00:00:00.080 -->
00:00:01.945Hi everybody, welcome back to the channel.
00:00:02.065 -->
00:00:04.291Today I'm interviewing Francesca Amber.
00:00:04.291 -->
00:00:09.852Francesca is the host of the wildly successful podcast Law of Attraction Changed my Life.
00:00:09.852 -->
00:00:15.692It's a show about manifestation and where she talks to people about improving their life situation.
00:00:15.692 -->
00:00:22.483Two years ago, francesca started the podcast during COVID and has quickly grown it to over 5 million downloads.
00:00:22.483 -->
00:00:33.832She regularly charts at number one for self-help in the UK and has monetized her show to well over a six-figure income and has been able to make it her full-time gig.
00:00:33.939 -->
00:00:36.064We talk about a lot in this podcast.
00:00:36.064 -->
00:00:46.942We talk about how she started on YouTube when she pivoted to podcasting, unique values of podcasting, the benefits of finding the right niche for your podcast.
00:00:46.942 -->
00:00:55.435We talk about growth strategies the exact ones she used to grow her podcast and specifically how she built a community around her podcast.
00:00:55.435 -->
00:01:02.700And then we talk about monetization strategies that Francesca used to make over six figures in income every year from her podcast.
00:01:02.700 -->
00:01:04.206It's a really interesting interview.
00:01:04.206 -->
00:01:05.251I learned a ton.
00:01:05.251 -->
00:01:06.780Hope you enjoy it as well.
00:01:06.799 -->
00:01:13.412Two things to note about this interview Francesca is based in the UK and I'm in Florida, so we had to be a bit creative with scheduling.
00:01:13.412 -->
00:01:17.063So, if you notice, the lighting is changing on my side throughout the interview.
00:01:17.063 -->
00:01:20.751That's because the sun had not come up until we press record.
00:01:20.751 -->
00:01:27.563And then, second, like many podcasters, francesca does cuss in her episodes, and so we have not edited all of that out.
00:01:27.563 -->
00:01:35.900If you're listening with small children, or if just cursing, offending, or you just don't like it, this may not be the episode for you, but we really think you'll enjoy it.
00:01:36.061 -->
00:01:37.808And now I bring you Francesca Amber.
00:01:37.808 -->
00:01:39.215Hey everybody, welcome back.
00:01:39.215 -->
00:01:41.823Today I am talking to Francesca Amber.
00:01:41.823 -->
00:01:47.121Francesca hosts the highly successful podcast Law of Attraction Changed my Life.
00:01:47.121 -->
00:01:53.123It's a podcast about manifesting the good life and, as the podcast description says, it's not a cult.
00:01:53.123 -->
00:02:03.557Besides her podcast, she's also written a book, created a successful YouTube channel, runs online courses, an online book club and tons of other things.
00:02:03.557 -->
00:02:11.203So today we're going to talk about her creator journey and everything she's learned along the way, so you can learn a lot too, francesca.
00:02:11.203 -->
00:02:12.247Thank you so much for joining me.
00:02:13.170 -->
00:02:13.693Thank you.
00:02:13.693 -->
00:02:14.456I love being here.
00:02:14.456 -->
00:02:15.923I'm a big fan of Buzzsprout.
00:02:15.923 -->
00:02:19.754If it wasn't for you guys, I wouldn't be here, so I'm excited.
00:02:20.698 -->
00:02:21.360Oh, that's awesome.
00:02:21.360 -->
00:02:21.981What?
00:02:21.981 -->
00:02:27.198So I was kind of piecing together what I call like your media empire.
00:02:27.198 -->
00:02:29.266You've been creating online for a long time.
00:02:29.266 -->
00:02:33.342Where did you get your start, or what was the first thing you started creating online?
00:02:34.064 -->
00:02:35.670So the first thing was YouTube.
00:02:35.670 -->
00:02:46.675Over 10 years ago now, and I think this is because I was consuming a lot of YouTube at the time and I really just wanted to talk about the Law of Attraction, which back then not many people were talking about.
00:02:46.675 -->
00:02:51.192Only a handful of people you'd speak to would be like, oh, I've read the magic, not the magic, the secret.
00:02:51.192 -->
00:02:53.661But that was kind of it.
00:02:53.661 -->
00:03:09.599It wasn't as mainstream as it is now, and so I just started to create weekly videos, except for when I forgot, of course, because I wasn't consistent back then on how to manifest and how to use the Law of Attraction in your life in a very sort of crude, novice kind of way.
00:03:09.599 -->
00:03:14.052But people loved it and it grew steadily and I did that for 10 years.
00:03:14.814 -->
00:03:18.907Wow, for anyone who doesn't know what is the Law of Attraction.
00:03:20.012 -->
00:03:27.837So it's basically about how your thoughts can create your reality and how so many people just go through life accepting what happens to them.
00:03:27.837 -->
00:03:31.213But when you discover the Law of Attraction you realize that things aren't happening to you.
00:03:31.213 -->
00:03:35.848You are actually co-creating everything that happens to you, the good and the bad.
00:03:35.848 -->
00:03:46.352And once you realize that and you also start to develop the tools to kind of harness your own energy and harness your own mind, you can start to use that for good and create basically the life of your goddamn dreams.
00:03:48.620 -->
00:03:52.206I read an article about you in prepping for this interview.
00:03:52.206 -->
00:03:55.713You help me understand this.
00:03:55.713 -->
00:04:04.082You found your husband years before you ever met him and told people and yourself that he was going to be your husband.
00:04:04.082 -->
00:04:05.387What is this story?
00:04:06.269 -->
00:04:06.550Yeah.
00:04:06.550 -->
00:04:15.110So I went and did online dating, as we all do, and I put in six foot six and above, because you know what I was in my 20s.
00:04:15.110 -->
00:04:16.052My standards were high.
00:04:16.279 -->
00:04:17.382They've slipped since then.
00:04:17.884 -->
00:04:19.127I accept much less now.
00:04:19.127 -->
00:04:26.992But I put in six foot six and above and one person came back on my search results and it was this really tall guy next to a yacht.
00:04:26.992 -->
00:04:30.105That helped and I was like this is my husband.
00:04:30.105 -->
00:04:32.110As soon as I saw his picture I was like this is my husband.
00:04:32.110 -->
00:04:37.649And so I messaged him, but he never replied because it turned out that he was living in Australia at the time.
00:04:37.649 -->
00:04:39.007Whatever, he never replied.
00:04:39.007 -->
00:04:43.290So I put his picture on a vision board because I was very into the law of attraction at the time.
00:04:43.350 -->
00:04:47.725I was, you know, making vision boards for my future husband and I kept it for three years.
00:04:47.725 -->
00:04:51.884And three years later my friend is walking along the street and she just sees this guy.
00:04:51.884 -->
00:04:55.831She doesn't realize it's the guy from my vision board and says oh, my friend loves tall men.
00:04:55.831 -->
00:04:58.007She's got like a weird fetish for tall men.
00:04:58.007 -->
00:04:59.461Do you want to go on a blind date?
00:04:59.461 -->
00:04:59.822Now?
00:04:59.822 -->
00:05:05.651She's never done this for me before and no friend has ever set me up with a blind date, since it's the only time it's ever happened.
00:05:05.651 -->
00:05:08.341And when we meet up it's the same goddamn person.
00:05:08.341 -->
00:05:09.966And we got engaged six months later.
00:05:09.966 -->
00:05:14.444He did turn out to be gay, but that's, we were still married for six years.
00:05:14.444 -->
00:05:18.052Still counts, counts for something.
00:05:20.120 -->
00:05:21.326What would that mean to you?
00:05:21.326 -->
00:05:25.802That you I mean you show up on a blind date and it's a person that you've like.
00:05:25.802 -->
00:05:28.151You know what they look like, you've seen them before.
00:05:28.420 -->
00:05:31.588Do you know what I realized the morning of the date?
00:05:31.588 -->
00:05:45.988Because he asked if we could switch like Facebook profiles, if we could see each other on Facebook, and his profile picture was the same picture that I'd had hanging up in my wardrobe for three years and that's how I knew it was exactly the same as because it was the same picture.
00:05:45.988 -->
00:05:51.110And even to this day he changes his profile picture once every 10 years, like it's just two years.
00:05:51.110 -->
00:06:00.404But it was insane and I remember telling people like this works and the amount of times I've said with my law of attraction journey, this shit works, it works.
00:06:00.404 -->
00:06:05.163And I just told everyone I'm meeting my husband tonight and, sure enough, yeah, six months later we got married.
00:06:05.646 -->
00:06:11.271And some people have said to me since do you think that that was a failure or you forced somebody to marry you?
00:06:11.271 -->
00:06:12.396Absolutely not.
00:06:12.396 -->
00:06:14.221Everybody is for a reason or a season.
00:06:14.221 -->
00:06:16.487That man changed my life.
00:06:16.487 -->
00:06:26.192Although we had a very unhappy relationship, in some ways he was the person that was almost like what my parents should have done, like us, in a very unhappy nine to five living like in the corporate world.
00:06:26.192 -->
00:06:38.153I was just living day to day and he was like you can quit your job, you can travel the world, you can create your own business, and I did all of that under his guidance, and for that I'll be forever thankful, forever thankful.
00:06:39.581 -->
00:06:40.846Such an interesting story.
00:06:40.846 -->
00:06:43.716I think it was like a news article that I read.
00:06:43.716 -->
00:06:44.399I was going through it.
00:06:44.399 -->
00:06:47.425I'm like whoa this interview to be a lot more interesting.
00:06:48.127 -->
00:06:49.670It's crazy, he calls me a witch.
00:06:50.839 -->
00:06:51.202A witch.
00:06:51.745 -->
00:06:52.571He does call me a witch.
00:06:52.571 -->
00:06:53.718He's like well, we all know you're a witch.
00:06:53.718 -->
00:06:57.310I'm like yeah, we all are, we're all witches, You've just got to access it.
00:06:59.180 -->
00:07:03.639So, going back to the YouTube channel, you started just because you were consuming YouTube.
00:07:03.639 -->
00:07:10.303What helped you make that switch from being somebody who's just consuming YouTube to somebody who is actually a creator?
00:07:11.127 -->
00:07:12.892Well, I am a very creative person.
00:07:12.892 -->
00:07:15.161By this point, I had already written a book.
