00:00:08.160 --> 00:00:12.640
Hi there, welcome to season four, episode four of our Deeper Podcast.
00:00:12.800 --> 00:00:20.239
In this episode, we're going to ask the question: what does it actually look like to live out a life of genuine love?
00:00:20.399 --> 00:00:24.640
What do communities of people who love each other look like and feel like?
00:00:24.879 --> 00:00:29.280
What does it look like to practically do that with the way I live and the way I speak?
00:00:29.440 --> 00:00:34.880
And what central beliefs are going to steer all of that in the right direction?
00:00:35.200 --> 00:00:38.560
If we can manage that in the next few minutes, then that'll be a minor miracle.
00:00:38.640 --> 00:00:39.679
So let's give it a go.
00:00:39.840 --> 00:00:44.240
So brace, brace, this is activated.
00:00:51.840 --> 00:01:05.200
Father God, you really clearly showed your love for the world in the way that you created the space for us to live in and the way that you came and showed a life of ethical, spiritual, active love.
00:01:05.680 --> 00:01:12.799
Love with a belief that activated things to happen and that the way that you sacrifice yourself for us.
00:01:13.200 --> 00:01:19.280
Would you show us parts of our lives now that maybe don't match up to the way that you want us to live?
00:01:19.599 --> 00:01:21.120
Show us why that is.
00:01:21.359 --> 00:01:29.920
Help us have the courage to put some things down, challenge ourselves and live differently, inspired by the truth that you want to show us.
00:01:30.079 --> 00:01:32.959
And we ask this in the name of Jesus.
00:01:33.280 --> 00:01:33.920
Amen.
00:01:35.280 --> 00:01:38.719
Okay, let's start by reading a passage from the Bible.
00:01:38.799 --> 00:01:48.959
It's uh it's been given the subtitle Love in Action by one translation, uh, and it's near the end of one of Paul's longest letters, uh, called the Lesser to the Romans.
00:01:49.040 --> 00:01:49.680
So here we go.
00:01:49.840 --> 00:01:55.280
If you want to read along, it's Romans chapter 12, verses 9 to 21.
00:01:58.400 --> 00:02:00.959
Love must be sincere.
00:02:01.519 --> 00:02:05.840
Hate what is evil and cling to what is good.
00:02:06.480 --> 00:02:17.360
Be devoted to one another, honor one another above yourselves, never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.
00:02:17.680 --> 00:02:27.280
Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer, share with the Lord's people who are in need, practice hospitality.
00:02:27.840 --> 00:02:32.319
Bless those who persecute you, bless and do not curse.
00:02:32.719 --> 00:02:37.520
Rejoice with those who rejoice and mourn with those who mourn.
00:02:37.680 --> 00:02:39.599
Live in harmony with one another.
00:02:39.840 --> 00:02:44.800
Don't be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position.
00:02:45.039 --> 00:02:50.080
Do not be conceited, don't repay anyone, evil for evil.
00:02:50.319 --> 00:02:54.080
Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone.
00:02:54.240 --> 00:02:59.280
If it's possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.
00:02:59.520 --> 00:03:06.879
So don't take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written, it is mine to revenge.
00:03:07.199 --> 00:03:09.280
I will repay, says the Lord.
00:03:09.520 --> 00:03:14.080
On the contrary, if your enemy is hungry, feed them.
00:03:14.719 --> 00:03:17.919
If they are thirsty, give them something to drink.
00:03:18.159 --> 00:03:22.240
By doing this, you heap burning coals on their heads.
00:03:22.560 --> 00:03:28.479
Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
00:03:36.400 --> 00:03:42.080
Every summer for the last 30 years of my life, I have been involved in helping to run the Port St.
00:03:42.159 --> 00:03:43.199
Mary Beach Mission.
00:03:43.360 --> 00:03:51.520
It is a kids and youth holiday club run in the south of the Isle of Man, set up for fun, for sharing faith, and for building into the team who run it.
00:03:51.680 --> 00:03:53.599
I I absolutely love it.
00:03:53.759 --> 00:03:57.280
It is consistently one of the highlights of my year.
00:03:57.520 --> 00:04:12.879
There's a game that some of us play there called the Psychiatrist Game, probably not the most PC game in the world, but it's a really funny game where one volunteer child or young person pops out of the room and we all decide something that's wrong with all of the rest of us.
00:04:12.960 --> 00:04:14.800
So it's the same thing wrong with everybody.
