Speaker 1: WTLCAMW two three six CR, Indianapolis, broadcasting from the Praise Indi Indiego Studios, Indigo Boldly moving Indy Forward. It's Community Connection with Tina Cosby on Praise AM thirteen ten ninety five point one FM.
00:00:17
Speaker 2: And good afternoon, and welcome to Community Connection. I'm Tina Cosby. Today is Friday, August the seventh. Happy birthday, Miss Fashana. Three one seven four eight zero thirteen ten three one seven for eight zero thirteen ten is the number to the show. And today we are coming to you live from opening day at the twenty twenty six Indiana State Fair. We are broadcasting from the rewind A VHS Revival rewind A VHS Revival exhibit here in the Harvest Pavilion, and you're going to learn a lot more about this particular attraction, as well as a number of other exciting things to see and do here now until the twenty third of this month. But we're not gonna worry about when the fair ends. Today. The fair just started, just opened in eric. I wish you could be out here with this year back there at the studio though, holding things down as you always, Yes, Yeah, making it happen how are you.
00:01:17
Speaker 3: Doing, doing fine, doing great? Doing well?
00:01:20
Speaker 4: Yeah?
00:01:20
Speaker 2: Yeah, So what about the weather? I will tell you when I came in. When I went into the studio today, it was pretty cloudy, but you know, no rain or anything. And then just as I was going to my car to come out here to the fair, the puddles everywhere. I said, oh my goodness, it rain. Now. Of course I didn't have any windows in my in my office, and I didn't look out any windows, but it must have been kind of like a cloudburst or something because I didn't. It didn't last long, did it.
00:01:50
Speaker 3: No, kind of scattered. It's pretty much scattered at this point. And right now down here it's partly cloudy downtown eighty one degrees as we come on the air, but there's a chance of some pop up storms here and there. Doesn't look major at this point for the most part. The weather service is after four o'clock this afternoon, but partly Sunday for the most part. Eighty five, Tina, before we're done today.
00:02:11
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, eighty five before we're done. So not a whole whole whole lot of weather.
00:02:16
Speaker 3: No, not who I'm looking at the radar now, it's pretty much scattered and at this point on the radar right now, very little there, pretty much the bulk of it's to the east of Indianapolis, a few small pop up maybe showers to the southwest. But that's what we have right now. So okay, looking.
00:02:37
Speaker 2: Good at looking good looking at the fair is looking great?
00:02:40
Speaker 3: I bet it is. I can hear the sounds. Can you smell the fans?
00:02:45
Speaker 2: I smelled it. And you know what, somebody needs to give me a pet on the back because I walked past every food every food attraction if you will, and didn't stop and get a thing just yet. But hey, the day is still the day is still young, and I have yeah, I got some more time out here.
00:03:03
Speaker 3: More time, yeah, plenty of time to enjoy something today.
00:03:07
Speaker 2: Absolutely absolutely so. Well. Here with us Eric to help us kick things off is Leroy Lewis, the third. He's the director of Community and Media Engagement for the Indiana State Fair. And mister Lewis, has been a minute since we last talked. How are you doing.
00:03:24
Speaker 5: I'm amazing right now the opening day of the fair has come.
00:03:28
Speaker 6: My super Bowl time is here.
00:03:30
Speaker 5: Oh yeah, I've been here since three forty five this morning, and I still have a little energy left.
00:03:36
Speaker 6: So okay, I'm going strong.
00:03:38
Speaker 2: Okay, I have to add, what do you do at three forty five? So you must not have gone to bed because to be here by three forty five, you got to be up by what one or two? Okay, Okay, I got into it.
00:03:49
Speaker 6: But we have media hits early in the morning.
00:03:52
Speaker 5: So I see those people that like to watch the news at four am, we got to have something on there for them.
00:03:57
Speaker 2: Okay, I get it. I get it. Truly a media man right here. Indeed, So tell us about how things have gone so far. Speaking of early morning, before we get to that, our producer Eric Garns wanted to know, is there's still a breakfast at the Fair drive through that you remember? Remember that when they're maybe you know what? That might have been a sponsored event now.
00:04:20
Speaker 5: But you know, I'm not that old now. Don't put that on how long ago that was. But there is not a drive through breakfast right now.
00:04:27
Speaker 2: No, I think you know what now that I think about it, Eric, I remember hearing the name Hardy's actually sponsored that that's what it was.
00:04:35
Speaker 3: And it also might have happened, you know, before COVID. It could have been before when COVID happened at Gone Away.
00:04:41
Speaker 2: Then how long you've been with the fair.
00:04:43
Speaker 6: I've only been here with the Fair three years.
00:04:45
Speaker 2: Oh yeah, that well that predates that.
00:04:48
Speaker 5: Everybody thinks I've been here so much longer. But I'm I'm that freshman that knows everybody that they think is a senior. I'm just a guy that likes to talk and enjoy to meet new people that walk through the fairgrounds every years. So everybody just thinks I've been here for a while, but it's only been three years.
00:05:03
Speaker 2: It's because you handle it so very well. I'm doing the best veteran Okay, get us started day one.
00:05:08
Speaker 6: How it's been amazing.
00:05:10
Speaker 5: We've had our opening ceremonies over at our new train depot. That has been an amazing experience. We have, of course, a lot going on this year. You're in the rewind exhibit. Like you said, So those of us that are were born in the nineteen hundreds, we understand and remember VHS tapes and this is the nostalgia that we get.
00:05:30
Speaker 2: To see now. So you're you're young enough to remember the VHS tapes.
00:05:34
Speaker 5: Seriously, listen, here's the thing, this generation xers we have been through before cell phones and now through AI. So we've seen everything. It's just a few things that we might have missed, but we've.
00:05:48
Speaker 6: Kind of seen it all.
00:05:49
Speaker 5: So yeah, I've I missed the eight track, but I was there for a sorry, So yeah, I'm there. I'm just there on that cuss. So that's why the generation X, I say is the best generation. But yeah, this is an amazing experience. We have so much going on, so much new stuff. We are partnering with the Indianapolis Indians this year, so our theme is always a hit and with them we have activations throughout the Girl Fairgrounds. We have a new whiffletball field that we have for families and community members to go with football. So again one in nineteen hundreds, those young people that have no clue what a wif football is. But we have a whiffleball field that we are often on our north side of campus for families to come and swing the back and try to get those home runs.
00:06:30
Speaker 2: Now here. Wiffleball maybe an Olympic sport coming up pretty soon. Listen, I'm joking, I'm joking.
00:06:34
Speaker 5: Listen, break dancing is and you know, physic football it's a national sport.
00:06:41
Speaker 6: So I mean, there's a national champion of with fotball, so it might be one day.
00:06:44
Speaker 2: Yeah, indeed. Indeed, so the fair opens at what time?
00:06:49
Speaker 5: Every day fair opens at eight am and the gates closed at eight pm, So eight oh one you cannot get in. But the fair actually closes at eleven or ten, depending on the day. So Friday, Saturday, and Tuesday closed at eleven pm.
00:07:03
Speaker 6: The other days they closed it to that ten.
00:07:05
Speaker 2: So what's the disparity between eight on one? You can't get back in, So between eight and eleven, they're you know, letting people exiting.
00:07:12
Speaker 6: People exit.
00:07:13
Speaker 5: It's just one of those things for Egress is trying to kind of keep people from coming in still drive in, make sure that everybody can get out safely. And we're proving more people going out at those times than trying to come in. And there's not a whole lot you know, of people that want to try to come in that late.
00:07:29
Speaker 6: Yeah, unless you're just come into the concerts.
00:07:31
Speaker 2: Yeah, well, speaking of the concerts, but some of them we'll get to that in just a second. But some of the other opening day traditions. Okay, one of them is underway right now because I heard them when I pulled into the parking lot band aid.
00:07:43
Speaker 5: Yes, we have dozens of Central Indiana bands. It has moved around a little bit, but Opening Day has traditionally been bandai.
00:07:52
Speaker 6: We have a cool new story this year.
00:07:55
Speaker 5: Ben Davis, who hasn't been at the ban Day for fifty years, is now competing again this year, who is the reigning champion of course, is trying to come back and solidify themselves as another champion. But bandai is one of those things that are amazing for us. Then we have tomorrow, I mean just as cool traditions as well, cheerleading as well as the hot air balloons happening tomorrow at morning. So those traditions that people come to love for the fair are always going to be there.
00:08:20
Speaker 2: Yeah. What is it about the fair that just gets people so excited? I mean, you know it's been around since what the eighteen hundreds, eighteen fifty two, Oh my goodness.
00:08:30
Speaker 6: Yeah.
00:08:30
Speaker 5: So well it depends on who you are, right, So if you're a four h er, if you're a farmer, it's those livestock things that make you really feel like you're at home and you really get to compete against those other people for livestock opportunities for me growing up over in Brightwood, it was kind of a refuge for us to come out to the fairgrounds, not having very much money.
00:08:50
Speaker 6: Maybe this is the time that we actually got a chance.
00:08:52
Speaker 5: To vacation, Right, So those couple of days that we were able to go to the fair to get on rides, my sister and I, my mom and her and my father and the rest of our family got a chance to come to the fair and kind of.
00:09:04
Speaker 6: Get away from the Yeah.
00:09:05
Speaker 5: And this is for me, That's why I really love about this is seeing some of the families make new traditions, seeing some of the families be able to walk around with ease and not really have any any worries about what's happening at home right now and what's going on there.
00:09:18
Speaker 6: They can just enjoy themselves.
00:09:19
Speaker 2: Yeah. I like the way you said that, because the location here right off thirty eighth and Fall Creek, for the most part, it's not entirely minted. But you know, we're thirty eighth and Meridian, you know, kind of like the cross And so when you get here, it's like a different place inside a city, a bustling city. It's a whole different Yeah.
00:09:41
Speaker 5: Once you get and we try to enhance the fair grounds every year. So once you get, once you get inside of these gates, you feel like you're somewhere else. So I was trying to share my thoughts about this before, and I thought about Wallyworld with the vacation conversation. This is this is my Wally World. Getting my family and friends to come to this place that is magical for me as growing up, I wanted everybody else to see it. So I want them to experience coming here and enjoying something that they might not be able to see definitely throughout the rest of the year.
00:10:11
Speaker 2: Well, there's a lot of value here too. Even though you know there's there's a price, and we all have to pay prices, there's also value added things to the price and to your admission, including free concerts on the state.
00:10:22
Speaker 5: Who do we have tonight, Well, tonight we have the spinners and we have the four top you know, listen that free days me.
00:10:29
Speaker 6: But I've had the records in the playing.
