WEBVTT
00:00:00.400 --> 00:00:03.120
Well, Cedar Street Baptist Church, good morning.
00:00:03.520 --> 00:00:06.000
It's so good to be in God's house with God's people.
00:00:06.160 --> 00:00:09.439
I love you so very much, and it's my joy to be with each of you.
00:00:09.679 --> 00:00:12.080
Gosh, I can't believe how fast the calendar is turning.
00:00:12.160 --> 00:00:15.199
We are now in the month of October, like it or not.
00:00:15.599 --> 00:00:22.160
And we are in a series, for those of you visiting, we're in the Gospel of Mark, something I like to do in one calendar year.
00:00:22.480 --> 00:00:28.879
With God's help, I preach through an Old Testament book, a New Testament book, a topic, a doctrine, and then a portion of a gospel.
00:00:28.960 --> 00:00:36.640
We started in 2016 just going verse by verse through every word, and we're all the way up to the middle of chapter 11 now.
00:00:36.799 --> 00:00:40.560
We try to do this every fall for a couple chapters and then we switch to something different.
00:00:40.719 --> 00:00:42.640
But we're in a series of the Gospel of Mark.
00:00:42.719 --> 00:00:44.320
It's called Jesus Is.
00:00:44.799 --> 00:00:51.759
And I want to say, if you're new to the Bible, anytime you read the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John, there's so many things happening.
00:00:51.840 --> 00:00:54.560
There's all these supernatural miracles taking place.
00:00:54.880 --> 00:01:02.240
But we have to understand that the main theme of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John is Jesus is saying, I am the Son of God.
00:01:02.399 --> 00:01:16.719
He demonstrates that he's the Son of God through his power and his authority over nature and demons and religious traditions and blindness and deafness and paralysis and sickness, curses, death, and finally eternal salvation itself.
00:01:16.879 --> 00:01:20.959
Every time we see something that Jesus is doing, he is saying, I am.
00:01:21.200 --> 00:01:25.280
Therefore, our sermon series is entitled, Jesus Is.
00:01:26.319 --> 00:01:32.000
Now, as we turn to Mark 11, we're going to be in chapter 11, verses 20 through 25.
00:01:32.079 --> 00:01:35.120
And the title of our message here is really simple but not easy.
00:01:35.200 --> 00:01:36.400
It's Get Real.
00:01:37.200 --> 00:01:37.840
Get real.
00:01:38.239 --> 00:01:41.120
Jesus is going to get real with us in this passage.
00:01:41.599 --> 00:01:45.519
And we have to recognize and respond if we're going to get real with him.
00:01:46.159 --> 00:01:48.079
Now I want to begin by sharing a story.
00:01:48.239 --> 00:01:52.079
Sometimes the most powerful spiritual lessons can come from physical objects.
00:01:52.239 --> 00:01:55.200
We're going to see that here with the withered fig tree.
00:01:55.920 --> 00:02:01.840
But years ago, one of the best illustrations I ever heard from my pastor and mentor at seminary, Dr.
00:02:01.920 --> 00:02:06.719
Steve Tillis, I'm amazed that his church did not kill him for doing this.
00:02:07.120 --> 00:02:10.000
So I'm not doing this, I'm just sharing what he did.
00:02:11.039 --> 00:02:18.560
But we were at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Raleigh, North Carolina, and in the back of the church was this big, beautiful oak tree.
00:02:18.800 --> 00:02:24.400
It was enormous, and it covered a good portion of the backyard, a lot of shade.
00:02:24.479 --> 00:02:28.319
Every year we had homecoming out there, and they would put the tables out right there in the backyard.
00:02:28.400 --> 00:02:29.199
It's just beautiful.
00:02:29.360 --> 00:02:32.800
It was so beautiful that oak tree was a part of their church logo.
00:02:33.199 --> 00:02:38.719
Well, he gets up there one Sunday and he says, Church, I want to share bad news with you.
00:02:38.879 --> 00:02:44.879
I talked to a tree surgeon, and apparently there's a disease in the tree and it's rotting, and we're going to have to remove the tree.
00:02:45.199 --> 00:02:48.719
And when he said that, there was a collective gasp.
00:02:57.039 --> 00:03:01.680
And he waited about five seconds and he said, Now, now, church, what I what I just did was I lied to you.
00:03:02.080 --> 00:03:04.240
Your pastor just lied to you in church.
00:03:04.479 --> 00:03:07.439
He said, There is no nothing wrong with the tree, there is no tree surge.
00:03:07.520 --> 00:03:14.400
And he said, But we have gasped that much over a tree that we were going to lose.
00:03:14.719 --> 00:03:18.000
How often do we gasp for souls that are lost?
00:03:18.319 --> 00:03:24.240
And then he pointed and said, Raleigh, North Carolina has many lost souls, and we need to reach the loss for Christ.
00:03:24.400 --> 00:03:26.400
I will never forget the day that he did that.
00:03:26.560 --> 00:03:28.800
And you say, Well, that's Raleigh, North Carolina.
00:03:28.879 --> 00:03:31.280
That would never happen in Meadow, Georgia.
00:03:31.759 --> 00:03:40.960
But I've been told, I was not around for it, but I was told in the early 80s when this sanctuary was built, we lost church members that got upset over certain truths getting cut down.
00:03:41.680 --> 00:03:43.120
Let me just say this.
00:03:44.080 --> 00:03:51.520
It is good and it is right to take care of creation and enjoy all that God has made, but a human soul is sacred.
00:03:52.159 --> 00:03:54.080
Absolutely sacred.
00:03:55.280 --> 00:03:59.360
And that's what the two ladies talked about during our missions moment, Paige and Sherry.
00:03:59.439 --> 00:04:03.280
They're dedicating their lives to preserving the sanctity of human life.
00:04:03.439 --> 00:04:04.400
It's sacred.
00:04:04.639 --> 00:04:17.279
And we care about a lot of things, but Jesus is the master of taking these worldly, earthly material or object things that we care so much about and saying, no, no, no, I'm showing this to you so that you can see what's really important.
00:04:17.439 --> 00:04:19.519
And that's what's happening in the human soul.
00:04:19.600 --> 00:04:23.040
And he's going to do it today through a withered fig tree.
00:04:23.279 --> 00:04:27.839
He's going to do it today through this tree that a couple of weeks ago he cursed.
00:04:28.079 --> 00:04:34.720
Now, a couple of weeks ago, when he approached this fig tree, he cursed it for not bearing fruit, even though it had green leaves.
00:04:34.879 --> 00:04:37.680
He was dealing with outward hypocrisy.
00:04:38.000 --> 00:04:41.519
But last week he goes into the temple of God and flips over the tables.
00:04:41.680 --> 00:04:44.720
Last week he was dealing with inward corruption.
00:04:44.959 --> 00:04:57.439
Well, today he's going to re-examine this tree that he cursed a short while ago, and he's talking today about the cause and effect of the decisions we make in our spiritual life.
00:04:57.759 --> 00:05:01.759
Every decision you make or don't make affects your soul.
00:05:01.839 --> 00:05:03.680
And he's going to be talking about that.
00:05:03.839 --> 00:05:07.199
And he's going to challenge us, as the title says, to get real.
00:05:07.519 --> 00:05:11.680
And as you hear him speaking to his disciples, he is speaking to each of us.
00:05:11.759 --> 00:05:12.800
So what's our big idea?
00:05:12.879 --> 00:05:14.000
I want to get right into it.
00:05:14.160 --> 00:05:16.000
In one sentence, here it is.
00:05:16.560 --> 00:05:25.600
Jesus uses the withered fig tree to challenge us to get real about our fruit, our faith, and our forgiveness.
00:05:25.839 --> 00:05:33.279
Again, Jesus uses the withered fig tree to challenge us to get real about our fruit, our faith, and our forgiveness.
00:05:33.360 --> 00:05:40.079
So if you want to know more about how Jesus is challenging us to get real, turn with me, if you would, to the Gospel of Mark.
00:05:40.319 --> 00:05:42.800
Again, if you're new to the Bible, it's in your New Testament.
00:05:42.959 --> 00:05:45.120
If it's after Matthew, it's before Luke.
00:05:45.279 --> 00:05:48.319
And if you don't have a Bible, grab the Pew Bible in front of you or beside you.
00:05:48.399 --> 00:05:51.199
We're on page 1007 in your pew Bible.
00:05:51.279 --> 00:06:05.040
And if you would stand at this time, out of the reverence to the reading of God's holy, infallible, inerrant, and fully sufficient word, we are in Mark chapter 11, and we're looking at verses 20 through 25.
00:06:05.279 --> 00:06:08.879
Hear God's word to us, starting in verse 20.
00:06:09.199 --> 00:06:14.800
It says, As they passed by in the morning, they saw the fig tree withered away to its roots.
00:06:14.879 --> 00:06:19.279
And Peter remembered and said to him, Rabbi, look, the fig tree that you cursed is withered.
00:06:19.519 --> 00:06:22.959
And Jesus answered them, Have faith in God.
00:06:23.600 --> 00:06:34.399
Truly I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, be taken up and thrown into the sea, and does not doubt it in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him.
00:06:34.639 --> 00:06:40.079
Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.
00:06:40.160 --> 00:06:51.120
And what whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father also, who is in heaven, may forgive you your trespasses.
00:06:51.439 --> 00:06:52.399
Let's pray.
00:06:56.639 --> 00:06:58.959
Gracious Heavenly Father, we love you.
00:07:00.319 --> 00:07:02.800
And we are gathered here today to worship you.
00:07:04.079 --> 00:07:09.519
And much like a withered fig tree, Lord, our eyes, our minds, our hearts, they're focused on worldly things.
00:07:10.399 --> 00:07:12.959
Not unimportant, just not what's most important.
00:07:13.920 --> 00:07:20.800
With all that's happening right now in our hearts and minds in this hour, clear the distractions.
00:07:21.120 --> 00:07:26.079
Help us, Lord, to focus in on how you're speaking to each one of us.
00:07:26.560 --> 00:07:34.399
How you're asking us to get real with you about our spiritual life and the things that we're doing, and maybe the things that we're not doing are the things that need to change.
00:07:35.120 --> 00:07:37.519
So, Lord, I pray that you would speak to each of us.
00:07:37.680 --> 00:07:41.040
I know that you will, but help us to be open to hear it.
00:07:41.360 --> 00:07:44.959
So be with us right now, I pray, in Jesus' name, and God's people said.
00:07:45.519 --> 00:07:46.160
Amen.
00:07:48.639 --> 00:07:57.439
Okay, now if you were not here last week, I try to give us key words so that if you're new to the Bible and you're new to the passage, you can kind of hang on to them.
00:07:57.680 --> 00:08:08.399
All right, so last week when I talked about the temple, I said there's two words that you have to understand or you will not understand why Jesus stormed the temple and flipped over the tables of the money changers.
00:08:08.560 --> 00:08:12.639
Last week the two words were worship and witness.
00:08:13.120 --> 00:08:29.439
We said the reason he was so angry about the temple of God being a marketplace was it was supposed to be a place of worship, but also the Gentiles, the non-believers, were supposed to be in that one spot, the courtyard of the Gentiles, to witness what true worship was all about.
00:08:29.600 --> 00:08:31.120
So that was last week.
00:08:31.360 --> 00:08:36.559
Well, today, as we look at this passage, verses 20 through 25, I'm gonna give you two more words.
00:08:37.039 --> 00:08:40.159
If you don't get these two words, you're gonna miss this passage.
00:08:40.480 --> 00:08:47.360
The two words I want you to hang on to from now to the end of the message is this trust and dependence.
00:08:47.840 --> 00:08:48.159
Okay?
00:08:48.799 --> 00:08:51.759
Trust and dependence.
00:08:51.919 --> 00:08:53.200
I love the word trust.
00:08:53.360 --> 00:09:03.360
You know, a lot of people say faith, and we're gonna use the word faith here in a minute, but trust to me is the best way to define the word faith, because you could say faith is just believing with your mind.
00:09:03.840 --> 00:09:08.960
All right, but even Satan believes with his mind that Jesus is Lord more than you do.
00:09:09.200 --> 00:09:11.440
But he doesn't trust him as Lord.
00:09:11.679 --> 00:09:15.360
No, when you begin to trust, that's where your faith really takes root.
00:09:15.519 --> 00:09:21.519
And when you trust in Jesus, you begin to depend on him for everything in your life.
00:09:21.679 --> 00:09:26.720
That's a hard sell for us, especially as prosperous 21st century Americans.
00:09:27.039 --> 00:09:36.960
We have lots of gifts and resources available to us every day, and we want to trust in something other than Christ.
00:09:37.360 --> 00:09:40.639
Because to trust in Jesus, we have to be like a child.
00:09:40.960 --> 00:09:42.720
And a lot of us want to do things on our own.
00:09:42.799 --> 00:09:44.240
We don't want to trust God.
00:09:44.960 --> 00:09:49.759
We want God to support us in trusting ourselves, and that's not God's agenda, that's our agenda.
00:09:50.080 --> 00:09:54.159
And Jesus is, oh, he specializes in exposing human hearts.
00:09:54.320 --> 00:09:57.360
Nobody can get to the heart better than Jesus.
00:09:57.600 --> 00:10:01.200
And he does it by pointing to a withered fig tree.
00:10:01.840 --> 00:10:09.360
Now, there's one thing that gets in the way of this trust and dependence, and it's a word I want you to think about throughout this message as well, and that's pride.
