Cody (Comicbookcody): how the fuck are you doing interest on these anymore? It's been two months. I feel like has it been two months? I think it might have been two months. ⁓ let's see if it shows me. It's so bad that ⁓ on Spotify, our podcast is no longer one of my most listened to podcasts. ⁓ February thirteenth. So we ooh, we are past the three month point. Jesus, I literally thought we did one a few months ago. ⁓ Hello everybody.
Mike: It's been s it's been so long. Been a while, man. Cheese. Jeez.
Cody (Comicbookcody): And welcome back to the Brew Review Podcast. I'm one of your hosts, Cody, alongside my best friend, Laz. How you been, bud?
Mike: I've been good, man. How are you?
Cody (Comicbookcody): I'm doing good, doing a lot better. we've been gone for a little minute, a little hot minute, you know. ⁓ Laz is drinking again. I'm alive, so that's good. That you defin you were you you were making jokes about ⁓ how many beers to s to snow plow or something like that. Yeah.
Mike: Yeah, yeah. I not drinking last week? No, I was I've always been drinking. That's right. Geez. It has been a while. What where have we been? What have we been doing?
Cody (Comicbookcody): ⁓ I think we both needed a break. But then that bro break got like prolonged by some bullshittery.
Mike: I have one thing to blame for the break. And that's the nin the ninja turtle set.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Uh-huh. Yeah, it w so the Ninja Turtles that came out, we were all like super hyped for it. Like all everyone in our fr in our ⁓ group chat were like super hyped for it. But then like we like we didn't we weren't playing as often and then like I don't know. I don't know. And wh why me?
Mike: I blame you. I blame you. Cause you're always like, ⁓ I'm dying, I can't. ⁓ I'm so sick, I'm dying, I can't. It's like the same excuse over and over again.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Yes. So for the past like month I was dealing with a really bad sickness. ⁓ started out with like I just kept coughing like endlessly. And like you can't really record podcasts and or, you know, enjoy yourself when you're constantly coughing. And like it kept getting like it would go away for like a day, it'd come back it'd come back. Go away, go come back, go away, come back. And ⁓ I ended up in the ER one night. And they were finally like, hey, you should go see ⁓ this ear node and throat doctor and get scoped. And I went, Cool, I saw an ears node and throat doctor like last week. He didn't do that shit to me. What the hell? ⁓ turns out I had an infection like in my like throat. And so anything I ate or drank would hit it, irritated, I would cough, I'd get sick, and it was just a cycle. That's all I would it would just keep going and going. Like it would like, I guess like start to heal, and then I'd eat something that it rubs it the wrong way. And I get sick again. I dealt with that for a month. And so like that kind of like put me down for the count. I just I couldn't talk. Yeah. I yeah, I I played a lot of World of Warcraft in the past like two months. Because I just couldn't I can't talk. Like it was just it was impossible. Like I was like, and like I think I at one point Justin, our friend Justin was like, You don't play Overwatch anymore. And it's like, I literally cannot speak. If you want me to sit, yeah.
Mike: Yeah. Yeah, you weren't even playing video games. Or at least group video games, you know. I'm in the hospital.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Do you want me to sit in the cuck chair of Overwatch and not talk while you guys pog and let's go?
Mike: Just pretend it's Rocket League and just ⁓ ty text only. Ugh I got a fucking ban in Rocket League currently. By the way, I'm I'm glad that you're feeling better. I'm glad that now you're all better. On the mend. Your throat is ⁓ ready to take a beating. You know, you're able to eat or drink whatever you want.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Ty type of a thing. Yeah. That's right, I remember you talking about that. Thank you, thank you. I appreciate it. Hell yeah, brother. And then ⁓ somewhere in there you took a couple of vacations, I think. You went somewhere.
Mike: I yeah, I went away. I went down south, low country, down south down South Carolina, Kakalaki. I was down there for a week. I just I've been busy too, man. It was ⁓ just kind of like compounding errors of going away, you being sick, stuff popping up at work, and then all like in between all this, our friend groups like I feel like we really haven't gotten to play that much.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Yeah. ⁓ that's what it was. Yeah, yeah.
Mike: And then man, I wanted to like the Turtles set so much, and it just nothing inspired me. And then Strix Saven came out and like man, I could not care less about that set. There was there was not a single card in that set that's you know piqued my interest. I just honestly did not care about that set. So it's kind of hard to make a podcast about building decks and improving decks when the last two sets don't really have anything that you're
Cody (Comicbookcody): Yeah. I was like Yeah.
Mike: You're gonna add, you know?
Cody (Comicbookcody): Yeah. It's crazy 'cause like so like Lorwyn, so that last episode was a grub. I I went and looked. And like super hyped about Lorwin, loved it. I really love the turtle set. Like I l I've got the pre con, love the pre con. That was a lot of fun. the like reception to it online kinda like it just bummed me out. And so like I was like not into Strix Haven at all. Like they were showing stuff for Strix Haven and I was like, It's a cool fucking card, but like
Mike: Mm-hmm.
Cody (Comicbookcody): I just don't care. Like it just like bummed me out. ⁓ I think I also just a bit of burnout. Like just like, man, there's a lot going on. And I just like with everything in life and then just this. ⁓ Madeline and I got kinda into collecting Pokemon cards a little bit, and so like I had to like ⁓ so I was doing that with her and just yeah, like Strict Haven like just did not spark any hype in me. I'm pretty excited for your Marvel. I think that's gonna be like a really fun set, and I'm so looking forward to the Hobbit.
Mike: Lame Boo. Yeah. Yeah.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Like, yeah, I I love the Lord of the Ring set so much and I feel like this Hobbit set looks really good. I I have one critique of this year. I feel like they were like, Hey, did you realize we could put two fucking cards on one card by giving everything adventure and prepare and all this bullshit? And it's like, brother, chill the fuck out with it. Just give me a regular bitch ass card. Like, ⁓ my god.
Mike: Okay. ⁓ all right. Mm-hmm. I think it's just there's too much. There's too much going on with the cards. They're pushing out too many cards, too many mechanics, too many flip cards, reverse cards, you know, adventure cards. It's like, look, it's hard enough to keep track of all the new sets and cards coming out. And now you have cards that do multiple things that, you know, on the same card. It's my my old man brain can't take it. Back in my day, Sarah Angel was a four four flying ninja vigilance, and we liked it like that.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Like don't get wrong, like for The Hobbit, adventures make sense because the whole thing is he's going on an adventure. Hell yeah. Perfect. We just got Strix Haven where they had like all these like dual prepare cards, like there's ceiling song on cars, there's brainstorm on cars, there's rampant growth on other car and it's like that's just a lot, you know? Like I just don't don't need all that. ⁓ it it also just kind of feels like it like
Mike: Yeah.
Cody (Comicbookcody): It homogenizes commander where it's like, Well, why would I run rampant growth when I can instead have a creature with rampant growth on it? And it's like, What what are we fucking doing? Like, I wanna have like some variety in my decks. So now it just feels like, you know.
Mike: I I did the ⁓ the thing that everyone complains about where I didn't actually read the article or watch the video. I just saw the headline and I formulate my own opinions on it. And it was a ⁓ command zone video and the headline was just was just ⁓ singleton format is dying. Like and I didn't watch the video 'cause I just I can't be bothered to watch a forty five minute video or hour and a half long video. But
Cody (Comicbookcody): So Yeah. Fair enough, fair enough.
Mike: You know, it it kind of like the first thing it made me think of is like you said, there's all these creatures now that have the spells on it. So it's like you could have two rampant growths in your deck and you can have two cyclonic rifts in your deck. Like they've just kind of you know, or just taking cards that aren't even upgrades or downgrades, just side grades and you could just have all those in there. It's it kind of makes ⁓ makes Commander a little bit more boring, in my opinion, that everyone can everyone's just gonna be running the same, you know, the same set. of cards and then the same set of creatures that have the same set of ramp cards on there or removal spells on there. ⁓ I don't know. I kind of I don't I don't care for that parti in particular, but I'm a grumpy old man and who knows.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Yeah.
Mike: He has stepped away. I think I heard a little fart before he stepped away, so he might be shitting his brains out. Or actually he might have just sharted. Because I think I heard the the microphone pick that up. It was like a very slight little shart. And then he put his finger up and said, Hold on, hold on, hold on. And he ran out of the room, holding both hands over his over his bottom, over the back of his shorts. It's bad. Hey, what's up?
