Israel & Palestine: When Judea Burned (Part 1)

WEBVTT
00:00:00.800 --> 00:00:03.040
Hey everyone, this is Paul, and welcome back.
00:00:03.359 --> 00:00:10.480
I know it has been a while since I've spoken to you, but here we are, and yeah, you read the title of the episode.
00:00:10.960 --> 00:00:11.759
We are doing it.
00:00:12.320 --> 00:00:14.800
So I've been putting this series off for a while now.
00:00:15.359 --> 00:00:17.280
And I want to be honest with you about why.
00:00:17.760 --> 00:00:20.399
First of all, the history is fascinating to me.
00:00:20.800 --> 00:00:24.399
It is some of the most layered, complex history on the planet.
00:00:24.879 --> 00:00:26.719
And it does fit the show perfectly.
00:00:27.440 --> 00:00:39.920
Two peoples in the same land, competing origin stories, competing traumas, each one's foundational moment of liberation is tangled up in the other's foundational moment of catastrophe.
00:00:40.560 --> 00:00:47.840
If you designed a case study for how defining moments shape nations across centuries, you designed the Israel-Palestine.
00:00:48.640 --> 00:00:58.960
But I've been putting it off because I know I know that no matter what I say over the next five episodes, I'm going to make people really angry.
00:00:59.600 --> 00:01:01.439
And it's not just a little angry.
00:01:02.079 --> 00:01:14.079
This is a subject where everyone has already decided what the story is, where every word you choose is a political act, or even the name you use for the land is a declaration of whose side you're on.
00:01:14.480 --> 00:01:17.200
So let me just get this out of the way up front.
00:01:18.159 --> 00:01:26.959
If you're listening to this, hoping that I'll confirm one side is entirely right and the other side is entirely wrong, you're going to be disappointed.
00:01:27.760 --> 00:01:32.959
That is not what I try to do on this show, and this is not what this episode is going to be about.
00:01:33.280 --> 00:01:41.920
I try to do people making choices under impossible circumstances, and then living with the consequences of those choices for generations.
00:01:42.719 --> 00:01:44.879
That is the whole point of double helix.
00:01:45.519 --> 00:01:47.519
I thought about skipping this entirely.
00:01:47.920 --> 00:01:53.599
I thought about moving on to something safer, something where the wounds aren't still so open and bleeding.
00:01:53.840 --> 00:01:56.079
But here's the thing that kept nagging at me.
00:01:56.319 --> 00:02:07.439
Every time I see people arguing about this conflict online or in the news or at dinner tables, what strikes me isn't just how much passion there is, is how little history there is.
00:02:08.000 --> 00:02:15.759
People are screaming at each other with absolute moral certainty, and most of them couldn't even tell you what the Balfour Declaration was.
00:02:16.159 --> 00:02:25.919
Or what happened in 1948, or why 1967 changed everything in this conflict, or what Oslo was supposed to be and why it fell apart.
00:02:26.159 --> 00:02:27.759
And to me that is the problem.
00:02:28.560 --> 00:02:30.960
Not too much knowledge, it's too little.
00:02:31.599 --> 00:02:36.800
When you don't understand how we got here, all you're left with is the horror of the present moment.
00:02:37.439 --> 00:02:41.360
And horror without context just becomes fuel for more horror.
00:02:42.159 --> 00:02:43.599
So we're going here.
00:02:44.080 --> 00:02:45.599
But we're gonna start way back.
00:02:46.000 --> 00:02:47.439
And I mean way back.
00:02:47.919 --> 00:02:49.919
The furthest back I've gone in the show.
00:02:50.479 --> 00:02:55.199
With the Roman destruction of Judea in the year 70 of our current era.
00:02:56.159 --> 00:03:06.879
Because you cannot understand Zionism without understanding two thousand years of Jewish exile and the longing for return that kept a scattered people intact across centuries.
00:03:07.120 --> 00:03:20.319
And you also cannot understand Palestinian identity without understanding what it means to have lived on and worked a land for generations, only to be told that someone else's ancient claim supersedes your present reality.
00:03:20.879 --> 00:03:25.280
Both of these things are true, both of these experiences are real.
00:03:25.759 --> 00:03:33.599
And the tragedy, the the thing that makes this conflict so resistant to resolution is that acknowledging one doesn't erase the other.
00:03:34.000 --> 00:03:35.280
It coexists.
00:03:36.879 --> 00:03:45.759
We're at double helixhistory podcast at gmail.com, and I'm genuinely meaning when I say I do want to hear from you, especially in this series.
00:03:46.159 --> 00:03:49.120
Before we go into the episode, a quick programming note.
00:03:49.520 --> 00:03:56.800
So if you've been with the show for a while, you might remember that we did a series on the Colombian conflict and one in the American Civil War.
00:03:57.439 --> 00:04:01.759
Well, I didn't like how they turned out, so I went back and completely rewrote both of them.
00:04:02.080 --> 00:04:07.680
It's all new writing, new immersive sound design, the full treatment that we've been getting used to lately.
00:04:07.919 --> 00:04:12.159
So if you listen to the originals, I think you'll hear a real difference this time.
00:04:12.319 --> 00:04:15.840
And if you haven't heard them, this is a great opportunity to jump in.
00:04:16.560 --> 00:04:23.439
They're going to be available pretty soon on the feed, and they're going to pop up as new episodes, even though they're old episodes.
00:04:23.839 --> 00:04:31.120
And speaking of listening, if you're getting something out of this show, here's how you can help please rate us, leave a review.
00:04:31.360 --> 00:04:35.759
And I know it sounds small, but it genuinely changes how many people discover the podcast.
00:04:36.079 --> 00:04:41.680
So again, leave a rating, leave a review, and share the episode with someone.
00:04:42.000 --> 00:04:46.160
You can text it to a friend, you can post it, you can mention it in conversation.
00:04:46.639 --> 00:04:54.879
And if you have thoughts, feedbacks, ideas for the future series, send them my way again at doublehelixhistory podcast at gmail.com.
00:04:55.439 --> 00:05:08.480
Now for this series specifically, if you think this kind of history matters and this kind of approach matters, trying to understand a conflict rather than just picking a team, please share this with someone who disagrees with you about it.
00:05:09.040 --> 00:05:10.399
That's who needs to hear the most.
00:05:19.439 --> 00:05:22.160
An empire is raising a nation from the mountain.
00:05:22.879 --> 00:05:28.879
And they are about to create a longing so powerful that it will reshape the world two thousand years later.
00:05:45.839 --> 00:05:50.240
Not a wing of it, not a corner, the entire complex.
00:05:50.800 --> 00:06:16.800
The holiest site in the Jewish world, the place where heaven and earth were supposed to meet, the building that had taken forty six years to rebuild and stood as the beating heart of an entire civilization, is being consumed by flames so intense that the gold plating on its facade is melting, running down the white limestone walls and bright rivulets that the Roman soldiers were later safe looked like rivers of light.
00:06:18.720 --> 00:06:27.600
Titus Flavius, son of the new Emperor Vespatian, thirty years old, commanding the most disciplined military force on earth.
