ABOUT THIS EPISODE
“Remembering Crickette” is a powerful, heart-wrenching true-crime documentary that follows the life, disappearance, investigation, and long fight for justice surrounding 13-year-old Crystal Leigh “Crickette” Surrell of Ladson, South Carolina.
Set against the backdrop of a quiet Lowcountry community, this film retraces Crickette’s final morning — an ordinary walk to school that became the beginning of a nightmare. As the community searches, hope collapses when her body is discovered in a wooded area near her route.
For years, the case sits in painful silence. But time, new forensic tools, and a determined cold-case task force breathe life into the investigation once again. Old statements unravel. Hidden truths rise. Two men, once teenagers, fall under renewed scrutiny. The case finally returns to the courtroom, delivering a verdict that brings both justice and heartbreak.
The story doesn’t end there. Nearly twenty years later, Crickette’s family must relive everything inside a 2024 parole hearing — sitting only feet away from the man who took her life. The board’s decision becomes the final chapter in a decades-long fight to protect her memory.
This documentary is not just the story of a crime. It is the story of a community shaken, a family forever changed, and a young girl whose life still echoes through the Lowcountry. “Remembering Crickette” honors her, restores her voice, and ensures the world will never forget her name.
