00:00:13
Speaker 2: Oh by the way i don't know if it was just early season tim ryan but he's on fire now he was on fire last night he was amazing.
00:00:26
Speaker 3: And we're going to play this. Are we playing this in? I got to see if.
00:00:29
Speaker 2: We're playing this at 1130 or if we're doing this at a little bit later on in the show. Doing this at the end of the show. Did you see last night where they were on set? I've talked about this a million times. When you're up in the booth, when you're in the radio booth and it's the fourth quarter. Tim Ryan's got smelling salts sitting there and you have no choice. So he passes them along to everybody. There's probably like five or six, seven people in there engineer. And, and I'm not sure what Holder does, but then there, you know, a guy is in there and Tim is in there and, and Babs is in there with stats and maybe Bob Sargent, the, the head honcho of everything. So there's a, there's a handful of people in there and Tim will, will pass smelling salts back. And, when he threw it when he passed them to me he gives me this look like i will kill you if you don't do this so it's you know the ammonia smelling salts and you're like oh man and so you know most most people do them in the boot just because tim will kill you if you don't and um it was mcafee jason kelsey i think there was uh marcus spears was on that set and i guess he had he had passed down or given those guys smelling salts and they said well here's to tim ryan and and mcafee and uh and kelsey did them i don't think anybody else on the booth did but They said, shout out Tim Ryan, and then they did the smelling salts.
00:01:57
Speaker 3: Did you see that?
00:01:59
Speaker 2: I did see that, and, you know, I'm a short guy because he will flatten you if you don't.
00:02:03
Speaker 3: Yeah, he just looks at you, and you're like.
00:02:05
Speaker 4: All right.
00:02:05
Speaker 2: Yeah, I guess we have some really good stuff. Yeah, I guess we have that in Last Call today. I was thinking if we had it in Random Sound, but we don't. Random Sound, we got a little bit of Dan Quinn. We've got some special teams issues. Jim Mora, it is an anniversary of this.
00:02:23
Speaker 3: Maybe not the one you think it is.
00:02:25
Speaker 2: Rays are going to the World Series, and Junior Caminero of the Rays making a little bit of fun of LeBron, or maybe it was, I don't know. You make up your mind, so we'll do that in just a few minutes. Very simply, we've got your poll question out today, and it is a really, really good one. Let me read it again for you. The 49ers won ugly. What kind of fan are you this morning?
00:02:45
Speaker 5: The optimist.
00:02:46
Speaker 2: Ugly wins still count. The warrior, that's what I would be. These problems will catch up with us eventually. I'm worried about Mike Evans' Achilles. The GM, make a trade. We need help now, especially at wide receiver. Or the defibrillator, get those paddles out. Or you said it better than I do. It's not get those paddles out.
00:03:04
Speaker 3: What was the one? How did you say it?
00:03:07
Speaker 2: Comes with paddles. Comes with paddles. Would you like some early returns, by the way? Yes, I would like some early returns. What is the early returns? What are people feeling like this morning? Surprisingly, the optimist is leading right now.
00:03:16
Speaker 6: 38%.
00:03:17
Speaker 2: A win is a win, even if it's ugly. This is the idea that it's hard to win in the NFL. And so you take it. Sometimes, you know, even the good teams don't look great, but they won. 35% right behind them is the GM. Make some trades. We need some help. 25% is the warrior. The injuries will catch up.
00:03:33
Speaker 3: And with.
00:03:34
Speaker 2: 3% of the vote, the defibrillator comes with paddles. I'm hoping people know what that is. Come on, man.
00:03:43
Speaker 5: Yeah, anyway.
00:03:46
Speaker 2: These are the other ones we were debating. The fantasy fan greatly won, but did McCaffrey score?
00:03:50
Speaker 3: Yeah, he scored twice.
00:03:51
Speaker 2: We've already gotten a call today, the remote thrower. I love that we got the call from Tom and Tracy because he combined it. I think he was the drinker, the remote thrower, the yeller. My neighbors know every time the 49ers screw up. The Monday morning QB, the therapist dream, the Shanahan hater, the drinker. You can combine any of these that you would like as well. So, again, hit us up, 415-808-KMB, or 415-888-5627. Just so you know how we're dealing with things today, Tim's water stopped in the middle of a shower, and it was at the worst time. You were in the soapy element.
00:04:24
Speaker 3: Of the shower, correct? And then they just decided to turn your water off.
00:04:27
Speaker 2: I need to talk to, uh, our resident, uh, plumber, Mr. E on our YouTube chat. If you could use some help, because, uh, that was not fun this morning, but the coffee did help.
00:04:36
Speaker 3: And we're, uh, we're good to go.
00:04:37
Speaker 2: Things are good.
00:04:38
Speaker 3: Okay. So no, bro.
00:04:42
Speaker 2: I am the worrier, by the way, I am optimistic. It's not that I'm not, it's just the Mike Evans thing is throwing me now. And then somebody texted in earlier and this is not my fault, even though I'm being blamed for it at a really high level on the, um, on the text line, I simply read a text in 5-0 that said, don't forget Dre Greenlaw snapped his Achilles in the Super Bowl.
00:05:02
Speaker 3: And I'm like, oh, that's right, because I've been talking about.
00:05:04
Speaker 2: Durant's Achilles and Clay's and et cetera down the line and George Kittle's, but that's right, the Dre Greenlaw one. So anyway, we're not going to speak that into existence. We're going to manifest positive right now. We're not going to speak that into existence. So what kind of fan are you? How are you feeling this morning? By the way, a little bit off in this segment, only because I just had a friend text me that eloped and got married. And one of those guys that never been married in his life, in his 40s, anti-marriage, anti-marriage, anti-marriage. And I literally just got this text on my phone of this dude like next to the– and I thought it was a joke. I thought it was like an AI thing. I'm like, yeah, nice AI. And he's like, no, serious. So I don't know if I believe it or not, but it's kind of shaking me a little bit. You know that friend of yours that was never going to get married? And he's like 40-something years old. He's like, yeah, just decided. I'm like, what do you mean you just decided? I mean, no, you knew anybody. So anyway, that's kind of throwing me for a quick, quick, weird thing. Uh, nine one six says no Evans, no Superbowls.
