Ky Wright: Hey guys, my name is Kyle Wright, like he said. ⁓ I play football at Harding University. ⁓ and I coach as well. ⁓ but this past year, you know, we we came up a little bit short against Ferris. But, you know, this coming up year I think this this'll be it. We'll make a huge run and shock a lot of people.
Payton Dunn: Which you know Harding has done it before, so it's not like it's this far fetched thing. ⁓ were you were you on the team? I I think you were on the team when they won it, right? Yeah. Yeah, so you know how it is, you know how it is to go back. ⁓ you had what a ninety yard touchdown in the national championship game too?
Ky Wright: Mm-hmm. Twenty twenty three. Yeah, yeah, I did actually. ⁓ it was I wanna say it was like right before half. ⁓ I thought that was gonna be the turning point too. We were down two touchdowns. ⁓ I took it back, we scored my okay cool, we we're in the game, you know, one touchdown down now. Defense get one stop and then you know it's a top ball game. ⁓ that was a that was a thought process, that was a mindset. But it definitely was still a surreal moment.
Payton Dunn: Yeah, I feel like going into the locker room after running one back like you had to feel like the big dog. You're like, Yeah, let's get going I could only imagine. But, you know, I wanna keep it to like your background, right? You're from Little Rock, went to Robinson High School. So can you talk about like growing up in Arkansas playing football?
Ky Wright: Yeah. Yeah, so I went to Robinson once I made it to high school. ⁓ so tenth, eleventh, twelfth grade. ⁓ but before then I was in a small town called Beardon, which is like South Arkansas. ⁓ and football no matter where you go, football is huge, right? ⁓ and growing up I just always like seen my older cousins ⁓ playing for the high our high school team at the time and it was just like I knew that's what I wanted to do. ⁓ those moments were like surreal moments. To me, just because like those were people that I always looked up to. I thought they were superhero heroes, you know, like those were the greatest figures at the time. ⁓ but like as I progressed and I got older and I got to be exposed to more like those still heroes, you know, that that never changed. ⁓ but for myself, I kind of started to envision a little bit more and once I got to Little Rock, ⁓ it was kinda like sky's the limit, in which here it was kind of ⁓ like new guy in but I needed to come in and kinda like prove myself right away. ⁓ and I feel like that's kind of what I did. ⁓ and then I ended up breaking my thumb my junior year. So after I it which weird injury but you play quarterback and you break your right thumb, you can't throw a football, you know? ⁓ so at that time it was like okay, cool transition, play a little receiver, play a little ⁓ corner ⁓ and just kinda like do what you can ⁓ to stay relevant, stay in stay engaged and stay within the team. ⁓ and then senior year you come out, you know, and we lost to Pulaski Academy. ⁓ for the people that don't know, Pulaski Academy is ⁓ a big time powerhouse in Arkansas. ⁓ they they are they are and always have been the guys ⁓ in Arkansas along with Brian. but ⁓ we I feel like we had a good shot to, you know, win that game. The way that it started off, ⁓ it w we just didn't play our brand of ball. ⁓ but as the season progressed, w that was the only game we lost that year. And I told my dad that summer, I like we we are going to win the state championship. ⁓ Jose had did it the previous year, so my sophomore year. ⁓ they did it then, and then the next year it was like we ended up losing to Stuttgart. and it was just ⁓ that hurt. it really hurt. I never felt that way after a loss before. ⁓ and that kind of was a a different toll to me. ⁓ and so it's just like after that you go back to the drawing board, you do each and everything that you can to ensure that ⁓ you don't come short of your goal again. ⁓ and going into that season, we all blood, sweat, tears, hours upon hours of just grinding all summer long, ⁓ all spring long. ⁓ after practices on Sundays, Satur excuse me, on Saturdays, like it was just you you gotta figure it out, you gotta go get it by all means. ⁓ because like at the time we didn't really have any huge names on our team. ⁓ like no guy we had ⁓ a tackle, Lamarion Harris, which he was committed to Arkansas. He went up there, played a few years. He's at the University of Oklahoma now. ⁓ like outside of that we didn't have any like star names. So it's like we have to show them that we are exactly who we say we are. regardless of whatever the names are. ⁓ that year I played quarterback, I played receiver, ⁓ I played corner, ⁓ kick return, punt return, like whatever it is that needed to be done, I was out there trying to get it done and make it happen. but like it was also it was a really, really encouraging thing, ⁓ as we progressed through the season because yes, I'm out there doing that, but then ⁓ our team was like so close knit ⁓ that I could count on guys to do their job every single time. Right. Like it it wasn't ⁓ me going out there to be a hero, you know, like it was ⁓ some everybody contributed, everybody played their part. ⁓ so yeah, that was definitely another big time moment. ⁓ but it was fun. It was fun. I I miss high school days sometimes. It was ⁓ it was a lot of fun and ⁓ it's still to this day fun to just go back and watch and see kids grow and compete. It's amazing.
