ABOUT THIS EPISODE
A wedding story with a plot twist, a family shaped by schemes, and a God who keeps working anyway. Genesis 29 has romance on the surface, but once you slow down it becomes a sharp mirror for the ways we chase love, control outcomes, and justify messy choices because we’re sure we know what “should” happen.
We talk through Jacob meeting Rachel at the well, the famous kiss, and that almost cinematic moment where he rolls the stone away like it’s nothing. Then the chapter turns dark fast: Jacob serves seven years for Rachel, and Laban swaps Leah into the wedding night. The deceiver becomes the deceived, and we ask the uncomfortable question behind it all: when we manipulate to get a “good” result, are we actually trusting God or trying to replace Him? Along the way we connect the dots to other biblical patterns like Abraham and Sarah grasping for the promise, and we tease out what real faith looks like when you’re tempted to force the blessing.
Leah’s storyline might be the most tender part of the chapter. She’s unloved and unwanted, yet God sees her, blesses her, and slowly reshapes her from striving to worship until she names Judah and says, “This time I’ll praise the Lord.” We end with hope that hits the heart: through Leah come Levi and Judah, leading to the priesthood, King David, and Jesus Himself. If you feel overlooked, rejected, or stuck competing for worth, you are not invisible to God.

00:00:11.039 --> 00:00:13.359
And welcome back to a chapter day.
00:00:13.599 --> 00:00:14.720
Keeps the devil away.
00:00:14.960 --> 00:00:20.559
Today, Pastor Holland and Pastor Pleck, that's me, are looking at Genesis chapter 29.
00:00:20.960 --> 00:00:24.559
And what a story of love and romance it is.
00:00:24.879 --> 00:00:26.559
First off, the kiss.
00:00:27.519 --> 00:00:33.920
Okay, so important to note that when Jacob sees uh Rachel and he goes and kisses her.
00:00:34.240 --> 00:00:35.280
He's making out with her.
00:00:35.520 --> 00:00:37.600
Okay, so you know that's one take.
00:00:37.679 --> 00:00:39.119
I believe it's a bit of a stretch.
00:00:39.280 --> 00:00:41.280
He kissed Rachel and he wept aloud.
00:00:41.359 --> 00:00:46.000
So maybe he's just crying and he's an emotional guy.
00:00:46.159 --> 00:00:49.039
He makes out, he instantly feels guilty and starts crying.
00:00:49.119 --> 00:00:49.679
Is that it?
00:00:49.920 --> 00:01:06.799
So I think the context is more of a tears of joy and a more of a friendly greeting kiss rather than a make out session because verse 13, as soon as Laban heard the news about Jacob, his sister's son, he ran to meet him and embraced him and kissed him.
00:01:06.879 --> 00:01:07.040
Yeah.
00:01:07.280 --> 00:01:08.000
And brought him to his house.
00:01:08.239 --> 00:01:09.040
Yeah, that makes more sense.
00:01:09.200 --> 00:01:14.719
I don't think this is like a Sodom, you know, uh part two here.
00:01:14.879 --> 00:01:20.560
We don't see any kind of, I think this is more of just our culture is unfamiliar with this, but this is a greeting type kiss.
00:01:20.799 --> 00:01:34.400
Okay, can I now the next one is I love how when Jacob shows up to uh Pat and Haran, he finds a like three flocks of sheep lying beside the well and nobody is watering them.
00:01:34.560 --> 00:01:37.120
Now he's like, he starts getting critical.
00:01:37.280 --> 00:01:39.439
Why is nobody watering the flocks?
00:01:39.599 --> 00:01:53.920
And they say because uh this belongs to Laban, and I think it's because they were waiting for Rachel to water her flocks, and they get first dibs on the water, and then they would wait.
00:01:54.159 --> 00:02:02.239
But Jacob takes it upon himself to kind of ignore all you know, either moral or poor work ethic.
00:02:02.319 --> 00:02:04.239
You know, they could have been just lazy shepherds.
00:02:04.480 --> 00:02:11.199
Um, but he just goes, I will get this off, and he gets it off, and then boom, here comes Rachel, and he greets her.
00:02:11.280 --> 00:02:13.439
So he sees Rachel.
00:02:13.599 --> 00:02:14.159
Right.
00:02:14.479 --> 00:02:22.240
As soon as Jacob saw Rachel, he gets up and rolls the stone away, which typically took like multiple shepherds pushing the thing away.
00:02:22.319 --> 00:02:26.800
And so remember a couple chapters back, we're talking about Esau being a man's man and the hunter and Harry.