00:07:15.161 -->
00:07:21.764But back then, you know, I wrote a book in 2008, where there were real gatekeepers to that creative world.
00:07:21.764 -->
00:07:25.420You know, you couldn't just get a book published, you couldn't just create things.
00:07:25.420 -->
00:07:34.132And then, when I discovered YouTube, I was like, oh, you don't need to wait for an agent to find you or someone to hire you to be a TV presenter.
00:07:34.132 -->
00:07:36.079You can literally create your own channel.
00:07:36.079 -->
00:07:42.384And that's what I loved about it was the fact that those gatekeepers are really disappearing and you could create something for yourself.
00:07:42.384 -->
00:07:43.947So I loved it.
00:07:45.129 -->
00:07:49.605It really is the difference between I don't know like mid 90s to now.
00:07:49.605 -->
00:07:59.161You know, at first started with text online and then maybe podcasting and then video and then self publishing books through maybe Amazon and online courses.
00:07:59.161 -->
00:08:03.072The world has gone, changed very much.
00:08:03.072 -->
00:08:19.968From there is a sliver of people who get to decide what content gets created and gets distributed, because distributed, you know, distribution was the choke point and now anybody can go and start a TikTok channel and, if it's good, really start to take off.
00:08:20.711 -->
00:08:21.413It's incredible.
00:08:21.413 -->
00:08:24.788It's given us all the greatest freedoms, and that's what I love about Buzzsprout.
00:08:24.788 -->
00:08:37.456As well as that, it's such an incredibly easy platform to use and you know, I found myself in lockdown, pregnant with twins, with nothing else to do, and I was able to create the number one podcast in the UK for self development.
00:08:37.456 -->
00:08:46.063That earns me more money than I've ever earned just from using this one little free app, like you guys taught me how to use it for free.
00:08:46.063 -->
00:08:51.624There's people that charge hundreds of thousands of pounds for courses on teaching you how to start a podcast.
00:08:51.624 -->
00:08:52.927You don't need that shit.
00:08:52.927 -->
00:08:55.163You just need to watch the bus sprout videos.
00:08:55.203 -->
00:08:56.791It takes about 10 hours.
00:08:56.791 -->
00:09:00.841You need to dedicate a day to it and then boom, you're done, and I love that.
00:09:00.841 -->
00:09:04.097We can all create whatever life we want from our home.
00:09:04.097 -->
00:09:05.524We don't even need to leave our house.
00:09:07.115 -->
00:09:10.022That is an amazing testimonial.
00:09:10.022 -->
00:09:12.707You know, put that into a commercial someday.
00:09:12.707 -->
00:09:16.480So take me from this YouTube channel.
00:09:16.480 -->
00:09:18.225You start building a YouTube channel.
00:09:18.225 -->
00:09:19.596That's really taking off.
00:09:19.596 -->
00:09:24.749How does that translate into COVID lockdowns?
00:09:24.749 -->
00:09:26.673And then you decided to do a podcast.
00:09:26.673 -->
00:09:28.778Why did you not stick with the YouTube?
00:09:29.259 -->
00:09:30.823Well, there were several reasons.
00:09:30.823 -->
00:09:36.803One was that I had a daughter and as a mum, I didn't have the same amount of time as I used to have.
00:09:36.803 -->
00:10:01.658So, setting up a camera, setting up the lighting you're a man, so you won't understand this, but like doing your goddamn hair and makeup, it's just an effort and I just found that, trying to find the creative resources in my brain to think of what you wanted to do for the episode, to put it together, to articulate it was one side, but then actually looking like a human as well, like I'm not just sitting there in my pajamas.
00:10:01.697 -->
00:10:04.831It was like a whole different aspect and it was just it was too much.
00:10:04.831 -->
00:10:09.322But the other side of it as well was I was no longer consuming YouTube.
00:10:09.322 -->
00:10:11.748So I'm very like with young children.
00:10:11.748 -->
00:10:13.720I don't really like to be looking at my phone.
00:10:13.720 -->
00:10:15.865I try to not look at my phone as much as I can.
00:10:16.375 -->
00:10:21.940And something I love, love, love about podcasts is that you can listen to a podcast whilst you're cleaning.
00:10:21.940 -->
00:10:24.534You can listen to a podcast whilst you're feeding your children dinner.
00:10:24.534 -->
00:10:25.717You can do it whilst you're driving.
00:10:25.717 -->
00:10:26.801You can do it whilst you're in the bath.
00:10:26.801 -->
00:10:32.924It doesn't take away your focus or your time and that's what I absolutely love about it.
00:10:32.945 -->
00:10:45.740And I just decided like there was a point where it was like, yeah, it's about the hair and makeup, but also it's like I don't want my listeners or my viewers to be ignoring their children in the corner and sitting looking staring into a phone.
00:10:45.740 -->
00:10:46.722I didn't want that.
00:10:46.722 -->
00:10:50.537I want my listeners to be listening to what I'm saying.
00:10:50.537 -->
00:10:56.913You know we do a lot of stuff about energetic cleaning and cleaning your front door and cleaning your window and things that actually raise your vibe and make you feel good.
00:10:56.913 -->
00:11:09.279I want people to be doing that, or getting out for a walk in nature whilst consuming my content, and so for me and I'm a massive fan of podcasts so for me, that was the only way forward and I just stopped YouTube completely and changed to podcasting.
00:11:10.201 -->
00:11:15.417Wow, yeah, I really feel what you're saying, because potty has.
00:11:15.417 -->
00:11:20.976He's one of the few mediums that accepts that you have a life outside of the media you're consuming.
00:11:20.976 -->
00:11:24.726Netflix wants full attention Books.
00:11:24.726 -->
00:11:31.462You need to be focused and staring right into the book when you're watching any sort of social media.
00:11:31.462 -->
00:11:35.177The entire goal is to keep your attention as long as possible.
00:11:35.498 -->
00:11:35.778Yeah.
00:11:36.159 -->
00:11:43.710And podcasting is saying I know you do other stuff, that's cool, we're just going to be talking in the background.
00:11:43.710 -->
00:11:47.029And I grew up you know the United States a little bit different.
00:11:47.029 -->
00:11:50.212We drive everywhere and so we used to do long, long road trips.
00:11:50.212 -->
00:11:56.548You know eight, nine hours, all the whole family in the car, and we listened to audiobooks.
00:11:56.548 -->
00:12:01.104And what was wonderful about it was that it was a family shared experience.
00:12:01.104 -->
00:12:09.216We weren't all individually staring into a device more iPhones back then but you're not staring into a device, you're not separate.
00:12:09.216 -->
00:12:14.615We all were listening to the same book and podcasting still allows us to do that.
00:12:14.615 -->
00:12:23.947Even if maybe some of your younger children don't catch all of the topics that are being discussed, they're being introduced into an adult conversation.
00:12:24.951 -->
00:12:34.811Yeah, definitely, and actually the amount of listeners that say to me I listened to this with my mom or I listened to this with my daughter and it's something that they can bond over, that's amazing.
00:12:34.811 -->
00:12:39.566And, like I said again, it's just not you sitting looking into your phone, which I love.
00:12:41.897 -->
00:12:48.696So you're pregnant with twins, you have the lockdown and you decide that podcasting is for you.
00:12:48.696 -->
00:12:51.345What does the beginning of your podcasting journey look like?
00:12:54.200 -->
00:12:56.264So, yeah, I had basically nothing to do.
00:12:56.264 -->
00:13:03.414I was very, very bored and my sister was the one that just kept saying I don't think you should give up on Law of Attraction, change my life.
00:13:03.414 -->
00:13:04.557So many people loved it.
00:13:04.557 -->
00:13:07.345You loved doing it, but just do it as a podcast instead.
00:13:07.345 -->
00:13:10.280And so I'm a massive technophobe huge.
00:13:10.280 -->
00:13:19.489And so that put me off and I joined a free webinar type thing with this online person that was like I'll show you how to start a podcast.
00:13:19.489 -->
00:13:21.938This girl did not show you how to start a podcast.
00:13:21.938 -->
00:13:28.001It was all one big advert to sign up for 600 pounds and basically she'll teach you how to start a podcast.
00:13:28.001 -->
00:13:33.506And so I just started Googling during this webinar and I was like what is the best host in the UK?
00:13:33.506 -->
00:13:34.431Like what should I use?
00:13:34.431 -->
00:13:35.335Because I had no idea.
00:13:35.335 -->
00:13:37.684And Buzzsprout just kept coming up time and time again.
00:13:37.684 -->
00:13:58.417And so I looked on there and what got me was these easy, like idiot style, absolute idiot style videos that showed you exactly what microphone you need to buy, which is a $60 microphone from Amazon, which I'm still using to this day I may be on my third one, but still like it tells you exactly how to edit, how to upload it, which format to upload it in.
00:13:58.417 -->
00:14:00.865It was mind blowing for me.
00:14:00.865 -->
00:14:07.086So I spent an entire day, I spent 10 hours watching those videos, writing notes, and boom, I was away.
00:14:07.147 -->
00:14:10.839I was doing it and to begin with it was just a real passion project.
00:14:10.839 -->
00:14:14.934It was something to take me out of this, quite frankly, horrible situation.
00:14:14.934 -->
00:14:16.337You know, I'd lost my business.
00:14:16.337 -->
00:14:23.566I was living in a new city where I didn't know anyone, so I moved in, got pregnant and then, boom, you're locked down.
00:14:23.566 -->
00:14:25.091You're not allowed to see anyone.
00:14:25.091 -->
00:14:34.179So I had no friends here, I had nothing, and so it was really like an escape for me to focus my attention on while we were in this horrible pandemic.
00:14:34.179 -->
00:14:36.125And it was just a bit of a passion project.
00:14:36.125 -->
00:14:37.856And then it just grew and grew and grew.
00:14:39.480 -->
00:15:12.323One of the things that's I love so much about creating content especially even the content that we create for Buzzsprout as our marketing channel, like our YouTube channel and just any blogs or anything is that you can just pour a ton of work into something and then give it away, and if it's good enough enough, people will find it that now it makes sense for you to have spent, you know, four months working on an online course, or months and months recording a few videos, or years working on a podcast.
00:15:12.323 -->
00:15:18.144Those numbers start to make sense once you get to a certain level of quality.
