ABOUT THIS EPISODE
August 9, 2026 - Sunday AM Sermon
In this episode Neal examines 1 Thessalonians 2:1–8 and explores the uneasy tension every Christian faces between seeking the approval of people and seeking the approval of God. Opening with a personal memory about early preaching nerves, the sermon places Apostle Paul’s defense of his integrity at the center and shows how even great preachers wrestle with fear and public opinion.
Using vivid modern and biblical illustrations—including the tragic story of teenager Zachary Nazario who died attempting a viral subway-surfing stunt, Old and New Testament examples (Aaron, Saul, false prophets, John the Baptist, Nathan), and a historical analogy with Chamberlain and Churchill—the speaker demonstrates how social pressure, vanity and desire for acceptance can drive people to excuse error, endorse impurity, or practice deceit.
The message identifies three common motives that push us to please people: the desire for advantage (flattery), greed (material gain), and the pursuit of glory or fame. It then turns to practical counsel from Paul on how to pursue God’s approval instead: be bold (courage to speak truth), be aware (let God examine your heart), be genuine (consistent integrity), be gentle (show compassion while speaking truth), and be sacrificial (invest your life in others).
The episode closes with a pastoral appeal about the priority of God’s approval over fleeting human praise, a brief reminder of what God requires for salvation—believing in Christ, genuine repentance, and baptism—and an invitation for listeners who are struggling to seek help and prayer from their brothers and sisters in Christ.
Topics covered: 1 Thessalonians 2:1–8; preaching and pastoral integrity; cultural pressure, error, impurity, deceit; motives of flattery, greed and glory; practical steps to please God; biblical and contemporary illustrations; invitation to repentance and community support.

00:06.844 --> 00:10.507
I guess if you count the sermon that my dad wrote for me in
00:11.343 --> 00:14.652
1979, the Bible says that
00:14.717 --> 00:18.300
I preached faithfully mimicking his words. The first sermon in
00:18.800 --> 00:20.935
my mind that I ever preached was in 1987.
00:21.883 --> 00:25.321
And even though that was so long ago, I can still remember the nerves that
00:25.821 --> 00:28.513
I felt and how intimidating that occasion was,
00:29.026 --> 00:32.681
that nerves. And my dad had told me that when you get nervous,
00:32.713 --> 00:35.838
you go and you stand and you face a wall and you talk
00:36.338 --> 00:39.268
to yourself and you get your hands and your feet moving so that you get
00:39.768 --> 00:43.596
all that nervous energy out, and it helps. And I thought by the
00:44.096 --> 00:47.539
time that I got to 2026 that all those nerves would be gone, but they're
00:47.603 --> 00:51.130
not. There's a lot of different reasons why a preacher
00:51.630 --> 00:54.383
would feel nerves, and I can't speak for any other preacher but myself,
00:55.154 --> 00:58.959
But there's all that's going on in your mind, and there's the time in which
00:59.007 --> 01:03.022
you're trying to get all of that preached. And there's
01:03.166 --> 01:07.004
making sure that what you say is said in the right spirit and received in
01:07.036 --> 01:10.472
the spirit that it was intended. Sometimes it's a difficult
01:10.972 --> 01:14.743
subject. And sometimes it is knowing that what you have to
01:15.243 --> 01:18.468
say is true to God's Word, and yet it's not what people want to hear.
01:20.106 --> 01:23.666
Hiram did a masterful job in Bible class in painting the picture of the
01:24.166 --> 01:26.970
Apostle Paul as just as human as the rest of us.
01:28.044 --> 01:31.893
And when he faced a congregation and had to speak to them about
01:32.393 --> 01:35.983
some subject that they needed to hear about, he also had those same
01:36.483 --> 01:39.270
feelings. I don't know what it was like for him when he delivered a lesson
01:39.770 --> 01:42.221
out loud, but in, in his interchange with people,
01:43.200 --> 01:46.968
he struggled through that the same as the rest of us. I wonder
01:46.984 --> 01:50.622
if that's what is on Paul's mind when he writes to a church full
01:50.670 --> 01:54.341
of new Christians. And he says, I want you to know that my coming to
01:54.357 --> 01:57.771
you was not in vain. He says,
01:57.947 --> 02:01.329
as we were approved by God to come among you to preach the gospel
02:01.829 --> 02:04.935
of God, we did so with much suffering and affliction in Philippi,
02:06.057 --> 02:10.497
and we did so with much opposition. But he said, but our exhortation
02:10.529 --> 02:13.719
did not come by way of error or impurity,
02:14.697 --> 02:17.888
or in deceit. He said, but as we were approved
02:18.000 --> 02:22.138
by God to be entrusted with the gospel, so we speak, not as pleasing
02:22.154 --> 02:24.992
men, but God who examines the heart.
02:25.842 --> 02:29.322
For you know that we did not come ever with flattering speech or with a
02:29.386 --> 02:33.347
pretext for greed, as God is our witness; nor
02:33.395 --> 02:37.612
do we seek the glory of men, whether yourselves or others;
02:38.686 --> 02:42.198
but as we were entrusted with the gospel, we spoke,
02:42.214 --> 02:45.981
though as apostles we might have used our authority, but we proved
02:46.481 --> 02:49.716
ourselves to be gentle among you, as tender as nursing
02:49.748 --> 02:53.675
mothers with their children. So great was our affection to you that
02:54.175 --> 02:58.036
we determined to impart not just the gospel of God, but our
02:58.084 --> 03:01.017
very lives, because you were so dear to us.