Cody (Comicbookcody): Could hear talking on our porch and then Henry starts freaking out. I'm like, Who the fuck is on our porch? This little kid rode his fucking tricycle up to our porch and got on the porch. And then mom's like, Come on, Mijo, come on. And I'm like, what are you fucking doing? Get off my porch. What the fuck? Henry's like freaking out. I'm like, I'm like, calm down, calm down. ⁓ my god. Okay. ⁓ what time was that? Like ten minutes? Okay, sure. ⁓ my god. All right, sorry. What were you saying?
Mike: Yeah, get off my porch. You should just that's when you need like a gun. Just come out with a gun. Get off my porch. I just stuff. I forget. Homogenation of Commander format. Grumpy old man.
Cody (Comicbookcody): homogenation of commander. ⁓ all right. Three, two, one. I feel like Command Zone has released like a few videos like that recently, talking about like the singleton format dying and things like that. And yeah, it's just like I don't know. And like it's not as big as an issue for us, 'cause I feel like me and you, like, we will for you and I, I apologize. Bad grammar on my part. Fucking southern southern me showing. You and I I think like we try to have variety in our decks, but like for Mike and for sometimes Nick, like they're gonna be like
Mike: Mm, mm, mm. Mm-hmm.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Hell yeah, another rampant grove, let's fucking go. And I'm like, come on man, like fuck.
Mike: Yeah. They they are the people that Moxfield has built that feature the ⁓ like the package. Like, all right, ⁓ you're building a ⁓ a green black deck. You should pick your Golgari ramp package and be like, all right, these twenty cards get slotted in instantly. And then I don't know.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Yeah. Exactly. And so it's just like I don't I don't want to play against someone who's got twenty fucking rampant growths and they have seventeen lands before I have five. Like fuck.
Mike: Well, it gets boring too. Part of the reason I like Commander is because it lets you showcase the lesser seen cards or the not as you know, not as played cards and stuff. And that's, you know, when I first started playing Magic and I was playing standard, it got to a point where I was building decks. I'm like, I have a 60 card deck, and twenty-eight or thirty of it is lands, and then everything else is like four of this card, four of this card, four of this card.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Mm-hmm.
Mike: It's like so my deck's like seven cards. You know, just different different iterations of seven cards. I'm like, that's kinda boring. And then someone's like, No, Commander, it's ninety nine cards and each one's different. It's like, okay. Yeah, I can get behind that. So I just don't know why people would be like, Okay, well I'm playing I'm playing blue. So it needs these seven counter spells and these five draw spells. And it's like, All right, well, it's a little boring then.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Yeah. Yeah, and so yeah, I I think with a lot of that stuff lately, like I get it. Like the prepared thing was like kinda interesting. It is an interesting idea. I just wish they wouldn't have just been it wouldn't just been straight up, Hey, this is another spell that's already in the game on tacked onto a creature. 'Cause it's just like, why would I not just play that? You know? ⁓ or have both copies in the deck. Yeah.
Mike: Mm-hmm. Or have both. Well that's the thing. I think that's what people are gonna do is just have both. Like why not just have two rampant gross in your deck? Along with the three visits and ⁓ you know, nature's lore and ⁓ or whatever the other card is.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Yeah. ⁓ Yeah. And like Yeah. I'm sure it's like a cool card for like standard because like some of these cards are older cards that just aren't aren't aren't being printed anymore. Like there was like was it was like the po not the power nine, but ⁓ like ancestral recall and like ⁓ come a couple other ones and it's like that's that's kind of interesting when you do that, but like if it's a card it's like printed pretty regularly. Like rampant growth goes in every green commander precon that's been made. Source of plowship. It's like that's just so like what are we doing?
Mike: Yeah. Swords to ploughshares. Mm-hmm.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Like why are like give me something new and exciting. It it and I don't want to say lazy 'cause like I'm not a fucking designer for cards. Like it's I don't I don't got the fucking coolness to do that, you know? But like it feels like what the fuck are we doing? That's all. So yeah. but yeah, Strix Haven for me, just like I there's some cards I need to go back and buy. Like tons of Ardbird cards because he cares about Orzov cards. So like the silver cool charm, cool, that's a new removal spell for me. Hell yeah.
Mike: Mm-hmm.
Cody (Comicbookcody): ⁓ but like I really haven't really sat down and looked at that set too hard because I've been like, I don't know, man. I just need to I need a break, you know.
Mike: Yeah. Well, I I wasted so much money buying ⁓ buying collector boosters for Ninja Turtles too. I'd never buy collector boosters. I never
Cody (Comicbookcody): You you and Mike were going hard. Y'all were trying to get some pixel cards. It worked out for you, didn't it? Got a little Yeah, you traded for the the splinter.
Mike: No, I traded for this. My I I finally got one pixel card and it sucks. Splinter. It's like the worst creature. ⁓
Cody (Comicbookcody): He I I liked playing I so I had the precon and what I've been doing I played it a few times with y'all and I I think I might have played it once with some other people. So what I do is I Leonardo is always either the f commander or the here's in a half shell, but I'll roll a D six and like I have assigned each of the partners and then the here's in a half shell to six. And I did that twice. I had Splinter the first time. I think I got Mikey the second time, but like
Mike: Mm-hmm.
Cody (Comicbookcody): I thoug I th I thought Spongebob was fun because it was like, ⁓ when stuff leaves the board, I get tokens. ⁓ yeah, cool. ⁓ Mutagen tokens, turns out pretty decent. Some would say blood than blood tokens.
Mike: Yeah. Mm, who knew? See I looked on our Discord, that's the last thing I did was make fun of blood tokens like three months ago. Like and that was it. ⁓ no, my I I went hard into the turtle set trying to get pixel art cards. Really wanted it. My friends wanted them, my cousins w like we were just trying. And ⁓ at the end of it, out of everyone that I know that was buying lots of packs, there's only been one pixel card that was pulled, and it was a splinter card.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Bo elegance.
Mike: I ended up trading some other cards for it. And you know, I was with my cousin. And so he was like, All right, so now you're gonna build that as a commander. And it's like No, 'cause it kinda sucks as a commander. It's it's not like a very good commander card, but it has partner. It's like, ⁓ so just partner it up. Like, I'm not gonna have a I'm not gonna have a Pixel art commander and have him partnered up with a basic ass turtle, like
Cody (Comicbookcody): Ha ha. Well then you need the other pixel card. Bitch.
Mike: So now I just have to keep on buying these packs and hoping that I pull one of the other turtles that are pixel art just so I can partner it.
Cody (Comicbookcody): You you could, you know, buy the actual cards. It might be cheaper in the long run. I I haven't checked the prices on those in a while.
Mike: It's like maybe. No, I'm pull it up right now. Just 'cause I'm curious 'cause yeah, that's the situation I'm in where it's like I'll build this deck. I don't care what what car it is. Any Pixel art turtle that has partner that I pull, I will be building that deck. I I have all my surge foil ugly pizza swamps ready to go and a couple of other, you know, land yeah.
Cody (Comicbookcody): I love the pizza land so much.
Mike: I have a bunch of other ones like I'm ready to build the deck whenever I find out what the deck is, but I I'm not gonna pair it up with with some garbage, with some Bush League garbage cards.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Yeah. Hey man, for a hundred and eighty four dollars, you could get Donatello and do a Demir token deck.
Mike: Mm-hmm. See, like that's the thing, they're so expensive.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Yeah, these are these prices are wild.
Mike: Yeah, that's how much is mine? Like one sixty, I think, is ⁓ Shredder. Or probably drop down or
Cody (Comicbookcody): I think a wonderful thing that happened to me, right, as this like kinda hype for the pixel art cards happened, ⁓ my car started shitting itself and I I literally am going to Saturday to potentially buy a new car. ⁓ so I was like, Well I cannot spend money like on Ninja Turtles. ⁓ I was like barely spending money on Pokemon cards and that was too much for me at the time. so I was like, Fuck yeah, I can go completely miss this and be okay. ⁓ But yeah, I those pixel card pixel art cards were fucking dope. And like I wish I wish they weren't so expensive or rare because like yeah, they would be really cool to own. But it's just like it's at this point, it's up there with like there was the secret lair minskin boo that I I remember we talked about. It's like there was a chance for me to buy it when it was like a hundred and fifty and I'm shooting myself in the foot by not doing it, 'cause now it's like five hundred.
Mike: Mm-hmm. Yeah, like that's the thing. Michelangelo the heart, three hundred and eighty dollars.
Cody (Comicbookcody): So Yeah, Jesus Christ. ⁓ that's some also we're this is just catch up time with Cody and Lance. That's some other bullshit. Fuck secret lairs. Like, I don't know if I'm buying. I you cannot tell me that we're not going back to printed demand because it gets people their cards quicker, yada yada, yada. And then everything is fucking delayed, and then you got bots buying up, goblin decks, and like just a bunch of bullshit.
