00:00:21.000 --> 00:00:30.282
Welcome back to Demystifying DNA, the podcast where we explore the wonders of genetics and their impact on our lives.
00:00:30.282 --> 00:00:35.389
I'm your host, the curious lady, Dr.
00:00:35.389 --> 00:00:36.390
Tiffany Montgomery.
00:00:36.390 --> 00:00:43.987
Scientists and epidemiologists, I study population health and infectious disease.
00:00:43.987 --> 00:01:02.481
I like to make it very clear while I'm not a medical doctor, I am a scientific researcher through and through and I am thrilled to have you join me today as we dive deep into the intricate world of genetics and mental health.
00:01:02.481 --> 00:01:17.784
In this episode, decoding Minds, unraveling the Genetics of Mental Health, will embark on a fascinating journey to understand how our genes shape our mental well-being.
00:01:18.686 --> 00:01:24.174
Joining me today is fellow co-host, mr Tak Williams.
00:01:24.174 --> 00:01:28.885
Some of you have met Tak before on the previous podcast.
00:01:28.885 --> 00:01:34.254
You all really enjoyed our dialogue, so we had to have Tak back.
00:01:34.254 --> 00:01:35.239
Why?
00:01:35.239 --> 00:01:54.566
Because, as I told you, toc is a people expert, father of five, computer IT extraordinaire, guru, mentor, leader, teacher in his community, very involved in the lives of others and shaping young minds.
00:01:54.566 --> 00:02:05.968
Toc is motivational, relatable and an educated person to talk to and because of his love for people we had to have him back right.
00:02:05.968 --> 00:02:07.552
Welcome, Tak.
00:02:08.640 --> 00:02:10.223
Hey, welcome everybody.
00:02:10.223 --> 00:02:14.348
I want to say thank you first and foremost to Dr.
00:02:14.348 --> 00:02:16.290
Montgomery for having me back.
00:02:16.290 --> 00:02:31.873
I'm just as excited as I was when I was first invited to your platform and even more excited because it seems like there were listeners who had some great questions.
00:02:31.873 --> 00:02:38.126
I think the dialogue we had before and that's typical of your platform, your podcast is more of a dialogue.
00:02:38.126 --> 00:02:43.655
It's not like one way you engage the listeners and the listeners respond.
00:02:43.655 --> 00:02:49.231
Just think that that's how growth works, especially in a positive direction.
00:02:50.000 --> 00:02:50.721
Well, thank you, Tak.
00:02:50.721 --> 00:02:56.490
I appreciate that feedback, especially coming from someone who has their own phenomenal podcast.
00:02:56.490 --> 00:03:09.393
Tak and I are working through this because he's a podcast host, I'm a host and so he's working on being a guest, right, so don't steal my show, Tak, but we are so glad that you joined us.
00:03:09.393 --> 00:03:13.162
Tak has his own show, Tak Williams, and he's a great host.
00:03:13.162 --> 00:03:18.590
I'm going to talk about the topic of the next episode of the Top 50.
00:03:18.590 --> 00:03:24.185
Top 50 is not scientific at all, so no competition there.
00:03:24.185 --> 00:03:25.087
But I tell you what?
00:03:25.087 --> 00:03:27.012
Tak just has a dynamic way of looking at things and presenting it.
00:03:27.012 --> 00:03:32.782
So, for today, we're going to be talking about a wide range of mental health topics as it relates to the focus of the topic.
00:03:32.782 --> 00:03:35.745
So we're going to be talking about the focus of the topic.
00:03:35.745 --> 00:03:38.927
So we're going to be talking about the focus of the topic.
00:03:38.927 --> 00:03:54.907
So let's get started, let's talk, let's dive in with Tak for what promises to be an intriguing discussion.
00:03:54.907 --> 00:03:58.572
So, toc, Mr.
00:03:58.572 --> 00:04:00.854
Tak, welcome back, sir.
00:04:02.080 --> 00:04:02.561
Thank you.
00:04:02.561 --> 00:04:04.062
I'm curious.
00:04:04.062 --> 00:04:06.325
I have a question just right off the top.
00:04:06.325 --> 00:04:12.473
I feel like a listener at this point Mental health, genetics.
00:04:12.473 --> 00:04:25.226
From the mental health side, I've been walking around for years, and probably many others have also, and we tend to generalize what things are.
