ABOUT THIS EPISODE
Procrastination can feel like a character flaw, but I see it as a predictable brain pattern, a bad mental habit and that means we can train our way out of it.
If you’ve ever stared at a workout plan, a report, a nutrition goal, or a hard conversation and thought, “I’ll do it later,” this one is built for you.
I’m Angela Shurina, and I’m sharing the 3-step mental strategy I use with my coaching clients and in my own life to take action when the “I don’t want to” or "I'll do it later" mood hits.
First, we talk about why resistance shows up in the first place and why the struggle is usually concentrated in the very first step.
I walk through a simple reflection practice that cuts through excuses fast and turn motivation, productivity, and discipline into a repeatable habit.
If you got value from this, subscribe so you don’t miss what’s next, share it with a friend who’s been stuck lately, and leave a quick rating and review so more people can find the show.

00:00:09.119 --> 00:00:14.480
Hey guys, and welcome back to another episode of Change Wired Podcast.
00:00:14.640 --> 00:00:16.480
My name is Angela Shorina.
00:00:16.559 --> 00:00:17.199
I'm your host.
00:00:17.280 --> 00:00:29.760
I'm your partner in change, personal, and collective transformation, your master health, sleep, stress management, recovery, nutrition, fitness, body transformation, and self-actualization coach.
00:00:29.920 --> 00:00:54.960
And just someone with a lot of passion and obsession for unlocking more of your potential, of our potential, of growing 1% or a little bit better every single day to live more and more extraordinary lives and to create more positive impact in the world.
00:00:55.200 --> 00:00:58.719
And today, guys, we're talking about quite an important subject.
00:00:58.880 --> 00:00:59.759
Today is Monday.
00:00:59.920 --> 00:01:03.600
I think it's like the perfect post for Monday morning.
00:01:03.679 --> 00:01:27.439
If you're listening to this on Monday, it's gonna fire up the whole week if you decide to practice this three-step mental strategy that I teach to my clients that I use myself that helps you to get to take action every time you feel like procrastinating.
00:01:27.680 --> 00:01:48.239
And this is what I learned in 18 years of my coaching practice and in my personal life, and also while reading books and listening to researchers of motivation on people, researchers and experts with some global names on productivity.
00:01:48.480 --> 00:02:01.519
I've kind of accumulated all of these different bits and pieces and put it together into this three-step recipes that I now use with myself already automatically because it became this mental habit of mine.
00:02:01.760 --> 00:02:03.840
And I also teach it to every client.
00:02:04.000 --> 00:02:12.879
And when they practice it, they also learn how to not procrastinate on the important things that you wanna get moving.
00:02:14.000 --> 00:02:24.080
There is a side of procrastination that helps you that is useful, that helps you to reconsider should you do the thing in the first place.
00:02:24.719 --> 00:02:44.400
But I also found that more often than not, it's just an undesirable brain or mental habit that stops you very often from taking actions that help you to grow your best to help you to grow the next level of you.
00:02:44.560 --> 00:02:48.879
Because resistance, guys, it's just like in the gym.
00:02:49.199 --> 00:02:53.039
If you want your next level physique, you gotta lift heavier.
00:02:53.199 --> 00:02:57.360
You can't be doing the same thing and expect to get different results, right?
00:02:57.439 --> 00:02:59.840
It's a law of insanity, as Einstein.
00:03:00.159 --> 00:03:02.800
Einstein posted it at some point.
00:03:02.879 --> 00:03:09.919
Uh, maybe it wasn't Einstein, but it's very true that you can't be doing the same thing, expecting different results.
00:03:10.159 --> 00:03:23.280
And it is the truth, fundamental truth of life, that if you want to grow to the next level, whether that's physically or in your relationships or in your business, you gotta do hard stuff.
00:03:23.439 --> 00:03:36.000
And your brain is designed that way that it wants to save energy to keep you in a safe space more often than not, because safe, the same level is familiar, that's where you get to survive.
00:03:36.240 --> 00:03:47.759
But is survival what you're after, or do you want to thrive and grow and create the version of you that you haven't lived yet, the version of your life that you haven't lived yet?
00:03:47.919 --> 00:03:56.639
And there's gonna be a lot, a lot of procrastination, or that feeling that uh maybe I'll do it tomorrow, or maybe later, or some other time.
00:03:56.960 --> 00:04:09.280
And so today's podcast is all about that how to get through that and get the ball rolling, the challenging ball rolling to unlock the next version of you, of your business, of your life.