00:04:14.960 --> 00:04:20.959
And when the doctor comes back into the room, they ask the whole group set questions like what did you do yesterday?
00:04:21.199 --> 00:04:22.079
How are you feeling?
00:04:22.240 --> 00:04:23.920
What would you like to tell me about?
00:04:24.160 --> 00:04:29.839
And gradually, as they listen to the answers from multiple people, they can guess what we think is wrong with us all.
00:04:29.920 --> 00:04:37.759
So a couple examples in one round this year, we all thought we were toddlers, we had to answer a doctor's questions as if we were about three years old.
00:04:37.920 --> 00:04:45.920
Um, in another round of the game, we were hugely afraid of our own names being mentioned, and every time uh your name was mentioned, you had to shriek.
00:04:46.079 --> 00:04:56.000
Um in another round, we all thought we were on the Titanic, and every question made us lean slightly more to the left until we were all like hanging on the floor or or holding on to things.
00:04:56.240 --> 00:05:10.560
At one time we all thought the doctor was totally naked, so when they came back into the room, we we were like all avoiding eye contact with any body parts we might know what to look at, and answering with veiled references to appropriateness and embarrassment.
00:05:10.720 --> 00:05:13.439
It it was absolutely hilarious.
00:05:14.000 --> 00:05:29.519
The point of the game is to get us to see that things we believe really do affect the way we talk, the way we act, they our beliefs affect our attitudes and our fears and the way that we interact with other people.
00:05:29.680 --> 00:05:31.680
I mean that's not really news, is it?
00:05:31.839 --> 00:05:41.199
Um, but that's why is it I ask um that certain things I believe about God and humanity so often don't make their way into my behaviour?
00:05:41.439 --> 00:05:52.240
Why have I got this gap between the things I say I believe in my head, which I think I really do believe, and then the way that I live, which seems to contradict those things?
00:05:52.319 --> 00:05:54.240
So here's an example from me.
00:05:54.399 --> 00:05:58.560
Um I do believe that every person has been made in the image of God.
00:05:58.720 --> 00:06:01.519
We're equally of value and worth.
00:06:01.680 --> 00:06:06.800
We're all so incredibly precious that the king of the universe sacrificed his life for us.
00:06:06.879 --> 00:06:15.199
I mean, it's the same as Jesus running into a burning building to carry me out, knowing that it would cost him his life to save me.
00:06:15.439 --> 00:06:20.319
That's the love and the value that God places on every human being.
00:06:20.800 --> 00:06:25.759
But do I consistently treat every human being the same?
00:06:26.079 --> 00:06:29.839
Do I speak to everyone as if they're the most precious, valued thing on earth?
00:06:30.000 --> 00:06:34.160
Do my emails reflect that when I'm angry that my tumble dryer wasn't fixed on time?
00:06:34.480 --> 00:06:34.800
No.
00:06:35.519 --> 00:06:46.800
So so either uh I I've also got another belief running parallel, which says that I'm entitled to think less of other people when it suits me or if I'm annoyed, or there's just a reality gap.
00:06:46.959 --> 00:06:53.759
Or dare I say it, I'm not sure how much I actually believe what I think I believe.
00:06:54.319 --> 00:07:00.079
This is why people of faith are rightly accused as being hypocrites.
00:07:00.319 --> 00:07:06.480
This is why when I look at my life, there are areas of hypocrisy that I do need to address.
00:07:06.720 --> 00:07:13.360
This is why Jesus consistently spoke directly to religious leaders and told them that they needed to sort it out.
00:07:13.519 --> 00:07:22.160
You know, why why Jesus spoke to the crowds and told them again and again, respect and listen to your religious leaders, but don't copy the hypocrisy.
00:07:23.040 --> 00:07:29.439
Church leaders out there like myself, we need to carry on listening to that message from Jesus.
00:07:29.519 --> 00:07:38.319
We need to be humble enough to carry on being willing for anybody to address the gaps between what we say and what we do.
00:07:38.639 --> 00:07:44.639
The moment that we think we are the finished article is the moment that we become blinded.
00:07:51.279 --> 00:07:57.680
So, if we're thinking about our beliefs shaping our life, there is a great example in the person of Paul the Apostle.
00:07:57.920 --> 00:08:00.480
Apostle just means one who is sent out.
00:08:00.879 --> 00:08:05.279
So Paul started off his life as a religious leader from the first century.
00:08:05.439 --> 00:08:08.240
He was really, really antagonistic to the church.