00:10:10.240 --> 00:10:12.480
Pride is what caused original sin.
00:10:12.960 --> 00:10:22.960
Pride is when we reject Jesus and we want to be the Lord of our own life, and pride will keep us from trusting him and experiencing the grace that God wants to pour out in all of our lives.
00:10:23.360 --> 00:10:24.320
So let's look at this.
00:10:24.480 --> 00:10:25.759
Let's get right into it.
00:10:26.080 --> 00:10:31.519
I want to walk through this, and we're gonna get real about your fruit, your faith, and your forgiveness.
00:10:31.679 --> 00:10:33.919
So, number one, get real about your fruit.
00:10:34.159 --> 00:10:36.399
All right, verses 20 through 21.
00:10:36.639 --> 00:10:48.399
It says, As they passed by in the morning, they saw the fig tree withered away at its roots, and Peter remembered and said to him, Rabbi, look, the fig tree that you cursed has withered.
00:10:48.960 --> 00:10:51.200
Now, why was the tree withered?
00:10:51.279 --> 00:10:54.720
If you remember a couple weeks ago, and if you were not here, I'll just catch you up again.
00:10:54.879 --> 00:11:11.919
They're walking in Jerusalem, the final week of Jesus' life, and Jesus is hungry, and he goes to a fig tree, and even though it was not the season for figs, there were lots of green leaves giving out the symbol that it was bearing fruit, but it wasn't.
00:11:12.159 --> 00:11:21.840
So he goes to the tree, reaches for fruit, he does not find any, and then he curses the fig tree and says, You will never bear fruit again.
00:11:22.080 --> 00:11:26.720
And he did that as a symbol of the spiritual condition of Israel.
00:11:26.879 --> 00:11:35.600
He was coming to Jerusalem, the holy city, and he was wanting to see true worship from his covenant children, and they were not worshiping the one true God.
00:11:35.840 --> 00:11:37.759
Their hearts were far from God.
00:11:37.919 --> 00:11:46.080
And he's saying, just like this tree is claiming to bear fruit and it doesn't, you also are called to bear fruit and you're not.
00:11:46.559 --> 00:11:48.559
Now, what does he mean by fruit?
00:11:48.879 --> 00:11:58.799
Well, I made the argument, and I'll make it again here today, the fruit that he wants is intimate relationship, first with God and then with each other.
00:11:58.960 --> 00:12:03.279
We know this because he sums up the whole law by saying, Love God and love others.
00:12:03.440 --> 00:12:07.440
Now that sounds easy, but it's impossible without God's help.
00:12:07.759 --> 00:12:16.559
You were planted in the orchard of God to bear the fruit of intimate relationship, first with God and then with each other.
00:12:16.720 --> 00:12:23.840
So if you're living a life separated from God, you cannot bear fruit because you don't have the root.
00:12:24.559 --> 00:12:25.679
You're made for God.
00:12:25.840 --> 00:12:28.000
God's not here for us, we're here for Him.
00:12:28.240 --> 00:12:35.200
And He loves you and He desires to have true intimate relationship with each one of you in a different way.
00:12:35.519 --> 00:12:49.519
But if you're living your life without Him and you keep Him out at arm's length and you don't want Him to be in control of how the decisions you're making in your life, you keep Him at arm's length when you're living, well, God's gonna hand him you over to what you really want when you pass.
00:12:49.840 --> 00:12:52.240
I heard a pastor say this the other day and it was sobering.
00:12:52.480 --> 00:12:56.320
He says, eventually God gives people what they really want.
00:12:56.639 --> 00:13:00.399
If you don't want Jesus, he'll hand you over to what you really want.
00:13:00.480 --> 00:13:06.559
And if what you really want is not Jesus, you're gonna find out eventually it's gonna leave you dry and empty.
00:13:06.879 --> 00:13:10.399
You have a soul and a heart that was made for God alone.
00:13:11.440 --> 00:13:13.200
This is the fruit that he's looking for.
00:13:13.360 --> 00:13:18.080
And Peter goes back to the tree with the disciples, and Peter, of course, is obsessed about the tree.
00:13:18.240 --> 00:13:23.600
Jesus, look at the tree! Look at the tree, Lord, the tree that you cursed, it's withered.
00:13:24.159 --> 00:13:28.080
And Jesus immediately begins to talk about spiritual things.
00:13:28.240 --> 00:13:31.200
Now, before I look at our second point, I want to say this.
00:13:31.519 --> 00:13:42.720
Later on, when Jesus has all the disciples in the upper room, he talks about fruit and he talks about trees and he talks about the danger of being fruitless.
00:13:42.960 --> 00:13:51.039
In John 15, this famous passage about abiding in Jesus, in verses 1 through 2, he says, I am the true vine, and my father is the vine dresser.
00:13:51.200 --> 00:13:54.639
Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away.
00:13:54.960 --> 00:13:59.200
And every branch that does bear fruit he prunes that it may bear more fruit.
00:13:59.519 --> 00:14:02.320
Jesus is serious about spiritual fruit.
00:14:02.639 --> 00:14:08.159
When you die, you will be handed over to what you really want.
00:14:08.480 --> 00:14:16.960
If you don't want Jesus now, you're not going to want him in eternity, and hell will be a place of separation from him because you didn't want him while you were here.
00:14:17.840 --> 00:14:22.559
And it's not his will that any should perish, but all should come to a knowledge of the proof of the truth.
00:14:22.720 --> 00:14:25.600
Ezekiel says he takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked.
00:14:25.759 --> 00:14:31.600
He desires for every every person made in his image to come and know him and worship him and trust him.
00:14:32.240 --> 00:14:39.120
But if you reject him now and you take your final breath, he will hand you over to what it is that you really want.
00:14:39.279 --> 00:14:43.039
And so that's why right now he's saying, get real about your fruit.
00:14:43.200 --> 00:14:45.440
Get real about your relationship.
00:14:45.679 --> 00:14:48.399
Is Jesus the centerpiece of your life?
00:14:49.759 --> 00:14:51.360
Do you share your heart with him?
00:14:52.000 --> 00:14:55.039
Do you ask for his guidance as you're making decisions?
00:14:55.279 --> 00:15:00.559
Do you see that the way you're spending your time and your money and your energy as acts of worship to him?
00:15:00.960 --> 00:15:05.200
Do you recognize what he's doing in other people's lives and do you participate in that?
00:15:05.279 --> 00:15:07.039
Do you share what God's done in your life?
00:15:07.200 --> 00:15:09.360
This is the fruit that he's looking for.
00:15:10.080 --> 00:15:10.879
That's number one.
00:15:10.960 --> 00:15:12.000
Get real about your fruit.
00:15:12.159 --> 00:15:13.759
Well, all this is connected.
00:15:13.840 --> 00:15:17.120
As we talk about a relationship, we can't help but get past that word faith.
00:15:17.200 --> 00:15:19.279
So number two, get real about your faith.
00:15:19.600 --> 00:15:25.200
All right, verses 2 through 24, as Peter's saying, Look at the tree, Jesus says, No, look at me.
00:15:26.000 --> 00:15:26.320
All right?
00:15:26.480 --> 00:15:28.320
Jesus answered them, Have faith in God.
00:15:28.480 --> 00:15:39.120
Truly I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, be taken up and thrown into the sea, and does not doubt in his heart, but believes what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him.
00:15:39.279 --> 00:15:46.000
Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.
00:15:48.559 --> 00:15:50.559
Now let me take a deep breath.
00:15:51.360 --> 00:15:53.519
This is a challenging passage.
00:15:54.240 --> 00:15:58.879
And I want to do everything I can to be helpful to you as your pastor, your brother, and your friend.
00:15:59.279 --> 00:16:06.879
Unfortunately, this passage has been it has been ripped out of its context many times over the years.
00:16:07.279 --> 00:16:14.720
There's something in the 20th and 21st century known as the Word of Faith movement, and it's been very damaging to the body of Christ.
00:16:14.879 --> 00:16:19.840
The Word of Faith movement, using this passage, says, you can have whatever it is that you want.
00:16:20.000 --> 00:16:22.960
If you name it, you can claim it.
00:16:23.200 --> 00:16:26.639
And that is not what I would call true worship and trusting God.
00:16:26.799 --> 00:16:29.440
That's God, that's making God a magic genie.
00:16:29.519 --> 00:16:34.399
And you rub the bottle, whatever it is that you want, he will do it when you say, and he will do it how you say it.
00:16:34.559 --> 00:16:36.399
That's not how our God works.
00:16:36.720 --> 00:16:43.919
And the word of faith movement has it really has damaged a lot of true biblical Christian faith in this country.
00:16:44.799 --> 00:16:48.080
But at the same time, there's two extremes.
00:16:48.639 --> 00:16:53.120
The one extreme is I'm gonna name it and claim it I can have whatever I want.
00:16:53.440 --> 00:16:54.799
He's gonna do whatever I ask.
00:16:54.879 --> 00:16:57.679
If I ask it in prayer, and I believe that he'll do it, he'll do it.
00:16:57.840 --> 00:16:59.840
That's one extreme called the word of faith movement.
00:17:00.000 --> 00:17:03.440
The other extreme is even more dangerous, and that is we don't pray at all.
00:17:03.759 --> 00:17:05.680
We don't believe that God hears us.
00:17:05.920 --> 00:17:09.680
We don't believe that God can, and so we take matters into our own hands.
00:17:09.839 --> 00:17:15.039
I'd say for most of us, we're probably a lot more in danger of that than we are the word of faith movement.
00:17:15.200 --> 00:17:19.039
We simply don't go to God when we're in trouble.
00:17:19.279 --> 00:17:25.519
We double down on our own effort, our own strength, our own bootstraps, and I'm gonna get this done in my own effort.
00:17:25.599 --> 00:17:28.480
And if I have to work harder, I'm working harder, but I'm gonna do it my way.
00:17:28.640 --> 00:17:31.599
And we don't recognize that's not the way God made you.
00:17:32.319 --> 00:17:37.039
God made us to be fully dependent upon him every single day.
00:17:37.200 --> 00:17:39.599
The problem is he's given many of us gifts.
00:17:39.759 --> 00:17:45.920
Now they're from him, but those gifts were never so that we would depend on ourselves and not him, but that we would praise him.
00:17:46.240 --> 00:17:49.519
But no, we use those gifts to depend on ourselves.
00:17:49.759 --> 00:17:56.960
And so he's telling us right now to get real about our faith, to get real about our faith and to trust in him.
00:17:57.119 --> 00:18:02.799
And the way that you exercise that trust is daily dependent prayer.
00:18:03.200 --> 00:18:03.839
And guess what?
00:18:04.000 --> 00:18:05.839
Prayer's the hardest thing I know.
00:18:06.000 --> 00:18:11.200
I've been in ministry almost two decades, and I will tell you this: I've made baby steps in my prayer life.
00:18:11.440 --> 00:18:14.000
You want to find the strongest prayer warriors in your church?
00:18:14.160 --> 00:18:15.599
Don't look at the pulpit.
00:18:15.839 --> 00:18:17.440
Look at the gray hair.
00:18:17.920 --> 00:18:21.039
Look at the ones that have been walking with Jesus 50 and 60 years.
00:18:21.200 --> 00:18:27.039
They got where they are today because they learned how to walk in daily dependent prayer.
00:18:28.160 --> 00:18:32.720
Now, it says here that if you have this kind of daily dependent prayer, you can move mountains.
00:18:32.880 --> 00:18:34.160
What does he mean by that?
00:18:34.319 --> 00:18:41.440
Well, you have to understand in Jewish literature, the mountain, and again, they're in Jerusalem, which is known as Mount Zion.
00:18:41.599 --> 00:18:47.039
They're in a mountainous area, the mountain is known as something large and immovable.
00:18:47.680 --> 00:18:48.160
All right?
00:18:48.319 --> 00:18:58.000
He's talking about something in your life, whatever it is, that is so big and immovable, you simply cannot move it in your own strength.
00:18:58.319 --> 00:19:01.039
He's saying that's where prayer comes into play.
00:19:01.359 --> 00:19:04.319
Because our God is a mountain mover.
00:19:05.039 --> 00:19:07.839
We in our own power cannot move mountains.
00:19:07.920 --> 00:19:10.160
That's what mountains are there for, they're immovable.
00:19:10.400 --> 00:19:11.759
But God can do all things.
00:19:11.839 --> 00:19:18.000
And he is telling Peter, if you really want to grow, you have better learn to pray.
00:19:18.960 --> 00:19:26.400
Now, to make sure that we don't take this passage out of context, I want to do something today I haven't done in a long time.
00:19:27.200 --> 00:19:34.000
And I'm gonna go through it quickly right now, but if you have an interest in this, we're gonna be doing this for our Sunday night study tonight.
00:19:34.240 --> 00:19:40.000
Over the years, I have had many people come to me with tears in their eyes and they said, Bo, I don't understand.
00:19:40.079 --> 00:19:48.799
I I've been praying and I believe that God can do it, but I've not seen God respond to my prayers.
00:19:49.119 --> 00:19:50.400
What am I doing wrong?
00:19:50.559 --> 00:19:51.839
I've prayed that in my own life.
00:19:52.000 --> 00:19:57.359
Lord, I've been I've been I've been meditating on this, I've been petitioning you, I haven't seen any changes.