00:02:27.039 --> 00:02:28.639
Maybe he's a strong dude.
00:02:28.800 --> 00:02:30.719
All right, maybe he worked out in his home gym.
00:02:30.960 --> 00:02:31.360
There you go.
00:02:31.520 --> 00:02:36.639
So he's a strong, incredible feat of strength that he did the moment he saw this beautiful woman.
00:02:36.879 --> 00:02:38.080
He's like, So he's flexing.
00:02:38.400 --> 00:02:42.560
That should show you that flexing for women is an appropriate response.
00:02:42.800 --> 00:02:43.199
There you go.
00:02:43.280 --> 00:02:46.400
He was demonstrating, you know, look, I am strong.
00:02:46.639 --> 00:02:49.680
And, you know, cut and then so he he's showing his strength.
00:02:49.919 --> 00:02:53.520
He's showing physical strength, and he has an emotional side because he starts crying.
00:02:53.759 --> 00:02:54.400
Right.
00:02:54.639 --> 00:02:58.240
I mean, the the guy, uh what a well-rounded fellow, you know.
00:02:58.719 --> 00:03:03.280
Well, he probably read poetry and then worked, did a workout right there.
00:03:03.520 --> 00:03:08.319
He's a he's a romantic guy here, you know, and then you know, he he's willing to serve seven years.
00:03:08.560 --> 00:03:11.919
Seven years for and it seemed like but a moment because of his great love for her.
00:03:12.159 --> 00:03:14.639
Like just epitome of romantic manner.
00:03:14.800 --> 00:03:20.159
And you would think that God would reward him for that, but no, he gets stuck with weak eye Leah.
00:03:22.240 --> 00:03:24.879
As she was called back then, old weak eyes.
00:03:25.840 --> 00:03:26.719
What do you think that means?
00:03:26.879 --> 00:03:31.680
I just think that, you know, her eyes were not symmetrical.
00:03:32.479 --> 00:03:38.479
Or do you think it could be, you know, you could read it as um she appeared weak in their eyes.
00:03:39.120 --> 00:03:40.879
Like she needed to work out more?
00:03:41.120 --> 00:03:44.479
No, like uh just less she appeared weak in her beauty.
00:03:44.719 --> 00:03:45.280
Hmm.
00:03:45.759 --> 00:03:51.919
What how do you interpret that the I just think she was a little cross-eyed, and that just did not do it for Jacob.
00:03:52.000 --> 00:03:55.199
He was like, ah, weak in the well, I don't know, maybe, maybe it was.
00:03:55.280 --> 00:04:00.400
She needed to wear glasses, and so she's always like looking past him, and so it kind of gave her like that clueless look.
00:04:00.639 --> 00:04:01.759
Hey, maybe.
00:04:02.080 --> 00:04:02.960
Um, I don't know.
00:04:03.039 --> 00:04:08.800
I just don't think this the symmetry of the eyes was was a little weaker, and so he was like not into that.
00:04:08.960 --> 00:04:15.840
What he was into was facial symmetry, and he was like, I am into you, Rachel, not into Leah.
00:04:16.000 --> 00:04:21.040
But what's wild is that you know what you can usually see through a veil a little bit?
00:04:21.199 --> 00:04:28.399
Do you think that she had a veil that you know, whenever they were married, he could have gone, whoa, whoa, whoa, I can see old weak eyes there.
00:04:28.800 --> 00:04:29.759
You don't think so?
00:04:30.000 --> 00:04:30.720
I I don't know.
00:04:31.040 --> 00:04:32.319
He appears to be pretty shocked.
00:04:32.399 --> 00:04:32.639
Yeah.
00:04:33.120 --> 00:04:40.639
Do you think he was a little bit uh intoxicated when he married her and wasn't able to discern the miss symmetry?
00:04:40.959 --> 00:04:57.199
Yeah, I mean, it was a wedding uh celebration, the festivities, and so, you know, I don't know if he was drunk or not, but uh had he had he had a couple of drinks, he had his stopped that and been like, whoa, at the ceremony, don't you pull back some sort of ale so you can kind of look at him?
00:04:57.360 --> 00:04:57.839
I don't know.
00:04:58.000 --> 00:05:07.759
This is the part where Laban might have gotten a little uh you know makeup artist to do some work and helped her out, and when they got married, he had no idea.
00:05:08.000 --> 00:05:08.319
Perhaps.