00:15:18.144 -->
00:15:27.831When we had to record things for just a handful of people or go give a seminar to maybe a hundred people, the numbers just don't add up.
00:15:27.831 -->
00:15:33.586But YouTube and podcasting and just online creating really changed the numbers quite a bit.
00:15:34.775 -->
00:15:41.667Yeah, of course, because it's accessible to pretty much everyone, except for my own mother, who still can't work out access podcasts.
00:15:41.667 -->
00:15:43.394She's still never listened to a goddamn episode.
00:15:43.394 -->
00:15:44.115But there we go.
00:15:44.937 -->
00:15:47.644But yeah it's accessible to everybody, it's free.
00:15:47.844 -->
00:15:57.628And I think I remember when you guys, like, created those videos, you were saying make sure you do a podcast about something that you are truly passionate about and you can speak about for a long time.
00:15:57.628 -->
00:16:04.922And I think that that is a common mistake people might make is to if you are in the phase of having a baby, you ain't going to want to talk about having a baby forever.
00:16:04.922 -->
00:16:09.880If you are I know some people do them about grief and stuff you don't want to talk about grief forever.
00:16:09.880 -->
00:16:17.618But I knew that talking about the law of attraction something that I'd already spent 10 years creating content about was something I could talk about all day long.
00:16:17.618 -->
00:16:19.245I could talk about it till the day I die.
00:16:20.288 -->
00:16:25.470And so it just kept going and, like you say, those numbers just went up and up and up and my library was building.
00:16:25.470 -->
00:16:33.322So not only were people listening to the new episode I was bringing out each week, but people were always going back and discovering the podcast and starting from a fresh.
00:16:33.322 -->
00:16:41.918And I've still got people now that say I discovered your podcast last week and I've listened to all 113 episodes and I'm like, good God, do you not work?
00:16:42.298 -->
00:16:48.125But yeah, so it's amazing that it's this whole resource there, now that, yes, I do create online courses.
00:16:48.125 -->
00:16:50.153Yes, I have a Patreon book club.
00:16:50.153 -->
00:16:51.499That's, you know, a paid subscription.
00:16:51.499 -->
00:16:52.624I have all of these things.
00:16:52.624 -->
00:16:57.341But if you have nothing right now and you just want to consume free content, it's all there.
00:16:57.341 -->
00:16:58.143It's all there.
00:16:58.143 -->
00:16:59.407There's so much value there.
00:17:01.154 -->
00:17:07.916Yeah, so for I haven't introduced this yet, but you have already hit 5 million downloads in two years.
00:17:08.238 -->
00:17:14.683Yes, what you're saying about that, is that good Cause I asked Marshall what I was like am I one of your best podcasters?
00:17:14.683 -->
00:17:16.734And he would say Marshall owns Buzzsprout, doesn't he?
00:17:16.734 -->
00:17:17.477Does he own it?
00:17:18.058 -->
00:17:19.241Yeah, he's one of the co-founders.
00:17:19.261 -->
00:17:23.104Yes, One of the co-founders and I was like am I your top podcaster?
00:17:23.104 -->
00:17:28.564And he was like I hate to tell you, but no, but he's like but you are one of our fastest growing, so I'll take that.
00:17:28.564 -->
00:17:29.425I will take that.
00:17:30.455 -->
00:17:37.303Yeah, 5 million downloads in two years is exceptionally good, especially at some of the fastest.
00:17:37.303 -->
00:17:43.623Growing are like the celebrities who are already a celebrity, and then they're like, oh, I'm talking to my celebrity friends on a podcast.
00:17:43.983 -->
00:17:44.064Yeah.
00:17:44.084 -->
00:17:48.724And so, yeah, when Will Smith starts a podcast, people know who he is already.
00:17:48.724 -->
00:17:58.334For people who don't have this massive celebrity presence, to go and start a podcast and grow this quickly is really, really uncommon.
00:17:58.334 -->
00:18:01.443So what do you attribute to your success?
00:18:02.267 -->
00:18:04.272Shall I tell you it's the law of attraction.
00:18:04.272 -->
00:18:08.010Do you not think I law of attraction this, I manifested this into my life.
00:18:08.010 -->
00:18:10.523Do you think I would do it if it wasn't going to be successful?
00:18:10.523 -->
00:18:13.880I knew that this was going to change my life and I visualize all the time.
00:18:13.880 -->
00:18:21.471You know, I have affirmations that I play every single day while I'm having a shower or doing whatever, and it's I am the number one podcaster in the UK.
00:18:21.471 -->
00:18:27.414I am the highest paid podcaster in the UK and I truly believe that one day I will be that because it's what I affirmed myself.
00:18:27.414 -->
00:18:28.900All the time.
00:18:29.461 -->
00:18:39.361I feel very busy in my mind and in reality, although I do have a lot going on, a lot of it is because I see so much stuff in the future that I want to do and I feel like it's coming.
00:18:39.361 -->
00:18:44.344So if you believe that it's getting bigger and things are coming to you all the time, it will just happen that way.
00:18:44.344 -->
00:18:46.272But also, my content is pretty goddamn good.
00:18:46.272 -->
00:18:47.878I'm not going to lie, it's good.
00:18:47.878 -->
00:18:50.730So, yeah, I absolutely I love it.
00:18:50.730 -->
00:18:51.372I love it, love it.
00:18:51.372 -->
00:18:51.834I would do it for free.
00:18:51.834 -->
00:18:54.257In fact, I did do it for free for so long.
00:18:55.357 -->
00:19:03.913How I mean you're creating the content, and we everybody knows creating excellent content is really, really important.
00:19:03.913 -->
00:19:05.586That is half of the equation.
00:19:05.586 -->
00:19:13.830But actually marketing the content, getting it in front of people Podcasting does not market itself like a YouTube channel.
00:19:13.830 -->
00:19:18.823When people are watching it a lot, youtube starts recommending it A social channel.
00:19:18.823 -->
00:19:24.900When people retweet you or they like something on Instagram, then Instagram starts sharing it more often.
00:19:24.900 -->
00:19:26.867That doesn't happen in podcasting.
00:19:26.867 -->
00:19:32.076So how are you doing anything on the marketing side, or is this 100% organic?
00:19:32.076 -->
00:19:32.920People are finding you.
00:19:33.520 -->
00:19:38.192No, I've never, ever paid for any kind of advertising or marketing or anything.
00:19:39.708 -->
00:19:58.920To begin with, it was just word of mouth and I think that, using my existing Instagram which was not anything crazy you know, my personal Instagram had like 3000 followers on it or something but just posting consistently about it, I think people sometimes think you have to make massive moves to be successful and really it's just about consistency.
00:19:59.202 -->
00:20:00.920It's like I show up every single day.
00:20:00.920 -->
00:20:16.910I show up and I talk about my podcast, probably every day on my Instagram, like in some form or another, I will talk about, you know, my book club, or I'll talk about the podcast I'm recording, or I'll talk about just something like today I'll mention on my stories that I've just done this interview with you.
00:20:16.910 -->
00:20:20.911It's about every day showing up because I think people are so scared.
00:20:20.911 -->
00:20:35.900There's a great book called Bragg Better by Meredith Feynman and I listened to a podcast with her and she said people mention what they have once and then they feel like everyone's going to be sick of them or they'll be bragging if they talk about it too many times.
00:20:35.900 -->
00:20:42.773But the thing is, every time you mention something on your social media, only maybe 1% to 10% of people are going to see it right.
00:20:43.181 -->
00:20:43.944Out of that half.
00:20:44.267 -->
00:20:46.900Half the people have probably got a screaming child in the background won't even hear it.
00:20:47.541 -->
00:20:48.486Half of them will forget it.
00:20:48.940 -->
00:20:52.900So you have to mention what you have to offer repeatedly, every day.
00:20:52.900 -->
00:20:54.867It has to be your obsession.
00:20:54.867 -->
00:20:56.907This is not just my passion, but my obsession.
00:20:56.907 -->
00:21:01.900I talk about it constantly and it is, I think, because it is such a big part of my life.
00:21:01.900 -->
00:21:09.465I do a self-development book club as part of the podcast and that in itself is its own podcast, but I really live that.
00:21:09.465 -->
00:21:12.628So last month we did the five second rule.
00:21:12.628 -->
00:21:15.920So you really live that five second rule every day.
00:21:15.920 -->
00:21:22.920So every day it's really easy to go on your stories and say, right, I really don't want to work out today, but I'm just going to go five, four, three, two, one and I'm going to work out and you can talk about it.
00:21:23.682 -->
00:21:32.855The month before we did a Feng Shui book and I could do stories and videos about how I'm cleaning my front door and energetically cleans in my house and redoing my love and relationship corner.
00:21:32.855 -->
00:21:33.920The content is there.
00:21:33.920 -->
00:21:38.832You just need to be open to the opportunities and just talk about it, talk about it, talk about it.
00:21:38.832 -->
00:21:40.920Link back to the podcast, link back to the podcast.
00:21:40.920 -->
00:21:51.127Everything I do links back to the podcast and that is my number one priority, Even though technically I don't really.
00:21:51.127 -->
00:21:53.913For a long time I didn't even earn any money from the podcast.
00:21:53.980 -->
00:21:55.887It was all from these little side hustles to do with it.
00:21:55.887 -->
00:22:06.568What I have to remember is I can never get caught up in the book club or my online workshops or whatever it is that I'm selling, because without the podcast, none of that stuff works.
00:22:06.568 -->
00:22:16.535So my number one priority, all of my energy, has to go into creating the best podcast every single Friday and make sure that that episode is going to make people come back.
00:22:16.535 -->
00:22:21.920It's going to make people share it, and that's another thing my amazing listeners do is they constantly share it with their friends.
00:22:21.920 -->
00:22:23.829They share it on their stories.
00:22:23.829 -->
00:22:24.693I repost them.
00:22:24.693 -->
00:22:25.900Share, share, share, share.
00:22:25.900 -->
00:22:27.805That's all it is every goddamn day.
00:22:30.000 -->
00:22:34.451Word of mouth, as often cited as like one of the best ways to grow a podcast.
00:22:34.451 -->
00:22:45.489Is there anything you do to get help your listeners share the podcast, because we all want that to happen, but it often feels like it's totally out of our control.
00:22:46.361 -->
00:22:54.493I think that the only way you can guarantee that is to create such good content that people want to share that they are listening to it.