00:06:27.759 --> 00:06:30.160
It's watching from the Mount of Olives.
00:06:30.879 --> 00:06:42.959
Later, Roman historians will claim he tried to save the temple, and he gave orders to spare it, but the fire was an accident started by an overzealous soldier who threw a torch through a window.
00:06:43.839 --> 00:06:50.160
Titus is his father's son, and his father sent him here to end this problem permanently.
00:06:50.639 --> 00:06:54.079
The Jewish revolt has been raging for four years now.
00:06:54.319 --> 00:06:59.680
It's already cost Rome one humiliated general and an entire legion's equal standard.
00:06:59.920 --> 00:07:02.800
The worst is grades a Roman army can suffer.
00:07:03.040 --> 00:07:12.800
And this patient, who sees the imperial throne during the chaos of the year of the four emperors, needs a decide to victory to prove his dynasty deserves to rule.
00:07:14.720 --> 00:07:19.920
We are in Jerusalem on August 30th of the year 70.
00:07:22.800 --> 00:07:27.040
Inside the temple, priests are still performing sacrifices.
00:07:27.439 --> 00:07:28.879
The walls are burning.
00:07:29.120 --> 00:07:35.600
Roman soldiers are pouring through the outer courts, and priests in white linen robes are still standing at the altar.
00:07:35.839 --> 00:07:37.519
Because this is what they do.
00:07:38.000 --> 00:07:39.759
This is what their fathers did.
00:07:39.920 --> 00:07:46.560
And their fathers before that, going back, they believe, to Aaron, the brother of Moses.
00:07:48.560 --> 00:07:56.560
The daily sacrifice has not been interrupted since the temple was rebuilt after the Babylonian exile five centuries ago.
00:07:56.879 --> 00:07:59.120
They will not be the ones to stop it.
00:08:00.720 --> 00:08:07.680
Roman centurion later describes watching a priest complete the afternoon offering as flames licked the ceiling above him.
00:08:07.920 --> 00:08:14.160
The priest finished the ritual, turned to face the approaching soldiers, and was cut down midprey.
00:08:24.079 --> 00:08:30.480
Josephus writes that the crash was followed by a collective scream from the Jewish population of Jerusalem.
00:08:30.800 --> 00:08:34.240
A scream of something being torn out of people's souls.
00:08:36.000 --> 00:08:39.519
Because this is so much more than a building burning.
00:08:39.840 --> 00:08:51.120
For Jews in the first century, the temple is where God literally lives, where sins are forgiven, where the nation's covenant with the divine is maintained through daily sacrifice.
00:08:51.519 --> 00:09:00.720
Without the temple, the entire system of atonement, of priestly authority, of divine presence on earth, all of it stops.
00:09:01.200 --> 00:09:08.559
The relationship between God and his people, as they've understood it for a thousand years, has just been severed.
00:09:08.879 --> 00:09:11.919
The center of the universe is collapsing.
00:09:14.559 --> 00:09:18.879
In the ashes of this burning building, two things are born.
00:09:19.759 --> 00:09:29.200
One is a longing for return so powerful that it will survive 20 centuries of exile, persecution, and attempted extermination.
00:09:29.679 --> 00:09:33.679
A longing that will eventually create the modern state of Israel.
00:09:34.320 --> 00:09:36.720
The other is a vacancy.
00:09:37.120 --> 00:09:46.879
A land that will continue to be lived in, worked, built upon, and loved by the people who remained, whose descendants will become the Palestinians.
00:09:47.919 --> 00:09:50.399
Two peoples, one land.
00:09:51.039 --> 00:09:54.159
And it starts here, in the flames.
00:09:58.320 --> 00:10:02.960
This is part one of our series on Israel and Palestine.
00:10:03.759 --> 00:10:08.960
You know how they say you can't understand someone until you walk a mile in their shoes?
00:10:09.360 --> 00:10:14.559
Well, I'd argue you can't understand a nation until you've walked through its history.
00:10:14.879 --> 00:10:19.200
Not just to highlight Rio or the sanitized version you find in textbooks.
00:10:19.440 --> 00:10:22.080
I mean really getting into its DNA.
00:10:22.320 --> 00:10:25.600
Those defining moments that shaped everything that came after.
00:10:26.159 --> 00:10:35.360
Those moments where paths were chosen, where decisions were made in palaces and backrooms and city streets that changed the course of millions of lives.
00:10:35.919 --> 00:10:46.320
I'm your host, Paul, and this is Double Helix, Blueprint of Nations, where we unravel the genetic code of countries through their most transformative moments.
00:10:46.480 --> 00:10:50.799
Think of it like ancestry testing, but for entire nations.
00:10:51.039 --> 00:10:58.399
We dig deep into the historical DNA, finding those crucial moments that made countries who they are today.
00:11:06.720 --> 00:11:12.799
Before Rome burned a temple, we need to understand what Judea was in the first century.
00:11:13.120 --> 00:11:18.080
And that means briefly answering a question that sounds simple, but really isn't.
00:11:18.399 --> 00:11:21.919
Who are the Jews and what is their claim to this land?
00:11:28.080 --> 00:11:38.799
The Jewish story, as Jews tell it, and as the Hebrew Bible records it, begins with Abraham, roughly 2,000 years before the events of this episode.
00:11:40.559 --> 00:11:42.879
God makes a covenant with Abraham.
00:11:43.120 --> 00:11:49.840
Leave your home in Mesopotamia, go to the land I will show you, and I will make your descendants a great nation.
00:11:50.320 --> 00:11:55.279
The land is Canaan, what will become Israel and Judea.
00:11:56.639 --> 00:11:58.000
Abraham goes.
00:12:04.799 --> 00:12:16.720
Those tribes end up enslaved in Egypt, are liberated under Moses, wandered the desert for 40 years, and eventually returned to Canaan to claim what they believed God promised them.
00:12:18.080 --> 00:12:29.600
Now, how much of that is historical and how much is foundational mythology is the debate scholars have been having for centuries, and it's not one we need to settle here.
00:12:30.000 --> 00:12:32.320
What matters for our story is this.
00:12:32.720 --> 00:12:38.240
By roughly the year 1000 BCE, there is an Israelite kingdom in this land.
00:12:38.559 --> 00:12:50.240
David makes Jerusalem his capital, his son Solomon builds the first temple, the house of God, the center of worship, the physical anchor of the covenant between God and his people.
00:12:52.240 --> 00:13:02.159
For the next four centuries, through civil wars, splits in northern and southern kingdoms, invasion and recoveries, the Jewish people are rooted in this land.
00:13:02.480 --> 00:13:12.080
It is theirs in the way that a place becomes yours when your ancestors built it, led for it, wrote their sacred text about it, and buried their dead in it.
00:13:13.200 --> 00:13:18.559
The first temple is destroyed by the Babylonians in the year 586 BCE.
00:13:18.960 --> 00:13:25.519
The Jewish elite are exiled to Babylon, and here, already, the pattern begins.
00:13:26.399 --> 00:13:29.519
Exile, longing, and return.