Mike: Huh. I didn't even attempt for the goblin deck.
Cody (Comicbookcody): I was like so happy we were flying that day. I was like I like, ⁓ I don't stress about even thinking about doing it. Like I'm I'm stuck on a fucking plane for the next three hours, thank God. 'Cause
Mike: People are are are already getting theirs. And I still haven't gotten my ⁓ dwarf fortress and ⁓ my little pony secret layer.
Cody (Comicbookcody): ⁓ the gab. Yeah. Yeah, exactly. Like they fucking like you can't say, ⁓ we're doing it so you get your stuff faster and then no one gets their stuff faster. It's stupid. Like I it's just I don't know. I I don't really I know I'm gonna say it and then like in like two months they're gonna be like, Here's a bloodborne secret layer and I'll be like, Fuck, well here I go again. But like it's just god damn guys, like come on. Do do better.
Mike: Yeah. Yeah, is is that the one that would draw you? It doesn't take much to draw me. I bought Dwarf Fortress Secret Lane. I've never even heard of that game, but
Cody (Comicbookcody): Yeah, y I was like when you told me you bought it, I was like, Why?
Mike: One for Terror of the Peaks and two, I made a statement on this podcast, and I have to stand by it where I said, I don't care about the art on cards. If the functionality is good, I will play it. The cards can be blank. And if the text is good and fits in the deck, I'm playing it. So then the dwarf fortress cards came out and I'm like, I use some of these cards in my decks, put my money where my mouth is, I will be throwing these cards in my deck.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Mm. Mm-hmm.
Mike: with just the most obscure artwork possible. And then my little pony was just that was just fun. That that was for me. That I'd like to do a little something for me. That's just for me. They'll make me smile. Not yet. No, they didn't get delivered yet. Once they are though. No, that's in case my daughter ever plays.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Fair enough. Yeah. That's for me that's just for me. You're a brony, Les? Little brony action over there? Are they in universe or are they like the the last ones they did for S Extra Life? Really? I must have missed those. I don't remember seeing ⁓
Mike: In Universe. Yeah. Yeah, I think it was like what card was it? Was it Source of Plowshares?
Cody (Comicbookcody): Well, probably knowing them. Nor that are arcane signal. ⁓
Mike: I think so.
Cody (Comicbookcody): But yeah, I just I just watching all that it's it's been crazy 'cause like I haven't been commenting on much on like Blue Sky Twitter, whatever the fuck it is. ⁓ but I g I I I see everything and I'm like, ⁓ my god, what are we doing? ⁓ so yeah.
Mike: Arcane Signet Soul Ring Generous Gift and Reconnaissance ⁓ Reconnaissance Mission. It would have been better if it was Reconnaissance, the white card that I use in ⁓ what do I use that? I use that in the warrior deck there. Not Zirgo. Is it Zirgo? It Zirgo.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Calling me shocked. That's a good one. ⁓ okay, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, I think it is, there you go. The one that pulls him out of combat. Yeah, that's a good one. I think I had that I had that at a deck for a little while. I don't know if I still have it. ⁓ What else has happened in the world of magic? I don't really think that's really there was a MagicCon where they announced a bunch of cards, but I mean I don't really know how much we talked about.
Mike: Yeah. Yeah, I don't know. Next set's Marvel. Looks cool. well, real quick, just so I can close these tabs on my window here. two cards that I've pulled out for purchase to upgrade decks from the last two sets, Strix Haven and Ninja Turtles, are both for Grizzmold. I don't know how that happens. Whenever I a new set comes out and I go through and I'm like, ⁓ okay, I have fifteen decks.
Cody (Comicbookcody): But but next up is Marvel and Looks very good.
Mike: Only cards I see are good for one of the decks, which is honestly not really needing too much help. But the ⁓ that that planeswalker, Professor Delian Fay, the Golgari ⁓ planeswalker, that's gonna be real good in Griswold. Have to pick that up. And ⁓ Ninja Turtles, I'm I'm trading creeps, I think, or buddy creeps for Super Shredder. Yeah, whenever another permanent leaves a battlefield for the one one counter on Super Shredder, that's gonna go hard in Grisvolt. That's gonna go
Cody (Comicbookcody): ⁓ yeah. Yeah, that's a good one. Okay. Mm. Yeah yeah. That's a good one. ⁓ yeah.
Mike: That's gotta go real good. He's got the full art foil version. I'm gonna trade him ⁓ Allosaurus Shepherd for it. Cause I don't use that in any decks and he wants it for his what's his stupid ⁓
Cody (Comicbookcody): Okay. Look at you. Okay. Is elf Fozier?
Mike: Yeah, Vogel Deck. I part of me is like, Don't give ⁓ don't give it to ⁓
Cody (Comicbookcody): Don't do it. Don't trade him. I'll send you one. I'll buy it. I'll buy it for you and I'll send it to you. ⁓ Yeah, I mainly just Arbert for me for Strixhaven. ⁓ turtles. Turtles I got a few cards from, but they were mainly like ⁓ there's that Madam, whatever. She's a demon. When you can pay life ⁓ to put 1 1 counters on creatures when they enter. I got her for Tavash because.
Mike: Okay.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Since I'm gaining so much life in that deck, and if I can give my creatures life link, I can then like, you know, pay a bunch of life to make a giant demon bigger and then swing with the demon that has lifelink. And it's like, you know, it just gets really good. ⁓
Mike: Mm-hmm.
Cody (Comicbookcody): I'm sure like in a few months I'll sit down and look at Strix Haven and be like, that's actually a pretty cool commander. I probably build that. ⁓
Mike: Well, when you find the card, you let me know. I don't know. People listen to this. If you've got a card in the Strix Haven that's like been hidden in it, you know, hidden it off for you or something, let us know. But yeah, but I don't know. The only cool cards I seen were the ones that reprinted old cards onto new cards. You know, it's like, ⁓ okay. I don't really need that.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Yeah. The only one that I was like, ⁓ that is that's busted. There's a it's like a loot. It's an artifact. It's like two and a red and a blue. And it makes your lands tap for two mana, but you can only cast instants and sorceries. I was like, well that's ⁓ that's just a spell slinger staple in every deck going forward, like, god damn. ⁓ so yeah, that's that's the only one that's like off the top of my head I can think that thing fucks. ⁓ I played that and no, I actually think about it. I played the Quintorious Precon. The one time I like in my
Mike: Okay. Mm-hmm. You did. You played it once.
Cody (Comicbookcody): And ⁓ I was sick at the time and I was like but I was still playing it on ⁓ Moxfield and I had fun with it. I thought I thought it was kind of fun. I I jokingly hinted to my sister, like, you should buy me that. ⁓ where she was at a Walmart and like should send me a picture of the magic cards and I was like, If you're looking for a birthday present, here you go. ⁓ I don't know yet. Find out tomorrow when I go visit them for my actual birthday. Which hey, we're recording this day for my birthday, so this will come out the day after my birthday. So
Mike: Yeah. It did well too. Did she? ⁓ Mazletov. ⁓ yeah, yeah, yeah. They have to how old do you turn it?
Cody (Comicbookcody): Thirty two old fucking man. I was driving home talking to Madeline on the phone and she goes, I'm just I'm so old and I'm like, Shut the fuck up. You're like three years younger than me. Shut the fuck up. Yeah. ⁓ this was ⁓ man. So this is just tangents inside chats the fucking podcast today. So we went to the California last week so Madeline could get a tattoo on her leg. It was her birthday gift to herself. ⁓
Mike: Thirty two, old man. Old man. Starts going downhill now. ⁓ it should that's
Cody (Comicbookcody): I got to chill out in a hotel room and play World of Warcraft for three days. It was majestic. ⁓ it's a good treat. ⁓ so we took a bunch of pictures. We went on hiking one of the days before she got started getting tattoos. And we went hiking and we're taking pictures in this like on this trail, like I'm doing the as I told Laz, getting into my old man's stage. I'm bird watching. ⁓ turns out if it's just like real life Pokemon. I'm taking fucking pictures of fucking real life Pokemon, you know.
Mike: Yeah, that's a good treat. Yeah. You're playing Pokemon Snap. That's what it is.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Yeah, exactly. Exactly. I fucking took well. I will have to send you some my bird pictures. I think I did send you a few, but I'll send you some more. I cook some fucking grade A pictures. and what were some of the pictures we took of was of her engagement ring? Well Madeline's very and I are very private, so we don't like really post a lot about our social lives online too much. So she's posted all these pictures though of our trip, and it's the first time she's posted the engagement ring. And so all these people think we got engaged in California.