00:04:09.520 --> 00:04:13.039
And it all started in sauna.
00:04:13.919 --> 00:04:22.079
So I usually go to the gym every morning before my day starts because usually that's the beginning of my best days.
00:04:22.240 --> 00:04:29.600
And these days I do a short cold plunge, two, three minutes, and then a short sauna session, 10-15 minutes.
00:04:29.680 --> 00:04:33.839
And I usually have quite profound conversations uh before 6 a.m.
00:04:34.160 --> 00:04:35.519
or 7 a.m.
00:04:35.759 --> 00:04:36.959
in that sauna.
00:04:37.120 --> 00:04:42.639
It just opens people up, you know, that warmth, that heat and sweat.
00:04:42.959 --> 00:04:45.120
So the conversation went something like this.
00:04:45.279 --> 00:04:47.040
A friend asked me a question.
00:04:47.519 --> 00:04:52.000
Like, how do you get yourself to do things when you don't want to do anything?
00:04:52.240 --> 00:04:59.839
Like, I know that once I when I start doing something small, like washing the dishes, I just keep going.
00:05:00.560 --> 00:05:01.680
But what do you do?
00:05:01.839 --> 00:05:03.839
What do you do as a coach?
00:05:04.000 --> 00:05:08.720
How do you stop yourself from procrastinating on the things you know you gotta do?
00:05:09.920 --> 00:05:18.800
Another gift, I thought to myself after the question, another gift of material from my sauna session, perfect for a Monday blog.
00:05:19.360 --> 00:05:25.120
And most of the answers my friend needed were already inside his own question.
00:05:25.759 --> 00:05:29.120
So three-step recipe, three-step recipe.
00:05:29.439 --> 00:05:31.360
Number one, reflect.
00:05:31.759 --> 00:05:33.199
So you already know this.
00:05:33.439 --> 00:05:35.759
Once you start, you keep going.
00:05:36.000 --> 00:05:37.600
So remind yourself of it.
00:05:37.759 --> 00:05:43.839
You know that this works, that when you start the ball rolling, the ball tends to keep on rolling.
00:05:44.160 --> 00:05:48.480
Remind yourself of that, that this is how things work.
00:05:49.040 --> 00:05:55.120
The battle is only ever with the first step, everything after that almost moves on its own.
00:05:55.360 --> 00:05:57.600
There is a law of physics, even for this.
00:05:58.000 --> 00:06:03.360
A body in motion stays in motion, a body at rest stays at rest.
00:06:03.759 --> 00:06:07.519
Once the ball starts rolling, it tends to keep rolling.
00:06:07.680 --> 00:06:09.279
So reflect on that fact.
00:06:09.439 --> 00:06:13.680
And when you want to procrastinate, think about that.
00:06:13.920 --> 00:06:14.399
Huh.
00:06:14.639 --> 00:06:20.319
I know that if I just start doing anything, something, then I'm gonna continue.
00:06:20.560 --> 00:06:22.800
So let me start something.
00:06:23.040 --> 00:06:25.759
And what is it it's best to start?
00:06:26.000 --> 00:06:27.040
The next one.
00:06:27.279 --> 00:06:32.160
But before we jump into the next one, I'm trying to get better at it.
00:06:32.399 --> 00:06:58.720
I want to remind you that in the show notes, uh, you can uh find a link to your own one-on-one coaching session with me, where I can walk you through the exact protocol that you need to dial in your nutrition, your fat loss, your recovery, your sleep, your digestion, your energy levels, your productivity and creative output.
00:06:58.879 --> 00:07:12.240
I'll tell you exactly, like step by step, what's gonna work for you because I worked for 18 years with a lot of people, reading researchers and listening to and very often talking to thought leaders all over the globe, right?
00:07:12.399 --> 00:07:16.480
I know how to stack the thing up so you get to win.
00:07:16.639 --> 00:07:20.000
So feel free to book that session in the show notes.
00:07:20.160 --> 00:07:22.079
And now back to the episode.
00:07:22.319 --> 00:07:23.759
So, first, reflect.
00:07:24.000 --> 00:07:31.519
Second, once you reflect on the fact that once you start going, you keep going, where do you start?
00:07:31.839 --> 00:07:41.279
That is the step number two in a three-step anti-procrastination recipe that I teach to every one of my clients and apply to myself when I'm going through fun.
00:07:41.600 --> 00:07:45.360
So, number two, lower the bar of entry.
00:07:46.079 --> 00:07:52.480
It is far easier to start the ball rolling downhill than uphill.