00:06:03
Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly. A hundred percent. That's how I feel. Nine one six. I just feel like he's that important.
00:06:08
Speaker 2: And normally what we do is we look at quarterbacks and we go, okay, like when we do polls, when we do big polls, we'll take somebody out.
00:06:15
Speaker 3: Like the other day we did greatest single.
00:06:18
Speaker 2: I don't remember why we did it, but it was, uh, Oh, it was because it was the anniversary of the Travis Ishikawa home run that sent the Giants of the World Series in 2014. And so what we did is we said, other than the catch, the greatest single moment, greatest single play in Bay Area sports history, but we knew that the catch would win it. Dwight Clark, there's no doubt. That's number one, and everything else is number two. We'll take Brock Purdy out of certain discussions. If we did an MVP of the team, we'd say other than Brock Purdy just because the quarterback has an innate advantage. The MVP in the NFL this year will be a quarterback. I know Ken Walker III is having a great year. He'll be offensive player of the year. But a quarterback is always the MVP. So you have to take out Brock. But after seeing what happened last night, how Washington completely changed their defense and said, we're going to blitz three quarters of the time. And they blitz at a really high rate anyway. They're second in the league coming in. But they totally changed their thought. It's like, okay, well, now that he doesn't have his favorite guy. I mean, they had 303 yards of offense in the first half. They had 72 in the second half.
00:07:21
Speaker 3: What changed?
00:07:22
Speaker 7: Hmm.
00:07:24
Speaker 3: Five was out of the game. I mean, it really was that simple.
00:07:26
Speaker 2: And they just decided we're not fearful of any of these wide receivers. We're just going to bring it. We're going to make Brock make quick decisions. We don't think that there's, you know, it's crazy, man. So anyway, there's your thought. 925 Stribling is going to be the next Mike Evans.
00:07:41
Speaker 3: That's fine.
00:07:41
Speaker 2: But he's still probably, I don't.
00:07:45
Speaker 3: Know, they said week, you know, they said like 10 weeks.
00:07:47
Speaker 2: So he's not a factor right now that he's going to have to catch up to everybody. So I get what you're saying. He might be able to help in the playoffs a little bit. I tell you all the time, rookies are dart throws to me.
00:07:55
Speaker 3: I don't count on them.
00:07:56
Speaker 2: 408, Achilles' Last Stand, great Led Zeppelin song, 100%. Do we have Achilles' Last Stand? Because maybe we could play that as an ode to Mike Evans. We can dig that up.
00:08:09
Speaker 3: That'd be amazing.
00:08:09
Speaker 2: I've heard of that band. 707 says, admit it, Tim, you popped your top after the water stopped.
00:08:17
Speaker 3: I could see you just in that moment, but you told me you kind of just laugh, like whatever. You worked all day yesterday.
00:08:24
Speaker 2: I was really more about getting here on time. I was just sitting there going, yeah, are you kidding me?
00:08:30
Speaker 3: It's one of those things where it's just like, whatever. All right. 408, just coming back to last segment, yes, DoorDash, beer, wine, and spirits.
00:08:39
Speaker 5: Okay.
00:08:39
Speaker 2: I think with those, you have to go to the door. It's kind of tough for me to go to the door. Hey, let me go to the door and find that. But anyway, as far as the GM, there are a lot of people who, by the way, are on our poll question are being the GM today. GM Calvin Ridley for a fourth yeah that wouldn't be bad I don't mind Calvin Ridley I don't know what he you know I have to look at what he's doing this year I'm not paying attention to them but uh yeah I mean that's that's that's the kind of receiver they would probably look at I don't I don't think Calvin Ridley's are the fourth I think that they could get something like that the only thing I'm saying is that things may have it may have changed you know like yesterday I'm pounding the table as much as I pound the table And I'm saying, well, look at this Buckner thing.
00:09:19
Speaker 3: He wants out.
00:09:20
Speaker 2: He's clearly screaming, please come get me, you know, to the 49ers. I'm sure he'd love to come back here. He's a West Coast guy. Went to Oregon, grew up in Hawaii. I could see him wanting to come back to the West Coast. So there you go. So I could see Buckner screaming and yelling. Seattle doesn't need defensive tackles.
00:09:37
Speaker 3: Who else?
00:09:38
Speaker 2: The Rams have a defensive line if and when they get healthy. So I don't necessarily think that the Chargers are out of it. So Buckner's screaming for the 49ers to come get him, and I'm thinking, yeah, let's do that, and let's have him go get Kahlil Mack, and now all of a sudden, looking at Mike Evans as he went down to get that ball, and it just kind of limped into the locker room, tried to stretch himself out, and now being reminded by the 5-0 about Drake. Greenline, his Achilles, now I'm like, they probably got to go get a receiver.
00:10:04
Speaker 3: I mean, at least for insurance. My thought has changed.
00:10:08
Speaker 2: I still really think they need a defensive lineman, and you could be telling me I'm crazy today because of the way that they're defensive linemen. Look, that's two games in a row. I looked at the Seattle game and went, okay, do it again. And then they did against Washington. Now I'm sitting here going, do it again. Like, I'm just, I'm a little nervous about the defense.
00:10:25
Speaker 3: I mean, the offense.
00:10:27
Speaker 2: Last night, if we look at the two entities last night, and I look at the offense, and I've said this a million times, what Brock did in the second half versus first, what the offensive production was, point production was from first to second half.
