Speaker 1: Starting to work with you on a Monday afternoon, and a good day to be with you talking about NFL free agency. Here you're joining us on the UMA guest line Jason locanfora of sports Boom dot Com and NFL Insider form of the NFL Network and CBS Sports. Jason, good to have you on, man, Thanks for making the time.
00:00:15
Speaker 2: What's going on, gentlemen, Happy Mike Evans.
00:00:17
Speaker 1: Day, Happy Mike, and maybe happy farewell Trent Williams. Sometimes soon we were talking about the piece you had up. We've been talking. We'll get in to Mike Evans, but Trent Williams. And I said, I don't want, as a forty nine er fan, want to live in a world without Trent. But it doesn't sound like they're close to a an agreement, and he doesn't play without guaranteed money.
00:00:33
Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, look, everything I've heard throughout today is that he's pretty stuck in and he feels like he's got a lot of leverage here and he's loved his time in San Francisco, but uh, you know, nothing's forever. And this is a guy who, aged thirty seven or not, has done things that do tackles in this league have done and look, the reality is, however, the NFL wants to market. It's run up to free agency. People start talking at the combine and this situation's been sort of brewing or festering for a while, and their teams and teams with championship pedigrees that would counce on him if he's available. So we'll see deadline's pro action and you know, maybe the forty nine ers can get something done here in the next twenty four hours or so. But the initial offer, as I heard it was a BS two year deal. Well, so we'll see. We'll see what kind of guaranteed money gets on the table.
00:01:27
Speaker 1: It's interesting because we've talked a lot about the forty nine ers kind of hitting a reset, and they sort of had to after the twenty twenty three Super Bowl run and the injuries a couple of years ago. But it was a lot of new faces this year that had eleven draft picks. I think they used all of them themselves in the last draft. Do you see the forty nine ers right now as a team still pushing for the Super Bowl window or are they still resetting you think financially because the Mike Evans signing sort of goes away from that youth movement. Yet Frent Williams is kind of on the in between.
00:01:54
Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, look that the guts, the DNA of that team is changing a little bit. There's there's no two ways about it. Guys who were thought of as emotional leaders, physical leaders, you know, the DeVos and all that, like in the Trent word to lead too. It would be hard not to categorize this as something of a reset. But I don't think it's a rebuild, you know, I don't think that that they're looking at it saying what is us or we can't compete? They feel like they've got as smart of a coaching staff as anybody in the league. They obviously think very highly of that quarterback and they're paying them as such. And you know, look at the defense. There's they've they've got to fix some things on that side of the ball. No matter what, I imagine there'll be a fair amount of draft capital that's put into that. But uh, look, windows probably were gonna say windows closing or whatever. Team's identities do change, and the forty nine ers, as they were thought of during their previous Super Bowl runs, there's fewer and fewer of those guys still around in critical positions, and some of the ones who are are unfortunately dealing with injury situations.
00:03:02
Speaker 3: Jason did Laramie Tunsul's two years, sixty million dollars deal today with the Commanders kind of set the bar for what Tren is looking for.
00:03:09
Speaker 2: How could it not right? I mean, I how could it not? Absolutely? And I think the fact that you know, the Packers left tackle hasn't signed yet either, that's the guy who I think is going to tail in after Trent Williams. So it's not that there's all there was that is most interested in him was people. No, no, no, there's interesting But a lot of those same teams would rather get two years of Trent Williams service than you know, four years of of that kid. So yes, all these things are intrinsically intertwined, and that was good news for Trent Williams camp.
00:03:40
Speaker 1: We were talking about Jason lackinfoory here on the UMA jessline. What does value for him look like on the trade market, Like they're not gonna cut him. Teams want him, and I think they would make a move to get him, and knowing they'd have to pay him.
00:03:49
Speaker 2: But what was value.
00:03:51
Speaker 1: I think it looked like for him now.