00:19:57.599 --> 00:19:58.960
Am I doing something wrong?
00:19:59.119 --> 00:20:01.440
Why have you not answered this prayer?
00:20:01.920 --> 00:20:10.799
And so to put it in its right context, because every single passage, if you just look at the passage and not what everything scripture says, you can rip it out of its context.
00:20:10.960 --> 00:20:14.640
I came up with something, and I have copies of it right here on this ledge.
00:20:14.720 --> 00:20:22.960
I have it in the vestibule, and I'm gonna go through this real fast, but we're gonna look at this together in detail tonight for those that want to come back for Sunday night study.
00:20:23.200 --> 00:20:28.160
According to the Bible, here's 10 reasons for unanswered prayer.
00:20:28.240 --> 00:20:34.240
Now, if you're a note taker, again, I got the whole sheet, so you're gonna get a hand cramped if you try to keep up with me because I got to go quick.
00:20:34.480 --> 00:20:39.440
But I just want to read the reason and the scripture, and then we're gonna talk about this more tonight.
00:20:39.599 --> 00:20:42.319
Why is it when you pray, you don't immediately see an answer?
00:20:42.480 --> 00:20:46.400
Well, number one, our prayers may go unanswered when we don't ask at all.
00:20:46.480 --> 00:20:48.400
That's the problem I talked about a few minutes ago.
00:20:48.640 --> 00:20:52.400
James 4, verse 2 says, you do not have because you do not ask.
00:20:52.640 --> 00:20:55.200
So the biggest problem is we don't pray enough.
00:20:55.519 --> 00:20:57.359
But maybe we are praying and we're not seeing it.
00:20:57.440 --> 00:21:02.079
And then number two, our prayers may go unanswered when we ask with wrong motives.
00:21:02.400 --> 00:21:08.799
James chapter 4, verse 3 says, You ask and do not receive because you ask wrongly to spend it on your own passions.
00:21:08.960 --> 00:21:11.039
Sometimes we don't want things to honor God.
00:21:11.119 --> 00:21:13.759
We just want things for our own selfish desires.
00:21:14.000 --> 00:21:18.480
Number three, our prayers may go unanswered when we ask without believing that God can.
00:21:18.960 --> 00:21:29.839
In Mark chapter 6, verses 5 through 6, it said, And he could not do mighty works there except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and healed them, and he marveled because of their unbelief.
00:21:30.079 --> 00:21:38.079
You have got to believe in the very fabric of your soul that our God is infinite in his power and he can do anything.
00:21:38.319 --> 00:21:43.440
And you and I need to learn to pray big prayers because we trust in a big God.
00:21:44.319 --> 00:21:48.880
Number five, our prayers may go unanswered when we ask with unconfessed sin.
00:21:49.440 --> 00:21:55.359
Maybe God wants to answer our prayer, but he says, You and I are going to deal with this first before I listen to anything else you have to say.
00:21:55.519 --> 00:22:04.079
In Psalm 66 18, David says this If I had cherished and Iniquity in my heart, the Lord would not have listened.
00:22:04.640 --> 00:22:06.559
You know this as a parent.
00:22:08.319 --> 00:22:18.720
You ask your child to do something and they don't do it, but then they ask you for a favor, they ask you for a gift or a blessing, and you say, I love you, but I'm not talking to you about this until you do what I asked you to do.
00:22:18.960 --> 00:22:21.839
That's just common parent-child relationship.
00:22:22.000 --> 00:22:27.680
There are things that God has told us to turn away from, and there's other things that God has told us to go towards.
00:22:27.839 --> 00:22:32.799
And if we won't listen to him, then we can't always expect that he's going to listen to us.
00:22:33.039 --> 00:22:36.079
He wants us to confess sin.
00:22:37.599 --> 00:22:40.000
All right, uh, I think I skipped over one.
00:22:40.240 --> 00:22:41.279
Uh yeah, number four.
00:22:41.599 --> 00:22:42.640
Forgive me for skipping over it.
00:22:42.720 --> 00:22:46.559
Uh, our prayers may go unanswered when number four, we ask outside of God's will.
00:22:46.720 --> 00:22:54.319
1 John 5.14 says, and this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.
00:22:54.559 --> 00:23:10.640
Now, I think you should pray about everything, but if you're praying for something completely against the will of God, if you're walking with God, he will give you conviction and understanding in time that what you're praying for is not his will, and he'll give you a desire to know what his will is.
00:23:11.519 --> 00:23:16.319
Like the great theologian Garth Brooks once said, I praise God for unanswered prayers.
00:23:16.480 --> 00:23:21.200
There's things we ask, and we have no idea how bad it would be if God actually gave it to us.
00:23:22.079 --> 00:23:23.680
That's why we trust God.
00:23:23.920 --> 00:23:26.319
All right, number six, I'm back on track now.
00:23:26.559 --> 00:23:30.240
Our prayers may go unanswered when we ask with an unrepentant lifestyle.
00:23:30.400 --> 00:23:35.599
Proverbs 15, 29 says, The Lord is far from the wicked, but he hears the prayer of the righteous.
00:23:35.759 --> 00:23:41.680
If you're living a lifestyle that is contrary to the word of God, I'm not saying he doesn't love you.
00:23:41.839 --> 00:23:47.680
I'm saying that what he the next prayer he's waiting for is, I repent and I confess.
00:23:48.240 --> 00:23:50.799
I was wrong and I turn away from this lifestyle.
00:23:51.039 --> 00:23:56.319
If you're walking in that kind of life, he's waiting for a prayer of repentance before anything else.
00:23:56.559 --> 00:24:01.119
All right, number seven, our prayers may go unanswered when we ask with unresolved conflict.
00:24:01.200 --> 00:24:02.960
This one is big, especially for husbands.
00:24:03.119 --> 00:24:09.039
It says in 1 Peter chapter 3, verse 7, likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way.
00:24:09.200 --> 00:24:13.279
And at the end it says, so that your prayers may not be hindered.
00:24:13.680 --> 00:24:19.200
Maybe you're asking for these big things, and God's saying, you know what, your marriage is a lot more important than what you're asking for.
00:24:19.279 --> 00:24:25.119
Why don't you focus on resolving the issues on the home front, and then I'll listen to some of these other things you're praying for.
00:24:26.000 --> 00:24:27.359
Number eight, this is a big one.
00:24:27.440 --> 00:24:30.960
Our prayers may go unanswered when we ask, but God says, wait.
00:24:31.279 --> 00:24:33.039
He may not be saying no.
00:24:33.839 --> 00:24:35.759
He may be saying, not yet.
00:24:36.079 --> 00:24:37.279
He may be saying, wait on me.
00:24:37.440 --> 00:24:41.359
Psalm 27, 14 says, wait for the Lord, be strong, and let your heart take courage.
00:24:41.519 --> 00:24:42.880
Wait for the Lord.
00:24:43.519 --> 00:24:44.400
Two more.
00:24:44.799 --> 00:24:48.720
Our prayers may go unanswered when number nine, we ask, but God's grace is sufficient.
00:24:48.880 --> 00:24:50.160
This is a huge one.
00:24:50.400 --> 00:24:51.839
Paul learned this the hard way.
00:24:52.000 --> 00:24:55.039
2 Corinthians chapter 12, verses 8 through 9.
00:24:55.279 --> 00:25:02.559
Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, Paul's saying about a thorn in his flesh, but it it that it should leave me.
00:25:02.640 --> 00:25:08.160
But he said to me, My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.
00:25:08.319 --> 00:25:14.000
Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
00:25:14.640 --> 00:25:16.559
This verse kills the word of faith movement.
00:25:16.720 --> 00:25:21.519
The word of faith says, if you have enough faith and you name it and you claim it, God will do whatever you want.
00:25:21.680 --> 00:25:22.319
Well, guess what?
00:25:22.400 --> 00:25:24.880
You're saying you have more faith than the Apostle Paul.
00:25:25.119 --> 00:25:27.599
Because Paul had a thorn in his flesh, and we don't know what it is.
00:25:27.680 --> 00:25:30.240
Some scholars think it was declining eyesight.
00:25:30.559 --> 00:25:36.160
Some scholars think it was the false teachers and ethicists that were attacking his ministry.
00:25:36.319 --> 00:25:37.440
Whatever it is, we don't know.
00:25:37.599 --> 00:25:40.319
We just know he prayed three times for God to take it away.
00:25:40.400 --> 00:25:44.000
And God says, I'm not going to remove this trouble from your life.
00:25:44.160 --> 00:25:48.160
I'm going to, I'm doing too much good work by allowing it to remain in your life.
00:25:48.319 --> 00:25:56.240
Your faith is growing, and your trust and dependence on me will grow more if I leave the thorn than if I take it away.
00:25:57.759 --> 00:26:01.920
And then number 10, and this goes into our final passage here in Mark 11.
00:26:02.079 --> 00:26:04.960
Our prayers may go unanswered if we ask without forgiving others.
00:26:05.119 --> 00:26:09.519
Forgiveness is a big deal in the family of God.
00:26:09.839 --> 00:26:12.319
Matthew chapter 6, verses 14 through 15.
00:26:12.480 --> 00:26:17.519
If you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly father will also forgive you.
00:26:17.680 --> 00:26:23.599
But if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your father forgive your trespasses.
00:26:24.079 --> 00:26:38.880
If you refuse to forgive somebody, I don't care what name they called you, I don't care what they said about your kids, I don't care what they did to your business, I don't care what they did to your property, I don't care what it is, it could be horrible.
00:26:39.119 --> 00:26:40.480
And a lot of times it can be.
00:26:40.559 --> 00:26:42.559
We can do really horrible things to each other.
00:26:42.799 --> 00:26:54.240
If you withhold forgiveness for anybody for any reason whatsoever, you simply don't understand how wretched your own sin is and how God forgave you.
00:26:54.640 --> 00:26:58.960
You don't understand your salvation if you withhold forgiveness for people no matter what they've done to you.
00:26:59.119 --> 00:27:05.599
And if you withhold forgiveness, you're not walking in grace, and God may not be inclined to hear your prayer.
00:27:05.759 --> 00:27:09.519
Maybe right now you're in this place and you are holding a grudge.
00:27:09.839 --> 00:27:12.480
Somebody has wounded you deeply.
00:27:12.799 --> 00:27:17.920
And God's saying, I love you and I want to heal that, but I can't listen to all these other prayers right now.
00:27:18.240 --> 00:27:19.440
I want to deal with what's important.
00:27:19.599 --> 00:27:21.200
You need to forgive this person.
00:27:22.079 --> 00:27:23.839
You need to let it go.
00:27:25.279 --> 00:27:28.720
And I want to talk more about that here because that leads us right into our third point.
00:27:28.880 --> 00:27:31.359
Number three, get real about your forgiveness.
00:27:31.599 --> 00:27:32.799
Verse 25.
00:27:33.119 --> 00:27:43.599
And whenever you stand praying, forgive if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.
00:27:44.000 --> 00:27:49.200
Again, if you and I cannot forgive others, we don't recognize how much God had to forgive us.
00:27:49.519 --> 00:27:52.319
You know, here's the thing.
00:27:52.559 --> 00:27:56.480
We're just not offended about our own sin the way we are about other people's.
00:27:56.640 --> 00:28:00.160
I experienced something a few weeks ago, and I don't think this is uncommon.
00:28:00.240 --> 00:28:05.599
I think this is an everyday thing, but it made me so uncomfortable, my blood started rising.
00:28:06.400 --> 00:28:18.720
I went to visit uh a family close to this community that I had not seen in a long time, and I was sitting there having lunch with them, and WTOC was on the news.
00:28:19.759 --> 00:28:22.880
Uh it was like the 12 o'clock, you know, news or whatever.
00:28:23.039 --> 00:28:24.160
I don't know what the stories were.
00:28:24.240 --> 00:28:32.960
They had it muted, we're sitting there eating, but as I was sitting there with the couple, the the wife pointed at the screen and said, You believe what happened in Savannah yesterday?
00:28:33.279 --> 00:28:33.920
And I said, No.
00:28:34.079 --> 00:28:36.000
She went, makes me sick.
00:28:36.319 --> 00:28:38.160
Just makes me sick.
00:28:38.799 --> 00:28:44.079
And you know, there was just such a tone of self-righteousness in what she said.
00:28:44.640 --> 00:28:48.240
I thought to myself, have you ever been that sickened over your own sin?
00:28:49.039 --> 00:28:51.839
Yes, what we watch on the news is sickening.
00:28:52.079 --> 00:28:53.359
Murder is sickening.
00:28:53.519 --> 00:28:54.559
Guess what Jesus said?
00:28:54.720 --> 00:29:00.319
If you have anger in your heart for another person, you have the heart of a murderer.
00:29:01.200 --> 00:29:04.400
Jesus really is being serious when he says these things.
00:29:04.640 --> 00:29:13.039
You and I, evidence that you're walking with God is you'll never be more offended by the world than you are by your own sin.
00:29:13.519 --> 00:29:16.640
And some of us are way too impressed with our own selves.
00:29:16.799 --> 00:29:33.680
We're not aware, we're not sensitive to the prompting of the Holy Spirit, because if you're walking with him and you're sensitive to the Spirit, he's going to show you every time that you're arrogant, every time that you're prideful, every time that you're boastful, every time that you have thoughts and words that don't honor him.
00:29:33.839 --> 00:29:37.440
And trust me when I say this, it's it's excruciating sometimes.
