In this episode, George Lizos sits down with Elyse Welles to explore how to practice Hellenism and work with the Greek Gods in a way that is respectful, authentic, and free from cultural appropriation. Together, they unpack the concepts of spiritual imperialism and epistemic colonialism, and how ancient traditions like Hellenic spirituality are often filtered through a modern Western lens that prioritizes categorization, mythology, and “correctness” over lived, embodied practice.
Drawing from her perspective as both American and Greek, Elyse highlights the differences between approaching the Greek Gods as mythological figures versus engaging with them as part of a living spiritual tradition. The conversation explores questions of authority, gatekeeping, and spiritual creativity, offering grounded guidance on how to honor the Greek Gods without fear, rigidity, or appropriation. This episode is an invitation to approach Hellenism with humility, reverence, and a deeper connection to its cultural and spiritual roots.