00:13:30.480 --> 00:13:38.000
The Psalms written during the Babylonian captivity contain lines that will echo for the next 26 centuries.
00:13:39.200 --> 00:13:41.039
By the rivers of Babylon.
00:13:41.279 --> 00:13:44.080
There we sat and wept when we remember Zion.
00:13:46.000 --> 00:13:51.759
Within a few generations, the Persians conquer Babylon and allow the Jews to return.
00:13:52.000 --> 00:13:57.360
They rebuild their temple, the second temple, the one the Romans are going to destroy.
00:13:57.679 --> 00:14:00.399
Jewish life in the land resumes.
00:14:03.600 --> 00:14:05.440
But here's what's crucial.
00:14:05.679 --> 00:14:10.399
This is the part that tends to get left out of whichever version of history you were taught.
00:14:11.279 --> 00:14:18.639
The land of Canaan, of Israel, of Judea, whatever name you want to give it, has never belonged to only one people.
00:14:19.360 --> 00:14:23.200
When the Israelites arrived, the Canaanites were already there.
00:14:23.679 --> 00:14:30.639
When the kingdom rose and fell, other people lived alongside among and around the Jewish population.
00:14:31.519 --> 00:14:43.279
This is in fact a crossroads, a narrow strip of fertile land connecting Egypt, Mesopotamia, Arabia, and the Mediterranean, and it has always been home to many people at once.
00:14:44.879 --> 00:14:49.039
By the first century CE, the population of the region is mixed.
00:14:49.679 --> 00:14:52.639
The Jews are the majority in Judea and Galilee.
00:14:52.879 --> 00:15:02.320
But Greek-speaking pagans, Samaritans, Nebataeans, Arabs, Phoenicians, and others lived in coastal cities to the capitalists.
00:15:02.639 --> 00:15:11.039
And again, in the territory surrounding the Jewish heartland, the Arab presence in and around this land is also ancient.
00:15:11.440 --> 00:15:17.600
The Arab tribes have traded, settled, and migrated through the region for centuries before the Roman period.
00:15:18.159 --> 00:15:33.120
After the Islamic conquest of the seventh century, that Arab presence will deepen enormously, and over the following centuries, the population becomes predominantly Arabic speaking and Muslim with significant Christian communities as well.
00:15:35.039 --> 00:15:38.879
These are the people whose descendants will become Palestinians.
00:15:39.200 --> 00:15:44.320
Their connection to the land is built on something quieter than a founding moment or a divine covenant.
00:15:45.120 --> 00:15:50.480
The accumulated weight of generations of living, farming, building, and belonging.
00:15:51.200 --> 00:15:54.320
They don't need an ancient text to prove that they're from here.
00:15:54.720 --> 00:16:00.639
They're from here because they've always been here, because the land remembers their labor and their death.
00:16:02.480 --> 00:16:16.159
Both claims are old, both claims are real, and understanding that, holding both of them in your mind at the same time without one canceling the other is the only way to make sense of what follows.
00:16:19.039 --> 00:16:21.919
So, first century Judea.
00:16:29.039 --> 00:16:33.360
Judea wasn't some backwater province that Rome barely noticed.
00:16:33.519 --> 00:16:34.799
It was a headache.
00:16:35.039 --> 00:16:42.080
It had been a headache for a hundred years, and by 66 CE, it was about to become a migrant.
00:16:43.039 --> 00:16:47.200
Judea had been under some form of foreign rule for centuries.
00:16:47.440 --> 00:16:51.679
Babylonians, Persians, Greeks, and now Romans.
00:16:51.919 --> 00:17:01.840
But unlike most conquered peoples in the ancient world, Jews have the stubborn insistence on monotheism that makes them terrible imperial subjects.
00:17:02.159 --> 00:17:06.720
Every other people in the Roman Empire can't absorb Roman gods alongside their own.
00:17:06.880 --> 00:17:07.839
It's easy.
00:17:08.079 --> 00:17:14.559
You just add Jupiter to the pantheon, put a statue of the emperor in your temple, and everyone gets along.
00:17:14.880 --> 00:17:22.640
The Romans don't care who else you worship, as long as you acknowledge that Caesar is divine and Rome is supreme.
00:17:23.759 --> 00:17:25.680
Jews can't do this.
00:17:26.000 --> 00:17:30.559
The first commandment is, you shall have no other gods before me.
00:17:31.119 --> 00:17:36.640
Putting a statue of the emperor in the temple is an existential violation of the covenant with God.
00:17:36.960 --> 00:17:41.119
It is the single thing they cannot do and remain who they are.
00:17:41.839 --> 00:17:45.519
Roman imperial control is built on religious incorporation, right?
00:17:45.759 --> 00:17:55.039
You conquer a people, you fold their god into the Roman system, pretty soon everyone's worshiping together, and the conquered people start thinking of themselves as Roman.
00:17:55.440 --> 00:17:59.680
Gaul, Spain, Britain, North Africa, and Greece.
00:17:59.920 --> 00:18:01.440
It works every time.
00:18:01.839 --> 00:18:03.599
Except in Judea.
00:18:03.920 --> 00:18:07.279
And that drives Rome absolutely crazy.
00:18:08.000 --> 00:18:10.079
The Romans try to accommodate this.
00:18:10.240 --> 00:18:12.240
They grant Jews special exemptions.
00:18:12.640 --> 00:18:14.880
They don't have to sacrifice to the emperor.
00:18:15.039 --> 00:18:16.400
They can keep their Sabbath.
00:18:16.640 --> 00:18:19.920
They can maintain their own legal system for religious matters.
00:18:20.160 --> 00:18:23.279
These are extraordinary concessions by Roman standards.
00:18:23.440 --> 00:18:26.480
No other subject people get this kind of treatment.
00:18:27.039 --> 00:18:30.640
But the accommodation breeds resentment on both sides.
00:18:31.039 --> 00:18:36.000
Romans see Jewish refusal to participate in imperial religion as arrogant.
00:18:36.319 --> 00:18:41.039
Jews see Roman presence in their holy land as an ongoing desecration.
00:18:41.279 --> 00:18:57.279
And caught in between are the Jewish elites, the temple aristocracy, the Sadducees, who figured out how to work with Rome while maintaining religious integrity, more or less, and who are getting very, very rich doing it.
00:19:01.599 --> 00:19:07.200
The real fuel for the revolt is economics and governance, though, more than theology.
00:19:07.839 --> 00:19:14.799
Roman appointed governors, called procurators, administer Judea with varying degrees of competence and corruption.
00:19:15.359 --> 00:19:18.960
Some are reasonable, some are catastrophically bad.
00:19:19.359 --> 00:19:24.319
And the one who finally lights the match is a man named Gesius Flores.
00:19:25.599 --> 00:19:28.480
Let me take you to the moment that the fuse lit.
00:19:31.599 --> 00:19:35.759
It is the year 66 CE in Jerusalem.
00:19:37.039 --> 00:19:39.519
Gesius Flores has a problem.
00:19:39.920 --> 00:19:43.920
He owes money to the people in Rome who helped him get this appointment.
00:19:44.160 --> 00:19:50.160
And the province of Judea isn't generating enough revenue to cover his debts and his lifestyle.