03:01.931 --> 03:04.784
1 Thessalonians 2:1-8.
03:06.003 --> 03:09.032
As he writes to them, I don't know if you can hear the trepidation,
03:09.048 --> 03:12.334
the hesitancy, the concern for how his words were
03:12.834 --> 03:16.485
going to be received. He had been accused apparently of not having
03:16.822 --> 03:20.026
honorable intentions, and certainly that happened throughout his preaching life.
03:21.084 --> 03:24.481
That the heart and center of this was, whose approval,
03:25.315 --> 03:29.064
whose pleasure, whose acceptance do
03:29.080 --> 03:32.702
I want? May I suggest to you that that's not just
03:33.202 --> 03:36.324
the concern of a preacher, but of every Christian who is trying to live their
03:36.372 --> 03:40.300
lives every day in the midst of other people. God made
03:40.800 --> 03:43.333
us social creatures, and so we care what other people think.
03:44.087 --> 03:47.361
We're concerned by how our words are going to be received, and so
03:47.861 --> 03:50.811
we try to give great care that what we say is received in the spirit
03:51.311 --> 03:54.550
intended. But there's also this part of us that knows sometimes we've got
03:55.050 --> 03:58.803
to say things that are right that the world disagrees with, and we're concerned about
03:58.851 --> 04:02.767
what kind of response we'll get in that. We care what
04:03.267 --> 04:06.041
other people think. We want the approval. Of others.
04:07.358 --> 04:10.892
When we think about our subject today and we look at 1 Thessalonians
04:11.117 --> 04:14.795
2:1-10, we're going to see some things that are said
04:14.811 --> 04:17.862
there that will help us with regard to that. But I think about a
04:18.362 --> 04:21.926
young man by the name of Zachary Nazario who was 15
04:21.974 --> 04:25.716
years old from New York, and he had seen this social media-driven
04:26.053 --> 04:29.282
trend known as subway surfing. It's simply when you
04:29.782 --> 04:32.799
get up on top of a moving subway train and you surf.
04:33.762 --> 04:36.620
There had been a lot of videos that had gone out and had been viral.
04:36.733 --> 04:40.345
And as the result of those viral videos, it grew—
04:40.586 --> 04:44.375
created this trend to want to do that. And so he found himself
04:44.875 --> 04:48.004
in February of 2023 being one who wanted to try it.
04:48.711 --> 04:52.918
And so with his girlfriend watching, he jumped up on top of a moving subway
04:53.030 --> 04:56.209
train, and just a few seconds later, that train hit a beam.
04:57.542 --> 05:00.577
And he killed— he was killed. His mother,
05:00.593 --> 05:04.205
Norma, made it her life's mission to try to tell everybody that
05:04.705 --> 05:08.476
there is a price too steep to pay in order to have the acceptance
05:09.247 --> 05:13.277
of other people. All you need to do is scour through the entertainment
05:13.777 --> 05:17.131
pages or through athletics, and you will find those who, in order
05:17.631 --> 05:21.000
to try to receive fame, they ruin their careers and
05:21.500 --> 05:24.966
their lives. And we find ourselves in that same situation
05:25.062 --> 05:28.513
sometimes. As social creatures who don't
05:29.013 --> 05:33.407
want to be isolated and who don't want our words to be perceived as negative
05:33.907 --> 05:37.643
or received in that way. And we shouldn't think the Apostle Paul was
05:37.739 --> 05:41.189
exempt from that just because he was a preacher. Do you remember on one occasion
05:41.689 --> 05:45.120
in 1 Corinthians chapter 9, the Apostle Paul says in that particular
05:45.620 --> 05:49.597
passage that he did all things for all men, he became all things to
05:49.613 --> 05:53.095
all men that by all means he might save some. 1 Corinthians chapter 9
05:53.595 --> 05:57.220
and verse 22, But even in those situations, in those circumstances,
05:58.439 --> 06:02.596
he was trying to please God and he was trying to save souls.
06:03.672 --> 06:06.721
But all we've got to do is to walk throughout the Scriptures and we will
06:07.221 --> 06:10.911
find examples of those who cared more about what people thought than they did
06:11.411 --> 06:14.779
about what God thought. You think about someone no less than Aaron,
06:15.308 --> 06:19.032
the brother of Moses, who as Moses goes up on Mount Sinai,
06:19.385 --> 06:22.483
the people are clamoring for a god to deliver them.
06:22.660 --> 06:26.558
Though the great God had already taken them so far. And so he made
06:27.183 --> 06:29.943
that golden calf to please them, Exodus chapter 32.
06:30.889 --> 06:34.467
Or you think about Saul, by his own words in 1 Samuel chapter
06:34.967 --> 06:38.557
15 and verse 24, he said, I spared Agag's
06:38.638 --> 06:41.990
life because I fear the people. And on how many
06:42.007 --> 06:45.504
occasions do we find the false prophets throughout the Old Testament
06:45.873 --> 06:50.011
as they bend their message to the masses or to please
06:50.043 --> 06:53.778
some important person. Or you think about Jesus and his
06:53.874 --> 06:57.786
ministry and how as he was teaching so effectively
06:57.802 --> 07:00.751
that many of the rulers of the synagogue believed in him.
07:02.130 --> 07:05.528
And yet because of their fear of being cast out of the synagogues, they would
07:06.028 --> 07:09.520
not confess him because they loved the approval of men rather than the
07:10.020 --> 07:12.902
approval of God. John chapter 12, verse 42 and 43.
