00:00:00.017 --> 00:00:04.972
Hello, Dr. Brant Hulsebus here, and welcome to another edition of Ask the Chiropractor.
00:00:05.357 --> 00:00:12.230
Ask the Chiropractor is my little podcast that I do when someone has a question about chiropractic or chiropractic care, I try to answer.
00:00:12.544 --> 00:00:14.615
I'm a chiropractor here in Rockford, Illinois.
00:00:14.882 --> 00:00:21.190
I'm a proud graduate of Palmer College of Chiropractic, and I'm happy to be the team chiropractor of the Rockford IceHogs.
00:00:21.763 --> 00:00:23.792
Let's dive into it.
00:00:34.701 --> 00:00:35.862
Hi, thanks for tuning in.
00:00:36.631 --> 00:00:41.237
We're continuing to debunk rumors and falsehoods about what I do as a chiropractor.
00:00:41.359 --> 00:00:56.978
A lot of people have things they say about us that just aren't true, and I want to educate you as a chiropractor who, you know, ironically might be an expert in chiropractic, you know, more than, say, a, a dentist or an optometrist, a little bit more about what we do in our, in our education.
00:00:57.981 --> 00:01:01.726
The first episode we talked about once you go, you have to go forever, and I addressed that.
00:01:01.726 --> 00:01:03.488
It's just about making healthy choices.
00:01:04.115 --> 00:01:07.691
One, asking somebody who's not a chiropractor advice on chiropractic care.
00:01:07.780 --> 00:01:16.868
And it's … I don't understand why people who aren't chiropractors are considered to be experts on what we do over actually us, who actually are experts on what we do.
00:01:17.403 --> 00:01:19.688
And the last one, I want to talk a little bit about our education.
00:01:19.775 --> 00:01:22.475
A lot of people say that we don't have real degrees, we're not real doctors.
00:01:22.813 --> 00:01:25.111
And again, I broke that all down really clear.
00:01:25.795 --> 00:01:32.368
Well, today I want to talk about the biggest myth, where it came from, why they say it, and the lack of evidence to prove it.
00:01:33.224 --> 00:01:33.703
Okay?
00:01:34.063 --> 00:01:35.165
Let's talk about this.
00:01:35.522 --> 00:02:11.651
I just saw a dumb-dumb, um, excuse me, I just saw an orthopedic doctor online doing a video saying, "I would never let a chiropractor do a high velocity thrust into my cervical spine because I've seen so many people that have been paralyzed by chiropractors," or,"I've seen so many people who have had strokes after seeing a chiropractor, that chiropractic adjustments, if you get your neck adjusted, it causes a stroke." Um, do you think the federal government would give us licenses if what we did paralyzed people and caused strokes?
00:02:12.025 --> 00:02:16.919
Do you think the state boards would allow us to practice if what we did did that?
00:02:17.736 --> 00:02:32.067
Do you think the insurance companies, the malpractice insurance would cover us if, if every time I gave someone a neck adjustment, like five or six times a day, I'm paralyzing people, or five or six times a day I'm causing massive strokes?
00:02:32.438 --> 00:02:37.256
Do you think I would be allowed to continue to do what I do if that was a real thing?
00:02:37.987 --> 00:02:41.092
I mean, it sounds really dramatic, and, like, it gets emotions going.
00:02:41.473 --> 00:02:53.123
But just use your logical brain for a minute and ask yourself, would there be so many chiropractors around the country if every- if they were causing this many problems as the way they make it sound?
00:02:54.221 --> 00:03:02.705
It's, it's kinda crazy to think about that, that, that there would be a profession out there that could be that dangerous and still allowed to be- exist.
00:03:03.252 --> 00:03:04.939
I mean, like, the government wouldn't have shut us down.
00:03:05.221 --> 00:03:08.070
Like, the Department of Health and, uh, wouldn't come after us.
00:03:08.100 --> 00:03:12.347
Like, your state would continue to give us licenses as long as we continue to paralyze people.
00:03:13.337 --> 00:03:15.062
So just stop and think about that for a minute.
00:03:15.133 --> 00:03:21.269
That's, that's the first direction I always go with this when somebody comes at me, "I heard you guys cause strokes." I'm like, "Yes, we kill people regularly.
00:03:21.269 --> 00:03:29.159
That's why we stay so busy." Not only that, did you know chiropractors… I know at one time we had the lowest malpractice rates.