00:29:37.599 --> 00:29:43.200
If you tell God, God, humble me, he says, I've been, that's a prayer I've been waiting to answer.
00:29:43.440 --> 00:29:45.920
And he will do it because he loves us.
00:29:46.559 --> 00:29:56.000
And if you look in the scriptures, you'll find that when people are growing closer to God, it's not that they're sinning less, it's that they're more aware of their sin than they've ever been.
00:29:56.240 --> 00:30:01.599
If you don't believe me, listen to how people talk about their sin when they're in the presence of God.
00:30:02.079 --> 00:30:08.240
Job at the end of his life said, I despise myself and I put on sackcloth and ashes for questioning you.
00:30:08.400 --> 00:30:11.039
Peter said, Depart from me, for I'm an evil man.
00:30:11.279 --> 00:30:13.920
Paul says, I'm the chief of sinners.
00:30:14.240 --> 00:30:20.240
I mean, listen to the, you know, Isaiah, when he's in the presence of God, he says, Woe is me, a man of unclean lips.
00:30:20.880 --> 00:30:23.519
They're not just being cute or poetic.
00:30:23.759 --> 00:30:26.960
They recognize his holiness and how far they fall short.
00:30:27.039 --> 00:30:32.079
And if you recognize his holiness, you'll recognize you don't have enough time to point fingers at other people.
00:30:32.240 --> 00:30:35.519
You got plenty on your plate to keep you busy until Jesus comes back.
00:30:35.759 --> 00:30:37.039
The same is true of me.
00:30:37.200 --> 00:30:42.079
There's so much arrogance and pride in my heart that God wants to deal with.
00:30:42.799 --> 00:30:46.960
And this is where Jesus is saying to Peter and to us, get real.
00:30:47.519 --> 00:30:54.880
If you want Jesus to get real with you, start forgiving other people that don't deserve it because you didn't deserve it when he forgave you.
00:30:55.200 --> 00:30:56.559
Start forgiving other people.
00:30:56.720 --> 00:30:58.880
Now let me say this before we pray out.
00:30:59.680 --> 00:31:02.400
How do I know that I've truly forgiven somebody?
00:31:02.720 --> 00:31:07.519
There's things that forgiveness is, and there's things that forgiveness is not.
00:31:08.960 --> 00:31:09.599
All right?
00:31:09.839 --> 00:31:11.920
Don't worry, brother, I forgive you.
00:31:14.480 --> 00:31:21.440
Forgiveness is not a feeling, forgiveness is not forgetting, and forgiveness is not excusing.
00:31:21.759 --> 00:31:24.720
There's things that people have done to you that you'll never forget.
00:31:25.200 --> 00:31:27.359
It'd be impossible to say that you could forget it.
00:31:27.440 --> 00:31:33.119
And it's not about feeling like I want to forgive, and it's not about saying it was okay, that it was not okay what they did.
00:31:33.279 --> 00:31:36.000
Here's what forgiveness is, according to Ken Sandy.
00:31:36.079 --> 00:31:37.680
By the way, great book if you've never read it.
00:31:37.759 --> 00:31:39.200
It's called The Peacemaker.
00:31:39.359 --> 00:31:42.000
It's the best book on biblical forgiveness I've ever read.
00:31:42.160 --> 00:31:43.599
He says there's four promises.
00:31:43.759 --> 00:31:49.119
Every couple I do premarital counseling with uh goes through these four promises.
00:31:49.839 --> 00:31:53.440
Number one, I will not think about this incident anymore.
00:31:53.680 --> 00:31:57.599
Number two, I will not bring this incident up again and use it against you.
00:31:58.160 --> 00:32:01.440
Number three, I will not talk to others about this incident.
00:32:01.839 --> 00:32:06.079
And number four, I will not allow this incident to hinder our relationship.
00:32:06.400 --> 00:32:09.440
When I say I forgive you, once again, I'm not gonna think about it anymore.
00:32:09.519 --> 00:32:10.559
I'm not gonna dwell on it.
00:32:10.640 --> 00:32:13.119
I may not forget it, but I'm not gonna dwell on it.
00:32:13.279 --> 00:32:16.000
I'm not gonna bring this up and use it against you in a future argument.
00:32:16.319 --> 00:32:17.359
It's been done with.
00:32:17.599 --> 00:32:23.119
I will not talk to other people about this, and I will not allow this to come between us.
00:32:23.599 --> 00:32:25.519
That is biblical forgiveness.
00:32:25.680 --> 00:32:31.680
And if you and I will not offer that to other people, it will hinder our prayer to God.
00:32:32.880 --> 00:32:34.319
So I'm gonna sum it up.
00:32:34.640 --> 00:32:37.279
Very simple sentence to sum this whole thing up.
00:32:37.599 --> 00:32:39.680
Jesus is getting real with you.
00:32:40.480 --> 00:32:42.400
Will you get real with him?
00:32:45.039 --> 00:32:47.119
Jesus is getting real with you.
00:32:48.400 --> 00:32:50.000
Will you get real with him?
00:32:52.240 --> 00:33:01.839
Whatever is happening in your life right now, and everybody in this room has at least something happening that you wish was not happening, something that you wish in your own power you could change.
00:33:02.000 --> 00:33:04.640
That's true of every soul in this room.
00:33:04.880 --> 00:33:10.720
And God may change it, and he may not, but he's not surprised by it.
00:33:11.119 --> 00:33:16.960
He's not surprised, he's not worried, he's working through this issue.
00:33:17.200 --> 00:33:21.440
And he's calling you to those two words I mentioned at the beginning of the message.
00:33:21.759 --> 00:33:24.720
Trust me and depend on me.
00:33:25.279 --> 00:33:32.160
And if you trust him and you depend on him, you are going to become a person of daily prayer.
00:33:32.559 --> 00:33:37.200
And it doesn't have to be fancy, it has to be genuine.
00:33:37.599 --> 00:33:40.079
You pray as you can, not as you can't.
00:33:40.319 --> 00:33:43.440
You talk to him as God has made you to talk to him.
00:33:44.000 --> 00:33:46.240
And you talk to him about everything.
00:33:46.480 --> 00:33:48.720
Now, there are plenty of prayers that I pray.
00:33:49.039 --> 00:33:50.400
I say this a lot lately in prayer.
00:33:50.559 --> 00:33:52.559
Lord, I'm gonna ask for big prayers.
00:33:52.799 --> 00:33:55.920
Let it never be said that I have not, because I've asked not.
00:33:56.000 --> 00:33:58.559
I'm gonna ask for everything I can think of.
00:33:58.880 --> 00:34:06.559
But if you don't answer the way that I think or when I think, I'm gonna look at my own life and I'm gonna say, Am I living in unconfessed sin?
00:34:07.440 --> 00:34:10.480
Am I living in a rebellious lifestyle?
00:34:10.800 --> 00:34:12.719
Have I not forgiven other people?
00:34:13.119 --> 00:34:15.599
Do I trust and believe that he can do it?
00:34:15.920 --> 00:34:19.840
And am I willing to wait if it's a long time before he answers this prayer?
00:34:20.000 --> 00:34:24.880
And am I willing to trust that if he says no, he's saying, My grace is sufficient.
00:34:25.119 --> 00:34:28.400
I'm not gonna take away the thorn, I'm gonna strengthen you in it.
00:34:28.880 --> 00:34:31.039
That's what he's doing in our lives.
00:34:31.760 --> 00:34:33.519
That's where he's telling us to get real.
00:34:33.599 --> 00:34:40.159
So my prayer is this wherever you're at in your prayer life with God, take the next step today.
00:34:41.440 --> 00:34:48.880
Every significant spiritual change that happens in life, it happens in small, simple, gracious steps.
00:34:49.679 --> 00:34:52.639
If you don't pray at all, this is a guilt-free zone.
00:34:52.800 --> 00:34:55.039
Prayer isn't is incredibly difficult.
00:34:55.199 --> 00:34:57.599
It's a supernatural thing, it doesn't come natural.
00:34:57.920 --> 00:35:03.760
So if you're someone that hasn't prayed, what if for the next seven days you commit to five minutes?
00:35:04.159 --> 00:35:23.039
And in those five minutes, offer the desires of your heart, talk to him about your struggles, talk to him about the things that you desire, confess sin if God brings it to your mind, turn away from things that don't honor him, and just walk with him one step at a time.
00:35:23.440 --> 00:35:26.639
Take the next step of your prayer life seriously.
00:35:26.800 --> 00:35:31.199
If you're in this room and you've had a vibrant prayer life, what's the next step for you?
00:35:31.440 --> 00:35:33.679
Maybe your prayer should be bigger.
00:35:35.280 --> 00:35:45.039
I never want to get to heaven and God say, Here are all the blessings that I withheld because you simply did not ask or believe that I could do it.
00:35:45.360 --> 00:35:47.519
My God can move mountains.
00:35:47.679 --> 00:35:52.880
So maybe for some of you, we got to start praying mountain-moving prayers.
00:35:54.480 --> 00:35:59.679
But it also is still gonna happen one day at a time, one prayer at a time.
00:36:00.000 --> 00:36:07.519
You know, for me this year I started taking three by five index cards, and on every side of the card is a different prayer list.
00:36:07.679 --> 00:36:15.440
One of them is intercessions for really important issues, one of them are personal petitions for things that I need, and then I have one finance card.
00:36:15.679 --> 00:36:25.440
And I took this three by five card, and on one side is every financial need I have this year, and I drew a line down the middle, and on the right side I fill out when he meets that need.
00:36:25.599 --> 00:36:26.960
You know how I learned this from?
00:36:27.119 --> 00:36:29.280
Someone you may have heard of, named Michael Guido.
00:36:29.519 --> 00:36:34.079
Now, he didn't do it on a three by five card, he had a huge prayer board inside his office.
00:36:34.239 --> 00:36:35.840
But I've been doing this for months.
00:36:35.920 --> 00:36:37.199
And guess what I have found out?
00:36:37.360 --> 00:36:38.960
God is very creative.
00:36:39.519 --> 00:36:42.000
He answers every prayer differently.
00:36:42.639 --> 00:36:45.840
Occasionally, he'll give me exactly what I'm praying for.
00:36:46.400 --> 00:36:53.519
Sometimes when a need is coming up, instead of giving me the need, he'll give me more work, which provides more income, which I can meet the need.
00:36:53.599 --> 00:37:04.239
I get a phone call and I get a project where I do freelance writing, or I teach a class at the Guidos, or broadcast a few games, or do something on the side and make a few extra dollars, and that money goes towards the need I have.
00:37:04.400 --> 00:37:06.719
But you know what he's been doing most of the time?
00:37:07.280 --> 00:37:15.280
As I've been praying for new things because my old things are wearing out, he makes those old worn-out things last a little bit longer.
00:37:16.079 --> 00:37:19.519
His grace is sufficient.
00:37:19.920 --> 00:37:21.679
You don't believe his grace is sufficient?
00:37:21.760 --> 00:37:23.840
I'll let you look at my cell phone when we close out.
00:37:23.920 --> 00:37:26.000
I've had it for 12 years.
00:37:26.400 --> 00:37:29.199
How many other people in this room had a cell phone for 12 years?
00:37:29.360 --> 00:37:31.760
You don't believe our God is a mountain-moving God?
00:37:32.000 --> 00:37:34.000
Come check out my iPhone 8.
00:37:34.239 --> 00:37:37.840
Still has the button on the bottom, still running smooth.
00:37:38.639 --> 00:37:43.840
God may choose to give us new things, or he may take the things we have and make them last longer than we can every dare dream.
00:37:44.239 --> 00:37:49.519
Either way, we are called to pray because God is calling us to get real.
00:37:50.079 --> 00:37:51.599
So that's the invitation.
00:37:51.840 --> 00:37:55.599
As we enter into this time, how is God speaking to you?
00:37:55.760 --> 00:37:58.480
What are some areas that you're not taking him seriously?
00:37:58.719 --> 00:38:01.840
What are some areas that you haven't been praying about for a long time?
00:38:02.239 --> 00:38:04.159
And God's saying, let's get real.
00:38:04.480 --> 00:38:06.239
Tell me what's on your heart.
00:38:06.480 --> 00:38:13.599
As we enter into this invitation, you pray and you share your heart with him wherever you're at, and know that he is good and he will listen.
00:38:13.840 --> 00:38:17.920
And he will help you take that next step, that small, simple, gracious step of faith.
00:38:18.400 --> 00:38:19.360
Let's pray.
00:38:24.079 --> 00:38:29.840
Lord, right now, right now, I commend to you every soul in this room.
00:38:30.239 --> 00:38:31.440
They're your children.
00:38:31.599 --> 00:38:37.039
You love them, you know them, you know every hair on their head, you know every ache in their soul.
00:38:37.280 --> 00:38:41.519
And you just want them to pray, you want them to walk with you, you want them to grow in trusting you.
00:38:41.760 --> 00:38:48.239
You don't always do what we want, but you will always do what we need, and you'll tell us when we need to respond more faithfully.
00:38:49.039 --> 00:38:53.440
So, Lord, I pray that you would do it only you can do right now as we enter into this time of imitation.
00:38:53.599 --> 00:38:55.039
Speak to our hearts.
00:38:55.920 --> 00:38:57.360
Speak to our hearts.
00:38:58.880 --> 00:39:01.679
How can we get real in areas that maybe we haven't been?