00:10:38
Speaker 3: I mean, just night and day. Those final three possessions, seven total yards. So yeah, offense, there's no doubt. And the defense did step up at the end. But don't forget, in the.
00:10:48
Speaker 2: Second half, jayden daniels basically did what he wanted so while i would i would lean more if you're going to play a blame game to the second half i would lean more to the offense being inept and things changing because of mike evans but defensively they gave up a lot of yards and points and had real opportunities if malik mustafa doesn't make the third and the fourth down play which he did and then they don't you know the last possession that the commanders have wasn't really serious they had a that a uh Penalty on that possession. The last real possession where Malik Mustafa made the third down stop and, more importantly, the fourth down tip away on Traylon Burks.
00:11:23
Speaker 3: Those are hell of a plays.
00:11:24
Speaker 2: But in between that, there were some things where they were kind of going up and down the field a little bit. So I still think they could use a veteran on defense, and I still, now I'm switching to they definitely need somebody on.
00:11:36
Speaker 3: The offensive side. So you can hit me up.
00:11:37
Speaker 5: 415-888-KMBR, 415-888-5627.
00:11:42
Speaker 2: All right, let's get you some sound coming up next. Random sound. Dan Quinn said he knew it was fourth down. I'm not so sure, my friend. Little issues on special teams. We'll get into that as well. We have a history maker today. You don't want to miss this one as well. Rays are going to the World Series, and Junior Caminero did a little LeBron James impersonation. I'll ask you what you thought of it. Let's do that coming up next, only here on the Sports Leader.
00:12:18
Speaker 1: We are your home for all things red and gold. This is Fair and Biased with John Lund on The Sports Leader.
00:12:31
Speaker 2: Random sound coming up right now, and then you'll get a lot smarter about the game. I've been blabbing about it all morning, but Todd Husak actually played the game, and he's going to join us in about 12 minutes, about 50, 5-0 past the hour. You do not want to miss that. I've just been sitting here watching Steve Young take a victory.
00:12:48
Speaker 3: Lap during the break.
00:12:49
Speaker 5: 10-0.
00:12:50
Speaker 3: 10-0 as guest speaker. Guest picker.
00:12:55
Speaker 2: That's unreal, by the way.
00:12:56
Speaker 1: 10-0.
00:12:57
Speaker 5: It is.
00:12:58
Speaker 3: It's not easy.
00:12:59
Speaker 2: You know, even if it's not the spread, going 10-0 is not easy. There was a lot of tough college games to choose from last week.
00:13:08
Speaker 7: 10-0, man.
00:13:10
Speaker 2: He's got to start his own service. We need him as that. We've had betters on the show before.
00:13:15
Speaker 3: Hey, you've got to call me right now. It's Thursday. Hey, you've got a free one coming up right now and then Monday, and I'll give you the start.
00:13:21
Speaker 2: And if I don't get it right, you'll get all my games the rest of the season for free.
00:13:26
Speaker 3: Imagine Steve doing that.
00:13:28
Speaker 2: Well, let's take a step even further back going 10 and 0 this last weekend. This was the most carnage in college football you might ever see ever in one weekend. And so Steve going 10 and 0, that's like going 100 and 0. I ride with my guy, Steve. I will buy his picks.
00:13:45
Speaker 5: I would.
00:13:46
Speaker 3: Here's it, by the way, just real quick.
00:13:47
Speaker 2: I know we have sound to do, but he got Utah over Colorado, got UCLA over Wisconsin, Michigan over Penn State. Kentucky over Oklahoma. Houston over Oklahoma State. I forgot who LSU played. That was an easier one, but still not easy.
00:14:04
Speaker 3: Let's see.
00:14:06
Speaker 2: He got Tennessee over Alabama. Ohio State over Indiana. And, of course, he was going to take BYU over Notre Dame.
00:14:13
Speaker 3: So, pretty good. Pretty good by Steve. 10-0.
00:14:18
Speaker 2: So, whoever– I think– is Dirty Work having him on this week? I thought somebody was having him on this week.
00:14:22
Speaker 3: Yeah, he'll be on this week.
00:14:23
Speaker 2: That's where Dirty Work, correct.
00:14:25
Speaker 4: Yeah.
00:14:25
Speaker 3: I mean, they've got to talk to him about that.
00:14:27
Speaker 2: The odds are astronomical to go 10-0, especially BYU over, I mean, just wow. You knew he was going to take that, but it was awesome. But yeah, so then he was on, so he was on Saturday on the show. I watched him, and then he was on McAfee this morning taking a victory lap.
00:14:44
Speaker 3: So it was really cool. And he kind of was shy away from it, but yeah.
00:14:48
Speaker 2: I mean, I know that's not part of, you know, Steve's persona, but I don't know, man. Those tout services, they're making a lot of money. I could see Steve joining our show every Friday. Steve, who do you like this week? Tell you what, if I don't get it right, then you get the rest of my picks all year long for free.
00:15:02
Speaker 3: That's right.
00:15:02
Speaker 2: It's on a recorded line. And, you know, it'd be like, you know, Steve Young, 800-888-888. You know, just all eights. You know, you could call it crazy eights, or I don't know what you could call it. But anyway, I'll be his agent.
00:15:14
Speaker 3: I'll get him going. Make a ton of money. He's fine. He doesn't need to do that.
00:15:19
Speaker 5: But still, 10-0.
00:15:20
Speaker 3: Very nice. Alright, let's get to something about random sound. Here is Dan Quinn.
00:15:24
Speaker 2: Everybody's talking about this today. That he didn't know it was fourth down. I don't think he knew it was fourth down. Because if the team knew it was fourth down, then why did Jaden Daniels throw the ball into the 18th row.
00:15:36
Speaker 3: On fourth down? Because you never do that.
