ABOUT THIS EPISODE
“Consider it pure joy” is one of the hardest lines in the New Testament to take seriously, especially when life is genuinely frightening. From a barn at Farm Fellowship near Preston, we begin a book-by-book Bible study of the Book of James with Richard Bewes, Paul Blackham, and our wonderfully international guest Robin Langford, whose gospel work has taken her from Argentina and Paraguay to Sudan and Afghanistan.
We start at James 1:1 and ask the grounding questions: who wrote James, when was it written, and why does it sound so direct? Robin walks us through the strong early-church case that the author is James, Jesus’ half-brother, who became a key leader in the Jerusalem church. Paul then unpacks James’s opening address to the “twelve tribes scattered among the nations”, not as a closed club but as a daring, inclusive picture of God forming a global people in Christ.
From there the passage turns practical: trials, perseverance, wisdom from God, and the danger of being double-minded. Robin shares what “pure joy” can look like in real pressure, including poverty where believers have little left but prayer, and the quiet nearness of Jesus when you feel abandoned. We also look at James’s warning about wealth and status, and the two roads a person can take when tested: trusting God for wisdom, or blaming God and being pulled by destructive desires.
If you care about Christian discipleship that is honest, grounded in Scripture, and shaped for real life, come and study James with us. Subscribe, share with a friend, and leave a review, then tell us: which line from James 1 do you find hardest to live out?

00:00:30.399 --> 00:00:33.200
Ah, come and join us book by book.
00:00:33.439 --> 00:00:35.600
We are doing Bible study right now.
00:00:35.759 --> 00:00:46.799
I'm Richard Buse, and I'm inviting you to join with us here in the barn of the Farm Fellowship about four or five or ten miles from Preston, right here in England.
00:00:46.960 --> 00:01:14.959
I'm joined here by a long-standing colleague Paul Blackham and by another wonderful colleague also, Robin Langford, whose original home, well, really it was Melbourne in Australia, but she's an international ambassador for the gospel, and she's worked in all 12 countries, including Tajikistan, Pakistan, Sudan, Afghanistan, Paraguay, Chile, Argentina, England, of course, Scotland, Greece, Canada.
00:01:15.200 --> 00:01:17.359
So she's very, very international.
00:01:17.519 --> 00:01:20.640
Welcome here to the Farm Fellowship.
00:01:20.879 --> 00:01:24.799
And uh we're doing James, the Book of James, in the New Testament.
00:01:24.959 --> 00:01:25.840
Let's start right away.
00:01:25.920 --> 00:01:30.000
This is study number one, and we're gonna start at chapter one, verse one.
00:01:30.480 --> 00:01:38.079
James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes scattered among the nations, greetings.
00:01:38.719 --> 00:01:47.200
Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance.
00:01:47.439 --> 00:01:53.439
Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.
00:01:53.680 --> 00:02:01.840
If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all, without finding fault, and it will be given to him.
00:02:02.400 --> 00:02:05.760
Well, that's a wonderful start for our uh our study today.
00:02:05.840 --> 00:02:12.879
And as we look at it, I actually Robin, let's start right away with you, because I mean the book of James.
00:02:13.360 --> 00:02:14.560
Uh what is it?
00:02:15.199 --> 00:02:16.080
Where are we with this?
00:02:16.159 --> 00:02:20.719
Uh what do we know about the author of the book of James, or even when it was written?
00:02:21.120 --> 00:02:24.159
Well, we don't know much about either, not for sure.
00:02:24.479 --> 00:02:31.520
But common belief is that this book was written by the eldest of Jesus' half-brothers.
00:02:31.680 --> 00:02:36.159
So Jesus' brother, a younger brother, but the eldest of those younger brothers.
00:02:36.319 --> 00:02:46.719
Uh so someone who would have grown up with the Lord Jesus, spent his life with him, but did not believe in him, we believe, um, according to the Gospel of John, it says that he didn't believe in.
00:02:46.960 --> 00:02:47.680
The brothers didn't believe in.
00:02:47.919 --> 00:02:48.080
No.
00:02:48.400 --> 00:02:54.080
But he did have a personal appearance from Jesus after the crucifixion and the resurrection.
00:02:54.319 --> 00:02:58.000
And I guess perhaps his belief dates from that time.
00:02:58.159 --> 00:03:01.919
And he became the leader of the church in Jerusalem.
00:03:02.080 --> 00:03:14.400
And although that was a very Jewish-focused church, he also had this wider vision for the Gentiles because he encouraged Paul and Barnabas to go on their missionary journey.
