559 --> 00:32:02.000
I don't know if it's like starting something from the ground up, but just walking in and seeing people and knowing who they are and knowing their story, and then being able to like I don't know, be close with someone who is in their 70s, but then also be great friends with someone who's 16.
00:32:02.559 --> 00:32:06.160
Um it's just been yeah, just very sweet.
00:32:06.799 --> 00:32:07.279
Very sweet.
00:32:08.000 --> 00:32:18.960
I think one thing for me is just how uh willing people are to serve, uh especially in just the the season that we're in as a church, being super early on.
00:32:19.039 --> 00:32:48.160
00:32:48.319 --> 00:32:50.559
Um they've become tech people because of you.
00:32:51.839 --> 00:32:57.599
Uh so it just I think just the willingness of people to serve um in so many different areas.
00:32:57.680 --> 00:33:12.559
I think there was maybe a little bit of fear on my part uh early on when it was just the ten of us that are people going to help because this is gonna burn out really quick if if we don't get um people to help serve.
00:33:12.640 --> 00:33:16.880
Um, but we've been blessed by an incredible congregation.
00:33:17.119 --> 00:33:21.599
Um and I and I think that has grown so many friendships.
00:33:21.839 --> 00:33:32.640
Um I mean as a result of it, uh when Grace and I were looking to buy a house, we moved in with a a couple for two weeks in between our lease ending and when we could move into our house.
00:33:32.880 --> 00:33:45.759
So I mean it it's just been super incredible and and that's grown uh so many friendships just in the midst of serving alongside people in really what I would consider a hard season of planting a church.
00:33:45.920 --> 00:33:52.319
Um and so it's just bred so many wonderful things through serving the Lord together.
00:33:53.200 --> 00:33:53.680
Amen.
00:33:53.839 --> 00:33:55.519
I'm curious to hear what the the Stricklands would say.
00:33:55.599 --> 00:33:57.440
I had a couple of thoughts maybe from me.
00:33:57.519 --> 00:34:04.480
Uh I I don't even know if we really could even picture what it was going to be like four years from the start.
00:34:04.559 --> 00:34:08.239
It is just like I think we're like, I guess we're just gonna start and see what happens.
00:34:08.320 --> 00:34:12.400
And um, so I think maybe need not expectations, but I think for me, I don't know if others would echo this too.
00:34:12.480 --> 00:34:17.280
I think I kind of thought the and granted, we didn't come on as on staff, we were just coming on as as members.
00:34:17.440 --> 00:34:26.639
I kind of thought, oh, the this church plant is gonna be uh something that we kind of endure in addition to our normal lives, so that we're gonna have our normal things and then also, oh, we'll also be part of this church.
00:34:26.880 --> 00:34:37.440
And really it's like this has become the the kind of the the hub of all of our community, of who we are, like our our life has been more actually centered around the church.
00:34:37.599 --> 00:34:48.559
In some ways, now we work for the church, so that maybe is uh different than some people might say, but I think for a lot of people would experience like, oh, this actually is not you know the cliche saying with not an event that we come to and leave, but a people that we belong to.
00:34:48.639 --> 00:34:50.000
Uh there's a truth to that.
00:34:50.159 --> 00:34:56.000
I know we say it a lot of times, um, but I think that has been a change in how I've viewed uh church in general.
00:34:56.159 --> 00:35:02.559
Um, and but I think especially has been true at the field church, especially I think for us uh in that so surprisingly good for us.
00:35:03.440 --> 00:35:04.400
Maybe Steph.
00:35:04.480 --> 00:35:08.239
How's it been surprising to you that that we that it's that's gone, that it's got off the ground?
00:35:08.719 --> 00:35:09.119
We're still here.
00:35:09.360 --> 00:35:10.880
So we are here, we are at speedway.
00:35:11.119 --> 00:35:21.920
We are in Westfield, and um I think we when Jeff and I were early married on and in Louisville for his master's and PhD, we had been part of a church plant down there.
00:35:22.159 --> 00:35:25.119
Um and it was a few more years down the road and so well established.
00:35:25.199 --> 00:35:26.559
So I knew what it could be.
00:35:26.719 --> 00:35:28.400
I knew what it could look like.
00:35:28.559 --> 00:35:30.079
Um and that was exciting.
00:35:30.320 --> 00:35:36.079
Um, what it was gonna take to get there and the years and the work and the literal blood, sweat, and tears.