Payton Dunn: Yeah. I mean you've almost hit unk status, so ⁓ I know I am because I was look I was like, Yeah, we lost ⁓ Stunt Garden basketball like my junior year, senior year and I'm like going back and thinking no when the hell was it's like twenty eighteen, twenty nineteen. I'm like ⁓
Ky Wright: Yeah. Yeah. It's crazy.
Payton Dunn: ⁓
Ky Wright: ⁓
Payton Dunn: ⁓ ⁓ have utilized your four years so far in college to the best of your ability. ⁓ you go over like ⁓ what type of degrees you have got? And I say degrees plural for the audience. ⁓
Ky Wright: So ⁓ I started off this past May, May 2025, I got my bachelor's in strength and conditioning. ⁓ and then December 2025, I got my master's in strength and conditioning. ⁓ and then now this coming up December, I have my master's of business as well. ⁓ and yeah, man, like so coming in, I already had a few college ⁓ credits and things like that. ⁓ but We also had an accelerated program where it was like, you know, it you could speed it up a little bit if you wanted to. ⁓ and then so I already kind of like came in and took the strength conditioning route just because before I knew I wanted to be a strength coach. ⁓ like I knew I w wanna stay around sports. ⁓ so that was kind of the path and the idea that I wanted to take. ⁓ but it just I don't know, it was like a the way that God set everything up, it was it allowed me to be able to come in, hit the ground running and just like knock things out back to back to back. ⁓ the semester before I graduated ⁓ in twenty twenty five, I actually ⁓ I took I wanna say twenty one hours that semester. ⁓ it wasn't like ⁓ most people be like school is just really, really hard and you know, I don't I don't know how I'm gonna do it. But like for me it was just like okay it it's just something that I set my mind to. I'm gonna do it, I'm gonna figure it out. And you know, you just kinda go from there. ⁓ and there were there were things that happened that popped up and was like, man, like this is is this what I wanna do? Is this how I want to do it and all of those things. ⁓ like I had heart surgery in twenty twenty three. Had two heart surgeries. ⁓ had a shoulder surgery when I first got to Harding and then ⁓ I had another shoulder surgery after the heart surgery in twenty twenty four. And then I just ha recently had another shoulder surgery this April. ⁓ so it's just like there there was a lot of things going on, but ⁓ God you could definitely see God at work in the midst of it. He allowed me to keep the main thing the main thing no matter what else was going on. ⁓ and to stay focused. And I feel like whatever it is that people want to do, whether if that's you wanna go to college and get degrees, if you want to go out into the workforce and work toward whatever goal it is that you're trying to accomplish, if you can set aside the emotions and the pride and all of those things and understand that there are gonna be ups and downs, but you continue to have faith and you continue to put the work in day in and day out, anything is possible. ⁓ and it's just that simple. ⁓ yes, it's harder in the moment while you're doing all of it. ⁓ but if you can fall back on your roots ⁓ and understand that the main thing has to be the main thing and just keep it basic and stay consistent, it it can all happen. It can all play out how you want it to. You just gotta be patient.
Payton Dunn: And d did not know about that long list of surgeries you've had there. That is ⁓ quite extensive.
Ky Wright: Yeah, it's it definitely has been a process. it's ⁓ it's definitely been a big mental aspect to and mental challenge to kinda like overcome. ⁓ but it's adversity. ⁓ and I I learned back in high school when my coaches said there are three phases of adversity. It's either going through adversity, getting ready to enter into adversity, being in the midst of adversity, or coming out of adversity. But at some point there's all like you're you're always dealing with it, right? And so At the end of the day it's just about how do you handle it. Do you let it handle you or do you handle it, you know? ⁓ because some people they they're face with it and they fold and then some people, you know, you rise up to that and and you beat it and you keep going. ⁓ but the the the thing with that is just you just have to keep showing up. Like, as long as you don't quit, you'll always win. So just don't quit, you know? Like and it sounds very simple. ⁓ it sounds easy, but the the taxing part it part isn't necessarily the physical getting up and going. It's just you gotta tell yourself, man, you gotta have the the mentality to just keep going and keep working, ⁓ and just let it all come into play. ⁓ because it's like for me with my injuries, I feel like my injuries aided in me being able to get so much school done. ⁓ 'cause there was some classes that were definitely a lot harder than others, ⁓ and that required a little bit more time, a little bit more effort. It was like you just gonna study like you was going to practice. Right? Like I'm going study for two, two and a half hours, ⁓ outside of class and along with practice and workouts and all of that, but like you gotta pick and choose what it is that you wanna do and you know what I'm saying, figure out how to get it done. ⁓ but yeah, the the injuries have definitely they they they've been there. ⁓ they have altered the thought process a little bit. ⁓ but at the end of the day I feel like it's just a good testament to story. 