Mike: Ha ha.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Les would you like to know what the fuck I'm wearing the day of our fucking tri hike? I'm in basketball shorts and a gray hoodie, and I look like I look like fucking Adam Sandler. And I'm like, everyone's gonna think I fucking proposed to you looking like that. Like what the fuck? ⁓ So yeah, that was a a lovely like everyone's like, congratulations, and I'm like, fuck.
Mike: What nerdy ass shit are you wearing? Ugh. Ha Fantastic. Yeah. You just gotta do your best Adam Sandler impersonation. Who really need to be do
Cody (Comicbookcody): I should have fucking taken the sh I should have taken the Yeah. I should have fucking took the hoodie off. ⁓ but it was a good time. ⁓
Mike: I'm more surprised that you own basketball shorts.
Cody (Comicbookcody): ⁓ that's all I wear, really. Not basketball shorts. They're like ⁓ athletic shorts, you know. They like ⁓ they're from like old Navy. That's all I wear. I don't I don't know who I'm wearing right now. That are khaki shorts. Khaki shorts, but I really I've really gone on to the the sh like the athletic short game 'cause I'm too fat, man. I gotta like I gotta be gotta be sple, you know. ⁓
Mike: Mm-hmm. Still surprised. Really? Lounge? Or what shorts? ⁓ khaki short, okay. Too fair. Yeah, I ⁓ I can't wear those outside the house. Basketball shorts or athletic shorts. If I'm wearing ⁓ I'll like I'll s no, yeah, that's it. There's too much too much swang in the in between the legs as I'm as I'm walking. No, I I don't know, I just can't. I'm I'm weird. I also don't wear sweatpants out of the house, so
Cody (Comicbookcody): Dick too big? ⁓ fuck. Too much hog. Really? Hmm. I man, it's this is just such such a fucking train wreck of podcast. Good veg five. ⁓ yeah, it's like sweatpants I can't I I feel weird outside of the house in. ⁓ because like I don't know, like they just I I just don't I feel weird. I feel like I I that's like my line where I'm like I can't do it. Like like I if I'm like running to Dollar General, maybe 'cause you know what? Those people accept me there. If I'm running to like a target
Mike: It's good magic podcast. Hey, we're like we gotta record something. Mm. Maybe. Those are my people.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Or a fucking bedbathing beyond. Can't do it. Can't be seen there. Yeah, gotta class it up, you know? ⁓ but yeah. ⁓ back to Magic Talk. ⁓ Marvel looking really good. Hobbit, I'm like
Mike: ⁓ you got you gotta class it up for Tarjay, you know, that's the thing. Any anything caught your eye from Marvel yet?
Cody (Comicbookcody): The Vision. One of the visions they showed off recently. It's the four mana, two five, flying vigilance. Whenever you cast a non-creature spell, choose one that hasn't been chosen this turn. Solar Beam, the vision gains double strike. ⁓ It gains indestructible or technopathy draw a card. ⁓ I think this would be my swords of X and Y deck, because it's colorless. So you can put all the swords on it.
Mike: Yeah. Mm-hmm. Okay. Mm-hmm.
Cody (Comicbookcody): And then it's immune to everything. ⁓ and I bought a bunch of those swords. I th I'm sorry, did you say an Ultron deck or Voltron? Voltron, Ultron There we go. ⁓ The Vision is one of my my favorite characters. Yeah. I'll spell it with a V. Yeah. Yeah. ⁓ Voltr the Vision is like one of my favorite characters. Like I love the WandaVision show. I love the vision in the movies. I love the comics. ⁓
Mike: You got your Voltron Ultron deck? Voltron Ultron. Just call it your Voltron deck, but you know, spell it like Ultron. Or it's Vision. It's not Ultron, so never mind. Drop that. Mm-hmm.
Cody (Comicbookcody): But I'm you know, I'm I'm excited to see like what else happens with this set because like I love Captain America. I wasn't really sold on the last Captain America they did in the secret lair. The two they've currently shut off are mid.
Mike: Yeah, better at least, but not much.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Yeah. ⁓ I think there's supposed to be a Wolverine in the set. I did I I like the Wolverine from the Secret Layer, but it I just it felt very samey to some other c commanders I have, so I was like, I didn't really want to build it. ⁓ so I'm hoping there's a cool Wolverine.
Mike: What was the other cap? They they had the other cap. That was what, in the commander set or the ⁓ yeah, the commander deck? Is that what it was?
Cody (Comicbookcody): Yeah, Captain America team leader, red, white, and blue. Whenever another hero you control enters, it gains vigilance and haste until in a turn. And you put a one one counter on that hero and a one one counter on Captain America. It's a three three. That's not bad. Like it's very much like a hey, here's any creature that's a hero. Here you go. ⁓ but I don't know. I don't know if I want a hero typo deck.
Mike: I do, kind of, is the problem. I was looking at the Maria Hill. Agent Maria Hill. Yet another mono white one cost to one when Agent Maria Hill becomes tapped to pay a teamwork cost, put a one one counter on her and draw a card. But like the problem is that I don't think she could be a good commander 'cause I don't know how many mono white heroes there's going to be.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Mm-hmm. Yeah, it's really gonna come down to how much teamwork is there and how much heroes are there for this set. Obviously we know more Marvel sets are coming and they'll probably reuse that, but like maybe this is a commander in like two years that'll be good for you. But yeah.
Mike: Yeah. Yeah. 'Cause yeah, it's gonna be like two mono white teamwork ⁓ cards probably. But ⁓ cool.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Pro pro yeah, but there's there's probably enough to like draft it. There's gonna be enough to draft it with like another one. Like red and white's probably gonna be your teamwork teamwork cards, but like yeah. Yeah. I don't know. I think it'll be interesting. ⁓ I know the hate for U B is wild and frantic, but like I love these characters. Like I'm I'm super excited to see like what they do with them. So I think some of the cards they've shown up so far have been pretty cool. Lucky the Pizza Dog. The sentry is pretty cool.
Mike: Yeah. The sentry the sentry card is fantastic. Like flavor wise it's great and just the card itself is cool. Yeah, flying vigilance indestructible. When a sentry enters, target opponent creates the void, a legendary five five black horror villain creature token with flying indestructible and attacks each combat if able. So I just I don't know. We've tried to have the shenanigan decks before we're giving giving creatures out to to swing around, but
Cody (Comicbookcody): Yeah.
Mike: Who knows? It's that's kind of a fun one. You know, I just like that ⁓ it's a flying five five indestructible and it's like, all right, well even if they swing at me, I have a flying five five vigilant indestructible, so it's kind of kinda cool.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Yeah. Yeah. And I mean, to be fair, Nick's playing less magic these days, so maybe one of these decks can finally work. Mike and Allen seem play ball with us prel ⁓ a couple of times, you know?
Mike: Maybe. You played the other night. Yeah. ⁓ we played the other night. You missed out. You were away. It was our first time playing in a while, I think.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Yeah. First time Nick's played in months, it feels like.
Mike: Yeah, Nick's played in first time in months. I almost won. I almost won. I almost politicked my way into a a win. Because like I well, it just pops out pops off out of nowhere. Because like I I politicked 'cause it was like Mike's like I could kill you or I could kill Alan. I'm like, man, I don't got much going on. I'm a couple turns away, you know, I'm just doing my best. He's like, no, I'm sorry, I gotta I gotta kill you.
Cody (Comicbookcody): You almost did. You in that fucking hearth hole deck. That Hirthold deck is scary.
Mike: And like as soon as he killed me, I'm like, All right, it's good that you did because I was gonna I was gonna ping the whole table for eighteen next turn and win the game. So it was like
Cody (Comicbookcody): Snake in the grass. Yeah, it's like we played I played the last time I played was a month ago. Maybe it was maybe beginning of May. so about a month ago at this point, yeah. and you were playing Hearth Hole, and you kept like a one lane hand, and we were kind of like just leaving you alone most of the game. And then yeah, like you just sort of like, alright, I think I can kill everyone. I can least kill two of you, and then I can just ping down the other one. And I was like,
Mike: Yeah.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Motherfucker, dude. Like we were just like I like, I'm an art bird, having a good old time. Board cat wiped. I like, fuck, I'm screwed. And then yeah, you just turned around and won it from there.