00:07:53.519 --> 00:07:57.759
So, stop making the beginning harder than it needs to be.
00:07:58.319 --> 00:08:03.199
That's why the smartest way to have your workout is a slow warm-up.
00:08:03.439 --> 00:08:07.600
Once you start, the hardest part gets easier to walk into.
00:08:07.839 --> 00:08:17.680
The woman starts flowing, energy shows up, that motivated feeling you're waiting for, it comes after you start, not before.
00:08:18.240 --> 00:08:21.519
My best workouts always begin with the slowest warm-up.
00:08:22.000 --> 00:08:38.559
So instead of picturing the whole mountain, the entire house to clean, the 10-page report to write, what most people do, and then never get to start it on the title slide, picture the smallest piece instead to start with.
00:08:38.879 --> 00:08:48.639
Two glasses in the sink to wash, one line on the title page, or the part you are actually really excited about to start with, really clear about.
00:08:49.120 --> 00:08:52.720
Let that small roll carry you into the bigger climb.
00:08:52.879 --> 00:09:03.919
Imagine like you roll the ball downhill, and then after it gains momentum, it can roll up all the way that big climb ahead, right?
00:09:04.080 --> 00:09:06.799
Imagine that again, ball down the hill and then uphill.
00:09:06.879 --> 00:09:09.600
That's what you're doing with your own motivation.
00:09:09.840 --> 00:09:15.120
Get the ball rolling and it will keep on rolling even uphill.
00:09:16.240 --> 00:09:20.879
So, what's the simplest, easiest, most exciting way in?
00:09:21.679 --> 00:09:22.559
Start there.
00:09:22.960 --> 00:09:28.559
And you know, Monday they say eat frog on Monday or every morning.
00:09:28.720 --> 00:09:32.159
But you know, sometimes even such a funk, you don't want to eat the freaking frog.
00:09:32.320 --> 00:09:34.159
It will stop you from doing anything.
00:09:34.399 --> 00:09:36.080
So don't always eat the frog.
00:09:36.240 --> 00:09:38.879
Start with the piece of chicken, is into it.
00:09:39.519 --> 00:09:43.039
So this is step number two after you reflect.
00:09:43.279 --> 00:09:44.480
Lower the bar.
00:09:45.120 --> 00:09:46.639
And then, and then what?
00:09:46.879 --> 00:09:47.600
And then what?
00:09:47.759 --> 00:09:53.919
And that is the part number three of three-step anti-procrastination recipe.
00:09:54.159 --> 00:10:02.480
This is the tool I reach for when the first two didn't work, when I'm still stuck in the toughest kind of funk.
00:10:03.360 --> 00:10:05.279
I imagine two futures.
00:10:05.600 --> 00:10:18.960
One where I keep giving up on the things that would move my life and myself forward, and one where I work through them, I lean into them, I embrace the suck, as Navy SEALs would say.
00:10:19.200 --> 00:10:20.320
Which one do you want?
00:10:20.480 --> 00:10:20.799
Right?
00:10:20.879 --> 00:10:22.320
It always reminds me of this.
00:10:22.480 --> 00:10:40.080
There is this moment in Matrix 1 where Trinity opens the car door for Neo, or actually, Neo opens the door, and Trinity grabs his shoulder and tells him, Neo, look at this road.
00:10:40.559 --> 00:10:42.159
You know where it leads.
00:10:43.039 --> 00:10:44.080
You've been there.
00:10:45.600 --> 00:10:46.799
Is this where you want to go?
00:10:46.960 --> 00:10:49.039
Not exact quote, but you understand.
00:10:49.279 --> 00:10:56.399
There are two futures unfolding every time when you think about procrastinating.
00:10:56.639 --> 00:11:02.960
One is the future where you push through hard stuff, and one where you don't.
00:11:03.360 --> 00:11:04.720
Which one do you want?
00:11:05.519 --> 00:11:07.440
Because tomorrow won't be any different.
00:11:07.759 --> 00:11:13.279
Nothing happens between now and then, later, then between now and later that makes the heart think easier.
00:11:13.519 --> 00:11:17.360
No injection of courage or creative genius, no free paths to mastery.
00:11:17.519 --> 00:11:21.279
You still have to become someone you've never been to get somewhere you've never gone.
00:11:21.600 --> 00:11:25.759
The world decides who you become or you do.
00:11:26.399 --> 00:11:27.200
Pick one.
00:11:27.840 --> 00:11:33.039
The same rule holds outside the gym as in the gym.