00:22:54.493 -->
00:23:01.859I have a friend that has a bit of a failing business and she was like sending me these stories and begging me to repost them on her things.
00:23:01.859 -->
00:23:03.705She's like can you share this with me?
00:23:03.705 -->
00:23:09.551And it's like I didn't share it because it's like begging people to share your stuff is never going to work.
00:23:09.551 -->
00:23:14.880Just like if you start a business and you beg your family and friends to make an order with you, that's never going to be sustainable.
00:23:14.880 -->
00:23:22.874And so I actually don't ever ask my friends or family or anyone to listen to my podcast or share my podcast, because that's not sustainable.
00:23:22.874 -->
00:23:25.528What they'll share one time and it's inauthentic, it won't work.
00:23:26.059 -->
00:23:33.839So people, I want people to feel a moment in that podcast where they're like this has changed my life, this has changed my life.
00:23:33.839 -->
00:23:38.920I've had people message me saying there was a moment in that podcast where I realized that I had to leave my husband.
00:23:38.920 -->
00:23:40.920There was a moment when I realized I was in a toxic relationship.
00:23:40.920 -->
00:23:44.068There's a moment when I realized I have to quit my job.
00:23:44.068 -->
00:23:44.911I have to change my life.
00:23:44.911 -->
00:23:48.750That is what will make people share, and they'll share it in an authentic way.
00:23:48.750 -->
00:23:50.920And not only will they do it once, they will do it repeatedly.
00:23:50.920 -->
00:23:52.900They'll become your loyal fans.
00:23:52.900 -->
00:23:54.567And so that's all I do.
00:23:54.567 -->
00:23:56.703I don't beg for people to do anything.
00:23:56.703 -->
00:23:58.127I don't ask.
00:23:58.188 -->
00:23:58.869That's wonderful.
00:23:58.869 -->
00:24:05.847One of the pieces of advice I often give, kind of related to this, is when you're picking your topic.
00:24:05.847 -->
00:24:11.255The topic for your show has to be so honed in, like very specific.
00:24:11.255 -->
00:24:23.193You know what you're teaching, you know what you're discussing, so that when somebody is listening to you they go oh, this podcast is for my friend Jeremy.
00:24:23.193 -->
00:24:29.787I'm going to tell him about it because we've talked about the law of attraction and so I know I've got to share with him.
00:24:29.787 -->
00:24:35.593This is a podcast about rebuilding vintage land cruisers and he has an old land cruiser.
00:24:35.593 -->
00:24:37.265I've got to tell him about this podcast.
00:24:37.265 -->
00:24:44.775These shows that are like hey, I just got to talk to interesting people who do interesting things.
00:24:44.775 -->
00:24:54.394Yeah, everybody's interested in that, and thus no one springs to mind as I need to tell it, this one person about this podcast.
00:24:54.394 -->
00:24:59.876But when, the more specific the show, the more recommendable it really becomes.
00:25:00.578 -->
00:25:01.582I agree, but don't you think?
00:25:01.582 -->
00:25:05.791I think people are scared of niching too much.
00:25:05.791 -->
00:25:11.787They're so scared because they don't want to shut people out, and I feel like you're exactly right.
00:25:11.787 -->
00:25:16.920I feel like I often say, oh, it's mostly women that listen to my podcast.
00:25:16.920 -->
00:25:20.920It's something like 98% women and then like 2% gay men.
00:25:20.920 -->
00:25:25.759But it's like sometimes I still feel like there's a book I really want to do in my book club.
00:25:25.759 -->
00:25:30.036Right, that is all about how to manifest using your menstrual cycle.
00:25:30.036 -->
00:25:30.900It's all about periods.
00:25:31.280 -->
00:25:37.920But I know I've got out of the 3,000 members, I think I've got about seven men and I'm terrified of ostracising them.
00:25:37.920 -->
00:25:53.911But the reality is this podcast is by a single woman who is a single mother, who has been in very difficult relationships, and the more that I talk about that and sometimes I still get scared I think, oh, is this putting people off that don't have children, that aren't single, that aren't women?
00:25:53.911 -->
00:25:57.900You can't be scared of that, because you will find your people.
00:25:57.900 -->
00:26:03.920You'll find your people more and more and, like you say people that listen to it, or say my friend Deborah is about to go through a divorce.
00:26:03.920 -->
00:26:06.890She's like doing whatever, I'll recommend it to her.
00:26:06.890 -->
00:26:09.545And so, yeah, I think, even me.
00:26:09.545 -->
00:26:13.811I still get scared to niche down too much and ostracise people.
00:26:13.811 -->
00:26:14.934But you have to really.
00:26:14.934 -->
00:26:16.057And you know what?
00:26:16.057 -->
00:26:17.159The gay men still listen.
00:26:17.159 -->
00:26:19.920They still listen, they still love it, even if I'm talking about periods.
00:26:23.175 -->
00:26:23.880It's so wild to me.
00:26:23.880 -->
00:26:26.920There's seven, eight billion people in the world.
00:26:26.920 -->
00:26:46.920There are millions and millions of people interested in almost everything, and yet when we're building up our own content, we start having this, you know belief, pop into our brains that well, if it's not applicable to my cousin and it's not applicable to one of my coworkers, then this probably won't be successful.
00:26:46.920 -->
00:27:00.920And I think it comes from we all used to consume media that was approved by gatekeepers, that was on TV, that was mainstream, and when things are mainstream they have to be brought appeal.
00:27:00.920 -->
00:27:07.834But now, when we're in a world of kind of like internet abundance, anything can be a show.
00:27:07.834 -->
00:27:11.920You would never have a show on the BBC about the law of attraction.
00:27:11.920 -->
00:27:18.920You wouldn't have a show on you know news in the United States about rebuilding old land cruisers.
00:27:18.920 -->
00:27:20.880Those aren't going to exist.
00:27:20.880 -->
00:27:32.655But as a podcast those can be wildly successful because the audience can be so much smaller as a percentage, because we're reaching such a larger group in the world.
00:27:33.321 -->
00:27:34.425Yeah, no, I love it.
00:27:35.821 -->
00:27:40.853So a couple of times you've talked about making money from your podcast.
00:27:40.853 -->
00:27:55.920So can you talk and walk us through a few of the ways you've set your podcast up to make money and just teach us anything you can about how to start monetizing and turn a passion into something we actually do full time?
00:27:56.762 -->
00:28:01.900I love this because I am like a serial entrepreneur at heart, even though half time I don't know what I'm doing.
00:28:01.900 -->
00:28:02.586So that was the thing.
00:28:02.586 -->
00:28:08.191So from the beginning, I noticed the numbers were creeping up and the podcast was.
00:28:08.191 -->
00:28:16.711I think it was number three in self development within the first couple of weeks, which I was like what and it's been number one in the charts pretty much most weeks for the last two years.
00:28:16.711 -->
00:28:24.920But I wasn't making any money from it because, until recently, buzzsprout didn't even do their advertising, so I was making no money from it.
00:28:24.920 -->
00:28:27.809So I realized quickly that I had to figure out other ways.
00:28:27.809 -->
00:28:40.920So I think one of the first things that I ever did was I created a notebook that just said shit, I'm manifesting in 2021, and I sold like a thousand of them, my God those trips to the post office were wild.
00:28:41.424 -->
00:28:42.920I was literally handwriting the addresses.
00:28:42.920 -->
00:28:48.809I was working hard, not smart, and I just started to sell a few little products.
00:28:48.809 -->
00:28:49.961So I did notebooks.
00:28:49.961 -->
00:29:02.435Then I created these manifestation boxes where I basically found all these different little things and bits and pieces, and I got some worksheets printed and I put them together into a box and sent it out as like a little subscription box, and I love doing that.
00:29:02.435 -->
00:29:07.530But all of these things were very labor intensive, incredibly labor intensive.
00:29:07.530 -->
00:29:09.885But again, I was in lockdown with newborns.
00:29:09.885 -->
00:29:11.671I had nothing else to do so I was like why not?
00:29:11.671 -->
00:29:15.549And then I started to really hone in on the things that were really working for me.
00:29:15.549 -->
00:29:30.686I only have one product that I sell, like one physical product I sell, which is gratitude necklaces, and they are different necklaces that say different affirmations like love, thankful, gratitude, blessed, all these things, and I absolutely love them.
00:29:30.686 -->
00:29:36.873I've now got to a point where I don't do them in my kitchen anymore, time lapsing myself wrapping them up for content.
00:29:36.873 -->
00:29:40.674They're in a warehouse and they're all taken care of and that's incredible.
00:29:40.674 -->
00:29:41.880I'm really proud of those.
00:29:43.145 -->
00:29:45.920And then I started creating digital products, which is where shit got real.
00:29:45.920 -->
00:29:59.920So my first ever course I did was a New Year's Day goal setting party, and so I discovered lots and lots of stuff around how to set goals and actually achieve them.
00:29:59.920 -->
00:30:18.920Like so, many people were mocking the whole New Year, new Me type thing and you shouldn't mock people that are saying New Year, new Me, because these are people that genuinely want to change their lives and they have all the best intentions in the world to quit these toxic habits or quit these toxic relationships, but we just don't have the tools to actually see it through.
00:30:18.920 -->
00:30:21.900And so I was like I have all this information, I know how to do this.
00:30:21.900 -->
00:30:24.457Why don't I share with people what I do?
00:30:24.457 -->
00:30:24.920On January, the first?
00:30:24.920 -->
00:30:31.900We won't call it a course or a workshop, we'll call it a party, and I sold tickets for £20.
00:30:31.900 -->
00:30:37.788I sold £50,000 of tickets and it was a three hour party on New Year's Day.
00:30:38.833 -->
00:30:39.335Wow.
00:30:39.809 -->
00:30:42.680Yes, that was the first thing I ever did.
00:30:42.680 -->
00:30:45.278Do you know what Every single person that did it was like?
00:30:45.278 -->
00:30:46.836It was absolutely incredible.
00:30:46.836 -->
00:30:48.636They got so much from it, they loved it.
00:30:48.636 -->
00:30:51.997People still message me now saying we're on month six or a month eight.
00:30:51.997 -->
00:30:52.972This has happened.
00:30:52.972 -->
00:30:53.556This has happened.
00:30:53.556 -->
00:30:54.394It's been incredible.