00:10:34
Speaker 5: Records, records again, record in between. I got a record for my mom Saturday Mornings clean up. You know you put on those records. You know, my dad was a temptation guy. So you know, I know those motown sounds, but we have the Spinners and we have the Four Tops. Today we have some amazing UH guests. We're gonna end start today with R and B. We're gonna end with Gospel on Gospel Day on the twenty third of August. But in between we have Gene Simmons, we have some Christian on the next Sunday. We have a lot of things going on in between. So we try to hit every genre of a fan that might be able to come through the fairgrounds, give them a little something every day. But we again, who's a lot of the free stage has been enhanced this year, so it's now bigger and better. So we have a great opportunity to tonight we will be having a ribbon cutting for the new free Stage. We are welcoming everybody. We have expanded the space so hopefully you have seven thousand plus people coming to every concert every day this year, so everybody come to the concert. But we have so much that we.
00:11:31
Speaker 2: Can do for Yeah. Indeed, and in the concert the free concerts to see acts like the Four Tops, attemptees, yes with your ticket, with your teenategy, there's value at so much value.
00:11:43
Speaker 5: We have more than one hundred free things you can do. So if you go to our website any unastatefair dot com, there is a link of one hundred free things that you can do here at the fairgrounds. And we want to make sure that everybody has a great value and have a great experience here. So, you know, we understand that things go with a prime but so much are you going to see a horse? You can see some you can hang out with some butterflies, you can look at the ponies, you can hit a whiootball home run, you can want some break dancing. All of those things you can do for free here at the fairgrounds with your mission. So I think it's one of the best values of the summer.
00:12:17
Speaker 2: Yeah, it has to be. It has to be. So looking back when you were a child, not today, When you were a child, what was what was your favorite thing to do with the fair and what was your favorite I guess maybe food or ride? What was?
00:12:27
Speaker 5: So I'm I'm really simple. Corn dogs is my favorite food. I'm a traditional guy. I do try all of the new foods that we have every year, not all of them, most of them some scare me. But I'm a corn dog traditionalist, so I got to get a corn dog at least three or four times throughout the fair. I do get the foot long because I'm a big boy. A regular corn dog won't fill me up, so I get the foot long. But when I was a kid, as most kids, I like the midway, but I like to go actually play the games.
00:12:53
Speaker 6: I didn't necessarily carry a whole lot about the rise I was.
00:12:56
Speaker 5: I'm a competitor, so I wanted to go and beat something or beat somebody, so I used to I really loved the little water gun sport competition where you had to hit the target.
00:13:03
Speaker 6: I really liked the basketball hoops.
00:13:05
Speaker 5: I actually won two really big bears playing that basketball hoop thing that I think is a little harder for some people. But I was a baller back then. And the thing about that is I got the big bear and didn't want to carry it around, so I actually gave it away to a younger kid when I did that. But those are the two things that I really enjoy doing. Competing with the games was really fun for me.
00:13:23
Speaker 2: So what would you say to someone thinking about coming to the Indiana State Fair today on opening day? Because there's a buzz in the are. It's excitement, it's it's just a lot of fun, a lot of great, great things to do. What would you say to folks listening to get them to the.
00:13:38
Speaker 5: Fairs, Well, if you're coming to the fair, come now and spend some time with us. Don't come and try to rush through it. It's not something that you come in, grab your turkey leg and you leave. That's not where you're going to find the value. That's not where you're going to find the experience. That's not where you're going to find the tradition and the memories for your your life. I think you come now or whenever you come, spend a few hours with us, walk home round, catch something you've never done before. So a lot of people have those traditions, and that's fine. Go to the place where you get your elephant ear go there every year, but find something new. If you've never seen the cows, go see the cows. If you've never seen the horse, go see the horse. If you've never pet a goat and fed a goat, go do that.
00:14:17
Speaker 2: The pettings is still is back this year.
00:14:19
Speaker 6: Yeah we got one.
00:14:19
Speaker 2: Okay, that's one of my grandson's favorite.
00:14:22
Speaker 6: If he left the petties do.
00:14:23
Speaker 5: Then this year you also got to go to let him cuddle with a calf, so we have half cuddles this year next to the pony ride.
00:14:28
Speaker 6: So it's really those things.
00:14:30
Speaker 5: We always try to do something new, and this year we're letting people hugged on calves.
00:14:34
Speaker 2: Hell huh, god calves. So if people want to find out more about everything that's taking place at the Indiana State Fair, we want to remind folks that's closed on Monday. Retooling, revamping. Yes, and then you have how many you have two dollars.
00:14:50
Speaker 5: Dollars Tuesdays, we have six days of discounts, so we have two dollars Tuesdays, we have the Triple a Day, we have the Indianapolis Family, that ani Ingapolis Indians Family, we have first Responders, a Military Day, and then of course that favorite of getting your ticket out the Indianapolis Star and coming in on a day as well. So we have so many discounts and so it's not just a great value, so we have also great promotions. But yes, Indianapolis or Indiana state Fair dot com you can find everything you need. Also follow us on our social channels. That's where you get your updates if there are any closures or anything like that due to weather.
00:15:23
Speaker 6: Or DUDI party.
00:15:24
Speaker 2: Yeah, and the fair goes rain or shine unless there is.
00:15:29
Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, we go rain.
00:15:31
Speaker 5: To sign And we have a PA system that is tested every day and we have a great team that actually is prepared for weather, prepared for safety and medical. So we are working with public safety departments and all over the city, so we are ready for anything that might come. But yes, come to the fair, spend some time with us. Come on a Tuesday, Come on a Wednesday, come on a Thursday. Listen, there's so many opportunities to come. The weekends are going to be a little bit more packed, so think about planning your trip you before you come.
00:15:57
Speaker 2: Yeah, indeed, Eric, he's got us all excited and ready to come. Absolutely, So anything you want to ask you a question.
00:16:05
Speaker 3: Is there a new entrance off of forty second Street or is that updated?
00:16:10
Speaker 5: Well, no, there's no new entrance off forty second Street. Our new entrance is off of Fall Creek. We just reconstructed our gate six, so it's a lot easier to get in.
00:16:18
Speaker 2: Now that's the gate we're supposed to use it.
00:16:20
Speaker 6: Why didn't you use it? Tina? Come, yeah, okay, but I.
00:16:23
Speaker 2: Had to go down. I had to go nord to go south to get it.
00:16:26
Speaker 6: Well, you could turn left now.
00:16:28
Speaker 2: They had a block.
00:16:29
Speaker 6: They had a block to block today we got to set up so you can turn left on.
00:16:33
Speaker 2: I know it's set up, but I'm just saying it was today. For whatever reason, it was blocked, so I had to go north. Okay, but that's okay. I'm not complaining. I had parking.
00:16:43
Speaker 6: We make sure get in.
00:16:44
Speaker 2: There's other folks that don't have such a thing, so I you know, I had to go a little bit north turn around. But I think they had it because the lot was filling up very quickly and they wanted to make sure there were enough spots for people with disabilities.
00:16:56
Speaker 5: And we make it accessible so that that gate is brand new for us.
00:17:00
Speaker 2: We've constructed it nice.
00:17:01
Speaker 5: It is an and it gets a lot of larger vehicles into the fair a little bit easier. It's allowing our kiddie land to be a little bit more comfortable instead of being on some soggy ground. So it's one of those things that was part of our master plan that when last year we opened up Gate five, which is also on Fall Creek coming south, you can get into that one.
00:17:22
Speaker 6: Yes, that was opening. That's it. Yeah, that's right close to forty second Street.
00:17:26
Speaker 5: And then this year we're opening up Gate six, and hopefully next year, depending on budgets, we'll have a brand new gate one for us.
00:17:31
Speaker 2: Okay, okay. And the number of people that come through the gates every day on the average.
00:17:35
Speaker 5: Well the average you'll probably say maybe fifty or so thousand, depending on a good day. We have an eight hundred and fifty thousand people come through the fair in fifteen days. So averaging that out, you know, my math may not be mathing, but with eight hundred and fifty thousand people coming in and fifteen days.
00:17:49
Speaker 6: Is a lot of folks.
00:17:50
Speaker 5: Some of the days are larger, yeah, like those Saturdays and Sundays and those Tuesdays and a lot more people coming. And then you know for concerts and there's our people that come for special concerts like Jeene Simmons might sell out, buster the Rhymes may sell out, and then we might have you know, some other shows that might come in that people really got. But there are great days and you know, especially weather, it always help. So you know, when we are seventy seven and clear, we were ready to go.
00:18:15
Speaker 2: I you don't look like a man who has been up since one or two o'clock, because I'm thinking, you're probably not going to exit here until after eleven or twelve, so it's.
00:18:24
Speaker 5: Gonna be a while before I leave here. But listen, they had made these things called energy drinks.
00:18:29
Speaker 3: I was going to say, he's got the energy. It's like the energy.
00:18:31
Speaker 2: He's had tons of it.
00:18:34
Speaker 5: It's one of those great inventions.
00:18:37
Speaker 2: But it is opening days only one day of the fair, so the rest of the time you can just pace yourself.
00:18:42
Speaker 5: It is an amazing day and I get to do that, and I'm grateful that I get to come in and talk to all of our media partners to be able to let everyone know about what's going on to the fair opening day but also the subsequent days. However, if anyone that wants to come and talk to me, I'm willing to do that. So if it's you, anyone else from the station and the other media, I'll get up early. It's a couple of days I gotta come early, but yes, I'll be hoping.
00:19:06
Speaker 6: I'll be happy if they're around eight o'clock er.
00:19:08
Speaker 2: So I appreciate it, and I you know, I love the I love the partnership this year with the Indian Apples Indians. Yes, because that is that that's just unique, is different. I never would have thought Indian apples Indians unasy.
00:19:18
Speaker 6: I mean, let's think about it.
00:19:19
Speaker 5: Summer is a tradition of baseball and it's a fair traditions, so why not bring them both together?
00:19:24
Speaker 2: Apple pie baseball. Listen, I know there's apple pie here somewhere.
00:19:27
Speaker 6: You can find apple pie at the fair.
00:19:29
Speaker 5: Almost a few times there's a probably competition somebody's probably made now listen, they probably it's probably been sitting since Thursday. But I'm not gonna try, but I'm sure it's probably one. There's an apple pie competition, uh, somewhere in that Indiana Arts Building. But there's a lot of competitions around the fair, so we have a lot of things happening. So people again don't go into the Indiana Arts Building very much. One of those things that we would need to do as more of a community, and this is one of our friends older and Williams used to say, get our community to participate in some of the competitions.
00:19:59
Speaker 6: It's best for the Indiana arts. We have family members that like to like to.
00:20:03
Speaker 5: Knit, like to paint, that like to take photographs in order to competition in Indiana Arts. So we can get more people to be a partner of the Indianflans Fair and then you can sell it if you want. I mean a lot of our stuff actually sales. Last year we hit a record number of sales coming out of the art out of the Indianapolis Arts buildings. So you know, if you have a hobby, come experience with the figure outs.
00:20:23
Speaker 2: We well, we hope everybody's listening and that whoever's listening tells somebody else so that we can.
00:20:28
Speaker 6: Spread by to tell somebody somebody.
00:20:31
Speaker 2: There you go, thank you so much anything we forgot listen again.