00:04:25.226 --> 00:04:30.226
If someone was to ask me do you know what mental health is?
00:04:30.226 --> 00:04:35.314
That first initial question I would feel confident that I could respond.
00:04:35.314 --> 00:04:45.007
But the moment I begin to think about what my definition would be, I just would hit the brakes and I say hold up, you know like what is that?
00:04:45.007 --> 00:04:52.528
And that's because more people experience mental health versus articulating it, expressing it.
00:04:52.528 --> 00:04:57.464
So I would ask you what is mental health?
00:04:58.797 --> 00:05:05.987
So, Todd, I'm glad you asked, and it's crazy because when you come on, our conversations are so organic.
00:05:05.987 --> 00:05:09.600
It's almost like descriptive, and I promise they're not.
00:05:09.600 --> 00:05:12.762
But that's a great way.
00:05:12.762 --> 00:05:21.184
If I had given somebody a question and said this is how I want you to start my show, that would be it, Because we have to define what it is we're talking about.
00:05:21.184 --> 00:05:24.824
It's a term we hear thrown from left to right.
00:05:24.824 --> 00:05:26.579
It's like what is mental health?
00:05:27.735 --> 00:05:36.870
Mental health refers to a person's emotional, psychological and social well-being.
00:05:36.870 --> 00:05:39.581
It factors all three of those things.
00:05:39.581 --> 00:05:48.334
It involves the individual's ability to handle stress, relate to others and make decisions.
00:05:48.334 --> 00:05:51.562
So you've got three things going into.
00:05:51.562 --> 00:05:55.600
Three things cause and effect at the same time, and that's why it's so complicated.
00:05:56.355 --> 00:06:10.629
Mental health is influenced by a variety of factors, and genetics plays a significant role in shaping an individual's susceptibility to certain mental health conditions.
00:06:10.629 --> 00:06:19.649
Genetics refers to the study of genes and how traits and characteristics are inherited from one generation to the next.
00:06:19.649 --> 00:06:28.269
We reset this definition every time we do this podcast because, like I always say, I'm not expecting anybody heard the previous one.
00:06:28.269 --> 00:06:31.439
We're going to start right here today and I don't want you to feel lost.
00:06:31.439 --> 00:06:38.334
This is not a Marvel episode where you got to go back and understand how Captain America was conceived to get here.
00:06:38.334 --> 00:06:40.482
We're going to help you right where you are.
00:06:40.482 --> 00:06:47.908
Many mental health disorders have a genetic component, meaning that they can run in families.
00:06:47.908 --> 00:06:59.334
Now, genetics alone doesn't determine why someone will develop a mental health disorder, but it can contribute to increase vulnerability.
00:06:59.334 --> 00:07:07.824
You know when we talk about genetics and epigenetics and how these things are expressed, so we have to be mindful of the role that genes play.
00:07:08.776 --> 00:07:56.473
I would like to say that that's probably why I think that many of us experience it instead of articulating it, because what you said is what I think and it's definitely what I experienced, just being a human being, I've seen, I've witnessed and I've also experienced over the years times where, like physical health, you know, I felt good physically, I felt like I could do whatever it was that I needed to to address maybe my weight, to address my metabolism, my diet, and at times that carried over to my mental health, feeling good, you know, having that outwith perspective, feeling positive, just feeling great.
00:07:56.473 --> 00:08:10.107
The energy is there and but I never really thought about it as mental health in and of itself and that's why, you know, your response to my question really helps to clear that up.
00:08:10.107 --> 00:08:11.209
So thanks for that.
00:08:12.536 --> 00:08:12.797
Talk.
00:08:12.797 --> 00:08:23.230
You know it's my pleasure and I just want to understand it and help you understand the relationship between mental health and genetics.
00:08:23.230 --> 00:08:26.944
It covers at least six different parts.
00:08:26.944 --> 00:08:48.929
You've got your genetic predisposition, so you've got the certain genetic factors that increase the likelihood of developing mental health disorders, and these genetic predispositions may involve variations in a specific gene related to brain function, neurotransmitter regulation or even response to stress.
00:08:48.929 --> 00:08:58.609
Heritability, which is the extent to which gene factors contribute to the development or particular of a particular trait or condition.
