ABOUT THIS EPISODE
Bridging the gap between home and school can feel daunting, but for parent volunteer Denielle Fields, taking that first step unlocked a powerful understanding of her child's education and the vital role parents can play. Initially motivated simply to understand the curriculum and where her kindergartener stood amongst his peers, Denielle discovered that getting involved offered far more than just insight.Starting with the standard background checks required for field trips, a casual conversation with another parent volunteer opened her eyes to the possibility of helping directly within the classroom. What began as making copies or reading with students soon evolved. Denielle witnessed firsthand the classroom structure, identified specific areas where her son needed support, and saw the immense value in that extra year of kindergarten – a tough decision initially, but one she now wholeheartedly recommends for the incredible growth it fostered. Her involvement didn't stop there; it blossomed into helping multiple teachers across different grade levels and even the school librarian, building lasting relationships founded on mutual respect and support.Denielle emphasizes that communication is key, adapting her approach to each teacher's style while consistently showing up with a supportive attitude. She learned that teachers deeply appreciate knowing parents understand their dedication and genuinely want to help. From her perspective inside the classroom, she sees the love, professionalism, and care teachers pour into their students daily, navigating challenges with grace while juggling their own families and responsibilities. Her experience also highlights the importance of seeking resources when needed. Recognizing her son required extra support after repeating kindergarten, Denielle proactively sought tutoring, both from external specialists and eventually from a trusted teacher within the school—a connection strengthened by her volunteer work. This "all hands on deck" approach, though demanding at the time, paid dividends, transforming homework time from a struggle into a confident, independent task for her son.Denielle’s journey underscores a powerful truth: showing up matters. Whether it's volunteering time in the classroom, helping with tasks from home, seeking needed resources, or simply building a supportive relationship with your child's teacher, parental involvement creates a stronger educational "army." It demystifies the school day, fosters collaboration, and ultimately benefits the children at the heart of it all. Her experience reminds us that every child learns differently, grades don’t define potential, and fostering grit and confidence is paramount.