00:03:53
Speaker 2: I mean, he's an elite player. He's defied father time and what he's been able to do after the spinal next situation, wherever you want to call it. In Washington, I think you do pretty well, guys. I mean I think it's a two, you know, I think you can hold somebody out for two and something else. If it is let's say the Kansas City Chiefs, that's, you know, for them, a higher two than normal, but not it's obviously not a top ten pick. Yeah, I think you get high date two value plus more if you know, based on how many games he's able to play, et cetera.
00:04:35
Speaker 3: Talking to Jason lockefora on the UMA guest line, so you said the Niners offered him kind of a BS deal, and so at this point the Niners just see his age and see kind of a diminishing player. Or is it just getting old for them at this point where they don't want to have to go every single time to an offseason negotiation with Trent.
00:04:52
Speaker 2: Well, I would think think age thirty seven, I think this is the last one, right, I mean, like I played till he's forty three, like Aaron Rodgers. I just looking on in a bit of a of a of a situation. They are changing their spots to some degree, and they're also weighing draft capital and what's available in this draft. And are you going to find a Trent Williams. No, but look they have they know his medicals and they know his body better than anybody else. So I mean there may be trepidation that, you know, the guillotine is closer than maybe Trent would think, or what have you. I can only speculate as to that. But the fact that it's reached this point is I think fairy telling.
00:05:33
Speaker 1: Yeah, it seems so Reached's quite a lot in forty Diners negotiations. Talking to Jason lenkinfor on the Uma guest line. The name we were looking at for the forty nine ers as we aired free agency, and this window was where Matt Jones could potentially land. A lot of those spots have filled up. We check the Vikings, Miguo Kyler Atlanta with Tua Malik Willis goers to Miami, Pittsburgh still kind of waiting on Rogers, I guess. But have you heard anything on Matt Jones?
00:05:56
Speaker 2: No, not a lot, And I think they they like having Matt Jones there and they you know, they got mac Jones at a great price. And there are some teams that like mac Jones, but I think you're also not bringing Tol Sanahan with you. You're not bringing that offense with you. And like, how many of the teams that like mac Jones think they're winning a super Bowl with them this year? You know they need him to put them over the top. Now, a lot of these deficient teams at the quarterback position are looking more at the long off. So it's like, are we going to trade maybe even over trade draft capital to pry him away from the team that really doesn't want to use him because he's valuable insurance? Or do we just wait from now eleven months, you know what I mean and get them on our terms if whatever other stop gap we get for a couple million bucks doesn't pan out. And I think that's the market force that's probably gonna end up working against them more than anything else. It's like, what is this one extra season of mac Jones control worth versus let these teams draft people. Let these are gonna let these teams do their tours and they're Kyler Murray's and a team that likes mac Jones might be able to get them at their price again eleven months from.
00:07:01
Speaker 3: Them going back to Trim Williams for a second. Jason, what do you think the timeline is for this, because it's a different situation than in previous negotiations with the forty nine ers, where they usually linger into training camp and they can't afford to do that. So do you think we're gonna get to answer this week when it comes to Trent Williams future with the forty nine ers.
00:07:18
Speaker 2: Yeah, I think we will because of where we are in the calendar right now, and not that you can't get you what you want for him until the draft, but I think some of these teams that are looking at him and looking at him as a different beast than everything else may go and do something else in free agency that obviously isn't Trent Williams, but fills that void enough that they're not going to go and pay Trent Williams what he wants. So I would think in the next thirty six hours.
00:07:44
Speaker 1: Talking to Jason lockdown for you here on the UMA guest line, just jumping back into the Mike Williams Mike Evans conversation. Excuse me side with the forty nine ers today thirty two years old, he'll be thirty three by the time the season starts. He played eight games this year due to the clasical injury. Still been an elite receiver when he's healthy, he's on the field. I think it gives the Niners an element of stretching the field that they haven't had. A lot of people here thought that Niners would be in on Alec Pierce. Do you know or get the impression that they were in on Pierce and then pivoted to Evans or was he their top choice?