00:35:36.159 --> 00:35:44.639
I didn't really know what all that would be, um, but I knew what it could be, um, especially just being faithful to the Lord um and just being obedient to his calling.
00:35:44.800 --> 00:35:47.199
So that was super exciting and encouraging.
00:35:47.599 --> 00:35:56.400
Um, once we started doing our I thought they were vision meetings, information meetings, what we called them, those Sunday afternoons in the cafe.
00:35:56.880 --> 00:35:57.599
Super exciting.
00:35:59.039 --> 00:36:01.119
I'll be honest, guys, they were terrible.
00:36:01.360 --> 00:36:01.920
Those were rough.
00:36:02.000 --> 00:36:02.159
Yeah.
00:36:02.400 --> 00:36:03.519
I did not enjoy them.
00:36:03.599 --> 00:36:07.440
I always walked away discouraged and worried.
00:36:07.599 --> 00:36:10.559
And I was never really worried until we had those meetings and then left.
00:36:10.639 --> 00:36:12.480
And then I got worried, and then I was fine.
00:36:13.039 --> 00:36:19.920
But once we started having true Sunday worship together, it just snowballed and kept going.
00:36:20.159 --> 00:36:23.519
And the Lord just continued to be faithful and people kept coming.
00:36:23.679 --> 00:36:25.039
And that was just what was so exciting.
00:36:25.119 --> 00:36:28.559
I'm like, people are coming and people are coming back after Sunday after Sunday.
00:36:28.719 --> 00:36:36.800
And so it was just so um exciting to see um like our worship team grow, to see our the kids grow.
00:36:37.039 --> 00:36:46.079
Um looking back, I look back at like our first like Faith's giving when it was literally like the 10 of us having Thanksgiving in our house.
00:36:46.559 --> 00:36:51.840
Um, to now we are running out of chairs at Maple Glen to even have Fieldsgiving.
00:36:51.920 --> 00:36:58.079
So it's just been overwhelmingly um just encouraging to see the Lord's goodness and faithfulness in it all.
00:36:58.400 --> 00:36:58.559
Yeah.
00:36:58.719 --> 00:36:59.280
Amen to that.
00:36:59.440 --> 00:37:12.880
I'm I mean, I think some of the things, there's so much in my mind uh thinking about this, but I do think sometimes I probably come off as a being a more of a dreamer and uh like wanting to vision and think things through and all that.
00:37:13.039 --> 00:37:16.639
I I think I probably look like I have a lot more confidence than I actually do.
00:37:16.800 --> 00:37:23.760
Um I I honestly like every day since we've begun, I I it's like pinching myself.
00:37:23.840 --> 00:37:25.119
Like I really am just shocked.
00:37:25.199 --> 00:37:31.920
I mean, I really I think I never actually thought I I mean I you guys are like, oh, thanks for letting us know that now.
00:37:32.320 --> 00:37:36.000
I just didn't, I just I don't know that I really believed it was gonna happen.
00:37:36.159 --> 00:37:36.960
I mean, I really don't.
00:37:37.119 --> 00:37:41.360
I mean, I I won one praying and hoped and that sort of thing.
00:37:41.440 --> 00:37:44.239
But I think deep down I was just, I'm like, I just don't know.
00:37:44.400 --> 00:37:53.760
Certainly during the information meeting um time, I was like, man, I just don't know um if this is gonna get off the ground and um if we can do this.
00:37:53.920 --> 00:38:04.880
And um, you know, you hear what some of you guys may know this, may not, but um, when you're going through church planting training, uh, the they just have one message and it's like you're gonna die.
00:38:05.039 --> 00:38:06.000
Like it's awful.
00:38:06.159 --> 00:38:09.119
It's sort of like don't shake the baby when you're getting your first kid.
00:38:09.280 --> 00:38:13.440
Like it's just this like it's you're just it's so hard.
00:38:13.599 --> 00:38:20.239
Like it's like opening a restaurant, like 90% of them don't make it, and you're coming out of COVID doing it.
00:38:20.400 --> 00:38:22.960
Like, it's just, and I'm like, I am not.
00:38:23.360 --> 00:38:27.599
There are guys that I know that I'm like, yeah, that dude should plant a church.
00:38:27.760 --> 00:38:30.559
Like he, like, I just I'm like, that is not me.