00:19:50.559 --> 00:19:54.720
So he does something that previous procurators knew better than to do.
00:19:55.039 --> 00:20:00.000
He walks into the temple treasury and takes 17 talents of silver.
00:20:00.240 --> 00:20:01.200
Just takes it.
00:20:01.519 --> 00:20:03.839
Claims it's owed to the emperor.
00:20:04.880 --> 00:20:08.880
17 talents is roughly the annual income of a small city.
00:20:09.039 --> 00:20:11.519
And the temple treasury is sacred.
00:20:11.759 --> 00:20:15.039
These are donations from Jews from across the Roman Empire.
00:20:15.279 --> 00:20:16.799
Money given to God.
00:20:17.279 --> 00:20:21.519
Flores hasn't robbed the bank, he's robbed God's house.
00:20:22.799 --> 00:20:25.279
The reaction is immediate.
00:20:25.599 --> 00:20:27.759
Protests erupt in Jerusalem.
00:20:28.000 --> 00:20:34.720
Some young men pass baskets through the crowds, mocking Flores by collecting small coins for the poor procurator.
00:20:35.200 --> 00:20:36.480
It's sarcastic.
00:20:36.640 --> 00:20:37.599
It's funny.
00:20:37.839 --> 00:20:41.839
But it's also, from a Roman perspective, it's additional.
00:20:45.200 --> 00:20:49.599
Flores responds by unleashing his soldiers on the upper marketplace.
00:20:50.000 --> 00:20:54.640
They kill approximately 3,600 people in a single afternoon.
00:20:54.880 --> 00:20:57.119
Men, women, children.
00:20:57.359 --> 00:20:59.839
Some of the dead are Roman citizens.
00:21:00.160 --> 00:21:05.440
Jews who hold Roman citizenship, which is supposed to guarantee them legal protection.
00:21:06.160 --> 00:21:09.440
Florist has them plugged and crucified anyway.
00:21:11.920 --> 00:21:14.480
The violence itself is familiar.
00:21:14.880 --> 00:21:18.160
Rome does terrible things to subject people's regulations.
00:21:18.640 --> 00:21:20.720
What's new is the exposure.
00:21:21.039 --> 00:21:28.400
Jewish moderates who've argued for decades that working within the Roman system is the only viable path suddenly have nothing to point to.
00:21:28.880 --> 00:21:33.039
The system has killed 3,600 people for a joke about a thief.
00:21:33.920 --> 00:21:37.920
The fiction that accommodation can hold has been split fair.
00:21:39.279 --> 00:21:42.480
For the next few months, the data explodes.
00:21:42.720 --> 00:21:47.599
Rebel factions, sellers, echarias, seize Jerusalem.
00:21:47.759 --> 00:21:51.599
The Temple Aristocracy tries to maintain orders and fails.
00:21:52.079 --> 00:21:58.000
The Roman garrison in the Antonia Fortress, right next to the temple, is overwhelmed and slaughtered.
00:21:58.160 --> 00:22:04.160
And when Stestia's gallows, The governor of Syria marches south with a full legion to restore order.
00:22:04.559 --> 00:22:11.839
Jewish rebels ambush him in the pass in Beth Horan and hand Rome one of his most shocking military defeats in his history.
00:22:12.160 --> 00:22:17.039
An entire legion is routed, the Eagle Standard is captured.
00:22:19.440 --> 00:22:24.000
For a brief, intoxicating moment, Judea is freed.
00:22:24.240 --> 00:22:28.880
The rebels control Jerusalem, the temple, and most of the countryside.
00:22:29.200 --> 00:22:30.799
They made their own coins.
00:22:31.440 --> 00:22:33.359
Year one of the freedom of Israel.
00:22:34.000 --> 00:22:36.799
Establish a government organize militias.
00:22:37.920 --> 00:22:42.160
For the first time in over a century, the Jews governed their own land.
00:22:43.599 --> 00:22:46.400
But here's what the rebels don't fully reckon with.
00:22:47.119 --> 00:22:56.000
The republic fell, the emperors were assassinated, civil wars tore the empire apart, and still Rome won its wars.
00:22:56.319 --> 00:23:02.319
The machine was bigger than any individual, any setback, any temporary defeat.
00:23:02.799 --> 00:23:06.480
Rome absorbs losses that would destroy any other state.
00:23:10.079 --> 00:23:14.640
Rome does not lose, not permanently, not ever.
00:23:15.039 --> 00:23:18.160
And that's exactly what's about to happen.
00:23:23.599 --> 00:23:37.839
In February of 67 CE, Emperor Nero gives the Judean command to a general named Vespasian, a competent, unflashy career soldier who has the virtue of being good at his job without being politically threatening.
00:23:38.160 --> 00:23:49.359
Vespatian brings his son Titus and three full legions, 60,000 soldiers plus auxiliaries, the largest army assembled for a single campaign in a generation.
00:23:51.599 --> 00:23:53.440
Vespation doesn't rush.
00:23:53.599 --> 00:23:57.359
This is what makes Rome so lethal: their patience.
00:23:57.599 --> 00:24:03.440
Where the rebels are passionate, improvised, fractious, Rome is methodical.
00:24:03.839 --> 00:24:12.240
Vespacian begins in Galilee, the northern region, and works its way south, town by town, fortress by fortress.
00:24:12.480 --> 00:24:14.240
Each conquest is thorough.
00:24:14.480 --> 00:24:17.680
Each resistance is crushed with overwhelming force.
00:24:17.920 --> 00:24:21.279
Each example is said with calculated brutality.
00:24:22.000 --> 00:24:29.119
Let me take you to one of these sieges, because it tells you everything about what Jerusalem is eventually going to face.
00:24:43.839 --> 00:24:47.839
Defended by a Jewish commander named Josef Ben Matiziahu.
00:24:48.400 --> 00:24:50.559
He's organized the defense as well.
00:24:50.880 --> 00:24:55.680
The walls hold for 47 days against everything the spatian throws at them.
00:24:55.920 --> 00:25:00.000
Roman engineers build ramps, the defenders pour boiling oil.
00:25:00.319 --> 00:25:05.039
Romans bring up siege towers, the defenders raise the walls higher overnight.
00:25:05.279 --> 00:25:08.799
It's stubborn, creative, and brave resistant.
00:25:09.200 --> 00:25:12.000
And yet, it doesn't matter.
00:25:12.960 --> 00:25:17.839
After 47 days, a deserter tells the Romans about a gap in the night watch.
00:25:18.079 --> 00:25:23.119
Roman soldiers scale the walls in darkness, and the town falls in hours.
00:25:23.519 --> 00:25:29.039
The spatian orders the entire male population killed and the women and children enslaved.
00:25:29.440 --> 00:25:31.039
40,000 people.
00:25:31.839 --> 00:25:34.160
Then the town is razed.
00:25:34.960 --> 00:25:37.039
And Joseph ben Matiziahu?
00:25:37.599 --> 00:25:38.799
Well he survives.
00:25:39.039 --> 00:25:43.119
He hides in a cave with 40 other fighters who make his suicide pact.