00:05:08.399 --> 00:05:16.079
And so now Jacob, the the trickster, the trickster, who you know deceived his father to get the blessing, has now been tricked himself.
00:05:16.319 --> 00:05:16.639
Right.
00:05:16.879 --> 00:05:22.319
Do you think if he had not tricked his father, would he have received the blessing in the first place?
00:05:24.399 --> 00:05:32.959
So if you go back to the the prophecy, right, where um the older shall serve the younger, yeah, it doesn't specify.
00:05:33.120 --> 00:05:35.920
The Lord didn't specify exactly what that meant.
00:05:36.079 --> 00:05:36.480
Right.
00:05:37.040 --> 00:05:45.120
Uh, but you see, you know, um Jacob's mother trying to take things into her own hands to secure that blessing.
00:05:45.279 --> 00:05:45.839
Right, right.
00:05:46.000 --> 00:06:00.800
And so similar to um over and over, you see that over with uh Abraham, with Isaac trying to take things into their own hands to secure a blessing, first with uh Abraham and Hagar and Ishmael trying to make God's promise happen in their own way, in a sense.
00:06:01.120 --> 00:06:14.000
And so had they not done that, um I think what we're what we're meant to believe is that being faithful to God will lead to the um his blessings coming to pass, right?
00:06:14.160 --> 00:06:17.519
So I don't think they needed to go that route of deception.
00:06:17.600 --> 00:06:23.759
And maybe had they not gone the route of deception, Jacob would have been spared this trick um, you know, in in his own life.
00:06:24.000 --> 00:06:25.120
I think that's really true.
00:06:25.279 --> 00:06:34.000
And I think just in my own life personally, watching the past of like where I've tried to take control of something because I felt like this is what God wants and I need to make it happen.
00:06:34.240 --> 00:06:35.680
You don't need to make it happen.
00:06:35.759 --> 00:06:44.240
All you're doing, you have an illusion of control because if God is really sovereign, if God is really in control, he will overcome any obstacle.
00:06:44.480 --> 00:06:48.319
Um, which is sort of a wild And we see that with Abraham and Isaac, right?
00:06:48.560 --> 00:06:54.720
That's one instance where Abraham was faithful, uh, you know, up all the way up to the last moment.
00:06:54.959 --> 00:06:55.120
Right.
00:06:55.279 --> 00:06:55.680
Yeah.
00:06:55.920 --> 00:07:07.680
Where, you know, he didn't try to go, okay, I'm gonna take this into my own hands, I'm gonna fake like I'm gonna do this, or I'm gonna, you know, sacrifice, uh, I'm gonna switch um Isaac and Ishmael or something.
00:07:07.839 --> 00:07:08.399
You know what I'm saying?
00:07:08.480 --> 00:07:09.680
Like he actually was faithful.
00:07:09.839 --> 00:07:09.920
Right.
00:07:10.079 --> 00:07:14.720
And then we we saw God came through in the end in a way that no one was expecting.
00:07:14.879 --> 00:07:22.000
Um, and so, you know, I think that could have happened as well with um in terms of Jacob and Esau and the prophecy and God's promise to Jacob.
00:07:22.240 --> 00:07:23.519
Anyway, wait, what are your thoughts on that?
00:07:23.680 --> 00:07:24.720
Yeah, I I think so.
00:07:25.279 --> 00:07:34.000
I personally just when I look at the promises of God, when I look at it, again, this goes back to if I don't, then I can't or I won't.
00:07:34.319 --> 00:07:47.279
And it's like if I don't take control of the situation, I won't receive the blessing, or I won't whatever the positive, whatever your outcome desire, or what you feel like God ultimately wants, this goes to the the ends justify the means.
00:07:47.360 --> 00:07:54.079
And so I think that's the part where that's that's been Rachel's or sorry, Rebecca's MO.
00:07:54.240 --> 00:07:56.399
Then it becomes Jacob's MO.
00:07:56.720 --> 00:07:59.199
That then we see Laban's MO.
00:07:59.360 --> 00:08:13.199
It's like a was this something that Nahor, like the father of or sorry, Bethuel, and then ultimately Nahor the grandfather their their family tradition of like being a little bit, you know, tricky in business.
00:08:13.839 --> 00:08:14.319
Yeah, wow.
00:08:14.639 --> 00:08:39.919
I mean, I think it's embedded in all of us just as part of our sinful nature, but we see it exposed here, and then so you know, it's like it's not karma things just coming, you know, it's not some force that's just coming around for um for Jacob, but God, maybe God in his grace and providence, allowing Jacob to be tricked to maybe expose and teach him doesn't feel good to be tricked, right?