00:38:30.800 --> 00:38:33.760
Um, so I I just think I had a ton of doubt coming in.
00:38:33.840 --> 00:38:41.920
Uh really, I mean, I honestly looking around the table, like this, I mean, you having you guys with us was massive.
00:38:42.079 --> 00:38:43.039
I mean, massive.
00:38:43.199 --> 00:38:50.960
I think that I I'm like, I don't know if anybody would come to this church or be a part of this church, but I know with you guys sitting around the table, I think they will.
00:38:51.039 --> 00:38:53.519
Like, I really do think that will help.
00:38:53.599 --> 00:39:03.119
Um, as just the the real, genuine love for Christ, love for others, uh, giftedness, things like that, uh, was huge from the beginning.
00:39:03.280 --> 00:39:09.599
Um, and so yeah, I really do feel like it it has been it has not been easy.
00:39:09.760 --> 00:39:13.519
And um, but it has been so much better than I thought it was gonna be.
00:39:13.599 --> 00:39:20.000
And I tell people this all the time like the past four years are easily my favorite four years in ministry, and it's not even close.
00:39:20.239 --> 00:39:31.519
Um, and uh I think I'm surprised often to see like not only like I know like the friendships, the the relationships, the family that we have at this table right now, I expected that.
00:39:31.599 --> 00:39:34.960
Like, I I mean we had built some of that early on, knew that.
00:39:35.119 --> 00:39:47.280
But now to like people that are new, like that we've never known, like I had known now to see like so many, even for the first little bit of time, I'm like, well, there's still a lot of like Crawfordsville connections, some people we knew before.
00:39:47.519 --> 00:40:01.360
There's just so many people now that the Lord has brought uh to the church that are just incredible godly people to be able to get to see some people who didn't even know Jesus, come to know Christ through the church is incredible.
00:40:01.519 --> 00:40:05.440
Uh so yeah, it has been we are not a perfect church.
00:40:05.599 --> 00:40:08.960
It has not been a perfect journey, um, but it has been really sweet.
00:40:09.039 --> 00:40:14.719
And yeah, I I mean I really do think often I'm I feel like I'm pinching myself because it has just been that sweet.
00:40:15.360 --> 00:40:16.000
Praise the Lord.
00:40:16.159 --> 00:40:17.599
Well, I have one last question for us.
00:40:17.679 --> 00:40:28.880
I'm gonna if on our combining our our two last questions, but uh for us, either uh something to share from from the early days, so even in the the time at Castleview or the interest meeting days, the info meeting interest meetings.
00:40:29.440 --> 00:40:30.239
That was it was interesting.
00:40:30.320 --> 00:40:31.599
That's better than information meetings.
00:40:31.679 --> 00:40:32.000
Yeah, yeah.
00:40:32.159 --> 00:40:32.559
Interest meetings.
00:40:32.719 --> 00:40:33.599
I think we can't tell what it was.
00:40:33.920 --> 00:40:36.880
If you were there at the the info interest meetings, they were a little tough.
00:40:37.119 --> 00:40:39.440
It was a little bit of is this gonna go, I don't know.
00:40:39.760 --> 00:40:54.320
Um so maybe for us round table to share either from from those seasons or from our first couple of Sundays or things going on, uh, or something that you especially I think we've kind of shared some all the way, something that you especially has been encouraging to you about the Fields Church um over the course of these four years and that.
00:40:54.480 --> 00:40:56.159
Um anyone want to kick us off?
00:40:56.480 --> 00:40:57.280
I'll kick us off.
00:40:57.519 --> 00:40:58.159
Kick us off, Doug.
00:40:58.400 --> 00:41:00.079
I'm not I'm not shy.
00:41:00.400 --> 00:41:01.199
Oh, we know that, Doug.
00:41:01.440 --> 00:41:04.559
Kathy, Kathy and I talk about this all the time.
00:41:04.880 --> 00:41:14.400
Um we have been a member of four different churches from Stunny First Street and Rock Point, Castle View, and now the Fields, and we still have strong connections with all of those.
00:41:15.519 --> 00:41:32.159
If we hadn't answered the call uh to plant this church, there are easily 200 people that we never ever would have met, never ever would have created long-lasting intimate relationships with.
00:41:32.960 --> 00:41:45.840
None of them are sitting here at this table, but there are easily 200 people that we've become so close to that we never would have even known had we not um committed to following that calling.
