00:00:06.110 --> 00:00:06.320
Bondi.
00:00:06.740 --> 00:00:12.410
Welcome to exploring Tim Este, the podcast that talks about Southeast Asia's best kept travel secret.
00:00:12.710 --> 00:00:17.660
I'm your host Jte, and I'll share firsthand insights, expert interviews and practical travel tips.
00:00:17.960 --> 00:00:22.309
Whether you're a traveler, a cultural lover, or just curious about places rarely covered in the mainstream.
00:00:22.519 --> 00:00:23.480
You're in the right place.
00:00:23.570 --> 00:00:24.800
Let's explore two more.
00:00:24.800 --> 00:00:25.219
Less day.
00:00:31.867 --> 00:00:36.847
Today's episode is one of the largest and least populated municipalities in Timor-Leste.
00:00:37.237 --> 00:00:38.677
This is Mana Tutu.
00:00:38.978 --> 00:00:50.857
So Tutu lies between Dili and Bacao, so it's to the east of Dili, and a lot of people will travel the coastal road, far fewer people will venture in land into mantu.
00:00:50.857 --> 00:00:56.137
There's not a lot of roads but it is quite a varied and interesting municipality to visit.
00:00:56.378 --> 00:01:01.438
And anybody who's visiting Baal or heading out to Jao Island and em will head through Mantu.
00:01:01.648 --> 00:01:08.188
And I would recommend that they do spend a little bit of time at least exploring MOU two Town and some of the sites along the coastal road.
00:01:08.438 --> 00:01:10.328
Which is one of the best roads in the country.
00:01:10.328 --> 00:01:15.487
It's relatively recently built and very few potholes in comparison with other parts of the country.
00:01:15.941 --> 00:01:19.661
One of the best known sites along that coastal road is$1 Beach.
00:01:19.850 --> 00:01:22.161
This was a popular spot with UN peacekeepers.
00:01:22.161 --> 00:01:29.661
During the early two thousands, locals would charge'em a dollar to access the beach, which is how it got the name entry is now free.
00:01:29.840 --> 00:01:33.350
But unfortunately, the site is generally closed from the road.
00:01:33.350 --> 00:01:39.460
There's quite a large perimeter wall, and there's these towers that look a bit like guard towers, but are actually kind of scenic spots.
00:01:39.641 --> 00:01:48.641
So if you can find a local, they may be able to open the gate and let you in, but more likely you may have to access it from walking along the coast from either end, which is a bit of a shame.
00:01:48.950 --> 00:01:50.600
The facilities are a bit run down.
00:01:50.600 --> 00:02:04.536
Obviously some money was spent on it at some point in the past, but maintenance is not a strength in Timor, there is good snorkeling there though, and it is a bit of a landmark as you are driving along and worth a quick stop to take a look at one of the more kind of unusual beach setups that I've seen.
00:02:05.036 --> 00:02:12.890
Now when you're heading along the road from Dali to Baal probably the most scenic section is sba, which is also known as Snake Road.
00:02:13.100 --> 00:02:17.721
And this is where the road wiggles like a snake around the side of the hillside.
00:02:17.721 --> 00:02:19.640
It's very impressive looking back onto it.
00:02:19.691 --> 00:02:22.230
And there are some quite prominent headlands that stick out.
00:02:22.471 --> 00:02:30.050
And it's probably the only road in Timor I found that actually had an area to the side where you could pull over and take photos and have a look.
00:02:30.050 --> 00:02:36.181
Generally you just have to pull over to the side of the road, but here, there's actually a space at the top of the saddle which offers some fantastic views.
00:02:36.681 --> 00:02:44.431
Now just before you get to the Snake road, if you're heading from Dili, take a lookout on your left for a Jao class patrol vessel.
00:02:44.580 --> 00:02:46.860
This is one of the vessels in the Timorese Navy.
00:02:46.890 --> 00:02:50.760
Certainly as of early 2025, it was being refitted there.
00:02:50.860 --> 00:02:52.270
It may be there for some time.