00:03:14.560 --> 00:03:19.120
He there was some anti-Paul feeling at one stage, and he dealt with that.
00:03:19.280 --> 00:03:24.400
So that is who we believe wrote the book, the Brother of Jesus himself.
00:03:24.800 --> 00:03:32.240
And the date, well, again, we don't know for sure, but the indicators are that it was written early.
00:03:32.319 --> 00:03:39.120
It's an early book, because it's quite Jewish, as though the most of the church were still Jewish believers.
00:03:39.520 --> 00:03:44.800
There's not some mention of any Gentile problem or anything like that.
00:03:44.960 --> 00:03:49.840
And they use the word synagoga for church instead of ecclesia.
00:03:50.080 --> 00:03:52.000
So this is the Jewish word.
00:03:52.240 --> 00:03:58.560
So we believe it could be as early as, say, 50 AD, which when you think about it, it's only 20 years maybe after Jesus died.
00:03:58.639 --> 00:04:00.240
It's amazing, amazingly early.
00:04:00.560 --> 00:04:05.680
So James, the earthly brother of Jesus Christ, actually doesn't even say that at the beginning.
00:04:05.759 --> 00:04:08.560
He doesn't say, I'm the earthly brother of Jesus Christ.
00:04:08.719 --> 00:04:11.520
He says a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ.
00:04:11.680 --> 00:04:22.000
Actually, the Greek word I think for is dulos, which means a slave of Jesus Christ, which is, oh, it just shows his modesty and his happiness to be under the leadership of the Lord.
00:04:22.079 --> 00:04:24.399
That's it is very wonderful.
00:04:24.639 --> 00:04:33.199
Also, of course, he led, he was in charge of the Council of Jerusalem in Acts 15, which is one of the key moments for the developing church.
00:04:34.000 --> 00:04:38.800
And so now, Paul, I'm looking at this to the twelve tribes scattered among the nations.
00:04:39.040 --> 00:04:40.800
Twelve tribes, what's all that about?
00:04:41.199 --> 00:04:47.920
Well, it picks up on what you've just been saying about that council of Jerusalem in Acts 15, and he's obviously concerned.
00:04:48.319 --> 00:04:59.279
He knows that there are all these foreigners from all the different nations and they're joining Israel, they're joining this what is becoming a global Israel, this Jesus movement.
00:04:59.759 --> 00:05:09.040
And of course, um, Gentiles always joined previously in the Old Testament, there were laws for doing that, but they had to cease to be Gentiles and become Jews and all that.
00:05:09.600 --> 00:05:20.240
Now, this big issue that he's he's presided over is the way in which all these nations are becoming part of this global Jesus movement, but they're still Gentiles and everything.
00:05:20.480 --> 00:05:35.199
And in a way, he's writing this general letter that's gonna go out to well it it's go in a way, it's to anybody who says, Well, I'm I'm part of this, because the the phrase twelve tribes of Israel, it isn't normally used to describe the people of God.
00:05:35.279 --> 00:05:43.439
The prophets sometimes use it as a way of talking about how the people of God should be, an idealized way vision of how they should be.
00:05:44.160 --> 00:05:52.639
So he's sort of saying this uh the real the reality of Israel, the people of God, as it exists among all the nations.
00:05:53.199 --> 00:06:02.160
And so there'll be Gentile believers who'll read this, these and who are just newly part of this Jesus movement, he'll be saying, I suppose that's me.
00:06:02.399 --> 00:06:04.079
He's saying you're part of this.
00:06:04.160 --> 00:06:07.839
He's kind of welcoming in whatever nation that you're from.
00:06:07.920 --> 00:06:10.000
And you'll think, Oh, yeah, that's me.
00:06:10.079 --> 00:06:11.279
I'm part of that movement.
00:06:11.360 --> 00:06:17.600
It's a way which is carrying forward what happened at the Council of Jerusalem, and it it's all part of that.
00:06:17.680 --> 00:06:22.639
It's a it's a very, it's a very clever way of incorporating the nations in.
00:06:22.959 --> 00:06:23.839
I think that's fascinating.
00:06:23.920 --> 00:06:27.920
I mean, you're from Lancashire, Robbie is originates from Australia.
00:06:28.079 --> 00:06:32.560
I was born in Kenya, now a Londoner, and and yet I'm part of the tribes of Israel.
00:06:32.800 --> 00:06:33.279
Yeah, that's right.
00:06:33.360 --> 00:06:34.319
He's writing to you.
00:06:34.639 --> 00:06:40.560
We're all the children of Abraham through the Lord Jesus, and I think that's probably it is a reassurance.