00:41:46.079 --> 00:41:53.119
And for me personally, the greatest thing that I have felt like God has called me to do is to teach at Quorme Dale.
00:41:53.440 --> 00:41:59.119
That never would have happened had I not had Kathy not not made that made that commitment.
00:41:59.440 --> 00:42:15.760
So it's been such a blessing for us to know that that we can see the fruit of our labors and that God has led us because of faithful preaching and teaching and singing and all the things that we've done to be faithful to the calling, to be obedient to that calling.
00:42:16.000 --> 00:42:17.360
It's just been a blessing.
00:42:17.840 --> 00:42:18.480
Praise the Lord.
00:42:18.639 --> 00:42:20.000
It's uh it it's fun for me.
00:42:20.079 --> 00:42:26.159
I don't know if I can if I'm allowed to say this right, to tell just some Doug King stories of I feel like in the first the first the start of the.
00:42:27.280 --> 00:42:32.800
Well, we can't tell them all, but just maybe like uh everyone when we would go out and anywhere, Doug King is talking to everyone.
00:42:32.880 --> 00:42:37.360
It's like, hey, we're playing a church, like we're meeting people, the waitress of the restaurant, hey, we're playing a church here.
00:42:37.519 --> 00:42:39.199
Like, yeah, everyone that we would talk to.
00:42:39.599 --> 00:42:41.199
Michigan, Hedgeh wants you to know.
00:42:41.760 --> 00:42:44.400
Probably come to Westfield's church starting up.
00:42:44.800 --> 00:42:49.679
The best Doug King story, though, is uh uh uh, and I think a couple of us have said blood, sweat, and tears.
00:42:49.840 --> 00:43:04.400
Doug King, I think, is playing racquetball on one morning, busts his head open on the side of the wall, and whoever then comes to give him medical care, instead of you know instead of you know being a patient, Doug's like, we're planning a church in Westfield.
00:43:05.760 --> 00:43:06.880
And they showed up.
00:43:07.039 --> 00:43:09.280
They came in the king.
00:43:09.519 --> 00:43:10.159
It's amazing.
00:43:10.480 --> 00:43:15.280
Jeff tells me you don't have to bleed to a witness for the church.
00:43:15.599 --> 00:43:16.960
Doug will anyway, though.
00:43:17.760 --> 00:43:21.760
I uh I I tell people this all the time, and Doug, I think I've told you too.
00:43:21.840 --> 00:43:26.159
Uh, when anybody comes and preaches at our church, I'm like, here's what you want to do when you finish preaching.
00:43:26.320 --> 00:43:28.400
You just want to find, and I'll show them to you before.
00:43:28.480 --> 00:43:37.360
You want to find Doug King and you want to talk to him after you're preaching, because he will be the greatest encouragement to you when you feel at your absolute lowest after preaching.
00:43:37.519 --> 00:43:39.119
Um, and uh brother, you just are.
00:43:39.280 --> 00:43:46.400
I mean, uh, and I think uh just such an encouragement to um I mean that's that's in in some ways how God has wired you uh for people.
00:43:46.480 --> 00:43:48.480
And I think that's yeah, something I think about often.
00:43:48.719 --> 00:43:50.559
Well, Jeff, we have lots to be thankful for.
00:43:50.880 --> 00:43:56.559
You are a remarkable preacher, and you've led all of us to different levels of understanding of scripture.
00:43:56.880 --> 00:43:58.960
See why I go to Doug after every time I preach.
00:44:00.079 --> 00:44:03.119
Everyone else seems in here with the thing like, I mean, he's fine.
00:44:04.000 --> 00:44:06.320
But that seems a little overstated.
00:44:07.199 --> 00:44:08.480
That's why I go to Dick.
00:44:10.239 --> 00:44:11.760
Callie, thoughts from you?
00:44:12.400 --> 00:44:16.880
Yeah, I do remember um just thinking back to those interest meetings, which were tough.
00:44:16.960 --> 00:44:23.760
And we're in the middle of sunny days in the summer when we had an apartment pool, and I should have been, yeah, sunbathing.
00:44:23.920 --> 00:44:25.440
I'm here in this cafeteria.
00:44:25.760 --> 00:44:31.280
Um, I remember Aaron Stoffer like running through the door, and they had somewhere to go, so they couldn't even stay for the whole meeting.