00:02:52.360 --> 00:02:58.121
It's not very obvious when you're driving from dilly to Bal, but when you are driving the opposite direction, you can't miss it.
00:02:58.121 --> 00:03:01.411
And that's just quite a cool thing to look out for by the side of the road.
00:03:01.911 --> 00:03:04.911
So that was just before Snake Road, just after Snake Road.
00:03:05.061 --> 00:03:11.781
There's a small roadside shrine dedicated to San Anthony Fed with natural spring water, which is a popular stopping point.
00:03:11.991 --> 00:03:15.270
There's quite a few places to get food and supplies around that area.
00:03:15.600 --> 00:03:17.341
That's also the way you wanna start.
00:03:17.341 --> 00:03:26.050
If you wanna hike up towards Mount Curry, which is a fantastic if reasonably challenging day hike, I'd recommend that get a guide to help you on the way up.
00:03:26.050 --> 00:03:28.330
'cause it's not entirely obvious where to go.
00:03:28.550 --> 00:03:30.531
But that offers some incredible views.
00:03:30.580 --> 00:03:31.265
If you're into hiking.
00:03:31.816 --> 00:03:34.756
Now the main town in Manito is called Manito.
00:03:34.945 --> 00:03:39.415
It's slightly off the main road, so if you're just driving through to Bakar, you could easily miss it.
00:03:39.686 --> 00:03:44.515
I would strongly recommend that you take a short detour and spend an hour or two exploring the town.
00:03:44.515 --> 00:03:46.705
There's actually quite a few things worth seeing.
00:03:46.975 --> 00:03:47.876
Now there are two.
00:03:48.230 --> 00:03:49.700
Hills in Manito.
00:03:49.980 --> 00:03:55.540
The most popular one has a statue of San Antonio, and that's to the east of town.
00:03:55.781 --> 00:03:59.151
The road up to that is rough but manageable.
00:03:59.320 --> 00:04:01.991
And that is a popular place for people to go and pray.
00:04:02.140 --> 00:04:05.381
And it also offers some excellent views of the surrounding area.
00:04:05.881 --> 00:04:18.480
My preference is the other hill, which is more to the west, and that is topped by a former Portuguese colonial administrator's house, which is completely run down, it's fallen apart.
00:04:18.480 --> 00:04:19.560
It's basically ruins.
00:04:19.591 --> 00:04:22.531
It's got atmospheric ruins though, and it has some incredible views.
00:04:22.740 --> 00:04:27.701
And just round the corner from it is a manmade cave shrine with a statue of the Virgin Mary.
00:04:27.880 --> 00:04:34.350
Now, the road up to there, I'm not sure you'd do it in the car very easily, but on a motorbike it is manageable.
00:04:34.511 --> 00:04:37.961
It's a pretty challenging bit of road, but it's worth it for the fantastic views.
00:04:38.461 --> 00:04:47.261
Now, in Manito town itself, there's a couple of plazas and memorials to timor's heroes from the Indonesian occupation era.
00:04:47.471 --> 00:04:50.891
And then the sizeable sent Anthony Church lies close to the waterfront.
00:04:51.071 --> 00:04:56.891
The original church was built in 1880, but the current one was renovated in 2009.
00:04:57.141 --> 00:05:00.771
And I think it needs a bit more renovation now, but it is an interesting church to visit.
00:05:00.771 --> 00:05:03.730
And if you look around the outside of the church, there are 14.
00:05:03.956 --> 00:05:08.826
Stations of the cross in the grounds along with another shrine to the Virgin Mary.
00:05:09.096 --> 00:05:12.875
So there's a few things to see in Manito Town itself when you're heading east out.
00:05:12.906 --> 00:05:15.216
Manito, there are a couple of sort fields.
00:05:15.216 --> 00:05:23.286
These are the largest salt fields in the country, and depending on what time of year you come, if it's during the wet season, they may be filled up with water.
00:05:23.446 --> 00:05:25.485
If it's in the dry season, they might be dry.
00:05:25.485 --> 00:05:32.235
There's a happy medium where you get these beautiful white and red colored kind of pools of water depending on what time of year you visit.