00:20:36
Speaker 5: Stayfair dot com. That's where you can find all of your things. We want to thank our team. It's a great team that puts this on. We hire over nine hundred people to help us put this on every year and we only have a staff of about seventy four to seventy five people that are full time throughout the rest of the year. So we most of the people that come through the fair that work for us throughout the fairground season. Our fair season are seasonal workers and we appreciate them so much. So again, if you see someone in the blue shirt, just thank them because they are doing a job that most people don't want to do.
00:21:05
Speaker 2: Yeah. Indeed, mister Lewis, thank you so much. And we'll probably have you back again sometime before the run of the fair expires. But you, I know you will be full of energy. Have another drink. Thank you so much. And again that was mister Leroy Lewis the third. He is out here doing everything today, been here since, as he said right before four am, Director Community and Media Engagement for the Indiana State Fair, and he's quite engaging. Quite I can tell you see something on the table here, mister Lewis you like, yeah, we got stuff. We got some stuff. Yeah, and if anybody is coming out to the fair, we got stuff here on the table. We got fans, we got lanyards, we got pins. Our girl Brittany is keeping that together. We got a wheel. You can spend the wheel to see in the wheel exactly exactly exactly, so we got we got things here on the table for you. Uh, if you come and visit us, and if you want to look for us in the harvest pavilion in the rewind a VHS Revival exhibit in the Harvest Pavilion, we're directly across from the Saturday Night Fever. Saturday Night Fever. There's a stage, there's lights, there's a crystal ball, crystal dance. What do they call those, uh, disco disco balls? Yeah, yeah, a disco ball. And so we are right directly across from that. If you want to come see us. So h, So, Timman, did.
00:22:38
Speaker 3: You bring your VHS player with you?
00:22:41
Speaker 2: I did not. Those things are now, I will tell you those things are kind of bulky.
00:22:47
Speaker 3: Yeah they are.
00:22:48
Speaker 2: They are a little bulky and a little cumbersome. So no, I did not, But I do have to, uh, I must say. I was trying to figure out And by the way, before the show ends today, we're going to be able to speak with the creator curator of this exhibit and she's going to tell us all about it. But I'm trying to draw my own conclusions from what I've been able to see and I've gone through. Is really cool, it's really really cool. But I'm trying to figure out if it's movies that first came out on VHS. But then again, when you see you know, they have classics like God, you know, the Wizard of Oz and some of the other yeah, some of the others that are from you know, the thirties and forties, and so maybe those may have been some of the first classic movies to be put on VHS. I don't know. But anyway, the woman behind it all is going to join us before we end the show today to explain all of it to us. But right now, like I said, we're right across having a disco thing if we want, you know, disco a disco thing if we want it. Since National Night Out is what they call it, the musical live on stage London Palladium, So that's that's just that. That's one of the posters talking about Saturday Night Fever. I guess it went live. I guess it's a play. Oh I know the movie, Yeah, the movie. Uh, and there's uh, let's see Men in Black. I think let's see Tank Girl, David Bowie, John Lennon, Michael Jackson's Thriller, just all kinds of different things. So there they are. So before we uh, before we we got a long not a long way to go. So this time is going to go very quickly. You know we have to. Yeah, I know it already has I was looking at the clock. I'm like, oh my goodness, we're already one twenty five. One of the things I wanted to do was to catch up from where we were yesterday, which was giving away tickets to Daniel and the lions Den and the Story. We have an opportunity to do two of those, two to two of those ticket giveaways, so we're going to do the first one right about now. We got folks stopping buy and we're gonna be talking to them as well. Hey, come on, how are you doing. Don't you love live.
00:25:18
Speaker 3: Radio live the best way?
00:25:20
Speaker 2: Indeed? So Eric, I'll let you pick the number. We'll take a caller to the show number.
00:25:27
Speaker 3: Let's see, this will be for Daniel and the lions Den and the Estra Story at the Mara Theater. Let's go with caller seven, number seven.
00:25:34
Speaker 2: Collar caller number seven to the number three one seven four eight zero thirteen ten three one seven four eight zero thirteen ten. If you are the seventh caller, you will win one pair of tickets one set, one pair to Daniel and the lions Den and the Estra Story. You will be our first Winners of the Day, Caller number seven, Eric is going to get on that phone and go to work. I know you are, yep, I know the phone lines are light. I'm not there, but I can tell you I know they are. I know they're lighting up. Good luck to call her number seven.
00:26:07
Speaker 6: Eric.
00:26:07
Speaker 2: I'm gonna let you go, and I'm gonna just remind everyone today is opening Day. We are here live at the Indiana State Fair. We are inside the Harvest Pavilion, which is the site of rewind a VHS revival, a VHS revival, and it's full of memorabilia, even down to the red vines and popcorn about the era of the VHS. I mean, it's got a simulated remember Blockbuster in video? What was the other place called Blockbuster is the main one? I remember Family Video. Well, it's got a little sample like that where you could go in and rent your movies and take them back after so many days that that era of VHS is just everything VHS and then some going back. So that is where we are. We're inside the pavilion where that exhibit is or where this exhibit is, and specifically inside the building with the exhibit. We are directly across from the Saturday Night Fever Display, the Saturday Night Fever Display, the Crystal Ball dance ball. Somebody said that a few minutes going anyway, there's like a stage and it's like you're doing the disco. You're doing the thing. So we're also giving away key rings, fans, lanyards, pens and more. Our girl, Brittany is she set up the wheels, spin the wheel and get a prize. So if you stop buy our table, the Praise Indie Table A thirteen ten ninety five point one FM, stop buying, see us and take something with you when you go. So again we're waiting on caller number seven, the caller number seven to win free tickets to Daniel and the Lions. Then and the Estra Story December fifth at the Murra Theater, four o'clock start. This is going to be a good one. Eric and I talk a lot about he's on the phone. I'm gonna tell y'all we've talked a lot. We really are trying to get our heads around how they will stage that Lion's done with all the lions, and I think it's going to be very, very creative. But back to where we are, of course, we are live at the Indiana State Fair. Of course, it is opening day. Everything started with the official opening ceremony around eight point thirty at the State Fair Train Depot, the formal opening of the twenty twenty sixth Indiana State Fair and a new fairgrounds transit infrastructure basically a new train system was unveiled, so that kicked things off this morning. Of course, going on all day ban day competition. There are the preliminaries that nine this morning, and throughout the course of the day the different bands will be performing and I guess going into category staging, winning, not winning, whatever, you know, how competitions go. The finals will be tonight at eight o'clock and all of this is going to be taking place at the Hoosier Lottery Grandstand. It is one of the largest and most historic high school marching band competitions in the Midwest. It is amazing and as our good buddy mister Leroy Lewis here with the State Fair told us, we have a school returning Ben Davis High School right there in Wayne Township. Ben Davis is going to be competing in Bandai, which is something they haven't done, I believe, he said, in almost fifty years and the perennial winner, Anderson High School in Anderson, Indiana might have some competition coming because Ben Davis they don't enter competitions. I know how Ben Davis is. They don't enter competitions not planning to win. So they're gonna they're gonna bring it. So we'll see how that if Anderson is able to to to hold court so to speak, and and and support their uh, their their position as winners as perennial winners, or if Ben Davis unseats unseats them or other schools. I'm just saying this is what this is the competition that our good friend Leroy Lewis, who is the director of Community and Media Engagement out here for the Indiana State Fair. That is just one of the dynamics that he was telling us about. Also throughout the course of the day, you can, of course do the regular state Fair things. You know what you do with the State Fair. You go to rides, you go to the other exhibits, you eat the food some of it. I thought it was interesting, he said. Mister Lewis said he was afraid of you know, he's he's pretty much a traditionalist. And Eric, I have to say I pretty much am to the We're there's a Cotton Care candy trailer right in front of the Harvest pavilion, and it has cotton candy, It has the candied apples, it has the caramel apples, it has the popcorn, a lot of different flavors, butter, Chicago mix, a whole lot of different things. It has all of those things right there in front of us. Hey, how are you doing? And come on, come on? This is our good friend Carrie Black. Oh she kept moving, she kept it going, Carrie. Oh, I'll get her back later. She with indigo. She was just on our show last week. Carry was just on our show last week. A lot of folks just keep walking. So anyway, Eric, we are still awaiting the caller, the winning caller. Hey, Carrie, how are you good? Good? Good? There you go, Thank you, Britney. Britney grabbed her. Yeah, you've said hi, and I was saying, oh, come over, we love to tie. How are you doing?
00:31:59
Speaker 6: I'm doing X one?
00:32:00
Speaker 7: Thank you?
00:32:00
Speaker 2: So this has been ages since we last talked to you.
00:32:03
Speaker 8: Yeah, no, right, couple of days, just last.
00:32:07
Speaker 2: Week, right last week? So are what's going on? You guys are out here? I see you were in your Indigo.
00:32:13
Speaker 7: Yeah, sure, so we are so excited.
00:32:15
Speaker 8: So, first of all, people don't know the Purple Line runs right along thirty eighth Street and there is a station right at the State fair Grounds, So consider Indigo for your ride to the State Fair. But then Brandon new this is actually breaking news, Tina. We have we've established a parking ride, the first ever Purple Line State Fair park and ride up at ivy Tech and Lawrence, which is by our last station of the Purple Line on the northeast.
00:32:45
Speaker 7: Oh, so they've gone a giant parking lot.
00:32:48
Speaker 8: So thanks to a partnership with ivy Tech at the City of Lawrence, people can park there and ride to the State.
00:32:54
Speaker 7: Fair and not have to depend.
00:32:55
Speaker 8: This is our first time ever, first time ever unveiled this year, unveiled two days ago.
00:33:00
Speaker 2: Yes, park and ride. So there's parking ride to the fair, park and ride where else.
00:33:05
Speaker 7: That's it for now.
00:33:06
Speaker 8: So parking ride, it's just a two week, two week adventure or two week partnership to park there and ride to the fair.
00:33:14
Speaker 2: Any cost, no or just regular.
00:33:17
Speaker 8: So it's free to park, you do have to pay to ride, so's to seventy five to ride so regular seventy five per person.
00:33:23
Speaker 7: Yeah cool, yeah.
00:33:26
Speaker 2: Hey, you can't get any better than that. I mean, and you're left, you're let out right up here right.
00:33:30
Speaker 8: At the front gate. So my team, we tried it out this morning. I was going to say to well, yes, it's great. You can't beat it, So hopefully people will consider that.
00:33:40
Speaker 2: Okay, okay, okay, dokie, did you spend our wheel? I did not. Oh spind the wheel in take a prize?
00:33:46
Speaker 7: I love it?
00:33:50
Speaker 2: Said again again, Yeah, that has been hitting that a lot. Soon we'll let you cheat and again.
00:33:55
Speaker 7: Yeah, just put it all the way all right, let's just take a pen.