07:14.393 --> 07:17.631
Enter the Apostle Paul who has a conviction
07:18.131 --> 07:21.190
that he wants to please God even if he has to risk
07:21.687 --> 07:25.437
the feathers. And so, he defends his integrity
07:25.613 --> 07:28.963
as a teacher of the gospel. But in the midst of that,
07:28.979 --> 07:32.586
he says, here's the approval of men and
07:33.086 --> 07:38.580
here's the approval of God. If you'll turn in your Bibles to 1 Thessalonians 2:1-8,
07:38.677 --> 07:41.578
I want us to make just 3 observations today.
07:42.684 --> 07:46.146
The observations that I'd like for us to make are with regard
07:46.646 --> 07:51.052
to this very subject. Number one, I'd like for us to notice how we seek
07:51.838 --> 07:56.330
the approval of man. When we see Paul talking
07:56.830 --> 08:00.967
about his ministry, he said that, I came to you after suffering and
08:01.467 --> 08:04.416
after going through mistreatment in Philippi. All we've got to do is go back to
08:04.496 --> 08:07.881
Acts chapter 16 and we see what his truly preaching the
08:08.381 --> 08:11.860
gospel had cost him. And he said, after that, we came to you as
08:11.892 --> 08:16.031
you yourselves know. And he said, we preached the God through much
08:16.848 --> 08:20.391
opposition. First of all, notice the word much. There was a
08:20.891 --> 08:24.238
lot. There was not just opposition in Philippi, but everywhere
08:24.738 --> 08:27.941
he went on the missionary journeys. And as he goes to Thessalonica, he's going to
08:28.005 --> 08:31.083
face some more. But I want you to pay attention for a moment to that
08:31.195 --> 08:35.090
word opposition. It is from the Greek word agonai.
08:35.619 --> 08:39.130
You can hear the word in it, can't you? Agony. It is the
08:39.210 --> 08:42.625
idea that the Greeks used of fighting and striving
08:42.737 --> 08:46.921
and competing to win, whether it's boxing or wrestling or in running
08:46.937 --> 08:50.677
or whatever it And Paul says, this was how we were sharing the
08:51.177 --> 08:54.129
truth of God's Word, with this kind of strife.
08:55.350 --> 08:58.770
But he was accused of not being an honest teacher of the Word.
08:59.508 --> 09:01.676
And in the midst of all of that, we see— and guys, why don't you
09:02.176 --> 09:05.064
go ahead and kill that? We're going to distract me and everybody else. I appreciate
09:05.564 --> 09:09.383
that. I'll wait for you. When we look
09:09.883 --> 09:13.702
at what is said there, The quickest sermon
09:13.734 --> 09:17.071
I ever preached. All right. This thing
09:17.087 --> 09:19.799
here is not working and it's not talking to that. So in case you're wondering,
09:20.873 --> 09:24.387
when you think about Paul and what he says about how it is that we
09:24.887 --> 09:28.222
seek the approval of men, he is going to bring up some of the ways
09:28.318 --> 09:31.832
that we seek the approval of men. And the first way he says
09:32.329 --> 09:34.511
is by excusing error.
09:35.538 --> 09:39.292
When Paul says, we did not come to you by way of these particular means,
09:39.388 --> 09:43.304
the first thing he says is, is we did not come by way of error.
09:43.962 --> 09:47.493
There is an impulse inside of all of us that
09:47.993 --> 09:51.152
wants us to defend ourselves against every opposition,
09:51.505 --> 09:54.538
every accusation of sin and wrongdoing in our lives.
09:55.533 --> 09:59.145
Paul is saying that we didn't feed that. We knew that this
09:59.209 --> 10:03.205
impulse exists in you and that there's this default position to say, there's nothing wrong
10:03.221 --> 10:06.367
in what I did. And so, we can find ourselves every day
10:06.527 --> 10:10.680
trying to tell somebody, look, I know what the Bible says, or maybe some people
10:11.180 --> 10:14.463
say the Bible say this, but it's okay. You can do this. You can stay
10:14.963 --> 10:18.630
in this. So Paul says that that's one way
10:18.870 --> 10:22.556
in which we seek the approval of men is by
10:23.056 --> 10:26.836
excusing error. But another way in which we seek the approval
10:26.868 --> 10:29.977
of men is by endorsing impurity.
10:30.971 --> 10:34.545
When you hear Paul say impurity, he's talking about that which is dirty, that which
10:34.593 --> 10:38.247
is impure, that which is immoral. And if
10:38.747 --> 10:42.320
there is one area in which people want their immorality to
10:42.336 --> 10:46.137
be defended, it has to do with the sexual decisions that
10:46.637 --> 10:50.402
they make in this life. You may have seen a picture of a WNBA star
10:50.514 --> 10:53.721
flash across the screen a moment ago. She is drawing a lot of fire,
10:53.753 --> 10:57.522
not because of her play on the court, although there's some controversy in that league
10:57.570 --> 11:01.081
this season anyway, but simply in many arenas because
11:01.114 --> 11:04.433
she says that a girl is a girl and a boy is a boy.
11:05.042 --> 11:08.601
No one wants to be told that they are an adulterer or
11:08.953 --> 11:12.368
a fornicator or homosexual or an immoral person.