00:30:55.111 -->
00:31:01.557I'm actually in the process of turning that workshop into a book so that it's a lot more widely accessible for people.
00:31:01.557 -->
00:31:04.358I plan on doing that workshop every January 1st, because do you know what?
00:31:04.358 -->
00:31:06.096That's what I do on January 1st?
00:31:06.096 -->
00:31:13.919I sit at home with a glass of rose or a bottle and I put ambient music on, I intentionally light a candle and I plan my year.
00:31:13.919 -->
00:31:16.513So I thought, why not share it with other people and help other people?
00:31:16.513 -->
00:31:18.114That's just a thing.
00:31:18.114 -->
00:31:25.981So once I did that, I realized, wow, I really can share my expertise and make money from this.
00:31:25.981 -->
00:31:32.057I can start to earn a living from this podcast, even if it's not directly, like I say, from directly from the main podcast.
00:31:32.057 -->
00:31:33.815And so I started doing that.
00:31:33.815 -->
00:31:35.738I've created just a handful of workshops.
00:31:35.738 -->
00:31:37.036I've done maybe two or three.
00:31:37.089 -->
00:31:42.719I did one about setting up a side hustle, like manifesting your perfect side hustle, things like that.
00:31:42.719 -->
00:31:49.238Then that's when the amazing thing happened, which is I started my Patreon book club.
00:31:49.238 -->
00:31:56.979So there is a book called the Magic, which is a 28-day manifestation process, and I talked about it loads on my podcast.
00:31:56.979 -->
00:32:00.375I was like, every time I do this process, something wild will happen.
00:32:00.375 -->
00:32:06.515I'll get pregnant, I'll divorce someone, I'll move house, like something life-changing will happen, like something really big.
00:32:06.515 -->
00:32:08.817And so many people were like, can we do it with you?
00:32:08.817 -->
00:32:15.397And I just I couldn't figure out how I was like I don't know how I would facilitate that, I don't know how you could do it with me.
00:32:15.397 -->
00:32:22.056And that's when I discovered the Patreon app where people could basically pay a monthly subscription and they could do the book with me.
00:32:22.056 -->
00:32:26.219I would do a podcast every day, keep motivation and morale high and keep people going.
00:32:27.450 -->
00:32:32.039And so that was the idea was just to basically do this one month and do one book.
00:32:32.039 -->
00:32:39.896Well, over a thousand people signed up and that was the first proper money that I had earned since my salon closed in lockdown.
00:32:39.896 -->
00:32:47.372Like that was the first money that I had earned in nearly a year, and I now had two newborn babies a six year old, and I was just.
00:32:47.372 -->
00:32:52.492I didn't know what to do and I saw it and people got so much from it and not only people.
00:32:52.492 -->
00:32:53.778I got so much from it.
00:32:54.029 -->
00:32:57.531Having that accountability of I have to do this because this is my job.
00:32:57.531 -->
00:32:58.675I have to keep up with it.
00:32:58.675 -->
00:33:01.296We're now 25 books in.
00:33:01.296 -->
00:33:03.057I've been doing it for 25 months.
00:33:03.057 -->
00:33:13.273We now have over 3000 members and it's incredible, it's absolutely incredible the transformations that people have had from that book club.
00:33:13.273 -->
00:33:22.752It's truly life changing, like I say not just for them but for me as well, and that is really like my bread and butter, that is like my main income, that's what I spend.
00:33:22.752 -->
00:33:26.897Probably I'd say 80% of my working time I spend on that.
00:33:26.897 -->
00:33:34.974And it would be really tempting, with each book, just to, at the beginning of the month, back to record all of the podcast episodes and just do it.
00:33:34.974 -->
00:33:35.616But I don't.
00:33:35.616 -->
00:33:38.317I really live the book, I embody it.
00:33:38.317 -->
00:33:54.414I do the processes Because otherwise you can't really say this book's gonna change your life and then if your life isn't changing, it won't take that long before people are like she's just recording episodes and just like she's not actually doing it, like what in her life has changed.
00:33:54.529 -->
00:34:02.116But I think the reason people resonate with me is because they've seen me go from literally being a single mum of three young children.
00:34:02.116 -->
00:34:07.776I mean, when I first started this I was pregnant and I genuinely didn't know how I was gonna afford to do anything.
00:34:07.776 -->
00:34:09.958I didn't know how I was gonna afford to live a normal life again.
00:34:09.958 -->
00:34:10.972I lost my business.
00:34:10.972 -->
00:34:12.599I'd lost everything pretty much.
00:34:12.599 -->
00:34:14.797I didn't even know if I was gonna be able to keep my house.
00:34:15.269 -->
00:34:34.851And now, through 25, 26 books, we have worked on mindset, we've worked on wealth, we've done a lot of work with wealth, we've done a lot of work with basically all aspects of self development, and people can see that I now am richer than I've ever been, I'm happier than I've ever been, I'm thriving, I'm traveling, I've got three children on my own.
00:34:34.851 -->
00:34:36.938I'm bloody doing it, man, I'm living proof.
00:34:36.938 -->
00:34:38.769And I think that's what people wanna see is.
00:34:38.769 -->
00:34:42.195They like to see the transformation and then they get on board with it.
00:34:42.195 -->
00:34:44.137I don't even have to really sell the book club.
00:34:44.137 -->
00:34:47.655People see it and they see what I'm doing every month and they're like I want a part of that.
00:34:47.655 -->
00:34:50.373I want my life to glow up and then here we are.
00:34:52.532 -->
00:35:11.016One of the threads I keep seeing through all of these different ways you've monetized from the book club to the physical products, to the courses, to the New Year's Day party all of them are that you have a very specific audience, that you have put something out into the world and said here's what I wanna be interested in.
00:35:11.190 -->
00:35:12.576I'm into this law of attraction.
00:35:12.576 -->
00:35:19.079I think that this would be really good for your life and the people who are interested in that find you.
00:35:19.079 -->
00:35:37.376And then you say, okay, we've now built a community around a specific idea, and then so this makes sense for us all to have the same workbook or the same journal, or the type of jewelry that I would like is actually the type of jewelry you like.
00:35:37.376 -->
00:35:44.920You've created a validated audience that you know things that they will probably find valuable.
00:35:44.920 -->
00:35:51.978And so when you start posting things like hey, we're gonna try a book club that you can actually get a thousand people to join.
00:35:51.978 -->
00:36:02.876If I started a book club right now, I have not built a community around books or around a specific topic, and so the chances that I would get a thousand people to sign up is zero.
00:36:02.876 -->
00:36:14.717And so I love how kind of building the podcast and building the Instagram community, have really easily moved right in to monetizing all of this audience.
00:36:15.690 -->
00:36:24.418Yeah, and I think that that only works if the community is genuine, and I think that there's a million books out there and there's a million posts on how to build a community.
00:36:24.889 -->
00:36:28.195But, you can only build a community if your intentions are pure.
00:36:28.195 -->
00:36:33.855When I started this, I was finding lockdown hard and I just thought I do know tools to help get myself out of this.
00:36:33.855 -->
00:36:42.458I'm sure this could help other people too, and I think it's through genuinely wanting to help other people, especially people that are similar to, maybe, single mothers, people in the same situation.
00:36:42.458 -->
00:36:46.619I think that is what genuinely builds a community.
00:36:46.619 -->
00:36:47.221And do you know what?
00:36:47.221 -->
00:36:49.836The community, especially the book club community, are incredible.
00:36:49.876 -->
00:36:55.797There's a woman that recently, whilst doing one of the books, realized I need to leave my husband Like this is a really toxic relationship.
00:36:55.797 -->
00:36:57.054I need to get out with my children.
00:36:57.054 -->
00:37:04.318The book club members fundraised over $3,000 to help her leave her husband and to get out and to go to a thing.
00:37:04.318 -->
00:37:07.139And there's people that can't afford the book one particular month.
00:37:07.139 -->
00:37:11.655Other people will say give me your address, I'll send you a book, I'll buy it on Amazon and I'll send it to you.
00:37:11.655 -->
00:37:17.032That is the kind of people you know I do in the name of the book club, which is that's what we call ourselves the book club bitches.
00:37:17.889 -->
00:37:21.233I do a charity donation every single month to a different charity.
00:37:21.233 -->
00:37:22.853That kind of resonates with whatever we're doing.
00:37:22.853 -->
00:37:53.713That is the kind of community that we've built and I think a part of that is you have to be really real and honest and I have been through a goddamn journey with these people and I think because particularly the Patreon it's behind a paywall you feel like you can be a little bit more honest with people and you know people have seen me cry and be genuinely like devastated, to go through the hardest of times and I think if you're honest with people and you're not just sitting there saying, if you do these 10 tips, you can have a yacht this time next year, you can buy a dream house.
00:37:53.713 -->
00:37:57.195I'm not saying that Sometimes I'll say this shit is not working for me.
00:37:57.195 -->
00:37:58.139I feel really down.
00:37:58.139 -->
00:37:59.121This hasn't worked.
00:37:59.121 -->
00:38:01.693This is where my life is going badly, this is where it's going well.
00:38:02.190 -->
00:38:07.498People respect that, but that has to be a two-way thing and I respect them as well.
00:38:07.498 -->
00:38:13.034I will never sell something that I don't feel is genuine or good for them.
00:38:13.034 -->
00:38:17.081I'm not gonna suddenly start doing really high priced.
00:38:17.081 -->
00:38:18.635I don't know things I don't believe in.
00:38:18.635 -->
00:38:22.297I just don't Even down to the things that I do affiliate marketing with.
00:38:22.809 -->
00:38:37.119The only things I promote are things like Hello Fresh, which I genuinely think have taught me to cook and help me to improve my health, and these vitamins that call better you, that are like oral sprays, because I've got Crohn's disease and I can't digest vitamins through my stomach.
00:38:37.119 -->
00:38:37.692It's the whole thing.
00:38:37.692 -->
00:38:41.655It's like things that I'd see them and I'm like that would really help people.
00:38:41.655 -->
00:38:46.400You're never gonna find me doing an advert for vaping.
00:38:46.400 -->
00:38:47.181Do you know what I mean?
00:38:47.181 -->
00:38:49.458It doesn't matter how much money it is, I just won't.
00:38:49.458 -->
00:38:51.717So I think that respect goes two ways.