00:34:00
Speaker 2: I can never have enough pen never have enough pins. O. Yes, alrighty, well, thank you so much. So you've gotta be out here for a while.
00:34:07
Speaker 8: We're going to be out here till three. We're actually gathering content because we do have a partnership with the Indiana State Fairgrounds and just promote cross promotion. So we're getting some video and some photos and all the things that we can share on social media.
00:34:22
Speaker 2: So again, repeat that park and ride just for the Indiana State Fair right now, indygo.
00:34:27
Speaker 8: Yes at park at the Ivy Tech Lawrence campus up off of fifteen ninth Street and Wheeler Road. They have a giant parking lot there and it is right next to our Fort Harrison station. So then you can hop on two seventy five, ride down to the State fair Ground station here at thirty eighth Street, hop off at the main gate. You can't beat it.
00:34:50
Speaker 2: How long is it run?
00:34:51
Speaker 7: Thirty oh?
00:34:52
Speaker 8: So a bus comes every fifteen minutes Saturday, so Monday through Saturday from one am five am in the morning till one am the next morning.
00:35:04
Speaker 2: Those are good out.
00:35:05
Speaker 8: Yeah, and the bus every fifteen minutes. Now on Sunday, the service does end at ten o'clock, which the State Fair also ends at ten, but the last pick up here is at nine to forty five. So if people ride on Sunday and you do the parking ride, make sure you're out there at that station by nine forty five so you're not stranded.
00:35:23
Speaker 2: I love it. I love it, love it, love it. Thank you Carrie, and I'm glad Britney grabbed it. Yeah, you told us something we didn't know.
00:35:30
Speaker 3: That's what breaknient.
00:35:32
Speaker 2: That is very convenient and for the regular cost, I mean it's not extra or anything. I mean it's just pay.
00:35:38
Speaker 7: Yeah, there you go, can ride.
00:35:40
Speaker 2: We're getting big time.
00:35:41
Speaker 7: Yes we are. We're so excited.
00:35:43
Speaker 8: And again, we can't thank the City of Lawrence and Ivy Tech enough because we couldn't have done.
00:35:48
Speaker 7: It without them.
00:35:48
Speaker 2: I can see it expanding, Yes, I can see.
00:35:50
Speaker 7: I'm very hopeful for that. You're reading my mind.
00:35:54
Speaker 8: Maybe next we'll have two parking rides, one on the south side or on the north side.
00:35:59
Speaker 2: Yes, yes, all good for the Indiana State Fair. We love it. All right, we'll get you care. Do you have a favorite food?
00:36:05
Speaker 7: I already had my ideal pickle pizza.
00:36:07
Speaker 2: Ah, my daughter loves that. Is that good?
00:36:10
Speaker 8: It is, surprisingly and I'm not I didn't think it would be, but I love it.
00:36:15
Speaker 7: I get it every year.
00:36:16
Speaker 2: That's what she does. She she loves the deal pickled pizza.
00:36:18
Speaker 7: I got it here, Okay, once a.
00:36:20
Speaker 2: Year, it does not her. Thank you so much. Car All right, bye bye, and so Eric, do we.
00:36:27
Speaker 3: Know we know that's cool. We know that's really convening it right there?
00:36:31
Speaker 2: It is. And the generosity the hours.
00:36:34
Speaker 3: Yes, most definitely the hours.
00:36:36
Speaker 2: The hours. So I take it. We have a winner.
00:36:39
Speaker 6: We do have a winner.
00:36:40
Speaker 3: Let me uh, let's see if I can. Let's see. It's just a second here, it's like you get this to work. It's Danne. Are you there?
00:36:48
Speaker 2: Deanne?
00:36:49
Speaker 3: Dianne is with us. She is our winner of the tickets, Daniels and millions day.
00:36:55
Speaker 2: Yeay, yay, yay.
00:36:59
Speaker 3: Do you take you to get through?
00:37:03
Speaker 2: Not long at all?
00:37:06
Speaker 3: You had the magic sound?
00:37:09
Speaker 4: Yes? Yes, well I tried a number of times before and I'd almost did up, but I said no, no, go ahead and tide.
00:37:17
Speaker 2: As they say, if at first you don't succeed, try try again, try I try. And all right, well, congratulations. So who are you gonna take with you?
00:37:28
Speaker 4: I will probably take my husband?
00:37:31
Speaker 2: Oh okay, you said probably.
00:37:35
Speaker 4: Probably?
00:37:37
Speaker 2: Okay, Well, husband, be on good behavior. You got until December.
00:37:42
Speaker 3: Take that trash out every week.
00:37:44
Speaker 2: Yeah. She didn't say for sure, she just said probably, so so husband, we want you to be good. All right, Okay, you can get to go see. Is this something that you've been wanting to see?
00:37:57
Speaker 4: Oh? No, I hadn't heard of it. Sit for on the lady, but something that I think will be really good.
00:38:04
Speaker 2: I'm looking forward. Yeah, it's always a good night to be out with your husband. Take him to show a nice treat you know, and the play. I love live theater life. There's nothing like it. I mean, I probably am a geek about live theater, but I just love it. I just love it. So congratulations again, and thank you so much for listening.
00:38:25
Speaker 4: Yes, I always do.
00:38:27
Speaker 2: All right, thank you, Eric, welcome enjoy, Yeah, thank you, you're welcome.

00:38:55
Speaker 1: M let's get back to the conversation. It's Community Connection with Tina Cosby on Praise AM thirteen ten ninety five point one FM.
00:39:09
Speaker 2: And we are back. We are coming to you live for Community Connection today from the opening day at the Indiana State Fair. We are in the Harvest Pavilion inside the rewind A VHS Revival exhibit. We are directly we are positioned directly across from the Saturday Night Fever display with the disco ball. That's what it is, the disco ball.
00:39:35
Speaker 3: Disco ball, Yeah.
00:39:36
Speaker 2: The disco ball. And uh, it wasn't disco interesting it was.
00:39:40
Speaker 1: It was.
00:39:42
Speaker 3: Definitely Enter Night.
00:39:43
Speaker 2: Fever kicked off a craze, a craze and a half. I mean it was everybody was disc going.
00:39:49
Speaker 3: This going and the way people dressed at the time. And somebody said to me, last week they still had platform shoes.
00:40:00
Speaker 2: There.
00:40:00
Speaker 6: I said, you do.
00:40:02
Speaker 3: Okay, you ever were of them? They said, they are, they're thinking about it.
00:40:06
Speaker 2: I'm like, okay, you know what they say about about style, right then keep it long enough and it'll come back.
00:40:11
Speaker 3: That's true, it does at some point.
00:40:14
Speaker 2: I don't know how people walked in those platforms.
00:40:16
Speaker 3: I don't either. Those things were like, what six some of them six inches seven inches tall? How do you.
00:40:23
Speaker 2: In Saturday Night Fever didn't travolted dancing and he.
00:40:27
Speaker 3: I thought he might have. And I remember, you remember the TV show Barretta used to come on. There was a guy he had the word the bird, and I think he had goldfish in his platforms or something in the heel.
00:40:41
Speaker 2: Antonio Fargus, I think so.
00:40:47
Speaker 3: A hunky beer. I don't know what I can't think of what his actual name.
00:40:50
Speaker 2: Real name is but Antonio. But I'm not sure Barretta was the show though.
00:40:57
Speaker 3: Was it wasn't Bretta maybe not. It was something else.
00:41:00
Speaker 2: It might have been. Let me look, let me look.
00:41:02
Speaker 3: But those those platform shoes, and I think it was a goldfish in there. Yeah, and I saw in the in the show. M I don't know how people walk in them goldfish. I think it was a fish of some kind. There was just one in each shoe. I'm not gonna stand. I'm pretty sure.
00:41:21
Speaker 2: You're remembering something.
00:41:23
Speaker 3: I'm gonna have to look now. I'm gonna have to check that one out. They could be wrong.
00:41:29
Speaker 2: Okay, he wasn't in Burretta and they confused his Huggy Bears. He was Starsky and.
00:41:35
Speaker 3: Hutch Starsky and Hutch. Okay, that yes, I was.
00:41:38
Speaker 2: Bear was in Starsky and Hutch. Corretta was just Robert Blake. And he had that bird, I think the bird.
00:41:43
Speaker 3: Yeah, the bird. Yeah, he had the bird. So he didn't have a There wasn't a guy that was kind of like I guess yeah, Starsky and Hutch. Well, somebody had platform shoes that were Yeah, he was.
00:41:54
Speaker 2: A fish named rooster named the Rooster. Maybe that was him wat Way minute, Way Minute, Huggy Bear from Starsky.
00:42:01
Speaker 3: And Hutch Starsky and Hutch.
00:42:03
Speaker 2: I remember they confused him with a pimp named the Rooster who appeared on BARRETTA. Fargas has explicitly clarified that he never played that role or portrayed a pimp on Starsky and Hutch.
00:42:14
Speaker 3: Okay, see, I'm thinking maybe that it's been anyway, been a long time.
00:42:19
Speaker 2: Ago, been a minute or two, it has. So well, let's go ahead and give away because we still have we still have family four pack to give away. Next hour out here to the Indiana State Fair. Yeah, where I are, where I am, Where I are, where I are.
00:42:40
Speaker 3: I just for the run of the fair, a fair tickets. We'll do that, as you said, next.
00:42:44
Speaker 2: Yeah, they're good all the way through their twenty third. We'll do the fair next hour. But we're gonna do Daniel and the Lions then because we got to catch up. But all the food stands, you know what, it was incredible incredible willpower that I exercised. But I have to say I will probably do the tradition. I might get a corn dog on the mine.
00:43:01
Speaker 3: Now that sounds good of corn dog and you're like mustard and ketchup was just a.
00:43:05
Speaker 2: Plane mustard, mainly mustard and ketchup. I get I don't know whatever that. Yeah, I guess he put on. I don't I don't get the foot long like.
00:43:16
Speaker 3: Like mister Lewis.
00:43:17
Speaker 2: That's that's a lot of hot dog.
00:43:19
Speaker 3: That's a lot of hot.
00:43:22
Speaker 2: Okay. I just got a text from somebody. The goldfish shoes, thank you, Margie. The goldfish shoes was in the Mac. I think the goldfit the Mac, but the goldfish shoes was also in the parody. I'm gonna get your sucker, remember man.
00:43:38
Speaker 1: Yeah.
00:43:39
Speaker 3: See it's.
00:43:41
Speaker 2: Then he fell, he fell off the shoes, and the water burst and the goldfish got out. It was it was the Wayans Brothers uh thing I.
00:43:49
Speaker 3: Magic Yeah, yeah, okay, yeah.
00:43:53
Speaker 2: Now I remember seeing a parody of that, and there was this guy walking in in in high heeled platforms. Uh and uh he fell off of him and they burst and okay, people are disco dancing right now. They are dancing. Yes, they are disco dancing because the disco ball is uh is twirling. Lighting is great and you can just go right up here to the stage that they've created, so to speak, with the ball and the lighting and everything else. Now they're taking pictures posing this. Wow, people are having a good time night doing on disco. No, you're too young to remember.