00:25:43.279 --> 00:25:46.400
They'll kill each other rather than surrender to Rome.
00:25:46.640 --> 00:25:52.880
But when it comes down to the last two men, Yosef convinces the other survivors to surrender with him.
00:25:53.119 --> 00:26:04.160
He's then brought before Vespasian, and in a moment of extraordinary audacity, he tells the Roman general that God has revealed to him that Vespasian will become emperor.
00:26:05.119 --> 00:26:13.119
Two years later, when Vespasian does become emperor in the upheaval following Nero's suicide, he remembers the Jewish prisoner's prophecy.
00:26:13.359 --> 00:26:20.319
Joseph Ben Matizyhu is freed, given Roman citizenship, and adopts the family name of his patron.
00:26:20.640 --> 00:26:30.799
He becomes Titus Flavius Josephus, the historian whose account of these events is one of the few surviving records we have.
00:26:35.920 --> 00:26:43.759
By the spring of 70 CE, the Spatian is Emperor of Rome, and his son Titus has taken command of the Judean campaign.
00:26:44.240 --> 00:26:45.759
Galilee is conquered.
00:26:46.000 --> 00:26:52.960
The countryside is pacified, every other center of resistance has fallen, only Jerusalem remains.
00:27:02.240 --> 00:27:05.839
Three rival Jewish factions control different parts of the city.
00:27:06.319 --> 00:27:10.319
John of Giscala holds the Temple Mount with his Sellot forces.
00:27:10.559 --> 00:27:15.680
Simon Bargiora controls the upper city with a mixed army of rebels and freed slaves.
00:27:15.839 --> 00:27:21.599
And Eliasar Ben Simon holds the inner temple itself with a smaller Sellot faction.
00:27:22.000 --> 00:27:25.599
These groups hate each other almost as much as they hate the Romans.
00:27:25.839 --> 00:27:31.519
They fight in the streets, they burn each other's food supplies, they assassinate each other's leaders.
00:27:32.400 --> 00:27:38.559
Let me take you inside those walls for a moment, because this internal catastrophe matters enormously.
00:27:40.880 --> 00:27:43.440
It is after dark in the upper city.
00:27:43.680 --> 00:27:51.839
Two groups of fighters, one loyal to John of Gascala, the other to Simon Bargiora, have encountered each other near the granary.
00:27:52.240 --> 00:27:55.680
The granary holds enough wheat to feed the city for months.
00:27:55.920 --> 00:27:57.599
Both sides claim it.
00:27:58.079 --> 00:28:06.160
The argument becomes a skirmish, swords are drawn, someone knocks over a torch, and the granary catches on fire.
00:28:06.640 --> 00:28:11.599
By morning, one of Jerusalem's largest food stores has been reduced to ash.
00:28:11.920 --> 00:28:18.240
Not because the Romans burned it, because Jewish factions fighting over who gets control of it burned it themselves.
00:28:18.720 --> 00:28:27.440
Josephus claims, and other sources partially corroborate, that the factional fighting destroyed enough food to have sustained the city for years.
00:28:27.759 --> 00:28:33.119
The famine that will kill tens of thousands during the siege isn't entirely Rome's doing.
00:28:33.440 --> 00:28:37.039
Jerusalem's defenders contributed to their own starvation.
00:28:39.279 --> 00:28:46.400
This doesn't absolve Rome for what comes next, but it does reveal something that recurs across his entire story.
00:28:46.720 --> 00:29:01.839
The revolts against Rome, the politics of the British Mandate, in Palestinian factionalism between Fatah and Hamas, internal divisions in the face of external threat, the inability to unify, even when survival depends on it.
00:29:02.079 --> 00:29:04.000
The pattern starts here.
00:29:07.759 --> 00:29:14.319
Titus arrives with four legions outside Jerusalem's North Wall in April 14th of 70 CE.
00:29:15.279 --> 00:29:19.519
The 5th, the 10th, the 12th, and the 15th.
00:29:19.759 --> 00:29:24.640
Roughly 80,000 soldiers, plus thousands of auxiliaries and camp followers.
00:29:24.880 --> 00:29:27.440
They surround the city on three sides.
00:29:27.680 --> 00:29:32.799
The fourth side is the Kidron Valley, so steep it functions as a natural wall.
00:29:34.400 --> 00:29:41.759
For the population trapped inside, swollen to perhaps a million people because pilgrims who came for Passover can't leave.
00:29:41.920 --> 00:29:46.559
The sight of the Roman camps on every hilltop must have been paralyzing.
00:29:47.200 --> 00:29:50.480
And yet, the factional fighting does not stop.
00:29:51.039 --> 00:29:57.680
John and Simon continue their civil war inside the walls, while Titus builds siege ramps outside of them.
00:29:58.240 --> 00:30:10.720
It takes the first Roman assault on the outer wall and the Roman battering ramps physically shaking the stones beneath their feet before the rival factions declare a temporary truce and turn to face the actual enemy.
00:30:12.000 --> 00:30:14.480
The siege lasts five months.
00:30:14.720 --> 00:30:17.839
The Romans breach the outer walls in 15 days.
00:30:18.079 --> 00:30:25.519
The defenders are fighting with the desperation of people who know there will be no surrender turns, no mercy, and no negotiation.
00:30:26.079 --> 00:30:29.119
Street by street, the Romans push deeper.
00:30:29.359 --> 00:30:38.079
The defenders fall back to the Temple Mount, the most heavily fortified position in the city, with walls that have stood for centuries.
00:30:38.319 --> 00:30:42.400
And during those five months, the famine does its work.
00:30:45.039 --> 00:30:51.440
Let me take you to a scene that Josephus describes in detail so specific it haunts the page.
00:30:54.319 --> 00:31:00.480
A woman named Mary from the town of Bethezuba has come to Jerusalem as a refugee.
00:31:00.720 --> 00:31:04.720
She's wealthy, or was wealthy before the war took everything.
00:31:04.960 --> 00:31:09.279
She brought provisions, but the factional fighters confiscated them.
00:31:09.519 --> 00:31:13.200
Every time she finds food, armed men break in and take it.
00:31:13.359 --> 00:31:19.359
She's been surviving on scraps, leather, grass, anything that can be swallowed.
00:31:19.599 --> 00:31:21.279
She has an infant son.
00:31:23.440 --> 00:31:31.039
What I'm about to describe is one of the most disturbing passages in ancient literature, and Josephus recorded this account for a reason.
00:31:31.279 --> 00:31:36.240
Even if his reasons were Roman propaganda, the suffering behind it was real.
00:31:36.640 --> 00:31:38.960
I'm going to tell you what he wrote.
00:31:39.680 --> 00:31:52.480
Josephus describes Mary, half mad with hunger, looking at her child and saying, Poor infant, in war, famine, and sedition, for whom shall I preserve thee?
00:31:53.119 --> 00:31:54.640
She kills her son.
00:31:54.799 --> 00:31:56.240
She roasts the body.
00:31:56.480 --> 00:31:59.359
She eats half of it and conceals the other half.