00:08:58.609 --> 00:09:08.448
Mental health disorders often have a varying degrees of heritability, including the influence of genetics on their occurrence.
00:09:09.455 --> 00:09:14.947
So mental health is a complex interplay between genetics and environmental factors.
00:09:14.947 --> 00:09:16.438
What do we call that?
00:09:16.438 --> 00:09:18.921
Epigenetics.
00:09:18.921 --> 00:09:35.335
While genetics contribute, environmental influence such as stress, trauma, family dynamics and life experiences also play a crucial role in the onset and course of mental health conditions.
00:09:35.335 --> 00:09:38.245
They have a polygenic nature.
00:09:38.245 --> 00:09:41.335
Many mental health disorders are polygenic.
00:09:41.335 --> 00:09:47.008
They involve multiple genes, not one multiple.
00:09:47.008 --> 00:09:59.870
The interaction of numerous genetic variations along with environmental factors contribute to the complexity of understanding and predicting mental health outcomes.
00:09:59.870 --> 00:10:12.669
Again, flat out epigenetics, because epigenetics factors can influence gene expression without altering the underlying DNA sequence.
00:10:12.669 --> 00:10:24.250
Environmental factors such as stress or early life experiences or trauma can modify gene activity, impacting mental health outcomes.
00:10:24.250 --> 00:10:27.884
And then you've got risk and resilience.
00:10:27.884 --> 00:10:39.649
So, just like we talked about infectious diseases playing a role in how resilient you are, how susceptible you are, we've got those same factors with mental health.
00:10:39.649 --> 00:10:47.948
While some genetic factors may increase the risk of mental health disorders, others may contribute to the resilience.
00:10:47.948 --> 00:10:57.519
Protective genetic factors and coping mechanisms can play a role in mitigating the impact of environmental stressors.
00:10:59.581 --> 00:11:09.804
I would like to ask what is the difference between mental health illness and maybe a mental disorder?
00:11:09.804 --> 00:11:26.750
Because I talked to a friend of mine a couple months ago and she told me she was taking some time off from work and I was kind of asking, like you know, what's going on and she said that she had to deal with some mental health issues.
00:11:26.750 --> 00:11:48.023
Now, later on, she explained to me that she had a mental disorder, and I really didn't get into it real deep with her in terms of why or where was the demarcation line, like where did it cross over between it being a mental health issue and now there's a mental disorder?
00:11:48.023 --> 00:12:12.629
But from what I gathered from her, when she was explaining her mental health issues, this was more of her saying what she was going through, what she realized and recognized, and it was sort of like a self-dagnosing of maybe her mood or her energy or her current status on herself, her biofeedback, whatever.
00:12:12.629 --> 00:12:23.229
And then when she went to explain the mental disorder, it was, like you know, she was diagnosed by maybe a professional or a doctor or whoever.
00:12:23.940 --> 00:12:39.354
And so I guess my question is is mental health a general term that's used as an umbrella and then underneath that you'll find mental disorders, or are they separate in and of themselves?
00:12:39.354 --> 00:12:49.309
Because it seems like people that I've been around and myself, when we go to discuss it, we have conversations, it jumps over.
00:12:49.309 --> 00:13:06.229
You know, five minutes into it we're talking about the same subject matter, maybe something like drugs or addiction or different things like that, and now we're talking about what appears to me, or as I understand it, as a mental disorder, even though the conversation was about mental health.
00:13:06.229 --> 00:13:14.708
So if you could just shed some light on that, just add a little color to what the differences are, or where does it break off at?
00:13:15.220 --> 00:13:19.090
So this answer I'm going to give it to you two ways.
00:13:19.090 --> 00:13:29.802
For our science junkie nerds, it's like talking about physiology versus pathology, all right.
00:13:29.802 --> 00:13:41.474
For our non-science nerds, it is like talking about let's go to the science nerd part.
00:13:41.474 --> 00:13:50.682
Mental health is a term that can be overly generalized or overly abused All right.
00:13:50.682 --> 00:13:54.068
So we all have mental health.
00:13:54.068 --> 00:14:02.582
So for my non-science people, it's like saying you have an attitude, all right, everybody has an attitude.
00:14:02.582 --> 00:14:08.687
Somewhere along in our society that's become a negative connotation.
00:14:08.687 --> 00:14:13.363
Somebody said you have an attitude, you automatically get defensive and you want to prove why you don't have attitude.