00:05:32.735 --> 00:05:40.665
Probably the best known site in Manito is the Lia Church which is often proclaimed as one of the most beautiful churches in Timor Lester.
00:05:40.915 --> 00:05:42.956
This is just a short detail off the main road.
00:05:42.956 --> 00:05:45.505
Just make sure you turn left as you head through town.
00:05:45.805 --> 00:05:49.975
This is a Portuguese design church built in 1933.
00:05:50.161 --> 00:05:52.201
It's this pastoral pink color on the outside.
00:05:52.201 --> 00:05:53.161
It's very attractive.
00:05:53.370 --> 00:05:57.630
And then the interior is very colorful with green and yellow striped ceiling.
00:05:57.630 --> 00:06:00.841
It is definitely one of the nicer churches I've visited in the country.
00:06:01.341 --> 00:06:06.831
Now for most people, that's what you're gonna see in Manito, is you're gonna go along the coastal road and those are the main sites to visit.
00:06:07.141 --> 00:06:14.670
For those who are a bit more adventurous and have got suitable four wheel drive vehicle or a comfortable on a motorbike, you can head inland.
00:06:14.800 --> 00:06:16.781
The main town's inland is lubar.
00:06:16.815 --> 00:06:20.985
Is in beautiful surroundings, lots of mountainous hills around.
00:06:21.225 --> 00:06:25.605
It's got a quite impressive church and some more remains from the Portuguese era as well.
00:06:25.605 --> 00:06:28.185
It's a bit out the way, but it's quite an interesting place to visit.
00:06:28.185 --> 00:06:30.665
I did it as part of a big hike in that region.
00:06:30.915 --> 00:06:38.406
This is one of the few places I didn't visit in Timor Este, but if you do head from Manito inland quite away inland, you get to at Dara.
00:06:38.586 --> 00:06:42.665
So this is one of the most important sacred sites within Timor Este.
00:06:43.165 --> 00:06:49.555
So in the early 20th century the Virgin Mary appeared to several women near a large Banyan tree on the hills.
00:06:49.706 --> 00:06:51.355
This is near uh, SIA.
00:06:51.656 --> 00:07:01.581
And as a result, a shrine, which was consecrated as a national shrine in 2004 a church, a convent, a college, and a town were built during Portuguese times.
00:07:01.831 --> 00:07:06.360
Every October hundreds of people travel on pilgrimage from around the country to visit the shrine.
00:07:06.661 --> 00:07:31.651
And although the vision of the Virgin Mary is not officially endorsed by the Catholic church, its significance to the people of Timor-Leste was acknowledged by Po John Paul II in May, 2002 in his message on the occasion of the Declaration of Independence, this is when Timor-Leste became an independent country and he made reference to it in his blessing of the country so the site is, at least an hour and a half drive south of Manito.
00:07:31.951 --> 00:07:35.680
It'd be a beautiful drive inland definitely one for the dry season.
00:07:36.091 --> 00:07:37.021
Also Manto.
00:07:37.021 --> 00:07:38.940
There are a number of excellent snorkeling sites.
00:07:38.940 --> 00:07:40.740
I've already mentioned$1 Beach.
00:07:40.930 --> 00:07:45.550
There's a site called K 41, which is 41 kilometers east of Dilly.
00:07:45.750 --> 00:07:48.750
And that is a well-known site for snorkeling and diving.
00:07:48.850 --> 00:07:52.571
There's also Bob's Rock, which is just down the road from K 41.
00:07:53.026 --> 00:07:59.925
I would note that once you start getting further east from Manito towards bacal, the risks of crocodiles do increase significantly.
00:08:00.115 --> 00:08:02.276
So it's best to say closer to the Dili end.
00:08:02.516 --> 00:08:07.636
There are a number of dive companies in Dili that will offer day trips out to go diving along those sites.
00:08:07.685 --> 00:08:09.665
And they're all shore dives, so you don't need a boat.
00:08:09.716 --> 00:08:11.786
They'll provide transport and take you from dili.
00:08:11.995 --> 00:08:16.165
You can walk in off the shore, go for some great diving and then come back.