00:03:29.332 --> 00:03:31.581
I don't know if it's still true, but I know we still have one of the lowest.
00:03:31.581 --> 00:03:35.301
We had the lowest, the lowest, but I don't know if we're still the lowest.
00:03:35.778 --> 00:03:54.366
But we figured out the other day that my new doctor that was here working, she paid less for a full year of malpractice coverage, for a full year, covered her 365 days, she paid less than my orthopedic friend paid for one day of coverage.
00:03:55.649 --> 00:04:01.036
So what he pays in one day to cover him would cover her for the whole year and have leftover.
00:04:02.048 --> 00:04:02.799
That's nuts.
00:04:03.229 --> 00:04:07.670
And so for people to say we're dangerous, wouldn't our malpractice just be astronomical?
00:04:08.228 --> 00:04:11.651
I mean, could you imagine how much I would have to pay if I was paralyzing people every day?
00:04:12.171 --> 00:04:13.677
The, the malpractice would be outrageous.
00:04:13.679 --> 00:04:14.478
I would have to quit.
00:04:15.326 --> 00:04:19.644
But our malpractice rates as providers are some of the lowest of any healthcare provider out there.
00:04:21.249 --> 00:04:24.884
So let's talk about, a little bit about where this stuff came from and why people say it.
00:04:25.644 --> 00:04:35.795
Well, the first thing is- There was a article that came out, oh, about 2010 from the American Heart and American Stroke Association.
00:04:36.458 --> 00:04:38.867
It came out to put down my profession.
00:04:40.199 --> 00:04:44.995
It came out and it said that chiropract- we found a connection between chiropractors and having strokes.
00:04:46.197 --> 00:04:47.541
See, let me break it down for you.
00:04:48.249 --> 00:05:01.009
When you have severe neck, when you have, when you're having a stroke in your neck, let's say the vertebral artery in your neck is hemorrhaged, the number one symptom of that is incredible neck pain, God-awful neck pain.
00:05:02.014 --> 00:05:05.805
And when people have really, really bad neck pain, where's the place they go?
00:05:06.735 --> 00:05:07.379
The chiropractor.
00:05:07.966 --> 00:05:10.894
I mean, that's one thing we're known for, neck pain, back pain, headaches, right?
00:05:10.911 --> 00:05:13.108
The most common reason why people come see us.
00:05:13.521 --> 00:05:24.350
So if I'm having horrific neck pain, I might go to a chiropractor And so they said that there was a correlation, like 28% of the people who had this stroke had been to a chiropractor.
00:05:24.709 --> 00:05:28.127
Therefore, there must be a link between the chiropractor and that.
00:05:29.690 --> 00:05:36.447
Well, there's a guy named Cassidy, and Cassidy said, "Wait a minute, this sounds kinda crazy." So he looked into it.
00:05:37.495 --> 00:05:40.920
He dove into it, and he's- he went to look at this article that they published.
00:05:41.728 --> 00:05:45.370
Well, did you know that over 60% of them went to the primary doctor that day also?
00:05:46.202 --> 00:05:50.389
So 20-something went to a chiropractor, but 60% went to the primary, had the stroke later.
00:05:51.350 --> 00:06:00.653
So if the chiropractors are the cause because they had visited them, but they also, 60% visited the primary, wouldn't that make the primary doctor significantly more dangerous than us?
00:06:02.144 --> 00:06:03.930
And, like, 100% of them wore socks.
00:06:04.221 --> 00:06:05.404
A lot of them had did other things.
00:06:05.711 --> 00:06:09.392
So to say that they had gone to the chiropractor, the chiropractor caused it, it's kinda crazy.
00:06:09.908 --> 00:06:11.365
Just like I said, they all had socks on.
00:06:11.365 --> 00:06:12.579
Did the socks cause a stroke?
00:06:13.586 --> 00:06:13.942
No.
00:06:15.194 --> 00:06:22.238
So what happens is, if you wanna go back in time, the American Medical Association created a division on quackery.
00:06:23.492 --> 00:06:26.997
Their sole intent was to contain and eliminate chiropractic care.
00:06:27.882 --> 00:06:29.548
If you don't believe me, you can look it up.
00:06:30.398 --> 00:06:37.014
I mean, there's been articles and papers published on this, and there was a chiropractor here in my home state of Illinois named Chester Wilk.
00:06:37.363 --> 00:06:46.745
And Chester Wilk said, "Wait a minute, what are they doing?" He found out about this, so he sued them, and he went after them for an antitrust for trying to contain and eliminate chiropractic.