00:14:13.363 --> 00:14:14.265
But hey, here's the deal.
00:14:14.265 --> 00:14:17.748
Good, bad or neutral, we all have an attitude.
00:14:17.748 --> 00:14:20.725
Okay, attitude is something that everybody has.
00:14:20.725 --> 00:14:23.807
It's the same with mental health.
00:14:24.639 --> 00:14:27.067
Mental health is something that everybody has.
00:14:27.067 --> 00:14:38.568
When it goes wrong or when it doesn't operate in the way that we expect or we can understand, it then becomes a mental health disorder, disease or illness.
00:14:38.568 --> 00:14:50.629
Mental health can be a one-time thing, like a crisis that you're having, or it can be a long-term thing, which is a disorder or illness, or something that happens over time.
00:14:50.629 --> 00:14:55.087
For my science people, physiology is what we all have.
00:14:55.087 --> 00:14:56.370
Everybody has physiology.
00:14:56.370 --> 00:14:58.624
Okay, it's universal.
00:14:58.624 --> 00:15:01.144
Some of us have diseases.
00:15:01.144 --> 00:15:09.614
Some of us have illnesses or ailments or something that doesn't just go the way the textbook says it's supposed to go.
00:15:09.614 --> 00:15:11.686
Your ear is shaped a little funny.
00:15:11.686 --> 00:15:18.682
Maybe you have one hand bigger than the other, or one finger longer than the other, and that's supposed to be symmetrical.
00:15:18.682 --> 00:15:25.142
They can be subtle differences, but that becomes a pathology or something that's not working right.
00:15:25.142 --> 00:15:41.450
So you've got physiology, which everybody has, you've got attitude, which everybody has, and you've got mental health, which everybody has, and then you've got times where these things don't go the way we think they should.
00:15:41.450 --> 00:15:45.688
So mental health and mental health disorders are not the same.
00:15:45.688 --> 00:15:51.451
Mental health refers to your overall well-being, including your thoughts, feelings and behaviors.
00:15:51.451 --> 00:16:03.147
Like we said, right, mental health disorders are diagnosable conditions that affect your mental functioning and cause distress and impairment.
00:16:03.147 --> 00:16:09.572
Everyone has mental health, but not everyone has mental health disorder.
00:16:09.572 --> 00:16:20.506
Now you've got to remember your mental health can change over time, depending on factors, because of all the factors that contribute to your mental health.
00:16:20.506 --> 00:16:29.793
So it's important to understand the complexity of what goes into mental health.
00:16:29.952 --> 00:16:40.368
Okay, now, some of the things that I want to make sure we talk about are the significance of genetic markers and understanding mental resilience.
00:16:40.368 --> 00:16:45.928
Imagine your body has tiny tags called genetic markers.
00:16:45.928 --> 00:16:57.631
These tags are like special codes that health scientists understand why some people are better at bouncing back from tough times, while others may not be right.
00:16:57.631 --> 00:17:09.032
And by studying these tags, scientists can learn how your genes influence our ability to stay strong and positive even when things get hard.
00:17:09.032 --> 00:17:19.902
So, on a scientific level, genetic markers, or specific DNA sequences, are crucial in unraveling the mysteries of mental resilience.
00:17:19.902 --> 00:17:32.585
These markers act as indicators that scientists use to pinpoint genetic variations associated with an individual's ability to withstand and recover from mental challenges.
00:17:32.585 --> 00:17:39.939
Understanding these markers provide us insight into complex genetic factors contributing to resilience.
00:17:41.295 --> 00:17:43.383
Resilience, as we said, is how well you bounce back.
00:17:43.383 --> 00:17:59.954
So, as you gave the example of your friend and you talked about her describing her mental health condition or disorder at that time, it's important to understand that your friend is normal, that we all have things that happen to us that we have to stop and think about.
00:17:59.954 --> 00:18:01.641
How can we cope with these things?
00:18:01.641 --> 00:18:14.806
Our genes are already going to play a role in providing us with how well we can do that, and what we want to work on are activities that help fortify this resilience.
00:18:14.806 --> 00:18:18.221
Sometimes it comes in the form of rest and taking a break.