00:15:37
Speaker 2: Anyway, here's Dan Quinn after the game swearing that he knew that play in the first half where they could have just kicked a field goal there. Was the He knew it was fourth down.
00:15:48
Speaker 3: That's what he says.
00:15:55
Speaker 7: No, I definitely knew it was fourth down. We were going for it, and I was– I think whatever you're referring to, I was probably saying, like, with the illegal shift, there's not a penalty to go for a field goal. Like, it doesn't go– like, it's the turn on downs. Like, I think somebody had asked me.
00:16:10
Speaker 3: Yeah, it doesn't make any sense.
00:16:11
Speaker 5: Yeah, right.
00:16:11
Speaker 3: Because there was.
00:16:12
Speaker 2: There was an illegal shift, but he knows– all the 49ers have to do, especially after, like I said, Jaden Daniels threw it into the 18th row. So he didn't know it was four down or else he wouldn't have thrown it that way. And he probably got that from Dan Quinn or whomever was the, you know, call and plays their offensive coordinator, David Blau. He was calling, he was the offensive coordinator and he was calling the plays. I think as a sideline, they didn't know because in a legal shift, Dan Quinn knows that they're just, it was, it was four down. They're just going to decline that and they're going to get the ball.
00:16:40
Speaker 3: What do you think? They're going to take that and give you another chance, kick a field goal or something. I, I don't know. That dude's weird.
00:16:46
Speaker 2: I don't know what Washington's doing. I don't care what Washington's doing. By the way, did you see Bob Myers when they, it was a touchdown, a field goal, something like that. I think it was a touchdown, and Bob Myers is up there because he's a consultant for Washington.
00:16:57
Speaker 3: He's up there high-fiving with Josh Harris, their owner. It's like, come on, bro. What are you doing? Get out of that booth. Anyway, nah, that's cool.
00:17:04
Speaker 2: Number two, special teams issues. I know we got into a little bit of good, bad, and the other good bit, I wanted to talk about it. So Here are back-to-back special teams issues for the 49ers, and then let's discuss, shall we? Here's the punt, a spiral going left to right, sending Cowan backpedaling down to the four-yard line.
00:17:20
Speaker 3: He dropped it.
00:17:21
Speaker 2: He picks it up, steps into the end zone, and then gets tackled at the four-yard line.
00:17:25
Speaker 6: Yeah, that is a mental error right there for Jacob Cowan. You've got to put your heels on the 10 and maybe a yard or two of a little buffer zone. I think he was at about the five or the six when he tried to field that and then didn't field it cleanly.
00:17:40
Speaker 2: It hit the ground.
00:17:41
Speaker 3: Boy, lucky that didn't end up worse than it did. Pinero's extra point is up.
00:17:46
Speaker 4: No.
00:17:47
Speaker 6: No, he missed it to the right. He pushed it out to the right.
00:17:50
Speaker 1: Oh, Eddie has, you know, he had the perfect year last year with the field goals.
00:17:54
Speaker 2: He missed some extra points, and now he has missed three extra points this year.
00:18:00
Speaker 3: Please, no.
00:18:01
Speaker 2: Do we have to go through this again? Is he going to be another Jake Moody? Somebody texted me earlier and said Eddie Moody, which is not Eddie Money. It's Eddie Pinheiro plus Jake Moody. I don't want to be in a bad mood. And as far as Jacob Cowling is concerned, going back to the Super Bowl again, that was the play. That fumble against Kansas City was the play. There were many of them.
00:18:20
Speaker 3: I get that.
00:18:21
Speaker 2: I know we've gone through all of them many, many times. But that was the one to me. I said this yesterday on the show. If they don't give the game to Washington, they can't win. They were 0-1 in turnovers because they had the McCaffrey fumble, which reminded me again of the Super Bowl on the first drive. Sorry to keep bringing this up. And then, you know, this is two weeks in a row for Cowan. You drop the one that allowed Seattle to get their first touchdown last week. He gets you inside the five-yard line, drops a punt. One of my favorite football terms, muff the punt inside the five-yard line. Like, how long is this going to last? Like, this dude, go back to office space. What would you say you do here? They put him in the game yesterday to be a wide receiver, didn't catch a pass. They have him back there returning punts. He's muffing punts, dropping punts in Seattle, muffing punts there to get you at the four-yard line. I know they're running out of wide receivers, so maybe nobody else can do it on the roster. At least just fair catch and catch the ball. I mean, Debo's gone and et cetera, et cetera. So I guess he's the last man standing when it comes to punt returns, but this has got to stop, man. And I know Kyle hates special teams and just wants to focus on offense, and you've got Raheem Morris working on the defense, but come on, bro. The kicker's got to make simple extra points. We would be– all we could talk about today if they had lost 24-23 was the extra point. Thank God we don't have to do that because weren't you thinking that during the game? Like Washington's going to go down. If Mustafa doesn't make that play at the goal line, Washington's going to go down. They're going to kick an extra point. Can the offense do anything? Washington's blitzing their ass off.
00:19:48
Speaker 3: Can they do anything?
00:19:48
Speaker 2: Can they go down and get a field goal? I don't know if they could have. I told you the last three possessions for the 49ers, and I know it's a win.
00:19:54
Speaker 6: It's a win. It's a win.
00:19:55
Speaker 3: I don't want to be negative. Seven yards in the last three possessions, three, three and outs. I don't know if they could have scored.
00:20:02
Speaker 2: So thank goodness that they didn't have to face that situation because They missed an extra point. It's all we'd be talking about today. They lose 24-23.
00:20:09
Speaker 3: Your reactions.