'Cause even now You go forward and you coach people. I had a conversation with the guy other day. He ⁓ had labrum surgery just like I did. ⁓ which this is my third one, but we were talking or whatever and it was like, dude, like I just don't know. Like I don't know if I'm supposed to still be doing this, like, you know, X Y Z, whatever. And for me to him, or from me to him, the conversation was just, Man, you have no idea where God is gonna take you. You have no idea, ⁓ How you'll be blessed from this, but the one thing that you can't do is quit. Like, is if you have a plan, stick to your plan. Regardless of the the rocks that come up in the road and all of that, run them over, go through them, whatever you gotta do, but stick to that plan. Right. And sometimes we have to alter our plan a little bit, but that's where that's where the basics and the foundation comes from. Because if you keep the main thing, the main thing, you can still get there, right? And so if you tell me that your goal is something sports related and hey like I wanna get to this peak level ⁓ in in the sports realm in sports field, right? Then that's fine. You can do that. But you have to keep that the goal. When you show up to rehab and you don't feel like doing rehab, what is it that you're what's your goal? Right? Like am I just here to play football for a couple of years and then bounce, you know what I'm saying? Then go figure life out some other way? Or am I trying to get somewhere within this field, right? And so, ⁓ it by the end by the time we made it to the end, he like, Man, like I just I n I never thought about it like that. It was always a woe instead of it being an opportunity. ⁓ because challenges always come up, but it's either an opportunity for you to grow or it's gonna be a a block in the road and you're gonna fall back, right? But we never stay the same. You you can't wake up and be the same person every day 'cause you got worse, right? So we're either going forward or we're going backward, right? No no stagnant. But yeah, that was the that was kind of it with that. But Yeah man. Injuries they're rough and it sucks. They all suck. I can't say a time that ⁓ I've been happy that I was injured or had a surgery or anything like that. But I don't know. God always has a way of making a blessing out of something. So just kinda gotta stay the course and stay steady.
Payton Dunn: Yeah, I've had three ACLs myself, so I definitely understand ⁓ doing it. And it's like you kinda once you heal, you're like, dang, I miss all that time I had when I was just doing rehab, but you don't really know. I I I wouldn't get injured again. But I do know another career you can have definitely in public speaking and motivational speaking. I I see it. I see it in there. So, you know, we'll just go into like
Ky Wright: Yeah.
Payton Dunn: Harding has a couple of things, but you know, outside of riding foilers and watching anime, like what do you do outside of football?
Ky Wright: ⁓ like I said, I coach. But I I'm really a family guy. I love being around my siblings, my parents. ⁓ any chance I get, I go home. ⁓ but I mean in in Cersei it was more so of ⁓ just find time to like get out of nature and just no matter if even if that's just something as simple as playing pickleball, ⁓ or going for a walk or, you know, something like that, just because I I try to enjoy the different moments of the different seasons that I'm in. ⁓ just because once that moment is gone, you don't get it back, right? And so ⁓ especially I was huge on that this past semester. ⁓ ever I'm telling you pickleball, walking, ⁓ coaching, like whatever it was that I could do to just soak it up. I mean, like intramural sports, intramural basketball, ⁓ I I'm I'm a guy that that likes to do a whole lot. Like yeah, I love video games, of course. ⁓ I feel like a lot of people do. But it it's more for me it's more so just just about finding something to beat in the moment with the people that you care about. ⁓ and so like that's like now, ⁓ probably when we get off here ⁓ actually probably tonight, but like I play the game a little bit, but not necessarily for me, but me and my little brothers that's what they love to do. So I'm a carve time out to figure how to spend as much time with them as I can, you know. So I'll probably say main things, family, enjoy the moment and help somebody, man. Get out and be a presence, you know.
Payton Dunn: So what games do you play?
Ky Wright: ⁓ right now I'm heavy on MLB the show, but it also just came out. ⁓ I'm a two K guy. I love two K. ⁓ I only play on the even years though, so like twenty, twenty two, twenty four, twenty six, right? Twenty seven I probably won't play just because two K has this weird thing where the odd number games are normally the lesser game and the evens are better. I don't know why it's like that, but that's just been my experience. ⁓
Payton Dunn: I started with two K thirteen, like that was the first one I bought when it came out. So I might be on the opposite side of that argument.
Ky Wright: Yeah. That's valid. That's valid. It's a I don't know man. It's it's crazy. but I I'm big on GTA. I cannot wait for GTA six to come out. ⁓ I even bought stock. Man. I even bought stock in it though. Like I I think it's gonna be huge. I think it's gonna be huge. ⁓ but what else do I have done? ⁓ Call of Duty. Huge, huge, huge, huge Call of Duty guy. ⁓ in which
Payton Dunn: Don't hold your breath.