00:32:00.400 --> 00:32:06.720
The smell of the cooked meat draws the factional fighters, the same men who've been stealing the food for months.
00:32:06.960 --> 00:32:12.000
They break down her door, swords drawn, demanding she share whatever she's hiding.
00:32:12.319 --> 00:32:15.599
Mary pulls back the cloth, covering what remains.
00:32:16.240 --> 00:32:19.759
Come eat, she tells him, for I have eaten also.
00:32:20.240 --> 00:32:24.480
Do not pretend to be more tender than a woman, or more compassionate than a mother.
00:32:26.319 --> 00:32:37.519
The fighters, men who have killed without hesitation, who have burned their own city grain stores, who have waged civil war in the shadows of Roman siege ramps, flee the house in horror.
00:32:37.839 --> 00:32:41.359
Josephus says the whole city trembles when word spreads.
00:32:41.599 --> 00:32:51.039
Even Titus, when he hears of it, reportedly invokes the gods as his witness, saying he offered peace and that this is the defender's doing.
00:32:55.039 --> 00:32:59.920
Josephus records this to Serverum, to say, look at what these people became.
00:33:00.240 --> 00:33:01.839
They brought this on themselves.
00:33:02.160 --> 00:33:10.400
The account is designed to justify the destruction that follows, to shift moral responsibility from the besieging army to the besieged population.
00:33:10.880 --> 00:33:18.240
But what Josephus is actually documented, whether he intends to or not, is what siege warfare does to human beings.
00:33:18.559 --> 00:33:32.079
What it did here, what it will do in Leningrad, Sarajevo, what it does every time an army decides that starvation is a legitimate weapon, the horror tells you about the besiegers' cruelty, not the defender's character.
00:33:33.039 --> 00:33:38.160
By all this, the dead are piling so high inside the walls that the living can't bury them.
00:33:38.559 --> 00:33:41.279
Bodies are thrown over the wall into the valleys below.
00:33:42.160 --> 00:33:50.960
Titus, riding around the city, reportedly sees ravines filled with corpses and raises his hands to God, saying, This isn't his doing.
00:33:51.599 --> 00:33:54.799
It is, of course, entirely his doing.
00:33:58.799 --> 00:34:00.799
We are back where we started.
00:34:01.119 --> 00:34:02.799
The temple is burning.
00:34:03.039 --> 00:34:08.400
The final assault on the Temple Mount takes weeks of preparation and hours of actual combat.
00:34:08.880 --> 00:34:12.159
Roman engineers build massive ramps against the outer walls.
00:34:12.400 --> 00:34:21.760
The defenders pour down everything they have: arrows, stones, boiling oil, their own bodies thrown against the scaling ladders and suicidal counterattacks.
00:34:22.000 --> 00:34:23.760
But the math is relentless.
00:34:24.079 --> 00:34:27.840
Rome has more men, more resources, and more time.
00:34:28.880 --> 00:34:35.760
When the Romans finally breach the walls of the temple complex, the fighting becomes hand to hand in the courtyards and colonnades.
00:34:36.239 --> 00:34:41.519
Roman soldiers, who had been losing comrades to this siege for months, are beyond discipline.
00:34:41.760 --> 00:34:43.679
They kill everyone they find.
00:34:44.480 --> 00:34:51.519
Justifus describes the blood pulling in the temple for so deep that it extinguishes fires as it flows downhill.
00:34:52.880 --> 00:34:54.239
And then the fire.
00:34:54.559 --> 00:34:58.880
Whether ordered by Titus or started by his soldiers doesn't ultimately matter.
00:34:59.119 --> 00:35:03.679
The temple burns, and with it burns, the center of Jewish civilization.
00:35:05.599 --> 00:35:08.639
Here's what you need to understand about what was lost.
00:35:09.039 --> 00:35:14.480
The temple was the only place on earth where certain essential religious functions could be performed.
00:35:14.719 --> 00:35:28.639
The daily sacrifices, the atonement rituals on young Kimpoor, when the high priest entered the Holy of Holies, the one room where God's presence was believed to physically dwell, and ask forgiveness for the sins of the entire nation.
00:35:29.199 --> 00:35:41.039
The system of purity, of pilgrimage, of religious law that organized every aspect of Jewish life, all of it anchored to this one building, this one location, this one set of stones.
00:35:42.239 --> 00:35:46.480
When it burned, the entire operating system of Jewish religion crashed.
00:35:48.880 --> 00:35:51.039
Sacrifices could not be performed.
00:35:51.360 --> 00:35:58.079
The relationship between God and Israel, as it had been understood and maintained for thousands of years, was broken.
00:36:03.840 --> 00:36:06.400
Completely the stones are pried apart.
00:36:07.440 --> 00:36:14.079
Legend says Roman soldiers searching for melted gold at sea between them until the site is reduced to bedrock.
00:36:14.559 --> 00:36:16.800
The tenth legion camps on its ruins.
00:36:17.440 --> 00:36:19.760
The rest of the city fares no better.
00:36:20.079 --> 00:36:22.239
Jerusalem is systematically leveled.
00:36:22.559 --> 00:36:26.639
Josephus claims 1.1 million dead during the siege.
00:36:27.199 --> 00:36:30.000
That number is almost certainly exaggerated.
00:36:30.320 --> 00:36:32.880
It's probably closer to a few hundred thousand.
00:36:33.119 --> 00:36:38.639
But even the conservative estimates describe a slaughter on an almost incomprehensible scale.
00:36:39.360 --> 00:36:44.960
The survivors, roughly ninety-seven thousand, according to Josephus, are enslaved.
00:36:45.360 --> 00:36:50.960
The young and the strong are sent to the mines or die in the arena spectacles across the empire.
00:36:51.360 --> 00:36:56.800
Some are taken to Rome itself, where they're paraded through the streets in Titus's triumph.
00:36:57.360 --> 00:37:07.280
The Ark of Titus, which still stands in the Roman Forum today, depicts Roman soldiers carrying the temple's golden menorah and sacred objects through the streets of Rome.
00:37:07.599 --> 00:37:10.480
If you visit, you can still see the carving.
00:37:10.880 --> 00:37:14.880
Two thousand years later, the death is immortalized in stone.
00:37:16.480 --> 00:37:18.960
The destruction of the temple is a hinge point.
00:37:19.760 --> 00:37:22.320
Everything before it is one story.
00:37:22.559 --> 00:37:25.119
Everything after it is another story.
00:37:25.360 --> 00:37:33.519
Because what happens next is how Jews respond to the loss of their center and create something that has never existed before in human history.
00:37:34.159 --> 00:37:39.920
The people who maintain their identity through memory, text, and an unbroken promise to return.
00:37:40.559 --> 00:37:47.920
No territory, no political power, and no state, just the words, and their refusal to forget.
00:37:53.840 --> 00:37:59.440
In the ruins of the Jewish civilization, an old rabbi does something extraordinary.
00:37:59.920 --> 00:38:02.400
His name is Jochanan Bensakai.
00:38:03.119 --> 00:38:16.000
During the siege of Jerusalem, he reportedly had himself smuggled out of the city in a coffin, faking his own death to get past both the Jewish rebels who killed anyone trying to leave and the Roman forces who killed anyone trying to escape.