00:20:11
Speaker 2: All right, that's number two on the random sound today. Here's number three. 30 years ago today. Now, this one gets lost. This one gets lost because of playoffs. This is not playoffs. All right, don't get confused here. And I miss when coaches do this. I wish more coaches would do it. I miss when managers do it. Lee Elia and Hal McRae and Tommy Lasorda and all those guys who went absolutely bonkers and we cut it on video and it was awesome. Lou Piniella, you just don't see it anymore. Because guys don't go crazy because we have a replay system. Coaches don't generally go crazy because we have a replay system. So they don't do this anymore. And I guess they don't want to become a meme post-game because a lot of coaches just stay under control no matter how pissed they are. But 30 years ago today, not playoffs, but diddly-poo. Happy 30-year anniversary to diddly-poo.
00:21:01
Speaker 4: Well, what happened was that second game, we got our ass kicked. The second half, we just got our ass totally kicked. We couldn't do diddly-poo offensively. We couldn't make a first down. We couldn't run the ball. We didn't try to run the ball. We couldn't complete a pass.
00:21:17
Speaker 1: We sucked.
00:21:18
Speaker 4: The second half, we sucked. We couldn't stop the run. Every time they got the ball and went down and got points, we got our ass totally kicked in the second half. That's what it boiled down to. It was a horseshit performance in the second half.
00:21:29
Speaker 5: Horseshit.
00:21:30
Speaker 4: I'm totally embarrassed and totally ashamed. Coaching did a horrible job. The players did a horrible job. We got our ass kicked in that second half. It sucked.
00:21:40
Speaker 5: It stunk.
00:21:43
Speaker 3: You know what? Now that I hear that again, controversial thought. I think that's better than playoffs.
00:21:49
Speaker 1: Playoffs?
00:21:51
Speaker 3: I mean, Diddley Poo, he went off. No coaches do that anymore.
00:21:54
Speaker 4: Diddley Poo offensively.
00:21:58
Speaker 3: Diddley Poo's underrated. I think it might be better than playoffs. I don't know, man. Why don't coaches do that anymore? How come coaches just don't go off sometimes?
00:22:08
Speaker 2: You know, after, you know, like Kyle last night, very calm, cool, calculated.
00:22:13
Speaker 3: I mean, he didn't need to go off.
00:22:14
Speaker 5: They're 6-0.
00:22:14
Speaker 3: He's not going to go off.
00:22:16
Speaker 2: But, you know, when a team plays just horribly and gets their doors blown off.
00:22:20
Speaker 3: Why doesn't a coach do that?
00:22:21
Speaker 2: Didn't we play Dennis Green like a week ago.
00:22:23
Speaker 3: Wasn't that? Like the 20th or 25th anniversary of that one? Crown their ass! Like we played that the other day.
00:22:30
Speaker 2: Bears are who we thought they were.
00:22:31
Speaker 3: Coaches don't do that anymore.
00:22:33
Speaker 5: Yeah.
00:22:33
Speaker 2: I mean, that was like 20 or 25. I think it was the 20-year anniversary of that one.
00:22:37
Speaker 4: We couldn't do diddly-poo offensively.
00:22:40
Speaker 2: 30th anniversary of diddly-poo? Like coaches used to go off. You know, they work all day. They work all night. They sleep on a cot. They're pissed, you know. They're hopped up on coffee and greenies, you know, back in the day. There's no energy drinks back then, so they're just in a pissy mood. And then, you know, they're prepared. They think they're going to play well, and then they just get it handed to them. They go to the loose game, and they're going off. You got to ask Kyle about that. We got to play that for him, and we got to ask him. Like, somebody's got to ask him. Like, how come coaches don't go off anymore? I'm sure Mike Shanahan went off sometimes. You know, Gruden went off sometimes. I think coaches don't do that anymore. Anybody got a logical reason for that? 415-808-KNBR. I think people don't want to be a part of social media.
00:23:23
Speaker 3: This is my logic. It's flawed often.
00:23:26
Speaker 2: But I think that what happens is that coaches don't want to be on social media. It's going to last forever. Dumb shows like this are going to play it 30 years later. Here's the 30-year anniversary of diddly-poo. Here's the 20-year anniversary of we crown their ass. Here's the 30, 20-year anniversary of playoffs. We play it forever.
00:23:46
Speaker 3: Maybe that's it. We couldn't run the ball.
00:23:48
Speaker 4: We didn't try to run the ball. We couldn't complete a pass.
00:23:51
Speaker 1: We sucked.
00:23:56
Speaker 3: Bring that back. Bring that back.
00:23:58
Speaker 2: You know, rather than finding coaches for that, give them extra money for that. Like if you go off after a game and you make one of those that turns into, you know, we're playing it 20 years later, you get more money.
00:24:09
Speaker 3: All right, let's skip.
00:24:11
Speaker 2: Number four, Tim, but let's play number five just because this is great. So this is Junior Caminero last night of Tampa. They're going to the World Series. They're going to take on Milwaukee. And Junior Caminero, I don't know if he's making fun of LeBron or it's an ode to LeBron, but you're going to hear LeBron.
00:24:28
Speaker 3: You know this.
00:24:28
Speaker 2: I'm sorry to bring back the pain. You're going to hear LeBron first, and then you're going to hear Junior Caminero, who did this last night after Tampa secured their spot in the World Series.
00:24:37
Speaker 5: Cleveland! This is for you!
00:24:37
Speaker 7: Oh!
00:24:38
Speaker 5: Tampa!
00:24:39
Speaker 1: This is for you!
00:24:39
Speaker 5: Come on now!
00:24:41
Speaker 1: Come on!
00:24:45
Speaker 2: Let's go!
00:24:53
Speaker 3: That was awesome.
00:24:54
Speaker 2: People are reminding me, yeah, like Singletary, we want winners. How come people don't do that anymore?
00:24:59
Speaker 3: We want winners, you know?
00:25:02
Speaker 5: Come on.
00:25:02
Speaker 3: We need more of that.