00:08:08.560 --> 00:08:18.000
He was utterly convinced that Jesus was not who he claimed to be, and so his zeal for the faith that he represented meant him persecuting Christians.
00:08:18.160 --> 00:08:21.600
He was approving of them, being martyred right in front of his eyes.
00:08:21.839 --> 00:08:32.720
On one occasion, he holds all the coats for the people doing the killing, and then he systematically goes from town to town, he's hunting Christians down, finding out where they are, sending them to prison.
00:08:32.879 --> 00:08:37.279
He's got letters so that when he gets to this town called Damascus, he can do exactly that.
00:08:37.440 --> 00:08:55.039
But as he's on the way to this town, on this dusty, isolated road, uh, suddenly he has this vivid, genuine, powerful encounter with Jesus himself, who appears to him in the form of a blazing light and says, Paul, why are you persecuting me like this?
00:08:55.360 --> 00:09:00.320
From that hinge moment in his life, everything changes for him.
00:09:00.879 --> 00:09:04.000
Very quickly, he starts to preach about his own change of attitude.
00:09:04.159 --> 00:09:09.759
He starts talking about who Jesus is, and he moves from church hater to church planter.
00:09:10.399 --> 00:09:17.440
Paul's message is that our behavior flows out of our beliefs, just like his does.
00:09:17.679 --> 00:09:29.360
Our beliefs are like a source of a river, like a spring that comes up out of the out of the ground, and the water that comes out of that source is our words and our actions.
00:09:29.600 --> 00:09:35.120
People are gonna drink from this river, and we want to make sure that it's pure water.
00:09:36.240 --> 00:09:42.080
This is all the way through all the letters that we've got as part of the New Testament that come from Paul.
00:09:42.960 --> 00:09:49.440
Often, when we're trying to change our behaviour, we try to change our habits without changing our belief system.
00:09:50.000 --> 00:10:07.440
My wife Amanda, who is like a cooling balm in my life, and I still count myself more than a little bit lucky that she had a momentary lapse of judgment and said yes to me, she's trying to get me to change some of my eating habits, and she's not doing it by just telling me different things to eat.
00:10:07.600 --> 00:10:16.000
She's educating me about what is in the food that I'm eating and what it's doing to me, both good and bad, and and it's working.
00:10:16.159 --> 00:10:21.440
And as my beliefs about what food does to me change, my eating is changing.
00:10:21.600 --> 00:10:24.799
I found myself in the sweet style at the local supermarket the other day.
00:10:24.879 --> 00:10:31.039
Um I was looking at all the sweets, like a whole row of them, uh, and all I saw was a whole load of chemicals and plastic.
00:10:31.200 --> 00:10:36.000
So keep going, Amanda, if you're listening to this, we are getting there, but that is how it works.
00:10:36.320 --> 00:10:41.679
Change comes because we view things differently, we believe things differently.
00:10:41.759 --> 00:10:46.639
And that circles me back to this passage I read you right at the start.
00:10:46.960 --> 00:10:54.639
Paul's writing to the church in Rome, even though it's not one of the ones that he helped to establish, and he's telling them what love looks like.
00:10:54.799 --> 00:10:59.519
It's on the back of him, carefully shaping their beliefs in the first 11 chapters.
00:10:59.679 --> 00:11:00.960
Romans is massive.
00:11:01.120 --> 00:11:06.080
It's like he's poured all of the thinking that he's got in other letters into one massive letter.
00:11:06.240 --> 00:11:16.000
And he's talked about who humans are, that we were pre-planned before creation, so that God puts us in the right place at the right time for what he wants to do.
00:11:16.240 --> 00:11:24.799
He tells us that that God has stretched out this massive boundary for the course of our lives, these limits and foundations that we won't be able to go past.
00:11:26.080 --> 00:11:38.080
He says that humans are called, meaning that God himself speaks to us individually, calls us out by name, invites us to walk with him alongside him for the rest of our lives.
00:11:38.159 --> 00:11:42.480
Um he says that we're pronounced no longer guilty because of what Jesus did.
00:11:42.720 --> 00:11:48.799
And we literally manifest the presence and the light of God simply as we live.
00:11:48.960 --> 00:11:58.240
And that's if that's not enough, Paul's audience would also already have lived in this very different relationship to nature than we do in our sanitized modern West.
00:11:58.639 --> 00:12:03.200
They saw their lives as integrally linked to the planet they're placed on.