00:08:13
Speaker 2: Well, look, I think a lot of people were interested in Peers and Pierce. Obviously you're paying for upside there with Evans, you hope you're not paying for you know, two or three years ago that's not coming back. But I think for where they are and with what they've already drafted there, Mike Evans makes a lot more sense. And it's basically, you know, a year to year proposition, and he's a proven commodity. And this guy's got a nose for the end zone. This guy understands down distance situation. This guy's a demon in the red zone. This guy's a demon still all third down. I mean the stretching is the element. Look, I mean the yards per reception has decrease, and that's the reality for wide receivers when they get this many snaps in this many years in their career. But I think it's more about what he intrinsically brings, what you can help bring out of this quarterback. The immediate day one trust factor that's there because he's been such a clutch performer. And I think we'll go out and give him eleven, you know, eleven hundred receiving yards if he stays healthy and he's been really durable throughout his entire career, and I you know, I think he's good for double bitch of touchdowns. And they needed somebody else to help unlock that red zone offense, don't you think, I mean Yehiddle or whatever tight ends replacing channel And then there wasn't you know, there were some splash touchdowns to receivers outside the red zones. But I really feel like the contestant text, you know, power forward boxing out type stuff. You look at what Devonte uh did down the road in La right, and how many how many did he have, right, you know, is that gonna be McCaffrey bang has had every single time? Or can we try to you know, feel that onion back a different way.
00:09:51
Speaker 3: Talking at Jason lockerfora on the UMA guest line. So wide receiver market, there's some already off the list right now. Alec Pierce signs, Wandel Robinson sign as well. What about some other wide receivers that were linked the forty nine ers or playing for the forty nine ers back of the day you got Romeo Dobbs and you got Juwan Jennings. At this point, what kind of contract you think those guys will get?
00:10:11
Speaker 2: I don't think it's Look, I don't I don't think this is a great free agent class. And outside of the guys who are best to breed and sign, you know, right away, I don't like those guys, you know, even the digs, I don't think it's gonna be. I don't think there's gonna be a deal out there that's so much lucrative than everybody else. I think it's more about signing the right situation and trying to get the right incentives in the contract and taking advantage of it there, you know, like does Jacksonville move Thomas and if they do, then does somebody look at that offense? And Liam Cohen and said, you know what, I'm okay do I you know, what is Hunter coming back? What is that going to look like? I'm okay finding my role there? You know, the right scheme, the right play caller, the right quarterback. But I mean, look, of all those guys, I think Dobbs is the one, yeah, who you could maybe dream on the most. But what if Bill Park? So I'll say the greatest ability is availability, right, And that's just that's been a problem.
00:11:05
Speaker 3: Cobour of minutes with Jason lockefora on the Uma guest line. As far as the pass rusher market, we saw Boye Matfe sign with the Commanders, some big time moving over the weekend with Max Crosby going to the Ravens and then Rashaun Gary getting traded the Cowboys this morning. What do you think this does As far as Trey Hendrickson in his market right now, Well.
00:11:25
Speaker 2: Actually, Trey Henderson's looking at the Daniel Hunter move and that's he's going to play off of that. And look, I don't think he's as good as a football player as Daniel Hunter or Max Crosby. I don't think he's as well rounded. I don't think he's a stout against the run, but you get paid for sacks, and this guy was right up there with the best of them the last couple of years. He was healthy. And I think anybody who does their homework on the Cincinnati situation can figure out pretty quickly how much of this was you know, him warning out of Cincinnati and how much of this was his body really being led by injury the last two years. So I think he's going to do quite well. Yeah, I don't. I don't think there's really any doubt about that. Uh. And then yeah, there's certainly going to be a fall off, a fall off from there. And I would also say that Max Crosby at all, like I suspect, I know, he's got what three or four years left on that deal. I suspect that that pot is enraged for him at some point here, especially you know if Slash, when the Ravens are able to figure out the little conundrum they're in with, uh, well it's not a little conundrum. Another another major contract situation with Lamar Jackson.
00:12:32