00:25:04
Speaker 2: The NFL should give coaches more money to do that. We're not going to fine you. We're actually going to pay you to go off on a rant that will last for 20 years, 30 years, whatever, on social media.
00:25:14
Speaker 3: Please do that. I think by slamming the table. Did I knock us out?
00:25:17
Speaker 5: All right.
00:25:18
Speaker 2: You're going to get smarter about last night's game. Todd Husak is going to join us. Of course, he was on pre- and post-game yesterday. Let's ask Todd what he thinks. Great first half, bad second half. Mike Evans, Achilles, how worried is he? Or is it just, hey, 6-0, keep rocking. Let's talk to Todd Husak.
00:25:34
Speaker 6: Todd, Todd, Todd.
00:25:36
Speaker 3: We'll talk to Todd Husak about it next when we're here on the Esports Theater.
00:25:46
Speaker 1: Fair and Biased comes to you live from the KNBR Casino Matrix Jackpot Studios. Casino Matrix. Progressive jackpots are here. Where are you? Just drop in. 1-800-GAMBLER.

00:26:15
Speaker 2: Thanks for joining us, Fair and Bias. We are here for your entertainment pleasure and a little bit of sports, 10 a.m.

Speaker 2: Of our favorite people, Todd Husak, who joins us courtesy of the.
00:26:29
Speaker 3: OMA guest line.
00:26:30
Speaker 2: We're talking about the 49ers 23-17 win. We appreciate Todd hanging out because he was there late at Levi's Stadium. And oh, by the way, what, tonight, tomorrow, and Thursday on Sports Phone, is that correct?
00:26:44
Speaker 5: That's right. I'm cheap. I'm cheap.
00:26:47
Speaker 6: Nice.
00:26:47
Speaker 5: They can do it, and I jump right in. Let's go.
00:26:52
Speaker 3: That's a prerequisite here. Yeah, totally.
00:26:57
Speaker 5: But you know what? I'm passionate. I'm passionate and cheap. And let's get some people to call in and text, and we'll have a great time talking 49ers and all things Bay Area sports. So I'm looking forward to it.
00:27:10
Speaker 3: Very cool, man.
00:27:11
Speaker 5: Yeah, absolutely.
00:27:12
Speaker 2: No, the– It's an interesting– it'll be fun for you tonight just because this is an interesting one because, as you well know, and I tuned in and was watching you at Cokes last night and I heard Krug and everybody, you know, you feel great about the first half. You feel great about 6-0. They had, what, 303 yards of offense in the first half. Everybody's doing great. They had 72 in the second half. Their last three possessions, all three and outs, they had seven total yards. So what's your view about last night? Do you feel great about the first half and being 6-0, or do you feel like, oh, my gosh– Mike Evans is on a wonky Achilles and what's going to happen. How do you, how do you, how do you digest last night's win?
00:27:49
Speaker 5: But I think the, the thing that we started the post game show with last night, winning in the NFL is very hard. And that seems kind of elementary and people are like, ah, we get it. And it's hard. And there's even the bad teams are dangerous and you catch a team on the right week or the wrong week and you don't play your best. And, The 49ers, a lot went wrong in that second half. Injuries and penalties and just not playing smart football. And they were very close to losing that game. But they did not. They won it, and they're 6-0. Now, I think they're going to look at that second half and try to analyze, well, how did we not move the ball for one first down in that fourth quarter? And I think as Mike Evans goes out, then you– you're really relying on young wide receivers who are not as, or not even young, you got Brandon cooks, but inexperienced wide receivers in that system. And I think the spacing was off. The timing was off. Brock Purdy was certainly not in sync with them. And there were a couple of plays where you could see it like Jordan Watkins is he cut that route off short, which got in the way of two other receivers and threw off the timing and the spacing for Christian McCaffrey over the middle. And so how do they spend this week preparing? At a certain point, it's like, hey, Jordan Watkins and Jacob Cowan, you either have it or you don't. You've got to figure it out right now. This is your opportunity. They only attempted three passes to other wide receivers other than Mike Evans. And there was two to Brandon Cooks and one to Jordan Watkins. And so they're just not getting enough out of the wide receiver position, which is understandable because of all the injuries. But I think what you have to prepare for is another Brock Purdy to Christian McCaffrey, Brock Purdy to George Kittle and Juszczyk being involved. And then you hope that the wide receiver position can come up with a big play or two. But I think that's where the second half got away from them. It's just wide receivers that don't understand and don't have enough experience in the offense to make it as effective. After those first two drives, we're like, we're going to score 100 points. This is going to be amazing. And then it went sideways pretty quickly once Mike Evans went out.
00:30:14
Speaker 2: It's great talking with Todd Husek. Of course, our 49ers analyst played a great quarterback at Stanford and in the NFL as well. It is KMBR AM and FM San Francisco, the sports leader, Cumulus Media Station. Thanks for hanging out with us on a Tuesday after the 49ers 23-17 win. And obviously they changed in the second half for that very reason. They're number two in blitz rate anyway. They don't blitz quite as much as Minnesota, but their defensive coordinator is a disciple of Brian Flores. So in the second half, I think exactly like you said, Evans had three for 94 in the first half. He leaves, and as you pointed out, only two catches for 35 yards for the receivers in the second half. They just said, you know what, we're going to bring the house, and Brock Purdy's going to have to make quick decisions with people he's not really familiar with, and we'll make sure we shade it to Kittle, and then we'll play cloud on McCaffrey and just come up and hit him.
00:31:02
Speaker 3: And it was difficult to do. I mean, is it as.
00:31:04
Speaker 2: Simplistic as saying because Mike left, they changed their game plan, they start bringing the blitz, and Brock wasn't comfortable?
00:31:11
Speaker 3: Well, if Atlanta sees that, Atlanta's going to do the same exact thing, aren't they?