00:44:31.360 --> 00:44:34.000
But she just looked at me and she was like, hey, we're gonna join.
00:44:34.239 --> 00:44:42.400
And I like that's like the first person I really heard from just someone who had kind of walked in off the street and uh just said, we're doing this.
00:44:42.480 --> 00:44:46.559
And I remember the excitement and thinking, oh my goodness, this might actually take off.
00:44:46.639 --> 00:44:52.079
And and just how yeah, fun that was and how much of the Lord's faithfulness was painted all over that.
00:44:52.239 --> 00:45:12.159
00:45:12.400 --> 00:45:19.360
Like there were so many sweet glimpses of God's goodness where people just stuck around and that continued to grow and continued to happen.
00:45:19.519 --> 00:45:21.920
So I it's fun to think back to that.
00:45:22.000 --> 00:45:26.960
And and I hope I can keep up some of that same zeal and excitement with every new person that walks in.
00:45:30.559 --> 00:45:38.559
Um I'm just thinking back to all the families that have come to the fields and have joined and friends and um that we didn't know before.
00:45:38.639 --> 00:45:43.440
And these past four years have been such a huge blessing to us in our marriage and our family.
00:45:43.760 --> 00:45:49.280
And um it's just so encouraging to hear how it's a blessing to others.
00:45:49.440 --> 00:46:00.960
Um, and so many times we've done membership interviews or just have people over to our house for dessert and coffee, and time and time again hear them say, We've been longing for a church like the Fields.
00:46:01.280 --> 00:46:06.960
Um, and it's just an overwhelming, like on repeat sound from so many members.
00:46:07.119 --> 00:46:09.360
Um, like we've been looking for two to three years.
00:46:09.440 --> 00:46:14.480
We've tried so many churches, we've been waiting and waiting, and we've never found a church like the Fields.
00:46:14.559 --> 00:46:32.480
And so that has just been um just such an encouragement, and um, I hope that just continues to echo uh for a long time that this is just a church that people long for um and want to be a part of because it really has just been such a huge blessing to me personally and to just our family as a whole.
00:46:37.119 --> 00:46:45.519
Um I think something that Ian and I have just always been praying for is just like community for our family and people that don't just love us, but like love our kids.
00:46:45.760 --> 00:47:01.199
Um and I think we have really experienced that at the fields, um even with some of the older community, like Jackson, our four-year-old loves Jackson just loves to sit at the table with and just tell stories.
00:47:01.360 --> 00:47:09.599
I'm not really sure what those are sometimes, but um and I think uh yeah, people just pulling our kids in to help do things.
00:47:09.760 --> 00:47:18.400
And um I think we have a ton of people that we've that have like taken our kids when we needed to go do something or Strickland's.
00:47:18.559 --> 00:47:25.840
I think we dropped our kids off at like 5 30 one morning when I needed to go to the ER and um just countless things like that.
00:47:26.000 --> 00:47:33.199
Um just people loving our kids for who they are, and um yeah, we've really cherished that.
00:47:34.320 --> 00:47:35.840
Ian, sorry, no?
00:47:36.400 --> 00:47:36.880
Mangleds?
00:47:37.119 --> 00:47:38.960
Ian Mangles, Grace.
00:47:39.599 --> 00:47:41.840
We only have three mics doing this too.
00:47:42.000 --> 00:47:45.679
It's been uh I think we're doing great, but it's been Grace.
00:47:46.079 --> 00:47:50.159
I remember at at the beginning just thinking, like, oh man, I'm so worried.
00:47:50.320 --> 00:47:51.840
Is it just gonna be me?
00:47:52.400 --> 00:47:53.519
Like for the longest time.
00:47:54.719 --> 00:47:59.039
Um, but Ashley was there, I think, right from the very first interest meeting.
00:47:59.280 --> 00:48:28.639
00:48:29.119 --> 00:48:32.559
So also a crazy number of violinists for a church plant.
00:48:32.719 --> 00:48:34.320
Oh yeah, five ones.
00:48:34.719 --> 00:48:35.599
Four or five at least.
00:48:35.920 --> 00:48:36.880
And we have a cello.
00:48:37.039 --> 00:48:37.599
And a cello.
00:48:37.840 --> 00:48:38.800
Actually, I think we have two cellos.
00:48:39.360 --> 00:48:39.840
Cellists.