00:39:02.639 --> 00:39:05.519
Speak now, Lord, for your servants are listening in Jesus' name.
00:00:00.400 --> 00:00:03.120
Well, Cedar Street Baptist Church, good morning.
00:00:03.520 --> 00:00:06.000
It's so good to be in God's house with God's people.
00:00:06.160 --> 00:00:09.439
I love you so very much, and it's my joy to be with each of you.
00:00:09.679 --> 00:00:12.080
Gosh, I can't believe how fast the calendar is turning.
00:00:12.160 --> 00:00:15.199
We are now in the month of October, like it or not.
00:00:15.599 --> 00:00:22.160
And we are in a series, for those of you visiting, we're in the Gospel of Mark, something I like to do in one calendar year.
00:00:22.480 --> 00:00:28.879
With God's help, I preach through an Old Testament book, a New Testament book, a topic, a doctrine, and then a portion of a gospel.
00:00:28.960 --> 00:00:36.640
We started in 2016 just going verse by verse through every word, and we're all the way up to the middle of chapter 11 now.
00:00:36.799 --> 00:00:40.560
We try to do this every fall for a couple chapters and then we switch to something different.
00:00:40.719 --> 00:00:42.640
But we're in a series of the Gospel of Mark.
00:00:42.719 --> 00:00:44.320
It's called Jesus Is.
00:00:44.799 --> 00:00:51.759
And I want to say, if you're new to the Bible, anytime you read the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John, there's so many things happening.
00:00:51.840 --> 00:00:54.560
There's all these supernatural miracles taking place.
00:00:54.880 --> 00:01:02.240
But we have to understand that the main theme of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John is Jesus is saying, I am the Son of God.
00:01:02.399 --> 00:01:16.719
He demonstrates that he's the Son of God through his power and his authority over nature and demons and religious traditions and blindness and deafness and paralysis and sickness, curses, death, and finally eternal salvation itself.
00:01:16.879 --> 00:01:20.959
Every time we see something that Jesus is doing, he is saying, I am.
00:01:21.200 --> 00:01:25.280
Therefore, our sermon series is entitled, Jesus Is.
00:01:26.319 --> 00:01:32.000
Now, as we turn to Mark 11, we're going to be in chapter 11, verses 20 through 25.
00:01:32.079 --> 00:01:35.120
And the title of our message here is really simple but not easy.
00:01:35.200 --> 00:01:36.400
It's Get Real.
00:01:37.200 --> 00:01:37.840
Get real.
00:01:38.239 --> 00:01:41.120
Jesus is going to get real with us in this passage.
00:01:41.599 --> 00:01:45.519
And we have to recognize and respond if we're going to get real with him.
00:01:46.159 --> 00:01:48.079
Now I want to begin by sharing a story.
00:01:48.239 --> 00:01:52.079
Sometimes the most powerful spiritual lessons can come from physical objects.
00:01:52.239 --> 00:01:55.200
We're going to see that here with the withered fig tree.
00:01:55.920 --> 00:02:01.840
But years ago, one of the best illustrations I ever heard from my pastor and mentor at seminary, Dr.
00:02:01.920 --> 00:02:06.719
Steve Tillis, I'm amazed that his church did not kill him for doing this.
00:02:07.120 --> 00:02:10.000
So I'm not doing this, I'm just sharing what he did.
00:02:11.039 --> 00:02:18.560
But we were at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Raleigh, North Carolina, and in the back of the church was this big, beautiful oak tree.
00:02:18.800 --> 00:02:24.400
It was enormous, and it covered a good portion of the backyard, a lot of shade.
00:02:24.479 --> 00:02:28.319
Every year we had homecoming out there, and they would put the tables out right there in the backyard.
00:02:28.400 --> 00:02:29.199
It's just beautiful.
00:02:29.360 --> 00:02:32.800
It was so beautiful that oak tree was a part of their church logo.
00:02:33.199 --> 00:02:38.719
Well, he gets up there one Sunday and he says, Church, I want to share bad news with you.
00:02:38.879 --> 00:02:44.879
I talked to a tree surgeon, and apparently there's a disease in the tree and it's rotting, and we're going to have to remove the tree.
00:02:45.199 --> 00:02:48.719
And when he said that, there was a collective gasp.
00:02:57.039 --> 00:03:01.680
And he waited about five seconds and he said, Now, now, church, what I what I just did was I lied to you.
00:03:02.080 --> 00:03:04.240
Your pastor just lied to you in church.
00:03:04.479 --> 00:03:07.439
He said, There is no nothing wrong with the tree, there is no tree surge.
00:03:07.520 --> 00:03:14.400
And he said, But we have gasped that much over a tree that we were going to lose.
00:03:14.719 --> 00:03:18.000
How often do we gasp for souls that are lost?
00:03:18.319 --> 00:03:24.240
And then he pointed and said, Raleigh, North Carolina has many lost souls, and we need to reach the loss for Christ.
00:03:24.400 --> 00:03:26.400
I will never forget the day that he did that.
00:03:26.560 --> 00:03:28.800
And you say, Well, that's Raleigh, North Carolina.
00:03:28.879 --> 00:03:31.280
That would never happen in Meadow, Georgia.
00:03:31.759 --> 00:03:40.960
But I've been told, I was not around for it, but I was told in the early 80s when this sanctuary was built, we lost church members that got upset over certain truths getting cut down.
00:03:41.680 --> 00:03:43.120
Let me just say this.
00:03:44.080 --> 00:03:51.520
It is good and it is right to take care of creation and enjoy all that God has made, but a human soul is sacred.
00:03:52.159 --> 00:03:54.080
Absolutely sacred.
00:03:55.280 --> 00:03:59.360
And that's what the two ladies talked about during our missions moment, Paige and Sherry.
00:03:59.439 --> 00:04:03.280
They're dedicating their lives to preserving the sanctity of human life.
00:04:03.439 --> 00:04:04.400
It's sacred.
00:04:04.639 --> 00:04:17.279
And we care about a lot of things, but Jesus is the master of taking these worldly, earthly material or object things that we care so much about and saying, no, no, no, I'm showing this to you so that you can see what's really important.
00:04:17.439 --> 00:04:19.519
And that's what's happening in the human soul.
00:04:19.600 --> 00:04:23.040
And he's going to do it today through a withered fig tree.
00:04:23.279 --> 00:04:27.839
He's going to do it today through this tree that a couple of weeks ago he cursed.
00:04:28.079 --> 00:04:34.720
Now, a couple of weeks ago, when he approached this fig tree, he cursed it for not bearing fruit, even though it had green leaves.
00:04:34.879 --> 00:04:37.680
He was dealing with outward hypocrisy.
00:04:38.000 --> 00:04:41.519
But last week he goes into the temple of God and flips over the tables.
00:04:41.680 --> 00:04:44.720
Last week he was dealing with inward corruption.
00:04:44.959 --> 00:04:57.439
Well, today he's going to re-examine this tree that he cursed a short while ago, and he's talking today about the cause and effect of the decisions we make in our spiritual life.
00:04:57.759 --> 00:05:01.759
Every decision you make or don't make affects your soul.
00:05:01.839 --> 00:05:03.680
And he's going to be talking about that.
00:05:03.839 --> 00:05:07.199
And he's going to challenge us, as the title says, to get real.
00:05:07.519 --> 00:05:11.680
And as you hear him speaking to his disciples, he is speaking to each of us.
00:05:11.759 --> 00:05:12.800
So what's our big idea?
00:05:12.879 --> 00:05:14.000
I want to get right into it.
00:05:14.160 --> 00:05:16.000
In one sentence, here it is.
00:05:16.560 --> 00:05:25.600
Jesus uses the withered fig tree to challenge us to get real about our fruit, our faith, and our forgiveness.
00:05:25.839 --> 00:05:33.279
Again, Jesus uses the withered fig tree to challenge us to get real about our fruit, our faith, and our forgiveness.
00:05:33.360 --> 00:05:40.079
So if you want to know more about how Jesus is challenging us to get real, turn with me, if you would, to the Gospel of Mark.
00:05:40.319 --> 00:05:42.800
Again, if you're new to the Bible, it's in your New Testament.
00:05:42.959 --> 00:05:45.120
If it's after Matthew, it's before Luke.
00:05:45.279 --> 00:05:48.319
And if you don't have a Bible, grab the Pew Bible in front of you or beside you.
00:05:48.399 --> 00:05:51.199
We're on page 1007 in your pew Bible.
00:05:51.279 --> 00:06:05.040
And if you would stand at this time, out of the reverence to the reading of God's holy, infallible, inerrant, and fully sufficient word, we are in Mark chapter 11, and we're looking at verses 20 through 25.
00:06:05.279 --> 00:06:08.879
Hear God's word to us, starting in verse 20.
00:06:09.199 --> 00:06:14.800
It says, As they passed by in the morning, they saw the fig tree withered away to its roots.
00:06:14.879 --> 00:06:19.279
And Peter remembered and said to him, Rabbi, look, the fig tree that you cursed is withered.
00:06:19.519 --> 00:06:22.959
And Jesus answered them, Have faith in God.
00:06:23.600 --> 00:06:34.399
Truly I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, be taken up and thrown into the sea, and does not doubt it in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him.
00:06:34.639 --> 00:06:40.079
Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.
00:06:40.160 --> 00:06:51.120
And what whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father also, who is in heaven, may forgive you your trespasses.
00:06:51.439 --> 00:06:52.399
Let's pray.
00:06:56.639 --> 00:06:58.959
Gracious Heavenly Father, we love you.
00:07:00.319 --> 00:07:02.800
And we are gathered here today to worship you.
00:07:04.079 --> 00:07:09.519
And much like a withered fig tree, Lord, our eyes, our minds, our hearts, they're focused on worldly things.
00:07:10.399 --> 00:07:12.959
Not unimportant, just not what's most important.
00:07:13.920 --> 00:07:20.800
With all that's happening right now in our hearts and minds in this hour, clear the distractions.
00:07:21.120 --> 00:07:26.079
Help us, Lord, to focus in on how you're speaking to each one of us.
00:07:26.560 --> 00:07:34.399
How you're asking us to get real with you about our spiritual life and the things that we're doing, and maybe the things that we're not doing are the things that need to change.
00:07:35.120 --> 00:07:37.519
So, Lord, I pray that you would speak to each of us.
00:07:37.680 --> 00:07:41.040
I know that you will, but help us to be open to hear it.
00:07:41.360 --> 00:07:44.959
So be with us right now, I pray, in Jesus' name, and God's people said.
00:07:45.519 --> 00:07:46.160
Amen.
00:07:48.639 --> 00:07:57.439
Okay, now if you were not here last week, I try to give us key words so that if you're new to the Bible and you're new to the passage, you can kind of hang on to them.
00:07:57.680 --> 00:08:08.399
All right, so last week when I talked about the temple, I said there's two words that you have to understand or you will not understand why Jesus stormed the temple and flipped over the tables of the money changers.
00:08:08.560 --> 00:08:12.639
Last week the two words were worship and witness.
00:08:13.120 --> 00:08:29.439
We said the reason he was so angry about the temple of God being a marketplace was it was supposed to be a place of worship, but also the Gentiles, the non-believers, were supposed to be in that one spot, the courtyard of the Gentiles, to witness what true worship was all about.
00:08:29.600 --> 00:08:31.120
So that was last week.
00:08:31.360 --> 00:08:36.559
Well, today, as we look at this passage, verses 20 through 25, I'm gonna give you two more words.
00:08:37.039 --> 00:08:40.159
If you don't get these two words, you're gonna miss this passage.
00:08:40.480 --> 00:08:47.360
The two words I want you to hang on to from now to the end of the message is this trust and dependence.
00:08:47.840 --> 00:08:48.159
Okay?
00:08:48.799 --> 00:08:51.759
Trust and dependence.
00:08:51.919 --> 00:08:53.200
I love the word trust.
00:08:53.360 --> 00:09:03.360
You know, a lot of people say faith, and we're gonna use the word faith here in a minute, but trust to me is the best way to define the word faith, because you could say faith is just believing with your mind.
00:09:03.840 --> 00:09:08.960
All right, but even Satan believes with his mind that Jesus is Lord more than you do.
00:09:09.200 --> 00:09:11.440
But he doesn't trust him as Lord.
00:09:11.679 --> 00:09:15.360
No, when you begin to trust, that's where your faith really takes root.
00:09:15.519 --> 00:09:21.519
And when you trust in Jesus, you begin to depend on him for everything in your life.
00:09:21.679 --> 00:09:26.720
That's a hard sell for us, especially as prosperous 21st century Americans.
00:09:27.039 --> 00:09:36.960
We have lots of gifts and resources available to us every day, and we want to trust in something other than Christ.
00:09:37.360 --> 00:09:40.639
Because to trust in Jesus, we have to be like a child.
00:09:40.960 --> 00:09:42.720
And a lot of us want to do things on our own.
00:09:42.799 --> 00:09:44.240
We don't want to trust God.
00:09:44.960 --> 00:09:49.759
We want God to support us in trusting ourselves, and that's not God's agenda, that's our agenda.
00:09:50.080 --> 00:09:54.159
And Jesus is, oh, he specializes in exposing human hearts.
00:09:54.320 --> 00:09:57.360
Nobody can get to the heart better than Jesus.
00:09:57.600 --> 00:10:01.200
And he does it by pointing to a withered fig tree.