00:18:18.221 --> 00:18:32.806
Sometimes it's in the form of medication, sometimes it's in the form of talking to people, sometimes it's journal writing, but these are all things that we do, or figure out how to do, to foster our resilience.
00:18:34.894 --> 00:18:47.227
So when people say I just need to break, I just need to shut down for a minute, you know, like a mental reset, a lot of times I'm thinking that that's what they're talking about.
00:18:47.227 --> 00:18:50.541
They're addressing whatever that mental health is.
00:18:50.541 --> 00:19:03.506
They're addressing that, they're taking action, they're doing something that gives them a break, gives them a chance to reset, to step back, give the brain a chance to breathe and then come back at it.
00:19:03.506 --> 00:19:09.523
But is it that the resilience, like you say?
00:19:09.523 --> 00:19:19.387
How do we deal with a situation, how do we respond to a situation that may be stressful for us or causes distress?
00:19:19.387 --> 00:19:23.366
You know it's like how does that process where they talk about?
00:19:23.366 --> 00:19:29.385
You know, anxiety, hanging around too long turns into stress, these types of things.
00:19:29.875 --> 00:19:44.346
So in those early stages of addressing your mental health issues, what coping mechanisms or what strategies or techniques would you say are available for people to seek out?
00:19:44.346 --> 00:19:52.327
They may not have it right now, but what tools or resources and how available might they be?
00:19:52.327 --> 00:19:56.743
If we're starting off at a level of free 99,?
00:19:56.743 --> 00:19:58.346
You know, you just don't have the budget.
00:19:58.346 --> 00:19:59.678
You may not have.
00:19:59.678 --> 00:20:01.683
It's like having insurance.
00:20:01.683 --> 00:20:09.304
A lot of people they're not working for companies that's providing health insurance and they're not getting yearly checkups and they're just not doing it.
00:20:09.304 --> 00:20:24.141
So, for the average Joe or Joan, what are some suggestions that you have that they may have access to, where they can get an idea of some resources and tools they could use to assist them with mental health issues?
00:20:24.997 --> 00:20:33.063
Well, I'm not a mental health provider and P23 Health is not a direct mental health provider either, but there are resources available.
00:20:33.063 --> 00:20:41.482
I would say talk to someone, normalize how you feel, reach out to a person that you could trust, or Google a number that you can call.
00:20:41.482 --> 00:20:43.338
Talk to your doctor.
00:20:43.338 --> 00:20:46.060
There are resources available.
00:20:46.060 --> 00:20:52.527
I think that it's important to understand that whatever you're going through is normal.
00:20:52.527 --> 00:21:02.026
It's normal for you, it's acceptable and there's such a profound connection between genetics and mental resilience.
00:21:02.026 --> 00:21:06.345
That's where P23 can come in and really help you.
00:21:06.345 --> 00:21:17.738
That's where a professional like myself can help you right, because our genes, which are like tiny instructions inside of us, play a big role in how we handle challenges.
00:21:17.738 --> 00:21:20.681
Think of it as having a superpower.
00:21:20.681 --> 00:21:40.546
Some people are naturally good at staying strong in tough situations and scientists now are trying to figure out how our genes are playing a role in this heroism that help us build mental strength and bounce back when life is challenging.
00:21:40.546 --> 00:21:46.846
Genetics is intricately woven into the fabric of mental resilience.
00:21:46.846 --> 00:21:54.759
It involves the study of how our genes influence cognitive processes, emotional response and coping mechanisms.
00:21:54.759 --> 00:22:13.084
The profound connection lies in recognizing the certain genetic factors contributivity and individuals in eight, capacity for resilience influencing their ability to adapt and thrive among life's most challenging of circumstances.
00:22:13.084 --> 00:22:21.000
Now what I can tell you is that we are really pushing the envelope with the latest breakthroughs in mental health research.
00:22:21.000 --> 00:22:25.644
Right now, scientists are like detectives investigating how our minds work.
00:22:25.644 --> 00:22:32.798
Recently, we made exciting discoveries about how our brain function and how to help people feel better mentally.
00:22:32.798 --> 00:22:40.478
It's like finding new pieces to a puzzle that can help us understand and support our mental well-being.
00:22:40.478 --> 00:22:49.617
Contemporary mental health research is akin to an unfolding cycle of breakthroughs and discoveries.
00:22:49.617 --> 00:22:55.186
You want to talk to somebody that is in that field, because it's evolving every day.
