Hey everyone, welcome to Emmaus Road Podcast.
00:00:09.199 --> 00:00:19.679
Our hope is that it can help supplement your daily devotionals and be something meaningful to you that will help deepen your faith with Jesus Christ.
00:00:20.000 --> 00:00:23.039
Now for our host, Michael Jergensen.
00:00:26.480 --> 00:00:28.960
Welcome to Emmaus Road.
00:00:29.199 --> 00:00:33.359
I saw on a t-shirt the other day this statement.
00:00:34.000 --> 00:00:36.000
Sprinkle kindness.
00:00:36.479 --> 00:00:38.479
Shower positivity.
00:00:38.799 --> 00:00:47.759
I wasn't able to see the front of the t-shirt to know if they actually had a solution as to how to do that.
00:00:48.000 --> 00:00:54.640
I see on the back of football helmets statements like choose love and be kind.
00:00:55.759 --> 00:01:03.359
And I wonder sometimes if that's all it takes to become a good person.
00:01:03.759 --> 00:01:13.439
If we could put a sign up in our yard or put a plaque up on the wall, whether that would actually be good enough to make us good.
00:01:14.640 --> 00:01:22.799
And the basic question that I want to talk about today is how can I become a good person?
00:01:23.439 --> 00:01:33.680
And I think that that's probably something that we all want is how could I become a good person?
00:01:34.560 --> 00:01:45.359
So I think there's something basically within us where we would like to make ourselves acceptable to God.
00:01:45.920 --> 00:01:53.280
And God's problem is how can He make us acceptable to Him?
00:01:53.439 --> 00:02:03.599
And I know that there are lots of theories and theological uh interpretations as to how that actually happens.
00:02:03.840 --> 00:02:09.919
And so I'm going to try to give you at least one interpretation uh today.
00:02:10.000 --> 00:02:15.039
And I'm gonna have uh a number of scriptures that I'm going to use to do that.
00:02:15.280 --> 00:02:22.639
And probably one of my favorite verses in the Bible is that I am not ashamed of the gospel.
00:02:23.360 --> 00:02:33.039
It is the power of God for salvation to everyone who has faith, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
00:02:33.360 --> 00:02:48.560
For in it the righteousness of God is revealed, through faith, for faith, as it is written, he through he who through faith is righteous shall live.
00:02:49.039 --> 00:02:58.159
So the first question I would want to ask is where is the righteousness of God revealed?
00:02:58.479 --> 00:03:08.719
And I believe that the righteousness of God is revealed, actually revealed in the life of the believer through faith.
00:03:08.960 --> 00:03:17.360
And as the believer lives out his life of faith, he is in fact righteous.
00:03:17.680 --> 00:03:23.919
And that righteousness that comes by faith, you could say, is life.
00:03:24.719 --> 00:03:28.879
He who through faith is righteous shall live.
00:03:29.599 --> 00:03:35.680
There's a verse in first John chapter three that says, Let no one deceive you.
00:03:36.080 --> 00:03:41.680
He who does right is righteous.
00:03:41.919 --> 00:03:53.599
And I don't believe that there is any kind of righteousness that doesn't include the way we live, the choices that we make.
00:03:54.319 --> 00:04:05.199
And so uh another verse that I had looked at was cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his arm.
00:04:05.759 --> 00:04:13.759
And I think that there is actually a tendency for us to want to trust in our own righteousness.
00:04:14.400 --> 00:04:24.720
But um I don't think our own righteousness is going to be good enough, but the life of God through faith is.
00:05:28.800 --> 00:05:36.959
Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.
00:05:37.279 --> 00:06:23.439
For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as refuse in order that I might gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own, which is based on law, or you could say based on your own efforts, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith, that I might know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and that if possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead.
00:06:23.759 --> 00:06:44.879
And I think all too often we want to offer people some kind of security based on a belief about God and praying a prayer that supposedly will take care of everything having to do with righteousness.
00:06:45.040 --> 00:07:02.959
And I think from God's perspective, he intends to work his life into us so that we in fact are righteous, just like Abraham, who believed God, and God said, Yeah, that's righteous.
00:07:03.279 --> 00:07:06.160
So, one last verse from Paul.
00:07:07.279 --> 00:07:29.759
Put off your old nature, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and put on the new nature, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.
00:07:30.560 --> 00:07:39.120
So humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God that in due time he might exalt you.
00:07:39.680 --> 00:07:54.319
I don't think that we will come into the presence of God boasting about our righteousness and all that we have done to make us righteous, and God declaring, saying, Yeah, yeah, you did it.
00:07:54.560 --> 00:08:00.480
Um I think in heaven all the glory is going to go to God.
00:08:00.959 --> 00:08:07.600
And God is going to be glorified because he did the work in us.
00:08:08.240 --> 00:08:20.480
Our job is to submit to him, to humble ourselves before him, and allow him to create his righteousness in us.
00:08:20.879 --> 00:08:23.839
Um, we'll put the references to these scriptures.
00:08:24.000 --> 00:08:38.320
I challenge you to look at them in context and ask yourself uh the questions about what it is that you believe about the righteousness of God in your life.
00:08:38.559 --> 00:08:40.080
Thanks for listening.