00:06:47.367 --> 00:06:49.634
And Chester Wilk won this case in the early '90s.
00:06:50.322 --> 00:06:55.901
But remember, chiropractic started 1895, and Chester Wilk won in the early 1990s.
00:06:56.391 --> 00:07:04.093
So it was almost 100 years of lies and misconceptions said about chiropractic by the American Medical Association.
00:07:04.733 --> 00:07:26.298
Now, the Journal of the American Medical Association, called JAMA, had to publish an article admitting what they had done, that the federal judge said, "You guys need to publish and, and put on the record that you guys were lying about chiropractic care." But over 100 years of lying about what we do and who we are has created lies and things that people honestly think are true.
00:07:26.613 --> 00:07:36.372
Because 100 years of a lie, it's hard to say it's not a lie anymore So you can Google search Chester Wilk versus the AMA if you think I'm talking crazy, and look it all up and read it yourself.
00:07:36.404 --> 00:07:40.319
There's books out there called Contain and Eliminate that break all this process down.
00:07:40.343 --> 00:07:42.406
It's absolutely insane how they're trying to ruin us.
00:07:43.398 --> 00:07:46.865
So now we have a revisiting of that back in 2010.
00:07:46.944 --> 00:07:49.935
And so Cassidy dove in deeper because he knows about Chester Wilk.
00:07:49.935 --> 00:07:51.302
He wanted to see more of what's going on.
00:07:51.839 --> 00:07:54.326
And Ch- Cassidy figured out there was no causation.
00:07:54.326 --> 00:07:59.211
It's just people went to the chiropractor because they were having neck pain, which is actually a stroke.
00:07:59.557 --> 00:08:09.875
Now, what Cassidy actually found out in deeper diving, you see, when you go to the chiropractor and you're having this neck pain, and the chiropractor says, "Wait a minute, something's not right here," because we're taught when to adjust and not to adjust.
00:08:10.206 --> 00:08:13.363
And the chiropractor calls 911 and says, "Hey, I got a patient here.
00:08:13.365 --> 00:08:14.552
I believe he's having a stroke.
00:08:14.791 --> 00:08:26.923
I need you to come get him." The ambulance comes, they get him to go back, and then on the report, it's always written the chiropractor caused the stroke And because I've had it happen to me, I've had it happen where a patient came in, I didn't want to take care of them.
00:08:26.925 --> 00:08:27.778
I called 911.
00:08:27.781 --> 00:08:28.394
The patient left.
00:08:28.411 --> 00:08:32.787
All I did was interview the patient, and they tried to snow, say I did something to the patient to cause this.
00:08:33.167 --> 00:08:38.216
And I'm like, "All I did was interview them. What's different than you interviewing them?" And I had to defend myself in front of a panel.
00:08:38.923 --> 00:08:41.761
So this biasism against our profession is rapid.
00:08:42.750 --> 00:08:49.639
So if you go to the medical doctor and they discover this, and they turn your head, and you start having a stroke because they're doing a range of motion tests, they discovered it.
00:08:49.951 --> 00:08:56.559
If a chiropractor looks at you, the chiropractor often gets blamed for it because of all the years of biasism and prejudism against my profession.
00:08:57.211 --> 00:08:58.447
That's what Cassidy found out.
00:08:59.167 --> 00:09:15.225
Cassidy actually found out you're safer going to the chiropractor than you are the primary doctor because we are so scared of being blamed for something we didn't do that we're twice as likely to refer you to where you need to go out of fear of persecution for wrongful judgment against us.
00:09:15.474 --> 00:09:17.192
So you're actually safer with the chiropractor.
00:09:17.669 --> 00:09:26.548
Matter of fact, Cassidy's research showed that it's roughly one in 5 million, 5 million visits could actually cause an injury to the chiropractor.
00:09:27.552 --> 00:09:31.014
So it takes 5 million visits before somebody actually gets hurt at a chiropractor.
00:09:31.624 --> 00:09:34.782
Go hang out somewhere else and see if they have the same rates.
00:09:35.149 --> 00:09:36.916
Look at the number of medical malpractice rates.
00:09:36.924 --> 00:09:38.381
See if it's one in every 5 million.
00:09:38.855 --> 00:09:39.929
See if it's the same thing.
00:09:40.479 --> 00:09:42.756
I guarantee you, you're going to find out it's not.