00:11:33.600 --> 00:11:37.120
Resistance is where the strength gets built.
00:11:37.600 --> 00:11:39.759
It's where the next version of you gets built.
00:11:40.159 --> 00:11:42.480
The heavier the weight, the stronger you get.
00:11:43.039 --> 00:11:44.480
But you gotta lift that weight.
00:11:45.679 --> 00:11:47.200
So you might as well start now.
00:11:48.000 --> 00:11:49.759
Or give up and then what?
00:11:50.080 --> 00:11:50.879
Then what?
00:11:52.000 --> 00:11:53.360
Embrace the sack.
00:11:54.159 --> 00:11:56.480
Obstacle is the way to your next level.
00:11:56.960 --> 00:12:00.080
Just like heavier weight in the gym is the door to your next level.
00:12:00.320 --> 00:12:01.039
Physique.
00:12:02.639 --> 00:12:04.000
So three steps.
00:12:04.159 --> 00:12:10.000
And before we jump into the recap, don't forget to share this episode with at least one other per person.
00:12:10.480 --> 00:12:12.240
Review rate on your platform.
00:12:12.320 --> 00:12:13.759
It really makes a difference, guys.
00:12:13.919 --> 00:12:20.320
It makes this content move into the world, into other people's ears.
00:12:20.480 --> 00:12:28.559
So together we can help each other to get better, to in into the procrastination, into the struggle, and choose to get better.
00:12:28.720 --> 00:12:28.960
Right?
00:12:29.039 --> 00:12:33.840
So please do share this podcast episode, rate review, and then the recap.
00:12:34.159 --> 00:12:40.159
So three-step anti-procrastination recipe that works every freaking time when you decide to use it.
00:12:41.200 --> 00:12:50.879
The next time the funk shows up, once that becomes your habit, you'll just shrug and say without even noticing you said it.
00:12:52.720 --> 00:12:54.399
Might as well get started.
00:12:55.600 --> 00:12:57.919
This is use this three-step recipe.
00:12:58.000 --> 00:13:02.480
Number one, reflect on the fact that when you get going, you keep on going.
00:13:02.799 --> 00:13:05.279
The second thing, lower the bar.
00:13:06.080 --> 00:13:08.960
It's much easier to start rolling downhill.
00:13:11.279 --> 00:13:12.720
Write that title.
00:13:13.440 --> 00:13:14.799
Start easy.
00:13:15.120 --> 00:13:16.480
Ease into that.
00:13:16.720 --> 00:13:18.320
And then you keep on rolling.
00:13:18.480 --> 00:13:24.399
That's how biology works, that's how the world works, that's why they have the law of physics, the body in motion stays in motion.
00:13:24.559 --> 00:13:24.879
Right?
00:13:25.039 --> 00:13:32.480
And once you do the reps, you repeat it many, many times, it becomes a mental habit, not a mood, a mindset, muscle, you condition.
00:13:33.120 --> 00:13:40.159
The same thing, like people ask me, how do you get so disciplined with eating healthy foods, even when you get hungry and tired, etc.?
00:13:40.399 --> 00:13:42.960
I'm like, it's not discipline, it's a habit.
00:13:43.120 --> 00:13:45.679
Plus, I didn't have anything in my fridge but healthy food.
00:13:45.759 --> 00:13:48.879
So when I get hungry, that's the only thing I can eat.
00:13:49.679 --> 00:13:53.440
It becomes a metal habit, and you stop thinking about it.
00:13:53.519 --> 00:13:58.879
And the next time resistance or procrastination shows up, you're like, heck, what else is new?
00:13:59.039 --> 00:14:00.480
Might as well get going now.
00:14:01.840 --> 00:14:04.159
Not willpower, just a better habit.
00:14:04.320 --> 00:14:07.360
Repeat it until it's automatic.
00:14:08.000 --> 00:14:13.840
Nail the process, the three-step process, then put in the reps, and then you got it.
00:14:14.080 --> 00:14:18.159
Your new habit that works for the best of you.
00:14:18.480 --> 00:14:20.559
The next version of you.
00:14:21.519 --> 00:14:23.519
So, the question of the day.
00:14:23.679 --> 00:14:28.320
What's one thing you keep putting off even though you know it's gonna move you to the next level?
00:14:28.559 --> 00:14:29.759
What's that one thing?
00:14:30.320 --> 00:14:34.320
And then apply this three-step process to it.
00:14:34.480 --> 00:14:35.759
Maybe even right now.