00:06:40.959 --> 00:06:44.879
Actually, there's several is it reassurance, or what is it, uh uh Robbie?
00:06:44.959 --> 00:06:58.079
When we come to verses two to four about the county pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith, etc., but it leads to these various uh attributes of the Christian life.
00:06:58.319 --> 00:07:10.639
I mean, you come, well, you've most recently you've been in the Sudan, which is one of the most uh hot beds of around the world of difficulty and opposition and uh and endurance.
00:07:10.879 --> 00:07:13.519
Uh how do you what do you make of this passage?
00:07:14.480 --> 00:07:18.959
Yes, when you think of the church in the Sudan, this is almost a picture of the church, isn't it?
00:07:19.120 --> 00:07:23.600
That it is pure joy, that despite the war, the church persevered.
00:07:23.680 --> 00:07:33.680
And when you saw pictures of them during the war, it was with joy they were welcoming somebody who had come and and you would see the processions with the the crosses held aloft and so on.
00:07:33.839 --> 00:07:35.360
It was pure joy.
00:07:35.600 --> 00:07:42.000
But it's also it is a challenge because how can you think of a trial as pure joy?
00:07:42.240 --> 00:07:48.879
Um, it is a test, and there is a reason for it because you know it will develop perseverance.
00:07:49.040 --> 00:07:52.480
But James does challenge you in part of the trial.
00:07:52.560 --> 00:07:54.399
Um, I'm looking at verse five.
00:07:54.480 --> 00:07:56.319
Uh, this is part of it, I think.
00:07:56.480 --> 00:08:00.319
If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God and so on.
00:08:00.399 --> 00:08:02.480
And when he asks, he must believe.
00:08:02.720 --> 00:08:12.879
So we need to pray in the trial and ask for wisdom, wisdom to understand it, wisdom to accept it, wisdom to see that it's part of God's will for us at that particular time.
00:08:13.120 --> 00:08:14.560
And what will that develop?
00:08:14.720 --> 00:08:19.120
Well, it'll develop greater trust and greater perseverance.
00:08:19.360 --> 00:08:22.639
Um, we've got to pray, believing, not doubting.
00:08:22.800 --> 00:08:26.800
So, you know, pray and know that the Lord is hearing in the trial.
00:08:26.959 --> 00:08:30.000
He's not a way, or even though you feel abandoned.
00:08:30.160 --> 00:08:35.840
I mean, in my own experience, there have been times when I've felt completely abandoned.
00:08:36.080 --> 00:08:43.759
I think of um Argentina in the first 24 hours after I arrived, speaking no language practically.
00:08:43.919 --> 00:08:49.759
The only person I knew in South America was killed, was knocked down by a car and killed.
00:08:49.919 --> 00:08:53.440
And I had nobody, I knew nobody, I had no language.
00:08:53.679 --> 00:08:58.000
But the Lord sent his servants to comfort me, to look after me.
00:08:58.159 --> 00:09:02.879
And they were not fellow missionaries, they were local Argentine people.
00:09:03.039 --> 00:09:06.879
And the Lord and his Holy Spirit were so close to me at that time.
00:09:07.120 --> 00:09:09.519
Um, I mustn't ramble on.
00:09:09.600 --> 00:09:21.200
I could think of many times when Jesus became as real as Paul sitting here to me, when I have been abandoned in the swamps of Paraguay by my Indian guide, um, miles ahead.
00:09:21.360 --> 00:09:23.279
And I always thought, Jesus, you're here.
00:09:23.360 --> 00:09:26.159
I could speak to Jesus in English and the horse in English.
00:09:26.240 --> 00:09:28.879
And that was the only time I'd be able to speak English.
00:09:29.120 --> 00:09:35.360
But uh, you know, the Lord was near, he was, and it was it was a trial, it was suffering, I believe.
00:09:35.759 --> 00:09:41.840
But um it did lead to a greater trust, and that trust will lead to to greater maturity, I believe.
00:09:42.799 --> 00:09:47.600
It's it's so helpful because it ties right in with the scripture, really, what you're saying.
00:09:47.840 --> 00:09:53.039
Of course, there are these two reasons, I suppose, that why we face trials and opposition often as well.
00:09:53.200 --> 00:10:08.879
One is that we're on the receiving end of the anger that Christ's mission has generated, but then the other reason is what you're exactly harping on, that the trials will lead to greater strengthening, especially as we, as you say, ask for wisdom as to how to deal with these matters.