00:10:01.840 --> 00:10:09.360
Now, there's one thing that gets in the way of this trust and dependence, and it's a word I want you to think about throughout this message as well, and that's pride.
00:10:10.240 --> 00:10:12.480
Pride is what caused original sin.
00:10:12.960 --> 00:10:22.960
Pride is when we reject Jesus and we want to be the Lord of our own life, and pride will keep us from trusting him and experiencing the grace that God wants to pour out in all of our lives.
00:10:23.360 --> 00:10:24.320
So let's look at this.
00:10:24.480 --> 00:10:25.759
Let's get right into it.
00:10:26.080 --> 00:10:31.519
I want to walk through this, and we're gonna get real about your fruit, your faith, and your forgiveness.
00:10:31.679 --> 00:10:33.919
So, number one, get real about your fruit.
00:10:34.159 --> 00:10:36.399
All right, verses 20 through 21.
00:10:36.639 --> 00:10:48.399
It says, As they passed by in the morning, they saw the fig tree withered away at its roots, and Peter remembered and said to him, Rabbi, look, the fig tree that you cursed has withered.
00:10:48.960 --> 00:10:51.200
Now, why was the tree withered?
00:10:51.279 --> 00:10:54.720
If you remember a couple weeks ago, and if you were not here, I'll just catch you up again.
00:10:54.879 --> 00:11:11.919
They're walking in Jerusalem, the final week of Jesus' life, and Jesus is hungry, and he goes to a fig tree, and even though it was not the season for figs, there were lots of green leaves giving out the symbol that it was bearing fruit, but it wasn't.
00:11:12.159 --> 00:11:21.840
So he goes to the tree, reaches for fruit, he does not find any, and then he curses the fig tree and says, You will never bear fruit again.
00:11:22.080 --> 00:11:26.720
And he did that as a symbol of the spiritual condition of Israel.
00:11:26.879 --> 00:11:35.600
He was coming to Jerusalem, the holy city, and he was wanting to see true worship from his covenant children, and they were not worshiping the one true God.
00:11:35.840 --> 00:11:37.759
Their hearts were far from God.
00:11:37.919 --> 00:11:46.080
And he's saying, just like this tree is claiming to bear fruit and it doesn't, you also are called to bear fruit and you're not.
00:11:46.559 --> 00:11:48.559
Now, what does he mean by fruit?
00:11:48.879 --> 00:11:58.799
Well, I made the argument, and I'll make it again here today, the fruit that he wants is intimate relationship, first with God and then with each other.
00:11:58.960 --> 00:12:03.279
We know this because he sums up the whole law by saying, Love God and love others.
00:12:03.440 --> 00:12:07.440
Now that sounds easy, but it's impossible without God's help.
00:12:07.759 --> 00:12:16.559
You were planted in the orchard of God to bear the fruit of intimate relationship, first with God and then with each other.
00:12:16.720 --> 00:12:23.840
So if you're living a life separated from God, you cannot bear fruit because you don't have the root.
00:12:24.559 --> 00:12:25.679
You're made for God.
00:12:25.840 --> 00:12:28.000
God's not here for us, we're here for Him.
00:12:28.240 --> 00:12:35.200
And He loves you and He desires to have true intimate relationship with each one of you in a different way.
00:12:35.519 --> 00:12:49.519
But if you're living your life without Him and you keep Him out at arm's length and you don't want Him to be in control of how the decisions you're making in your life, you keep Him at arm's length when you're living, well, God's gonna hand him you over to what you really want when you pass.
00:12:49.840 --> 00:12:52.240
I heard a pastor say this the other day and it was sobering.
00:12:52.480 --> 00:12:56.320
He says, eventually God gives people what they really want.
00:12:56.639 --> 00:13:00.399
If you don't want Jesus, he'll hand you over to what you really want.
00:13:00.480 --> 00:13:06.559
And if what you really want is not Jesus, you're gonna find out eventually it's gonna leave you dry and empty.
00:13:06.879 --> 00:13:10.399
You have a soul and a heart that was made for God alone.
00:13:11.440 --> 00:13:13.200
This is the fruit that he's looking for.
00:13:13.360 --> 00:13:18.080
And Peter goes back to the tree with the disciples, and Peter, of course, is obsessed about the tree.
00:13:18.240 --> 00:13:23.600
Jesus, look at the tree! Look at the tree, Lord, the tree that you cursed, it's withered.
00:13:24.159 --> 00:13:28.080
And Jesus immediately begins to talk about spiritual things.
00:13:28.240 --> 00:13:31.200
Now, before I look at our second point, I want to say this.
00:13:31.519 --> 00:13:42.720
Later on, when Jesus has all the disciples in the upper room, he talks about fruit and he talks about trees and he talks about the danger of being fruitless.
00:13:42.960 --> 00:13:51.039
In John 15, this famous passage about abiding in Jesus, in verses 1 through 2, he says, I am the true vine, and my father is the vine dresser.
00:13:51.200 --> 00:13:54.639
Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away.
00:13:54.960 --> 00:13:59.200
And every branch that does bear fruit he prunes that it may bear more fruit.
00:13:59.519 --> 00:14:02.320
Jesus is serious about spiritual fruit.
00:14:02.639 --> 00:14:08.159
When you die, you will be handed over to what you really want.
00:14:08.480 --> 00:14:16.960
If you don't want Jesus now, you're not going to want him in eternity, and hell will be a place of separation from him because you didn't want him while you were here.
00:14:17.840 --> 00:14:22.559
And it's not his will that any should perish, but all should come to a knowledge of the proof of the truth.
00:14:22.720 --> 00:14:25.600
Ezekiel says he takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked.
00:14:25.759 --> 00:14:31.600
He desires for every every person made in his image to come and know him and worship him and trust him.
00:14:32.240 --> 00:14:39.120
But if you reject him now and you take your final breath, he will hand you over to what it is that you really want.
00:14:39.279 --> 00:14:43.039
And so that's why right now he's saying, get real about your fruit.
00:14:43.200 --> 00:14:45.440
Get real about your relationship.
00:14:45.679 --> 00:14:48.399
Is Jesus the centerpiece of your life?
00:14:49.759 --> 00:14:51.360
Do you share your heart with him?
00:14:52.000 --> 00:14:55.039
Do you ask for his guidance as you're making decisions?
00:14:55.279 --> 00:15:00.559
Do you see that the way you're spending your time and your money and your energy as acts of worship to him?
00:15:00.960 --> 00:15:05.200
Do you recognize what he's doing in other people's lives and do you participate in that?
00:15:05.279 --> 00:15:07.039
Do you share what God's done in your life?
00:15:07.200 --> 00:15:09.360
This is the fruit that he's looking for.
00:15:10.080 --> 00:15:10.879
That's number one.
00:15:10.960 --> 00:15:12.000
Get real about your fruit.
00:15:12.159 --> 00:15:13.759
Well, all this is connected.
00:15:13.840 --> 00:15:17.120
As we talk about a relationship, we can't help but get past that word faith.
00:15:17.200 --> 00:15:19.279
So number two, get real about your faith.
00:15:19.600 --> 00:15:25.200
All right, verses 2 through 24, as Peter's saying, Look at the tree, Jesus says, No, look at me.
00:15:26.000 --> 00:15:26.320
All right?
00:15:26.480 --> 00:15:28.320
Jesus answered them, Have faith in God.
00:15:28.480 --> 00:15:39.120
Truly I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, be taken up and thrown into the sea, and does not doubt in his heart, but believes what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him.
00:15:39.279 --> 00:15:46.000
Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.
00:15:48.559 --> 00:15:50.559
Now let me take a deep breath.
00:15:51.360 --> 00:15:53.519
This is a challenging passage.
00:15:54.240 --> 00:15:58.879
And I want to do everything I can to be helpful to you as your pastor, your brother, and your friend.
00:15:59.279 --> 00:16:06.879
Unfortunately, this passage has been it has been ripped out of its context many times over the years.
00:16:07.279 --> 00:16:14.720
There's something in the 20th and 21st century known as the Word of Faith movement, and it's been very damaging to the body of Christ.
00:16:14.879 --> 00:16:19.840
The Word of Faith movement, using this passage, says, you can have whatever it is that you want.
00:16:20.000 --> 00:16:22.960
If you name it, you can claim it.
00:16:23.200 --> 00:16:26.639
And that is not what I would call true worship and trusting God.
00:16:26.799 --> 00:16:29.440
That's God, that's making God a magic genie.
00:16:29.519 --> 00:16:34.399
And you rub the bottle, whatever it is that you want, he will do it when you say, and he will do it how you say it.
00:16:34.559 --> 00:16:36.399
That's not how our God works.
00:16:36.720 --> 00:16:43.919
And the word of faith movement has it really has damaged a lot of true biblical Christian faith in this country.
00:16:44.799 --> 00:16:48.080
But at the same time, there's two extremes.
00:16:48.639 --> 00:16:53.120
The one extreme is I'm gonna name it and claim it I can have whatever I want.
00:16:53.440 --> 00:16:54.799
He's gonna do whatever I ask.
00:16:54.879 --> 00:16:57.679
If I ask it in prayer, and I believe that he'll do it, he'll do it.
00:16:57.840 --> 00:16:59.840
That's one extreme called the word of faith movement.
00:17:00.000 --> 00:17:03.440
The other extreme is even more dangerous, and that is we don't pray at all.
00:17:03.759 --> 00:17:05.680
We don't believe that God hears us.
00:17:05.920 --> 00:17:09.680
We don't believe that God can, and so we take matters into our own hands.
00:17:09.839 --> 00:17:15.039
I'd say for most of us, we're probably a lot more in danger of that than we are the word of faith movement.
00:17:15.200 --> 00:17:19.039
We simply don't go to God when we're in trouble.
00:17:19.279 --> 00:17:25.519
We double down on our own effort, our own strength, our own bootstraps, and I'm gonna get this done in my own effort.
00:17:25.599 --> 00:17:28.480
And if I have to work harder, I'm working harder, but I'm gonna do it my way.
00:17:28.640 --> 00:17:31.599
And we don't recognize that's not the way God made you.
00:17:32.319 --> 00:17:37.039
God made us to be fully dependent upon him every single day.
00:17:37.200 --> 00:17:39.599
The problem is he's given many of us gifts.
00:17:39.759 --> 00:17:45.920
Now they're from him, but those gifts were never so that we would depend on ourselves and not him, but that we would praise him.
00:17:46.240 --> 00:17:49.519
But no, we use those gifts to depend on ourselves.
00:17:49.759 --> 00:17:56.960
And so he's telling us right now to get real about our faith, to get real about our faith and to trust in him.
00:17:57.119 --> 00:18:02.799
And the way that you exercise that trust is daily dependent prayer.
00:18:03.200 --> 00:18:03.839
And guess what?
00:18:04.000 --> 00:18:05.839
Prayer's the hardest thing I know.
00:18:06.000 --> 00:18:11.200
I've been in ministry almost two decades, and I will tell you this: I've made baby steps in my prayer life.
00:18:11.440 --> 00:18:14.000
You want to find the strongest prayer warriors in your church?
00:18:14.160 --> 00:18:15.599
Don't look at the pulpit.
00:18:15.839 --> 00:18:17.440
Look at the gray hair.
00:18:17.920 --> 00:18:21.039
Look at the ones that have been walking with Jesus 50 and 60 years.
00:18:21.200 --> 00:18:27.039
They got where they are today because they learned how to walk in daily dependent prayer.
00:18:28.160 --> 00:18:32.720
Now, it says here that if you have this kind of daily dependent prayer, you can move mountains.
00:18:32.880 --> 00:18:34.160
What does he mean by that?
00:18:34.319 --> 00:18:41.440
Well, you have to understand in Jewish literature, the mountain, and again, they're in Jerusalem, which is known as Mount Zion.
00:18:41.599 --> 00:18:47.039
They're in a mountainous area, the mountain is known as something large and immovable.
00:18:47.680 --> 00:18:48.160
All right?
00:18:48.319 --> 00:18:58.000
He's talking about something in your life, whatever it is, that is so big and immovable, you simply cannot move it in your own strength.
00:18:58.319 --> 00:19:01.039
He's saying that's where prayer comes into play.
00:19:01.359 --> 00:19:04.319
Because our God is a mountain mover.
00:19:05.039 --> 00:19:07.839
We in our own power cannot move mountains.
00:19:07.920 --> 00:19:10.160
That's what mountains are there for, they're immovable.
00:19:10.400 --> 00:19:11.759
But God can do all things.
00:19:11.839 --> 00:19:18.000
And he is telling Peter, if you really want to grow, you have better learn to pray.
00:19:18.960 --> 00:19:26.400
Now, to make sure that we don't take this passage out of context, I want to do something today I haven't done in a long time.
00:19:27.200 --> 00:19:34.000
And I'm gonna go through it quickly right now, but if you have an interest in this, we're gonna be doing this for our Sunday night study tonight.
00:19:34.240 --> 00:19:40.000
Over the years, I have had many people come to me with tears in their eyes and they said, Bo, I don't understand.
00:19:40.079 --> 00:19:48.799
I I've been praying and I believe that God can do it, but I've not seen God respond to my prayers.
00:19:49.119 --> 00:19:50.400
What am I doing wrong?
00:19:50.559 --> 00:19:51.839
I've prayed that in my own life.