Mike: Well it's you know, because the thing is even if there's a board wipe, for the most part I can really always sacrifice my lands and deal damage once hearthole's out there. So that's the problem. Once Hearthole touches the the field, that's ⁓ that's pretty much it.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Yeah. I would argue kill on sight for Herth Hole.
Mike: Yeah, probably. And even like the the whole game, Mike's like, as soon as he plays Hearthole, you gotta you gotta kill him. He's telling Nick, like once Hearthole comes out, you gotta kill him.
Cody (Comicbookcody): The issue is is like and I like artifact removal was rampant in the format, but it's not a creature until you crew it enough. And so you have this kind of like buffer where it's like, Well, you can't target it like a path of exile right now. Ha ha fuck you. ⁓ Yeah.
Mike: Mm-hmm. Right. Yeah, but you got artifact removal, which is kind of easier. You know, Mark's like, ⁓ it's so hard to get rid of. I'm like, no, he's easy to get ri you have twice the chance of getting rid of him. You know, it's like just it is what it is, like but once once he's out there and he's crewed up to eight, it's a fun deck.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Yeah. It's yeah. I think the game you did it, you like you had him out, you sacked all your lands, you had Morrog on the field, so then you like got a bunch of lands back into play. So you had like you had literally like I think like
Mike: Yeah. We didn't talk about that game, did we? That was such a good game. Everyone was so salty afterwards.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Yeah, yeah, you popped off. 'Cause you had like seventeen combats, you killed us all. I was like, Fuck me. Yeah, it's like nineteen. Nineteen? That's why it was twenty three, yeah. Yeah.
Mike: Seventeen I had more than that. I think it was like twenty-three combats. And and each combat, all my creatures are gained plus one plus
Cody (Comicbookcody): Yeah. It was like I was like, All right man, you got this, you're good. So
Mike: It's like so I kill everyone off the ping. I killed yeah, that's what it was. I killed like Mike and Allen off just the pings. And then it was just you and me. I'm like, all right, and now I have twenty-three combats.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Yeah. Yeah. I think I I think I got a turn before you did that or something like that. I drew a card for turn and I went, Yeah, I think you got this one, brother, I'll pass. 'Cause I literally drew like a fucking land and I was like, Alright, cool. So yeah, that was ⁓
Mike: That's the first time I've ever had the Morag. Is it Moreg or Akum Fury? Morag's Fury. Something. It's the first time I've ever had that card actually do anything. Cool card. It's one of those cards I've like slammed into several decks and it's just never ⁓ you know, I've drawn it and been like, Okay, cool. This doesn't really help me right now. It's kind of just a bad card if I'm not getting the effect, you know?
Cody (Comicbookcody): It's f Morag Fury of a Coomb, is that what it was? Cool card. Cool little minotaur.
Mike: So I was happy that finally came out and did something.
Cody (Comicbookcody): It was it was it was a good game for you. ⁓ but like during that time, like literally like I would play a s I would play my turn and then I would mute because I'd just be coughing. I was really like putting these like ⁓ throat lozenges that like numb my throat. I was like fucking po I like literally in like ten a day. It was crazy. But yeah. ⁓ but yeah, that's ⁓ it's in about a month, so definitely need to get down and play some more ⁓ some more magic. Mm.
Mike: Summer now. Now you have to come up and play. That's what you gotta do.
Cody (Comicbookcody): I gotta figure out I wanna come up this year, but it's ⁓ looking sparse on the PTO after yeah.
Mike: Yeah. Maybe we shouldn't have taken a week off to play ⁓ World of Warcraft in the hotel.
Cody (Comicbookcody): It was nice. It was pretty nice. ⁓ I'm like I'm loving like just another side tangent as we continue to just tell you all about everything. What a war crap has been really fun for me. ⁓ my like warrior is like super geared and I'm getting into these raids. ⁓ I actually got invited to a raid. ⁓ which is like unusual because currently like warriors are not needed. ⁓ so I was like, fuck yeah, cool. I'm excited.
Mike: Are you in your dad's only group still?
Cody (Comicbookcody): I think I'm about to leave because they ⁓ they found out I'm not a dad. ⁓ no, ⁓
Mike: ⁓ no, 'cause you're not a dad, they found out. They realize it's just like sweat clothes, sweatpants filled with like rolled up socks in the background of your camera.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Yeah. Turns out you can't be a dog dad in this guild. Fuck off. ⁓ for people who don't know, there's a very famous story about me that ⁓ many of my friends know. I joined a Destiny 2 clan, and part of the joining it so here's thing: it was when you guys were all gone from the game, and I needed people to do raids with. And so the only clan I could find was this it was a dad's clan, and they were like
Mike: Yeah, doesn't count.
Cody (Comicbookcody): ⁓ well, like what's the name of your child and how old are they? And like I was like, ⁓ I had a cat at the time named Ellie, and I was like, Ellie, she's three, which she was a three-year-old cat. ⁓ and they were like, What's your favorite hobby with your daughter? And I was like, ⁓ we love to play Destiny together. She sits on my lap and watches me play. And like
Mike: Mm, mm-hmm. Ball of a string. ⁓
Cody (Comicbookcody): I I always only hit it for about a week before I was like, I can't keep this charade up. I gotta get out here. But anyways, I'm in a guild called Dads. It's just I so happen to join. They don't really require you to be a dad. ⁓ But ⁓ that's what I do, you know. I'm just I'm just trying to have you know, trying to live that life, I guess.
Mike: Ha ha ha Why you just searching out dad groups is what I wanna know. It's what you do. I gravitate towards dads.
Cody (Comicbookcody): So the expansion we're in. So the last expansion, there was 40 man raids, which I remember telling you about and you going, I couldn't fucking imagine. ⁓ well now they've dropped it down to twenty-five and ten. ⁓ and they we had enough for one twenty-five man team and like three to four ten man teams. We don't have enough for a second twenty-five man team, and literally Saturday we tried to do one and they were like
Mike: Mm-hmm.
Cody (Comicbookcody): It was maybe forty few minutes of us sitting around not doing anything. Which is a waste of my fucking time. Let me tell you what. I could be fucking doing something important, like birdwashing. I got kids play with the fuck. ⁓ they later were like, All right, hey, sorry we can't do this. There's a group playing in three hours if y'all wanna do that. And I was like, Sure, 'cause I wanna get my loot, you know, that's what I'm about. But like I was like I was like, I can't. Like I messaged a dude, like a one of the guild leaders tomorrow this morning and was like, Hey, any chance I'm getting on team one?
Mike: You got kids to play with.
Cody (Comicbookcody): My DPS is pretty good. I'm out here poggin'. They were like, No and I went, Cool. So I got on right before we were starting recording ⁓ and started looking for a new guild. I was like, Fuck it. I'm gonna go find I'm gonna go fucking play with new people and figure it out. So
Mike: Mm. Well, I have no video game news. I've been playing Vampire Crawlers. That's the game I've been playing.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Maybe a crop, but also you were pogging off in the finals.
Mike: I have a new finals video out. Yeah. New finals videos out.
Cody (Comicbookcody): It'll be in the link down below, if I remember. Yeah, fuck it. It was a good video. It was very good. Laz is out here a an assassin with this double barrel shotgun.
Mike: Yeah. Might as well. Why not? It was a good video, right? I had some Mm. I'm a one trick pony, but the trick's still the trick keeps working. So it's like I'm not gonna switch it up, you know. I just doing good.
Cody (Comicbookcody): I I thought you a text. What you'll see in the video, people, when you watch, my favorite thing about Laz's video is he uses his sawed off double barrel shotgun. He shoots his two shots and if he can't reload, he just starts throwing elbows like he's fucking an MMA fighter. It's crazy.
Mike: Yeah. It's ridiculous. Well, the thing is, I don't know how many people play the finals here. Probably no one, because no one plays the finals. It's the best game you're not playing. It is probably one of the best first person shooters. It is so fluid. It is fun. The guns feel great. It's a great game. But you have two shots and the reload animation's so long. And you used to be able to kill like those heavy class, medium class, and light class. You used to be able to kill a heavy class with two headshots from the shotgun. No more. It's two and a half. You only have two bar you only got two shots, so it's like, all right, blast off, blast off, and then just start throwing elbows until they ⁓ you know, until they die. And when they die, they turn to a big pile of coins. It's the best. So we'll link the video. It's ⁓ got some good music too. Some some choice music. That's ⁓ video one of three. I think I got two others coming out because I finally decide to stop being lazy.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Hell yeah. Yeah, I'll have a link. It does. Very good music. Hell yeah. ⁓ look at you.