00:10:09.120 --> 00:10:13.840
So that when we ask for wisdom, this is chapter one, verses five to twelve, Paul.
00:10:14.320 --> 00:10:19.600
When we ask for wisdom from the Father, verse six says we must believe or not doubt.
00:10:20.000 --> 00:10:23.120
So, what kind of doubt is James talking about?
00:10:23.200 --> 00:10:27.919
I mean, how can we ensure that our faith is strong enough to receive the wisdom that we're asking for?
00:10:28.159 --> 00:10:36.240
Well, that's right, because you might think, oh, I need wisdom in this situation, but I'm actually filled with anxieties and doubts and concerns, so I'm not gonna get answered.
00:10:36.399 --> 00:10:38.159
No, James isn't thinking like that.
00:10:38.399 --> 00:10:44.480
He's going much deeper than the day-to-day feelings of the up and down on the emotional level.
00:10:44.639 --> 00:10:56.240
He's saying, No under all that, are you a person who really just has has entrusted the your have I entrusted my life to the living God through the Lord Jesus Christ?
00:10:57.039 --> 00:11:02.480
If I'm fundamentally someone who's done that and tr and trusted myself, he will hear that.
00:11:02.720 --> 00:11:07.200
He will hear when I pray and call out for help and say, Lord, I I don't know what's happening to me.
00:11:07.360 --> 00:11:08.960
Can you give me wisdom and help?
00:11:09.279 --> 00:11:10.399
He will do that.
00:11:10.879 --> 00:11:19.360
But the person who fundamentally doesn't trust the living God, and they'll sort of say, Oh God, you know, he's like, No, you don't really trust.
00:11:19.600 --> 00:11:22.000
You're doesn't you're coming out of a place of unbelief.
00:11:22.159 --> 00:11:26.000
So he's saying it doesn't matter about the day-to-day feelings.
00:11:26.159 --> 00:11:31.279
It's are you fundamentally a person who's entrusted their life to Lord to the Lord Jesus?
00:11:32.240 --> 00:11:33.440
You're not double-minded.
00:11:33.919 --> 00:11:35.519
Not double-minded, that's it.
00:11:35.840 --> 00:11:36.240
Yeah.
00:11:36.639 --> 00:11:44.240
We have to take that into account, especially when it comes to the matters of possessions, um, position, and riches, poverty.
00:11:44.399 --> 00:11:49.120
I mean, Robbie, you've well, you've lived among some of the poorest people on earth.
00:11:49.360 --> 00:11:59.039
And as I look at chapter 1, verse 9 to 11, we could ruminate for a minute or two as to what James has to say about poverty and wealth in those in those verses.
00:11:59.679 --> 00:12:07.840
Yes, I mean, I think the focus here is because most people in James's church, days of James's church, were poor.
00:12:08.000 --> 00:12:10.000
I think most believers were poor in those days.
00:12:10.080 --> 00:12:13.360
And so he's speaking to them very strongly.
00:12:13.519 --> 00:12:18.000
And it's true in the in the world today that most believers are poor.
00:12:18.159 --> 00:12:20.080
Numerically, most believers are poor.
00:12:20.240 --> 00:12:22.960
So this still speaks very strongly to them.
00:12:23.200 --> 00:12:26.639
And they are told to take pride in their position.
00:12:26.720 --> 00:12:33.679
Now that's a hard thing to do if you are living from day to day when you can't feed your children and so on.
00:12:33.919 --> 00:12:42.399
Um, yeah, it's it is a challenge, it is a kind of trial, and again, it will lead to greater trust in Christ.
00:12:42.559 --> 00:12:48.399
Um, when poverty is there and you don't have the resources, then you have to depend on Jesus.
00:12:48.639 --> 00:13:02.559
I think of the people in the slums of uh Salta, Argentina, that I used to uh worship with every Sunday, and they did not have a few cents to go to the hospital on the bus with their sick child.
00:13:02.720 --> 00:13:08.320
So they would call the believers around them and they would pray for the sick child and the children would be healed.
00:13:08.559 --> 00:13:12.639
And this was because their faith was such they did not have the other resources.
00:13:12.799 --> 00:13:14.240
This was a trial, their poverty.
00:13:14.320 --> 00:13:19.440
They didn't want to be poor, but in that poverty they learned tremendous trust.
00:13:19.600 --> 00:13:32.399
And I mean it's a challenge to the poor, but it's also a challenge to the rich because the riches are so ephemeral, and the rich man is told to take pride in his humble position, which you it's hard to think about that.
00:13:32.720 --> 00:13:36.080
But this is this reminder about treasures in heaven.