Ky Wright: This Call of Duty isn't as good as the past ones, but it's still COD, you know. ⁓ I grew up watching my uncle play Call of Duty, play Battlefield, ⁓ all all shooter games. Like that's what he did, right? So for me, I I grew up watching, I was like, man, like and he's probably one of the coolest people in the world to me, you know? ⁓ between him, my dad, and my grandpa, those might be the three coolest guys I've ever seen. but Growing up I I seen that, so it's okay, cool. Like I wasn't always good at it. Now I am. ⁓ but it's because I I just play it all the time. ⁓ but yeah, I I love me some call of duty, man.
Payton Dunn: What what about college football?
Ky Wright: ⁓ I I play college football. ⁓ as like when it first came out, I played it, but part of me was a little salty 'cause I'm like, dude, like I could like we could be on this game, bro. You know? Like it and part of that is just the competitor in you because it's like growing up as a kid and you you know saying you play college football, you're not there yet. So it's like, Okay, like I I get to play with the people that's in front of me, right? Like I look up to these guys, right? And it now it's to the point where ⁓
Payton Dunn: Mm-hmm.
Ky Wright: while as you're actively going through it, you feel like that guy, you know? Like you you're ready to go show the world that ⁓ you can compete with any and everybody and the best of ⁓ you know. And so like at first like that was the the thought process and the mindset. ⁓ but I love it. I I played that a lot more than Madden. I I don't think I've bought Madden in the past probably like two or three years. I yeah.
Payton Dunn: I I haven't touched Madden in a long time. I I get college football every year, you know, but ⁓ so I will say
Ky Wright: Yeah, the Yeah.
Payton Dunn: We kinda we kinda hopped around my notes a little bit here, ⁓ answering some stuff for me. But like, can you like talk about the brotherhood Harding has or what sets Harding different than other programs, right? Like I'm I'm went out the other day and ran into an Indiana guy, right? And he was sitting with some of his teammates on the Titans, right? And I go, Hey man, like, did you go to the White House? you know, 'cause it was a whole thing when, you know, Fernando didn't go to the White House and he said, No, I didn't either, right?
Ky Wright: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
Payton Dunn: And I'm like, well why didn't it you? And then, you know, as we're leaving I tell my girlfriend, I'm like, you know, I would've went to the White House, but that's also why I don't have a national championship. You know, he's like, I don't want to miss my first day of practice. So their mentality's different, they're winners, right? So what does Harding do to make themselves winners?
Ky Wright: ⁓ ev I would say everything. ⁓ like and I know that's broad is really, really broad, but like when you come in day one as a freshman, you learn the standard immediately. Right? Like the simple things as far as like when you show up to a meeting or when you show up to workouts, right? Like we're fifteen minutes early at the minimum to everything, right? But it's a it's a standard of being excellent across the board. ⁓ you go to the classroom, like everybody in that you're sitting in the room with is shooting for a four point ⁓ GPA. You know what I'm saying? Like that's the that's the identity that we have. ⁓ and then what makes it even better is cause like yes we still have competition and we go out and compete and we're trying to kill each other at practice. You know what I'm saying? Like that's what you're going through that every day. But as soon as you back in the locker room, you're all family. Like it it's all brotherhood and and it's real. ⁓ I know like a lot of people are like, ⁓ like maybe that's a you know it's for show or, you know, this, then the third, but hard and Harding is different, man. It is special. ⁓ you can take ⁓ offensive linemen and put them with a D B and they're gonna have an amazing time. You know, like guys that never see each other on the field, right? But it's about the intentionality to build those relationships and build those bonds. ⁓ and it's I don't know, man. It's a it's a different place. It's special. ⁓ it's a it's an anointed place, I would like to say. ⁓ just because like when you come in, Like, okay, yeah, I'm I'm here to play ball, but it changes you. It it changes you in ways that you just like you you had no idea, you really, really couldn't imagine. ⁓ and so to be able to experience it, ⁓ and even like now talking about it, like I can talk about how good it is, but you just don't know until you get to be around it and kind of embrace it. You know what I mean? and that's from community to school and students to the football like Football team, basketball team, softball team, soccer, like everybody gets that experience, right? Football is a little bit different, ⁓ because we are the brotherhood, but like the entire Harding atmosphere, right, is one of just like love, nurture, care, right? Like you can walk through campus and people are willing to ask you about your day. You may not have even met this person yet, but willing to ask you about your day, spend time and just be intentional. with the time it is that they have and spend that with you, right? Like that it's huge. ⁓ but you don't get that everywhere. ⁓ it's just not normal, I would say, in most places. Like Harding is others, right? Like we had this acronym Joy. Jesus others yourself. Right. And I feel like across the campus, that that's that's it. And you know, it it we kind of the the idea of that kind of originated with the football team like it's everywhere, you know. ⁓ of course keep God first always. But after that, right, don't be selfish. You know what I mean? Like be able to reach out and touch someone else, be there for someone else. ⁓ as much as you can, ⁓ because that matters a lot more than your own endeavors and you know, so and then you all yes, you have to take care of yourself, but if you can do it in that tier system and that totem pole, ⁓ you'll create a really, really good environment. But at the end of the day, it's excellence. Like a harding is pure excellence. Like that's the of course nobody is perfect. No human is perfect. No program is perfect. Anything like that. ⁓ but I I say we are pretty close. Like it's a it's a different standard. It it's just really, really different. Freshmen come in and we yes, we have a lot of guys that may transfer. You come in, but the the guys who are there and they stick it out and are they end up graduating from here or you know, like those are the guys that build the culture and are the pillars ⁓ of the community. You know what I mean? and it it's something that you see year in and year out. Right. Like it's it's nothing that'll die off or fade away. it it changed me and I'm really, really good that it did. I love that place, man.