00:44:40
Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm too young to remember disco and I heard about it.
00:44:44
Speaker 2: They can take one look at me and know that would.
00:44:45
Speaker 6: Be I don't remember that.
00:44:47
Speaker 2: Uh just I you know what this is probably very controversial, but in the movie I never thought Trivalt was that good of a dancer.
00:44:58
Speaker 3: Well, yeah, just he.
00:45:01
Speaker 2: Just I just like, I mean, you know, of course he was. He was hot right then and there because of Welcome Back Cotter. He was you know, he was the id guy teaching him to dance and the moves that he learned and all kinds of stuff and the way they staged it and everything. I mean, it was just like he's just the greatest. But as far as a dancers like you can have one hunt help yourself, Well you want to you want to spend the wheel to see if you or do you just want a key ring? Just a key ring? Okay, well yeah, I help yourself.
00:45:32
Speaker 3: I got a text someone said a fly guy.
00:45:34
Speaker 6: I think that it was fly guy.
00:45:37
Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm gonna get you.
00:45:37
Speaker 3: I'm going to get your That was it? Yeah?
00:45:40
Speaker 2: That who it was?
00:45:40
Speaker 3: That's what I'm told.
00:45:41
Speaker 2: Here what we do without our text. But I definitely remember that. I definitely remember fly guy fell off. It was a parody kind of you know, like airplane and yeah, a whole bunch of other ones. It was a parody like that. But let's go ahead and give away this ticket. This is uh, this set of tickets to uh huh to Daniel Daniel and the Lions. Den gonna be December fifth at four o'clock at the mara at Old National Center.
00:46:15
Speaker 3: That's what it's going to be, taking Lacey Daniel and the Lions then and the extra story. So you got some time to plan for December fifth at four. So I'll let you pick, Tina, what what number you think we should take this time? What called?
00:46:26
Speaker 2: Okay, let's say, uh, what'd you pick? Seven?
00:46:30
Speaker 3: I got seven last time?
00:46:31
Speaker 2: Yeah, you got seven. Let's go eight. Caller number eight, caller number h number crazy eight, okay, crazy number eighty. And yeah, I'm gonna let you guys know a little bit more about what's what's going on here at the Indiana State Fair and a little fair trivia while you're working the phone.
00:46:49
Speaker 3: Call by the way to you. I'm sorry, you can only win once every thirty days. If you won before, okay, so just so you know.
00:46:57
Speaker 2: Yeah, so if you won yesterday, don't call again. Yeah, their bike can go exactly, so we can't be sending everybody we can. We can only do two at a time. I admire that. I do admire that, because why not. You know, let's see if we can get two more for our friends, r two more for so and so.
00:47:14
Speaker 1: So.
00:47:14
Speaker 2: I get it, I understand, but we by conditions of our contract, we're only allowed to do to it.
00:47:21
Speaker 6: Caller number eight only two.
00:47:22
Speaker 2: Yeah, caller number eight. Indeed, caller number eight to the number three one seven, four eight, zero thirteen ten. Three one seven, four, eight, zero thirteen ten is the number. If you are caller number eight, you are the winner. So good luck, good luck, good luck. Hope you win. I hope you win.
00:47:40
Speaker 3: Daniel Lions, Dan and the extra story. Okay, I'm gonna grab some calls.
00:47:45
Speaker 2: All right, But what we're learning again, In case you're just tuning in, we are coming to you live from the Indiana State Fair. Today is opening day for the twenty twenty sixth edition of the Indiana State Fair. And it is a biggie little rain here and there, off and on a little bit of rain, but for the most part, very well attended. Just a lot of excitement in the air. A lot of the traditional opening day festivities are taking place, as well as some new ones. Traditional like Bandai, new ones like Carrie Black from Indigo had told us about park and ride up there in Lawrence and Ivy Tech Campus, So you can find out more. You can go to Indigo Dot and ned to find out more about that. But you can use up there in that area. The park and got service that is unveiled this year for the very first time, and I think Indianapolis is getting really big time with that because a lot of larger cities and some smaller cities actually have parking rides to their events and they have their public transit. So this is the first year there's only one location. But if it's successful, Carrie said the Purple line, if it's successful, then we could see it all over. So lot of things going on. But the Indiana State Fair has been held annually here in the city of Indianapolis since eighteen fifty two. Eighteen fifty two. It is one of the oldest and largest state fairs in the United States. And so there's the history there, you know, as it with any state fair, unique attractions, events, agriculture, and a whole lot of other state traditions. Now for context, if you want a little bit, the first Indiana State Fair took place again in eighteen fifty two at Military Park in Indianapolis, again making it one of the oldest ones in the United States. But initially it was in Military Park. It was in Military Park here in the city, but initially it was rotating. It was a rotating fair, and our research tells us that it would go to cities like Lafayette, Madison, Indiana. I know where that is, New Aubane, Indiana know where that is too, and Fort Wayne before for whatever reason, it permanently settled at its current location here on East thirty eighth Street. That wasn't until eighteen ninety two. So I found it interesting that other cities used to get the state fair. It started in Indianapolis at Military Park downtown, but it would rotate. Different cities would host it Lafayette, Madison, New Aubany, and Fort Wayne. Now it is permanently housed here. We on East thirty eighth Street, East thirty eighth Street, and it has been since eighteen ninety two. There are seventy two buildings. There's a six thousand sea grandstand and a one mile racetrack. We didn't talk about the racetrack very much, but Leroy Lewis had so much stuff he was wanting to talk about. But the racetrack, they raced saw horses, and I wish I knew. I think it's quarter horse, No, not quarter horses. What do you call them? Harness? Harness? Harness racing? I think they have harness racing here at the Indiana State Fair. There's a lot of horse trailers and a lot of different things that are there where people just park all up and down Fall Creek in those various parking lots. So the fair grounds covers two hundred and fourteen to two hundred and fifty acres. I don't know that seems like a big space to me, but maybe their space is bigger. But two hundred to two hundred and fifty acres is a pretty large stretch as far. We were asking about the weather. So we can tell you that there are measures in place to keep everyone safe. The fair has only been canceled due to weather just a few times in its history, including I don't know if you could guess these times, but I'm gonna tell you what the times were. It was canceled once during the Civil War, it was canceled once during World War Two, and if you can figure this out, well, no, I don't have any more tickets, but anyway, it was also canceled during the COVID nineteen pandemic. So there you go. The fair goes rain or shine. We were asking about that rain or shine unless there is lightning or other threatening weather in the area. They have a wonderful emergency alert system to try to keep everyone safe, and they have also a number of areas for people to retreat to, very all very conveniently located along the midway main street, midway every place. So you know they've gone out of their way to make sure that fairgoers stay safe regardless of the weather. But the fair goes on rain or shine unless it's inclement weather. Unless it's inclement weather or life threatening weather, and then they shut things down. But the entire fair, like from start to finish, has only been shut down a few times. The Civil War World War two and the COVID nineteen pandemic. So there's a couple of quick quick history called background things for you. The midway taste of the fairfood. Let's see oh yeah yeah, yeah, yeah yeah, gotta give you that the time. The gates at the fair open at eight am, the gates close at eight pm. The fair itself closes at eleven pm. Again. You can find everything that I've been sharing and more right here on the website Indie State Fair at Indy State Fair. For all updates, visit at Indy State Fair or Indistatefair. Indianastatefair dot com is another website at Indy. That's a huh they gave me that. Okay, oh that's for updates for different weather updates, the Yeah can you hear me?
00:54:09
Speaker 3: I can loud and clear. Yeah, I got you.
00:54:13
Speaker 2: No, no, no, no, you're not interrupted. I was just I was just sharing. So you want to take a break here so that we don't miss.

00:55:09
Speaker 3: Read three time, three times, three.
00:55:12
Speaker 4: Times, and I was number eight. So here's the funny thing. I had just I am a fan of air Guards.

00:55:58
Speaker 6: My children, my god.
00:56:00
Speaker 2: Yes, he played Angela's father and he hated Jesse. It is the stuff that rolls around in your head is amazing.
00:56:13
Speaker 4: You know it's you should know.
00:56:18
Speaker 3: I had you know, I missed it. I missed it. I missed a movie buff. I like movies. I am a movie buff. And there's a whole lot going on in my head.
00:56:30
Speaker 2: But this is TV though his Fergus is mainly known for television.
00:56:35
Speaker 3: But yeah, you said, all my children, I don't think I ever want my children.
00:56:39
Speaker 2: Well, I didn't have a choice because when I my grandmother used to watch us and I didn't see that one, but she would watch I gotta watch her. No, she had to watch her stories. She said, y'all, still, if you're not gonna go to sleep sits still so I can watch stories. And we're like, okay, So we had to just still. We didn't want yeah, we didn't want it to take a nap, but still sit still watching my stories. And it was he was also, I mean, Antonio Fargas is just he he played in Sanford and son Son Yeah, Sonny the Barbara Taylor that on Fred Sandford Legal Eagle, which by the way, was one of the episodes. I do believe that was written by Richard Pryor. If I'm not mistaken.
00:57:33
Speaker 4: He wrote, then he write like eight episode.
00:57:37
Speaker 2: I don't think he wrote eight. I think he wrote maybe two at the maybe three at the most. He didn't write eight. Uh the other guy, Yeah, Paul Mooney and ilunga Adele. I do believe Richard.
00:57:55
Speaker 4: When I think of him, I think about car wash.
00:57:58
Speaker 3: Oh yeah, car wash. That was that was big. I didn't I forgot something that's for glory round him applause for winning.
00:58:08
Speaker 2: Ah, here we go.
00:58:11
Speaker 3: And stand at the extra story.
00:58:13
Speaker 2: Okay, I was wrong. I was wrong.
00:58:15
Speaker 6: Uh.
00:58:16
Speaker 2: Richard Pryor did write two episodes of Sandford and Son along time his alongside his longtime friend Paul Mooney, The Dowry, which I did say. I was right about that. But Sandford and Son and Sister makes three. That's the other one. I thought. I thought that Richard Pryor wrote Fred Sandford Legal Eagle, But I think that one was just Paul Mooney. But anyway, yeah, he only wrote to hilarious. Yes, yes, yes, Richard, Richard. They were all they were all multi But you know what, I always just wanted to find out what I I I told Eric, I'm a geek like that. I just wanted to find out who did.
00:58:56
Speaker 3: What the way, who I can't remember.

Speaker 2: I think three times? Yeah, Civil War, World War two, and COVID. I mean that's the entire now you know it's been shut down, right, but what weather you know has shut down there too, but just totally canceled to the best of my knowledge, Civil War which you know, how could you?
01:03:15
Speaker 3: How could you? World War two?
01:03:17
Speaker 2: World War two? And the COVID nineteen pandemic, which is not hard to believe because you know, the whole planet. Yeah, oh, planet shut down for COVID nineteen.
