On Niagara by Alec Soth.

On this special episode of Painting Discourse, I paint a rural house I returned to on location after many years while talking about art photographer Alec Soth’s intimate photo series on Niagara Falls in he early 2000s. I Discuss growing up in the region next to a tourist trap, localism, geographic meaning complexes, post-industrialization, the transformation of the landscape due to changing culture and politics, and Soth’s theme of the Falls representing both intimacy and death in the human soul. Available in video form on YouTube and Substack, and in audio form on Substack, spotify and apple podcast.