Payton Dunn: Alright, well, I'm gonna switch topics here. We'll go into a little bit of current sports stuff, right? So as far as NIL, do you do you keep up with any of that in the news or is it just kinda like we're just gonna stick to what Harding does and go from there?
Ky Wright: Mm-hmm. I would say that like I keep up with a whole lot in the news. ⁓ just because I don't want to compare my situation to somebody else's situation. ⁓ because once you do, you tend to get ungrateful with the situation that you that you've been blessed with, you know? ⁓ because I remember before the NIL thing happened, like you get to school and you get nothing. You know what I mean? Like you you just show up, yeah, you get your scholarship or whatever, and depending on like how much your scholarship is you may get little bit of money back, but like nothing crazy. But you just look into the goals just to be able to pay for school, you know? ⁓ and so I try to stay more so within than our just to kinda like keep my mind at peace a little bit. ⁓ because once again there goes the competitive nature in you, right? Because you see a guy at a school that's getting paid millions or hundreds of thousands or, you know, whatever. And it's like mentally when you think about playing and skill and production, like you feel like you can go out and probably kill that guy, right? But y'all didn't get the same opportunity, you know, whatever, whatever, whatever happened, whatever happened, right? ⁓ and so it's like if you think in the manner of well for me, if I think in the manner of looking at what everybody else has going on, ⁓ then I tend to be ungrateful within my situation and I feel like God is done a lot for me so I I I try not to do that too much. ⁓ but I I can say that like I I see the NIL stuff in the news and ⁓ like on social media and stuff like that.
Payton Dunn: Yeah. Well my main question there would be, like what what is NIL to you and why do athletes deserve to get it?
Ky Wright: ⁓ whenever I don't think people understand the demand of an athlete, right? ⁓ let's just say you have a kid that goes to a small school, ⁓ but their s their demands are still the same as the big school. I want you to come in, I want you to lift, I want you to work out, I want you to go to class and I want you to be top of your class, right? Like I want you to to go in and be excellent in all of these areas, right? And you have minimal time to yourself, but You're signing up for a job at that point. You know what I'm saying? And so like, yes, some people can get, you know, scholarships and we we spoke on that a little bit. But I think the NIL standpoint, ⁓ it it provides kids with the opportunity to be able to take care of themselves sufficiently, right? And not just barely get over the hurdle. ⁓ I think it's a really good tool and a really good asset. I think that a lot of people are blessed. to be able to walk into spaces where you get that because it is, it is a job, right? Like for instance, this summer I'm interning at ⁓ North Texas with their strength staff. Can you can still hear me?
Payton Dunn: Nope, you cut out there for a second, but can you hear me now? Okay.
Ky Wright: ⁓ is it what yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. All right. But this summer I'm interning at UNT with their strength staff, ⁓ for the football team, right? And i even in that regard alone, it's you gotta be there six A you know, six AM workout, lift, right? And then you got OTAs, right, which is basically like a practice. And then you still have meetings, you still have class summer classes and stuff that you have to attend to because depending on where you at and ⁓ what this fall semester is gonna look like, you really don't wanna be taking a whole lot of classes or have a heavy workload in season. ⁓ so then there's that. ⁓ and then there's conditioning that you have at the end of the day. And so you think about you have you just went and did a twelve hour shift, right? Like you did a twelve hour shift and yes, playing football is fun. And and fo playing football will always be fun or play whatever your sport is football, basketball, baseball, whatever. Right. Like playing your sport is fun, but I don't think that people understand the demands that you have to go through just to be able to play your sport. ⁓ you know, or to be able to train your sport. Like it it's a lot and ⁓ it's definitely physically and mentally taxing, but I think that the the NIL side of things can help ease that a little bit because that alleviates a stressor. ⁓ people are stressed regardless. Like life is already hard. ⁓ but then you add all of these other things on top of it. ⁓ and yes, I think it builds r resiliency, but I think that this it was a big blessing to be able to give the kids to like, hey, you are getting compensated for your work. You like you're not just working in vain, you know?