00:12:03.360 --> 00:12:09.919
They would have seen themselves first and foremost as caretakers of planet Earth and shepherds of people.
00:12:10.399 --> 00:12:26.879
But they had also fallen into the same prideful trap that most long-established groups fall into, where their beliefs and their ways of doing things, because they see them as right, it means others are wrong and therefore others are bad.
00:12:27.360 --> 00:12:34.080
It's not just a religious thing, any idealism or any community group can fall into that way of doing things.
00:12:34.399 --> 00:12:36.480
So, how do we love?
00:12:37.279 --> 00:12:40.240
How do we think about other people?
00:12:40.480 --> 00:12:49.840
What does it look like when beliefs make their way into words and actions, and particularly what does that mean about the way that we love.
00:13:16.240 --> 00:13:24.159
If we truly believe that we need to live like Jesus, that he's our model in everything, then for Paul it looks like the things that he's outlined before us.
00:13:24.480 --> 00:13:40.639
If we truly believe that God sees every human on planet Earth, including ourselves, but not at the expense of other people, as precious and holy and wanted and worth dying for, then for Paul, it will look like sincerity and goodness.
00:13:40.960 --> 00:13:45.840
It will look like devoted love, passion to serve, generosity and grace.
00:13:46.080 --> 00:13:49.759
It will look like hospitality, genuine care when people mourn.
00:13:49.840 --> 00:13:55.360
It will look like humility, peace, patience, forgiveness, even to those who stand against us.
00:13:55.600 --> 00:13:57.840
It will look like goodness.
00:13:58.799 --> 00:14:00.159
So here we go.
00:14:07.840 --> 00:14:10.960
I say choose to love, you ask me how.
00:14:12.320 --> 00:14:16.480
Choose to move beyond surface world's smiles.
00:14:16.799 --> 00:14:21.360
Choose to refocus your hatred on only what is ill, never a who.
00:14:22.159 --> 00:14:25.679
Bring on tight to what's good as if your life depended on it.
00:14:25.840 --> 00:14:28.879
Choose to be devoted to one another.
00:14:29.279 --> 00:14:32.799
Lift each other up with respect, your speech and your actions.
00:14:33.200 --> 00:14:35.440
Lift others way above yourselves.
00:14:35.679 --> 00:14:37.440
Choose to develop a fire birth.
00:14:37.840 --> 00:14:40.399
Keep your furnace stoke while actively serving.
00:14:41.120 --> 00:14:43.279
Choose to let hope to keep you with joy.
00:14:43.440 --> 00:14:45.600
Choose to let hardship grow your character.
00:14:45.840 --> 00:14:47.600
Let push you to put on muscle.
00:14:47.679 --> 00:14:50.000
When life needs you to do the heavy lifting.
00:14:50.320 --> 00:14:52.639
Choose to laugh by being faithful in the world.
00:14:52.799 --> 00:15:02.879
Or when you see someone needs to write a move after acting, choose to be the one to do something about it, rather than the one to roll on the next thing.
00:15:03.200 --> 00:15:06.000
Yet faith for being people of afterwards.
00:15:06.080 --> 00:15:11.200
Or when people wish you to move you apart with their words, choose not to be a bit of a.
00:15:36.240 --> 00:15:38.639
Choose the humble task of the order of people.
00:15:40.399 --> 00:15:41.279
Make the choice now.
00:15:41.519 --> 00:15:44.159
You will not repay any of the evil people.
00:15:44.480 --> 00:15:46.799
Instead, choose to do the next right thing.
00:15:46.960 --> 00:15:50.480
Or when you have the end of yourself, choose the next right thing.
00:15:50.720 --> 00:15:52.639
Just one more time.
00:15:53.360 --> 00:15:57.519
If it's possible for the power to depend on you, choose a peace.
00:15:57.759 --> 00:16:01.039
Choose to allow God to bring about his justice.
00:16:01.360 --> 00:16:05.120
While you wait, if your enemy's hungry, choose to feed them.
00:16:05.360 --> 00:16:08.639
Your enemy's thirsty, give them a journey.
00:16:08.960 --> 00:16:10.720
This is the choice to love.
00:16:11.279 --> 00:16:12.879
Choose it ahead of time.
00:16:13.120 --> 00:16:14.879
Choose it moment by moment.
00:16:15.200 --> 00:16:21.279
Do not be overcome by evil, but choose to overcome evil with good.
00:16:21.840 --> 00:16:25.279
Choose to overcome evil, choose with good.