Mike: And I went through and I edited all my clips down. And I had about what was it? I don't know. Maybe like eight, nine months worth of clips. And they're all and when you put it together, it was like fifty seven minutes worth of thirty second clips. It's like, ⁓ no. So I've edited I edited a lot of it down. but yeah, it's some good videos, man. But yeah, besides that, I haven't been playing much anything.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Jesus I've been doing too much. ⁓ yeah.
Mike: Rocket League. I have a chat band this week. So I don't even know if it's worth playing. I'll just wait. I'll just wait the five days I got left. The team was annoying and I'd let them know it for sure. Turn apparently I'm harassing people now. They are harassing me by scoring on me.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Probably not. Yeah. Bullies. Bullying ya. ⁓ that it's been a minute since we've gotten to talk about deck ideas. Are there any commanders or ideas you have out there that you've been kind of percolating on? Anything the mock spill's been looking a little dry. I think the last one's for me.
Mike: Moxville's been looking very dry. That's the problem, is that I don't know. The last two sets, there hasn't been any commander that has like really spoken to me. ⁓ like in the turtle set, I think that's kind of when our little drought here started, was because it was my turn for an episode and I was like, maybe Casey Jones mono red, and I was like, No, that's not gonna work.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
Mike: And then I had traded for the the splinter decks ⁓ cards. I'm like, okay, well, I'll do the mono black splinter deck. And I'm like, it's just not very good. Like, it's not the commander. And ⁓ I I just kept on like kind of spinning my wheels, and then Strixaven started getting spoiled, and there was nothing. It was like that was kind of just the beginning of the downfall here. So I would say of the last two sets there, nothing's really spoken to me. ⁓ but Things I it up. The Marvel set, there's a couple of cards that I kind of really like, and depending on who they actually release, we'll see. I know we ⁓ were at the the convention there when they first spoiled it, and they said it's definitely going to be more what like Avengers and Street Team. Yeah, which that kind of sucks. Love an X-Men set. I've said from the beginning if the X-Men set comes out, I get the
Cody (Comicbookcody): Avengers, Fantastic Four, Street People. Yeah.
Mike: The booster, the collector booster, the commander decks. You know, like I'll I'll go out for that. But ⁓ there's still some cool cards. The thing looks awesome. The ⁓ the vision card that you're talking about before. I kinda like looking at that too. there's a a plethora of mono white commander decks continually speak to me. ⁓ besides that, I'd say maybe the ⁓ what was it? Krang? Is it ⁓ the Krang card then
Cody (Comicbookcody): Yeah. Yeah.
Mike: Ninja Turtles, the ⁓
Cody (Comicbookcody): ⁓ yeah, and turtles the giant like nine nine.
Mike: Yeah, the giant colorless nine nine crap, what's his name?
Cody (Comicbookcody): Praying, Utram Warlord. Nine mana nine nine, flying trample, indestructible haste. Other artifact creatures you control have flying trample indestructible haste. Your keyword soup for
Mike: Yeah. Colorless. Colorless keyword soup. Like that's the thing. It's it's cool, but it's like maybe that just goes in the Doctor Robotnik deck, or maybe that eventually goes in my keyword soup deck, or you know, I I don't know if it's strong enough to be a commander, so long story short, nothing's really tickled me at the moment. ⁓ I haven't felt the need to brew. How about you? How about you?
Cody (Comicbookcody): Colorless. Yeah. Yeah. Fair. I so they showed off a couple cards at Magicon Vegas from the Hobbit set, and the number one for me was Smaug the Magnificent. ⁓ two, a red, red, legendary creature dragon, four, three, flying haste. Whenever Smaug attacks, he deals damage equal to number of treasures you control to any target. At the beginning of your upkeep, create a treasure token. ⁓
Mike: Well.
Cody (Comicbookcody): That's a really cool design. I really like it. Obviously treasures are a plenty in this format. ⁓ but like while I was thinking about that, I randomly watched a video a few nights ago of the Spike Feeders and they were playing Jaws, Relentless Predator. But they're playing in C D H and I was like, I don't know about that. But I don't know, there's something about like a giant shark just punching people in the face. It seems fun. I own it too. Yeah. ⁓ which before this
Mike: Okay. Well, you have it too, so that helps.
Cody (Comicbookcody): That was what started. I pulled it up on EDA track and saw the price and almost like shit myself. because a hundred and sixty dollars for that card is crazy. ⁓ but Jaws is a three mana, red red, legendary creature shark, five five, trample haste. Whenever Jaws deals combat damage to a player, create that many blood tokens. And then whenever a non-creature artifact is sacrificed or destroyed, Jaws deals one damage to each opponent. So making blood tokens useful, less?
Mike: Ha ha ha. You gotta figure out what to do. if you could find a way, someone's gotta find a way. Maybe it's you.
Cody (Comicbookcody): I could do it. Turns out if you just throw ⁓ in the the bin and they ping people, it's pretty good.
Mike: Try it. Try it out. It'd be cool to see a draw's deck. I
Cody (Comicbookcody): I kinda wanna do like a crazy like just like mono red, just fucking burn everything to the ground. 'Cause like I got that Kratos that's mono red too, that's like got the like making people swing. I don't know. I think it was just a fun idea there somewhere.
Mike: Mm-hmm. We should I don't know. Like for mono red like I said, I was I was looking at the ⁓ Casey Jones mono red deck. Like it's fun. I just don't know how to make it I don't know, fun to play with. You know, what's the Casey Jones deck? I I'm gonna look on EDH rec, but there's probably like four of ⁓
Cody (Comicbookcody): Mm-hmm. The other deck I had done right before we went to our break was a ground chuck and dirt bag from Nerd's Turtles. It was the four green green eight eight ox molten with trample. Whenever you tap a land for mana, add green. It was supposed to be like a mono green burn deck. And it it kinda did that. ⁓ I don't know, it's just a dumb deck idea I had where I like, What if I just like made a shit ton of mana and played one of these spells? ⁓
Mike: Yeah. Yeah.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Let me see if I can find one of the spells of one of the cast in it.
Mike: Casey Jones vigilante. When Casey Jones enters, draw three cards at the beginning of your next upkeep, discard three cards at random. Like that might just be fun, but like that's probably not gonna be fun. Yeah, well, it's like, ⁓ everything has flashbacks. Like, well, I don't necessarily want to be playing a spell slinger deck. Like, I don't want to play mono red spell slinger. Yeah, I I want I want creatures. That's my problem is I I want creatures over spells.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Yeah. You're gonna discard the three cards you want and be like, Fuck. Yeah. Fair enough, fair enough. ⁓ Hurricane was one of the spells I was like, ⁓ if I can like make like which I think in one of the games I played, I made like forty mana or not forty, like twenty mana out of nowhere, and I got to play a hurricane. It's ⁓ X and green deal hurricane deals X damage to each creature with flying and each player. So not a something you don't see. It's and I was trying to go back to like our roots of like going for weird ideas and I I thought it worked out pretty well. Pretty fun little deck. Got to play it a few times.
Mike: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. You build it. You build that I'll build the thumber chad here. The from the
Cody (Comicbookcody): Thumberjad. What the hell?
Mike: Thumberchad, Thumberchad. The mono red dra dragon. Yeah. When Thumberch Thumberchad, that's what he's called in my mind. That's probably not how it's said, but it doesn't matter.
Cody (Comicbookcody): ⁓ the mono red dragon. I remember that one from Dungeons Dragons. I was like, what the hell's a Thumberchad? I've always read that as Thumberchoed, and I know that's wrong, but like every time I've read it, I've been like, that's hey, hey.
Mike: He is short and thick, so could be. When Thumberchod enters, he deals X damage to each other creature without flying and each player will X's the number of mountains you control. Just build like ninety nine mountains and Thumberchad He gets countered like shit.
Cody (Comicbookcody): So it's gonna go great. No, damn it. ⁓ man. In a mono red deck, maybe not.
Mike: Can I get thirty lands? In a ⁓ but like that's that's the thing. I I don't have a mono red deck. I think that's the one color I don't have mono ⁓
Cody (Comicbookcody): Mm-hmm. It's the one color I don't associate with you, except for like whenever you're playing like Hearthole, 'cause that's like not a red is burn. 'Cause like what like really what other red decks do you have?
Mike: Yeah. Well, like I have Zergo, red's in there. I got Edgar, red's in there. what else? Animar, got some red in there.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Yeah, that's a very red deck, yeah. Yeah.
Mike: But you know, none of ⁓ none of ⁓ do the red thing. But I won't care for the red thing. You know, that's that's kind of problem here. Let's find me a mono red deck. But it's like you know, right off the bat it's like, ⁓ well mono red goblins. But I I don't want to do goblins. Goblins is played.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Yeah. Find you a mono red deck. Hmm. I was like, goblins would be the play for you, but yeah, you've always kinda shied away from it 'cause of the token generation.