11:13.137 --> 11:16.648
And we live in that atmosphere where there's very little tolerance for talking about
11:17.148 --> 11:21.152
that. And so, we're pressured, as Paul might have been, to bring a message
11:21.652 --> 11:24.278
with impurity. But he said, we did not do that.
11:25.064 --> 11:28.206
But he said, it also did not come by way of deceit.
11:29.568 --> 11:33.207
We are tempted to practice deceit. That's one of the ways in which we try
11:33.479 --> 11:36.686
to please men. The word that's deceit there is a word
11:36.766 --> 11:40.025
meant to catch with bait, but it came to mean to say something to
11:40.090 --> 11:43.478
gain an advantage on someone else. When we
11:43.978 --> 11:47.496
think about deceiving someone, this is the idea of telling them that,
11:47.577 --> 11:50.191
that what they're doing is okay when it's not okay,
11:50.901 --> 11:54.419
that perhaps a religious decision that was made in the past
11:54.774 --> 11:58.375
that is in contradiction to God's Word is in harmony
11:58.408 --> 12:01.687
with God's Word, or religious practice that they're a part of is
12:01.784 --> 12:05.555
okay even though the Bible says that it's not. Deceiving is
12:05.651 --> 12:09.319
to lead someone to think that something is true, to not tell the whole
12:09.512 --> 12:12.873
truth or the whole story, or to say something to leave
12:13.066 --> 12:16.940
an impression. And you think about how we find ourselves
12:17.729 --> 12:21.370
in circumstances like that all the time where
12:21.612 --> 12:25.637
someone is engaged in error. And John's
12:26.137 --> 12:29.678
going to say in 1 John 4:6, hereby know we the Spirit of truth and
12:30.178 --> 12:34.428
the spirit of error. And knowing that something is true and something is erroneous
12:34.928 --> 12:38.691
is one thing, but then facing somebody who is living in error is something else.
12:38.739 --> 12:43.003
And then there's the matter of impurity, especially with regard to personal lifestyle
12:43.503 --> 12:47.443
decisions, especially with regard to one of our basic drives and telling
12:47.491 --> 12:51.386
somebody in a circumstance. And I wonder in that there are those
12:51.482 --> 12:54.768
in the Bible who face the pressure to give into that. Do you ever
12:55.268 --> 12:58.374
think about John the Baptist and how much, how difficult it must have
12:58.874 --> 13:02.926
been for him? John the Baptist was speaking to Herod and
13:03.022 --> 13:05.923
his— not really his wife, his brother Philip's wife,
13:05.987 --> 13:09.433
Herodias. And he was saying that it was unlawful for Herod to be
13:09.933 --> 13:13.520
married to her. And so John— I mean, Herod went and got him and bound
13:14.020 --> 13:17.783
him in prison because he preached that. And Herodias had a grudge against
13:18.283 --> 13:21.550
him and wanted to put him to death, but could not, Mark 6:17-19.
13:22.576 --> 13:26.038
Or I think about Nathan. Would you like to have had
13:26.422 --> 13:29.788
the mission that Nathan was given? David has committed
13:30.268 --> 13:33.890
adultery with Bathsheba. He has put Uriah to death and
13:34.390 --> 13:38.056
now Nathan is called to go to him. And in 2 Samuel chapter 12
13:38.556 --> 13:40.652
and verse 9, he says, you have disregarded the word of the Lord and done
13:40.844 --> 13:44.466
evil in his sight and you have put to death Uriah the Hittite and
13:44.966 --> 13:47.606
have taken his wife to be your wife and you have killed him with the
13:48.106 --> 13:51.484
sword of the sons of Ammon. And then
13:51.516 --> 13:54.833
there's deceit, leaving someone with the impression
13:55.683 --> 13:58.955
that they're okay. In 1938,
13:58.971 --> 14:02.403
if you would've asked who is the greatest leader in Europe,
14:02.723 --> 14:06.059
in Great Britain, is it Neville Chamberlain or is it
14:06.348 --> 14:09.876
Winston Churchill? You'd had a hard time finding anybody
14:10.376 --> 14:13.613
who would've said Churchill. They would've all said Chamberlain. And here's what happened in
14:13.645 --> 14:17.093
1938. There was a conference, a Munich Conference,
14:17.157 --> 14:20.669
in which he went and he met with the representative of Nazi Germany.
14:21.167 --> 14:25.695
Adolf Hitler. And Hitler wanted to annex Czechoslovakia.
14:26.145 --> 14:30.096
And because we had just gone through a world war in which over 20 million
14:30.596 --> 14:33.966
people died, he appeased Hitler. He came back and
14:34.466 --> 14:38.061
even bragged about it to the press. But here's Winston Churchill
14:38.561 --> 14:42.895
who's saying, no, we've got to fight against this evil, this encroaching aggression.
14:43.650 --> 14:47.649
And he was isolated. There was nobody more unpopular among political leaders in
14:47.745 --> 14:50.555
Great Britain than Winston Churchill. He was called a warmonger.
14:51.453 --> 14:54.661
2 years later, ironically, Winston Churchill becomes Prime Minister
14:55.161 --> 14:59.103
in place of Neville Chamberlain, and he awakened the need to oppose evil
14:59.295 --> 15:02.679
in his country and around the world. And if you look back at
15:03.179 --> 15:06.560
who was the greatest leader today, nobody would say Chamberlain. They'd say he's an
15:06.608 --> 15:09.687
utter failure. They would say the hero is Winston Churchill.