Payton Dunn: Yeah, I I gotcha. So we're gonna go to the games part of the segment, right? We're we're gonna start off with hot takes, then I have a custom game just for you. ⁓ the first one is if you're an NBA guy, what you said you played two K, what who you got? Spurs, Knicks.
Ky Wright: I'll spurs all the way. Hey, Wimby, not even about like 'cause I I look at players and like, you know, you can look at the numbers and all of that. But Wimby has this mindset that almost reminds me of like Kobe. You know? Kobe is my by all time great favorite player. I feel like he's the greatest to ever do it, regardless of what I don't care what any numbers look like. Like I Kobe is my guy. But it's about the tenacity. the the work ethic, the the mindset more than anything that's put towards the game. and I I'm not I mean like you look at S D A and yeah, he's a good player, you know. Okay, C was a good team, but it's just a different level of like dog mentality when you look at the Spurs. And that's even like when you look at the Knicks, I I just yeah, they're they're a good team. They can play good basketball. ⁓ but it's something about that Just nitty gritty, like I'm gonna put my head down and just work regardless. ⁓ that comes from the Spurs that I really, really like. Wimby is my guy though. I and and I'm not a I'm I'm not a huge fan of people all the time, but yeah, Wimby got it.
Payton Dunn: Yeah, I I think the Knicks might have it. you know, Kat can is a little bit better than, you know, Chet or Hallenstein or however you pronounce his name and you know, so Mitchell Robinson's good tonight. ⁓
Ky Wright: Yeah.
Payton Dunn: I think it's gonna be a good series. It's just the Spurs, you know, went to seven. They're probably tired, you know. Knicks kinda had a break, so we'll see. You know, I think Knicks take game one regardless. And then we'll see. But if Wimby comes out and puts forty and twenty up, like he did in the NBA Cup, it it's gonna be tough. So your second high take is how many teams deserve to be in the college football playoff?
Ky Wright: Honestly I don't I don't see a reason to to change it much, but the reason that I say that is because you have teams that you may have you may play have a really good season. It's a difference though. Like and no matter if we want to address the elephant in the room or not, there's a difference, right? And like yes I I just want to say that I'm not gonna like dog on any com different conferences or anything like that, but there is a difference in the level of play, right? and that's regardless. Like you have to address that, right? So yes, you can give teams the opportunity or the chance per se, but like every team every time a a different team has entered, ⁓ outside of the the main conferences that we look at, it don't go anywhere. Like your first round and then you're back at home. So it's like, okay, yeah, you got the experience, but really what was the point? You know? ⁓ and so and which yes they it I think it gives other ⁓ I think it gives other schools more opportunity per se. ⁓ but You gotta be really killing in some of these conversations you gotta really be killing ⁓ to get that shot to go play for a a national title. ⁓ and so I probably wouldn't I probably wouldn't change much. ⁓ I probably keep it exactly how it is.
Payton Dunn: Well, you've been on the side of a really big bracket compared to twelve teams and like I can only imagine, you know, you'd like ⁓ I think the championship year, you know, you all were at home two weeks. Well you had a bye, I think. And then you go to I think you went up to Mi Michigan to play a game and then you were in Dallas, right?
Ky Wright: Mm-hmm. Well, the twenty three year we were twenty three year we had a bye week and then we had all home games. Yeah, we
Payton Dunn: Okay, yeah. Yeah, yeah, Missouri Missouri State or not Missouri State, but Yeah.
Ky Wright: We had Central Missouri and then after in which they were a really, really good team. ⁓ and then after U C ⁓ we had Grand Valley, which was a really good team. ⁓ and then we had Lenore Ron. But like you see when you play the like your those first two, really good teams. We won we won by one point, right? But then and not to say that Lenore Ron is not a good team. They are a good team. But compared to the first two, it's like ⁓ right? So i and even once you You can think about it like that in a D two level, but it's the same thing when you get to that division one round two. Like and people can say it, not say it, however they want to feel about it, but that's really what it is. ⁓ because that's like twenty this past year, right? We had two home games in no, I think we had we had three home games. We went we had Northwestern, we had Pitt, and we had U T P B. ⁓ Permian Basin and then after that we w went to Pennsylvania to play Cutstown, right? And they had ⁓ great record, all of this, but who you haven't you haven't played anybody. You know what I'm saying? And so like it showed once we got to Cutstown. You know? And so, you know, you win, you come back, whatever. But the difference in the the strength of the conferences and the level of play within your region, ⁓ I I think that all of that matters a lot. ⁓ just because if if we're being honest, some teams just can't play with others. It's not to say that you're not a good team, but it's just levels. It's levels in everything with life.
Payton Dunn: Yeah. What it's like you're playing half a like a quarter of a season just for the playoff. You know, it's like like I can't imagine college football going anymore for the big level because it's like you already have twelve games, you play a conference tournament, that's thirteen, now you want to play four or five in a playoff. It's an NFL season right there, you know? It's like by the time you recover and you're done, you're already hopping into spring ball. Whereas teams that didn't make the playoff, they had all that time off to recover. And it's like you're not gonna be fresh next year, it's gonna be hard to go back to back.