01:03:27
Speaker 3: So yeah, yeah, And the fair started in eighteen fifty two here in Indianapolis. That's been held in Indianapolis since then.
01:03:36
Speaker 2: But yeah, was it held let's.
01:03:39
Speaker 3: See, yeah, eighteen fifty two, because it's.
01:03:42
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I think you were on the phone, but go ahead, you go ahead.
01:03:45
Speaker 3: You were on the phone with a with a winner. Yeah. It took place in eighteen fifty two Military Park, which is right downtown at the time. In eighteen fifty two the first fair and it's what the sixth oldest state fair in the country.
01:03:59
Speaker 2: It's one of the older ones. Okay, sixth old that's pretty tick that and that is pretty cool.
01:04:04
Speaker 3: I didn't know you know. And also it initially it did rotate at one time from cities like Lafayette, your hometown, Madison, New Albany, and Fort Wayne before permanently settling at East thirty eighth where it is now in eighteen ninety two.
01:04:23
Speaker 2: So what forty years it rotated roughly.
01:04:26
Speaker 3: Roughly forty years. That's amazing.
01:04:29
Speaker 2: What a jewel. And you know, the interesting thing is it's in the heart of the city. You know, a lot of a lot of fair grounds are out you know outer you know, outer areas. I know, the Marion County Fairgrounds is out. Yeah, I remember, you know where I'm from. Jefferson County fairgrounds were out in the country. These fair grounds.
01:04:47
Speaker 3: Right right in the city right there.
01:04:50
Speaker 2: Yeah, and again there's a horse, horse racing track, you know, livestock, the swine barn against these h see this, Yeah, the swine barn, that's the one. I remember I told you the name of the sponsorship name.
01:05:04
Speaker 3: Yes, you did, yet it's changed from what it was originally. And then what there was seventy seventy two buildings at the fair grounds.
01:05:12
Speaker 2: Mm hmm, yep, yep, yep. There there they are, yes, and data hunt it. So there's a lot to get to tonight. Tonight talk about a blast from the past, the Four Tops and the Spinners. Now, I know, Eric, you remember you know music?
01:05:31
Speaker 3: Come on, yeah to some degree, okaypart I've played a lot of music in my career. Huh yeah. The Four Tops, I played them. The Spinners, I've played them too, i career.
01:05:41
Speaker 2: Uh huh uh, huh huh.
01:05:43
Speaker 3: They were played at one point.
01:05:45
Speaker 2: Any any preference for either one?
01:05:48
Speaker 3: They were both very good. The Spinners, I think, Uh, one that I remember is I'll be around and uh working, working my way back to you was one that I played to. It was early on.
01:05:58
Speaker 2: I think, oh that's a good one.
01:05:59
Speaker 3: That's a good way back.
01:06:02
Speaker 2: They were all old, so smooth, the Tops Spinners, and that's when they went.
01:06:08
Speaker 3: Yeah that was a big four Tops. Uh, Ain't too proud to beg? That was one.
01:06:15
Speaker 2: Ain't too proud to beg?
01:06:16
Speaker 3: Was a temptation I'm sorry, temptation? Wait was that temptations?
01:06:20
Speaker 2: Yeah?
01:06:20
Speaker 3: Oh yeah, that was Temptations. Four Tops let me see them my parents. Of course a lot of it, I know because my parents played it.
01:06:30
Speaker 2: Yeah. How these did pre date both.
01:06:32
Speaker 3: Of us, both of us will predated. Yeah, both of us so, but I knew it from them playing it and kind of heard it then. And four Tops. I've played four Tops as what they call oldies in my career. At the time, they were.
01:06:45
Speaker 2: Oldie, Okay, I can't help myself, can help myself, honey bunch, yep, shout and there I'll be there.
01:06:53
Speaker 3: Yea, that's another Yeah.
01:06:57
Speaker 2: I played that one, the same old song and burn a Dad earned them that.
01:07:01
Speaker 6: Wow.
01:07:01
Speaker 3: Yeah, that's four Tops.
01:07:03
Speaker 2: Yeah, that's four Tops hip definitely.
01:07:06
Speaker 1: Yeah.
01:07:07
Speaker 2: Standing in the Shadows of Love. Ain't no woman like the one I got. Yep, yeap, yep.
01:07:13
Speaker 3: Yeah at the time when I got the business.
01:07:16
Speaker 2: But you know, that was back in the day when acts would dress to the nines to take the stage and they would be they would be cutting a move here, and they're so athletic, but they were smooth.
01:07:28
Speaker 3: And clean and how to dance at the time.
01:07:33
Speaker 2: And yeah, you had to know how to do all of those things back in there. But yeah, I grew up my parents listening to these, uh, these acts and things. But anyway, tonight, tonight, tonight, Tonight's Four Tops and the Spinners. Six o'clock at the Spinners and seven thirty the four tops at the Hoosir Lottery Free Stage. Uh it says here legendary national recording act, kicking off the Free Concerts series celebrating Motown legends and rock and Old Hall of famers. They are going to be phenomenal. And you know what they they're they they're they're performers. They're gonna perform.
01:08:10
Speaker 3: They will certainly will. That's true.
01:08:13
Speaker 2: They are. Everybody is. It is so funny. I wish we had I wish I had video somehow we will get our cameras soon, sooner rather than later. But the people that are walking in front of this uh this display are shaking there behind and you throw throwing their hands in the air. Everybody's doing the disco thing. It's just funny. It's just funny. It's funny. It's it's it's it's enjoying, you know. I think it evokes. It does what it's supposed to do. It evokes a lot of memories, a lot of feel good time. And this this is what it's supposed to do. Vhs are rewind unbelievable. That's what I liked about h vhs too. The rewind You could rewind.
01:08:55
Speaker 3: You could rewind them. Yeah, that's true, you could yeah.
01:08:58
Speaker 2: Yeah, so but anyway, tonight, and again the added value that Leroy Lewis was talking about as far as your ticket, because whatever ticket you pay to get in and park, there's no timing on how long you can park onlike you know, some parking areas you have to you have to wait and get your your time in very quickly because the clock is running. No, you can park here as long as you want, you know, till the fair closes. And your ticket is one price, and so you get if you if you so desire, you get two concerts free. Are two concerts included well included in the cost of your ticket, your cost of admission. So that's coming up tonight again. The Spinners at six and the Four Tops at seven thirty. So I guess since the Four Tops are last, they would be the headliner.
01:09:46
Speaker 3: Huh, that's what I'm thinking. They're the headliner.
01:09:49
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, so there's that. And so let's see, they got oh calf cuddles. This is something new?
01:09:58
Speaker 3: What you talking about that? I yeah, go ahead, I'm sorry.
01:10:02
Speaker 2: These kids get to they get to hold a calf.
01:10:05
Speaker 3: I guess calf. Okay.
01:10:09
Speaker 2: I used to wonder these prize livestock prize animals. How are you that here at the fair and they win? What happens to them to do they breed? Do they keep them and breed them until they pass on? Or do they head straight to this?
01:10:28
Speaker 3: I wonder that same thing. It's a pet for a long time, I would.
01:10:33
Speaker 2: Well, it's a project, it's a that's true.
01:10:37
Speaker 3: But I mean I wonder after they, as you were saying, after they're done with all of that, do they keep them as a pet or something else? What happens then? Good question.
01:10:49
Speaker 2: I don't know, but I have seen some of them, and they are very pristine, you know, some of them what prize winning pigs, cows and whatever else are in between. They are just absolutely groomed and they don't look real, you know, they don't look like the ones that are out there in the grass.
01:11:07
Speaker 6: Wow.
01:11:07
Speaker 3: Speaking of the stuff, you know, I guess the state far has had had a lot of record breaking notable things too, like the world's largest or the world's largest pig ever exhibited, weighing over twelve hundred pounds.
01:11:23
Speaker 2: That's a lot of baks.
01:11:24
Speaker 3: I was thinking the same thing, A lot of bacon. That's a big one, big one big yeah. Wow.
01:11:31
Speaker 2: Yeah. Leroy said that they have on the average seventy to ninety thousand people a day. It says here the largest one day crowd one hundred and seventeen thousand, not too well, two thousand and four, two thousand and four. But they've also had you know what, while we're thinking about this, we better because we got a guest coming at too. Oh yeah, we we have.
01:11:54
Speaker 3: Yeah.
01:11:55
Speaker 2: See, I told you the time goes fast. We're just sitting here.
01:11:57
Speaker 3: Talking about times.
01:11:58
Speaker 2: Here goes. But we want to give away a family four So back to you, Eric, because I had a turn. You had to turn, so it is your turn to pick. Yeah, your turn to pick family four packs. 01:13:16
Speaker 2: You gotta get that in Eric. I'm glad you remember that, because that's the part I always forget. Yeah, But I mean you would be more sensitive to that because you you're the other producer and you take all the information. I just give away the tickets, so you you handle the business.
01:13:30
Speaker 3: Hey, Eric, don't forget to mention that that's the legal thing, gotcha.
01:13:34
Speaker 2: That's the legal Yeah, And a lot of folks have to understand that there is legalities to these contracts which we do. You know, give you the tickets. We want you to enjoy them, but we got to follow the rules, yep. So not trying to be mean or anything, but not at all. One within the last thirty days. You gotta wait thirty.
01:13:52
Speaker 3: Days, thirty days.
01:13:54
Speaker 2: Other than that have added, go nor go nor caller number nine, one, seven, four, eight, zero, thirteen ten, your number nine.

