Written near the end of Jane Austen’s life and published posthumously in 1817, Persuasion follows Anne Elliot and Captain Frederick Wentworth through one of Austen’s most mature and quietly moving stories.
Eight years after Anne was persuaded to end their engagement, Wentworth returns as a successful naval captain. Their lives cross again among family obligations, old acquaintances, changing fortunes, and feelings that have had a very long time to settle.
Persuasion is unmistakably Austen, filled with her sharp eye for vanity, status, family, and social absurdity. But there is a different emotional texture here too: autumnal, patient, intimate, and deeply interested in the passage of time.