00:08:40.879 --> 00:08:42.159
And so maybe to help him mature.
00:08:42.399 --> 00:08:45.679
I think the you know, karma isn't true, but you do reap what you sow.
00:08:45.840 --> 00:08:46.240
That's true.
00:08:46.320 --> 00:08:49.600
Yeah, that that is I think But by the hand of God and the will of God.
00:08:49.919 --> 00:08:50.159
100%.
00:08:50.480 --> 00:08:58.240
So God allowing or even ordaining something to come back around to you so that you might see, man, it doesn't feel good to be tricked.
00:08:58.480 --> 00:09:02.480
Maybe I need to change my ways and leave the trickster kind of me in the past.
00:09:02.639 --> 00:09:05.200
And I think the trickster part comes out because I don't trust God.
00:09:05.360 --> 00:09:12.639
What when you feel like you need to deceive in order to get what God wants, you have confused yourself.
00:09:12.879 --> 00:09:15.759
Your faith is like a works-based faith.
00:09:15.840 --> 00:09:35.279
And I and honestly, and honestly, when you look at um Leah and she has four children right off the bat, their names reveal the works-basedness of her heart of I need to control the situation so I can have what I really want.
00:09:35.519 --> 00:09:35.840
Right.
00:09:36.159 --> 00:09:38.720
Reuben, uh, see a son, right?
00:09:39.120 --> 00:09:42.159
Which is like it's directed at her sister.
00:09:42.480 --> 00:09:43.440
See, I have a son.
00:09:43.600 --> 00:09:44.159
You don't.
00:09:44.240 --> 00:09:45.039
How's that feel?
00:09:45.200 --> 00:09:45.840
Right.
00:09:46.480 --> 00:09:49.840
And then next, uh, next was uh Simeon, right?
00:09:49.919 --> 00:09:50.000
Yeah.
00:09:50.240 --> 00:09:53.519
Simeon, um, the Hebrew word for God listened to me.
00:09:53.600 --> 00:09:53.840
Yeah.
00:09:54.000 --> 00:09:54.960
He listens to me.
00:09:55.120 --> 00:09:56.080
Is he listening to you?
00:09:56.240 --> 00:09:56.799
How's that feel?
00:09:57.120 --> 00:09:57.440
He's not.
00:09:57.519 --> 00:09:59.600
And then the the the third one Levi.
00:10:00.000 --> 00:10:02.480
Levi, he's attached to me now.
00:10:02.720 --> 00:10:04.720
Or or I hope he's gonna be attached to me.
00:10:04.879 --> 00:10:06.879
Three sons, surely he'll look at me now.
00:10:10.080 --> 00:10:12.879
He's gonna be attached to me more than attached to you.
00:10:13.039 --> 00:10:14.000
And there, that's why.
00:10:14.080 --> 00:10:20.879
I mean, when you think through why polygamy is bad, especially, in fact, God says, do not marry sisters.
00:10:21.039 --> 00:10:26.799
That that's like a a thing uh in a polygamy in in into Leviticus, don't marry sisters.
00:10:26.960 --> 00:10:29.360
Um, that's a weird thing to do, right?
00:10:29.519 --> 00:10:37.679
Yeah, and then but we see we see how God is uh working on um Leah as well, we uh blessing her, right?
00:10:37.840 --> 00:10:40.720
It's it's that he saw Leah was hated, and so he opened her womb.
00:10:40.799 --> 00:10:40.960
Yeah.
00:10:41.120 --> 00:10:48.000
So we see God's compassion toward her, and then we see over the years, you know, we get in a couple sentences, boom, boom, boom, boom, four sons.
00:10:48.399 --> 00:10:52.320
Reality, you know, this is at least four years, you know, this is years going on here.
00:10:52.559 --> 00:10:58.879
And uh how her by the fourth child, Judah, this time I'll praise the Lord, right?
00:10:59.200 --> 00:11:00.559
This time I'll praise the Lord.
00:11:00.639 --> 00:11:01.519
Verse 35.
00:11:01.679 --> 00:11:03.360
Therefore she called his name Judah.
00:11:03.519 --> 00:11:12.320
So by the end of you know, this um chapter here, um she she names the fourth son Judah and says, I'm just gonna praise the Lord.
00:11:12.399 --> 00:11:19.039
It's not about um yeah, you know, look at this, uh, Rachel, or you know, let me kind of control my husband.