Ky Wright: Yeah. Literally.
Payton Dunn: I'll give you the last hot take here. This one this one's a true hot take, all right? Last year, right? Arkansas goes two and ten. Harding's in the national championship. Had they met on the gridiron, who wins that game?
Ky Wright: You know what's crazy? I was at the University of Arkansas interning last summer. Right. So Arkansas did go two and seven, but they didn't get blown out two and seven. Like the the losses that they had were more so discipline than just lack of talent ⁓ or lack of effort. it was discipline. Like Notre Dame, they came down, they okay, understandable. But the rest of their losses were really close games. ⁓ they had a few turnovers here or a a stop that they didn't get here, or you know, things like that. ⁓ and as much as I love my school and how great I think we are, ⁓ it's different, man. It's different. It is different. Like, for example, you start off of course everybody knows it starts in the trenches, right? D line, O line. Their offensive linemen are six eight plus. Like like I d we don't have anybody six eight on our team. You know what I mean? And so like that and that's not not even talking about everything else, like all the other aspects, right? ⁓ that's just one. But it's different. And so as yes, as proud I am as I am to be a Harding Bison, yeah, I there that's nah. It is definitely ⁓ U of A on that one. ⁓ and do I ha do I think and believe that we have some guys that could play on a team like that? Yeah, a thousand percent. ⁓ but you think about like one or two guys versus eleven guys, ⁓ or you know, y it's twenty two. play you have twenty two players that's gonna play right, level office, level on defense. ⁓ it it's just that we it's not that we don't or may not have those guys, they just have more of them. You know, like you have the money to be able to go and pay for all twenty two, you know? So
Payton Dunn: And then y'all had the guy come from Fayetteville down to Harding. So, you know. Yeah, he can probably tell you all about it. So now, the fun game. All right. So ⁓ just for you, anime guy, we'll see how much of an anime guy you are, alright? So I'm gonna start with two characters, and then you're gonna you're gonna pick who would win in a fight. And then we'll keep going down. So the first two characters are gonna be Gone and Naruto.
Ky Wright: Yeah. You got it? I gotta go Naruto. If I don't go Naruto, my little brother kill me. ⁓ I gotta go Naruto.
Payton Dunn: God, you're gonna have Naruto all the way down this list. Alright, Naruto or Aaron Yeager? Like in like final episode, Aaron Jaeger.
Ky Wright: I'm a good. I'm gonna go Naruto again.
Payton Dunn: Alright. So now we have Naruto or Gojo.
Ky Wright: Man. How long is this list?
Payton Dunn: Bye. It gets it gets harder as we go.
Ky Wright: Okay. All right. I I'm I'm gonna stick with Naruto. I'm gonna stick with Naruto.
Payton Dunn: Okay. Naruto or Almight?
Ky Wright: Does get harder. We're about four though. This is four. Four. Yeah, okay. I'll go Naruto again. He got 650.
Payton Dunn: This is the fourth one, yeah. All right. Naruto or Mark Grayson?
Ky Wright: I'm gonna go mark this down.
Payton Dunn: Yeah, but say I I was like if you pick if you pick ⁓ it's like you ain't read the comics if you do that. Now Invincible or Goku?
Ky Wright: Yeah. Okay.
Payton Dunn: Okay. Goku or Sungjinwoo.
Ky Wright: Yeah, well, good.
Payton Dunn: Dang, solo like I mean he's he's pretty powerful. No, I had to I had to look up the pronunciation for this one because I haven't really watched it but I always see him in the debates. Goku or ⁓ the one punch man Sant Santama or whatever his name is.
Ky Wright: Yeah. ⁓ He different. He different. But Goku is just like he doesn't get weaker. Like it's stronger. Okay, you beat me. Stronger. Okay, you beat me. Str like it's it he just keeps leveling up, right? So I'm a I'm gonna go Goku. Let's take Goku.
Payton Dunn: Okay. Alright, Goku or Luffy?
Ky Wright: I like this one. I like this one. Mm. I l I love Goku, but I'm gonna go Luffy. Just 'cause I'm watching one piece right now.
Payton Dunn: Yeah, I would have if you would have kept going Goku, I gonna throw Superman in there. He's not on the list, but I just wanted to see 'cause I I've seen those debates. That's it. You know, I just wanted to test the anime knowledge right there and let people argue with you if they get on and like their nerds too, so
Ky Wright: Yeah. Yeah, man, if I think the one that I'm taking above everybody though, and people may like, ⁓ that's crazy. Have you ever seen Seven Deadly Sins?