00:00:08.160 --> 00:00:12.640
Hi there, welcome to season four, episode four of our Deeper Podcast.
00:00:12.800 --> 00:00:20.239
In this episode, we're going to ask the question: what does it actually look like to live out a life of genuine love?
00:00:20.399 --> 00:00:24.640
What do communities of people who love each other look like and feel like?
00:00:24.879 --> 00:00:29.280
What does it look like to practically do that with the way I live and the way I speak?
00:00:29.440 --> 00:00:34.880
And what central beliefs are going to steer all of that in the right direction?
00:00:35.200 --> 00:00:38.560
If we can manage that in the next few minutes, then that'll be a minor miracle.
00:00:38.640 --> 00:00:39.679
So let's give it a go.
00:00:39.840 --> 00:00:44.240
So brace, brace, this is activated.
00:00:51.840 --> 00:01:05.200
Father God, you really clearly showed your love for the world in the way that you created the space for us to live in and the way that you came and showed a life of ethical, spiritual, active love.
00:01:05.680 --> 00:01:12.799
Love with a belief that activated things to happen and that the way that you sacrifice yourself for us.
00:01:13.200 --> 00:01:19.280
Would you show us parts of our lives now that maybe don't match up to the way that you want us to live?
00:01:19.599 --> 00:01:21.120
Show us why that is.
00:01:21.359 --> 00:01:29.920
Help us have the courage to put some things down, challenge ourselves and live differently, inspired by the truth that you want to show us.
00:01:30.079 --> 00:01:32.959
And we ask this in the name of Jesus.
00:01:33.280 --> 00:01:33.920
Amen.
00:01:35.280 --> 00:01:38.719
Okay, let's start by reading a passage from the Bible.
00:01:38.799 --> 00:01:48.959
It's uh it's been given the subtitle Love in Action by one translation, uh, and it's near the end of one of Paul's longest letters, uh, called the Lesser to the Romans.
00:01:49.040 --> 00:01:49.680
So here we go.
00:01:49.840 --> 00:01:55.280
If you want to read along, it's Romans chapter 12, verses 9 to 21.
00:01:58.400 --> 00:02:00.959
Love must be sincere.
00:02:01.519 --> 00:02:05.840
Hate what is evil and cling to what is good.
00:02:06.480 --> 00:02:17.360
Be devoted to one another, honor one another above yourselves, never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.
00:02:17.680 --> 00:02:27.280
Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer, share with the Lord's people who are in need, practice hospitality.
00:02:27.840 --> 00:02:32.319
Bless those who persecute you, bless and do not curse.
00:02:32.719 --> 00:02:37.520
Rejoice with those who rejoice and mourn with those who mourn.
00:02:37.680 --> 00:02:39.599
Live in harmony with one another.
00:02:39.840 --> 00:02:44.800
Don't be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position.
00:02:45.039 --> 00:02:50.080
Do not be conceited, don't repay anyone, evil for evil.
00:02:50.319 --> 00:02:54.080
Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone.
00:02:54.240 --> 00:02:59.280
If it's possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.
00:02:59.520 --> 00:03:06.879
So don't take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written, it is mine to revenge.
00:03:07.199 --> 00:03:09.280
I will repay, says the Lord.
00:03:09.520 --> 00:03:14.080
On the contrary, if your enemy is hungry, feed them.
00:03:14.719 --> 00:03:17.919
If they are thirsty, give them something to drink.
00:03:18.159 --> 00:03:22.240
By doing this, you heap burning coals on their heads.
00:03:22.560 --> 00:03:28.479
Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
00:03:36.400 --> 00:03:42.080
Every summer for the last 30 years of my life, I have been involved in helping to run the Port St.
00:03:42.159 --> 00:03:43.199
Mary Beach Mission.
00:03:43.360 --> 00:03:51.520
It is a kids and youth holiday club run in the south of the Isle of Man, set up for fun, for sharing faith, and for building into the team who run it.
00:03:51.680 --> 00:03:53.599
I I absolutely love it.
00:03:53.759 --> 00:03:57.280
It is consistently one of the highlights of my year.
00:03:57.520 --> 00:04:12.879
There's a game that some of us play there called the Psychiatrist Game, probably not the most PC game in the world, but it's a really funny game where one volunteer child or young person pops out of the room and we all decide something that's wrong with all of the rest of us.
00:04:12.960 --> 00:04:14.800
So it's the same thing wrong with everybody.