15:09.976 --> 15:13.200
And it's easy for us to look back, but think about how
15:13.264 --> 15:16.471
we live out each and every day, and we're
15:16.971 --> 15:20.673
faced with the temptation to tell people what it is that they want to hear.
15:21.909 --> 15:25.299
It's easier in the short term, in the here and now, for us to say,
15:25.523 --> 15:27.885
look, it's okay, just do what you want to do,
15:28.511 --> 15:31.821
and the world may applaud us. We can stand up
15:32.321 --> 15:35.563
and say the very difficult, and there may be those who will say those things
15:36.063 --> 15:39.804
about us that are unflattering and that hurt. But in
15:39.901 --> 15:43.097
retrospect, which perspective do we want?
15:43.676 --> 15:47.065
Do we want God to praise us at the end for having stood up for
15:47.565 --> 15:51.400
Him, or in that moment, bend to the will of others and please them.
15:52.218 --> 15:56.037
And so the Apostle Paul shows how we seek the approval
15:56.537 --> 16:00.835
of men. We do so in the ways that we just saw, through endorsing
16:01.027 --> 16:04.766
error, by endorsing impurity, and by practicing
16:04.879 --> 16:08.296
deceit. But the second thing I want us to notice that is equally
16:08.313 --> 16:11.666
important in my mind is why is it that
16:11.698 --> 16:15.694
we seek the approval of men? If Scripture is so plain that
16:16.194 --> 16:19.577
it's wrong for us to do, why are we tempted to do it so often?
16:20.359 --> 16:23.403
Now, maybe there are some answers that you have in your mind that you would
16:23.500 --> 16:27.645
answer that, but as you consider them, Paul gives 3.
16:27.986 --> 16:31.839
It's not exhaustive, but I think it's representative of
16:32.339 --> 16:35.107
why it is that we want to gain the approval of others.
16:36.622 --> 16:40.074
One of the reasons why we seek the approval of men is
16:40.252 --> 16:42.602
we want to gain an advantage.
16:43.672 --> 16:47.622
Paul says that we never spoke to you with flattering speech.
16:48.456 --> 16:52.095
When you consider what flattery is, flattery is saying something nice about
16:52.159 --> 16:56.070
somebody that you don't mean in order to win or influence
16:56.134 --> 16:59.517
them. Paul said, never ever did we
17:00.017 --> 17:03.813
do that. It wasn't our motivation. We didn't try to get an advantage
17:03.989 --> 17:07.179
over you by saying what it is that you wanted. You know, the Bible has
17:07.291 --> 17:11.299
a lot to say about flattery. I think about Ezekiel who writes
17:11.799 --> 17:15.082
in Ezekiel 13:16, and he talks about the prophets who prophesied
17:15.146 --> 17:18.560
to Israel and Jerusalem, and they say a message of peace peace when
17:18.656 --> 17:21.927
there is no peace. Ezekiel chapter 13 and verse 16.
17:22.841 --> 17:26.753
Well, you think about Rehoboam, he's following his father Solomon and
17:27.253 --> 17:29.992
he's faced with a decision of what we should do for the kingdom. Should we
17:30.120 --> 17:33.070
lighten their tax load or should we continue to have it as it was?
17:33.487 --> 17:37.704
And the wise men who were with his father Solomon gave him some good advice,
17:38.153 --> 17:41.264
but then there were some young men that came along and flattered him and spoke
17:41.764 --> 17:45.208
to his vanity and said, your little pinky will be thicker than your father's loins.
17:45.529 --> 17:49.202
And through that That flattery, by saying something
17:49.702 --> 17:54.718
to win his favor, a kingdom was split. 1 Kings 12:10-11.
17:55.792 --> 17:59.368
Or you think about in the New Testament, there's Tyre and Sidon,
17:59.544 --> 18:02.511
and Herod comes to them in Acts 12:22,
18:02.912 --> 18:06.151
and they praise him with flattering words, saying, these are the words of
18:06.651 --> 18:10.512
the voice of God and not of men. And that flattery in this occasion
18:10.528 --> 18:13.735
hurt the one who embraced it and accepted it, and he lost his life.
18:14.785 --> 18:17.922
In Acts 24:2, you have Tertullus, who is a
18:18.002 --> 18:21.976
lawyer representing the Jews who are trying to have Paul condemned, and they practice
18:22.105 --> 18:26.190
flattery in order to try to reach the heart of
18:26.690 --> 18:30.677
the vain and brutal Felix. Flattery is used by false
18:31.177 --> 18:34.665
teachers to deceive, Romans 16:18, to gain an advantage,
18:34.761 --> 18:38.460
Jude 1:16, and David calls it plain old-fashioned wickedness,
18:38.476 --> 18:39.409
Psalm 5:9.
18:41.744 --> 18:45.662
And yet we find ourselves perhaps thinking that if we
18:46.162 --> 18:50.062
will say words to flatter somebody else, we can grease the wheels of some
18:50.094 --> 18:53.273
advantage that we can gain. It's a temptation
18:53.305 --> 18:56.982
that we face. Another temptation that we face
18:57.482 --> 19:00.418
as to why we would seek the approval of men is greed.
19:01.173 --> 19:04.288
Paul says that we never came with a pretext for
19:04.788 --> 19:07.962
greed. Now, for this, he says, God is my witness.
19:08.956 --> 19:12.355
Paul could say, you can listen and hear that there was never flattery in our
19:12.419 --> 19:15.497
speech, but what about our motivation? Were we moved by greed?