Payton Dunn: I have not but I've heard
Ky Wright: Maliotis and Escanor, probably two of the strongest in all of anime. Easy. Like the only problem with Escanor is he's at his peak at high noon, right? Instead of it being like all day or like whenever, it's only at high noon. But Maliotis, yeah, he can do it anytime, anywhere, any day. Full counter, he got it.
Payton Dunn: Right, well we'll go to our quick hits and get you out of here. So now, you know, I I've seen ya in the action, right, trying to get some roles out of Texas Roadhouse, but how would you describe your dating life in football terms?
Ky Wright: So Mm. All right. My dating life in football terms. I'm go. It's the relationship that your Q and B back have when running a wing T, right? So basically that's it like always together. Your your cu your quarterback and your B back are every play, right? They they are meshing every single play. ⁓ but I say that because me and my girlfriend with each other every day. So yeah. See
Payton Dunn: She's actually in the background right now.
Ky Wright: Before we got on here, she did just leave for work, yeah.
Payton Dunn: All right, all right. The next one is, you know, speaking of anime, what's your favorite one?
Ky Wright: Seven Deadly Sins. Yeah. I'm watching JJ K in One Piece right now, but Seven Deadly Sins is top for sure.
Payton Dunn: I gotta finish JJK season three. now, being a nerd, right? I know you own some stuff. What is the most valuable nerd item you own?
Ky Wright: ⁓ I actually don't own anything crazy from the from the anime world, but I would probably say like and this one probably wouldn't even be like nerdy. It was probably more so like hype beast because I I love streetwear like Supreme, ⁓ Bape, like all that kind of I love that kind of stuff, right? ⁓ right now it's probably I have a pair of Supreme Jordan fives, like the collab that they did. and then I also have a ⁓ Supreme ⁓ hoodie. The the Jordans are definitely more than the hoodie, but the hoodie itself is like original box logo. ⁓ so it's yeah, it's up there.
Payton Dunn: Yeah, well I'll have to admit that I own an invincible number one graded, so that was a little deployment treat to myself when I read all the continuums. ⁓ we don't wanna don't look up how much that is. ⁓ so we'll go to the next we got three more before we get you out of here. ⁓ the game you look forward to the most this year, and I'll add a little bit more because I went to Hardy and Ryan I think it's gonna be Washington. It should be Washingtail, right? ⁓ when I started, you know, in the NIL space, I called Washitaw against my own will. Got the athletic director on the phone and he hung up on me saying he didn't need no more NIL. So I I hope it's Washingtail.
Ky Wright: Yeah. ⁓ in regular season, yeah, it's definitely Washita. ⁓ but Ferris, man, like it that's that that's a that's a hump that or a wall that we just have to punch through. We have to. ⁓ especially like this past game. ⁓ so close. Like yes, even like you look at my okay ⁓ it wasn't a close game. But two stops, three stops, like in a four quarter game, all you need is two or three stops and you win the game. That's it. Two or three stops and you win the game. And we just couldn't figure it out. ⁓ We couldn't do it this time, but yeah, that one's definitely circled. Like because you think about it, we're at the point now where the thought process isn't a a gag championship. Like, yes, of course we want to win a gag championship, right? Like of course. But like we the way that we work, it's expected to win a gag championship, you know? Like the the way that we're working is national championship, national championship, national championship, right? ⁓ so it's like elevating that more and way to get the national championship is to beat Ferry State, man. So ⁓ yeah, that's the that's the that that's the big circle for everybody right now.
Payton Dunn: All right. Now, as an Arkansan right, what is an Arkansas stereotype that is true?
Ky Wright: People love like talking about like how country Arkansas people are and yeah, we are. Like even if you live in Little Rock, like you get down with the country. ⁓ or even in Fairville, like because the country isn't anything but like ten minutes down the street, you know? ⁓ so yes, we're all country. We're all we all sound like we're from the south. Like yes, it's that. But I think that like when people come 'cause like I got a few friends from Dallas and all of that and they'll come to searching like bro there's nothing here. Like you don't go to Arkansas looking for the city. You go to Arkansas to admire the what nature has to offer for you. You know what I'm saying? Like the trees and the the lakes and the c and all of it. That's what you come to Arkansas for, right? ⁓ I'm not gonna go to the heart of Dallas and be like, Bro, there's no trees. Duh. You know? And so ⁓ yeah, we're we're country. We like to do country things. ⁓ you know, like that's us. So Definitely say that we
Payton Dunn: Well, to get you out of here, tell the fans where they can find you in Keep up with you for this next season.
Ky Wright: This next season, of course, look all Harding pages, but Instagram, ⁓ KYSO one X on Instagram. ⁓ do I have a Twitter? Yeah, Kai underscore right five on Twitter. and I think that's about it, man. I think that's about it.
Payton Dunn: All right. Well, thanks for coming on. I hope you have a great rest of your day and enjoy the video games with your little brother tonight. All right, I'll see ya.
Ky Wright: Yes, sir. Appreciate you, boss, man. See ya.