00:04:14.960 --> 00:04:20.959
And when the doctor comes back into the room, they ask the whole group set questions like what did you do yesterday?
00:04:21.199 --> 00:04:22.079
How are you feeling?
00:04:22.240 --> 00:04:23.920
What would you like to tell me about?
00:04:24.160 --> 00:04:29.839
And gradually, as they listen to the answers from multiple people, they can guess what we think is wrong with us all.
00:04:29.920 --> 00:04:37.759
So a couple examples in one round this year, we all thought we were toddlers, we had to answer a doctor's questions as if we were about three years old.
00:04:37.920 --> 00:04:45.920
Um, in another round of the game, we were hugely afraid of our own names being mentioned, and every time uh your name was mentioned, you had to shriek.
00:04:46.079 --> 00:04:56.000
Um in another round, we all thought we were on the Titanic, and every question made us lean slightly more to the left until we were all like hanging on the floor or or holding on to things.
00:04:56.240 --> 00:05:10.560
At one time we all thought the doctor was totally naked, so when they came back into the room, we we were like all avoiding eye contact with any body parts we might know what to look at, and answering with veiled references to appropriateness and embarrassment.
00:05:10.720 --> 00:05:13.439
It it was absolutely hilarious.
00:05:14.000 --> 00:05:29.519
The point of the game is to get us to see that things we believe really do affect the way we talk, the way we act, they our beliefs affect our attitudes and our fears and the way that we interact with other people.
00:05:29.680 --> 00:05:31.680
I mean that's not really news, is it?
00:05:31.839 --> 00:05:41.199
Um, but that's why is it I ask um that certain things I believe about God and humanity so often don't make their way into my behaviour?
00:05:41.439 --> 00:05:52.240
Why have I got this gap between the things I say I believe in my head, which I think I really do believe, and then the way that I live, which seems to contradict those things?
00:05:52.319 --> 00:05:54.240
So here's an example from me.
00:05:54.399 --> 00:05:58.560
Um I do believe that every person has been made in the image of God.
00:05:58.720 --> 00:06:01.519
We're equally of value and worth.
00:06:01.680 --> 00:06:06.800
We're all so incredibly precious that the king of the universe sacrificed his life for us.
00:06:06.879 --> 00:06:15.199
I mean, it's the same as Jesus running into a burning building to carry me out, knowing that it would cost him his life to save me.
00:06:15.439 --> 00:06:20.319
That's the love and the value that God places on every human being.
00:06:20.800 --> 00:06:25.759
But do I consistently treat every human being the same?
00:06:26.079 --> 00:06:29.839
Do I speak to everyone as if they're the most precious, valued thing on earth?
00:06:30.000 --> 00:06:34.160
Do my emails reflect that when I'm angry that my tumble dryer wasn't fixed on time?
00:06:34.480 --> 00:06:34.800
No.
00:06:35.519 --> 00:06:46.800
So so either uh I I've also got another belief running parallel, which says that I'm entitled to think less of other people when it suits me or if I'm annoyed, or there's just a reality gap.
00:06:46.959 --> 00:06:53.759
Or dare I say it, I'm not sure how much I actually believe what I think I believe.
00:06:54.319 --> 00:07:00.079
This is why people of faith are rightly accused as being hypocrites.
00:07:00.319 --> 00:07:06.480
This is why when I look at my life, there are areas of hypocrisy that I do need to address.
00:07:06.720 --> 00:07:13.360
This is why Jesus consistently spoke directly to religious leaders and told them that they needed to sort it out.
00:07:13.519 --> 00:07:22.160
You know, why why Jesus spoke to the crowds and told them again and again, respect and listen to your religious leaders, but don't copy the hypocrisy.
00:07:23.040 --> 00:07:29.439
Church leaders out there like myself, we need to carry on listening to that message from Jesus.
00:07:29.519 --> 00:07:38.319
We need to be humble enough to carry on being willing for anybody to address the gaps between what we say and what we do.
00:07:38.639 --> 00:07:44.639
The moment that we think we are the finished article is the moment that we become blinded.
00:07:51.279 --> 00:07:57.680
So, if we're thinking about our beliefs shaping our life, there is a great example in the person of Paul the Apostle.
00:07:57.920 --> 00:08:00.480
Apostle just means one who is sent out.
00:08:00.879 --> 00:08:05.279
So Paul started off his life as a religious leader from the first century.
00:08:05.439 --> 00:08:08.240
He was really, really antagonistic to the church.