00:19:52.000 --> 00:19:57.359
Lord, I've been I've been I've been meditating on this, I've been petitioning you, I haven't seen any changes.
00:19:57.599 --> 00:19:58.960
Am I doing something wrong?
00:19:59.119 --> 00:20:01.440
Why have you not answered this prayer?
00:20:01.920 --> 00:20:10.799
And so to put it in its right context, because every single passage, if you just look at the passage and not what everything scripture says, you can rip it out of its context.
00:20:10.960 --> 00:20:14.640
I came up with something, and I have copies of it right here on this ledge.
00:20:14.720 --> 00:20:22.960
I have it in the vestibule, and I'm gonna go through this real fast, but we're gonna look at this together in detail tonight for those that want to come back for Sunday night study.
00:20:23.200 --> 00:20:28.160
According to the Bible, here's 10 reasons for unanswered prayer.
00:20:28.240 --> 00:20:34.240
Now, if you're a note taker, again, I got the whole sheet, so you're gonna get a hand cramped if you try to keep up with me because I got to go quick.
00:20:34.480 --> 00:20:39.440
But I just want to read the reason and the scripture, and then we're gonna talk about this more tonight.
00:20:39.599 --> 00:20:42.319
Why is it when you pray, you don't immediately see an answer?
00:20:42.480 --> 00:20:46.400
Well, number one, our prayers may go unanswered when we don't ask at all.
00:20:46.480 --> 00:20:48.400
That's the problem I talked about a few minutes ago.
00:20:48.640 --> 00:20:52.400
James 4, verse 2 says, you do not have because you do not ask.
00:20:52.640 --> 00:20:55.200
So the biggest problem is we don't pray enough.
00:20:55.519 --> 00:20:57.359
But maybe we are praying and we're not seeing it.
00:20:57.440 --> 00:21:02.079
And then number two, our prayers may go unanswered when we ask with wrong motives.
00:21:02.400 --> 00:21:08.799
James chapter 4, verse 3 says, You ask and do not receive because you ask wrongly to spend it on your own passions.
00:21:08.960 --> 00:21:11.039
Sometimes we don't want things to honor God.
00:21:11.119 --> 00:21:13.759
We just want things for our own selfish desires.
00:21:14.000 --> 00:21:18.480
Number three, our prayers may go unanswered when we ask without believing that God can.
00:21:18.960 --> 00:21:29.839
In Mark chapter 6, verses 5 through 6, it said, And he could not do mighty works there except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and healed them, and he marveled because of their unbelief.
00:21:30.079 --> 00:21:38.079
You have got to believe in the very fabric of your soul that our God is infinite in his power and he can do anything.
00:21:38.319 --> 00:21:43.440
And you and I need to learn to pray big prayers because we trust in a big God.
00:21:44.319 --> 00:21:48.880
Number five, our prayers may go unanswered when we ask with unconfessed sin.
00:21:49.440 --> 00:21:55.359
Maybe God wants to answer our prayer, but he says, You and I are going to deal with this first before I listen to anything else you have to say.
00:21:55.519 --> 00:22:04.079
In Psalm 66 18, David says this If I had cherished and Iniquity in my heart, the Lord would not have listened.
00:22:04.640 --> 00:22:06.559
You know this as a parent.
00:22:08.319 --> 00:22:18.720
You ask your child to do something and they don't do it, but then they ask you for a favor, they ask you for a gift or a blessing, and you say, I love you, but I'm not talking to you about this until you do what I asked you to do.
00:22:18.960 --> 00:22:21.839
That's just common parent-child relationship.
00:22:22.000 --> 00:22:27.680
There are things that God has told us to turn away from, and there's other things that God has told us to go towards.
00:22:27.839 --> 00:22:32.799
And if we won't listen to him, then we can't always expect that he's going to listen to us.
00:22:33.039 --> 00:22:36.079
He wants us to confess sin.
00:22:37.599 --> 00:22:40.000
All right, uh, I think I skipped over one.
00:22:40.240 --> 00:22:41.279
Uh yeah, number four.
00:22:41.599 --> 00:22:42.640
Forgive me for skipping over it.
00:22:42.720 --> 00:22:46.559
Uh, our prayers may go unanswered when number four, we ask outside of God's will.
00:22:46.720 --> 00:22:54.319
1 John 5.14 says, and this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.
00:22:54.559 --> 00:23:10.640
Now, I think you should pray about everything, but if you're praying for something completely against the will of God, if you're walking with God, he will give you conviction and understanding in time that what you're praying for is not his will, and he'll give you a desire to know what his will is.
00:23:11.519 --> 00:23:16.319
Like the great theologian Garth Brooks once said, I praise God for unanswered prayers.
00:23:16.480 --> 00:23:21.200
There's things we ask, and we have no idea how bad it would be if God actually gave it to us.
00:23:22.079 --> 00:23:23.680
That's why we trust God.
00:23:23.920 --> 00:23:26.319
All right, number six, I'm back on track now.
00:23:26.559 --> 00:23:30.240
Our prayers may go unanswered when we ask with an unrepentant lifestyle.
00:23:30.400 --> 00:23:35.599
Proverbs 15, 29 says, The Lord is far from the wicked, but he hears the prayer of the righteous.
00:23:35.759 --> 00:23:41.680
If you're living a lifestyle that is contrary to the word of God, I'm not saying he doesn't love you.
00:23:41.839 --> 00:23:47.680
I'm saying that what he the next prayer he's waiting for is, I repent and I confess.
00:23:48.240 --> 00:23:50.799
I was wrong and I turn away from this lifestyle.
00:23:51.039 --> 00:23:56.319
If you're walking in that kind of life, he's waiting for a prayer of repentance before anything else.
00:23:56.559 --> 00:24:01.119
All right, number seven, our prayers may go unanswered when we ask with unresolved conflict.
00:24:01.200 --> 00:24:02.960
This one is big, especially for husbands.
00:24:03.119 --> 00:24:09.039
It says in 1 Peter chapter 3, verse 7, likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way.
00:24:09.200 --> 00:24:13.279
And at the end it says, so that your prayers may not be hindered.
00:24:13.680 --> 00:24:19.200
Maybe you're asking for these big things, and God's saying, you know what, your marriage is a lot more important than what you're asking for.
00:24:19.279 --> 00:24:25.119
Why don't you focus on resolving the issues on the home front, and then I'll listen to some of these other things you're praying for.
00:24:26.000 --> 00:24:27.359
Number eight, this is a big one.
00:24:27.440 --> 00:24:30.960
Our prayers may go unanswered when we ask, but God says, wait.
00:24:31.279 --> 00:24:33.039
He may not be saying no.
00:24:33.839 --> 00:24:35.759
He may be saying, not yet.
00:24:36.079 --> 00:24:37.279
He may be saying, wait on me.
00:24:37.440 --> 00:24:41.359
Psalm 27, 14 says, wait for the Lord, be strong, and let your heart take courage.
00:24:41.519 --> 00:24:42.880
Wait for the Lord.
00:24:43.519 --> 00:24:44.400
Two more.
00:24:44.799 --> 00:24:48.720
Our prayers may go unanswered when number nine, we ask, but God's grace is sufficient.
00:24:48.880 --> 00:24:50.160
This is a huge one.
00:24:50.400 --> 00:24:51.839
Paul learned this the hard way.
00:24:52.000 --> 00:24:55.039
2 Corinthians chapter 12, verses 8 through 9.
00:24:55.279 --> 00:25:02.559
Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, Paul's saying about a thorn in his flesh, but it it that it should leave me.
00:25:02.640 --> 00:25:08.160
But he said to me, My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.
00:25:08.319 --> 00:25:14.000
Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
00:25:14.640 --> 00:25:16.559
This verse kills the word of faith movement.
00:25:16.720 --> 00:25:21.519
The word of faith says, if you have enough faith and you name it and you claim it, God will do whatever you want.
00:25:21.680 --> 00:25:22.319
Well, guess what?
00:25:22.400 --> 00:25:24.880
You're saying you have more faith than the Apostle Paul.
00:25:25.119 --> 00:25:27.599
Because Paul had a thorn in his flesh, and we don't know what it is.
00:25:27.680 --> 00:25:30.240
Some scholars think it was declining eyesight.
00:25:30.559 --> 00:25:36.160
Some scholars think it was the false teachers and ethicists that were attacking his ministry.
00:25:36.319 --> 00:25:37.440
Whatever it is, we don't know.
00:25:37.599 --> 00:25:40.319
We just know he prayed three times for God to take it away.
00:25:40.400 --> 00:25:44.000
And God says, I'm not going to remove this trouble from your life.
00:25:44.160 --> 00:25:48.160
I'm going to, I'm doing too much good work by allowing it to remain in your life.
00:25:48.319 --> 00:25:56.240
Your faith is growing, and your trust and dependence on me will grow more if I leave the thorn than if I take it away.
00:25:57.759 --> 00:26:01.920
And then number 10, and this goes into our final passage here in Mark 11.
00:26:02.079 --> 00:26:04.960
Our prayers may go unanswered if we ask without forgiving others.
00:26:05.119 --> 00:26:09.519
Forgiveness is a big deal in the family of God.
00:26:09.839 --> 00:26:12.319
Matthew chapter 6, verses 14 through 15.
00:26:12.480 --> 00:26:17.519
If you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly father will also forgive you.
00:26:17.680 --> 00:26:23.599
But if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your father forgive your trespasses.
00:26:24.079 --> 00:26:38.880
If you refuse to forgive somebody, I don't care what name they called you, I don't care what they said about your kids, I don't care what they did to your business, I don't care what they did to your property, I don't care what it is, it could be horrible.
00:26:39.119 --> 00:26:40.480
And a lot of times it can be.
00:26:40.559 --> 00:26:42.559
We can do really horrible things to each other.
00:26:42.799 --> 00:26:54.240
If you withhold forgiveness for anybody for any reason whatsoever, you simply don't understand how wretched your own sin is and how God forgave you.
00:26:54.640 --> 00:26:58.960
You don't understand your salvation if you withhold forgiveness for people no matter what they've done to you.
00:26:59.119 --> 00:27:05.599
And if you withhold forgiveness, you're not walking in grace, and God may not be inclined to hear your prayer.
00:27:05.759 --> 00:27:09.519
Maybe right now you're in this place and you are holding a grudge.
00:27:09.839 --> 00:27:12.480
Somebody has wounded you deeply.
00:27:12.799 --> 00:27:17.920
And God's saying, I love you and I want to heal that, but I can't listen to all these other prayers right now.
00:27:18.240 --> 00:27:19.440
I want to deal with what's important.
00:27:19.599 --> 00:27:21.200
You need to forgive this person.
00:27:22.079 --> 00:27:23.839
You need to let it go.
00:27:25.279 --> 00:27:28.720
And I want to talk more about that here because that leads us right into our third point.
00:27:28.880 --> 00:27:31.359
Number three, get real about your forgiveness.
00:27:31.599 --> 00:27:32.799
Verse 25.
00:27:33.119 --> 00:27:43.599
And whenever you stand praying, forgive if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.
00:27:44.000 --> 00:27:49.200
Again, if you and I cannot forgive others, we don't recognize how much God had to forgive us.
00:27:49.519 --> 00:27:52.319
You know, here's the thing.
00:27:52.559 --> 00:27:56.480
We're just not offended about our own sin the way we are about other people's.
00:27:56.640 --> 00:28:00.160
I experienced something a few weeks ago, and I don't think this is uncommon.
00:28:00.240 --> 00:28:05.599
I think this is an everyday thing, but it made me so uncomfortable, my blood started rising.
00:28:06.400 --> 00:28:18.720
I went to visit uh a family close to this community that I had not seen in a long time, and I was sitting there having lunch with them, and WTOC was on the news.
00:28:19.759 --> 00:28:22.880
Uh it was like the 12 o'clock, you know, news or whatever.
00:28:23.039 --> 00:28:24.160
I don't know what the stories were.
00:28:24.240 --> 00:28:32.960
They had it muted, we're sitting there eating, but as I was sitting there with the couple, the the wife pointed at the screen and said, You believe what happened in Savannah yesterday?
00:28:33.279 --> 00:28:33.920
And I said, No.
00:28:34.079 --> 00:28:36.000
She went, makes me sick.
00:28:36.319 --> 00:28:38.160
Just makes me sick.
00:28:38.799 --> 00:28:44.079
And you know, there was just such a tone of self-righteousness in what she said.
00:28:44.640 --> 00:28:48.240
I thought to myself, have you ever been that sickened over your own sin?
00:28:49.039 --> 00:28:51.839
Yes, what we watch on the news is sickening.
00:28:52.079 --> 00:28:53.359
Murder is sickening.
00:28:53.519 --> 00:28:54.559
Guess what Jesus said?
00:28:54.720 --> 00:29:00.319
If you have anger in your heart for another person, you have the heart of a murderer.
00:29:01.200 --> 00:29:04.400
Jesus really is being serious when he says these things.
00:29:04.640 --> 00:29:13.039
You and I, evidence that you're walking with God is you'll never be more offended by the world than you are by your own sin.
00:29:13.519 --> 00:29:16.640
And some of us are way too impressed with our own selves.
00:29:16.799 --> 00:29:33.680
00:29:33.839 --> 00:29:37.440
And trust me when I say this, it's it's excruciating sometimes.
00:29:37.599 --> 00:29:43.200
If you tell God, God, humble me, he says, I've been, that's a prayer I've been waiting to answer.