Mike: And everyone else does it. Like I feel like whenever someone starts playing Commander, their first thought's like, Well obviously it's it's goblins, dragons, or angels Excuse me. Yeah, well that's the problem, is that I don't know what else I would ⁓ I don't know what else I would do. Like what else
Cody (Comicbookcody): What can they they're the staple three? What can you say? You're good. Could you do kobolds?
Mike: Yeah. Just cobalt creatures. Well that's that's the fun thing about Zirgo is like Zirgo is kinda like the most red I play because it's all warriors and you know stuff like that. So there's a lot of a lot of red warriors. So I I feel like I kinda get my my red fill there, but as far as like a mono red, I got mono everything else. I I need a mono red.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Yeah. Yeah.
Mike: It's already that's what it is.
Cody (Comicbookcody): I think that's why I was looking at Jaws is because I wanted to do like a mono red ⁓ what was that? ⁓ you should do J. Jonah Jameson. I always wanted to do that one, but I never did. I think you would like yeah, menace typeful.
Mike: Yeah. Menace typal. Let's look ⁓ up. J. Jonah Jameson. Ugly art. Such bad art. Sus.
Cody (Comicbookcody): They he has a different art that was like we got that art from the MagicCon we went to. And it's much better than the one that he currently has.
Mike: Yeah. Let's see. When Jade Jonah Jameson enters, suspect up to one target creature. A suspected creature is a menace. They can't block. Whenever a creature you control with menace attacks, create a treasure token. Yeah. Aggro, just monterey aggro.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Could be fun. Yeah.
Mike: Maybe. Maybe I could do that. Maybe I might could.
Cody (Comicbookcody): That could be fun.
Mike: Maybe that's what the next episode will be about. If we actually make a next episode that comes out before ⁓ before the Marvel set. When does the Marvel set even come out?
Cody (Comicbookcody): Well Well ⁓ I think next month. No, actually it might be July. No, 'cause Morrow just did his preview thing. So it's gotta be soon.
Mike: ⁓ J Jonah and James. Okay, we do have the better art version here. The promo card. We're just shaking his fist. And we got a month, full month. Alright, so maybe I'll ⁓
Cody (Comicbookcody): No, yeah, it releases June twenty sixth. Okay. Yeah. I think we could definitely I think we can get back on track a little bit, you know? We can be doing this.
Mike: Yeah. Yeah, I I think so. I think so. We this is kinda like a little bit of a teaser episode here. People are gonna listen to this and be like, They s talked about magic, like not at all.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Little catch up. Yeah. Hey, it's our podcast. We do what we want.
Mike: We do what we want, but maybe J Jonah Jamosen.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Well yeah, a little teaser into Marvel and then the next month we can dive into a couple you know, maybe we do like a little you pick a card, I pick a card episode and we talk about it. Record for four hours.
Mike: Yeah, well didn't I build a Spider Man deck? I built ⁓ anti venom.
Cody (Comicbookcody): You build anti venom, yeah. That was one, yeah. Really good.
Mike: That was a fun deck. Why'd I stop playing that?
Cody (Comicbookcody): I think you had a couple bad games and you were like, fuck this deck. It definitely does. Definitely does sound like you less.
Mike: That doesn't sound like me at all. I usually stick about Yeah, I have that personality. It's my cousin complaining about fighting games. Like he's always like, Well, you tried this game and you couldn't figure it out after like two days, so you said, Fuck this, and you stopped playing. And then we tried this game and you couldn't figure it out. So you said, Screw this, you stop playing. I'm like, Yeah. Yeah, I kinda have a ⁓ bit of a track record. If I'm not good at something right away, it's not for me. That's why I like magic.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Ha ha ha. Yeah. Fair enough.
Mike: Good instantly. Never lost a match. No. Man, I've I'm getting to the point with like Hearthole. I don't smoke when I play Hearth hole. I gotta be ⁓ I gotta be locked in. That's that's a good end bad. It's good for the table, bad for me, but I understand what the sacrifice I need to make to pop off. Because it literally is like as soon as I get the perfect
Cody (Comicbookcody): Instantly. No weed needed. ⁓ You gotta be locked in.
Mike: The perfect situation going, it's always just like a I never lead into a win. It's always like, okay, no one expects anything here. I'm gonna deal thirty-eight damage to everyone at the tape.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Mm-hmm. Yeah. I enjoyed the other night if I think every each of you played a burn deck except for I think Alan and I was like, Poor fucking Alan. That dude got fucking ran over.
Mike: Yeah. Yeah, poor Alan. Well, freaking Mike. He's like, I didn't know Nick was playing a burn deck. It's like he's playing the ⁓ what's his name? Esky. The one that burns, he's Yeah, but that's the only one he plays big creatures, so I didn't think he would play big creatures. Why yeah. Like then why what else do you think he's doing, man? So I almost burned down the whole tape.
Cody (Comicbookcody): That's Ski, the one that like burns whenever you play big creatures. Yeah. Thought I mean just up a deck of ramp. ⁓ my
Mike: Alright, so J. John and Jameson. I'll I'll dust off the old Moxfield login and ⁓ and see if I can start brewing that. Maybe we'll get something something going for.
Cody (Comicbookcody): ⁓ god. Yeah, it's so I went and looked, I was like, When's the last time a deck got updated on this website of ours? Two months. Mo Mana Mo Problems. Two months ago, ground chuck and dirtbag.
Mike: ⁓ god, it's bad. We've been bad. We've been bad. We've been bad. We'll we'll be better now. You were having car situations and you got sick. I was away and then like had some other stuff pop up. So I was like just stuff happens. Got a new dog now. That's my new thing, so I'm not going anywhere for a while.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Yeah. Yeah, I mean it's just life. And I mean like At the end of the day, like we do this podcast 'cause it's fun and it's a nice way for us to catch up with each other. Like I've missed talking to you so much. Like I like I felt like we haven't been texting as much just 'cause like life's been crazy. Like ⁓ so Yeah. So it's been nice to catch up and
Mike: No. Yeah. Absolutely. Suppose I've talked to you in like two months. I talk to you on Overwatch sometimes, so it's usually you just yelling, gang salty, or you're screaming, Let's fucking go when we win. That's pretty much the extents of our conversations.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Yeah. Well ⁓ god. Yeah. I I think yeah, the last time I played, I think it was in the tw mix of me getting better slash getting worse and I screamed let's fucking go and I thought I fucking ripped my vocal cords. I was like, ⁓ fuck me. So
Mike: Maybe that's the problem. It's not you eating foods, it's you screaming at video games.
Cody (Comicbookcody): I so turns out, just to repa rehash what we talked about earlier in the show. So it turns out, so I went and I so like April twelfth, I think is the exact day, I went to urgent care and I was like, please give me a steroid shot. Something's wrong with me. And they refused. And so they just gave me like a weak ass antibiotic. Turns out they gave me a ch a children's antibiotic. And if they had just given me a real fucking antibiotic, a real fucking adult antibiotic.
Mike: It's a bubblegum flavored.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Like a moxicillin or anything like that. It would have healed. But instead I got given a baby fucking ⁓ I fucking w dude, I miss that shit. Like I missed drinking that shit from when I was a kid. That stuff was delicious.
Mike: Like here you go. It's pink, it tastes like bubblegum. Take ten milliliters ever twice a day. Charlie, my daughter has some right now. She had to ⁓ yeah, she needed antibiotics or something. So they gave her they gave her that. I was like, let's see if this tastes as good as I remember. It's okay. It doesn't taste it doesn't taste as good as it used to, I feel. And that's right. For those listening, I took a shot a shot of children's antibiotics to see if it tasted good.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Yeah. It's one of those D Hell yeah, brother. Hell yeah. Do you remember those the jug of like it's like it was like not Kool-Aid, but it was like a fruit j it was like a fruit drink and they were in like a little jug barrel and there was an aluminum foil cap and you could peel the aluminum foil cap off. Was that a thing when you were a kid? Yeah. I drank one of those a few years ago because I was like, ⁓ I remember loving these as a kid. Straight fucking sugar. I thought I I was like, I was like, I'm pretty sure I just got diabetes from drinking this. Like fuck. Yeah, it is a rough.