00:48:39.920 --> 00:48:41.039
That's kind of unheard of.
00:48:44.320 --> 00:48:44.719
Crazy.
00:48:45.360 --> 00:48:45.679
There we go.
00:48:45.760 --> 00:48:47.599
And no trouble or starting something.
00:48:49.599 --> 00:48:53.920
Yeah, well, and I played sax in high school too, but I don't know if you want me up there.
00:48:55.039 --> 00:49:02.880
Um interesting story that I remember, um, and maybe I'm gonna put my foot in my mouth for a second time for this.
00:49:03.119 --> 00:49:11.280
Um, but during the interest meetings, uh, we were instructed to come up and uh inform everybody how we were serving.
00:49:11.440 --> 00:49:16.960
And um I decided it would be a good idea to tell everybody that I make Grace sound good.
00:49:17.199 --> 00:49:22.079
Um and I continue to do that.
00:49:23.840 --> 00:49:28.480
No, she makes herself sound good, and it's been a blessing to serve alongside her.
00:49:28.639 --> 00:49:48.800
I think that's been um probably one of the really cool things about ministry um in this season is that I get to do it with my wife, and we were newly married and learning how to um to serve alongside each other in really such a close capacity that we had never done before.
00:49:48.880 --> 00:49:54.480
We served together at Rock Point um from afar, more or less.
00:49:54.639 --> 00:50:03.360
Um, but we were having to figure out how to back a trailer together, and if you've ever backed a trailer as a couple, you you know how tense that can get.
00:50:03.920 --> 00:50:13.199
Um so it there's yeah, it's it's been really sweet getting to do ministry with my wife over the last four years, four and a half years.
00:50:13.920 --> 00:50:14.480
So sweet.
00:50:14.719 --> 00:50:15.119
So sweet.
00:50:15.199 --> 00:50:17.840
I think I just had just barely forgotten you saying that, Dylan.
00:50:17.920 --> 00:50:18.880
Now I remember it again.
00:50:20.239 --> 00:50:21.599
Ian, how about from you?
00:50:22.079 --> 00:50:27.920
Yeah, I think I mean, along with what everyone else is saying here, I think I can I think it kind of like uh uh blends in with everything.
00:50:28.079 --> 00:50:41.039
It's just the the emphasis that, and I think a lot of credit goes to Jeff and the other elders, is just the emphasis on on just intentionality with the people, especially like members.
00:50:41.199 --> 00:50:48.320
Like it's not just like all right, you showed up to this class, you sign this paper, all right, you're a member, you know, oh great, right?
00:50:48.719 --> 00:50:55.519
It's you know, are you coming to you know, if you haven't seen you in a while, you know, someone's reaching out, and you know, you're a member.
00:50:55.599 --> 00:50:58.400
Here's like 10 ways, 15 ways you can serve.
00:50:58.480 --> 00:50:59.760
And like most of you are doing it.
00:50:59.840 --> 00:51:06.320
Like, what is it like 70, 80 percent or something like that, or lots of you know, even more than that are serving.
00:51:06.719 --> 00:51:19.039
And uh it's even and I think I asked you a question or something, or or or uh you mentioned it once that like you know, if you're you know, people who are getting baptized, we also want you to be members so you're not alone.
00:51:19.199 --> 00:51:24.239
Like, like it's not like you're just getting baptized and then like, okay, yeah, it you're a member.
00:51:24.320 --> 00:51:25.920
Like, let's let's come alongside.
00:51:26.000 --> 00:51:36.320
And there's just such an intentionality to the membership, or even if you're not a member, just like just getting into your life and and how can you help?
00:51:36.400 --> 00:51:37.360
How can we help you?
00:51:37.840 --> 00:51:38.880
How can you serve the church?
00:51:38.960 --> 00:51:44.639
Because serving in the church, you know, gets you uh more involved and and loving in the church and the church loving you back.
00:51:44.880 --> 00:51:47.519
And it's just you know, credit to you, Jeff.
00:51:47.760 --> 00:51:52.000
I'm sure some of that comes from Castle View as you were like working on, you know, let's really focus.
00:51:52.079 --> 00:51:56.320
One of the main things being, you know, how can we help our members be members?
00:51:56.480 --> 00:51:58.880
What does membership mean in the church?
00:51:59.119 --> 00:52:03.599
And then the elders come alongside you, and Joe and Braden coming alongside even with that.