00:38:51.717 -->
00:38:58.518If you respect your community, they will thank you forever and they will pay for things and they will be happy to be a part of it.
00:38:58.518 -->
00:38:59.994But that respect goes both ways.
00:38:59.994 -->
00:39:04.195I have to respect them as well and not ever try and push something that I don't believe is good for them.
00:39:05.789 -->
00:39:07.336Yeah, I think that is so important.
00:39:07.336 -->
00:39:13.057I mean, we've seen in podcasting people who do kind of go on this fake journey for a bit.
00:39:13.057 -->
00:39:16.199You can't really keep that up a whole long time.
00:39:16.199 -->
00:39:21.737You know, if you're doing 45 minute episodes every week, you can only keep that facade up for some amount of time.
00:39:21.737 -->
00:39:25.679After a few months it's gonna show through.
00:39:25.849 -->
00:39:27.896Okay, that's not really who this person is.
00:39:27.896 -->
00:39:34.273They're telling me to buy this thing, but it doesn't even look like they're actually using the thing they're telling me to buy.
00:39:34.273 -->
00:39:46.478Or they're recommending a course on how to do a particular thing, start a YouTube channel, but they don't even have a YouTube channel and all of the kind of.
00:39:46.478 -->
00:39:54.896Just the fakeness starts to really show through and what you end up with is an audience that's churning through pretty quickly.
00:39:54.896 -->
00:40:00.594You might be getting a lot of new people, but as soon as people kind of see through the lies, they just move on and they go.
00:40:00.594 -->
00:40:03.197Okay, this was all a scam the whole time.
00:40:03.197 -->
00:40:10.938It's much better to really be living than telling authentically, like here's what I'm interested in and trying to teach.
00:40:10.938 -->
00:40:17.380When you're doing that, you're going to attract people and then they will not end up leaving to go somewhere else.
00:40:18.130 -->
00:40:30.438Well, I think that's what is the power behind sort of like micro-influences, and I only realized this recently how much more powerful you are as a micro-influencer if your following is engaged and loyal.
00:40:30.438 -->
00:40:43.835So we all know like the Kardashians are really big celebrities that will promote this, that and the other, and actually I bet their follow through rate like is really low compared to you know, because people are just like, oh, they're selling another thing.
00:40:43.929 -->
00:40:47.376And I realized this when I had a really, really big guest on my podcast.
00:40:47.376 -->
00:41:02.054She had that 1.2 million followers and in my mind I was like, oh my God, if even 1% of her followers listened to the podcast, and then my numbers would be bigger than ever, and even if 1% of that 1% joined my book club, I'd be a bloody millionaire.
00:41:02.054 -->
00:41:03.514And actually, what happened?
00:41:03.514 -->
00:41:04.476Nothing.
00:41:04.476 -->
00:41:10.016Having that person on my podcast with 1.2 million followers, I had no higher engagement than normal.
00:41:10.016 -->
00:41:13.478I had no higher sales than normal.
00:41:13.478 -->
00:41:14.561Nothing happened.
00:41:14.561 -->
00:41:20.697And I realized that's because the people that follow someone that's been on reality TV or someone that's, you know, Kim Kardashian.
00:41:20.697 -->
00:41:22.155I think I might follow Kim Kardashian.
00:41:22.155 -->
00:41:25.635Am I super invested in everything she says and would I buy everything that she promotes?
00:41:25.635 -->
00:41:26.478Hell no.
00:41:26.478 -->
00:41:34.358But if I'm following a small podcaster, you know I can think of several podcasters I follow who are, you know, under 100,000 followers.
00:41:34.358 -->
00:41:41.853If they suggest something, I'll probably go and buy it, because there is just that real connection, and I'm already thinking.
00:41:41.873 -->
00:41:43.157There's a podcast called Nachbut.
00:41:43.157 -->
00:41:46.914There are several things that she has recommended that I've gone and bought.
00:41:46.914 -->
00:41:53.858She's got like 26,000 followers on Instagram and I think that that is a lot more powerful than someone like Kim Kardashian doing a sponsored post.
00:41:53.858 -->
00:41:55.635How many people really click through?
00:41:55.635 -->
00:41:56.117I don't know.
00:41:57.429 -->
00:42:01.115Yeah, I mean what you're hitting on there is we follow people for different reasons.
00:42:01.115 -->
00:42:11.778So there's some people that I, you know you may follow just because they were kind of wild on that reality show you watched and you're just kind of like watching the drama.
00:42:11.778 -->
00:42:15.032You're not actually listening to what they have to say about the world.
00:42:15.032 -->
00:42:23.293There's people you may follow because they're really attractive, and so you're just trying to see what tips they have for being attractive.
00:42:23.293 -->
00:42:36.894And then there's other people you're paying attention to because you know they have excellent taste in books or they're really really good at something you're trying to learn, and those are the people who are going to have influence over purchasing decisions.
00:42:36.894 -->
00:42:47.077And so again, this kind of comes back once again to picking the right niche, the right thing for you to talk about with a podcast or any other.
00:42:47.077 -->
00:42:56.072Creation really allows you, opens up a lot of doors later on because you really identified an audience that you want to speak to.
00:42:56.969 -->
00:42:58.275Yeah, that's true.
00:42:58.449 -->
00:42:59.014One of the things.
00:42:59.014 -->
00:43:04.248I don't know how comfortable you are with this, so you feel free to shut it down and we can edit it out.
00:43:04.248 -->
00:43:18.186Of all of the different areas that you have monetized, can you talk a little bit maybe not in exact numbers, but like order of magnitude which of these have been most successful and which of them have been?
00:43:18.186 -->
00:43:22.588It's nice that you set it up, but they're not the main drivers of income.
00:43:24.422 -->
00:43:38.608So one of the books we did actually was called the One Thing, and it was all about how we dilute our energy and our focus over things, whereas if you actually look, quite often one thing will earn, say, 80% of your income or 80% of your results.
00:43:38.608 -->
00:43:58.403And so in the process of doing that book, I was like, right, I need to re-look at things, and I found that I was spending a lot of time creating content around my gratitude necklaces, whereas in reality my gratitude necklaces probably make me 800 pound, a thousand pound a month, whereas my book club is like my real, that is my main thing.
00:43:58.403 -->
00:43:59.206That was earning me.
00:43:59.206 -->
00:44:01.827I mean, right now I think it earns me 27,000 pounds a month.
00:44:02.280 -->
00:44:03.827And that's on a consistent basis.
00:44:04.099 -->
00:44:06.708It's been over 20,000 pounds a month for over a year now.
00:44:06.708 -->
00:44:19.648So that is my real, my main focus, my main priority, because it's very consistent and I think that that speaks for itself, that of course, people are always coming and going, but there's a real, constant fan base there.
00:44:19.648 -->
00:44:26.262There's constant members that are not leaving because they're seeing the changes in their lives and it is a real.
00:44:26.262 -->
00:44:26.965You know what?
00:44:26.965 -->
00:44:33.505It's such a bloody genius idea, even if I do say so myself, because everybody wants to read books, right, and it's a very different hobby.
00:44:33.505 -->
00:44:35.266One hobby is buying books.
00:44:35.266 -->
00:44:38.382It's a completely different hobby to actually read the books and to do them.
00:44:38.382 -->
00:44:40.246You know, they're two completely different things.
00:44:40.246 -->
00:44:45.550And so many people have good intentions that they want to read a self-development book, but we just don't.
00:44:45.550 -->
00:44:46.443And I was included.
00:44:46.443 -->
00:44:46.784I didn't.
00:44:46.784 -->
00:44:48.943I said I've got three young children, I haven't got time to read a book.
00:44:48.943 -->
00:45:00.684So, finding something that will capture people's imagination and they want to listen to the podcast, they want to be entertained, and so they will keep up with the book because they want to keep on with it it's bloody genius.
00:45:00.684 -->
00:45:01.907It's genius and it works.
00:45:01.907 -->
00:45:03.806So that really speaks for itself.
00:45:03.806 -->
00:45:06.827But then, yeah, things like the Goals Workshop.
00:45:07.360 -->
00:45:10.605That was incredible to do 50,000, I think I earned 50,000 pounds.
00:45:10.605 -->
00:45:11.628That was in like one month.
00:45:11.628 -->
00:45:14.409I released it two or three weeks before I actually did it.
00:45:14.409 -->
00:45:15.403So that was incredible.
00:45:15.403 -->
00:45:17.465But that's really like a one-off thing.
00:45:17.465 -->
00:45:25.027It would have been really tempting to do a new course every two or three months, but I don't want to do that Unless I feel called to talk about something.
00:45:25.027 -->
00:45:27.226I'm not going to do it just for the sake of it.
00:45:27.226 -->
00:45:29.027So the courses are incredible.
00:45:29.027 -->
00:45:34.012Something that I released recently is subliminal audios.
00:45:34.012 -->
00:45:36.581So this has gone wild, right See?
00:45:36.581 -->
00:45:38.126Have you heard about subliminals?
00:45:38.748 -->
00:45:38.887No.
00:45:39.661 -->
00:45:40.820Oh man, this is going to change a lot.
00:45:40.960 -->
00:45:47.518Are these like the tapes that you could get in the 90s on, like it would talk to you while you slept so that you could lose weight or quit smoking?
00:45:48.422 -->
00:45:50.690Yes, yes, but they were affirmations.
00:45:50.690 -->
00:45:52.547But do you know what they worked?
00:45:52.547 -->
00:45:53.844They actually do work.
00:45:53.844 -->
00:45:55.887There's a lot of scientific evidence behind them.
00:45:55.887 -->
00:45:57.847Google evidence of subliminals.
00:45:57.847 -->
00:45:58.481Do you know?
00:45:58.481 -->
00:45:59.686There are huge companies.
00:45:59.686 -->
00:46:05.166I think Apple used subliminals, mcdonald's used them in that advertising.
00:46:05.166 -->
00:46:05.889There's quite a few.
00:46:05.889 -->
00:46:09.208If you Google it, there's a lot of big, big brands that use them.
00:46:09.208 -->
00:46:14.360It's illegal in certain countries to use them in adverts now, but people do so.