Mike: Mm-hmm. Yeah, yes. ⁓ yeah. All that stuff is. It's like whenever I try to have a treat from my childhood, like, ooh, a Cadbury caramel egg in a habit. I'm like, This is so much caramel I need a better mix of chocolate and caramel. It's ⁓ Yeah.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Yeah. Yeah, it was it was rough. ⁓ yeah, if they had just so I was like I'll never go to that origin care again. They like suck ass. ⁓ so yeah.
Mike: I've been to urgent care I think twice in my entire life and I'm pretty sure both times were for COVID.
Cody (Comicbookcody): There was a period of my life where like I would always go there because I didn't have a primary care doctor. And then like so I got a primary care doctor and ⁓ when I got this job and like I like, ⁓ this is a fucking revolutionary. I can actually go to a real doctor and get real results. Hell yeah. But then we swapped insurance this year and I haven't been able to find a new primary care doctor. So that's why I reason I went. I was like, please just give me a steroid shot, it's all I fucking need and I'll feel better and instead I got a month long infection in my throat. So so
Mike: Yeah. That's ridiculous.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Yeah, that was fun. ⁓ yeah. Doing better though. Doing better. Not dying.
Mike: Good for you. You're better. Well now we can now we can play games, play magic, play video games, can chat more. I don't have any trips planned at all, so I'm not going anywhere for a while. It's a plan. It's summer on Long Island. You only get like two and a half months where the weather doesn't suck. So ⁓ we don't go anywhere. I'll be staying home. I'll be staying home. I'd say come up to visit, but you no PTO.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Yeah. Had to play some magic this weekend, maybe. Fair enough. Okay, fair enough. Well yeah. All right.
Mike: Now have it on PTO that
Cody (Comicbookcody): We could make it a long weekend. ⁓ the house coming up on a long weekend.
Mike: I just say we just had a long weekend. Four days. It rained three and a half of the days of the four day weekend up here.
Cody (Comicbookcody): So in California, it was ⁓ nice fifty-five degrees, windy, nice. Apparently here in Louisiana, it rained nonstop. We were an hour from landing in New Orleans. The plane shook so violently, they turned the seatbelt signs and said, Do not move, stay in your seats. And I went, Well, this fucking sucks. So Yeah, it was a very n I I was I tried I did everything in my power to not.
Mike: Ha ha. ⁓ that's always fun.
Cody (Comicbookcody): ⁓ look at the clock for the next hour. ⁓ played solitaire on the computer. I s I suck with solitaire. I used to be really good as a kid. I used to be fucking that plane one I think was rigged. They were they were fucking on me. It was it was rough. Kill their fuck on me. ⁓
Mike: Piss your pants. That's what he did on the plane. I am so good at solitaire. I am so good at solitaire. Mm. You think it's rigged? They're can't let ⁓ fuck on you, Code. Speaking of wrestling and New York, the ⁓ New York sports are right now having themselves a ⁓ a little revolution here and it's all because of a wrestler. You you familiar with this? You you watch wrestling?
Cody (Comicbookcody): Double or nothing. Is this no. Did someone curse somebody? Is this what's happening? The New York Knicks got cursed or whatever? Yeah, they lost. I think s
Mike: Is it the New York Knicks? They got cursed by Danhausen and then he uncursed them and they proceeded to win eleven games in a row, which is like like the third or fourth longest win streak in playoff history. Of the high
Cody (Comicbookcody): Yeah. You're welcome. You know what us rus wrestling nerds out there can take this victory, you're fucking welcome.
Mike: Yeah, it's it's the wrestling fans. All because of this weird guy with a fake accent.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Yeah. Did he have good people?
Mike: Dan Hadley seems funny enough. I don't know. I I think this is propelling him into the spotlight because ⁓ New York fans are crazy for sports and now he's at the forefront of it, so he's gonna get big. I think he'll win heavyweight champion.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Yeah. There. ⁓ yeah. That he's like the number two merch seller for that company. Like over everyone, which is wild. So yeah.
Mike: Yeah. Yeah. ⁓ it's gonna shoot up even more, I think, to tell you the truth. I think there's an event in New York he said coming up. ⁓ it's gonna they're gonna go nuts for him. Steal him and carry him through the streets.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Yeah. ⁓ yeah, definitely. They're like, ⁓ thank you so much. ⁓ there, anything else, Laz? Have we bantered? Have we done enough here?
Mike: Have we bented? Has it even been an hour yet? Like that's the thing. I want to give the people at least an hour. I know it's not good content, but it's not good, but at least it's it's long. No, I don't think we did. I don't feel I don't feel good about what we just did to these people that listen to the whole time. They come in for the magic. They come in for the hot takes. I don't think people just want to
Cody (Comicbookcody): ⁓ we're at at least an hour. I mean we we did some good ass content here, let me tell you. You don't think we did? These people just want to hear our beautiful they cover the hot takes. Give me a hot take. What's your hot take right now?
Mike: I don't know we're both boring people, Cody. I don't think we have hot takes or good content. You know, the band the ban we need the magic content to propel the band, you know? That's the problem. We didn't have the mod magic content this time.
Cody (Comicbookcody): We didn't. My hot magic take currently.
Mike: Hmm. So what's your hot magic take? Women shouldn't be allowed to play Magic the Gathering. Your words not mine. Your words not mine, Cody. Your words not my I'm just reading the text that you just sent me. You sent me that text message an hour ago.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Would not have gone there of all the places. Was not gonna go there of all places. Not it. Not my words. Just for the record. Just for the record. I think women should play Magic all the time. ⁓ you know? I think I think women should have played Magic back in the nineteen sixties and stuff like that, you know? That's how far back. I think, yeah, Richard Garfield, more like Rose Garfield.
Mike: I think women should have invented magic. No, that's bad. That's a bad hot take. We're gonna have to erase this whole section. What's your hot take?
Cody (Comicbookcody): Rose? Bad heart take? My hot take Okay. What the fuck? ⁓ my hot take is build more boring decks. Stop thinking you need to be the smartest human being in the fucking room. Just build a fucking mono red deck that punches face.
Mike: I don't think I don't think build more boring deck. Build less complicated decks. Yeah. Yeah.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Yes, exactly. That's what I'm saying. Build just build a fucking basic deck that wins through combat. You don't need a root goldmer machine to turn on. Thus, you should take apart Earthhold, is what I'm
Mike: Mm-hmm. Hearthole is my most complicated it's my sober deck. Which is funny because I took apart Korvold to build Hearthole. And if you remember when we first started playing, I would always say, I'm like Korvold's the only deck I have where I have to like stay sober to play because there's so much happening with Korvold. And ⁓ man I have like my Korvold decks now are like eighty five cards.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Exactly. Which is crazy. Yeah.
Mike: I'm like, well the deck's broken forever. I can never play it again. In reality, it's like I could probably just add I I can't do it. It's just not there. But ⁓ I can't have I can't have two Jun decks.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Can't do it. That's funny. I mean you could. The mana base would suck in one and be great in the other.
Mike: Could you? The manabas does suck in one already. I was playing Hearthold, I'm like, I don't have any shock or triombes in here. I'm like, how do I not have a triome in here?
Cody (Comicbookcody): I think it's like why I've been kind of like looking at a lot of like monocolored decks 'cause I'm like, I don't wanna spend money on lands, like crazy fucking lands. Just I wanna I wanna open my box of basics and be like, ⁓ yes. You
Mike: Yeah. Mono white. You gotta pick a color and just stick to it.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Yeah, exactly. But yeah, that's my hot tank. Build more boring decks. Stop doing crazy bullshit. I say, as I'm not gonna go build a crazy bullshit deck.
Mike: That's your hot tech? What's my hot take? Do I have a hot take? Playless removal when you play against me. That's my hot take. Let me do cool stuff. Just just enjoy the game. Let people do cool build boring simple decks, but if someone's doing something cool, let them do it. Just let ⁓ do it. Just let ⁓ do it, man. I've said it before, I'd rather get two mediocre games in than one good game.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Damn, that's a fucking Let me let me enjoy the game, goddammit. Trying to have fun. Fuck. Let him do it. Just let him fucking do it, brother. Yeah. Alright. I think we leave the people there.
Mike: All right. I'm
Cody (Comicbookcody): Alright. Until next time. A brew will be
Mike: Screwed Reviewed. We don't do that anymore. Damn it. That's how out of practice I am.
Cody (Comicbookcody): Nope. Wait. That's the old thing. We haven't done that in while. Shit. ⁓ we sh we always talk, we should always talk about these things. ⁓ until next time, Spider Man is there you go. We'll see you next time for J. Jonah Jameson. Hell yeah. Bye everybody.
Mike: Goddamn dirty menace. That's what J. Jonah Jameson for next time. Bye everybody.