00:52:03.840 --> 00:52:07.679
Um, yeah, I I just I just love that um about our church.
00:52:07.920 --> 00:52:13.199
I actually remember I was when we were thinking about planting, and um I was getting ready to teach a class.
00:52:13.360 --> 00:52:36.559
00:52:36.719 --> 00:52:42.639
What this uh world needs, and he's talking about from a Christian perspective, it just needs true Christians actually living it out.
00:52:42.800 --> 00:52:56.079
Like just like if you want to see like the kingdom grow, like Christ glorified, that like the Great Commission, you just need Christians together, like like actually being real, living it out.
00:52:56.159 --> 00:53:05.199
And and I just remember thinking in that sort of time of like, man, what if we just had, and and Rock Point was such a great example of this, but I was wanting to see more of this.
00:53:05.280 --> 00:53:13.760
I'm like, what if we had a church where every member just knew that what it meant to be a member was to help other people follow Jesus?
00:53:13.920 --> 00:53:24.960
Like it was not like our main thing wasn't someone on a stage or you know, some sort of program or this by like, but but it was actually one another, like helping each other grow in a Christ.
00:53:25.039 --> 00:53:31.119
Like, what if we were just real Christians living out the Christian life together, being on mission together, those sorts of things.
00:53:31.360 --> 00:53:34.320
And that was sort of the dream in my head at that time.
00:53:34.480 --> 00:53:41.440
And now just to look, and again, man, we have ways to grow and all of us and that sort of thing, but it's just like, oh, that is what the Lord's doing.
00:53:41.599 --> 00:53:49.280
Uh, like in every single little facet, everybody I meet, it seems like on a Sunday out coming out the door, when I'm like, hey, how did you hear about the fields?
00:53:49.440 --> 00:53:51.039
Like, oh yeah, so and so.
00:53:51.280 --> 00:53:56.239
Uh I like I met them at work, I met them at the park, uh, I saw them at a baseball game.
00:53:56.400 --> 00:54:00.559
Like, I just so and so told me about like the church.
00:54:00.719 --> 00:54:02.800
And and that's right, and it's just such an encouragement to me.
00:54:02.880 --> 00:54:09.920
So I I think that's one of the things that I like just think on so often is just like, oh man, it really is kind of simple.
00:54:10.079 --> 00:54:20.719
Like, like true Christians who who love Jesus and who Jesus has saved, just doing like being the church together and and really being just trying to be faithful.
00:54:20.800 --> 00:54:24.079
Um, and to see the fruit of that has just been has been so sweet.
00:54:24.239 --> 00:54:24.480
All right.
00:54:25.039 --> 00:54:33.760
Well, hey, thank you all for taking time to be here today, but thank you all for all the time and effort you've put in over the last five years in all that you guys do to love and serve our people.
00:54:33.840 --> 00:54:37.840
And I know uh those listen there's a lot been a lot of people who've been from the early days of the fields.
00:54:37.920 --> 00:54:43.840
Um, but I think it's what uh I kind of clear to see in this is um you guys love the fields church.
00:54:43.920 --> 00:54:44.559
I'm with that too.
00:54:44.639 --> 00:54:45.679
We we we love our church.
00:54:45.760 --> 00:54:55.760
Uh we're not a perfect church by any means, and uh I think we can all echo there's been hard seasons over the last six to four years, whenever you've come on, but it's also been a joy too.
00:54:55.920 --> 00:55:02.800
And um, the Christian life is both joy and sorrow and hardship and rejoicing all at the same time in that.
00:55:02.960 --> 00:55:05.519
And I think part of that has just come out tonight in this.
00:55:05.599 --> 00:55:09.119
So if you've made it through this podcast, this is the longest one.
00:55:09.599 --> 00:55:10.400
How long are we, Jeff?
00:55:10.639 --> 00:55:11.920
We are under an under an hour.
00:55:12.000 --> 00:55:12.159
Okay.
00:55:12.320 --> 00:55:12.719
Under an hour.
00:55:13.119 --> 00:55:13.519
Great.
00:55:13.760 --> 00:55:15.599
Um, Jeff, any closing thoughts for us?
00:55:15.840 --> 00:55:25.039
Yeah, I think just really briefly, I mean, I I we probably actually this is like one of the first times we've actually done this uh in quite a while, just to get sort of the original 10 together.
