Today I would like to ask the question: Is it possible to please God?

And this comes from a prayer that's found in the first chapter of Colossians.

And Paul says, And so from the day we heard of it, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding to lead a life worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God.

It may sound silly to ask the question, is it possible to be pleased with God?

I think there's uh some confusion probably that exists on that subject.

I've heard people say uh things like, well, God doesn't really see you, he sees Jesus in you, and consequently, he would be pleased with you because he sees Jesus in you, or something along those lines.

And in a sense, that's absurd.

Um, that God would only be pleased with you if he sees Jesus in you.

One thing I can tell you about God absolutely with certainty, God is not selfish, and he does not seek his own good.

God in his heart and in his very nature, he is love, and the nature of love is to give, and the nature of giving is sacrifice, and God is willing to sacrifice himself for you because he loves you, and because he loves you, he wants what is best for you.

So, in one very real sense, to follow God and to serve him and to love him is to do what is best for you, and that since that is what God wants for you, that's what God is going to be doing in his efforts to rescue you from your sin.

This is in Romans 8, and it talks about uh the life that is set on the spirit um is life, and the life that is set on the flesh is death.

And he says that those who set their mind on the flesh, it is hostile to God, it is does not submit to God's law, indeed, it cannot, and those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