00:46:14.842 -->
00:46:38.771Basically, they're audios that are an hour long and you can either hear the affirmations or you can have them subliminal, which is that the music is higher and you can't actually really hear them with, like, the naked ear, but they're going in subconsciously and I have them on creating wealth, perfect health, fertility, finding your soulmate, happiness, success, all these different things.
00:46:38.771 -->
00:46:46.184I've even got them for children to feel confident at school and be be well behaved, like going to bed eating their greens or that shit that you want your children to do.
00:46:46.184 -->
00:46:48.045And do you know what I released those?
00:46:48.045 -->
00:46:48.989They've gone wild.
00:46:48.989 -->
00:46:49.621They've sold.
00:46:49.621 -->
00:46:54.023They sell about 20,000 pounds a month and they are three pounds each.
00:46:54.987 -->
00:46:55.730You do the maths.
00:46:55.940 -->
00:47:08.425That's 20,000 pound a month and they are literally I can't actually work that out, but it's a lot of subliminals and that, again, is one of those things where number one, I wouldn't sell them if I genuinely didn't think that they worked and I didn't use them myself.
00:47:08.425 -->
00:47:12.250Number two, the people are the best advertising.
00:47:12.250 -->
00:47:14.748The people that buy them are my best advertising.
00:47:14.748 -->
00:47:18.284I get messages every single day saying you won't bloody believe it.
00:47:18.284 -->
00:47:19.644I bought your wealth subliminal.
00:47:19.644 -->
00:47:19.925The other day.
00:47:19.925 -->
00:47:21.184I've been listening to it every night.
00:47:21.184 -->
00:47:29.465Today I got a pay rise, or today I came into whatever, I came up with a business idea and I'm now you know whatever, and so I just screenshot them.
00:47:29.465 -->
00:47:39.911I make them anonymous, so I get rid of their name and whatever in their profile picture and I repost them on my stories with the link to it and the testimonials sell them.
00:47:39.911 -->
00:47:42.885I don't have to market them, I don't have to pay for advertising.
00:47:42.885 -->
00:47:46.509I don't have to do any of that stuff because the results speak for themselves.
00:47:46.509 -->
00:47:48.907So that has been an unexpected hit.
00:47:48.907 -->
00:47:50.061I love them.
00:47:51.500 -->
00:47:52.204That's incredible.
00:47:52.204 -->
00:48:00.923One of the ways we I mean the way we got connected is that you also started using BuzzFraher ads a few weeks ago and quickly became.
00:48:00.923 -->
00:48:06.829You definitely popped up on our radar once we started doing a payouts to your PayPal address.
00:48:06.829 -->
00:48:11.228So can you tell us a little bit about how you've used BuzzFraher ads?
00:48:12.172 -->
00:48:12.411Yes.
00:48:12.411 -->
00:48:17.447So when I discovered that they had started that, I was like oh my God.
00:48:17.628 -->
00:48:24.679Finally, because I have tried to get advertising on the podcast for the longest of time, with varying degrees of success.
00:48:24.679 -->
00:48:29.626So I have people email me and then it's a whole thing backwards and forwards how much they're going to charge.
00:48:29.626 -->
00:48:30.543It's just a whole thing.
00:48:30.543 -->
00:48:32.824I've tried that thing pod corn.
00:48:32.824 -->
00:48:34.409It's just a ball lake.
00:48:34.409 -->
00:48:36.186It's great for people that have the time.
00:48:36.186 -->
00:48:38.306I personally don't have the time for all of that.
00:48:38.306 -->
00:48:43.063What I loved about BuzzFraher ads is that they just get inserted in it's dynamic content.
00:48:43.063 -->
00:48:44.907I don't have to do a goddamn thing.
00:48:44.907 -->
00:48:48.784All I have to do is approve the adverts and say if they fit with my audience or not.
00:48:48.784 -->
00:48:51.327So I absolutely love it.
00:48:51.400 -->
00:48:54.766And then they just pay you, which is great, it's true passive income.
00:48:54.766 -->
00:48:55.784So I'm here for it.
00:48:55.784 -->
00:49:03.123I did have one or two people message saying oh, I really hate that you have an advert in the middle of your podcast and it's like you know what?
00:49:03.123 -->
00:49:04.969I'm creating all of this for free.
00:49:04.969 -->
00:49:10.987So if you are watching ITV and you're watching Love Island or something, you would have to sit through adverts.
00:49:10.987 -->
00:49:17.708So if you are not willing to support a single mum creating this content for free for you and you don't want to listen to a 30 second advert, shame on you.
00:49:17.708 -->
00:49:21.230So, yeah, we've got past that, though.
00:49:21.230 -->
00:49:24.344Now People are used to them now and, yeah, I absolutely love them.
00:49:24.344 -->
00:49:25.188I think it's a great idea.
00:49:25.188 -->
00:49:39.507But I was saying to Marshall, I do think it needs to be not other podcasts advertising, it needs to be brands Like imagine if you started to get brands small businesses, big businesses advertising you would be away.
00:49:39.507 -->
00:49:42.086You and me would be on a yacht in Ibiza.
00:49:43.902 -->
00:49:44.342There.
00:49:44.342 -->
00:49:48.817Maybe by the time this video is out, there will be brands in your bus for ads.
00:49:48.817 -->
00:49:52.789So that is absolutely the plan for the future.
00:49:53.581 -->
00:49:55.559I'm so excited he keeps promising it.
00:49:55.559 -->
00:49:56.382I'm waiting for it.
00:49:58.880 -->
00:50:03.525Can you, can you tell me a little bit about the actual workflow that you're using for bus for ads?
00:50:04.079 -->
00:50:06.547What have I got to share my secrets on how I'm the top earner?
00:50:06.547 -->
00:50:16.384So, yeah, when they first started, I got a little bit obsessed with it and I just keep a tab open, yeah, on my browser and just every single time.
00:50:16.384 -->
00:50:27.947And you have, I would check it like twice a day and every time a new advert came up I would check it and I would just accept it, because I think obviously a lot of the advertisers were podcasts or maybe people with quite small budgets.
00:50:27.947 -->
00:50:36.179So I quickly realized that if I'm one of the first people to click on it, I'm going to be the person that gets those ads because their budget is going to be gone in a certain number of days.
00:50:36.320 -->
00:50:38.445So I was quite like I was.
00:50:38.445 -->
00:50:42.126I was hot on like clicking yes, please, online.
00:50:42.126 -->
00:50:49.199And yeah, I think by the second month I don't $5,000 in advertising, which was incredible, to go from absolutely nothing.
00:50:49.199 -->
00:50:51.280I think the first month was like $1,500.
00:50:51.280 -->
00:50:53.007You know, $1,500.
00:50:53.007 -->
00:50:58.288That's not far off what I was earning in my first full time job, you know, 10 years ago when I started work.
00:50:58.288 -->
00:51:00.239So that is not a small amount of money.
00:51:00.239 -->
00:51:03.771And then, yeah, it went up to $5,000 and hopefully it will just continue to grow.
00:51:05.903 -->
00:51:35.400Yeah, you mentioned a second ago about trying to work out advertising yourself, and so one of the things that a lot of people are often weighing is when you do the advertisements all yourself, you source them, you go back and forth, you do a host read ad, you bake it into the episode, you can often get a higher CPM the actual amount paid per thousand listeners but you trade that off with, obviously, the work spent sourcing those ads.
00:51:35.400 -->
00:51:39.380How have you managed that trade off?
00:51:40.463 -->
00:51:42.469It is an absolute nightmare.
00:51:42.469 -->
00:51:42.931Do you know what?
00:51:42.931 -->
00:51:48.496I actually even hired a professional to try and get me sponsorship for the podcast and she failed.
00:51:48.496 -->
00:51:49.380She didn't get it.
00:51:49.380 -->
00:51:50.539She did not get it.
00:51:50.539 -->
00:51:58.018We could not find there's something about my podcast that, like I don't seem to get people wanting to sponsor or help.
00:51:58.018 -->
00:51:58.340I don't know.
00:51:58.340 -->
00:51:59.960We just found it really, really difficult.
00:51:59.960 -->
00:52:11.490They want to know your engagement rates, they want to know this, they want to know that it wasn't worth the amount of work for a one or two episode deal, what for me to record to show that it's just not worth it.
00:52:11.980 -->
00:52:20.405So I kind of gave up and my kind of midway thing was that I teamed up with a couple of brands to do affiliate marketing, and one of them was with you guys.
00:52:20.405 -->
00:52:28.009If I recommend Buzzsprout, I get I think it's $15 or 15 pounds, which is amazing Because, again, it's one of those things that I would naturally recommend.
00:52:28.009 -->
00:52:29.246I talk all the time about.
00:52:29.246 -->
00:52:31.079If you want to start a podcast, use Buzzsprout.
00:52:31.079 -->
00:52:36.505Like I'm an idiot and I managed to figure it out in my little 10 year old laptop, so you should be able to do it too.
00:52:36.505 -->
00:52:46.298So I did it with Buzzsprout, I do it with Hello Fresh, I do it with this other company that does vitamins, and that's a really easy way to do it.
00:52:46.298 -->
00:52:49.048So with Buzzsprout you can insert dynamic content.
00:52:49.119 -->
00:52:51.007So I make a pre-roll and a post-roll.
00:52:51.007 -->
00:52:54.766Don't know why you don't have a mid-roll, don't know, but I don't know if that's coming.
00:52:54.766 -->
00:53:03.349But I created Adverts one time on there that were for my not my own brand, but they were for these companies that I'd have affiliate marketing with.
00:53:03.349 -->
00:53:08.659Then I would put a link in the show notes down below and I would earn a decent amount of money from that.
00:53:08.659 -->
00:53:12.050You know I did that with Hello Fresh and I would earn about 700 pounds a month from doing that.
00:53:12.050 -->
00:53:17.351So that was a great kind of midway solution until Buzzsprout ads came up.
00:53:17.351 -->
00:53:19.686And I still do use those.
00:53:19.686 -->
00:53:25.385I still do use the pre-roll and the post-roll for both those affiliate marketing things but also for my own things.
00:53:25.385 -->
00:53:29.251You know, if I'm, I have a workshop that's a manifesting money workshop.
00:53:29.251 -->
00:53:37.184I have a whole spoken advert for that and I sometimes will put that as my pre-roll for a couple of weeks and, yeah, I see results from it.
00:53:38.628 -->
00:53:48.954Yeah, the nice thing about using dynamic content over baking things into episodes is back catalogs account for a lot of podcasts over half of their downloads.