19:15.705 --> 19:18.751
He says, God knows that we didn't. Now,
19:19.777 --> 19:23.271
you may remember if you're old enough that Madonna had the hit Material
19:23.303 --> 19:27.423
Girl in 1985, and she said something that is certainly true
19:27.551 --> 19:30.677
of the '80s. She said, we are living in a material world.
19:31.062 --> 19:34.284
This became known as the anthem of the '80s. It represented the
19:34.348 --> 19:37.811
desire and the drive for money and consumerism that was so true in
19:38.311 --> 19:40.905
the '80s, but it's just as true today as it was then.
19:41.899 --> 19:45.619
Greed is not simply the desire to have more or more
19:45.667 --> 19:49.323
of what is needed, but to have more, to have more than others have.
19:50.140 --> 19:53.187
And through that, to be able to be seen as those who are to be
19:53.687 --> 19:57.243
admired and respected because we've accumulated more of the things of this
19:57.355 --> 20:01.219
life. You know, Jesus was focused on how that can complicate
20:01.719 --> 20:05.484
the life of a disciple. In Mark 7:21-23,
20:05.789 --> 20:08.947
he calls it coveting. And he says it's evil and he says it
20:09.060 --> 20:12.779
defiles. And then in Luke chapter 12 and verse 15, he says, take heed
20:13.279 --> 20:17.235
and be aware of every form of greed, for a
20:17.735 --> 20:21.323
person's life does not consist in the abundance of the things that he
20:21.823 --> 20:24.866
possesses. Luke 12 and verse 15. And then he follows that up with one of
20:25.366 --> 20:28.713
the more sobering parables in all of the gospels in which a
20:29.213 --> 20:33.057
rich farmer because of his greed loses his soul. And Paul says in Ephesians
20:33.105 --> 20:36.343
chapter 5 and verse 3, that greed is not once to be
20:36.843 --> 20:39.854
named among you. It is not proper for those who have been set apart by
20:40.354 --> 20:43.908
God. Our desire to have the things of this world
20:44.805 --> 20:47.866
can cause us to say whatever it is that we think that people want to
20:48.366 --> 20:51.856
hear. Now, it's easy for us to see how a preacher might bend his message
20:52.356 --> 20:57.128
in that way. In a public forum or in a one-on-one conversation,
20:57.946 --> 21:00.734
perhaps we want to make sure that we don't say the wrong thing to somebody
21:01.071 --> 21:05.061
that we're trying to persuade or win over. If it
21:05.078 --> 21:08.221
might hurt our pocketbook. But I don't care who you are,
21:09.248 --> 21:11.606
if you find yourself trying to live in this world, there are going to be
21:12.106 --> 21:15.600
moments when you've got to make a choice as to what do you want?
21:15.920 --> 21:19.802
The treasures that can't be taken away are the ones that can, Matthew 6:19-21.
21:20.412 --> 21:23.652
And then he gives a third reason why we seek the approval of men,
21:24.566 --> 21:28.512
and that's glory. Someone might say that the
21:29.012 --> 21:32.329
greed is the means to an end and glory is the end.
21:33.002 --> 21:35.728
We want to be envied by others. We want them to see and look at
21:35.792 --> 21:39.735
us and see popularity and status. And so the Apostle
21:40.235 --> 21:43.246
Paul could say, when you look at our lives and the ministry that we did
21:43.746 --> 21:47.398
among you, we did not do that. And so it challenges each
21:47.494 --> 21:51.277
of us. Am I trying to gain an advantage on
21:51.777 --> 21:55.670
someone else when I talk to them about especially spiritual
21:56.170 --> 21:59.934
things? Am I motivated by greed? Am I trying to make sure
22:00.434 --> 22:03.188
it doesn't hurt my bottom line? And that may be as we do business,
22:03.300 --> 22:06.795
that may be in our friendships, in our relationships that we're trying
22:06.827 --> 22:09.953
to cultivate. And are we seeking the glory and
22:10.453 --> 22:14.249
the admiration of others? You know, the business world
22:14.425 --> 22:16.798
and corporations have picked up on that.
22:17.711 --> 22:21.495
They realize through social media platforms, they feed into this
22:21.995 --> 22:25.262
desire for glory that we have. You know, 30 years ago,
22:25.342 --> 22:28.628
if you wanted to seek fame and glory, you'd have to move out to Hollywood
22:29.128 --> 22:32.238
or go up to New York or go to Nashville. And try out and
22:32.738 --> 22:35.047
to try to live the life and make the sacrifices in order to do that.
22:35.112 --> 22:38.419
But now all you need is a smartphone and a social
22:38.919 --> 22:41.486
media account, and everybody wants to be a star.
22:42.578 --> 22:46.416
The devil understands that. One of the 3 avenues of temptation
22:46.592 --> 22:49.627
is the pride of life. 1 John 2:16,
22:49.964 --> 22:52.886
and Jesus says, woe unto you when all men speak well of you,
22:53.336 --> 22:58.030
for so did their fathers, the false prophets, Luke 6:26.
22:59.557 --> 23:03.623
Now, Paul is saying we didn't do these things, but these
23:03.655 --> 23:07.092
are some of the ways in which people seek the approval of
23:07.592 --> 23:11.476
men. And then he comes along and he says, here's why. There's these basic drives
23:11.976 --> 23:14.994
within us that would move us to do that. But the third thing I want
23:15.042 --> 23:18.480
to observe before we close is that Paul
23:18.980 --> 23:22.545
shows us how we can seek the approval of God. You know what I love
23:22.641 --> 23:25.704
about Paul? He doesn't just present the problem, but he gives some practical tips,
23:25.720 --> 23:29.262
some principles that can help us. And I
23:29.762 --> 23:33.135
want you to notice as we walk through these that some of these are easier
23:33.151 --> 23:37.036
than others, but all of them are effective. Here they are very quickly.