And so we got some information about, well, who's been here, who has been to the Indiana State Fair? Anybody famous, anybody that we would know about. And there have been several famous visitors to the Indiana State Fair. Top of the list, certainly, not well anyway. Top of the list. Muhammad Ali, the greatest. Muhammad Ali came to the Indiana State Fair. The Jackson Five were here. I gotta believe they were performing, although I need to find that out for sure. The Beatles have been here at the Indiana State Fair. Elvis Presley, I guess he was here at the State Fair down at Market Square Arena, because if you know Elvis Presley history, you know that the final concert before he passed away was here in Indianapolis at Market Square Arenas. So Elvis came to the State Fair. Elvis came to the State Fair, and President John F. Kennedy JFK. John F. Kennedy was here visiting the Indiana State Fair. These are just names that have come through. I gotta believe Muhammad Ali was probably on a promotional thing, the Jackson five, the Beatles, Elvis, obviously you would think, have performed here, and then President Kennedy of course had come through. The one thing that we haven't talked about. I forgot to ask Leroy about that. I forgot to ask him. But the fair has a mascot as well. Do you know the name of the fairs mascot. I'll ask. Eric's talking to y'all right now. He's trying to get caller number nine. The fairs mascot is named bo Bo. Bo is the mascot, and Bo is a cow and bow has been a beloved, beloved symbol since the nineteen fifties, since the nineteen fifties Wow Bowl. The cow. I didn't know that the fair had a mascot. I've seen a lot of cows around here. In fact, we're right, we're just on the other side of the The dairy barn bar barn Bar barn by the way. We're in the Harvest Pavilion. We're just right almost at the entrance of the midway where all the rides are, and if you're riding the shuttle where shuttle stop number three, we're shuttle stop number three. So I want to let you know if you're listening or if you're on your way out here, Shuttle stop number three, Harvest Pavilion inside at the rewind of VHS Revival exhibit, directly across from the Disco Ball. I love loving these poses that everybody is striking right there on the stage underneath the Disco Ball. The Jon travolt To Saturday Night Fever movie Friend, it was a frenzy. It was a frenzy. It was huge Saturday Night Fever. So, uh, there's that. So that's where we are right now, gonna be here probably another thirty minutes or so. We're very shortly going to be talking with the person who put this exhibit together. I'm fascinated to find out what went in her mind, what she was thinking, how she was thinking, because yes, all of these remind you of the VHS era. All these movies and different attractions remind you of that three one, seven, four, eight, zero thirteen ten, three, one, seven, four eight, zero thirteen ten is the number to the show. And if you are caller number nine, you're gonna win a set of tickets to come to the fair, a family four pack, A family four pack. I love what people are telling us they're going to do with the fair tickets once they get them. Probably my you know, one of the most entertaining one was one of our callers who's said that. I said, who are you going to take or who's going with you? She said me, I'm going, she said, and I'm going to go four different times. So she likes the fare so much she is going to take herself bring herself to the Indiana State Fair four times with her for free tickets. So hey, you can use them anyway you want, anyway you want, Brittany. We also have here at our table, we have a prize wheel and people are spinning and there's somebody spinning as we speak. Yep, he just won a fan. Everybody needs a fan, right, Okay, Okay, you're welcome, You're welcome. We're getting the line here, Brittany's got the line going. So there. We have lanyards, we have ink pins, we have fans. We have key rings, have a lot of lot of cool things, you know, just a little bit of swag to go with you to put in your bag if you are carrying one here at the Indiana State Fair. I will say the the entry, the entry process is pretty simple. You just have to do You do have to go through the metal detectors, which is good. And once you do that, hope you have your what do you call it, your fitbits and your ah they're spending the wheel. Hope you have your fitbits and your Apple watches or whatever, or your phones. Even you can keep tracking your steps on your phone because I can guarantee you're gonna get steps today. But that's part of the fun, you know. The fun thing about that is when you can get your steps and it doesn't feel like you're really walking a whole lot, at least to most of us. Now some people I felt it. I can feel it, but I don't know. When you're looking around talking to people, having a nice time, visiting with your family, things like that. If your family's with you, it's fun. It's fun to get those steps in. So we have it. I think you can hear some of the fun going on right now right here at our table. Yeah, once you went goodness, Okay, there's a little trading going on, to a little bartering. Some folks say, can I trade this for that? Kind of like when you go to a restaurant and they have a special and you say, I like this, but I don't like that. Can I trade this for that? But Brittany is holding it down, and she is She's letting everybody do what they need to do. And that's what you do with the State Fair. You have a good time, boy, Eric, I really wish you could be out here with us at the State Fair because it's so much fun just sitting here. Sometimes it's fun just to sit here and watch everybody, just.
01:20:33
Speaker 3: To watch watch, watch.
01:20:36
Speaker 2: The kids enjoy themselves, watch watch watch everything nice fun. I think I've had the most fun watching folks jump on this stage and strike and strike a pose. If one person's done it, it's been about fifty that have done it, standing there underneath the disco ball with their hands, you know, striking the post.
01:20:57
Speaker 3: That's nice. That's very nice.
01:20:59
Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, And for all the Travolta fans, I did not mean to. I have to say I was not trying to a fan. I just thought he looked like he had been taught to dance, you know.
01:21:10
Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I know he.
01:21:13
Speaker 2: Had been taught how to dance. And that's fine, that's fine. Whatever work for the movie, you know, whatever work for the movie.
01:21:18
Speaker 3: It did well. Movie did well. He did well too.
01:21:21
Speaker 2: He made a lot of money, he did. He's a nice guy too.
01:21:24
Speaker 3: I did the same thing.
01:21:26
Speaker 2: But here's the thing, though, unlike the great dancers in movies of you know, just just great dancers. Historically, that was the only movie he danced in, wasn't it.
01:21:36
Speaker 3: I think so. I think that was only one that I can remember.
01:21:39
Speaker 2: Oh, maybe I should say he was no Fred Astare.
01:21:42
Speaker 3: Yeah, he would probably say the same thing.
01:21:44
Speaker 2: That he wasn't Gene Kelly or any though he was. He was taught to dance. But it was enough to feed the beast, so to speak.
01:21:52
Speaker 6: Certainly was and get it, get it all done.
01:21:56
Speaker 2: Oh okay, okay, well I told you, I told you, I told you. Did we give them away?
01:22:01
Speaker 3: Oh we're giving something away out there too?
01:22:03
Speaker 6: Okay?
01:22:04
Speaker 2: No, no, no, no, no, no, the family four package we did.
01:22:08
Speaker 3: We did with me? Yeah, oh yeah, okay, yes, let's go. Do you want to go? To the phone. Let's go to the phone.
01:22:14
Speaker 2: Yeah, let's go to the phone.
01:22:15
Speaker 3: We've got Lorraine Jackson. Lorraine, are you there?
01:22:21
Speaker 2: Scared me?
01:22:21
Speaker 6: Eric?
01:22:22
Speaker 2: I thought, how are you? I thought? I thought I I thought I was, you know, like, do do do do do o?
01:22:27
Speaker 3: No, no, no, I thought you were talking to somebody else there. I said, oh, no, no no.
01:22:31
Speaker 2: The curator of this this wonderful exhibit just stepped up.
01:22:34
Speaker 3: Okay, great, Oh yeah, we've got got her winner. She's here at Lorraine Lorraine.
01:22:39
Speaker 2: Congratulations, all right, all right, congratulations. You're so welcome. You're so welcome. So how are you going to do this thing? How are you going to spend your tickets?
01:22:50
Speaker 4: If I could use it tonight, I would see. I guess I'll have to wait.
01:22:57
Speaker 2: Oh but I want to tell you.
01:23:01
Speaker 4: I remember when you used to do the news, and I'm glad to see you still kicking.
01:23:07
Speaker 2: It's just not as high, yep, still kicking, just not as high as they say, well, thank you, thank you so much. Our news was a nice chapter. Radio is a good one.
01:23:18
Speaker 10: So yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, And I want to say y'all to Vosa was dancing for a Christmas time for the Macys Santa or whatever.
01:23:30
Speaker 4: He did pretty good.
01:23:31
Speaker 3: Oh okay, yeah here, I had no idea.
01:23:36
Speaker 2: All right, didn't either for the Macy's Christmas thing.
01:23:40
Speaker 3: So you learn something every second.
01:23:42
Speaker 2: You really do. You just gotta be real careful what you sir.
01:23:47
Speaker 8: No.
01:23:47
Speaker 2: I I watched the movie. Everybody everybody watches them. I watched the movie. I saw it. It was it was entertaining.
01:23:53
Speaker 3: It was entertaining.
01:23:55
Speaker 4: Anyway, I'm thrilled to Wednesday's tickets.
01:23:58
Speaker 2: I am okay, well, I'm thrilled that you listened. I'm thrilled that you won. And uh, you know, there's some more free concerts coming up. There's a lot more coming up, so hopefully you'll get a chance to take advantage of some of those. Okay, oh we will, thank you so much.
01:24:12
Speaker 4: Thank you guys.
01:24:13
Speaker 3: You're welcome.
01:24:14
Speaker 2: Thank you all right, thank you, joy welcome. Bye bye day, bye bye. We're gonna come back. And when we come back, we're going to talk to the person behind this amazing exhibit. Rewind a VHS revival right after.
01:24:30
Speaker 1: This, let's get back to the conversation. It's Community Connection with Tina Cosby on Praise AM thirteen ten ninety five point one FM.
01:24:45
Speaker 2: Thirty years. It's like playing music for me to come on the air. You know what is that a hint?
01:24:52
Speaker 6: Is that a hint?
01:24:54
Speaker 2: Yeah? I think that's a hint. And you know what Eric I was talking. You know, we were saying that we were going to talk to the curator and co owner Rewind a VHS revival, and she and I got to talk much. I forgot I'm supposed to do a radio show here.
01:25:08
Speaker 9: You know, Joy, we were having a coffee chat.
01:25:14
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, Joy, for your curator and co owner of the rewind of VHS revival. We like revivals. This this, this whole area is fascinating. And Joy, I was telling you that where you've got us seated, we're right under the you know, the disco ball and the stage and the lights and everything. We are getting some hilarious, hilarious dance move I was telling I was telling my producer back at the studio, Eric, there was one little boy and his dad was taking his picture and he was flossing, you know, and his dad stopped him and said no, yeah, and then took a picture of him with you know, with the pose from Saturday Night for you, the epic pose, So welcome, Thank you, for joining you guys coming down and this is phenomenal. It makes me smile. Is creating Look at that, it's creating good vibes. People are having a ball. What went into it? What were your thoughts?
01:26:09
Speaker 11: So the instigator behind all of our shows we have. This is a sister show to our exhibit we had last year at the stay Fair called the Art of Music Experience, where we did a Vinyl Revival and we have a collection of close to one thousand hand painted works that were all displayed in the eighties and nineties and they promoted album releases that were coming out VHS's, movies that were going to VHS DVD, and they hung at you know, record shops, clubs, video outlets, all those places to tell people these these movies or albums were coming out. So we had so much fun here last year. Apparently they did everyone did here too, so they had us back, and so this year we have rewind a VHS revival and it showcases our movie collection and so there's about close to one hundred handpainted works in here that are all themed around movies. As we were talking earlier, it's classics all the way to risky business.
01:27:11
Speaker 9: It's definitely like eighties nineties themed, because.
01:27:14
Speaker 11: That's when all of these weresplayed and shown, and these are the originals that everyone's.
01:27:20
Speaker 9: Looking out on the walls.
01:27:21
Speaker 2: Yeah.
01:27:22
Speaker 11: And then, as you mentioned, we've got the John Travolta cut out here, the three D cutout that's eight feet tall, and it inspired us to create a scene and a set for people to, you know, to do their thing, to dance on the disco and floor dancing.
01:27:39
Speaker 2: They have done. Dancing, they have done, So tell us what was it like, give us a let's go back to the you say, the eighties and nineties.
01:27:48
Speaker 9: Yeah, so, well the fun part.
01:27:51
Speaker 11: I remember not to date or age myself, but you know, I grew up in the vinyl and VHS era. So our goal here with you walk into the exhibit and you walk into a mock rewind video store that feels like you're back at Blockbuster or any independent video store that you might have lived down the.
01:28:08
Speaker 9: Street from, and it takes you back to.