00:08:16.165 --> 00:08:19.586
That's a really good way of exploring the coast of Manito.
00:08:20.086 --> 00:08:30.565
In terms of transport, this is probably one of the better connected parts of the country because the road is excellent and you can get public buses out to Baal, which costs$5 or less, and you can get off the bus.
00:08:30.625 --> 00:08:38.846
The trouble with the buses is they all tend to leave about the same time and return at the same time, so you need to get to your destination at the end of the day.
00:08:39.035 --> 00:08:44.875
If you get off early, the chance of getting another bus to continue the journey might be a bit challenging depending on the time of day.
00:08:45.375 --> 00:08:47.686
So that's giving you a bit of a flavor for Manna Tutu.
00:08:47.985 --> 00:08:50.806
Thank you so much for listening to exploring Timor Less Day.

I would strongly recommend that you take a short detour and spend an hour or two exploring the town.
00:03:44.515 --> 00:03:46.705
There's actually quite a few things worth seeing.
00:03:46.975 --> 00:03:47.876
Now there are two.
00:03:48.230 --> 00:03:49.700
Hills in Manito.
00:03:49.980 --> 00:03:55.540
The most popular one has a statue of San Antonio, and that's to the east of town.
00:03:55.781 --> 00:03:59.151
The road up to that is rough but manageable.
00:03:59.320 --> 00:04:01.991
And that is a popular place for people to go and pray.
00:04:02.140 --> 00:04:05.381
And it also offers some excellent views of the surrounding area.
00:04:05.881 --> 00:04:18.480
My preference is the other hill, which is more to the west, and that is topped by a former Portuguese colonial administrator's house, which is completely run down, it's fallen apart.
00:04:18.480 --> 00:04:19.560
It's basically ruins.
00:04:19.591 --> 00:04:22.531
It's got atmospheric ruins though, and it has some incredible views.
00:04:22.740 --> 00:04:27.701
And just round the corner from it is a manmade cave shrine with a statue of the Virgin Mary.
00:04:27.880 --> 00:04:34.350
Now, the road up to there, I'm not sure you'd do it in the car very easily, but on a motorbike it is manageable.
00:04:34.511 --> 00:04:37.961
It's a pretty challenging bit of road, but it's worth it for the fantastic views.
00:04:38.461 --> 00:04:47.261
Now, in Manito town itself, there's a couple of plazas and memorials to timor's heroes from the Indonesian occupation era.
00:04:47.471 --> 00:04:50.891
And then the sizeable sent Anthony Church lies close to the waterfront.
00:04:51.071 --> 00:04:56.891
The original church was built in 1880, but the current one was renovated in 2009.
00:04:57.141 --> 00:05:00.771
And I think it needs a bit more renovation now, but it is an interesting church to visit.
00:05:00.771 --> 00:05:03.730
And if you look around the outside of the church, there are 14.
00:05:03.956 --> 00:05:08.826
Stations of the cross in the grounds along with another shrine to the Virgin Mary.
00:05:09.096 --> 00:05:12.875
So there's a few things to see in Manito Town itself when you're heading east out.
00:05:12.906 --> 00:05:15.216
Manito, there are a couple of sort fields.
00:05:15.216 --> 00:05:23.286
These are the largest salt fields in the country, and depending on what time of year you come, if it's during the wet season, they may be filled up with water.
00:05:23.446 --> 00:05:25.485
If it's in the dry season, they might be dry.
00:05:25.485 --> 00:05:32.235
There's a happy medium where you get these beautiful white and red colored kind of pools of water depending on what time of year you visit.
00:05:32.735 --> 00:05:40.665
Probably the best known site in Manito is the Lia Church which is often proclaimed as one of the most beautiful churches in Timor Lester.
00:05:40.915 --> 00:05:42.956
This is just a short detail off the main road.
00:05:42.956 --> 00:05:45.505
Just make sure you turn left as you head through town.
00:05:45.805 --> 00:05:49.975
This is a Portuguese design church built in 1933.
00:05:50.161 --> 00:05:52.201
It's this pastoral pink color on the outside.