00:08:08.560 --> 00:08:18.000
He was utterly convinced that Jesus was not who he claimed to be, and so his zeal for the faith that he represented meant him persecuting Christians.
00:08:18.160 --> 00:08:21.600
He was approving of them, being martyred right in front of his eyes.
00:08:21.839 --> 00:08:32.720
On one occasion, he holds all the coats for the people doing the killing, and then he systematically goes from town to town, he's hunting Christians down, finding out where they are, sending them to prison.
00:08:32.879 --> 00:08:37.279
He's got letters so that when he gets to this town called Damascus, he can do exactly that.
00:08:37.440 --> 00:08:55.039
But as he's on the way to this town, on this dusty, isolated road, uh, suddenly he has this vivid, genuine, powerful encounter with Jesus himself, who appears to him in the form of a blazing light and says, Paul, why are you persecuting me like this?
00:08:55.360 --> 00:09:00.320
From that hinge moment in his life, everything changes for him.
00:09:00.879 --> 00:09:04.000
Very quickly, he starts to preach about his own change of attitude.
00:09:04.159 --> 00:09:09.759
He starts talking about who Jesus is, and he moves from church hater to church planter.
00:09:10.399 --> 00:09:17.440
Paul's message is that our behavior flows out of our beliefs, just like his does.
00:09:17.679 --> 00:09:29.360
Our beliefs are like a source of a river, like a spring that comes up out of the out of the ground, and the water that comes out of that source is our words and our actions.
00:09:29.600 --> 00:09:35.120
People are gonna drink from this river, and we want to make sure that it's pure water.
00:09:36.240 --> 00:09:42.080
This is all the way through all the letters that we've got as part of the New Testament that come from Paul.
00:09:42.960 --> 00:09:49.440
Often, when we're trying to change our behaviour, we try to change our habits without changing our belief system.
00:09:50.000 --> 00:10:07.440
My wife Amanda, who is like a cooling balm in my life, and I still count myself more than a little bit lucky that she had a momentary lapse of judgment and said yes to me, she's trying to get me to change some of my eating habits, and she's not doing it by just telling me different things to eat.
00:10:07.600 --> 00:10:16.000
She's educating me about what is in the food that I'm eating and what it's doing to me, both good and bad, and and it's working.
00:10:16.159 --> 00:10:21.440
And as my beliefs about what food does to me change, my eating is changing.
00:10:21.600 --> 00:10:24.799
I found myself in the sweet style at the local supermarket the other day.
00:10:24.879 --> 00:10:31.039
Um I was looking at all the sweets, like a whole row of them, uh, and all I saw was a whole load of chemicals and plastic.
00:10:31.200 --> 00:10:36.000
So keep going, Amanda, if you're listening to this, we are getting there, but that is how it works.
00:10:36.320 --> 00:10:41.679
Change comes because we view things differently, we believe things differently.
00:10:41.759 --> 00:10:46.639
And that circles me back to this passage I read you right at the start.
00:10:46.960 --> 00:10:54.639
Paul's writing to the church in Rome, even though it's not one of the ones that he helped to establish, and he's telling them what love looks like.
00:10:54.799 --> 00:10:59.519
It's on the back of him, carefully shaping their beliefs in the first 11 chapters.
00:10:59.679 --> 00:11:00.960
Romans is massive.
00:11:01.120 --> 00:11:06.080
It's like he's poured all of the thinking that he's got in other letters into one massive letter.
00:11:06.240 --> 00:11:16.000
And he's talked about who humans are, that we were pre-planned before creation, so that God puts us in the right place at the right time for what he wants to do.
00:11:16.240 --> 00:11:24.799
He tells us that that God has stretched out this massive boundary for the course of our lives, these limits and foundations that we won't be able to go past.
00:11:26.080 --> 00:11:38.080
He says that humans are called, meaning that God himself speaks to us individually, calls us out by name, invites us to walk with him alongside him for the rest of our lives.
00:11:38.159 --> 00:11:42.480
Um he says that we're pronounced no longer guilty because of what Jesus did.
00:11:42.720 --> 00:11:48.799
And we literally manifest the presence and the light of God simply as we live.
00:11:48.960 --> 00:11:58.240
And that's if that's not enough, Paul's audience would also already have lived in this very different relationship to nature than we do in our sanitized modern West.
00:11:58.639 --> 00:12:03.200
They saw their lives as integrally linked to the planet they're placed on.