00:38:16.400 --> 00:38:22.960
He asked the Romans for permission to establish a small academy at Yabne, a town on the coastal plain.
00:38:23.199 --> 00:38:25.519
It seems like a modest request.
00:38:25.840 --> 00:38:33.119
A school, an old man and his students studying religious law in a quiet town far from the smoke and ruins of Jerusalem.
00:38:33.519 --> 00:38:34.800
The Romans granted.
00:38:35.199 --> 00:38:36.159
Why wouldn't they?
00:38:36.320 --> 00:38:46.719
The temple is destroyed, the priesthood is finished, the political and military power of the Jewish nation is obliterated, an old rabbi running a study group is no threat.
00:38:47.119 --> 00:38:49.360
They could not have been more wrong.
00:38:50.079 --> 00:38:55.280
Because what Ben Sakai does at Yapnit is reinvent Judaism from the ground up.
00:38:55.599 --> 00:38:57.119
The temple is gone?
00:38:57.440 --> 00:38:58.079
Fine.
00:38:58.480 --> 00:39:00.719
Prayer replaces sacrifice.
00:39:01.039 --> 00:39:03.199
The synagogue replaces the temple.
00:39:03.440 --> 00:39:05.599
The rabbi replaces the priest.
00:39:05.840 --> 00:39:14.960
The Torah, the text studied, debated, interpreted, and argued over endlessly, replaces the buildings as the centers of Jewish life.
00:39:17.519 --> 00:39:27.920
A religion built around a specific place, a specific building, a specific set of physical rituals, is quickly transformed into something that can be practiced anywhere on earth.
00:39:28.239 --> 00:39:30.079
You don't need the temple anymore.
00:39:30.239 --> 00:39:36.639
You need ten Jews and a scroll, a portable faith, a nation that you can carry in your head.
00:39:37.280 --> 00:39:56.960
The rabbis at Yavni and their successors accomplish this transformation over the next few generations by creating what becomes the Talmud, an enormous sprawling compendium of legal discussions, ethical debates, storytelling, and theological arguments that essentially replaces the temple as the organizing structure of Jewish life.
00:39:57.280 --> 00:40:01.199
If the temple was the hardware, the Talmud is the software.
00:40:05.360 --> 00:40:08.239
But here's a crucial thing they embed into the system.
00:40:08.639 --> 00:40:16.800
The thing that will matter more than anything else for the next two thousand years they build return into the operating code.
00:40:17.440 --> 00:40:19.840
Every prayer increases Jerusalem.
00:40:20.079 --> 00:40:23.440
Every Passover ends with next year in Jerusalem.
00:40:23.679 --> 00:40:27.599
Every wedding breaks a glass in memory of the temple's destruction.
00:40:27.920 --> 00:40:30.639
Every fast mourns what they lost.
00:40:31.760 --> 00:40:38.239
The message, repeated daily, weekly, yearly, across generations and continents and centuries.
00:40:38.960 --> 00:40:40.239
This is not home.
00:40:40.480 --> 00:40:41.679
We are in exile.
00:40:41.920 --> 00:40:45.199
The real home is there, and we are going back.
00:40:46.559 --> 00:40:57.840
It is not a plan, not yet, not for a very long time, but it is a posture, an orientation, a refusal to fully settle into whatever the exiles take from them.
00:41:05.519 --> 00:41:14.079
Sixty years after the destruction of the temple, the Emperor Hadrian visits the province of Judea in one of his famous tours of the empire.
00:41:14.320 --> 00:41:16.000
Hadrian is a builder.
00:41:16.239 --> 00:41:24.239
He's constructing monuments in cities across the Roman world, and he decides that the ruins of Jerusalem need to be properly developed.
00:41:24.480 --> 00:41:31.920
He announces plans to build a new Roman city on the site, complete with a temple to Jupiter on the Temple Mount.
00:41:32.719 --> 00:41:50.079
For Jews who spend 60 years praying to the temple's restoration, mourning Islaws three times a day, teaching their children that return is a matter of divine promise and not a question of if but when, the idea of a pagan temple on the holiest side in Judaism is beyond provocation.
00:41:50.320 --> 00:42:01.199
Hadrian also reportedly bans circumcision across the empire, not specifically targeting Jews, but effectively criminalizing one of the most fundamental markers of Jewish identity.
00:42:01.440 --> 00:42:10.800
Whether the ban causes a revolt or the revolt causes the ban is debated by historians, but the timing makes it inseparable from what happens next.
00:42:14.559 --> 00:42:19.920
A man named Simon Barkusheba emerges as the leader of a new revolt.
00:42:20.159 --> 00:42:31.519
Rabbi Akiva, the most prominent rabbi of his generation, a towering figure in Jewish learning, declares him the Messiah and gives him the name Barkobah, son of the star.
00:42:32.400 --> 00:42:35.519
This is a serious, organized insurrection.
00:42:35.840 --> 00:42:48.880
Barkobah builds a disciplined army, mints coins declaring year one of the redemption of Israel, and establishes an administration, and for roughly two and a half years, he holds off the Roman Empire.
00:42:49.119 --> 00:42:55.760
Let me take you underground, because this revolt is fought unlike anything Rome has encountered before.
00:42:59.920 --> 00:43:04.719
We are in a key complex, the Judean Hills in the year 133.
00:43:05.840 --> 00:43:14.559
The Judean wilderness is riddled with caves, thousands of them, connected by passages that the local population knows and the Romans don't.
00:43:14.960 --> 00:43:20.719
Barcova's fighters use these caves as bases, supply depots, hospitals, and escape routes.
00:43:20.880 --> 00:43:24.880
They launch guerrilla attacks on Roman positions and vanish underground.
00:43:25.360 --> 00:43:28.559
Roman patrols enter the caves and don't come out.
00:43:29.679 --> 00:43:38.239
Archaeologists have found letters from Barcova in these caves, actual correspondence preserved in the dry desert air for nearly two thousand years.
00:43:38.960 --> 00:43:45.760
The letters reveal a leader who is by turns strategic, demanding, petty, and desperate.
00:43:46.639 --> 00:43:56.719
He orders supplies, disciplines subordinates, arranges for ritual palm fronts to be delivered to his fighters for religious observance even in the middle of a war.
00:43:57.199 --> 00:44:02.079
The mundane details make him real in a way that just Jeepus' grand narratives don't.
00:44:02.960 --> 00:44:06.639
The letters also reveal what the rebels are fighting for.
00:44:07.119 --> 00:44:13.039
One reads From Simon Barkosheva to the men of Ain Gadi.
00:44:14.159 --> 00:44:20.559
You see the eating and drinking from the possession of the house of Israel, and you do not care about your brothers.
00:44:22.400 --> 00:44:28.960
Hadrian sends his best general, Julius Severus, to be called from Britain for this purpose.
00:44:29.679 --> 00:44:35.119
Severus doesn't try to fight the guerrillas on their own terms, he does what Rome always does.
00:44:35.599 --> 00:44:36.880
He takes his time.