00:05:52.201 --> 00:05:53.161
It's very attractive.
00:05:53.370 --> 00:05:57.630
And then the interior is very colorful with green and yellow striped ceiling.
00:05:57.630 --> 00:06:00.841
It is definitely one of the nicer churches I've visited in the country.
00:06:01.341 --> 00:06:06.831
Now for most people, that's what you're gonna see in Manito, is you're gonna go along the coastal road and those are the main sites to visit.
00:06:07.141 --> 00:06:14.670
For those who are a bit more adventurous and have got suitable four wheel drive vehicle or a comfortable on a motorbike, you can head inland.
00:06:14.800 --> 00:06:16.781
The main town's inland is lubar.
00:06:16.815 --> 00:06:20.985
Is in beautiful surroundings, lots of mountainous hills around.
00:06:21.225 --> 00:06:25.605
It's got a quite impressive church and some more remains from the Portuguese era as well.
00:06:25.605 --> 00:06:28.185
It's a bit out the way, but it's quite an interesting place to visit.
00:06:28.185 --> 00:06:30.665
I did it as part of a big hike in that region.
00:06:30.915 --> 00:06:38.406
This is one of the few places I didn't visit in Timor Este, but if you do head from Manito inland quite away inland, you get to at Dara.
00:06:38.586 --> 00:06:42.665
So this is one of the most important sacred sites within Timor Este.
00:06:43.165 --> 00:06:49.555
So in the early 20th century the Virgin Mary appeared to several women near a large Banyan tree on the hills.
00:06:49.706 --> 00:06:51.355
This is near uh, SIA.
00:06:51.656 --> 00:07:01.581
And as a result, a shrine, which was consecrated as a national shrine in 2004 a church, a convent, a college, and a town were built during Portuguese times.
00:07:01.831 --> 00:07:06.360
Every October hundreds of people travel on pilgrimage from around the country to visit the shrine.
00:07:06.661 --> 00:07:31.651
00:07:31.951 --> 00:07:35.680
It'd be a beautiful drive inland definitely one for the dry season.
00:07:36.091 --> 00:07:37.021
Also Manto.
00:07:37.021 --> 00:07:38.940
There are a number of excellent snorkeling sites.
00:07:38.940 --> 00:07:40.740
I've already mentioned$1 Beach.
00:07:40.930 --> 00:07:45.550
There's a site called K 41, which is 41 kilometers east of Dilly.
00:07:45.750 --> 00:07:48.750
And that is a well-known site for snorkeling and diving.
00:07:48.850 --> 00:07:52.571
There's also Bob's Rock, which is just down the road from K 41.
00:07:53.026 --> 00:07:59.925
I would note that once you start getting further east from Manito towards bacal, the risks of crocodiles do increase significantly.
00:08:00.115 --> 00:08:02.276
So it's best to say closer to the Dili end.
00:08:02.516 --> 00:08:07.636
There are a number of dive companies in Dili that will offer day trips out to go diving along those sites.
00:08:07.685 --> 00:08:09.665
And they're all shore dives, so you don't need a boat.
00:08:09.716 --> 00:08:11.786
They'll provide transport and take you from dili.
00:08:11.995 --> 00:08:16.165
You can walk in off the shore, go for some great diving and then come back.
00:08:16.165 --> 00:08:19.586
That's a really good way of exploring the coast of Manito.
00:08:20.086 --> 00:08:30.565
In terms of transport, this is probably one of the better connected parts of the country because the road is excellent and you can get public buses out to Baal, which costs$5 or less, and you can get off the bus.
00:08:30.625 --> 00:08:38.846
The trouble with the buses is they all tend to leave about the same time and return at the same time, so you need to get to your destination at the end of the day.
00:08:39.035 --> 00:08:44.875
If you get off early, the chance of getting another bus to continue the journey might be a bit challenging depending on the time of day.
00:08:45.375 --> 00:08:47.686
So that's giving you a bit of a flavor for Manna Tutu.
00:08:47.985 --> 00:08:50.806
Thank you so much for listening to exploring Timor Less Day.