23:37.085 --> 23:40.587
Number 1, he says, in essence, be bold.
23:41.410 --> 23:45.581
He says that by saying that we preach the gospel to you with boldness,
23:45.842 --> 23:50.026
as you know. Boldness does not mean rudeness
23:50.123 --> 23:53.490
and crudeness and sarcasm and insults and putting other people
23:53.990 --> 23:57.069
down. Paul is going to demonstrate that later in this paragraph.
23:57.524 --> 24:00.136
But here's the boldness that's under consideration.
24:01.555 --> 24:05.387
When God needs me to speak up for him, I can't
24:05.403 --> 24:08.858
be afraid of what people are going to think. We mentioned this passage
24:09.358 --> 24:13.181
in Bible class this morning, Matthew 10:28. The Bible says, do not fear him
24:13.681 --> 24:15.749
who is able to kill the body but is not able to kill the soul,
24:15.798 --> 24:19.622
but rather fear him who is able to destroy both body and soul in hell.
24:20.141 --> 24:24.030
In John, at the end of the Bible, in Revelation 21:8, he talks about
24:24.530 --> 24:26.665
these activities that we might give into that will cost us our eternity with God.
24:26.762 --> 24:30.142
And headlining that list this is cowardice,
24:30.159 --> 24:33.703
and it goes right alongside of murder and fornication
24:33.817 --> 24:37.887
and idolatry. And so the boldness that he calls for is a boldness
24:37.983 --> 24:41.284
that causes us to stand up even in difficult
24:41.784 --> 24:45.251
moments. But what will help us to do that? What about a gratitude
24:45.268 --> 24:48.703
for the cross? What about an appreciation of
24:49.203 --> 24:51.359
how deeply and profoundly God loves us?
24:52.767 --> 24:55.569
What if we will make his priorities our priorities?
24:56.142 --> 24:59.817
What if we are set on responding to the love and
25:00.317 --> 25:03.556
the sacrifice of heaven by being willing to do so? All of this
25:03.684 --> 25:06.813
and more can feed a boldness in us that God
25:07.313 --> 25:10.023
is counting on us to have. Be bold. But then number 2,
25:10.905 --> 25:14.997
be aware. In verse 4, you know, Paul has said a lot about God
25:15.497 --> 25:18.014
knows, he's our witness. He says,
25:18.768 --> 25:22.250
God examines the heart. He said, we're approved by God and so we speak not
25:22.299 --> 25:25.072
as pleasing men, but God. Who examines the heart.
25:26.290 --> 25:29.959
It is so easy for me to convince myself that I'm fine
25:29.991 --> 25:33.996
where I am, but God tells us to go deeper. He says, every way
25:34.141 --> 25:38.162
of a man is right in his own eyes, but the Lord weighs the hearts.
25:38.306 --> 25:40.870
Proverbs 21 and verse 2. Proverbs 16 and verse 2.
25:41.607 --> 25:45.068
God sees and searches the heart. 1 Samuel chapter
25:45.568 --> 25:49.121
16 and verse 7. And God who sees down tells us, you need
25:49.621 --> 25:54.239
to examine yourself. 2 Corinthians 13 and verse 5. Be aware of
25:54.255 --> 25:57.982
how you're thinking and what you're thinking. Are you seeking God's
25:58.482 --> 26:00.987
approval or man's approval? But then he says,
26:01.822 --> 26:04.634
be genuine, verse 5 and verse 6.
26:05.598 --> 26:09.936
Be who you say that you are. Be right. Be the same person everywhere
26:10.436 --> 26:13.422
that you are with whomever you find yourself.
26:14.579 --> 26:18.017
Don't use a pretext. He said, we weren't beset by flattery
26:18.129 --> 26:19.942
and these other your motivations.
26:21.176 --> 26:24.478
Then number 4, be gentle. Paul never
26:24.978 --> 26:28.678
sacrificed love and compassion in order to tell people the things
26:28.694 --> 26:31.932
that they needed to hear. If you want a contrast
26:31.981 --> 26:35.651
of being driven by compassion and love and being driven otherwise,
26:35.828 --> 26:39.675
even in religion, think about the woman caught in adultery in John chapter 8.
26:40.412 --> 26:44.708
Who was this woman? This woman was an object of curiosity
26:45.125 --> 26:48.588
and amusement for the bystanders who were watching everything take place in
26:49.088 --> 26:53.125
John chapter 8. Of sexual attraction
26:53.222 --> 26:56.862
to one man. She was one that was a pawn in the hands
26:57.151 --> 27:00.952
of the scribes and Pharisees, but to Jesus, she was a person
27:01.452 --> 27:04.945
to defend, a soul to save, and a forgiven person to send on
27:05.445 --> 27:09.948
their way. And Paul is expressing this kind of compassion.