00:22:55.186 --> 00:22:56.198
It's changing.
00:22:56.198 --> 00:23:06.409
It's so normal, it's so likely for us to have a mental health breakdown, a temporary crisis.
00:23:06.409 --> 00:23:17.768
Everybody I don't care how strong you are, even me you have those moments where you need to work on your resilience or do things that reaffirm or strengthen that resilience.
00:23:17.768 --> 00:23:21.884
You have to fortify or build where you are.
00:23:21.884 --> 00:23:35.885
This, like myself, the curious one are constantly delving into the intricate workings of the brain, employing advanced technologies and methodologies.
00:23:35.885 --> 00:23:50.548
These breakthroughs involve uncovering novel insights into mental health disorders, treatment options, preventive measures and propelling the understanding of our mind to new heights.
00:23:50.548 --> 00:23:56.306
Recently, there have been several major mental health breakthroughs.
00:23:56.306 --> 00:23:58.097
We're going to talk about a few of them.
00:23:58.097 --> 00:24:03.423
One of them is ketamine, which is a psychedelic.
00:24:03.423 --> 00:24:08.945
It's shown promise for treating depression, anxiety and other mental disorders.
00:24:08.945 --> 00:24:16.627
It works to alter brain activity and connectivity in ways that may enhance mood and cognition.
00:24:16.627 --> 00:24:36.479
Another one is one that P23 Health has really led the way in, and that's pharmacogenetic testing, which can help personalize antidepressant treatment by identifying genetic factors that affect how patients respond to different drugs.
00:24:36.479 --> 00:24:41.578
This may reduce trial and error and improve your outcomes.
00:24:43.330 --> 00:24:54.730
And then the most mainstream way that a lot of people are talking about now is something called artificial intelligence or AI.
00:24:54.730 --> 00:24:56.896
I had a person once say have you heard of AI?
00:24:56.896 --> 00:25:01.880
Ai in this instance is not referring to Allen Iverson.
00:25:01.880 --> 00:25:10.263
It's referring to the help that has contributed to mental health using artificial intelligence.
00:25:10.263 --> 00:25:12.676
So AI is artificial intelligence.
00:25:12.676 --> 00:25:15.173
Several ways we use it.
00:25:15.173 --> 00:25:24.596
We use data from various sources to detect, diagnose and monitor mental health conditions like depression, schizophrenia, anxiety.
00:25:24.596 --> 00:25:33.515
It's used to develop and personalize adaptive interventions that can tailor treatments to individuals' needs and preferences.
00:25:33.515 --> 00:25:51.371
It enhances the accessibility and affordability of mental health services, especially for underserved populations, by providing chatbots, apps, online platforms that give us resources for our mental health.
00:25:51.371 --> 00:26:02.198
And then it also helps in advancing the understanding of the biological, psychological and social factors that influence mental health and well-being.
00:26:04.190 --> 00:26:24.692
So if one were to seek out some assistance, let's say, if they work somewhere, typically they may find it with their employer, but if they're outside of the workforce, you recommend that they just look for some organizations or some free clinics.
00:26:24.692 --> 00:26:28.040
Or what would you say to that person?
00:26:29.069 --> 00:26:36.672
If you have no one that you can talk to, then I would look for an organization or a free clinic.
00:26:36.672 --> 00:26:46.392
If you have one person that you can trust and talk to, I would talk to that person as a first step.
00:26:46.392 --> 00:27:05.262
Depending on your financial situation, you can see an online telehealth provider, a licensed medical provider anywhere from $10 to $100.
00:27:05.262 --> 00:27:09.700
And $100 is more like a monthly membership or yearly membership or that kind of thing.
00:27:09.700 --> 00:27:17.843
P23 Health has providers, but not mental health providers.
00:27:17.843 --> 00:27:27.779
So if you called us or emailed us, we could help you with finding resources based on the area that you live in and the organizations in that area.
00:27:27.779 --> 00:27:41.420
We're really big in giving back, so we have national partners and regional partners that we donate our resources, our time, our money to give back to these partners.
00:27:41.420 --> 00:27:44.596
So we've established connections.
00:27:44.596 --> 00:27:49.861
We have people that we could point you to or that you could call.