00:44:37.119 --> 00:44:38.880
He seals the cavemouths.
00:44:39.039 --> 00:44:41.360
He destroys villages one by one.
00:44:41.519 --> 00:44:43.440
He cuts off water supplies.
00:44:43.599 --> 00:44:46.719
He turns the landscape itself into a weapon.
00:44:49.199 --> 00:44:52.880
The revolt collapses in 135 CE.
00:44:53.280 --> 00:44:56.320
Barcoba dies in his last stronghold at Pitar.
00:44:56.880 --> 00:45:02.320
According to Roman sources, 580,000 Jewish fighters are killed.
00:45:02.559 --> 00:45:05.280
5045 towns are destroyed.
00:45:08.639 --> 00:45:13.920
The numbers, even if exaggerated, describe near total devastation.
00:45:14.880 --> 00:45:21.199
What Hadrian does after the Barcobah revolt is even more devastating than the military defeat itself.
00:45:22.000 --> 00:45:32.239
He renames the province Judea, the name that connects this land to the Jewish people derived from Judah, the biblical tribe, the ancient kingdom, is abolished.
00:45:32.559 --> 00:45:35.599
The province becomes Syria Palestina.
00:45:36.400 --> 00:45:45.199
Palestina from the Philistines, an ancient coastal people who had been enemies of Israel and who had been gone from the region for centuries.
00:45:46.000 --> 00:45:53.760
Hadrian reaches into the Dead Pass for a name specifically chosen to sever the connection between the Jewish people and their land.
00:45:54.480 --> 00:45:57.760
He bans Jews from Jerusalem entirely.
00:45:58.000 --> 00:46:01.679
Any Jew found within city limits is executed.
00:46:01.920 --> 00:46:19.840
The only exception, and this one might be the cruelest part, is one day a year, on the anniversary of the temple's destruction, when Jews are permitted to enter the city to weep on the ruins, to stand at the one remaining wall, what we now call the Western Wall.
00:46:20.480 --> 00:46:22.239
He builds his Roman city.
00:46:22.480 --> 00:46:26.960
He calls it Elia Capitolina, on top of Jerusalem.
00:46:27.199 --> 00:46:30.159
The temple to Jupiter goes up on the Temple Mount.
00:46:30.400 --> 00:46:34.960
Statues of Roman gods stand where the Ark of the Covenant was believed to have rested.
00:46:35.119 --> 00:46:39.920
The streets are laid out in a Roman grid, erasing the ancient geography.
00:46:40.159 --> 00:46:41.840
The message is clear.
00:46:42.159 --> 00:46:43.679
Judea is over.
00:46:44.320 --> 00:46:46.400
The Jewish nation is finished.
00:46:46.639 --> 00:46:52.559
This land belongs to Rome now, and its Jewish part is being physically overwritten.
00:46:55.039 --> 00:46:59.599
Viewed from 135 CE, Hadrian's plans should work.
00:46:59.840 --> 00:47:05.280
The temple is destroyed, the population is devastated, the land is renamed.
00:47:05.440 --> 00:47:09.760
The capital is rebuilt as a pagan city from which Jews are banned.
00:47:09.920 --> 00:47:15.119
Every physical marker of Jewish connection to the land has been eliminated or appropriated.
00:47:15.440 --> 00:47:20.320
By any rational calculation, the Jewish story of this land is over.
00:47:21.360 --> 00:47:27.679
But Hadrian made the same miscalculation that every empire that has tried to destroy the Jews has made.
00:47:27.920 --> 00:47:31.280
From Babylon to the medieval expulsion to the Holocaust.
00:47:31.519 --> 00:47:37.199
He assumed that destroying the physical infrastructure of Jewish life would destroy Jewish identity.
00:47:38.000 --> 00:47:41.360
He did not understand what Ben Sekai had built at Yapne.
00:47:42.159 --> 00:47:52.719
The rabbis had already moved the center of Jewish life from a building to a book, from a place to a practice, from a territory to a text.
00:47:54.320 --> 00:47:59.199
The Zionist movement that begins in the 1880s doesn't emerge from nowhere.
00:47:59.440 --> 00:48:12.400
It emerges from this, from the destruction of the temple, from Hadrian's erasure, from two thousand years of exile, in which Jewish communities maintained, against all odds, the belief that they would return.
00:48:13.280 --> 00:48:22.000
When Theodore Hersell writes the Jewish state in 1896, he is drawn on a longing that is 18 centuries old.
00:48:22.320 --> 00:48:40.079
When Jewish immigrants arrived in the Ottoman Palestine in the 1880s and 1890s, they believed with the full force of religious and historical identity that they're coming home, that this is the land God promised to Abraham, that the exile is finally ending.
00:48:40.960 --> 00:48:50.960
They see themselves as pilgrims, refugees, people who have faced prosecution in every country that hosted them, and who are done waiting for the world to be kind.
00:48:52.639 --> 00:48:56.239
And the land they're returning to has never been empty.
00:48:56.559 --> 00:48:59.679
Not for a single day since the Romans expelled the Jews.
00:49:00.400 --> 00:49:08.480
For nearly two thousand years, other people have lived here, farmed here, built homes and raised children and buried their dead here.
00:49:09.199 --> 00:49:20.320
Arab communities, predominantly Muslim but also Christian, have developed their own deep generational connection to this place, a connection built on presence and continuity.
00:49:20.639 --> 00:49:27.280
The simple, powerful fact that this is where their families have been for as long as anyone can remember.
00:49:28.800 --> 00:49:31.760
Hadrian renamed the land to erase Jewish identity.
00:49:32.159 --> 00:49:39.199
But in the centuries that followed, the name he chose, Palestina Palestine, became real.
00:49:39.440 --> 00:49:42.400
It became what the people living there called home.
00:49:42.639 --> 00:49:47.360
An act of imperial cruelty became over time a genuine identity.
00:49:48.559 --> 00:50:08.320
Jewish longing for return, forged in the flames of 70 CE, maintained across twenty centuries of exile, given desperate urgency by persecution and attempted genocide, Palestinian connection to the land built through centuries of continuous habitation, cultivation, community, and belonging.
00:50:08.719 --> 00:50:15.360
Neither one is invented, neither one is illegitimate, and neither one cancels the other out.
00:50:22.719 --> 00:50:35.039
Next time, on Double Helix, we jump forward nearly 2,000 years to a moment when an exhausted British Foreign Secretary writes 67 words that will reshape the Middle East forever.
00:50:35.360 --> 00:50:49.360
It is November of 1917, and Arthur Balfour has just promised the Zionist movement a national home for the Jewish people in Palestine, without asking the people already living there what they think about it.
00:50:50.000 --> 00:51:11.679
We'll trace how European anti-Semitism drives Jewish immigration, how the collapse of the Ottoman Empire creates a power vacuum filled by British imperial calculations, and how two competing nationalisms, one Jewish, one Arab, collide in a territory governed by a fading empire that has promised the same land to both of them.
00:51:12.320 --> 00:51:15.280
Until then, thank you for listening.
00:51:15.519 --> 00:51:17.280
We will see you soon.