00:31:15
Speaker 2: Even with a guy like Christian Kirk, who you just pointed this out, Brandon Cooks knows what he's doing, but not in this system. Kirk's been around a little bit longer, but he hasn't played with Purdy. He's been down since training camp. Do you think Atlanta's just going to do the same thing, like bring the house and see if Brock Purdy can make quick decisions to unfamiliar targets?
00:31:35
Speaker 6: I would.
00:31:36
Speaker 5: Brock Purdy can make quick decisions, but if the receivers don't have the right timing and spacing and reads, it makes it Really tough. And I think what we saw, which was really interesting last night, was Christian McCaffrey used more in the slot with Kalon Black in the backfield to really take advantage of, all right, let's see, Christian McCaffrey is one of the better, not just running backs, he's a really good wide receiver. He can separate and get that quickness in the slot. If you get a run by people on the outside and high point it, like Mike Evans, no. But he's an effective weapon in the slot. But without that X wide receiver who can take off either the top, get those safeties deeper. It's going to be a challenge and Brandon cooks maybe can be that guy. But I think without that piece, the challenge is up to Kyle Shanahan. How are you going? Are you going to attack this Falcons defense where you can expect to see a lot of what you saw in the second half with pressure and And really pressure up the middle to try to disrupt Brock Purdy and his timing and not allow him to throw those quick passes to Christian McCaffrey over the middle. And so they need some wide receivers to step up. And maybe it's time to make a move on the trade where you bring Juwan Jennings back. Do you look like... a trade in that to bring somebody in over the next few weeks. Now, I think as receivers come back over the last two months of the season, I think you can expect to see a more effective 49ers offense, but the next three weeks could be a challenge. We'll see what the analysis is with Mike Evans injury, but if he's out for an extended period of time, I think you can, it's going to be a tougher road with that. That would be the top five wide receivers for, for the 49ers to start training camp that are out, which is amazing, but they're still going to, they got to figure out a way to make it work. So is it more George Kittle? Is it more Christian McCaffrey? And can they run the ball effectively? By the way, the defense, the offense struggled in that fourth quarter. The defense stepped up and now Mustafa made two huge plays back to back. And that's what great teams do. Like I think, All right, the offense isn't moving the ball. Defense needs to step up and make some plays, and that's exactly what they did in the fourth quarter.
00:34:07
Speaker 3: Yeah, they really did.
00:34:08
Speaker 2: Todd Husek joining us, of course, our 49ers analyst, former NFL and Stanford quarterback here on the Sports Leader. Thanks for hanging out with us. The 49ers get the 23-17 win, and we're talking about it. Yeah, Mustafa on that third down with a run stop, then gets on Traylon Burks for that fourth down. And, you know, that was the whole story of last night is I know that Jaden Daniels had a great second half, but like you said, when it needed to happen, You know, you had Height in on that final sack. You had Jalen Duggar was the leading tackler. You had Mustafa making those two plays and others during the game as well. Grayson Holton had another sack last night.
00:34:43
Speaker 3: How has this happened?
00:34:45
Speaker 2: I mean, is it just, hey, Chris Kucerec's that good or Raheem Morris has put him in this position? But to have multiple guys step up in these kind of plays, and they did the same thing last week in Seattle, these young guys, Obviously, there's some elixir that Raheem Morris is putting.
00:35:01
Speaker 3: Players play, coaches coach. I get it. But he's really putting them in the right spots.
00:35:05
Speaker 5: I think it is fascinating because the personnel isn't drastically different than last year. The guys that are back are playing at a much higher level. And to hear some of those young guys talk about what Raheem Morris has done, he is coaching me up to play with my full level of confidence. I do. Malik Mustafa is playing as downhill of a safety as I've ever seen. I mean, that guy sees the ball and runs full speed through the ball carrier every time. And you can only do that when you're prepared and you understand what the offense is trying to do. And you're not, he's not dancing around. Oh, are they going to go deep?
00:35:44
Speaker 4: Nope.
00:35:44
Speaker 5: He knows exactly what they're trying to do. And he goes to find the ball and runs through ball carriers and runs I think you've seen it from certainly the veterans like Warner and Greenlaw when he's playing. But Jayden Duggar coming on and some of those young defensive linemen and some of the new defensive linemen like Osa Digizua. And the entire defense is working together as an 11-man unit. And they're rotating guys. We saw it a few times last night where it's a full ice hockey shift change where There's four guys coming on and four guys going off on third down, and they're still on the same page getting to the ball. The secondary is playing super aggressive, and we've seen it with Renato Green a week ago in Seattle and last night with Jaden Duggar, and these guys are recognizing and reading and flying to the ball, and it's fun to watch. It really is because you see a group that enjoys playing together, and it's not just The defensive unit, like one of the things I've loved the last couple weeks is those post-game press conferences where it's Fred Warner talking about Trent Williams and Trent Williams talking about George Kittle and Kittle talking about some of the young guys. And there seems to be a good vibe with this team right now. And I think that comes from the top down. And Shanahan has these guys rolling. And Raheem Morris– uh, gosh, you can't say enough about what he's done with this defensive unit that is playing super. What's amazing is oftentimes you see super aggressive defenses. They don't give up big plays because they over pursue or, you know, you get, you give up one-on-one coverage and give up the big play. They're not doing that. They're playing super aggressive and not giving up the big play. Uh, and that's, I think it's fun to watch these young guys grow up and some of the veterans, uh, play at such a high level and really help these guys become the best players they can be.
