ABOUT THIS EPISODE
What does it actually mean to follow Jesus beyond simply checking spiritual boxes? In this message, we dig into one of the most overlooked yet foundational passages in the entire Sermon on the Mount, Matthew 5:17-20, where Jesus makes a statement about himself that reframes everything we think we know about righteousness. Jesus is not here to tear down the law and the prophets, the Torah and the writings of the Old Testament prophets that guided God's people for fifteen centuries. He is here to complete them, to bring them into full focus. And in doing so, he issues a challenge that would have stopped everyone in their tracks: our righteousness must surpass that of the Pharisees, the very people considered the gold standard of religious devotion. Rather than setting an impossible bar for rule-keeping, Jesus is pointing us toward something far deeper. The Pharisees had the law memorized and followed it meticulously on the outside, yet many had missed the heart of it. This message calls us to ask ourselves a harder question than whether we have been reading our Bible or attending church. It asks us to examine the condition of our hearts. Are we seeking to look good, or are we genuinely being transformed from the inside out? The difference between those two things is everything.