00:12:03.360 --> 00:12:09.919
They would have seen themselves first and foremost as caretakers of planet Earth and shepherds of people.
00:12:10.399 --> 00:12:26.879
But they had also fallen into the same prideful trap that most long-established groups fall into, where their beliefs and their ways of doing things, because they see them as right, it means others are wrong and therefore others are bad.
00:12:27.360 --> 00:12:34.080
It's not just a religious thing, any idealism or any community group can fall into that way of doing things.
00:12:34.399 --> 00:12:36.480
So, how do we love?
00:12:37.279 --> 00:12:40.240
How do we think about other people?
00:12:40.480 --> 00:12:49.840
What does it look like when beliefs make their way into words and actions, and particularly what does that mean about the way that we love.
00:13:16.240 --> 00:13:24.159
If we truly believe that we need to live like Jesus, that he's our model in everything, then for Paul it looks like the things that he's outlined before us.
00:13:24.480 --> 00:13:40.639
If we truly believe that God sees every human on planet Earth, including ourselves, but not at the expense of other people, as precious and holy and wanted and worth dying for, then for Paul, it will look like sincerity and goodness.
00:13:40.960 --> 00:13:45.840
It will look like devoted love, passion to serve, generosity and grace.
00:13:46.080 --> 00:13:49.759
It will look like hospitality, genuine care when people mourn.
00:13:49.840 --> 00:13:55.360
It will look like humility, peace, patience, forgiveness, even to those who stand against us.
00:13:55.600 --> 00:13:57.840
It will look like goodness.
00:13:58.799 --> 00:14:00.159
So here we go.
00:14:07.840 --> 00:14:10.960
I say choose to love, you ask me how.
00:14:12.320 --> 00:14:16.480
Choose to move beyond surface world's smiles.
00:14:16.799 --> 00:14:21.360
Choose to refocus your hatred on only what is ill, never a who.
00:14:22.159 --> 00:14:25.679
Bring on tight to what's good as if your life depended on it.
00:14:25.840 --> 00:14:28.879
Choose to be devoted to one another.
00:14:29.279 --> 00:14:32.799
Lift each other up with respect, your speech and your actions.
00:14:33.200 --> 00:14:35.440
Lift others way above yourselves.
00:14:35.679 --> 00:14:37.440
Choose to develop a fire birth.
00:14:37.840 --> 00:14:40.399
Keep your furnace stoke while actively serving.
00:14:41.120 --> 00:14:43.279
Choose to let hope to keep you with joy.
00:14:43.440 --> 00:14:45.600
Choose to let hardship grow your character.
00:14:45.840 --> 00:14:47.600
Let push you to put on muscle.
00:14:47.679 --> 00:14:50.000
When life needs you to do the heavy lifting.
00:14:50.320 --> 00:14:52.639
Choose to laugh by being faithful in the world.
00:14:52.799 --> 00:15:02.879
Or when you see someone needs to write a move after acting, choose to be the one to do something about it, rather than the one to roll on the next thing.
00:15:03.200 --> 00:15:06.000
Yet faith for being people of afterwards.
00:15:06.080 --> 00:15:11.200
Or when people wish you to move you apart with their words, choose not to be a bit of a.
00:15:36.240 --> 00:15:38.639
Choose the humble task of the order of people.
00:15:40.399 --> 00:15:41.279
Make the choice now.
00:15:41.519 --> 00:15:44.159
You will not repay any of the evil people.
00:15:44.480 --> 00:15:46.799
Instead, choose to do the next right thing.
00:15:46.960 --> 00:15:50.480
Or when you have the end of yourself, choose the next right thing.
00:15:50.720 --> 00:15:52.639
Just one more time.
00:15:53.360 --> 00:15:57.519
If it's possible for the power to depend on you, choose a peace.
00:15:57.759 --> 00:16:01.039
Choose to allow God to bring about his justice.
00:16:01.360 --> 00:16:05.120
While you wait, if your enemy's hungry, choose to feed them.
00:16:05.360 --> 00:16:08.639
Your enemy's thirsty, give them a journey.
00:16:08.960 --> 00:16:10.720
This is the choice to love.
00:16:11.279 --> 00:16:12.879
Choose it ahead of time.
00:16:13.120 --> 00:16:14.879
Choose it moment by moment.
00:16:15.200 --> 00:16:21.279
Do not be overcome by evil, but choose to overcome evil with good.
00:16:21.840 --> 00:16:25.279
Choose to overcome evil, choose with good.