00:13:36.240 --> 00:13:38.320
You know, where is your treasure?
00:13:38.480 --> 00:13:42.000
If it's in heaven, then you are very humble in the thought of that.
00:13:42.159 --> 00:13:46.799
So you can take pride in your humble position, even if you're rich.
00:13:46.960 --> 00:13:51.039
Uh, I think it's a challenge to both ends of the spectrum here, the economic spectrum.
00:13:51.200 --> 00:13:52.080
And we are rich.
00:13:52.240 --> 00:13:54.159
I mean, we are rich by in the world's terms.
00:13:54.720 --> 00:13:55.519
One understands that.
00:13:55.679 --> 00:14:05.519
I suppose we do learn here from about the irrelevance of wealth in one sense, as it affects a person, also the transitoriness of wealth, also the danger of wealth.
00:14:05.679 --> 00:14:08.879
It's not evil in itself, but it can get a hold on you.
00:14:09.200 --> 00:14:12.240
Either whether you've got money or not, it can get a hold on you.
00:14:12.480 --> 00:14:17.440
So, Paul, the different reactions we're talking really about trials.
00:14:17.759 --> 00:14:24.960
See, verse 13 onwards, what two different, I think there are two different reactions to trials that James outlines for us here.
00:14:25.360 --> 00:14:39.600
Yeah, well, we've Robbie's made it so powerfully clear how the the person who's uh believing uh in the Lord Jesus will approach should approach trials one way to say, Here are these trials.
00:14:39.759 --> 00:14:50.799
I I I don't necessarily understand them right now, but I'm gonna pray for wisdom and and the Lord will come near and support and and and I'll persevere and and maturity will come.
00:14:50.879 --> 00:14:56.559
And ultimately, even the experience of joy, great joy, and nothing but joy in this situation.
00:14:56.720 --> 00:15:01.360
That's one approach, and that's a fabulous uh road leading that way.
00:15:01.679 --> 00:15:13.679
But James is saying there's another path that people might go down, and that's that one of doubt, of unbelief, of saying, I don't trust the I don't trust the living God, and he's made a mess of things, and I'm in all this mess.
00:15:13.840 --> 00:15:15.279
And then what might they do?
00:15:15.440 --> 00:15:21.120
They may accuse God of tempting them, of causing trouble, then they may turn to their evil desires.
00:15:21.200 --> 00:15:24.159
They'll say, Oh, how am I gonna find any comfort in this situation?
00:15:24.320 --> 00:15:32.639
I tell you what, I'm gonna I'm gonna trust in money, or I'm gonna pursue my own evil desires, or I'm gonna go for status and things like that.
00:15:32.720 --> 00:15:38.960
So then you have evil desires, which leads to sin, and then sin produces death.
00:15:39.200 --> 00:15:44.399
Two roads, one pure leading to pure joy, the other one leading to death and destruction.
00:15:44.559 --> 00:15:45.360
That's the challenge.
00:15:45.440 --> 00:15:46.720
Which one are we gonna go down?
00:15:46.879 --> 00:15:48.799
Hey, what a passage, what a passage, can't it?
00:15:48.960 --> 00:15:49.440
All joy.
00:15:49.600 --> 00:15:51.279
Robbie, give me your Bible for a minute.
00:15:51.519 --> 00:15:52.720
Give me your Bible.
00:15:52.960 --> 00:15:55.120
This is Robbie Langford's Bible.
00:15:55.279 --> 00:15:58.320
She's had this in Afghanistan and in many other places.
00:15:58.480 --> 00:16:04.480
When she was in Afghanistan, her home was raided by the Taliban, looted by the Taliban.
00:16:04.799 --> 00:16:06.799
The only thing they left was the Bible.
00:16:06.879 --> 00:16:12.960
And even that had been stamped, this very Bible had been stamped on, torn in two, with bootmarks all over it.
00:16:13.200 --> 00:16:15.600
Robbie rescued it, pulled it together again.
00:16:15.679 --> 00:16:18.399
She still got it together, but that was all she was left with.
00:16:18.559 --> 00:16:20.639
But that's a wonderful treasure to have been left with.
00:16:20.799 --> 00:16:24.320
Because it symbolizes, of course, our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
00:16:24.559 --> 00:16:28.320
The biggest things of all are with us all the time if we're believers.
00:16:29.039 --> 00:16:30.559
Thank you very much for joining us.
00:16:30.639 --> 00:16:34.799
And before too long, we'll have another in this series of studies on the book of James.
00:16:36.559 --> 00:16:37.600
Thank you very much.
