ABOUT THIS EPISODE
Our words have the power to build up or tear down, to give life or deal death. In this sermon from Proverbs, we explore the dark side of that power: harsh words, foolish words, gossip, slander, lies, and flattery. Why do we use our words to wound and manipulate others? And what does the gospel have to say to us both as sinners guilty of these words and as sufferers wounded by them? Christ meets us in both places, forgiving our sinful speech, healing our wounds, and giving us what we so often try to take from others. Ultimately, we don't need to use people to get what we already have in Christ.

Sinful anger is appealing because it feels powerful and in control. But Proverbs shows us that true power belongs to the one who masters himself. Jesus embodied this perfectly, and it is ultimately his rule and reign over our hearts that displaces the anger that too often reigns there.
We all want to go up — approved, respected, thought well of. So we climb. But Proverbs warns that pride’s climb runs backward: the harder you push, the further down you go.