27:10.943 --> 27:14.968
You don't have to sacrifice one whit, one iota of love in
27:15.468 --> 27:19.167
order to share the truth with somebody. You know, medieval blacksmiths
27:19.696 --> 27:23.702
departed from the normal way of shodding a horse with a smooth
27:24.727 --> 27:28.317
horseshoe. They decided they would put cutting edges
27:28.573 --> 27:32.579
on them and jagged points. And to a dying man
27:33.079 --> 27:36.985
on the battlefield, the approach of a warhorse was terrifying. And the idea
27:37.065 --> 27:41.135
of running over somebody who is already down and out has been now
27:41.263 --> 27:45.303
known as running roughshod over a person. And it comes from that practice.
27:46.459 --> 27:49.701
You ever known somebody who was very— would profess themselves to be very
27:49.749 --> 27:53.569
spiritual, but they would stomp on somebody who was already spiritually
27:53.681 --> 27:56.955
down and out? Paul would say, we've got to be
27:57.455 --> 28:00.727
careful to be gentle with those who are lost, 2 Timothy 2:23,
28:00.983 --> 28:04.707
and be gentle with those who are wayward, Galatians 6:1.
28:05.060 --> 28:09.104
And so Paul says, even as we were motivated to do God's will God's way,
28:09.489 --> 28:12.702
we were gentle. But then we look
28:13.202 --> 28:15.851
and we see that he was— he would say, be sacrificial.
28:16.558 --> 28:20.173
In verse 8, Paul says that when we came and we preached
28:20.673 --> 28:23.836
to you, we not only imparted to you the gospel of God, but our very
28:23.933 --> 28:27.291
lives because you were so dear to us.
28:28.689 --> 28:32.480
The sacrifices of the Apostle Paul are abundantly illustrated
28:32.980 --> 28:36.898
throughout the New Testament, and it points out something that's helpful to us When
28:36.946 --> 28:40.620
we try to live in this world, we're not trying to compromise
28:40.716 --> 28:45.753
the truth, but we are going to spend and be spent. 2 Corinthians 12:15,
28:46.090 --> 28:50.276
we're willing to put in the time and the energy
28:50.501 --> 28:53.773
and the resources to help somebody who's struggling.
28:54.992 --> 28:57.671
And you know, when you do that, when you invest in people,
28:58.601 --> 29:02.467
they'll allow you to say even very difficult things because they know that you
29:02.967 --> 29:05.994
care about them and you've demonstrated that. How do we do that? Paul gives some
29:06.494 --> 29:08.846
great tips that will help us to want to please God.
29:09.919 --> 29:13.508
You know, when you think about the Apostle Paul, he points out this idea
29:14.069 --> 29:17.514
that we, we have a choice to make and
29:17.530 --> 29:21.022
we're going to make one choice or the other. Moses was in
29:21.119 --> 29:24.547
this predicament every day of his life. By faith Moses,
29:24.740 --> 29:28.088
when he came of age, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter,
29:28.168 --> 29:31.869
choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the
29:32.369 --> 29:36.093
pleasures of sin for a season. Esteeming the riches of Christ greater treasure
29:36.593 --> 29:41.202
than all in Egypt because he had respect for the reward, Hebrews 11:24-26.
29:41.736 --> 29:44.515
And it would seem to me that of all people living in this world,
29:44.547 --> 29:48.131
the one who should have a good, clear image of self
29:48.906 --> 29:52.602
and should have a confidence to try to please God above men,
29:52.698 --> 29:56.483
it should be a child of God. We know we're an image bearer
29:56.983 --> 30:01.229
of God, Genesis 1:26-27. We can read in God's Word
30:01.729 --> 30:05.096
that the favor and the attention and the approval of men
30:05.436 --> 30:09.368
is fleeting. We know and understand that of all relationships
30:09.384 --> 30:12.601
that we cultivate, none is more important than our relationship with God,
30:12.698 --> 30:16.223
2 Corinthians chapter 6 and verse 18. And we
30:16.255 --> 30:20.550
realize that what God prioritizes must be what we do
30:21.050 --> 30:24.963
as well. The choice that we face as
30:24.979 --> 30:29.300
we live and go from this place out without the insulation of
30:29.800 --> 30:33.540
our brothers and sisters in Christ is whose approval am
30:34.040 --> 30:37.495
I seeking? Paul shows us some of the ways that we do that and why
30:37.608 --> 30:41.790
we do it, but then he gives us even more reason to seek
30:42.290 --> 30:45.569
the approval of God. Whose approval are
30:46.069 --> 30:49.971
you seeking today? You know, when it comes to what God says
30:50.019 --> 30:52.430
to do to be saved, men say a lot of different things.
30:53.143 --> 30:56.258
But we've got to go with what God says. God tells us to
30:56.758 --> 31:00.369
respond to the great love and sacrifice and grace of the cross through
31:00.869 --> 31:04.351
obedient faith. It includes believing that Jesus is the Son
31:04.399 --> 31:07.161
of God, repenting of sins, and being baptized.
31:08.060 --> 31:10.709
And for those of us who are children of God, as we fight that battle
31:11.209 --> 31:14.547
every day, we've got to be sure that we're trying to please him. And when
31:14.579 --> 31:18.754
we don't, we need to draw on the resources he gives us to find
31:19.254 --> 31:22.354
that courage again. One of the ways that he does that is when we have
31:22.854 --> 31:26.581
struggled to walk in the light, that we can make that known, turn away from
31:26.694 --> 31:29.860
it, ask our brothers and sisters to pray for us. If that's a
31:30.360 --> 31:33.781
need you have today, we would encourage you to respond even right now as we
31:34.281 --> 31:34.472
stand and sing.