01:28:11
Speaker 11: That Friday night when you didn't sit on your couch and say what am I going to stream?
01:28:16
Speaker 9: You went to the video store. You walk the aisles.
01:28:19
Speaker 11: Sometimes they were out of what you had, sometimes they had it, but you had those moments with other people or your friends that you were with and you went and it was a thing. It was an experience, a community experience, and we're bringing you back. So you're introduced into that, and then you proceed to wander through interactive moments. We have a live painting area where we've got three Indianapolis artists that will be painting. It's Erica Parker, Raphael Caro, and Andre Parnell and they're gonna be doing King kN Godzilla and.
01:28:55
Speaker 2: Oh I loved it. He's King Kong and Godzilla crazy. Okay, So well you need to get him over here. He's local's local.
01:29:03
Speaker 11: Okay, Well he's got to be here then. And then we're kind of tying into the baseball theme of.
01:29:08
Speaker 9: This year's Farren.
01:29:09
Speaker 11: We've got Andre Parnell painting the Jackie Robinson story, which is going to be amazing. And the point of all that is too so people can watch art coming to life in real time, because that's essentially what all of this collection, all of our collection, that's how it was done. And so it's a nod to artistry and.
01:29:31
Speaker 9: Just the talent and skill behind that. And so as you wander around the exhibit.
01:29:35
Speaker 11: The other thing that we draw attention to, similar to how we drew attention to the designers of album covers and a vinyl revival for our rewind show, we draw attention to the designers of movie posters that are often uncredited.
01:29:50
Speaker 2: So you know, that.
01:29:51
Speaker 11: First image you see of a movie before it's even out, that inkling, that teaser, that first visual that tells you what it's.
01:29:58
Speaker 9: Going to be like and gets too excited.
01:30:00
Speaker 11: That was often done by independent artists, and we bring them to the forefront, not.
01:30:05
Speaker 2: The studio ORNs.
01:30:07
Speaker 11: Not necessarily, yeah, oftentimes they were, and we go to great lengths to research that, and if there is a person attached to that accolade and that credit.
01:30:19
Speaker 9: We find them and their names are in here.
01:30:21
Speaker 2: Yeah, because we just we believe in artistry.
01:30:24
Speaker 11: We believe in preserving the collection and a lot of it. You know, on the movie side, it's just coming out to play. It's been in storage for twenty five thirty years.
01:30:34
Speaker 9: The dance office happening again in front of us.
01:30:37
Speaker 2: You know what you said something that is so so true about the vibration around the VHS era, Because I remember just when you said that, this memory came flooding back that on Friday nights for a special we do movie nights and it would be us and the kids and we would go to the video store and they, oh, we get to pick out one for our and then we would pick out what we wanted and they would get to pick out there and we would sit at home and you know, get the we'd get the extended you know, because you could stay keep it three days. Wow, that was big. But everybody was excited about the movie that you're gonna get and you know, sometimes even the treats that were there that might have been on sale because we do on sale. But I just thought about that. That was a whole thing because now folks look on their phone and stream and watch on their phone. You don't even watch communally like the It's changed that quickly. It's not an.
01:31:31
Speaker 9: Event, you know, it's not an experience.
01:31:34
Speaker 11: And and so what we try to do and the collection actually, if it could talk, that's what it told us. That's what it wanted it to do, you know, us to do with it and to.
01:31:44
Speaker 9: Really just you know, let's bring people back together.
01:31:47
Speaker 11: This is why we love the fair market because you get you get the little the little ones and the grandmothers and aunts and uncles and brothers and the family, you know, and you get community.
01:31:58
Speaker 9: And we love sharing this collection with people.
01:32:03
Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, and it's a collection. I was trying to explain it and Eric, are you there? Are you there? I'm here, Yeah, this is our producer, and I was telling him, you know, in between breaks, it's it's all the fields. It's all it is. It just evokes that because you'll look at something and you'll smile and say, oh yeah, we're smiling more than anything though, under here underneath his disco fall, because everybody people want to dance and have a nice time. How great is.
01:32:33
Speaker 11: It to see that, you know, the life is what it is and and you're just you're reminded that people.
01:32:40
Speaker 9: Yeah, people just need to dance it off.
01:32:45
Speaker 2: Yeah, just just cast your care and just have a good time.
01:32:49
Speaker 11: And that's what we try to create with these shows is really we want you to walk in the door. The lighting, the vibe, it's all intentional. It's it's meant to be a journey, and you know what, you forget about whatever for a while and you and what we love. One of my favorite things to see is I people watch a lot because I love people, and I see people that I can tell don't know each other, and they're they're talking and their pointing and they're having a moment. And so our whole thing is we want to give people moments, you know, moments together with complete strangers. But you go, oh, no, we're not strangers because we're both pointing at that Star Wars logo, you know, freaking out at our our you know, passion for it or whatever.
01:33:31
Speaker 9: And you just gotta love that. It's real, it is, and you just can't you can't script that.
01:33:36
Speaker 2: I saw some people their lies eyes lit up, not lies, their eyes lit up. The Star Wars music came on, and they're like, oh, where is it? They started following the music. They didn't necessarily see what, you know, the exhibit, but they heard the music and they started following the music because again the memories and everything that that it evoked.
01:33:55
Speaker 9: Yeah, yeah, we.
01:33:57
Speaker 11: Had Okay, so funny thing you just triggered in my mind this morning when we first opened. We have an exhibit I mentioned earlier. We try to focus on the designers of album of a movie posters, and we have an exhibit spotlighting a designer by the name of John Alvin. And although you don't know his name, I'm gonna tell you you for sure no posters that he's designed, everything from Blazing Saddles to ET to a Laddin to the Lion came to the color purple too.
01:34:27
Speaker 9: I mean, on and on. The list goes hundreds and hundreds.
01:34:30
Speaker 11: Of of you know, all time favorites, and ET, the theme from ET came on. And then someone came around the corner to the entrance of his eximit and.
01:34:41
Speaker 2: Screamed, just screamed, just screamed, just screamed, because there's.
01:34:45
Speaker 11: A huge ET sketch that he did as a as sort of a part of the evolution of what ultimately.
01:34:52
Speaker 9: Became the ET poster.
01:34:55
Speaker 11: And we worked with his family to you know, sort of delve into the archive and really show some of that like raw creatives sketches and chicken scratch and stuff of how how the logo came about. How you know that somebody, a person did that, and yet we all now look at that and it's it's a touchstone.
01:35:17
Speaker 2: Yeah.
01:35:18
Speaker 9: Yeah.
01:35:19
Speaker 2: What are your thoughts on the revive interest in vinyl, the renewed interest in vinyl.
01:35:25
Speaker 11: I you know, it's interesting for vinyl and for vhs. We've seen that, and it's even happening with the younger generation who didn't grow up with any of that. And you know, we have Indie CD and vinyl here. We had them last year at our music show, and they I think people want that tactle, they want that physical experience.
01:35:45
Speaker 2: We live in.
01:35:46
Speaker 11: Such a temporary world where you know, the story pops up on Instagram and then it's gone, and then you know these these blips and blops and and and it's great and we all have a good time at it, but it feels very temporal, and so I feel like it's a matter that people want. They want to have it, they want to hold it, and we're seeing even that people want to collect it.
01:36:12
Speaker 9: And you know, I mean.
01:36:14
Speaker 11: There's video stores popping up again, small little video stores that are now showing they're trying to have little areas where they can actually show movies on a Friday or Saturday night. So I kind of love it because I think that the kind of stuff we were talking about earlier about being in a generation where that did happen, and then now it's swung so far to people are very in their silos, on their phones and in their cars and you know, doing their thing. And again, which I said, is we all embrace so much of technology and the positives of it, but as far as the social part and the community part of it, that really it really takes a little chunk out of that, you know.
01:36:55
Speaker 2: Yeah.
01:36:56
Speaker 11: And yet when you're standing next to somebody and you're showing them you're video collection or your album collection, or you're watching a movie and hanging out.
01:37:04
Speaker 9: There's just that energy, is there?
01:37:06
Speaker 2: Yeah? You know?
01:37:07
Speaker 9: So I feel you right now sitting across from you.
01:37:10
Speaker 2: I feel you do. I feel you're energy. So when you put when you put this together. Uh. And and now that you're people watching and looking at folks going through and experiencing uh, everything that have been that has been put together. Is this what you thought would happen, what you expected? Or is it? Is it? You know?
01:37:28
Speaker 9: You can only hope for it.
01:37:30
Speaker 11: And then there's the nervous moment of when you open the doors. And but you know, I just default to being a lifelong lover of you know, a vast diverse group of people and immersing myself in entertainment and knowing being in spaces where I feel good and connected. Yeah, and so we just try to create that again and trying to make that space and when you see it happen, that's epic. You know, that's that's my blockbuster moment right now.
01:38:01
Speaker 2: You know, I love the fact that you say you like the fair space because that's exactly I mean. It's once a year folks get together, they do things that you know, hey, this is the Fair, you know, it's one.
01:38:11
Speaker 9: Yeah, it's so community based.
01:38:12
Speaker 11: Yeah, everybody here is so wonderful to work with and so supportive and so into anything crazy that we want to do in here. They just they just they just okay, yeah, well what do you We'll make it happen.
01:38:25
Speaker 2: So I'm gonna you got the mic invite everybody out to the exhibit.
01:38:28
Speaker 11: You know, tell folks, all right, everybody, first of all, come to the Indiana State Fair.
01:38:33
Speaker 9: It's amazing.
01:38:35
Speaker 2: It is.
01:38:35
Speaker 9: It is so impressive.
01:38:37
Speaker 11: You can just spend the entire day here and do not miss rewind a VHS revival at the Harvest Pavilion. Come in, hang out, get lost, have some moments, uh, you know, dance on the Sarta fever thing, spend some time in the in the video store, get a quaint with all these people who have designed these epics of your life. Rank your favorite poster and the ranker activation you know, visit indie CD and vinyl and pick up something from their vinyl or movie memorabilia collection in there and just really, you know, look at the person next to you and realize you got a lot in common.
01:39:19
Speaker 2: Yeah, that's it. Thank you so much, and congratulations on this exhibit. It is a feel good thing. It's a feel good moment. The fair is a feel good time. So thank you for doing it.
01:39:29
Speaker 9: Right on, appreciate it, Thanks for being here.
01:39:31
Speaker 2: Yeah, indeed, Well we're going to be back, I'm sure at some point in time, and you're gonna be here. This exhibit is going to be up through the course of the fair.
01:39:39
Speaker 9: Yep, it's up through the twenty third.
01:39:40
Speaker 2: Through the twenty third alrighty, thank you. Do you have a website? We do.
01:39:44
Speaker 11: It's artimusic Experience dot com and you can find more about the collection designers, all of the artists we work with, and where we're headed to next. And again, we're so glad to be back in Indianapolis at the Indiana State Fair.
01:39:59
Speaker 9: We just we love it here. You're you're good people were you based out of southern California.