00:11:19.120 --> 00:11:20.639
It's just I'm gonna praise the Lord.
00:11:20.799 --> 00:11:23.200
And at that point, she ceased bearing children.
00:11:23.360 --> 00:11:23.679
Right.
00:11:23.840 --> 00:11:29.840
Um, and so you see some character development in her through this as well, as well as the Lord's just compassion on her.
00:11:30.559 --> 00:11:37.679
And I think that's um, I think when we want something desperately, yeah, like even if we get it, it won't be enough.
00:11:38.000 --> 00:11:38.480
That's good.
00:11:38.639 --> 00:11:45.039
Like, I I I feel like this happens with people having children, also happens with people wanting to get married.
00:11:45.120 --> 00:11:46.799
It's happens when you want to get the job.
00:11:46.960 --> 00:11:52.080
You get the thing that you so desired, and then you get it, and you're like, what's next?
00:11:52.320 --> 00:12:01.519
And her contentment at the end, now she'll go through some other issues and she'll bring another her servant and give uh her to her husband.
00:12:01.759 --> 00:12:16.080
But in this moment, you know, we all have moments, in this moment, she finally is satisfied and she says, I will praise the Lord, and not the my whole child-bearing situation isn't just to compete with my sister, it is to honor the Lord.
00:12:16.159 --> 00:12:16.960
That's huge.
00:12:17.360 --> 00:12:23.279
And I feel like that's that's where we uh need to walk with God in that.
00:12:23.440 --> 00:12:23.840
Yeah.
00:12:24.000 --> 00:12:24.480
Um, okay.
00:12:24.639 --> 00:12:35.039
So when I think of sin uh to uh confess, I think there's that uh control issue that we want to establish, and I will the ends justify the means.
00:12:35.120 --> 00:12:39.440
Is there somewhere in your life where you're using sin to ultimately get what God wants?
00:12:39.519 --> 00:12:42.639
And that could be in marriage, that could be with children, that could be with a job.
00:12:42.799 --> 00:12:47.200
I know God wants this for me, so I'm gonna go any means necessary to get it.
00:12:47.360 --> 00:12:47.679
Yeah.
00:12:47.919 --> 00:12:51.200
Uh the promise I feel like we need to claim here is that God's with you.
00:12:51.360 --> 00:12:51.519
Yeah.
00:12:51.840 --> 00:12:54.960
You don't need to take matters in your own hands.
00:12:55.120 --> 00:12:58.399
Uh, the example to follow, here's what not to do, right?
00:12:58.480 --> 00:13:07.840
Like I feel like the one thing I see is Leah finally getting content after the fourth one, her contentment comes and she sees this is to honor the Lord.
00:13:08.159 --> 00:13:12.879
Uh and then when I look, command to obey, I think just I don't know if there's just something specific in there, really.
00:13:12.960 --> 00:13:15.759
I don't see any of that, or something to believe or to know.
00:13:15.919 --> 00:13:18.240
I feel like the Lord's saying, just trust him.
00:13:18.480 --> 00:13:20.879
I think that's the absolute aspect of this passage.
00:13:21.120 --> 00:13:22.879
Trust the Lord.
00:13:23.120 --> 00:13:28.159
Yeah, even, you know, and Leah, the one who's hated, weak eyed Leah.
00:13:28.639 --> 00:13:36.399
The one who's hated, the one who wasn't preferred, she's the one through whom God would bring Levi and Judah.
00:13:36.799 --> 00:13:40.080
Through Levi, we get Moses and Aaron, the priesthood.
00:13:40.240 --> 00:13:43.600
Through Judah, we get King David, we get Jesus.
00:13:43.919 --> 00:13:46.720
God chose her to bring the savior of the world.
00:13:46.879 --> 00:13:47.200
Yep.
00:13:47.360 --> 00:13:48.480
The one who was hated.
00:13:48.639 --> 00:13:49.679
And so take heart.
00:13:49.759 --> 00:14:02.799
Like even if you are hated, um, if you feel ugly, if you feel despised, if you feel unloved, know that the Lord sees you, that he loves you, and that he delights to use even the ones that that are hated or despised the most.
00:14:03.120 --> 00:14:04.080
Or not as pretty.
00:14:04.240 --> 00:14:04.639
Yeah.
00:14:04.879 --> 00:14:05.759
Yeah, that's huge.
00:14:05.840 --> 00:14:06.879
It's beautiful.
00:14:07.120 --> 00:14:09.279
Well, thanks so much for tuning in with