00:55:25.119 --> 00:55:28.239
And some of that is uh like I sometimes feel guilty about that.
00:55:28.320 --> 00:55:30.320
I'm like, oh man, we should do this more often.
00:55:30.480 --> 00:55:32.960
Um I probably don't thank you guys enough.
00:55:33.039 --> 00:55:39.679
Uh just as like I look back and thinking about man, it was crazy in some sense for Steph and I to jump.
00:55:39.840 --> 00:55:42.159
It was so much crazier for you to jump behind us.
00:55:42.320 --> 00:55:51.440
Uh so like uh I mean, at least in some ways, I, you know, had this is what I did, like this is my career and some of those sorts of things, and um had some vision.
00:55:51.599 --> 00:55:54.880
I'm like, oh man, it it still amazes me every day.
00:55:54.960 --> 00:56:01.360
Uh I thank God daily that uh you guys jumped with us, that the Lord called you to do so.
00:56:01.440 --> 00:56:06.159
Uh and it's been, I I honestly, I mean, I I mean this from the depths.
00:56:06.239 --> 00:56:08.400
Like, and I think this is so clear.
00:56:08.559 --> 00:56:19.519
Like the Fields Church is is in no way like my church, in the sense of like, I like I look around and I'm like, man, you guys have shaped the fields every bit as much as I have.
00:56:19.679 --> 00:56:23.679
Obviously, it's the Lord's church him doing that, but just that's across the board in our church.
00:56:23.840 --> 00:56:31.280
Like, I take I think it's really crazy to be four years in, and I plan on going nowhere if the Lord gives me uh a lot of years here.
00:56:31.440 --> 00:56:35.599
Um, but I'm like, man, you you could take us out of the equation and our church would be fine.
00:56:35.760 --> 00:56:38.159
Like we just have like the Lord has done that.
00:56:38.239 --> 00:56:40.880
And and I think a huge testimony is uh to you guys.
00:56:40.960 --> 00:56:42.159
I'm so super thankful.
00:56:42.880 --> 00:56:54.639
Uh as we were preparing for this and doing some weekenders and DC and meeting with other people, I had a lot of pastors' wives and church planner wives telling me that this would be the loneliest season.
00:56:54.880 --> 00:56:57.119
Um and just how to prepare for that.
00:56:57.199 --> 00:57:01.360
And I never felt that um mainly because of you all.
00:57:01.599 --> 00:57:16.639
So never felt days of loneliness and struggles, and of course there were hard days, but um never really felt like a lonely season, and just so grateful to you guys um for that, for sort of turning the tide on that and just setting a different tone here at the fields and for our family.
00:57:16.800 --> 00:57:17.679
So thankful for y'all.
00:57:17.920 --> 00:57:19.119
You had knocks.
00:57:19.760 --> 00:57:21.199
True, amen.
00:57:21.440 --> 00:57:25.920
Uh but I also think that I mean, as much as that applies to the 10 people at the table here, too.
00:57:26.079 --> 00:57:30.480
Like I mean, if you're listening to this, it's very likely you're a member of the fields.
00:57:30.719 --> 00:57:34.559
And um, and so man, it's just yeah, it's just such a sweet joy.
00:57:34.639 --> 00:57:35.599
I think we all feel that.
00:57:36.159 --> 00:57:37.119
Sweet to reflect.
00:57:37.280 --> 00:57:41.760
And the these four years have been sweet, and we're looking to the next 40 and beyond that.
00:57:42.000 --> 00:57:42.559
Amen.
00:57:43.119 --> 00:57:47.199
Well, maybe Candy King just said, Welcome.
00:57:51.119 --> 00:57:54.159
All right, eternity in the new heavens and the new earth, friends.
00:57:54.320 --> 00:57:55.360
So there is an eternity.
00:57:56.559 --> 00:57:57.119
Amen.
00:57:57.280 --> 00:57:57.599
All right.
00:57:57.679 --> 00:57:59.360
Well, hey, thank you for listening to Fields Notes.
00:57:59.440 --> 00:58:01.119
It's been a joy to us to uh put this on.
00:58:01.199 --> 00:58:03.199
We pray it's been an encouragement to you to listen.
00:58:03.280 --> 00:58:05.039
So we're signing off for Fields Notes.
00:58:05.199 --> 00:58:05.840
See ya.
