ABOUT THIS EPISODE
Feeling overwhelmed in your homeschool doesn’t mean you’re failing. It’s about carrying an invisible load you can’t see clearly. Once you can name each load, you can stop fixing the wrong problems. The free homeschool overwhelm quiz below helps you find yours in about 5 minutes.
You wake up with good intentions. Today will be different! You’ve got your lesson plans ready, your coffee brewing, and determination in your heart. But even before lunch, someone’s melting down over math, the laundry is calling your name, and that familiar knot in your stomach whispers: “Am I doing this right?”
If this sounds like your typical Tuesday (or Monday… or every day), you’re not alone. But most importantly, you really can overcome this and enjoy your sweet homeschool mom life.
Introducing the Homeschool Overwhelm QUIZ…When homeschooling starts feeling too heavy, most of us try to fix what we can see on the surface:
- “I need a better routine.”
- “There must be a better curriculum out there.”
- “Maybe I just need more organization.”
- “If I were more motivated, this would all work.”
But here’s what I’ve learned after two decades of homeschooling and six years of coaching homeschool moms: homeschool overwhelm isn’t really about your to-do list. In fact, it goes much deeper than schedules and curriculum choices.
The 4 Hidden Roots of Homeschool OverwhelmAs Brené Brown says, “You either walk inside your story and own it or you stand outside your story and hustle for your worthiness.” When we can’t name what’s really draining us, we end up hustling—trying planner after planner, curriculum after curriculum—instead of addressing the real roots.
Brene Brown
After working with hundreds of homeschool families, I’ve found that overwhelm usually grows from four roots that have nothing to do with your daily schedule or your organizational skills, and it sure isn’t pointing to your “enoughness”.
1. The Invisible Mental LoadSure, you’re remembering to sharpen the kids’ skates before hockey, find the ballet slippers before dance class, and buy more erasers (they’re under the sofa cushions, FYI). But underneath all that sits something heavier: the mental and emotional responsibility for your whole family’s education and development. Curriculum coordinator, guidance counselor, learning specialist, activities director, long-term planner: all of those jobs land on one person.
This load runs in the background of your mind all day, every day. And it’s exhausting.
2. Identity ErosionWhether you left a career to homeschool or never wanted anything beyond motherhood, it’s easy for everything you are and do to revolve around your children. You love your role deeply, and you might still be craving something more: creative pursuits, a business idea, your own learning, or simply remembering who you are outside of “homeschool mom.”
3. The Boundary-less LifeWhen your home is your school, and your students are your children, everything bleeds together. You never really clock out. There’s no school day that ends, no weekend off from being the teacher, and no summer break from worrying about learning gaps.
4. Unprocessed Stress and EmotionsYou’ve become an expert at managing everyone else’s big feelings while pushing your own aside. Those feelings don’t disappear. They pile up. That’s why you might find yourself snapping at small things, or feeling buried by a life that looks manageable from the outside.
Which Root Is Draining You Most? You don’t have to tackle all four at once. Usually, one or two drain you more than the others. The free Homeschool Overwhelm Quiz, a 5-minute burnout check-in for homeschool moms, helps you see which ones.
The quiz looks at 8 areas of your homeschool life, two for each root:
- The invisible mental load: Mental Clarity & Decision Fatigue, Capacity & Energy
- Identity erosion: Identity & Self-Trust, Purpose & Vision
- The boundary-less life: Boundaries & Personal Space, Relationships & Connection
- Unprocessed stress and emotions: Emotional Load, Joy & Fulfillment
It was made specifically for homeschool moms, so it understands what generic stress tests miss: teaching several kids at once, balancing school with running a home, making education decisions that feel like they’ll shape your kids’ futures, and living without the usual breaks and support.
First, answer 32 short reflection questions. In about 5 minutes, you’ll receive:
- Your scores in all 8 areas, so you can see where you’re steady and where you’re stretched thin
- What your results mean, and how they’re likely showing up in your days
- Personalized next steps to care for the areas that need it most
- An invitation to a free Aligned Homeschool Reset Session if your results show you’re carrying too much
Sabrina came to me after “many years of survival mode and heavy pressure” on herself. As a result, she’d lost enthusiasm for homeschooling and felt depleted. After identifying and addressing her specific roots of overwhelm, she shared: “I’m feeling much more balanced. The coaching has helped to reassure my path, and I find myself moving back into the space of doing things that I loved before becoming so burnt out.”
Brittany discovered that unclear boundaries were her biggest obstacle: “I felt responsible for everybody’s emotions.” Once she identified this root, she was able to “shed harmful patterns and habits, and really center the people and things that truly matter to me. Now I’m pouring time into personal projects that bring me joy and fulfillment.”
Whitney realized her overwhelm stemmed from the invisible mental load: “I needed to figure out how to meet my son’s needs in our homeschool… Coaching was helpful in ways I wasn’t expecting. I feel more confident in what homeschooling looks like within my home. I am a better detective with my kids to see what they value and care about.”
You’re More Capable Than You RealizeThe fact that you’re here, seeking understanding and solutions, tells me you’re exactly the kind of intentional parent your kids need. As one mom shared with me: “I can’t remember the last time I felt this safe to talk to someone and share difficult, vulnerable things from my heart and past, while knowing that I would get compassionate validation and wise advice.”
After all, homeschooling is supposed to feel meaningful, and it can again. Not perfect, not without challenges, but aligned and sustainable and life-giving.
You don’t have to carry all this weight alone, and you don’t have to have it all figured out. You just need to understand what you’re really dealing with and bring the right kind of care to the right places.
So your first step is naming what’s really going on.
Take the Quiz Now →Your journey toward confidence and clarity starts with naming what’s really going on. You’ve got this.