00:29:43.440 --> 00:29:45.920
And he will do it because he loves us.
00:29:46.559 --> 00:29:56.000
And if you look in the scriptures, you'll find that when people are growing closer to God, it's not that they're sinning less, it's that they're more aware of their sin than they've ever been.
00:29:56.240 --> 00:30:01.599
If you don't believe me, listen to how people talk about their sin when they're in the presence of God.
00:30:02.079 --> 00:30:08.240
Job at the end of his life said, I despise myself and I put on sackcloth and ashes for questioning you.
00:30:08.400 --> 00:30:11.039
Peter said, Depart from me, for I'm an evil man.
00:30:11.279 --> 00:30:13.920
Paul says, I'm the chief of sinners.
00:30:14.240 --> 00:30:20.240
I mean, listen to the, you know, Isaiah, when he's in the presence of God, he says, Woe is me, a man of unclean lips.
00:30:20.880 --> 00:30:23.519
They're not just being cute or poetic.
00:30:23.759 --> 00:30:26.960
They recognize his holiness and how far they fall short.
00:30:27.039 --> 00:30:32.079
And if you recognize his holiness, you'll recognize you don't have enough time to point fingers at other people.
00:30:32.240 --> 00:30:35.519
You got plenty on your plate to keep you busy until Jesus comes back.
00:30:35.759 --> 00:30:37.039
The same is true of me.
00:30:37.200 --> 00:30:42.079
There's so much arrogance and pride in my heart that God wants to deal with.
00:30:42.799 --> 00:30:46.960
And this is where Jesus is saying to Peter and to us, get real.
00:30:47.519 --> 00:30:54.880
If you want Jesus to get real with you, start forgiving other people that don't deserve it because you didn't deserve it when he forgave you.
00:30:55.200 --> 00:30:56.559
Start forgiving other people.
00:30:56.720 --> 00:30:58.880
Now let me say this before we pray out.
00:30:59.680 --> 00:31:02.400
How do I know that I've truly forgiven somebody?
00:31:02.720 --> 00:31:07.519
There's things that forgiveness is, and there's things that forgiveness is not.
00:31:08.960 --> 00:31:09.599
All right?
00:31:09.839 --> 00:31:11.920
Don't worry, brother, I forgive you.
00:31:14.480 --> 00:31:21.440
Forgiveness is not a feeling, forgiveness is not forgetting, and forgiveness is not excusing.
00:31:21.759 --> 00:31:24.720
There's things that people have done to you that you'll never forget.
00:31:25.200 --> 00:31:27.359
It'd be impossible to say that you could forget it.
00:31:27.440 --> 00:31:33.119
And it's not about feeling like I want to forgive, and it's not about saying it was okay, that it was not okay what they did.
00:31:33.279 --> 00:31:36.000
Here's what forgiveness is, according to Ken Sandy.
00:31:36.079 --> 00:31:37.680
By the way, great book if you've never read it.
00:31:37.759 --> 00:31:39.200
It's called The Peacemaker.
00:31:39.359 --> 00:31:42.000
It's the best book on biblical forgiveness I've ever read.
00:31:42.160 --> 00:31:43.599
He says there's four promises.
00:31:43.759 --> 00:31:49.119
Every couple I do premarital counseling with uh goes through these four promises.
00:31:49.839 --> 00:31:53.440
Number one, I will not think about this incident anymore.
00:31:53.680 --> 00:31:57.599
Number two, I will not bring this incident up again and use it against you.
00:31:58.160 --> 00:32:01.440
Number three, I will not talk to others about this incident.
00:32:01.839 --> 00:32:06.079
And number four, I will not allow this incident to hinder our relationship.
00:32:06.400 --> 00:32:09.440
When I say I forgive you, once again, I'm not gonna think about it anymore.
00:32:09.519 --> 00:32:10.559
I'm not gonna dwell on it.
00:32:10.640 --> 00:32:13.119
I may not forget it, but I'm not gonna dwell on it.
00:32:13.279 --> 00:32:16.000
I'm not gonna bring this up and use it against you in a future argument.
00:32:16.319 --> 00:32:17.359
It's been done with.
00:32:17.599 --> 00:32:23.119
I will not talk to other people about this, and I will not allow this to come between us.
00:32:23.599 --> 00:32:25.519
That is biblical forgiveness.
00:32:25.680 --> 00:32:31.680
And if you and I will not offer that to other people, it will hinder our prayer to God.
00:32:32.880 --> 00:32:34.319
So I'm gonna sum it up.
00:32:34.640 --> 00:32:37.279
Very simple sentence to sum this whole thing up.
00:32:37.599 --> 00:32:39.680
Jesus is getting real with you.
00:32:40.480 --> 00:32:42.400
Will you get real with him?
00:32:45.039 --> 00:32:47.119
Jesus is getting real with you.
00:32:48.400 --> 00:32:50.000
Will you get real with him?
00:32:52.240 --> 00:33:01.839
Whatever is happening in your life right now, and everybody in this room has at least something happening that you wish was not happening, something that you wish in your own power you could change.
00:33:02.000 --> 00:33:04.640
That's true of every soul in this room.
00:33:04.880 --> 00:33:10.720
And God may change it, and he may not, but he's not surprised by it.
00:33:11.119 --> 00:33:16.960
He's not surprised, he's not worried, he's working through this issue.
00:33:17.200 --> 00:33:21.440
And he's calling you to those two words I mentioned at the beginning of the message.
00:33:21.759 --> 00:33:24.720
Trust me and depend on me.
00:33:25.279 --> 00:33:32.160
And if you trust him and you depend on him, you are going to become a person of daily prayer.
00:33:32.559 --> 00:33:37.200
And it doesn't have to be fancy, it has to be genuine.
00:33:37.599 --> 00:33:40.079
You pray as you can, not as you can't.
00:33:40.319 --> 00:33:43.440
You talk to him as God has made you to talk to him.
00:33:44.000 --> 00:33:46.240
And you talk to him about everything.
00:33:46.480 --> 00:33:48.720
Now, there are plenty of prayers that I pray.
00:33:49.039 --> 00:33:50.400
I say this a lot lately in prayer.
00:33:50.559 --> 00:33:52.559
Lord, I'm gonna ask for big prayers.
00:33:52.799 --> 00:33:55.920
Let it never be said that I have not, because I've asked not.
00:33:56.000 --> 00:33:58.559
I'm gonna ask for everything I can think of.
00:33:58.880 --> 00:34:06.559
But if you don't answer the way that I think or when I think, I'm gonna look at my own life and I'm gonna say, Am I living in unconfessed sin?
00:34:07.440 --> 00:34:10.480
Am I living in a rebellious lifestyle?
00:34:10.800 --> 00:34:12.719
Have I not forgiven other people?
00:34:13.119 --> 00:34:15.599
Do I trust and believe that he can do it?
00:34:15.920 --> 00:34:19.840
And am I willing to wait if it's a long time before he answers this prayer?
00:34:20.000 --> 00:34:24.880
And am I willing to trust that if he says no, he's saying, My grace is sufficient.
00:34:25.119 --> 00:34:28.400
I'm not gonna take away the thorn, I'm gonna strengthen you in it.
00:34:28.880 --> 00:34:31.039
That's what he's doing in our lives.
00:34:31.760 --> 00:34:33.519
That's where he's telling us to get real.
00:34:33.599 --> 00:34:40.159
So my prayer is this wherever you're at in your prayer life with God, take the next step today.
00:34:41.440 --> 00:34:48.880
Every significant spiritual change that happens in life, it happens in small, simple, gracious steps.
00:34:49.679 --> 00:34:52.639
If you don't pray at all, this is a guilt-free zone.
00:34:52.800 --> 00:34:55.039
Prayer isn't is incredibly difficult.
00:34:55.199 --> 00:34:57.599
It's a supernatural thing, it doesn't come natural.
00:34:57.920 --> 00:35:03.760
So if you're someone that hasn't prayed, what if for the next seven days you commit to five minutes?
00:35:04.159 --> 00:35:23.039
And in those five minutes, offer the desires of your heart, talk to him about your struggles, talk to him about the things that you desire, confess sin if God brings it to your mind, turn away from things that don't honor him, and just walk with him one step at a time.
00:35:23.440 --> 00:35:26.639
Take the next step of your prayer life seriously.
00:35:26.800 --> 00:35:31.199
If you're in this room and you've had a vibrant prayer life, what's the next step for you?
00:35:31.440 --> 00:35:33.679
Maybe your prayer should be bigger.
00:35:35.280 --> 00:35:45.039
I never want to get to heaven and God say, Here are all the blessings that I withheld because you simply did not ask or believe that I could do it.
00:35:45.360 --> 00:35:47.519
My God can move mountains.
00:35:47.679 --> 00:35:52.880
So maybe for some of you, we got to start praying mountain-moving prayers.
00:35:54.480 --> 00:35:59.679
But it also is still gonna happen one day at a time, one prayer at a time.
00:36:00.000 --> 00:36:07.519
You know, for me this year I started taking three by five index cards, and on every side of the card is a different prayer list.
00:36:07.679 --> 00:36:15.440
One of them is intercessions for really important issues, one of them are personal petitions for things that I need, and then I have one finance card.
00:36:15.679 --> 00:36:25.440
And I took this three by five card, and on one side is every financial need I have this year, and I drew a line down the middle, and on the right side I fill out when he meets that need.
00:36:25.599 --> 00:36:26.960
You know how I learned this from?
00:36:27.119 --> 00:36:29.280
Someone you may have heard of, named Michael Guido.
00:36:29.519 --> 00:36:34.079
Now, he didn't do it on a three by five card, he had a huge prayer board inside his office.
00:36:34.239 --> 00:36:35.840
But I've been doing this for months.
00:36:35.920 --> 00:36:37.199
And guess what I have found out?
00:36:37.360 --> 00:36:38.960
God is very creative.
00:36:39.519 --> 00:36:42.000
He answers every prayer differently.
00:36:42.639 --> 00:36:45.840
Occasionally, he'll give me exactly what I'm praying for.
00:36:46.400 --> 00:36:53.519
Sometimes when a need is coming up, instead of giving me the need, he'll give me more work, which provides more income, which I can meet the need.
00:36:53.599 --> 00:37:04.239
I get a phone call and I get a project where I do freelance writing, or I teach a class at the Guidos, or broadcast a few games, or do something on the side and make a few extra dollars, and that money goes towards the need I have.
00:37:04.400 --> 00:37:06.719
But you know what he's been doing most of the time?
00:37:07.280 --> 00:37:15.280
As I've been praying for new things because my old things are wearing out, he makes those old worn-out things last a little bit longer.
00:37:16.079 --> 00:37:19.519
His grace is sufficient.
00:37:19.920 --> 00:37:21.679
You don't believe his grace is sufficient?
00:37:21.760 --> 00:37:23.840
I'll let you look at my cell phone when we close out.
00:37:23.920 --> 00:37:26.000
I've had it for 12 years.
00:37:26.400 --> 00:37:29.199
How many other people in this room had a cell phone for 12 years?
00:37:29.360 --> 00:37:31.760
You don't believe our God is a mountain-moving God?
00:37:32.000 --> 00:37:34.000
Come check out my iPhone 8.
00:37:34.239 --> 00:37:37.840
Still has the button on the bottom, still running smooth.
00:37:38.639 --> 00:37:43.840
God may choose to give us new things, or he may take the things we have and make them last longer than we can every dare dream.
00:37:44.239 --> 00:37:49.519
Either way, we are called to pray because God is calling us to get real.
00:37:50.079 --> 00:37:51.599
So that's the invitation.
00:37:51.840 --> 00:37:55.599
As we enter into this time, how is God speaking to you?
00:37:55.760 --> 00:37:58.480
What are some areas that you're not taking him seriously?
00:37:58.719 --> 00:38:01.840
What are some areas that you haven't been praying about for a long time?
00:38:02.239 --> 00:38:04.159
And God's saying, let's get real.
00:38:04.480 --> 00:38:06.239
Tell me what's on your heart.
00:38:06.480 --> 00:38:13.599
As we enter into this invitation, you pray and you share your heart with him wherever you're at, and know that he is good and he will listen.
00:38:13.840 --> 00:38:17.920
And he will help you take that next step, that small, simple, gracious step of faith.
00:38:18.400 --> 00:38:19.360
Let's pray.
00:38:24.079 --> 00:38:29.840
Lord, right now, right now, I commend to you every soul in this room.
00:38:30.239 --> 00:38:31.440
They're your children.
00:38:31.599 --> 00:38:37.039
You love them, you know them, you know every hair on their head, you know every ache in their soul.
00:38:37.280 --> 00:38:41.519
And you just want them to pray, you want them to walk with you, you want them to grow in trusting you.
00:38:41.760 --> 00:38:48.239
You don't always do what we want, but you will always do what we need, and you'll tell us when we need to respond more faithfully.
00:38:49.039 --> 00:38:53.440
So, Lord, I pray that you would do it only you can do right now as we enter into this time of imitation.
00:38:53.599 --> 00:38:55.039
Speak to our hearts.
00:38:55.920 --> 00:38:57.360
Speak to our hearts.
00:38:58.880 --> 00:39:01.679
How can we get real in areas that maybe we haven't been?
00:39:02.639 --> 00:39:05.519
Speak now, Lord, for your servants are listening in Jesus' name.