00:37:51
Speaker 2: And hopefully Nick Bosa returns very soon to help that defense because that's the the part I'm most amazed at is that after getting 20 sacks without Nick last year to have the type of pressure they don't always get there but they had four sacks including the key one at the end to stop Daniels it's just, they're, they're getting there so much down there. And if they're not getting there, they're at least putting pressure again. And I know some of that is obviously pressure packages and things like that, but for them to be doing what they're doing and they really haven't had Nick Bosa, that's been the most amazing part to me. Cause I thought, okay, they may be able to stop the run, but they're not going to need any pressure on the quarterback. And that's been far from the truth that that defensive line, that young defensive line, they're doing a lot.
00:38:29
Speaker 3: They're getting to the quarterback.
00:38:31
Speaker 5: And that's, again, the interesting part is it, They have Grayson Holton and Osa Digizua, but it's not a ton of new pieces. They didn't spend a great amount of money to bring in top-end pass rushers. These are young players or new players who are just winning. They're winning one-on-one. They're beating the guy in front of them. We saw it last year when the 49ers got beaten badly by the Seahawks the last two weeks of the season. Obviously, they won the playoff game against Philly, but the last two losses against the Seattle Seahawks, Seattle just beat them up front one-on-one matchups. That's what the 49ers are doing to teams right now. They're winning one-on-one matchups where, Hey, we can just bring four or maybe we bring five and loop some guys around, but we're going to trust Grayson Halton and Osa and Romello height and guys just win. And they are, doing that and getting in the quarterback's face. And we saw it last night. Even when Jane Daniels wasn't sacked, he was pressured and had to throw with a guy in his face and move out of the pocket. And even a couple times when he did scramble, boy, Jane Duggar and Fred Warner closed quickly. And it looked like, oh, that might be seven yards. Nope, that was one yard. They're faking it. They can close, and he starts chopping his feet, and I'm going to slide rather than try to take one of these guys on. And that's a confident defense that knows what they're doing and knows where everybody's going to be. And that's, I think, what's fun to watch about this Raheem Morris-led team, this Raheem Morris-led defense, where they're all on the same page. And it's much like the offense. When that offense is clicking those first two drives, they were unstoppable. It was awesome. It was so fun to watch because the spacing and the timing and the protection and the run game and everything works in lockstep. And they had that going on the defensive side when they needed it last night.
00:40:35
Speaker 2: Todd Husek is joining us, of course, our 49ers analyst, former Stanford and NFL quarterback joining us here on the Sports Leader. As far as Mike Evans, I was thinking this this morning, just as Kyle kind of gave some hints towards it, but I don't think he's going to play next week in Atlanta.
00:40:48
Speaker 3: I think he needs a week off.
00:40:49
Speaker 2: Then they've got a bye week, and then he wouldn't have to play until November 8th against the Raiders. Not that they would give away a game, but they've built themselves a little bit of a lead in the NFC West. Do you think we're going to see Mike next week, or would you think that with the bye week right after that, that Mike would get basically an 18-day break?
00:41:05
Speaker 5: One thing I've learned about Mike Evans, I did not know this about him. That is one of the toughest dudes in the NFL. To play with broken ribs the way he did last week against Seattle and then again last night That guy's tough. And I think that is what has been different with this year's 49er team is there is a sense of urgency with this veteran group. Mike Evans wants to win a championship, and Trent Williams wants to win a championship. I mean, everybody obviously does, but these guys who have been through it recognize that this team is special. And I've got to imagine when those guys get together, right– There's a veteran group of guys like, hey, when I was a rookie, I would play dominoes with some of the guys. But those veteran guys would go off by themselves and do their own thing. These guys recognize when they talk to one another, this is special. We got a chance to win a championship this year and maybe do it in pretty good fashion. And so I wouldn't be surprised if Mike Evans figures out a way to come back. Now, if he does, take it off. boy, he's earned it because he has been the difference maker in a huge game against the Seahawks. And then even that first half last night without him, clearly the team is different. And so that guy plays a lot of guts and his broken ribs and still going over the middle and making those high point catches where he knows he's going to get hit hard by safety or linebacker. I did not realize, you know, you watch that guy play for so long in the NFL and He has big numbers, but you're not sure until you see him play for your team. And, man, he's special. And I think that's one of the best off-season pickups in the entire NFL is bringing Mike Evans. So if he cannot play, number one, he's got to be really hurting. And number two, he has earned it. And hopefully the 49ers have enough in the tank to get past an Atlanta team and then go into Miami.
00:43:09
Speaker 2: No doubt. Todd Husek is going to be on tonight on SportsFan, or excuse me, on SportsPhone. So tonight, Wednesday, and Thursday, make sure you are there and you can actually talk to a real person who knows NFL football because he played NFL football. So that makes a huge difference. I'm just some guy yapping my gums. Going to be great to hear from you. I'm looking forward to it. We'll hear you tonight.
00:43:31
Speaker 5: Thanks, brother.
00:43:31
Speaker 3: I appreciate you.
00:43:32
Speaker 5: Hey, my pleasure. Thanks for having me on.
00:43:35
Speaker 3: You got it.
00:43:36
Speaker 2: That is the great Todd Husek again tonight, tomorrow, and Thursday. He will be on Sports Phone 7 o'clock. So if you've got real NFL questions, ask Todd Husek. All right, Nooner coming up next. More on the 49ers, more on Mike Evans, and a little bit on Malik Mustafa, who, by the way, I've got a bone to pick with people. Not you, but some other people when it comes to him. So we'll do that as part of the Nooner. We'll do it next, only here on the Esports Leader.
Speaker 1: Fair and biased comes to you live from the knbr casino matrix jackpot studios casino matrix progressive jackpots are here where are you just drop in 1-800-GAMBLER.

00:26:14
Speaker 3: I'm a child.
00:26:15
Speaker 2: Thanks for joining us, Fair and Bias. We are here for your entertainment pleasure and a little bit of sports, 10 a.m.

Speaker 3: To 2 p.m. weekdays. John Lund, Tim Webb, and one.
00:26:24