00:53:49.376 -->
00:53:49.556Yeah.
00:53:50.105 -->
00:54:04.315And so if you're going to just say, hey, I'm going to do this course next week, well, that isn't accurate for half of the people who ever listened to it, because they're listening to an episode from two years ago and maybe it is something they'd be interested in.
00:54:04.315 -->
00:54:08.594But now they realize, oh, I've missed out on this opportunity.
00:54:08.594 -->
00:54:22.833When you're using dynamic content, especially when you're talking about timely things or advertisements, you can update the rates as your podcast changes sizes and you can let people know this is happening now.
00:54:22.833 -->
00:54:28.695So, no matter when you listen to this, it is true like this course is happening next week.
00:54:29.418 -->
00:54:32.793Yeah, and I think it stops your old episodes from feeling dated.
00:54:32.793 -->
00:54:41.672I think if you do have an advert that's like it's 2021 next week, so we've got a new year's deal for you, like nah, it just makes it feel super dated.
00:54:41.672 -->
00:54:43.952So, yeah, I think dynamic content is the way forward.
00:54:43.952 -->
00:54:48.077For that reason, but also just because, yeah, the sheer work involved.
00:54:48.077 -->
00:54:53.751I don't have the time to be going backwards and forwards and negotiating with people recording an advert.
00:54:53.751 -->
00:54:54.974Do they like it, do they not?
00:54:54.974 -->
00:54:56.096I ain't got time for that.
00:54:56.096 -->
00:54:57.498Insert that stuff in.
00:54:57.498 -->
00:54:59.891Don't let me know, give me the money.
00:55:03.592 -->
00:55:05.777Oh man, fritz, this has been an awesome interview.
00:55:05.777 -->
00:55:07.090I know that we're kind of coming up on.
00:55:07.090 -->
00:55:09.523The end of your time is before we go.
00:55:09.523 -->
00:55:14.096Is there anything, any advice you would give to a new podcast or somebody starting to create things online?
00:55:15.365 -->
00:55:20.896I would just say number one use Buzzsprout, because it honestly is that I genuinely touch wood.
00:55:20.896 -->
00:55:29.135I've never had a technical issue with Buzzsprout ever in my life and I deal with a lot of apps and technical difficulties.
00:55:29.135 -->
00:55:32.793My whole website has just gone down, so it's like to never have a technical issue.
00:55:32.793 -->
00:55:34.329That is absolutely incredible.
00:55:34.329 -->
00:55:35.849That's why I recommend it all the time.
00:55:35.849 -->
00:55:38.250But use somewhere like that.
00:55:38.250 -->
00:55:44.715Use the advertising, use the dynamic content things and, like I say, if you don't have sponsors for the show, there are ways around it.
00:55:44.784 -->
00:55:51.369You can start to earn even a small income by doing affiliate links, creating your own pre and post role things.
00:55:52.625 -->
00:55:59.092Create a podcast about something you're passionate about, because anything's exciting for the first week, the first three weeks.
00:55:59.092 -->
00:56:08.356But you need to have something that when you are on your deathbed and you're really ill or you've just got back from a three day bender in Ibethrin, you just want to sleep.
00:56:08.356 -->
00:56:18.934You've got to have something that you really want to talk about and it makes you get out of bed and record every single week, because if you're consistent over a period of time, it will be successful.
00:56:18.934 -->
00:56:19.554It will be.
00:56:19.554 -->
00:56:20.797You have to believe it will and it will.
00:56:20.797 -->
00:56:32.356So as long as you've got the belief and the consistency, buzzsprout is the perfect partner to take you there, because without that, like you say, the distribution, I could never get it out there.
00:56:32.356 -->
00:56:45.905And don't think that by DIYing it at home on your own it's ever going to hold you back, because look at me, number one in the UK for self development pretty much every week, and it's just me at home doing it with my 60 pound microphone on a 10 year old laptop.
00:56:45.905 -->
00:56:47.344Look at me living my life.
00:56:47.927 -->
00:56:48.489What am I doing?
00:56:48.489 -->
00:56:49.626So?
00:56:49.626 -->
00:56:50.530Yeah, just do it.
00:56:50.530 -->
00:56:58.713You don't know how much joy it brings me to hear you say all that, but also that you are using the Samsung Q2U, which we talk about all the time.
00:56:58.713 -->
00:56:59.987So many people.
00:56:59.987 -->
00:57:16.128They use the lack of specific tech to be the explanation for oh, this is why I'm being held back, when really so many of the top podcasters are using really basic and cheap and inexpensive tech.
00:57:16.128 -->
00:57:19.255All the stuff, the microphone I'm using right now.
00:57:19.255 -->
00:57:27.432This stuff is more expensive but it's not needed, so I love that you're doing it with the $60 microphone and the 10 year old laptop.
00:57:27.432 -->
00:57:28.074That's incredible.
00:57:28.594 -->
00:57:29.096Do you know what?
00:57:29.096 -->
00:57:30.378I'm such a technophobe?
00:57:30.378 -->
00:57:34.775I have a brand new MacBook that I'm using right now, but I can't switch from my 10 year old.
00:57:34.775 -->
00:57:35.865I can't.
00:57:35.865 -->
00:57:39.974I can't because I'm such a technophobe, so because you guys told me to buy this microphone, that's what I'm doing.
00:57:39.974 -->
00:57:41.670I'm still using it two years on.
00:57:41.670 -->
00:57:44.268But that is genuinely what I loved about it is.
00:57:44.268 -->
00:57:51.335It's so easy to give up when you hit a thing in the road where you're like, oh, I can't figure this out, I can't do it.
00:57:51.335 -->
00:58:00.952But you guys did genuinely make it so easy for me and I was saying that to Marshall, like I'm so, so thankful because without you lot, I couldn't have done this and it has truly changed my life.
00:58:00.952 -->
00:58:03.974So anyone listening can do this as well.
00:58:03.974 -->
00:58:06.469You don't need a studio, you don't need anything.
00:58:06.469 -->
00:58:07.947You can just do this from home.
00:58:07.947 -->
00:58:11.335And, yeah, do it and use my referral code.
00:58:11.335 -->
00:58:11.956Put it in the link.
00:58:14.050 -->
00:58:14.411We'll do it.
00:58:14.411 -->
00:58:20.275If you're watching this on YouTube or you're listening to the podcast, we will put your referral link down.
00:58:20.335 -->
00:58:21.498Oh my God, will you?
00:58:21.498 -->
00:58:23.809Yes, oh my God, let's see how many I get.
00:58:23.809 -->
00:58:28.496This is interest, oh this is great.
00:58:28.625 -->
00:58:37.813Thank you so much for coming on and chatting, podcasting and creating and just everything, for being really open, also about the monetization.
00:58:37.813 -->
00:58:52.065I think that's an area that's really nerve wracking for a lot of new podcasters, because we see some of the big shows doing it and we know early on like it's hard to figure out.
00:58:52.065 -->
00:58:53.811What does this look like for me in the future?
00:58:53.811 -->
00:58:55.108Can I ever quit my job?
00:58:55.108 -->
00:58:56.889Can I ever take this full time?
00:58:56.889 -->
00:59:00.333So thank you so much for all of the advice and everything you gave us today.
00:59:00.875 -->
00:59:01.195Thank you.
00:59:01.195 -->
00:59:03.304Actually, do you know what one thing I've just remembered is?
00:59:03.304 -->
00:59:17.134I remember in your series of videos where you are like how to start a podcast, one of the things that I never forget this you said never start a podcast if you want to use it to earn money and like make it your job, because the vast majority of people don't.
00:59:17.134 -->
00:59:19.438And guess what bitches I have.
00:59:20.059 -->
00:59:20.981I always remember that.
00:59:21.001 -->
00:59:21.844You're really wrong.
00:59:21.963 -->
00:59:38.039Yeah, there's too many people who get it, who have been sold a course on starting a podcast that claims day one you'll be monetizing, and I just can't help to.
00:59:38.039 -->
00:59:42.253I can't accept telling somebody something that may not be true for them.
00:59:42.806 -->
00:59:49.815And so to promise somebody, hey, go ahead and do this, you'll be able to quit your job, it's just dishonest, yeah.
00:59:49.815 -->
01:00:00.556But what is true is creating anything, even if it's for a small audience, is good for your soul, like it's good for you to be creating things and to put it in your voice out into the world.
01:00:00.556 -->
01:00:13.976Even if it's just for you to learn what is meaningful to me and to be working on it, that is still valuable, even if it doesn't turn into hundreds of thousands of dollars a year.
01:00:14.605 -->
01:00:15.891So it doesn't have to be your job.
01:00:15.891 -->
01:00:17.411It could, like you say, it can just be your passion.
01:00:17.411 -->
01:00:29.293You know, we did a book called Working Hard Hardly Working by Grace Beverly and she says that your income doesn't have to be related to your passion and actually you can work your micro passions into your income.
01:00:29.293 -->
01:00:38.807So say, for example, if you had a pet shop, right, and that's your living, it's been in your family for three generations and that's how you earn your income, you really can't quit it.
01:00:38.807 -->
01:00:44.675But you love podcasting or you love whatever, there's nothing to stop you working micro passions into that existing job.
01:00:44.675 -->
01:00:50.992So you could say to your boss or whatever you could say how do you feel about me starting a podcast about working in a pet shop and about all the different pets?
01:00:51.032 -->
01:00:52.306we have and about do you know what I mean?
01:00:52.306 -->
01:00:55.135Special animal care, or you could start YouTube shorts on that.
01:00:55.135 -->
01:00:58.173So yeah, like you say, you don't have to turn this into your living.
01:00:58.173 -->
01:01:01.755You can always insert your little micro passions into your existing job.
01:01:01.755 -->
01:01:03.268It's basically for anyone.
01:01:03.268 -->
01:01:04.333It's just try it.
01:01:04.333 -->
01:01:05.206It's a great laugh.
01:01:07.784 -->
01:01:09.472Thank you so much for spending this time with us.
01:01:09.472 -->
01:01:14.456I really appreciate it and hope that everyone who watches this just gets as much as I did.
01:01:14.456 -->
01:01:15.748So thank you so much.
01:01:16.210 -->
01:01:19.427Yes, thank you, thank you.