00:27:49.861 --> 00:27:56.934
So if you have nobody to call and nobody to talk to and you can't do an online telehealth visit, call us.
00:27:56.934 --> 00:28:06.823
Your initial consultation is free and we can help you with finding resources or programs specific to your area.
00:28:07.029 --> 00:28:15.460
It's too complex to give a general recommendation without me being a mental health provider to say exactly.
00:28:15.660 --> 00:28:18.913
This is the number that you need to dial or this is the person that you need to talk to.
00:28:19.710 --> 00:28:27.976
But the number one thing I could say, just based on good health and being human, is speak up and say something.
00:28:27.976 --> 00:28:39.252
Give yourself a voice, understand that you are normal, be confident enough to share that with somebody, because all you have to do is say something to one person.
00:28:39.252 --> 00:28:57.731
So that would be my advice that I would give as a mother, as a friend, as a sister, as a daughter, as a wife, as a homegirl, to a lot of people that's going to be the message that I would give, because you keep pressing me on that question.
00:28:57.731 --> 00:29:11.116
So I want to make sure that I'm just really, really clear, because we all look to people for guidance and when we're here to name Dr Montgomery, we think, okay, she's a superhero, she's a this, she's a that, she's got to be a mental health provider that can help us.
00:29:11.116 --> 00:29:18.036
And I wish, I wish, I wish but I promise you I can point you to the right direction of some resources and people who can.
00:29:19.269 --> 00:29:21.417
And that's that's exactly what I wanted to hear.
00:29:21.417 --> 00:29:25.461
A lot of people think that they have nowhere to turn to.
00:29:25.461 --> 00:29:35.416
They, they, they wind up on their own island of sorts, and people are sitting right in front of them and they just don't see it.
00:29:35.416 --> 00:29:49.961
And that's why I know from first hand experience that not necessarily mental disorders, because I haven't been diagnosed that I'm aware of of any but definitely mental health.
00:29:49.961 --> 00:29:52.615
I've experienced it.
00:29:52.615 --> 00:30:12.474
I mean just going through different things in life and I was fortunate enough to have somebody close by, somebody I could speak to and wasn't even aware of it, but maybe their empathy, maybe them lending the ear, maybe them pointing me in a direction, I mean that it just helped out.
00:30:12.474 --> 00:30:13.898
It really did.
00:30:13.898 --> 00:30:33.875
So I would have totally agreed that having someone speaking to someone, saying something, is like a first great step, especially if you think you have no one, no where to go, nobody to call, no resources, no tools.
00:30:33.875 --> 00:30:35.558
So I want to say thank you for that.
00:30:37.095 --> 00:30:38.609
You are absolutely welcome.
00:30:38.609 --> 00:30:42.609
It was a delight having you on today's episode.
00:30:42.609 --> 00:30:51.538
The potential impact of genetics on developing strategies for mental health resilience is phenomenal.
00:30:51.538 --> 00:31:00.680
Okay, imagine you have a backpack full of tools and you want to use these tools to help you stay strong and happy.
00:31:00.680 --> 00:31:11.021
We, as scientists, want to fill that backpack with even better tools based on what we learn about our genes.
00:31:11.021 --> 00:31:23.115
This knowledge can help us create smart strategies, like special exercises for our mind to boost our ability to handle challenges and stay resilient.
00:31:23.115 --> 00:31:42.441
In the simplest of terms, we, as scientists, are like explorers, learning about the magical codes inside us, those genetic markers, to understand how our minds work and find ways to make them even stronger and happier.
00:31:42.441 --> 00:31:48.797
Genetics has the potential to shape innovative strategies for enhancing mental resilience.
00:31:48.797 --> 00:32:02.778
As we deepen our understanding of genetic basis of resilience, it opens avenues for developing interventions that target specific genetic factors.
00:32:02.778 --> 00:32:20.036
This might involve interventions such as gene therapies like CRISPR that we talked about, or a number of others, pharmacogenomics and personalized mental health plans based on your genetics.
00:32:20.036 --> 00:32:39.451
The impact lies in empowering individuals with tailored tools and strategies to bolster or boost their mental resilience, based on your unique genetic makeup Essence.
00:32:39.451 --> 00:32:57.156
The journey from genetic markers to mental resilience involves a nuanced exploration of molecular foundations of the mind, offering unprecedented opportunities for advancement in mental health research and care.
