A new personalized brain-stimulation treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder is
so effective that more than half of those treated enjoy a significant reduction of their symptoms and 68% x no longer meet the clinical criteria for PTSD. This announcement comes from Texas A&M University though the data supporting it has not yet appeared in a peer-reviewed journal.
The treatment, called Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy (MeRT), uses brainwave measurements and AI to specifically target trans-cranial magnetic stimulation for each patient. The technology was developed by California-based Wave Neuroscience in collaboration with researchers at the Texas A&M Health Institute of Biosciences and Technology.
This treatment begins with an electroencephalogram or EEG that records the patient's brain electrical activity. An AI-assisted analysis uses those measurements to help personalize the settings for the magnetic stimulation delivered by a coil placed against the scalp
This therapeutic approach is unique since it personalizes the delivery of the magnetic stimulation. In the clinical trial, 158 participants were randomized in a double-blind, sham-controlled study. Treatment involved five sessions weekly for approximately five to six weeks. The treatments are well-tolerated and the reported improvements appear to persist after treatment ended.
This news is exciting. As with all discoveries, until the data can be reviewed by independent authorities and the findings confirmed, the technique remains only a future possibility.