00:09:44.163 --> 00:09:45.701
So this is how this all started.
00:09:45.820 --> 00:09:46.823
This is where it came from.
00:09:46.823 --> 00:09:47.857
This is the truth behind it.
00:09:48.500 --> 00:09:49.561
Chiropractic is safe.
00:09:49.898 --> 00:09:51.318
Chiropractic is very, very safe.
00:09:51.615 --> 00:09:55.308
Matter of fact, it's actually kind of scary to look at the medical procedure what people do with neck pain.
00:09:55.750 --> 00:09:59.240
The whole protocol is crazy if you read the science and the literature.
00:10:00.037 --> 00:10:07.058
I mean, the number one thing they do when you have neck pain and headaches and stuff like that is they give you non-steroidal inflammatory drugs, NSAIDs.
00:10:07.436 --> 00:10:13.067
And we know since the 1990s that NSAIDs, chronic use of NSAIDs actually creates headaches and lower back pain.
00:10:13.919 --> 00:10:16.647
So the medication they're giving you to treat it, we actually know causes it.
00:10:17.429 --> 00:10:24.337
And then if you're so bad, maybe they'll give you a cortisone shot, and we know that those shots were never designed to use at the spine.
00:10:24.339 --> 00:10:39.975
The FDA has never approved them for spinal use, and the manufacturer said,"Don't use them around the spine." So they try that, and then maybe we go see a physical therapist that hasn't kept up with the research about stabilization muscles, and they're doing physical therapy the old-fashioned way, which we know doesn't work.
00:10:40.458 --> 00:10:46.513
Then they look at you and say, "Well, we tried everything. Maybe you should have surgery." But they're calling us dangerous or calling us unscientific.
00:10:47.678 --> 00:10:52.779
I would implore you that if you really have these concerns to sit down and talk to a chiropractor or call my malpractice company.
00:10:53.339 --> 00:10:54.663
Go ahead, ChiroSecure.
00:10:55.054 --> 00:10:55.783
Give them a call.
00:10:56.118 --> 00:10:57.409
Ask them how dangerous we are.
00:10:57.799 --> 00:10:59.471
Ask them how much a chiropractor pays.
00:11:00.274 --> 00:11:01.773
Call the insurance companies themselves.
00:11:01.812 --> 00:11:02.133
Ask them.
00:11:02.135 --> 00:11:07.600
They'll be happy to educate you on how safe we are Again, it's just common sense that we're not doing that.
00:11:07.600 --> 00:11:08.807
It's just fear-mongering.
00:11:09.379 --> 00:11:10.688
Uh, it's, and it's just ridiculous.
00:11:10.721 --> 00:11:12.986
This, it's so sad it's still happening today.
00:11:13.197 --> 00:11:14.472
So, so sad.
00:11:15.471 --> 00:11:26.083
And matter of fact, a lot of the cases that when this happened that they blamed chiropractic, if you look at the literature, none of these so-called chiropractic adjustments were actually performed by a chiropractor.
00:11:26.565 --> 00:11:33.432
They were done by DOs, physical therapists, and medical doctors trying to mimic what we do without our training, and then they blamed us.
00:11:34.071 --> 00:11:39.568
Kinda like if I had my neighbor's kid do open heart surgery on me, and I don't survive, I don't blame open heart surgeons.
00:11:39.754 --> 00:11:41.547
I blame the kid for not having the education.
00:11:42.378 --> 00:11:45.937
So when people try to mimic what we do and hurt people, they still blame us.
00:11:46.634 --> 00:11:49.575
So there's a lot of biasism in the medical world against us.
00:11:49.619 --> 00:11:51.943
It's sad, it's out of date, and it's pathetic.
00:11:52.702 --> 00:11:54.534
That's why you have to go right to a chiropractor.
00:11:55.419 --> 00:11:58.102
I hope this answered that question, put some, put some of this to rest.
00:11:58.379 --> 00:12:09.547
I, I tried to quote my s- my sources here, and a matter of fact, another research paper just got published this week about how chiropractic adjustments do not cause strokes or cause paralysis.
00:12:09.962 --> 00:12:10.519
Check it out.
00:12:10.562 --> 00:12:11.392
Read their science.
00:12:11.721 --> 00:12:12.750
Don't read pamphlets.
00:12:12.759 --> 00:12:13.980
Read the actual literature.
00:12:14.386 --> 00:12:15.676
Thanks for tuning in.
